Emotional Distress Caused by the Measures Taken in Assisted Reproductive Treatments during the COVID-19 Confinement in Spain.

Descriptive cross-sectional study conducted between April and May 2020. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory was applied by telephone in a Spanish adapted version. The research also included social, personal, and work aspects which may be involved in the challenging situation. A total of 115 patients participated in the study (73.7%). Women showed a mean in trait anxiety of 17.79 (SD = 8.80) and a mean in state anxiety of 19.95 (SD = 9.08). Neither the type of treatment nor the time of infertility were predictors of trait anxiety or state anxiety. Greater age pressure and more worry were associated to greater trait and state anxiety (p < 0.001). The most common emotional reactions to discontinuation of fertility treatments were sadness and anxiety. Discontinuation of fertility treatments due to confinement restrictions had a negative impact on the mental health of women who were following a process of assisted reproduction treatment, increasing their levels of emotional distress and anxiety.

RESILIENCE AS A PREDICTOR OF TRAIT ANXIETY IN LATE ADOLESCENTS WITH CHILDHOOD TRAUMA

Childhood trauma experiences can produce negative contributions to mental health such as anxiety, which can develop into trait anxiety. The increase in trait anxiety can be reduced by the presence of resilience in a person. This study aims to determine the effect of resilience as a predictor of trait anxiety in late adolescents with childhood trauma. This study involved 158 late adolescents with childhood trauma, consisting of 111 girls and 47 boys with the purposive sampling method. The measuring instrument used in this study is the Indonesian translation of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF) for measuring childhood trauma, The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) for measuring resilience, and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Form Y-2 (STAI Y-2) for measuring trait anxiety. Simple linear regression was used to analyze the data and obtained a significant result (p = 0,001 &lt; 0,05, t = -5,081). The result of the study is resilience can predict the emergence of trait anxiety in late adolescents with childhood trauma, which indicates that the higher the level of resilience in a person, the lower the level of trait anxiety that exists, and vice versa.

Pain, Fatigue, Nausea, and Vomiting as the Predictors of Anxiety in Patients Undergoing Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: A Prospective Cohort Study

The primary outcome was to assess the correlation between anxiety and pain, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting. The secondary outcome was to determine the predictive roles of pain, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting in anxiety among patients undergoing Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT). The present prospective cohort study was conducted on 200 patients treated by HSCT referred to the centers affiliated to Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. The data were collected using Spielberger Anxiety Questionnaire, Numerical Pain Scale, Brief Fatigue Inventory, and Rhodes Nausea and Vomiting Index. The data were analyzed using Spearman’s test and multiple regression analysis. The means of state anxiety, trait anxiety, pain, fatigue, and nausea, vomiting, and retching were 41.67 (SD = 9.71), 43.78 (SD = 9.00), 3.79 (SD = 2.79), 4.23 (SD = 2.48), and 6.31 (SD = 7.53), respectively. The results showed that the participants with higher pain and fatigue scores had higher anxiety levels. Those with more nausea and vomiting had higher anxiety levels, as well. This indicated that fatigue, pain, severity and frequency of nausea, and type of HSCT were the predictors of trait anxiety. The results also showed the predictor role of pain, fatigue, and type of HSCT in state anxiety. The findings revealed a correlation between anxiety and pain, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting among the HSCT patients. The results also showed fatigue and pain as the predictors of anxiety among these patients. Yet, future studies are recommended to determine the other factors contributing to anxiety amongst HSCT patients.

Anxiety and facial self-contacts: possible impact on COVID-19 transmission in dental practice

BackgroundThe purpose was to analyse the associations between dental and trait anxiety, fear of COVID-19 and the duration and frequency of spontaneous hand-to-face contact (self-contact).MethodsA cross-sectional design was carried out with 128 adult patients from four dental clinics in Madrid, during the confinement, from March 15 to May 15. The patients’ movements in the waiting room were monitored with Microsoft Kinect Software, also completed the Trait anxiety subscale of the STAI, the COVID-19 Fear and the S-DAI questionnaire.ResultsAssociations were observed between the duration and frequency of facial, mask and eye contact with trait anxiety and dental fear was determined only by the frequency of this self-contact. Trait anxiety is associated with dental anxiety and with fear of COVID-19. Although facial self-contact is higher in women, it also rises in men as dental fear increases. Moreover, dental anxiety is a good predictor of trait anxiety and the incidence of facial self-contact.ConclusionsUnderstanding the possible associations between biopsychosocial factors, such as trait anxiety, dental anxiety and self-contact is important. It may help to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the population as well as enabling the formulation of effective interventions to improve oral health care through the implementation of dental care programmes.

Dealing with Anxiety: Relationships among Interpersonal Attachment Style, Psychological Wellbeing and Trait Anxiety

Anxiety is a major contributor to poor quality mental health for many people in our community, and is a leading cause of presentations at medical and health clinics. Patterns of trait anxiety, or dysfunctional responding, have become ingrained in individuals’ approaches to problems they face. Research has shown that psychological wellbeing and interpersonal attachment style are both predictors of trait anxiety. However, the relationships among these variables have not been clarified. The current study sought to determine whether psychological wellbeing mediates the relationship between interpersonal attachment style and trait anxiety, and which of the six psychological wellbeing subscales would contribute most to any mediation effects. A convenience sample of 149 adult participants from South East Queensland, Australia completed a series of online questionnaires including a demographic questionnaire, the Trait Anxiety subscale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-Form Y2), the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA), Ryff’s Psychological Wellbeing Scale (PWB), and a Social Desirability Scale (SDS-17). Psychological Wellbeing was found to partially mediate the relationship between interpersonal attachment style and trait anxiety. The Positive Relations with Others subscale of the PWB was the only significant sub-scale of the PWB that significantly predicted trait anxiety. Overcoming anxiety appears to be most related in our sample to those who deal better with interpersonal relations. Targeting this aspect in treatment approaches appears most likely to lead to improved outcomes for clients.

A Study on Anxiety based on symptoms of ADHD, Creativity and Nicotine Consumption in Smokers

This research aims at studying the predictive power of symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Creativity and Nicotine Consumption in relation to Trait anxiety in individuals who have been smoking for twelve months or more with an increase in the number of cigarettes over time. The State and Trait Anxiety (STAS) scale was used for the same. Symptoms of ADHD were measured by the Adults ADHD Self Report Scale. Divergent Thinking Test was used to measure Creativity of the individuals. Data was collected using the method of convenience sampling via the internet. The study comprised of eighty three participants ranging from nineteen to thirty five years of age. The results were analysed using a Multiple Linear Regression model after checking for the linearity of the variables using a Matrix Scatter Plot. Pearson’s correlation was computed to determine the relationship between the variables. A positive and significant relationship was found between trait Anxiety and ADHD. A Linear Regression Model applied to study the variance between the two variables indicated that 13.9% of the variance in trait Anxiety can be explained by the presence of symptoms of ADHD. Results indicated that ADHD is a significant predictor of Trait Anxiety. The study provides future implication to therapists working with clients with ADHD and Anxiety.

Anxiety Sensitivity as a Predictor of Anxiety and Pain Related to Third Molar Removal

Anxiety sensitivity (AS) refers to the fear of anxiety-related symptoms resulting from beliefs that such sensations have negative somatic, social, or psychological consequences. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether AS can predict both anticipated and experienced pain and state and trait anxiety related to third molar removal. Data were collected from 160 patients who had completed measures of anxiety sensitivity, including the Anxiety Sensitivity Index, the short form of the Fear of Dental Pain questionnaire, the short form of the Dental Anxiety Inventory, and numeric rating scales to assess the anticipated anxiety and pain. Postoperatively, patients were asked to rate their experienced anxiety and pain during treatment, first immediately after surgery and again after 2 days and after 1 week. AS was significantly associated with the severity of dental trait anxiety. However, multiple stepwise regression analysis revealed that AS did not significantly predict anticipated and experienced anxiety and pain beyond that of state anxiety and fear of dental pain. State anxiety was the single best predictor of trait anxiety and pain, followed by the fear of dental pain. In the present study, AS did not predict anxiety and pain related to third molar removal. One possible explanation is that most measures were taken postoperatively, a period in which anticipatory anxiety is irrelevant.

The relationship between parenting factors and trait anxiety: Mediating role of cognitive errors and metacognition

Research examining parenting factors in the development of anxiety has focused largely on the concepts of parental warmth and overcontrolling or intrusive parenting, This study investigated the relationship between these factors, and also parental discipline style and anxiety using self-report methodology with a sample of 16–18 year olds. In order to try to explain the relationship between parenting and anxiety, measures of cognition were also included. A multiple regression was conducted including all parenting factors as predictors of trait anxiety. The regression was a modest fit ( R 2 = 22%) and the model was significant ( F(4, 141) = 9.90, p < 0.0001). Only the effect of Over-reactivity was significant, ( t = 3.72, p < 0.0001). Furthermore, Over-reactive discipline was significantly associated with increased cognitive distortions ( r = 0.361 p < 0.0001) and metacognition ( r = 0.396 p < 0.0001). Both cognitive distortions and metacognition were found to partially mediate the relationship between discipline style and trait anxiety. The implications of these findings and areas for future research are discussed.

Predicting young athletes' motivational indices as a function of their perceptions of the coach- and peer-created climate

The purpose of this study was to examine the additive and interactive influence of perceptions of the coach- and peer-created motivational climates (MC) on affective (physical self-worth, enjoyment, trait anxiety) and behavioral (exerted effort as rated by the coach) responses of young athletes. Age and gender differences in athletes' views regarding these psychological environments were also examined. Cross-sectional; participants responded to a number of questionnaires assessing peer and coach motivational climate, and affective and behavioral responses in youth sport. Participants were 493 young athletes, age 12–17 years (M age=14.08; SD=1.29), from various individual and team sports. Hierarchical regression analyses, controlling for age and gender, showed that a perceived task-involving peer MC was the only predictor of physical self-worth. A perceived ego-involving coach climate emerged as the only predictor of trait anxiety. Enjoyment was predicted positively by both coach and peer task-involving MCs, whereas reported effort was predicted only by the coach task-involving MC. A 2-way MANOVA revealed that perceptions of ego-involving coach and peer MCs were higher among males, whereas females reported higher perceptions of task-involving coach and peer MCs, whereas no age differences were identified. A significant age–gender interaction effect on the peer ego-involving MC emerged. The findings provide evidence for the importance of peer-created MC in youth sport and suggest that both coach and peer influence should be considered in future research on young athletes' self perceptions and motivation-related responses in sport.

Trait-anxiety differences among medical students.

This study investigated the degree to which age, year of study, sex, and marital status predict trait anxiety, as measured by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, among 131 medical students in four classes of a six-year medical school. Univariate analysis showed men had lower trait-anxiety scores than women, and married students had lower scores than single students. Trait-anxiety declined with age and year of study. Multivariate analysis showed that sex was the best predictor of trait-anxiety among these students and that age was a significant predictor even when year of study was held constant. It is suggested that trait-anxiety declines with age among young adults as they successfully cope with the developmental challenges, including professional socialization, of this stage of life.
