The effects of visitor restrictions on inpatients and family visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic: insights from a cross-sectional survey in China.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, hospitals implemented visitor restrictions to curtail the spread of the virus. The study aims to understand the perspectives of hospitalized patients and their family visitors on visitation restrictions and the factors influencing their willingness to adhere to these restrictions. This cross-sectional survey invited 1,200 participants, with 1,032 valid responses received, including 460 hospitalized patients and 572 family visitors. The survey indicated that 88.91% of hospitalized patients and 93.00% of family visitors complied and adhered to the visitor restrictions. The predominant mode of communication was via phone (77.62%), with emotional support (56.40%) recognized as the primary purpose of visitation. Visitor restrictions significantly affected hospitalized patients, with 51.65% reporting feelings of loneliness and 42.44% reporting anxiety. After adjusting for age, gender, and other factors, hospitalized patients' willingness to follow visitation restrictions was linked to their awareness of the restrictions (odds ratio [OR] = 0.20, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.09-0.44) and their desire to protect (OR = 0.32, 95% CI: 0.14-0.76). Family members' willingness to follow the restrictions was related to their awareness of them (OR = 0.34, 95% CI: 0.12-0.95) and how well they communicated (OR = 0.23, 95% CI: 0.09-0.58). Participants generally followed visitation restrictions, but these measures negatively impacted the psychological and social well-being of patients and their families, leading to increased feelings of loneliness and anxiety. Healthcare providers, hospital administrators, and policymakers should acknowledge the complex effects of these restrictions and focus on improving patient experiences in the future.

Research on the Compilation of Multimodal Translation Teaching Materials in the New Media Era

With the advent of the 21st-century digital era, multimodal information dissemination has increasingly become the predominant mode of communication. Multimodal translation plays an increasingly critical role in cross-cultural information transmission. However, the current pedagogical domain in translation primarily focuses on the cultivation of linguistic translation skills, with less attention to the training of students' multimodal translation competencies. To date, there are no teaching materials specifically designed for multimodal translation. In light of the significance of multimodal translation, this paper explores the compilation issues of multimodal translation teaching materials within the context of the new media era, aiming to guide and inspire the development of such resources.

SIGN LANGUAGE DETECTION USING LSTM NEURAL NETWORK

The main aim of the project is to create a user-friendly interface between normal people and deaf and dumb people. Humans communicate with one another using natural language channels such as words and writing, or by body language (gestures) such as hand motions, head gestures, facial expression, lip motion, and so forth. Comprehending sign language is equally as vital as understanding natural language. The predominant mode of communication is sign language among the deaf and the hearing-impaired people all over the world. sign language said to have different gestures where each gesture has specific meaning. Hearing-impaired people use sign language as their primary mode of communication. Without a translation, people with hearing impairments have difficulty speaking with other hearing people. As a result, implementing a system that recognises sign language would have a substantial positive impact on the social lives of deaf people. We propose a modified for continuous sequences of gestures, the LSTM model is used. also known as continuous SLD, that detects a series of related motions in this research. It is based on the division the division of a continuous symbol into sub-units and the modelling of these sub-units using neural networks. As a result, different combinations of sub-units are not necessary to be considered in the course of training. The suggestion is that approach has been put to the test with the help of Indian Sign Language signed sentences (ISL). Different sign terms are used to recognise these sign sentences.

The origin of language and relative roles of voice and gesture in early communication development

Both vocalization and gesture are universal modes of communication and fundamental features of language development. The gestural origins theory proposes that language evolved out of early gestural use. However, evidence reported here suggests vocalization is much more prominent in early human communication than gesture is. To our knowledge no prior research has investigated the rates of emergence of both gesture and vocalization across the first year in human infants. We evaluated the rates of gestures and speech-like vocalizations (protophones) in 10 infants at 4, 7, and 11 months of age using parent-infant laboratory recordings. We found that infant protophones outnumbered gestures substantially at all three ages, ranging from >35 times more protophones than gestures at 3 months, to >2.5 times more protophones than gestures at 11 months. The results suggest vocalization, not gesture, is the predominant mode of communication in human infants in the first year.

Workflow management in radiation oncology: the impact on a high volume department

Objective: Integration of treatment planning and delivery is paramount for efficient functioning of radiotherapy departments. Workflow management software is a tool available for effective resource management in radiotherapy. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of workflow-management on work-efficiency and organisational ergonomics in a high volume department. Methods: Before implementing the workflow management software (Aria v 11.0™), paper documentation was the predominant mode of communication between physicians and physicists in our department. Case records of patients treated with conformal radiation in the two-month period before and after implementation of workflow management were retrospectively evaluated. Proportion of cases for which treatment was started on the day of appointment was taken as a surrogate for work-efficiency. Results: Of the 343 cases analysed, 190 were treated before implementation of workflow-management, while 153 were treated after. Workflow management has improved overall efficiency from 67%–79%. Conclusion: Implementation of workflow management resulted in significant improvement in efficiency and organisational ergonomics.

From uni- to multimodality: towards an integrative view on anuran communication.

Undeniably, acoustic signals are the predominant mode of communication in frogs and toads. Acoustically active species are found throughout the vast diversity of anuran families. However, additional or alternative signal modalities have gained increasing attention. In several anurans, seismic, visual and chemical communications have convergently evolved due to ecological constraints such as noisy environments. The production of a visual cue, like the inevitably moving vocal sac of acoustically advertising males, is emphasized by conspicuously coloured throats. Limb movements accompanied by dynamic displays of bright colours are additional examples of striking visual signals independent of vocalizations. In some multimodal anuran communication systems, the acoustic component acts as an alert signal, which alters the receiver attention to the following visual display. Recent findings of colourful glands on vocal sacs, producing volatile species-specific scent bouquets suggest the possibility of integration of acoustic, visual and chemical cues in species recognition and mate choice. The combination of signal components facilitates a broadened display repertoire in challenging environmental conditions. Thus, the complexity of the communication systems of frogs and toads may have been underestimated.

How Family Members Stay in Touch: A Quantitative Investigation of Core Family Networks

Traditionally, people's closest family members resided locally where face-to-face interaction was the predominant mode of communication. Today, in addition to face-to-face visits, one can use a landline telephone, cellular telephone, or any number of the computer-mediated communications such as e-mail. This article explores the modes of communication people use most with their three closest family members with a particular emphasis on how mode of communication may vary by three factors: (1) family member locality, (2) physical distance of the family member, and (3) frequency of communication. The results from a 2005 random sample mail survey show that e-mail has become an important tool in maintaining core familial social networks, especially when these family members live outside the local area. The impacts of computer-mediated communications on the maintenance of familial networks and resulting social capital are addressed.

Long-term use of cochlear implant systems in paediatric recipients and factors contributing to non-use

The aim of the present paper was to assess children's long-term use of their cochlear implant systems and to explore factors influencing the extent of daily use. The parents of 138 deaf children who had been implanted for seven years completed an annual questionnaire about the extent of their child's use of their implant system. The results revealed that seven years after implantation 115 children (83%) were wearing their implants full-time, 16 (12%) most of the time, three (2%) some of the time and four (3%) were non-users. The children were categorised into those who were full-time users (group F) and those who were not full-time users (group N). The mean age at implantation in group F was 4.4 years with a median of four whereas in group N the mean age at implantation was 5.8 years with a median of 5.5 years. This difference was highly statistically significant. There were no children who were total non-users implanted below the age of five. The predominant mode of communication was oral in group F and signed communication in group N and the difference was also statistically significant. In group F, 90 (78%) were in mainstream education, either mainstream school or a resource base in a mainstream school, whereas the respective percentage in group N was 57 per cent and this difference was statistically significant. Further investigation of those in group N shows a fluctuating pattern of use over the years prior to becoming complete non-users seven years after implantation. The four children who were complete non-users at seven years after implantation were all implanted at five and had other difficulties with all having complex family issues, three having significant other learning difficulties and one experiencing pain on stimulation. None had experienced device failure.In conclusion, this study of 138 children showed very high levels of full-time use seven years after implantation. Factors linked with full-time use seven years after implantation were early implantation, oral mode of communication and mainstream educational placement. Additional difficulties were not significant. Psycho-social issues such as family and educational support appeared to be important in facilitating continued use of the implant system. Non-use may occur after several years of use and in this group non-use followed a fluctuating pattern of use over time. The regular monitoring of device use may enable cochlear implant teams to be alert to potential non-users and to provide appropriate and timely support to the child, family and educational service. HOW LOCALITY, FREQUENCY OF COMMUNICATION AND INTERNET USAGE AFFECT MODES OF COMMUNICATION WITHIN CORE SOCIAL NETWORKS

The number of ways that people communicate with their social networks has changed dramatically in the last 50 years. Traditionally, the local community was the basis for people's social interactions; most of people's closest friends resided locally and face-to-face communication was the predominant mode of communication. Yet, today face-to-face meetings are no longer the primary way to communicate as one can use a landline telephone or any number of the computer mediated communications such as email. This paper explores the modes of communication rural individuals use most often with their three closest friends and how these modes of communication vary by three factors: (1) social tie locality, (2) frequency of communication, and (3) degree of Internet usage. Using a 2005 random sample mail survey of 1,315 residents in an isolated region of the Western United States, the results show that people actively use email to maintain core social networks, particularly when alters live at a distance. However, contradictory to previous research, the results suggest that increases in Internet usage are associated with decreases in other modes of communication, with proficiency of Internet use serving as a mediating factor in this relationship.

Exploring the role of the internet in the ‘movement for alternative globalization’: The case of the Paris 2003 European Social Forum

This paper attempts to explore the role of the internet in the processes of organization and mobilization of the ‘movement for alternative globalization’, which is often characterized as an ‘internet-based movement’. It reports the findings of a survey undertaken in the Paris 2003 European Social Forum (ESF), which asked 257 respondents about the contexts that mobilized them to participate in the ESF (political/voluntary organizations, friends/relatives, workplace/university, news media), as well as the modes and methods of communication that were used in each context. The findings question the claims about the internet-based character of this movement, as face-to-face contact seems to be the predominant mode of communication. The survey also challenges the much discussed potential of the internet to mobilize politically indifferent or marginalized individuals, as a comparison between users and non-users of the internet revealed that users tended to be mobilized for the ESF through political or voluntary organizations.

Using SNAP Dragons to monitor narrative abilities in young deaf children following cochlear implantation

Objective: To assess the narrative abilities of young deaf children before cochlear implantation and 1 and 2 years following implantation, and to explore possible changes in the implanted children's preferred mode of communication in the narrative abilities task. Study Design: Prospective longitudinal study assessing the narrative abilities of young deaf children before and after cochlear implantation. Setting: Pediatric tertiary referral center for cochlear implantation. Patients and methods: The narrative abilities of 35 young profoundly deaf children were assessed before implantation and 1 and 2 years following implantation using the Stories/Narratives Assessment Procedure. Children with age at implantation less than 6 years were included in the study (mean age at implantation was 3.5 years; range 1.4–5.9 years). All children were filled with the Nucleus multichannel cochlear implant system. With respect to their communication modes, they came from a wide range of backgrounds and all children were encouraged to use their preferred mode of communication during the narrative task. Results: The data showed that there was a statistically significant increase in narrative abilities across the three data points ( P<0.001). Before receiving the implant, children were mostly in the pre-structural, receptive stages and could at most label or comment on the pictures (median narrative stage 2). By the 2-year interval, children were mostly using one or two categories or one complete episode with spontaneous retelling (median narrative stage 4). Although children were not pressured to use any particular communication mode, a shift to speech was found following implantation and this was statistically significant ( P<0.001). Conclusion: Young implanted deaf children showed a significant progress in their narrative abilities through time and a significant shift in the predominant mode of communication towards more speech orientated communication modes following cochlear implantation.

The communicative performance of a severely hearing-impaired adolescent

This study describes the communicative performance of a severely hearing-impaired adolescent.The experimenter taught the subject how to play Russian Backgammon. The subject conversed with, and afterwards taught his mother, speech therapist, and a peer how to play the game. Each dyad played the game once. Videotape recordings were made of each dyadic situation. The channels of communication, both verbal and nonverbal, used by each speaker, were determined. A relational communication coding scheme, involving the analysis of requests and subsequent responses, was applied to the data. Results indicate that the hearing-impaired adolescent, though not always able to hold a dominant position in a dyadic situation, was capable of expressing the same types of control as normal adults. Moreover, the types of control expressed varied as a function of each contextual setting. Whenever the subject did hold a dominant position, the combined verbal plus nonverbal channel was his predominant mode of communication. These findings suggest that a sociolinguistic approach provides important information regarding a hearing-impaired adolescent's communicative performance.
