Business Education and Entrepreneurial Competence Drivers of Entrepreneurial Intention in University Students

Through business creation, technological progress, and innovation led by entrepreneurs, the country's wealth production and the well-being of citizens can be improved. The study analyzes business education and entrepreneurial competence as predictors of entrepreneurial intention in university students. This research is framed from a quantitative, causal correlational methodological perspective through a structural equation model, the sample of which is comprised of 377 university students. The results show that the model's fit was adequate, with a Chi-square value of 1149.09, 521 degrees of freedom (p=0.000<0.001), and a Chi-square/df ratio of 2.21. The goodness-of-fit indicators, incremental fit, and parsimony measures obtained values within the acceptable range. In conclusion, there is a significant influence (?=0.77) between business education and entrepreneurial competence (p=0.000<0.001) and between entrepreneurial competence and the intention to start a business (? = 0.87). However, the influence (p=0.135<0.05) between business education and entrepreneurial intention was insignificant. The university curriculum must have practical entrepreneurship courses with experienced teachers to transfer entrepreneurship knowledge and incubators, allowing students to inspire and strengthen their entrepreneurship abilities. Predicting entrepreneurial intention in Colombian academics: a machine learning approach

Purpose This study aims to analyze the entrepreneurial intention (EI) of Colombian researchers using machine learning (ML) techniques, considering their academic activity, contexts and social norms (SN). Design/methodology/approach Unsupervised classification techniques were applied, including principal component analysis, hierarchical clustering with the Ward method and a logistic model to evaluate the classification. This was done to group researchers according to their characteristics and EI. Findings The methodology used allowed the identification of three groups of academics with distinct characteristics, of which two showed a high presence of EI. The results indicate that EI is influenced by the connection with the private sector (consulting, intellectual property and applied research) and by the lack of institutional support from universities. Regarding SN, only the preference for entrepreneurial activity over being an employee and the social appreciation of entrepreneurial dedication were identified as predictors of EI. Originality/value The use of ML techniques to study the EI of researchers is uncommon. This study highlights the ability of the methodology used to identify differences between two groups of academics with similar characteristics but different levels of EI. One group was identified that, despite rejecting values associated with entrepreneurs, has a high predisposition to develop a career as an entrepreneur. This provides valuable information for designing policies that promote EI among Colombian researchers.

Entrepreneurial intentions among university students: the role of mentoring, self-efficacy and motivation

PurposeThis research examines whether mentoring is a predictor of entrepreneurial intentions. It also explores how intent translates into action through implementation intentions. The study tests if the mentoring-intentions association is mediated by self-efficacy. The potential moderating effect of achievement motivation on the relationship was also investigated.Design/methodology/approachPLS-SEM was used to test the hypotheses of the 242 valid responses collected from final-year students from Libyan public universities.FindingsResults show that self-efficacy partially mediated the mentoring-intentions association, while motivation negatively moderated the relationship. Entrepreneurial intentions had a significantly strong effect on implementation intentions.Research limitations/implicationsThe results verify mentoring as a practical socializing instructional approach. Therefore, universities should implement structured mentoring programs, offering emotional guidance, counsel and networking opportunities. Also, mentors should undergo training, and progress tracking is essential for improvement.Originality/valueExamining entrepreneurial self-efficacy as a mediator and achievement motivation as a moderator in the mentoring-intentions association is unprecedented. The findings narrow the search for antecedents to entrepreneurial intentions and pinpoint intervention points.

Entrepreneurship education and personality traits as predictors of entrepreneurial intention: A qualitative approach

Purpose: The study explored entrepreneurship education and personality traits as predictors of entrepreneurial intention among final-year undergraduate students of a private institution in Ghana. Research methodology: A qualitative research approach was used in a case study design for this research. A purposive sampling technique was used to collect data from final-year students pursuing an undergraduate program in Information Technology from a private tertiary institution in Ghana. Observation and focus group discussions were used to collect data over a period of ten weeks. Results: Results indicated that though all students were exposed to the same tuition, course content and assessments; the level of entrepreneurial intention varied. Some groups of students wanted to pursue entrepreneurial ventures immediately after school; others wanted to start a business venture while they were still in school pursuing their first degree. Another set preferred to work as employees for a few years before pursuing entrepreneurship. The final group preferred to be employed throughout their working life with the aim of rising through the ranks as employees; with all the various groups showing a variety of personality traits. Limitations: The study was limited to final-year undergraduate students of a private institution in Ghana. Contribution: Educators, who specialize in training students in entrepreneurship need to focus more on orienting students to effectively manage their individual personality traits in ways that will ensure successful entrepreneurship careers. Novelty: This study qualitatively shows the varied levels at which entrepreneurship education affects students’ entrepreneurial intentions based on their personality traits.

Entrepreneurial intention: The role of the perceived benefits of digital technology

Background: Existing research recognises that entrepreneurship orientation (EO) is essential for success. However, the mediating role of EO in driving entrepreneurial intention (EI) amongst young adults, especially in the context of the digital revolution, remains largely underexplored.Aim: Accordingly, this study aimed to investigate the mediated effect of risk taking, innovativeness, and proactiveness on EI in an emerging economy.Setting: The sample for this study was drawn from the young adult population in South Africa who understands the concept of entrepreneurship.Method: In the study, a quantitative method to collect the data is used, while structural equation modelling is used to test the extended theory of planned behaviour (TPB).Results: Findings indicate that risk taking mediates the effects of attitude, entrepreneurial capability, and the perceived benefits of digital technology on EI. The results did not support the mediating function of proactiveness and innovativeness. In fact, this result challenges the TPB’s simplistic structure and reveals the prominent role of risk taking in determining TPB predictors.Conclusion: Given the significance of risk taking, governments and entrepreneurship centres are urged to promote risk taking in all their entrepreneurship development programmes.Contribution: Considering the significance of the global digital transformation, this study extends the TPB by incorporating the perceived benefits of digital technology among the predictors of entrepreneurial intent. It also emphasises the role of risk taking in mediating the effects of these predictors on the entrepreneurial intention of young adults in South Africa.

Career Decisions and Opportunity Recognition as The Predictors of Entrepreneurial Intention

The process of entrepreneurship has a significant reputation for the career-related choice gained by innovation and risk-taking. The present study proposes to investigate the career decisions, opportunity recognition (ORN) and entrepreneurial intention (EIN) levels among university students studying sports sciences in Pakistan. The present study explores the EIN of young adults greatly associated to their career decisions and recognizes opportunism. The study employed cross-sectional data collected throughout Pakistan using a survey questionnaire. In total, 282 valid samples are utilized for concluding the investigation. By applying the path analysis through AMOS, the findings suggest a positive and significant effect of career decisions [(conscious career decisions (CCD) and blind career decisions BCD] on EIN among sports science students. Irrespective of this, environmental factors (ENFs) have an insignificant impact on EIN. The outcomes of a research study may provide guidelines for policymakers and universities’ authorities to accomplish and support the career development of students and accomplish the potential career catastrophes relating to the significant facts of unemployment issues and unemployed young adults. Moreover, the study would also assist the students in recognizing their career opportunities to tackle the unemployment trends. Further, the effect of ORN on EIN is also found to be positive and significant.

The Role of Demographic Factors and Prior Entrepreneurial Exposure in Shaping the Entrepreneurial Intentions of Young Adults: The Case of Croatia

This research was designed in order to investigate the role of important individual and situational factors in shaping entrepreneurial intentions of young adults in the Republic of Croatia. For that purpose, a survey was conducted on the sample of 257 young adults using a questionnaire. In order to test the proposed hypotheses stating that there are statistically significant differences in young adults’ entrepreneurial intentions regarding demographic factors (gender, age, and level of education), prior entrepreneurial exposure, and the perception of prior entrepreneurial exposure, a statistical analysis was performed using the Mann–Whitney and Kruskal–Wallis tests. Overall, the results give partial support for the hypothesis regarding demographic factors and prior entrepreneurial exposure and full support for the hypothesis regarding the perception of prior entrepreneurial exposure. Additionally, CHAID method classification was applied in order to fully grasp the relationship between entrepreneurial intentions and the analyzed factors, and the results clearly indicate that the perception of prior entrepreneurial exposure can be seen as a single best predictor of entrepreneurial intentions.

Personality traits, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and entrepreneurial intention among vocational students

<span lang="EN-US">Entrepreneurship in technical and vocational education is a current and relevant topic. While the role of entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) and personality traits as determinants of entrepreneurial intention (EI) has been extensively studied, the role of ESE and personality traits as determinants of vocational students’ EI is still poorly understood. Thus, this study employed ESE and big five personality traits to explore the determinants of EI among vocational college students. This study’s survey had a sample size of 162 technical vocational education and training (TVET) college students, enrolled in technology in automotive, technology in welding, and technology in refrigeration and air conditioning programs. Data were analyzed using Pearson Correlation and Multiple Linear Regression. The results indicate that apart from neuroticism, openness to experience, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and extraversion were positively associated with EI. The results also confirm that ESE is a predictor of EI. Going forward, the article intends to contribute to a better understanding of ESE and personality traits that influence vocational students’ EI, as well as provide some important insights into the unique aspects of TVETs that empower youth to actively participate in micro-entrepreneurial initiatives. This study encourages academics and policymakers to reconsider the approach used in entrepreneurship education in the vocational setup.</span>

Key Determinants of Women’s Entrepreneurial Intention and Behavior: The Role of Business Opportunity Recognition and Need for Achievement

The focus of this study is to investigate the major factors influencing entrepreneurial intent and behavior, by addressing the role of entrepreneurial education, business opportunity recognition, and the need for achievement. The research data were collected online using a self-administered questionnaire among 148 Moroccan women having completed an entrepreneurship training program. The data analysis using a PLS-SEM provided evidence of the positive impact of entrepreneurial education on entrepreneurial self-efficacy and PBC. Likewise, the findings supported the direct impact of subjective norms and entrepreneurial self-efficacy on entrepreneurial attitude. Furthermore, entrepreneurial attitude, business opportunity recognition, and the need for achievement were identified as predictors of entrepreneurial intent, leading to enhanced entrepreneurial behavior. These results highlight a number of useful practical recommendations for public policy-makers on how to stimulate and encourage entrepreneurship initiatives among women.

ABSTRACT This research aimed to verify the effects of entrepreneurial passion, education, and creativity on entrepreneurial intention (EI). The study used PLS-SEM to analyze data collected via questionnaires from university students in the Brazilian city of Fortaleza. The results showed that entrepreneurial education directly affects EI, whereas the hypothesis that entrepreneurial creativity is a predictor of EI was not supported unless it was mediated by self-efficacy. Finally, the results showed that entrepreneurial passion influences EI directly and when mediated by self-efficacy.

Predictors of entrepreneurial intentions: The role of prior business experience, opportunity recognition, and entrepreneurial education.

Entrepreneurship and its influence on the development of the economy are significant in competitive global advancement. Entrepreneurs need entrepreneurial intentions to improve the commercial environment of the country. Therefore, studying entrepreneurial intentions' influencing predictors is vital for business development. We collected data from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) employees of the developing country and used partial least square structured equation modeling to analyze the proposed relationships. The results assist the literature extension and practically contribute to developing entrepreneurs' intentions through education and opportunity recognition. The findings aid the institutions in improving course planning and establishing practical business setups. This study facilitates the government's ideas of commencing entrepreneurial businesses through proper resource provisions for the entrepreneurs.

Predictors of Entrepreneurial Intention among High School Students in South Korea

According to the theory of planned behavior, the goal of this research is to evaluate the connections between perceived entrepreneurial capacity, perceived social norm, attitude toward entrepreneurship, and entrepreneurial intention. It also examines the mediating effect of the educational environment on these connections. Based on the conceptual structure of the theory, this research study was organized to explore how the conception of the theory works in the case of Korean students and to further assess the role of the educational environment in the course of its operation. At Mirae High School of Science and Technology, eighty-nine respondents were used for the statistical analysis. One model was chosen to explore this research concept, namely, variance-based structural equation modeling (VB-SEM). All of the direct hypotheses are supported except the indirect hypothesis. The perceived entrepreneurial capacity positively influences entrepreneurial intention. The perceived social norm positively influences entrepreneurial intention. Additionally, a positive attitude toward entrepreneurship influences the intention to engage in it. The indirect effect is not in line with the expected hypothesis. The research’s findings contribute to the literature review by adding another empirical confirmation (educational environment’s role) from South Korean students’ viewpoint. It offers useful information and provides students with entrepreneurial skills. This research also contributes to the advancement of knowledge in relation to the predictors of entrepreneurship in students, and it could help governments to make decisions on entrepreneurship. Moreover, it highlights the direction in which a government or policymaker can take to pursue entrepreneurship and its education.

Social support and risk-taking propensity as predictors of entrepreneurial intention among undergraduates in Nigeria

Purpose This paper aims to examine the determinants of entrepreneurial intention among students of a university in Nigeria, with particular emphasis on their risk-taking propensity, social support and demographic variables. Design/methodology/approach Data for the study were collected from 350 undergraduates across seven faculties in Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, through a self-reported questionnaire. Descriptive and regression statistical analysis were used to estimate and test the relationship among entrepreneurial intention and social support, risk-taking propensity and demographic variables. Findings The results showed high entrepreneurial intention among the students. The push factors, such as perceived social support from families, risk-taking propensity and previous engagement in business, are key determinants of entrepreneurship intention among the students. The age and father’s occupation also showed a significant relationship with the level of entrepreneurial intention. Practical implications This result suggests that strengthening social support for entrepreneurship among students could enhance their desire to own a business during and after graduation. Improving entrepreneurship ecosystems in the university could further motivate those already practicing entrepreneurship while also stimulating intentions among others. For instance, provision of entrepreneurship infrastructure and incentives such as business incubators, innovation hubs, science parks and competitive business grants could enhance the risk-taking propensity among students and motivate them for venture creation. Originality/value Understanding the influence of social support and risk-taking propensity on entrepreneurial intention among undergraduates is important for policy and practice. The result further reinforces the need to promote entrepreneurship education to create a critical mass of potential entrepreneurs in the university.

Entrepreneurial intention and university: A necessary relationship in regions with high level of unemployment

Purpose: Although university entrepreneurship education as a predictor of entrepreneurial intention (EI) has been verified in the academic literature, few studies have analysed its influence in regions with low entrepreneurial activity. This research provides a new point of view by contrasting students' perceptions with what entrepreneurs consider most relevant. We propose an integrative and multi-perspective framework based on expectancy theory and the theory of planned behaviour, which includes the moderating effect of gender and family imprinting. Design/methodology/approach: A valid sample of 108 business students from the University of Huelva (Spain) served as the basis of the study, whose data were analysed using consistent partial least squares (PLSc) to validate the scales and subsequently test the hypotheses. In addition, 54 valid questionnaires from local entrepreneurs were used for the comparative analysis between entrepreneurs and students. Findings: Our findings showed that the elements associated with university support have a significant, albeit negative, impact on students' intentions to become entrepreneurs. In terms of moderating variables, no significant differences were found by gender, but significant differences were found in the group with entrepreneurial parents. In relation to the determinants of entrepreneurial success, it was found that the students' conceptions of entrepreneurship were closer to those of the entrepreneurs in Huelva than to those of the successful entrepreneurs. Originality/value: This paper contributes to the academic debate on whether universities in general, and business schools in particular, should promote entrepreneurship as the core of education. We believe that these results, despite the specific and limited scope of the study, may be of great interest for university staff in regions with high levels of structural unemployment and low rates of total early-stage entrepreneurial activity (TEA) to incorporate into their academic programmes.

EL EFECTO DEL APOYO UNIVERSITARIO PERCIBIDO, LA AUTOEFICACIA EMPRESARIAL Y LA PERSONALIDAD PROACTIVA, EN LA PROMOCIÓN DE LA INTENCIÓN EMPRENDEDORA DE LOS ESTUDIANTES EN INDONESIA

Entrepreneurship plays a pivotal role in economic growth for Indonesia. Unfortunately, the number of entrepreneurs in Indonesia is still lagging behind other ASEAN countries. The emergence of knowledge-based entrepreneurship makes universities become one of the vital supply sources for creating entrepreneurs. Even though it has institutional support from the Indonesian government, entrepreneurship is still not considered a promising alternative career choice. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the effect of university institutional support (perceived educational support, concept development support, and concept development support) and personal traits variables (self-efficacy and proactive personality) on Indonesian students' entrepreneurial intention. This study was conducted using a judgmental sampling technique on 302 active university students in Indonesia who have received entrepreneurship education. Data analysis in this study was carried out using the PLS-SEM. The findings of this study indicate that perceived educational support directly affects entrepreneurial intention. While, perceived concept development support and perceived business development support positively shape self-efficacy, leading to entrepreneurial intention. This study also confirms self-efficacy and proactive personality as predictors of entrepreneurial intention. Furthermore, the study also shows that self-efficacy mediates the relationship between proactive personality and Indonesian students' intentions to be entrepreneurs.

THE INFLUENCE OF PERSONALITY ON ENTREPRENEURIAL INTENTIONS

The role of higher education is vital in giving birth to new entrepreneurs in Indonesia. The emergence of many new entrepreneurs has an impact on the development of the country's economy. These impacts include creating jobs and increasing regional and state income. This article provides a discussion of self-personality as a predictor of entrepreneurial intention with self-efficacy as mediation. A personality is a form of character and trait, which can shape behavior. The personality dimensions used in this study are conscientiousness and openness to new experiences. This study used a sample of 210 students from several universities in the city of Surakarta, Indonesia. Data collection techniques, using a purposive sampling method. Data analysis, using path analysis with the help of Structural Equation Model (SEM). This study's findings indicate that self-efficacy mediates the effect of openness to new experiences on entrepreneurial intention. However, conscientiousness has not been shown to affect interest in entrepreneurship.

DETERMINANTS OF YOUTHS’ INTENTION IN AGRIBUSINESS USING THEORY OF PLANNED BEHAVIOR

The study examined youths’ intention in agribusiness using theory of planned behavior. A multi-stage sampling procedure was employed for data collection. However, only 250 questionnaires were properly filled and usable. The objectives were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. The results showed that majority (71.2%) of the respondents were male while 28.8% were female. It also showed that majority (64.8%) of the respondent were between the ages of 23-27 with a mean of the distribution of 24.40. The findings also revealed that 46% of the respondents’ parents were civil servants, businessmen (20%), farmers (18.4%) and other occupations (15.6%). The result of the multiple regression analysis showed that attitude towards behavior (0.550) and subjective norms (0.107) were positive and significant at P≤0.01 and P≤0.05 level of significance, respectively, as predictors of entrepreneurial intention. It was concluded that the students had intention to engage in agribusiness but do not have the capability to get through with it. The students had a positive attitude towards engaging in agribusiness. It was therefore, recommended that seminars, workshops and classes should be held to encourage students to go into agricultural activities; government should also consider giving out incentives, loans, and subsidies to encourage young farmers.

Conflict handling styles as predictors of entrepreneurial intentions

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the relationship between conflict handling styles (CHS) of business managers in their entrepreneurial intentions (EI). The business manager’s propensity to become entrepreneurs is a relatively unexplored area of research. The relationship between conflict handling style and entrepreneurial intention is under-researched, particularly in a developing country like Kosovo.Design/methodology/approachA self-report questionnaire containing measures of conflict handing style, entrepreneurial intention and demographics was delivered to business managers in Kosovo.FindingsForcing style has a positive and statistically significant relationship with entrepreneurial intention. Yielding, compromising, problem solving and avoiding have weak and insignificant effects on EI.Research limitations/implicationsThe relationship between conflict handling styles of managers and their entrepreneurial intention is investigated. No situational, organizational or environmental factor was considered influencing this relationship.Practical implicationsConflict management is important in predicting the entrepreneurial intention of managers. Organizations should design human resource interventions aimed at effective team composition and employee retention to ensure performance.Originality/valueThis is the first study to investigate the relationship between conflict handling style and entrepreneurial intention using a manager sample. Furthermore, it is the first study of conflict handling styles and entrepreneurial intention of managers in Kosovo.

Top Athletes’ Psychological Characteristics and Their Potential for Entrepreneurship

The role of personality traits as predictors of entrepreneurial intention and success has been widely researched. This article investigates the personality traits of top athletes practising low-risk and high-risk sports and, based on the person–job fit theory, compares them to the personality traits commonly associated with entrepreneurship. To achieve this aim, the big five personality traits and risk propensity of 43 non-athletes, 36 top athletes practising a low-risk sport, and 31 top athletes practising a high-risk sport are measured and analysed with an analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc tests. Furthermore, an explanatory approach is used to explain the similarities between the athletes’ and the entrepreneurs’ careers. The results show top athletes’ personality traits match the detected directions for entrepreneurial intention and success, and the discussion examines whether entrepreneurship might be an appropriate second career choice for athletes. This study is based on data gathered from high-level competition athletes and thus makes it possible to draw inferences on the eligibility of athletes to become entrepreneurs based on their personality traits. The findings also signal the need for focused entrepreneurship education as well as an awareness among potential investors and future employers who could facilitate professional athletes becoming entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs.

Exploring the relevance of Igbo Traditional Business School in the development of entrepreneurial potential and intention in Nigeria

ABSTRACT This study extends the literature on the relevance of the Igbo Traditional Business School (ITBS) in building entrepreneurial potential and intention in an emerging African economy – Nigeria. Two key questions motivated the study: does the ITBS influence entrepreneurial potential and intention, and does entrepreneurial potential influence intention? Data were gathered from a purposive sample of 122 actual micro-entrepreneurs (welders) who passed through the ITBS. The results, based on Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA) in SPSS 23.0, suggest that the ITBS positively and significantly influences entrepreneurial potential and intention, and that perceived desirability, perceived feasibility and propensity to act are significant predictors of entrepreneurial intention. We recommend the formulation of policies to regulate and support the operations of ITBS and, that mentors under the ITBS should aim at inculcating skills that drive desirability, feasibility, propensity to act and entrepreneurial intention in the mentees, with emphasis on the advantages of owning an enterprise.
