Multifunctional Antimonene-Silver Nanocomposites for Ultra-Multi-Mode and Multi-Analyte Sensing, Parallel and Batch Logic Computing, Long-Text Information Protection.

To simulate life's emergent functions, mining the multiple sensing capabilities of nanosystems, and digitizing networks of transduction signals and molecular interactions, is an ongoing endeavor. Here, multifunctional antimonene-silver nanocomposites (AM-Ag NCs) are synthesized facilely and fused for molecular sensing and digitization applications (including ultra-multi-mode and multi-analyte sensing, parallel and batch logic computing, long-text information protection). By mixing surfactant, AM, Ag+ and Sodium borohydride (NaBH4) at room temperature for 5min, the resulting NCs are comprised of Ag nanoparticles scattered within AM nanosheets and protected by the surfactant. Interestingly, AM-Ag NCs exhibit ultra-multi-mode sensing ability for multiplex metal ions (Hg2+, Fe3+, or Al3+), which significantly improved selectivity (≈2 times) and sensitivity (≈400 times) when analyzing the combined channels. Moreover, multiple sensing capabilities of AM-Ag NCs enable diverse batch and parallel molecular logic computations (including advanced cascaded logic circuits). Ultra-multi-mode selective patterns of AM-Ag NCs to 18 kinds of metal ions can be converted into a series of binary strings by setting the thresholds, and realized high-density, long-text information protection for the first time. This study provides new ideas and paradigms for the preparation and multi-purpose application of 2D nanocomposites, but also offers new directions for the fusion of molecular sensing and informatization.

Preparation of Polyoxymethylene/Exfoliated Molybdenum Disulfide Nanocomposite through Solid-State Shear Milling

In this paper, the solid-state shear milling (S3M) strategy featuring a very strong three-dimensional shear stress field was adopted to prepare the high-performance polyoxymethylene (POM)/molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) functional nanocomposite. The transmission electron microscope and Raman measurement results confirmed that the bulk MoS2 particle was successfully exfoliated into few-layer MoS2 nanoplatelets by the above simple S3M physical method. The polarized optical microscope (PLM) observation indicated the pan-milled nanoscale MoS2 particles presented a better dispersion performance in the POM matrix. The results of the tribological test indicated that the incorporation of MoS2 could substantially improve the wear resistance performance of POM. Moreover, the pan-milled exfoliated MoS2 nanosheets could further substantially decrease the friction coefficient of POM. Scanning electron microscope observations on the worn scar revealed the tribological mechanism of the POM/MoS2 nanocomposite prepared by solid-state shear milling. The tensile test results showed that the pan-milled POM/MoS2 nanocomposite has much higher elongation at break than the conventionally melt-compounded material. The solid-state shear milling strategy shows a promising prospect in the preparation of functional nanocomposite with excellent comprehensive performance at a large scale.

Preparation of novel silica-clay mineral aerogel nanocomposites with outstanding thermal insulation performance

Monolithic silica-based aerogels, produced with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), reinforced with aramid fibers and incorporating aluminosilicates were prepared for the first time. The nanocomposites were obtained by varying the amount and type of aramid fibers and replacing a part of the synthetic Si (up to 35 wt% of Si) of TEOS by natural aluminosilicates, kaolin and palygorskite. The effects of the type and amount of both fiber and mineral in the materials key properties were investigated. Most samples displayed very low volumetric shrinkages during ambient drying (< 5%), high porosity (∼90%), and low bulk densities, down to 120 kg m-3. Composites with both minerals exhibited superinsulating thermal performance, with thermal conductivity reaching values as low as 22 mW m-1 K-1, while also showing excellent thermal stability. The mechanical properties of the designed clay mineral-silica aerogels can be tailored, since the addition of short length fibers (Kevlar pulp) produces stiffer composites, while the longer fibers (Teijinconex) lead to more flexible ones.

Investigation on preparation and tribology of poly ether ether ketone nanocomposite with transition metal doped zirconium dioxide

Composite materials are currently one of the most active study fields in modern technology. Their promising properties make them appropriate for a wide range of industrial applications including aerospace, automotive, construction, sports, bio-medical, and many more. These materials have amazing structural and mechanical features such as high strength-to-weight ratio, resistance to chemicals, fire, corrosion, and wear, as well as being cost-effective to produce. Poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK), a high performance polymeric materials, is increasingly being employed to replace metal elements in car engines and transmissions. Zirconium oxide (ZrO2), often known as zirconia, is a high-tech ceramic substance that is widely employed in the manufacture of various hard ceramics. The various physical and chemical properties of ZrO2 have been properly tailored for a given use by inserting transition metals (dopants) into the ZrO2 crystalline structure. In this work, the nano-composite of PEEK and transition metal doped Zirconium Dioxide is prepared. The composite was subsequently subjected to vital characterizations and tribological testing. The characterization validated the amalgam of modified ZrO2 with PEEK. The investigation has shown that PEEK reinforcement with modified ZrO2 has desired qualities for use in tribological applications

Photocatalytic degradation of biological contaminant (E. coli) in drinking water under direct natural sunlight irradiation using incorporation of green synthesized TiO2, Fe2O3 nanoparticles

AbstractGlobally, there is a severe problem of widespread water contamination. Adsorption and photocatalytic degradation are considered the most suitable methods for removing these water pollutants because of their simplicity, environmental friendliness, and capacity to generate high-quality water. By a completely green route, in this recent study, the fungus Aspergillus tubingensis was able to synthesize TiO2 and Fe2O3 NPs with an average diameter of 28.0 and 65 nm, respectively. The smallest NPs diameters were produced when the precursor salt concentrations were 10−3 M and 10−2 M for TiO2 and Fe2O3, respectively, at pH 3 and an incubation time of 72 h. The biosynthesized NPs were characterized using DLS, TEM, EDX, and VSM. They were then applied in the preparation of titanium-iron nanocomposites with different ratios (1:1, 1:2, and 2:1 (w/w)) and characterized by FTIR and XRD. In this study, Escherichia coli (E. coli) was photo-catalytically inactivated using a TiO2–Fe2O3 nanocomposite as a photocatalyst in the presence of direct sunlight. This material’s photocatalytic performance was evaluated in comparison to that of TiO2 and Fe2O3 NPs. After 60 min of exposure to direct sunlight, the cell death was estimated as 97.97%, 99.32%, 89.06%, 30.96%, and 25.14% in the presence of TF-1, TF-2, TF-3, TiO2, and Fe2O3, respectively. Under direct natural sunlight irradiation for 60 min, TiO2 and Fe2O3 nanoparticles alone have the least impact on E. coli, whereas TF-2 nanocomposite has a higher level of photocatalytic bacterial inactivation competency than TF-1 and TF-3 nanocomposites. No significant toxicity has been observed for TF-2-treated water samples in the toxicity assessment.

α-Fe2O3/TiO2/Ti3C2Tx Nanocomposites for Enhanced Acetone Gas Sensors.

Metal oxide semi-conductors are widely applied in various fields due to their low cost, easy processing, and good compatibility with microelectronic technology. In this study, ternary α-Fe2O3/TiO2/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites were prepared via simple hydrothermal and annealing treatments. The composition, morphology, and crystal structure of the samples were studied using XPS, SEM, EDS, XRD, and multiple other testing methods. The gas-sensing measurement results suggest that the response value (34.66) of the F/M-3 sensor is 3.5 times higher than the pure α-Fe2O3 sensor (9.78) around 100 ppm acetone at 220°C, with a rapid response and recovery time (10/7 s). Furthermore, the sensors have an ultra-low detection limit (0.1 ppm acetone), excellent selectivity, and long-term stability. The improved sensitivity of the composites is mainly attributed to their excellent metal conductivity, the unique two-dimensional layered structure of Ti3C2Tx, and the heterojunction formed between the nanocomposite materials. This research paves a new route for the preparation of MXene derivatives and metal oxide nanocomposites.

Green preparation of versatile silver-based nanocomposites using whole biomass-based Tannin-Furfural as raw materials

Phenolic resin (PR) nanomaterials, which serve as excellent carriers for precious metals, are typically synthesized via the cross-linked reaction of phenol and formaldehyde, and both are toxic. Therefore, replacing them with whole biomass-based materials is an attractive alternative; however, it has proven to be a significant challenge. In this study, we successfully prepared versatile Ag-based resin nanocomposites (referred to as TFR@Ag) by utilizing whole biomass-based tannin and furfural as raw feedstock. The resulting TFR nanospheres exhibited high stability and uniformity, with tunable sizes ranging from 280 to 1430 nm by adjusting the amount of ammonia used in the synthesis process. Importantly, compared to traditional PR nanospheres, the novel and environmentally friendly TFR nanospheres possess abundant phenolic-OH groups that significantly enhance their adsorption, reduction and chelation capacity for Ag+. The highest loading amount of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) achieved was up to 60.3 wt% with a size of only 10.6 nm. The as-obtained TFR@Ag nanocomposites demonstrated excellent catalytic activity in treating typical hazardous dye-containing wastewater. As catalyst, the 0.4 mg TFR@Ag were capable of achieving full reduction of 2 mL 40 mg·mL−1 methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) in just one minute, exhibiting reaction rate constants of 1.71 min−1 and 2.40 min−1, respectively. Moreover, as antibacterial agents, the TFR@Ag nanocomposite effectively inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) with a bacterial inhibition rate close to 100 %. This work presents a new strategy for green synthesis of multi-functional Ag-based nanocomposites that hold great potential in various fields such as catalysis, nanomaterials science and biomedicine.

Effect of thermal mismatch strain on the self-assembly of nanorods in YBCO/NRs nanocomposite films

This study presents a thermoelastic model to investigate the impact of thermal mismatch strain, resulting from distinct thermal expansion coefficients between the film matrix and nanorods, on the self-assembly of nanorods in YBCO/NRs nanocomposite films. An accurate understanding of thermal mismatch strain generated during nanocomposite film preparation is vital for controlling the self-assembly of artificial nanorods in such films. In this model, we calculated the total elastic energy density of the film matrix and nanorods, considering both lattice and thermal mismatch strains, to analyze the effect of thermal strain on the diameter of c-oriented nanorods in YBCO nanocomposite films. The calculated nanorod diameter values match experimentally measured values for BaZrO3 and BaSnO3 nanorods. Furthermore, compared to results that only consider lattice mismatch strain, the proposed model yields closer calculation values to experimental measurements by incorporating the impact of thermal mismatch strain. The thermal mismatch strain also affects the spacing between two adjacent nanorods, having the most profound effect on BSO nanorods compared to BZO and BHO nanorods. These findings contribute to understanding the mechanisms involved in nanorod self-assembly and provide insights to optimize the design of YBCO/NRs nanocomposite films.

A Multichannel Screen-Printed Carbon Electrode Based on Fluorinated Poly(3-octylthiophene-2,5-diyl) and Purified Mesoporous Carbon Black Simultaneously Detects Na+, K+, Ca2+, and NO2.

Preparation of nanocomposites based on fluorinated poly(3-octylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (POTF) and purified mesoporous carbon black (PMCB) as the solid-contact layer of a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) is proposed. POTF is used as a dispersant for PMCB. The obtained nanocomposites possess unique characteristics including high conductivity, capacitance, and stability. The SPCE based on POTF and PMCB is characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and chronopotentiometry, demonstrating simultaneous detection of Na+, K+, Ca2+, and NO2- ions with detection limits of 10-6.5, 10-6.4, 10-6.7, and 10-6.3 M, respectively. Water layer and anti-interference tests revealed that the electrode has high hydrophobicity, and the static contact angle is >140°. The electrode shows excellent selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility, and stability and is not easily affected by light, O2, or CO2.

Optical and UV Shielding Properties of Inorganic Nanoparticles Embedded in Polymethyl Methacrylate Nanocomposite Freestanding Films.

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is an interesting polymer employed in various applications due to its outstanding properties. However, its electrical and mechanical properties can be further improved by incorporating nanoparticles, and in particular, PMMA nanocomposite with nanoparticles provides various multifunctional properties. This work reports PMMA nanocomposite preparation and structural and optical characterizations incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNTs), TiO2 nanoparticles, and carbon quantum dots (CQDs). CNT/PMMA, TiO2/PMMA, and CQD/PMMA nanocomposite freestanding films were prepared using a simple solution method. Various properties of the prepared composite films were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, Fourier transform infrared, and UV-Vis and Raman spectroscopy. Optical parameters and photocatalytic dye degradation for the films are reported, focusing on the properties of the materials. The CNT/PMMA, TiO2/PMMA, and CQD/PMMA films achieved, respectively, good electrical conductivity, photodegradation, and fluorescence compared with other composite films.

Nanocellulose as an Ecofriendly Source in Nanoscience: Synthesis, Characterization, Properties, and Applications—A Review

AbstractNanocellulose is a promising future material which has got attention due to its unique characteristics. Properties which make nanocellulose special are the eco‐friendliness, high strength, stiffness, renewability, abundance, tunable surface characteristics, and low weight. This review addresses major factors like processing of nanocellulose, modification, properties, preparation of nanocomposites from nanocellulose, and their application in different fields. This review facilitates the selection of biomass sources, processing techniques for NC synthesis, application, and challenges. This review also emphasizes on different applications of nanocellulose reinforced polymer composites in different areas such as biomedical, packaging, electronic and environmental remediation, etc. Recent developments in the processing of cellulose nanocomposites using solution casting and other complex methods have been highlighted. As an emerging functional polymeric material, nanocellulose has become a research hotspot. The importance of nanocellulose in future includes the design of nanocellulose as per the specific user requirements, reduction of the production cost, and making customized products using nanocellulose using green processing. Hence this review is intended to provide new insights into the field of eco‐friendly fundamental materials with in‐depth perspectives and current research trends in its future applications.

Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) biosynthesis by Komagataeibacter hansenii RM-03 using agricultural waste as substrates and BNC-silver nanocomposite preparation

Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a remarkable biopolymer synthesised by bacterium, exhibiting exceptional properties. However, conventional Hestrin-Schramm (HS) medium, particularly the carbon source, poses challenges of high costs and low productivity. This study explores BNC biosynthesis on a modified HS medium, employing agricultural wastes (sugarcane molasses, banana peel, and pineapple peel) as carbon sources, and compares the overall yield of BNC produced. Sugarcane molasses proved to be the most effective, yielding the highest BNC concentration (8.19 g/L) after 7 days, followed by pineapple peel (2.16 g/L) and banana peel (2.11 g/L). Extensive research was conducted to enhance properties of BNC by an environmentally friendly approach, incorporating silver nanoparticles (AgNP) utilising Momordica charantia fruit extract, resulting in a BNC-Ag nanocomposite. The synthesis involved mixing 1 mM silver nitrate (AgNO3) with 15 mL of M. charantia fruit extract to reduce Ag ions to AgNP, which was confirmed by UV-vis spectroscopy with an absorbance peak between 400 and 410 nm. Characterisation using FESEM and TEM on the synthesized BNC showed minimal impact on BNC fiber diameter from waste-derived carbon sources. XRD indicated slight variations in crystallinity index, with the highest (85%) in TSM-derived BNC. FTIR analysis revealed similar chemical profiles across all BNC, indicating cellulose formation. The BNC-Ag nanocomposite exhibited potent antibacterial activity against multi-drug resistant strains (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus) through disc diffusion method with inhibition zones up to 16.8 mm. Overall, the findings from this study contribute to the development of environmentally sustainable for the production of functional BNC materials with enhanced properties for diverse applications.

Recent Advances in Nanoclay‐ and Graphene‐Based Thermoplastic Nanocomposites for Packaging Applications

ABSTRACTOver the past few years, thermoplastic nanocomposites reinforced with different types of nanofillers have seen widespread use in the automotive, pharmaceutical, food packaging and electronic sectors. Among the different nanofillers used to fabricate thermoplastic composite–based packaging materials, nanoclay and graphene are very beneficial for producing high‐barrier packaging materials. The high aspect ratio and large surface area of both nanoclay and graphene facilitate uniform filler dispersion and tortuous path in the thermoplastic matrix, which ultimately improves the physico‐mechanical, thermal and barrier to oxygen, water vapour and light as well as antimicrobial properties, which are key requirements for packaging materials. Because graphene nanomaterials are electrically and thermally conductive, these thermoplastic nanocomposites may display excellent electrical‐, thermal‐ and microwave‐shielding capabilities, allowing them to be used in electronic packaging. This review aims to summarize the preparation and characterization of thermoplastic nanocomposites based on different types of nanoclay, graphene and graphene derivatives, as well as their prospective applications in food and electronic packaging. This review paper also discusses the factors that can affect the performance and attributes of these packaging materials, such as processing conditions, types of nanofillers, functionalization or modification of nanofillers for better filler dispersion and so forth. This paper presents a comprehensive and state‐of‐the‐art article on nanoclay‐ and graphene‐loaded thermoplastic nanocomposite–based packaging materials.

Enhanced Performance of Epoxidized Natural Rubber Nanocomposites for Strain Sensor Application

In this study, the major objective was to investigate the mechanical and electrical properties, and strain sensibility of the carbon nanotube (CNT) filled epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) nanocomposite. The second filler, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), at various proportions was incorporated into the CNT-filled ENR nanocomposites. The preparation of ENR nanocomposite was carried out using a latex mixing process. The CNT:CNF hybrid filler was pre-dispersed in deionized water before being added to the ENR latex. The ratios of CNTs to CNFs varied from 1:0 to 1:0.05, 1:0.5, 1:1, 1:1.25, and 1:1.5. Although the presence of CNFs enhanced the stiffness of the substance, its negative effect on the tensile strength was noted. From the evaluated electrical properties, the outcomes demonstrated that the presence of CNFs with suitable proportions can have a positive effect on the performance of the substance when used as a stain-sensitive substance. The electrical conductivity of the hybrid ENR nanocomposite initially increased with the increase of CNF proportion up to 0.5. Beyond this proportion, the conductivity declined gradually. Moreover, the CNT:CNF1:0.5 filled ENR nanocomposite had the highest recoverable piezoresistive property. From this finding, it can be inferred that the CNT:CNF1:0.5 filled ENR nanocomposite is suitable to be used as a strain sensor device.

Cobalt Ferrite Nanorods Synthesized with a Facile "Green" Method in a Magnetic Field.

We report a new facile method for the synthesis of prolate cobalt ferrite nanoparticles without additional stabilizers, which involves a co-precipitation reaction of Fe3+ and Co2+ ions in a static magnetic field. The magnetic field is demonstrated to be a key factor for the 1D growth of cobalt ferrite nanocrystals in the synthesis. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy are applied to characterize the morphology and structure of the obtained nanoparticles. According to TEM, they represent nanorods with a mean length of 25 nm and a diameter of 3.4 nm that have a monocrystalline structure with characteristic plane spacing of 2.9 Å. XRD and Raman spectroscopy confirm the spinel CoFe2O4 structure of the nanorods. After aging, the synthesized nanorods exhibit maximum saturation magnetization and coercivity equal to 30 emu/g and 0.3 kOe, respectively. Thus, the suggested method is a simple and "green" way to prepare CoFe2O4 nanorods with high aspect ratios and pronounced magnetic properties, which are important for various practical applications, including biomedicine, energy storage, and the preparation of anisotropic magnetic nanocomposites.

Structure and optical characterization of chitosan-chitin/Ag nanocomposite thin films

Chitin and its derivatives are common natural polymers that are widely used in various technological fields. In recent years, considerable attention has been paid to the preparation of polymer nanocomposites based on metal nanoparticles (NPs). Chitin/chitosan-based composites due to high antibacterial activity are suitable for application in related food storage, textile industries. This paper presents an effective and simple method of obtaining chitosan-chitin copolymer/Ag nanocomposites with an extremely high content of metal nanoparticles. The structure and morphology of the synthesized nanocomposites were investigated using X-ray diffractometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and their optical properties were studied using UV-VIS spectroscopy as well as spectral ellipsometry. It was ascertained that the resulting nanocomposite films are characterized by a uniform distribution of spherical silver nanoparticles, the sizes of which increase (from 55 up to 143 nm) with increasing the Ag+-ions concentration in the reaction mixtures. The optical absorption spectra of nanocomposites are characterized by the presence of an absorption maximum within the range 458…525 nm, which confirms the formation of Ag NPs. A monotonous increase in the values of the energies of optical transitions was observed in the process of increasing the average size of NPs

Practical method for studying the dispersion behavior of TiC nanoparticles in molten Mg

The dispersion behavior of TiC nanoparticles in molten Mg was investigated by using molecular dynamics simulations based on Li's theoretical model of nanoparticle capture. First, the contact angles between molten Mg and the TiC substrate were calculated over a temperature range of 973–1173 K, and the error was within 10% of the experimental values. The calculated contact angles and Li's theory, confirmed that the dispersion behavior of TiC nanoparticles in molten Mg can be of three types. Subsequently, the effects of the nanoparticle radius and temperature on the dispersion behavior of TiC nanoparticles in molten Mg were studied. The results showed that TiC nanoparticles having a radius of less than 55.8 nm can be uniformly dispersed in molten Mg at 973 K. For TiC nanoparticles having a mean particle radius of 60 nm, the temperature must exceed 1045 K to achieve self-dispersion of the nanoparticles in the Mg melt. This study presents a practical computational technique for the preparation of Mg matrix nanocomposites.

Preparation and investigation of Montmorillonite-K10 Polyaniline nanocomposites for optoelectronic applications

One-dimensional polyaniline (PANI) nanostructures were synthesized in situ in the presence of two-dimensional (2D) Montmorillonite (MMT) clay nanosheets. Strong interactions between the polymer and MMT platelets in the nanocomposites were confirmed through spectroscopic studies. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopic studies revealed the clay's profound effect on the polymer's crystallinity and morphology. The clay nanosheets induced higher crystallinity and well-defined nanorod morphology in the polymer structure. Consequently, the nanocomposite showed an electrical conductivity of 8.72 S/cm, closer to that of the pristine polymer (8.97 S/cm), despite the presence of highly insulting clay material. Surprisingly, a notable decrease in the optical bandgap of the polymer from 3.73 to 2.88 eV of the nanocomposite was also observed. This novel integration of a narrow band gap and high conductivity in PANI/MMT nanocomposites can expand their utility for visible light interactions in areas encompassing photocatalysis, photovoltaics, electro/photochromism, and related technologies.
