Opportunistic predatory feeding behaviour of Munida intermedia A. Milne-Edwards & Bouvier, 1899 targeting juveniles of Lepidopus caudatus (Euphrasen, 1788) in the north-western Mediterranean Sea

The genus Munida, inhabits various marine habitats and exhibits versatile feeding behaviour. This study explored the behavioural patterns of Munida intermedia, shedding light on its opportunistic behaviour and competitive interactions within its ecological niche. In 2018, during an investigation using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), carried out on the Méjean shoal (north-western Mediterranean Sea), at 397 m depth, specimens were observed engaging in opportunistic predatory feeding, targeting juveniles of the bathypelagic silver scabbardfish Lepidopus caudatus. Our findings underscore the dynamic nature of M. intermedia feeding habits and the significant role of competitive interactions within its habitat, highlighting the role of video technology in capturing real-time information.

Predation efficacy of Chrysoperla carnea on two economically important stink bugs

Larvae of the green lacewing Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) are generalist predators feeding on a range of pests in agroecosystems. Little is known about the suitability of stink bugs as prey for lacewing larvae. In the present laboratory study, the predatory efficacy of C. carnea on two economically important stink bugs, Halyomorpha halys (Stål) and Nezara viridula (L.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), was evaluated at three constant temperatures (16, 21, and 26 °C) in different arenas (10-cm diameter dishes with bean pod slices or caged small bean plants). We found that second and third instars of C. carnea readily prey on the first instars of both stink bug species. However, only third instars of C. carnea could successfully kill and feed on second instars of either pentatomid. The complexity of the arena, as well as the life stage of the prey and predator influenced the predation efficacy of C. carnea on stink bug nymphs, whereas temperature did not. The observed predation rates on the early instars of both stink bugs suggest that augmentative releases of C. carnea larvae may have some potential in greenhouse crops, particularly against N. viridula infestations, whereas in open field crops their natural populations may also contribute to pest suppression within the broader predator guild.

A method to estimate prey densityfrom single-camera images: A case study with chinstrap penguins and Antarctic krill.

Estimating the densities of marine prey observed in animal-borne video loggers when encountered by foraging predators represents an important challenge for understanding predator-prey interactions in the marine environment. We used video images collected during the foraging trip of one chinstrap penguin (Pygoscelis antarcticus) from Cape Shirreff, Livingston Island, Antarctica to develop a novel approach for estimating the density of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) encountered during foraging activities. Using the open-source Video and Image Analytics for a Marine Environment (VIAME), we trained a neural network model to identify video frames containing krill. Our image classifier has an overall accuracy of 73%, with a positive predictive value of 83% for prediction of frames containing krill. We then developed a method to estimate the volume of water imaged, thus the density (N·m-3) of krill, in the 2-dimensional images. The method is based on the maximum range from the camera where krill remain visibly resolvable and assumes that mean krill length is known, and that the distribution of orientation angles of krill is uniform. From 1,932 images identified as containing krill, we manually identified a subset of 124 images from across the video record that contained resolvable and unresolvable krill necessary to estimate the resolvable range and imaged volume for the video sensor. Krill swarm density encountered by the penguins ranged from 2 to 307 krill·m-3 and mean density of krill was 48 krill·m-3 (sd = 61 krill·m-3). Mean krill biomass density was 25 g·m-3. Our frame-level image classifier model and krill density estimation method provide a new approach to efficiently process video-logger data and estimate krill density from 2D imagery, providing key information on prey aggregations that may affect predator foraging performance. The approach should be directly applicable to other marine predators feeding on aggregations of prey.

Grazing impact of the calanoid copepods Acartia spp. on the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax in the western coastal waters of Korea.

Marine dinoflagellate species in the genus Alexandrium are well known to produce paralytic shellfish poison as well as common coastal species with cosmopolitan distribution. However, few studies on the feeding of copepods on Alexandrium species have been conducted. The toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax contains goniodomin A and causes red tides in many countries. To investigate the relationship between the toxic dinoflagellate A. pseudogonyaulax and the calanoid copepods Acartia spp., we quantified the ingestion rates of Acartia spp. feeding on A. pseudogonyaulax as a function of prey concentration. Additionally, we estimated grazing coefficients by integrating data from field observations of Acartia spp. and coexisting A. pseudogonyaulax with laboratory measurements of ingestion rates obtained during this investigation. Furthermore, we compared the ingestion rates of Acartia spp. and other predators feeding on Alexandrium species as previously reported. The ingestion rates of Acartia spp. on A. pseudogonyaulax increased continuously with increasing mean prey concentration. The highest values among the ingestion rate of Acartia spp. feeding on A. pseudogonyaulax was 3,407 cells predator-1 d-1 (4,872 ng C predator-1 d-1) at the given prey concentration. The calculated grazing coefficients for Acartia spp. on A. pseudogonyaulax in Shiwha Bay, Korea, were up to 0.073 d-1. The results of this study suggest that A. pseudogonyaulax may decrease or maintain the population of Acartia spp. in marine food webs.

Feeding and Biotic Potential of Coccinellid Predators on Coriander Aphid

The work on feeding and biotic potential of coccinellid predators on coriander aphid was studied under ambient laboratory condition at the Department of Entomology, SKN College of Agriculture (SKNAU), Jobner and observed that the first, second, third and fourth instar grubs of Coccinella septempunctata were consume 33.60, 55.22, 129.11 and 193.88 aphids during their respective stages. A grub of C. septempunctata consumed 411.13±10.82 aphids during its total life span. The adult male and female beetles consumed 1425.50±231.82 and 1983.25±177.92 aphids during their adult longevity with daily aphid consumption ability of 54.35±2.95 and 64.14±3.90 aphids per day, respectively.

Diversified cropping strengthens herbivore regulation by providing seasonal resource continuity to predators

Abstract Agricultural practices shape arthropod communities in arable fields, consequently influencing their interactions and the resulting ecosystem services, in particular pest regulation. Predatory arthropods play a pivotal role by preying on herbivores, soil fauna, and on other predators. However, the intricate mechanisms through which agricultural practices shape the dietary preferences of predators, and regulate herbivore populations remain complex and inadequately understood. We assessed how fertilisation with organic fertiliser and extending crop rotations with perennial ley affected predation pressure across prey taxa. We mapped predator and prey trophic linkages with molecular analysis of carabid predator gut contents, and measured densities and taxonomic richness of predators, herbivores, and soil fauna in 19 cereal fields during three samplings across the growing season. We derived two food web structure metrics: prey vulnerability that is the average number of predators feeding on a selected prey, and predator trophic redundancy, that is dietary overlap. Prey vulnerability was compared among soil fauna, herbivores, and other predator species (that is interspecific intraguild predation) over the growing season, and across treatments. The mechanistic underpinnings of observed shifts in vulnerability of herbivorous prey at different crop stages were identified using information criteria to select among candidate variables related to the richness, density and interaction structure of the different guilds during both the current, and the previous crop stages. Agricultural diversification via organic fertilisation combined with perennial ley in the crop rotation decreased the vulnerability of both intraguild prey and soil fauna prey, and stabilised herbivore vulnerability. Mechanistically, the vulnerability of herbivorous prey at crop ripening emerges from the combination of predator richness and trophic redundancy during this sampling round, rather than from carryover effects from previous crop stages. Synthesis and applications: Our results suggest that locally provided resource continuity through diversified cropping practices bolster biological pest regulation, thus underline the importance of lesser disturbance in arable ecosystems for the provision of ecosystem services. Enhanced predator species richness together with availability of alternative prey through the season underpins this enhanced pest regulation.

Microplastic in an apex predator: evidence from Barn owl (Tyto alba) pellets in two sites with different levels of anthropization.

Plastic pollution in terrestrial and freshwater environments and its accumulation along food chains has been poorly studied in birds. The Barn owl (Tyto alba) is an opportunistic and nocturnal apex predator feeding mostly on small mammals. In this note, we reported evidence of microplastics (MPs) contamination in Barn owl pellets collected, for the first time, in two sites with different levels of anthropization (low: natural landscape mosaic vs. high extensive croplands). The following polymers have been recorded: polyvinylchloride (PVC), polyethylene (PE), expanded polyester (EPS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polyester (PL), viscose, and starch-based biopolymer. We found significant higher MPs frequency in the most anthropized site. Our results suggest that pellet' analysis may represent a cost-effective method for monitoring MP contamination along food chains in terrestrial ecosystems.

First evaluation of microplastics in juveniles of the invasive blue crab Callinectes sapidus from a Mediterranean coastal lagoon

Microplastic pollution has affected every region of the marine environment and every level of the food chain. The potential health risks associated with the consumption of seafood products affect the worldwide seafood industry. Crustaceans are the fastest-growing fisheries industry. However, due to their predatory feeding behavior and benthic habitats, crabs are at higher risk of consuming MPs than other marine organisms. This is especially true for blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) who spent most of their lives in coastal environments (such as lagoons and estuaries), which are among the most burdened environments by microplastic pollution. This study evaluated the occurrence of MPs within juvenile blue crabs from Antinioti lagoon, Greece. The findings showed an average abundance of 0.28 MPs/Ind with MPs being identified as nylon and polyethylene (PE), by Raman microscopy. Hence, blue crabs are affected by microplastic pollution from the early stages of their lives.

The red listed eagle owl (Bubo bubo) population in Norway is exposed to POP levels exceeding threshold values for adverse health effects

The eagle owl (Bubo bubo) population in Norway is today classified as critically endangered on the red list of endangered species. Because previous studies have detected high concentrations of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in birds of prey, concerns have been raised whether POPs exposure are a significant factor to the substantial decline of the eagle owl population.The aims of this study were to measure the levels of POPs in eagle owls and to assess whether POPs may represent a potential health risk. POPs were analysed in liver samples from 100 eagle owls collected between 1994 and 2014.The concentrations of POPs were generally very high and individual birds had levels among the highest measured worldwide. The contaminant groups analysed were highly correlated (p < 0.0001). The concentrations of sum of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (∑PCB) exceeded the threshold value from moderate to severe health risk in 90% of the birds. The birds with cachectic or lean body condition had significantly higher levels of contaminants than those with higher body condition scores. No significant temporal or spatial trends were noted.The lack of temporal trends, suggest that the downward trend of POPs, appear to be levelling off. The lack of differences between inland and coastal regions suggest that the risk of exposure may be comparable between predatory birds feeding in marine or terrestrial food webs. The significantly higher POPs levels detected in individuals with poor body condition may be due to reduced fat stores and thereby higher concentration in the remaining fat and/or the weight loss could be induced by toxic effects. The high proportion of birds exceeding the threshold values for severe and high risk of adverse effects, suggest that the high contamination load may reduce the eagle owl’s fitness and survival and, thus, contribute to decline of the eagle owl population.

Effects of Various Nectar and Pollen Plants on the Survival, Reproduction, and Predation of Neoseiulus bicaudus.

Neoseiulus bicaudus is a predatory mite species that could potentially be used for the biological control of spider mites and thrips. Floral resources can provide excellent habitats and abundant nutrients for natural enemies. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of eight floral resources on the longevity, fecundity, and predation ability of N. bicaudus. Among the considered plants, Cnidium monnieri led to the highest longevity (24 days) and fecundity (13.8 eggs) of N. bicaudus, while Tagetes erecta resulted in the lowest longevity (7 days) and fecundity (0.1 eggs) observed in the predatory mites. By comparing the effects of three nectar and pollen plants on the predation of predatory mites, it was observed that N. bicaudus still exhibited a type II functional response to Tetranychus turkestani. In the presence of pollen, the predation efficacy (a/Th) of N. bicaudus exhibited a lower value, compared to that in the absence of pollen (Control: a/Th = 24.00). When pollen was supplied, the maximum consumption (1/Th) of predatory mites was higher than in its absence (Control: 1/Th = 9.90 d-1), with the highest value obtained in the presence of B. officinalis pollen (B. officinalis: 1/Th = 17.86 d-1). The influence coefficient of predation of N. bicaudus on T. turkestani in the presence of pollen was compared in the presence of three nectar and pollen plants: Cnidium monnieri, Centaurea cyanus, and Borago officinalis. At low prey densities, the influence coefficient of C. cyanus exceeded that of B. officinalis, and the overall influence coefficient values were negative (i.e., the presence of pollen reduced predatory mite feeding on T. turkestani). They exhibited similar values at high prey densities, and all of the influence coefficient values were close to 0 (i.e., the presence of pollen had no effect on predatory mite feeding on T. turkestani). The findings revealed that diverse plant species exert differential impacts on N. bicaudus, with some influencing its lifespan and others affecting its reproductive capabilities. Furthermore, the presence of nectar and pollen plants had a significant impact on predatory mite feeding on T. turkestani at low prey densities; however, this effect diminished as the prey density increased. Therefore, we recommend planting C. monnieri, C. cyanus, and B. officinalis in the field to ensure an ample population of predatory mites. The obtained results hold significant implications for the utilization of nectar and pollen plants in eco-friendly pest management strategies within agricultural contexts.

Shark and odontocete depredation on the catch of the tuna longline fishery in New Caledonia (South Pacific Ocean)

Abstract Large marine predators feeding on fish caught on fishing gear, referred to as ‘depredation’, occur in a wide range of fisheries worldwide. Depredation can result in negative ecological and socio-economic impacts, leading to conflict between fishers and depredating species. However, depredation remains understudied in many fisheries, and this hampers the development of effective mitigation solutions. In this study, 21 years of fishing data (2002–2022) were used to assess shark and odontocete depredation in the pelagic tuna longline fishery of New Caledonia. Using generalized linear models, the year, season, effort, soaking time, and vessel were identified as variables significantly influencing the probability of depredation to occur. Results showed that while shark depredation occurred more frequently than odontocete depredation (58.5% vs. 9.2% of the longline sets), they damaged a lower proportion of fish (3.9% vs. 12.3%) over the study period. Unlike sharks, odontocetes selectively depredate tuna, with their highest occurrence during periods of high tuna catch rates, suggesting a co-occurrence with fishing activities. Together, these results indicate that depredation in the New Caledonian fishery is high compared to other regions and provide essential information on the dynamics and impacts of the issue as a basis for considering management and mitigation options.

Functional response of larval and adult Coccinella septempunctata to eggs and larvae of Plutella xylostella on canola

AbstractUnderstanding of functional responses (i.e., changes in predator feeding rates with prey density) of key predators to different crop pest stages is critical to strengthening biological control, particularly in view of climate change and temperature variation. We investigated prey preferences of Coccinella septempunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinelidae) to egg and larval stages of a key brassicaceous pest of canola (Brassica napus L., Brassicaceae), the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). First, laboratory choice and no‐choice bioassays tested the hypotheses that C. septempunctata accepts and differentially prefers two prey developmental stages (eggs and larvae). Then, C. septempunctata larvae and adults were exposed to six densities of P. xylostella eggs over 24 h in functional response bioassays that determined the number of eggs consumed. Finally, the functional response bioassays were repeated with larval prey and extended with three temperature regimes: 10, 22 and 32 °C. In both choice and no‐choice assays, C. septempunctata adults and larvae consumed more P. xylostella larvae than eggs. The functional response of C. septempunctata depended on predator developmental stage and temperature, with reduced handling time and increased attack rates and consumption under warmer conditions. At 10 and 22 °C, the functional responses of both C. septempunctata larvae and adults were of Type II, i.e., rates of prey consumption increase at decelerating rates and then plateau with increasing prey density. Our study demonstrates that both larvae and adults of C. septempunctata can consume high numbers of eggs and early instar P. xylostella larvae; these responses are temperature‐dependent with increased consumption rates at higher temperatures. This may lead to improvements in management of P. xylostella in canola.

Retinal ganglion cell topography and spatial resolving power in the pajama cardinalfish Sphaeramia nematoptera (Bleeker, 1856).

We studied the topography of retinal ganglion cells (GCs) and estimated spatial resolving power (SRP) in the pajama cardinalfish Sphaeramia nematoptera (Bleeker, 1856), a relatively small brightly colored fish inhabiting coral reefs and lagoons in the Western Pacific. S. nematoptera is an active night predator feeding on near-bottom animal plankton and benthos. DAPI staining was used to label nuclei of GCs and non-GCs in the inner plexiform and ganglion cell layers. Non-GCs were distinguished from GCs in Nissl-stained retinal wholemounts based on cell size, shape, and staining intensity. The proportion of displaced amacrine cells (DACs) varied from 15.46 ± 1.12 (visual streak [VS]) to 17.99 ± 1.06% (dorsal periphery) (mean ± S.E.M., N = 5); the respective proportions of glial cells were 6.61 ± 0.84 and 5.89 ± 0.76%. Thus, 76%-78% of cells in the ganglion cell layer and inner plexiform layer were GCs. The minimum spatial coverage of GCs (3600-4600 cells/mm2) was detected in the dorsal and ventral periphery. It gradually increased toward the central retina to form a moderate VS. The maximum GC density (11,400-12,400 cells/mm2) was registered in the central portion of the VS. No pronounced concentric retinal specializations were found. The total number of GCs ranged within 595.2-635.9 × 103. The anatomical spatial resolving power was minimum in the ventral periphery (4.91-5.53 cpd) and maximum in the central portion of the VS (8.47-9.07 cpd). The respective minimum separable angles were 0.18-0.20° and 0.11-0.12°. The relatively high spatial resolving power and presence of the VS in the pajama cardinalfish are in line with its highly visual behavior.

Spies of the deep: An animal-borne active sonar and bioluminescence tag to characterise mesopelagic prey size and behaviour in distinct oceanographic domains

Mesopelagic fishes, a central component of marine trophic networks, play a fundamental role in marine ecosystems. However, as they live in highly inaccessible environments, little information is currently available on their distribution and abundance. The emergence of biologging technologies has made it possible to use deep-diving predators as bio-samplers of their environment in under-sampled regions. In this work, we deployed an innovative miniaturised sonar tag that combines active acoustics with high-resolution GPS, pressure, movement and light sensors on Southern elephant seals, a deep-diving predator feeding on mesopelagic prey. Seals were also equipped with Conductivity-Temperature-Depth tags. Salinity and temperature depth profiles were used to define oceanographic domains, allowing us to explore distribution and ecology of mesopelagic prey targeted by seals and the seals’ foraging behaviour. We highlighted strong vertical differences in prey characteristics and behaviour, with larger, more evasive and less bioluminescent prey in deeper waters. Moreover, prey encountered in warmer waters were found deeper, were more evasive and displayed a more marked diel vertical migration behaviour compared to prey encountered in colder waters, suggesting that prey accessibility and characteristics differ according to oceanographic domains. This study highlights the usefulness of the sonar-bioluminescence tag to infer mesopelagic prey distribution and habitat when deployed on deep-diving predators such as elephant seals.

Co-option of an Astacin Metalloprotease Is Associated with an Evolutionarily Novel Feeding Morphology in a Predatory Nematode.

Animals consume a wide variety of food sources to adapt to different environments. However, the genetic mechanisms underlying the acquisition of evolutionarily novel feeding morphology remain largely unknown. While the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans feeds on bacteria, the satellite species Pristionchus pacificus exhibits predatory feeding behavior toward other nematodes, which is an evolutionarily novel feeding habit. Here, we found that the astacin metalloprotease Ppa-NAS-6 is required for the predatory killing by P. pacificus. Ppa-nas-6 mutants were defective in predation-associated characteristics, specifically the tooth morphogenesis and tooth movement during predation. Comparison of expression patterns and rescue experiments of nas-6 in P. pacificus and C. elegans suggested that alteration of the spatial expression patterns of NAS-6 may be vital for acquiring predation-related traits. Reporter analysis of the Ppa-nas-6 promoter in C. elegans revealed that the alteration in expression patterns was caused by evolutionary changes in cis- and trans-regulatory elements. This study suggests that the co-option of a metalloprotease is involved in an evolutionarily novel feeding morphology.

Nematofauna of the Natural Park “Devil’s Town”

“Devil’s Town” is a natural park dominated by broadleaf deciduous trees, and made up of two rare natural phenomena in the world: earthen statues, as specific forms of relief, and two springs of highly acidic water with high mineralization. Devil’s Town is a “biodiversity star” with a unique ambient, flora, fauna, and microbiome. The research aimed to: investigate the concentration of chemical parameters in the soil of the natural park, identify nematodes that can survive in extreme conditions, explore feeding habits of nematodes, and infer phylogenetic relationships of nematodes based on 28S rRNA sequences. Soil samples were collected from two sites, designated Soil under vegetation and Saxon mine soil, from which nematodes were discovered. Phylogenetic analyses were performed with 28S rRNA gene primers, using Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference. The presence of minerals and heavy metals, combined with high acidity created extreme environmental conditions in which specific nematode species can survive. These circumstances favored fast-moving species with teeth and spears, such as mononchids and dorylaimids, enabling them to adopt predatory feeding behavior. In contrast, Acrobeloides, Prismatolaimus, Rhabditis spp. etc., are saprobionts adapted to specific chemical pollutants, and they tolerate high levels of Pb, Zn, Fe, Cu, Cd and As.

Dynamics of Zooplankton Consumption by the Three-speed Stickleleback &lt;i&gt;Gasterosteus aculeatus&lt;/i&gt; (Linnaeus, 1758) at Different Densities of the Predator

An experiment was set up to estimate the rate of zooplankton consumption by the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus (Linnaeus, 1758) at different predator densities. A differential equation describes the dynamics of zooplankton abundance depending on duration of predator feeding. The derived function accurately characterizes the rate of zooplankton consumption by stickleback in the experiment, demonstrating a good agreement between the theoretical prerequisites and the experimental results. The relationship between changing a number of prey during predation, its mortality and consumption rate was revealed. The hypothesis of consumption rate proportional to the number of predators was tested. A comparative analysis of ingestion rate as a function of time and a function of prey density was performed.

Bioinspired flatfish detection using electrical impedance measurements

Bottom trawling for flatfish by means of tickler chains has a high ecological impact due to the continuous seabed disturbance, low selectivity and high fuel costs. This issue could be significantly mitigated by using localized startle stimuli, triggered by a detection system that selectively targets flatfishes of landable size. Flatfish, however, constitute a significant challenge for remote detection, due to their low optical and acoustical signatures. Some species of predatory fish feeding on flatfish overcome this issue by using electroreception to localize they prey, even if it is buried in bottom sediments. We take this phenomenon as an inspiration in an attempt to develop a biomimetic remote fish detection technique based on electrical impedance measurements. We constructed a detection system including a set of electrodes and a low-cost analog front-end. The electrodes were mounted on a dedicated frame and dragged above a layer of sand inside a tank with sea water and several common sole (Solea solea). An underwater camera was used to acquire video recordings synchronized with impedance data for reference. We demonstrate that fish presence below the electrodes manifests itself by changes in the measured resistance and reactance values. This phenomenon occurs even if the fish is covered with a layer of sand. The results demonstrate the potential of bioinspired remote flatfish detection, which could be highly useful for monitoring or targeted stimulation.

Effects of stream drying, season, and distance to refuge on macroinvertebrate community structure in an arid intermittent stream basin

AbstractIntermittent streams are globally ubiquitous and represent a large percentage of stream networks. As climate change in many arid regions increases the frequency and intensity of drying disturbances, it is important to understand how aquatic biota will respond to such disturbances and how it would impact aquatic biodiversity. To address these topics, we sampled 10 stream reaches in the Sycamore Creek basin, an arid‐land stream in central Arizona (USA), with reach‐scale flow regimes ranging from perennial to highly intermittent. We sampled aquatic macroinvertebrates during 4 seasons to explore seasonal variability in community structure through flowing and drying phases. We also collected continuous flow data with remote data loggers to explore the impacts of intermittency and distance to perennial refuges on species richness, taxonomic composition and trait composition. Overall, richness was lower at intermittent reaches than perennial reaches, and richness values increased linearly as flow duration increased. We found no relationship between richness and distance to the nearest perennial refuge. Community assemblages differed significantly by season but were not distinct between perennial and intermittent reaches. Trait composition was also distinct between seasons and flow regimes, with traits such as a lack of diapause, longer life span and predatory feeding behaviours being indicators for perennial reaches. As climate change alters natural flow regimes, understanding the responses of macroinvertebrate community structure to drying disturbances in arid‐land streams can provide insight on aquatic community responses to climate change at larger scales.

The First Record of &lt;i&gt;Acanthocyclops trajani&lt;/i&gt; (Copepoda, Cyclopidae) in the Vistula Lagoon of the Baltic Sea

In 2021 Acanthocyclops trajani Mirabdullayev et Defaye, 2002, was first record in the Vistula Lagoon of the Baltic Sea. This species quickly spread throughout the water area of the Lagoon. In summer, A. trajani reached its maximum development (up to 92 thousand ind./m3, 2.4 g/m3), was a dominant and forming a particularly high proportion of zooplankton in the most polluted, desalinated and eutrophicated eastern part of the Vistula Lagoon. As a result of predatory feeding, A. trajani exerted significant pressure on the planktonic communities of the Lagoon; its diet in August exceeded the production of non-predatory zooplankton. The pressure on zooplankton increased even more due to the mass development of Cercopagis pengoi (Ostroumov, 1891), with which the new species entered into competitive relationships. The main reasons for the successful naturalization of A. trajani in the Vistula Lagoon, apparently, include some features of its biology, the structure of the plankton community with the presence of unoccupied trophic niches, the continued eutrophication this waterbody, decreasing the pressure of the invasive mollusk Rangia cuneata (G.B. Sowerby, 1831), as well as local climate warming, noted in recent decades.
