The presence of an industry will always have an impact on society, both positive and negative impacts. The research aims to determine the impact of the presence of oil palm plantations on the socio-economic conditions of the Balanti Village community. The research uses qualitative research methods with a descriptive approach. The data collection techniques used observation, interviews and documentation. Data were analyzed by means of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The theory used is the theory of social change according to Kingsley Davis (Soekanto, 2015). The research results show that the presence of oil palm plantations in Balanti Village has an impact on the socio-economic impact of the community. The presence of plantations has an impact on increasing income and permanent income. Before the establishment of oil palm plantations, the community's main job was as farmers and since the presence of oil palm plantations, the community has been able to improve their housing, and their level of education has increased. The presence of oil palm plantations does not have much influence on the social life of the community, for example, social interaction and the community culture of mutual cooperation have not disappeared but have changed, especially in terms of time. With so many people working on oil palm plantations, most community meetings are only held in the afternoon. It is hoped that companies will always make a big contribution in supporting the economic progress of village communities and it is hoped that the community will not ignore the habits that exist in the community.

Comparative Study of the Yield and Chemical Profile of Rose Oils and Hydrosols Obtained by Industrial Plantations of Oil-Bearing Roses in Bulgaria

Bulgaria is famous for its oil-bearing rose. R. damascena Mill. and R. alba L. are mainly cultivated in the country, but a recent survey of industrial plantations in 2020 revealed that R. centifolia L. and hybrids of R. damascena Mill. X R. gallica L. are also common in the rose valley. Although their essential oil cannot be compared in quality with the classic, these species are preferred by farmers with high yields of flowers and resistance to diseases and pests. All these roses are also used to produce rose water and extracts. The aim of this investigation was to compare the yield and chromatographic fingerprints of seven rose oils and hydrosols produced in Bulgaria. The quantitative composition of the main components of the oils was compared with the norms of the world standards. Our study showed that the yield of essential oil from these roses was in the range of 0.015–0.048%. The main group in the chemical composition is terpene alcohols, which vary in range: geraniol (15.85–34.02%), citronellol (6.70–28.72%), and nerol (5.80–11.90%) but with a different ratio. Hydrocarbons are represented by saturated aliphatic homologs with an odd number of carbon atoms, the main ones being nonadecane (8.10–22.67%), heneicosane (4.37–10.21%), heptadecane (1.07–2.98%), and triclosan (0.81–5.90%). In contrast, the chemical profile of the hydrosols was performed using phenylethyl alcohol (27.45–69.88%), geraniol (13.72–28.67%), and citronelol+nerol (4.56–17.37%). The results show that the presence of plantations with a genotype different from that of R. damascena implies differences in the quality of rose oils and hydrosols. This determines their properties of use.

Influence of Agricultural Expansion and Human Disturbance on the Encounter Rates of Nocturnal Mammals in Tropical Hill Forests in Bangladesh

Agricultural expansion has had a detrimental effect on tropical forests and the animal communities that depend on them. Agroforestry systems, however, with their more complex tree and plant communities, have been shown to be important habitats for a range of globally threatened species, including nocturnal animals. Here, we present novel data on the encounter rates of seven species of nocturnal mammals in relation to agroforestry systems within four national parks and associated plantations in Bangladesh to examine if encounter rates were influenced by the human population density, presence of plantations, and human access as represented by a Human Influence Index of anthropogenic disturbance. We walked 70.3 km of transects with only semi-natural forest, 26.9 km of transects with semi-natural forest and gardens, and 21.7 km of transects with semi-natural forest and monocultures over 55 nights from 2017–2019. Of the seven species of nocturnal mammals we detected, all were present in Satachari National Park, whereas six occurred in Lawachara National Park, Rajkandi Forest Range, and Rema-Kalenga Wildlife Sanctuary. Within these national parks, three species (Bengal slow loris, large Indian civet, particolored flying squirrel) were more frequently recorded in areas with human disturbance, especially agroforestry plantations. With declining forest cover in Bangladesh, we highlight here the potential of agroforestry systems as emerging important habitats for these species. We encourage long-term studies of these lesser-studied taxa to understand fully the capacity of agroforestry systems in order to support their long-term conservation.

Linear woody landscape elements may help to mitigate leaf surface loss caused by the cereal leaf beetle

ContextWoody semi-natural habitats serve as permanent habitats and hibernation sites for natural enemies and, through spillover processes, they play an important role in the biological control of insect pests. However, this service is also dependent on the amount and configuration of the dominating woody habitat types: linear landscape elements (hedgerows, shelterbelts), and more evenly extended plantations. Relating natural enemy action to the landscape context can help to identify the effect of woody habitats on biological control effectiveness.ObjectivesIn the Central European agricultural landscapes such as in the Hungarian lowlands, where our study took place, woody linear elements are characterised by high, while woody areal elements, mostly plantations, by low biological and structural diversity. In this study, we aimed to determine which composition and configuration of woody linear and areal habitats in the landscape may enhance the effect of natural enemy action on plant damage caused by the cereal leaf beetle (CLB, Oulema melanopus).MethodsHerbivory suppression by natural enemies was assessed from the leaf damage difference between caged and open treatments. These exclusion experiments were carried out in 34 wheat fields on plants with controlled CLB infections. The results were related to landscape structure, quantified by different landscape metrics of both woody linear and areal habitats inside buffers between 150 and 500 m radii, surrounding the wheat fields.ResultsThe exclusion of natural enemies increased the leaf surface loss caused by CLBs in all fields. Shelterbelts and hedgerows in 150–200 m vicinity of the wheat fields had a strong suppressing effect on CLB damage, while the presence of plantations at 250 m and further rather impeded natural enemy action.ConclusionsOur results indicate that shelterbelts and hedgerows may provide a strong spillover of natural enemies, thus contribute to an enhanced biological control of CLBs.

Land Use Change Increases Wildlife Parasite Diversity in Anamalai Hills, Western Ghats, India

Anthropogenic landscape changes such as land use change and habitat fragmentation are known to alter wildlife diversity. Since host and parasite diversities are strongly connected, landscape changes are also likely to change wildlife parasite diversity with implication for wildlife health. However, research linking anthropogenic landscape change and wildlife parasite diversity is limited, especially comparing effects of land use change and habitat fragmentation, which often cooccur but may affect parasite diversity substantially differently. Here, we assessed how anthropogenic land use change (presence of plantation, livestock foraging and human settlement) and habitat fragmentation may change the gastrointestinal parasite diversity of wild mammalian host species (n = 23) in Anamalai hills, India. We found that presence of plantations, and potentially livestock, significantly increased parasite diversity due possibly to spillover of parasites from livestock to wildlife. However, effect of habitat fragmentation on parasite diversity was not significant. Together, our results showed how human activities may increase wildlife parasite diversity within human-dominated landscape and highlighted the complex pattern of parasite diversity distribution as a result of cooccurrence of multiple anthropogenic landscape changes.

The Cities in East Sumatera after the Development of Plantation Industry 1863-1942

The ports in East Sumatra were located on the banks of the riverbefore the presence of plantations.These traditional cities underwent some changes after the presence of plantations, where the cities on the riverbank changed intothe cities in the middle of the plantation. The new cities that emerged after the development of plantations were formed or initiated by the plantation party and the Dutch Colonial government in East Sumatra. The purpose was for the cities to become the administrative center of the plantations and government. Why did the colonial government or plantations build new cities? And howwas the development of the old cities and the new cities?

Through rivers, the crops from upstream were brought to downstream to be traded and exported abroad, especially to Penang. On the other hand, it was also through the river that the goods were imported from downstream to upstream. In other words, with the absence of land transport, the rivers became very dominant. However, after the presence of plantations, the abundant crops required a more efficient and effective transportation, therefore, the development of land transport, for instance railroad and highway, were paramount. The construction of land transportation facilities certainly had an impact on river transportation. The impact was that river transportation was increasingly abandoned because it was ineffective and inefficient. However, there were several rivers that remained became the most important means of transportation.

Activity budget and ranging of a group of Madidi titis (<i>Plecturocebus aureipalatii</i>) in Reserva Ecólogica Taricaya, with preliminary notes on diet composition, habitat usage and additional sightings


 
 
 This study aims to provide the first data on activity budget and ranging of one group of Plecturocebus aureipalatii and give preliminary notes on habitat usage and diet composition. Additionally, censuses were carried out to determine the presence of other groups in the area. The study site was strongly impacted by human actions (i.e. selective logging, small scale agriculture and hunting), it contained secondary, mixed- and less disturbed forest. The study group consisted of three habituated adult animals, living around an eco-tourist lodge. Using the scan-sampling method, the group was investigated over the course of four months to collect data on activity budget, ranging and habitat usage. Diet composition was only investigated for a limited period, using focal animal sampling. The activity budget showed a high percentage of stationary behaviour compared to other species, while the percentage of time spent on feeding/foraging behaviour was lower. This may have been caused by the presence of plantations and therefore easily accessible fruits. Analyses of habitat usage showed a strong preference for secondary forest. Ranging and diet composition did not seem to differ from expectations based on other titi monkey species. A long-term study of more groups is recommended to get a better understanding of this species and its requirements.
 
 

Interprovincial and interannual differences in the causes of land-use fires in Sumatra, Indonesia

Despite the vast destruction caused by recent fires in Sumatra's forested areas, there have been few analyses of their spatial variability and causes. Various combinations of predisposing and land-use factors in space and time may cause fires. For each variable, fire densities were calculated to assess the spatial and temporal association between natural and cultural landscape variables and fire occurrence in four provinces in Sumatra, Indonesia for a non-dry year (1999) and a dry year (1997). This was complemented by a single multivariate logistic regression for the two years over the four provinces with fires as the dependent variable and land use and predisposing factors as independent variables. The provincial analyses showed that fires are determined by multiple, interacting factors and that these factor interactions are not the same in all provinces. In the non-dry year, the factors were only weak determinants of fires and only few determinants were common to all provinces (presence of undisturbed forests, elevation, smallholder area, land allocation to production area). In the dry year, more determinants of fires were found to be common to all provinces (presence of undisturbed forests, elevation, land allocation to production or conversion areas, presence of plantations, distance from roads). This led to the identification of pathways that increased fire probability. The first step was the allocation of land to different land-use types and stakeholders by national policies. If allocated to large-scale landowners, fires were more likely to occur in plantations, especially in the dry year. Logging concessions did not play a major role in increasing the incidence of fire. However the strongest increase in fire probability was outside the areas under use, in undisturbed forests. We conclude that areas not yet used by large-scale landowners were more prone to fire, indicating a serious threat to the remaining forests in this region.

GIS-based support tool system for decision-making regarding local forest protection: illustrations from Orissa, India.

A support tool system comprising risk and priority analyses was illustrated in a geographical information system environment and also tested with data from two forest protection areas for comparison of the system output. The system is recommended as a management monitoring tool for areas where village forest protection at a local level is taking place. The geographical area in the eastern part of India is subject to scarcity of forest resources and is representative in the context of widespread occurrence of local forest protection. Data used were topography, hectares protected, population census, distance to forest and other villages, degree of forest regeneration, presence of plantations, age of protection, surrounding forest resources, and population mix. Methods used were digitizing information for the systems' different layers, analyses of satellite information, field work, gathering of local information, and the application of five risk/priority analyses: erosion, ecological and institutional sustainability, conflict, and degree of dependency. Questions asked were how the different analyses should be interpreted and how the system could be kept updated. The results show that the system needs resource-demanding and field assistance to be kept dynamic. The system is also dependent on the interpretations of the analyses. The limits or levels of assistance for forest management depend on the resources available. The system illustrates how a tool can be utilized for decisions regarding input of resources. It can further be very useful in defining and comparing different areas in order to detect areas in need of assistance and the type of help needed.
