Radiometric Calibration of the Near-Infrared Bands of GF-5-02/DPC for Water Vapor Retrieval

The GaoFen (GF)-5-02 satellite is one of the new generations of hyperspectral observation satellites launched by China in 2021. The directional polarimetric camera (DPC) is an optical sensor onboard the GF-5-02 satellite. The precipitable water vapor (PWV) is a key detection parameter of DPC. However, the existing PWV data developed using DPC data have significant errors due to the lack of the timely calibration of the two bands (865, 910 nm) of DPC used for PWV retrieval. In order to acquire DPC PWV data with smaller errors, a calibration method is developed for these two bands. The method consists of two parts: (1) calibrate the 865 nm band of the DPC using the cross-calibration method, (2) calibrate the 910 nm band of the DPC according to the calibrated 865 nm band of the DPC. This method effectively addresses the issue of the absence of a calibration method for the water vapor absorption band (910 nm) of the DPC. Regardless of whether AERONET PWV data or SuomiNET PWV data are used as the reference data, the accuracy of the DPC PWV data developed using calibrated DPC data is significantly superior to that of the DPC PWV data retrieved using data before recalibration. This means that the calibration method for the NIR bands of the DPC can effectively enhance the quality of DPC PWV data.

High-resolution reconstruction and correction of FY-4A precipitable water vapor in China using back propagation neural network

Precipitable water vapor (PWV) with high spatial and temporal resolution is essential for a deeper understanding of the study area's hydrological cycle and climate change. This study uses the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis 5 (ERA5) PWV as auxiliary verification data and proposes a reconstruction method based on back propagation neural network (BPNN) downscaling. Combining with high temporal resolution meteorological elements, digital elevation model (DEM), location, and time, reconstructed the Fengyun-4A (FY-4A) PWV data set with high spatial and temporal resolution in China was obtained. Subsequently, using the characteristics of FY-4A PWV with DEM, location, and time, a BPNN-based correction method is proposed to correct the reconstructed FY-4A PWV using the high-precision global navigation satellite system (GNSS) PWV. The results showed that the root mean square error (RMSE), Bias, and Pearson correlation coefficient (R) of the reconstructed model with respect to the FY-4A PWV are 1.32 mm, 0 mm, and 0.99, respectively. Compared with the auxiliary verification data ERA5 PWV, the RMSE, Bias, and R of the reconstructed FY-4A PWV are 0.85 mm, 0.18 mm, and 0.99, respectively. Compared with the GNSS PWV, the RMSE of the corrected FY-4A PWV is 2.44 mm, which is 28.86% lower than that of the reconstructed FY-4A PWV, the Bias is improved from −1.46 mm to 0 mm, and the R is enhanced from 0.98 to 0.99. The reconstruction and correction method of FY-4A PWV with high spatial and temporal resolution proposed in this study dramatically improves the completeness and accuracy of FY-4A PWV in China. It lays the foundation for studying rapid changes in China's hydrological cycle and climate.

Improving GNSS PPP Performance in the South China Under Different Weather Conditions by Using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model‐Derived Wet Delay Corrections

AbstractAtmospheric wet delay caused by Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) significantly impacts the performance of many geodetic surveying systems such as Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). In this study, we use wet delay corrections forecast by the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to enhance GNSS Precise Point Positioning (PPP) during two observation periods with two different weather conditions, that is, period 1: March 01 to 14, 2020 (average PWV: 23.5 kg/m2) and period 2: June 02 to 15, 2020 (flooding weather with average PWV: 55.6 kg/m2), over the South China. PWV data from 277 to 263 GNSS stations are assimilated into WRF model to enhance the WRF water vapor forecasting capability for period 1 and period 2, respectively. Wet delay corrections from two different WRF configurations, that is, WRF no data assimilation and WRF with assimilation of GNSS PWV, are used to augment the PPP. Totally, eight WRF‐enhanced PPP schemes are tested. The results show that WRF‐enhanced PPP schemes generally have a better positioning performance in the up component than traditional PPP. After using WRF wet delay corrections, for static mode, the vertical positioning accuracy is improved by 14.6% and 33.7% for period 1 and period 2, respectively. The corresponding convergence time are reduced by 41.8% and 25.0% for period 1 and period 2, respectively. For kinematic mode, the positioning accuracy improvements in the up component reach 13.8% and 19.0% for period 1 and period 2, respectively. The kinematic PPP convergence time is reduced by up to 8.2% for period 1.

Assessing the Performance of Water Vapor Products from ERA5 and MERRA-2 during Heavy Rainfall in the Guangxi Region of China

Precipitable water vapor (PWV) is a crucial factor in regulating the Earth’s climate. Moreover, it demonstrates a robust correlation with precipitation. Situated in a region known for the generation and development of tropical cyclones, Guangxi in China is highly susceptible to floods triggered via intense rainfall. The atmospheric water vapor in this area displays prominent spatiotemporal features, thus posing challenges for precipitation forecasting. The water vapor products within the MERRA-2 and ERA5 reanalysis datasets present an opportunity to overcome constraints associated with low spatiotemporal resolution. In this study, the PWV data derived from GNSS and meteorological measurements in Guangxi from 2016 to 2018 were used to evaluate the accuracy of MERRA-2 and ERA5 water vapor products and their relationship with water vapor variations during extreme rainfall. Using GNSS PWV as a reference, the average bias of MERRA-2 PWV and ERA5 PWV for heavy rainfall was −0.22 mm and 1.84 mm, respectively, with average RMSE values of 3.72 mm and 3.31 mm. For severe rainfall, the average bias of MERRA-2 PWV and ERA5 PWV was −0.14 mm and 2.92 mm, respectively, with average RMSE values of 4.28 mm and 4.01 mm. During heavy rainfall days from Days 178 to 184 in 2017, the average bias of MERRA-2 PWV and ERA5 PWV was 0.92 mm and 2.42 mm, respectively, with average RMSE values of 4.04 mm and 3.40 mm. The accuracy was highest at the Guiping and Hechi stations and lowest at the Hezhou and Rongshui stations. Furthermore, when comparing MERRA-2/ERA5 PWV with GNSS PWV and actual precipitation, the trends in the variations of MERRA-2/ERA5 PWV were generally consistent with GNSS PWV and aligned with the increasing or decreasing trends of actual precipitation. In addition, ERA5 PWV exhibited high accuracy. Before the onset of heavy rainfall, PWV has a sharp surge. During heavy rainfall, PWV reaches its peak value. Subsequently, after the cessation of heavy rainfall, PWV tends to stabilize. Therefore, the reanalysis data of PWV can effectively reveal significant changes in water vapor and actual precipitation during periods of heavy rainfall in the Guangxi region.

High-accuracy FY-3A/MERSI precipitable water vapour (PWV) data over the continental United States

ABSTRACT Water vapour is an important atmospheric gas with a direct impact on climate and weather. Given the significant variations of water vapour distribution in the tridimensional and temporal space, it is of great significance to use remote sensing data to monitor it on a large scale. One of the main missions of the Medium Resolution Spectral Imager (MERSI) onboard FengYun (FY)-3A satellite is to monitor the distribution of precipitable water vapour (PWV). However, the official MERSI PWV data is not widely used due to the limitation of its accuracy. The primary objective of this study is to develop FY-3A/MERSI PWV data with higher accuracy. The study area of this paper is the continental United States (125°W–65°W, 25°–50°N), and the selected period is the year 2010. Three PWV retrieval models for three near-infrared (NIR) channels (0.905, 0.940 and 0.980 μm) of MERSI are constructed based on the matching results between MERSI data and SuomiNET PWV data. Compared with the existing semi-empirical PWV retrieval algorithms, the algorithm developed in this work has two main changes: (1) MERSI PWV retrieval models are constructed using data after removing outliers rather than all data. (2) The algorithm can identify abnormal retrieval results. The validation results based on PWV data derived from Aerosol Robotic NETwork (AERONET) indicate that these two changes both contribute positively to enhancing the accuracy of MERSI PWV data. The root mean square errors (RMSE) of MERSI PWV data developed using the three channels at 0.905, 0.940 and 0.980 μm are 0.28 cm, 0.22 cm and 0.24 cm, respectively. The relative errors (RE) of these PWV data are 0.14, 0.10 and 0.12, respectively. In comparison to the official MERSI PWV data, the RMSE of MERSI PWV data retrieved in this study is reduced by at least 44%, and RE is reduced by at least 42%.

Multiscale Spatiotemporal Variations of GNSS-Derived Precipitable Water Vapor over Yunnan

The geographical location of Yunnan province is at the upstream area of water vapor transportation from the Bay of Bengal and the South China Sea to inland China. Understanding the spatiotemporal variations of water vapor over this region holds significant importance. We utilized the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data collected from 12 stations situated in Yunnan, which are part of the Crustal Movement Observation Network of China, to retrieve hourly precipitable water vapor (PWV) data from 2011 to 2022. The retrieved PWV data at Station KMIN were evaluated by the nearby radiosonde data, and the results show that the mean bias and RMS of the differences between the two datasets are 0.08 and 1.78 mm, respectively. Average PWV values at these stations are in the range of 11.77 to 33.53 mm, which decrease from the southwest to the north of Yunnan and are negatively correlated with the stations’ heights and latitudes. Differences between average PWV in the wet season and dry season range from 12 to 27 mm. These differences tend to increase as the average PWV increases. The yearly rates of PWV variations, averaging 0.18 mm/year, are all positive for the stations, indicating a year-by-year increase in water vapor. The amplitudes of the PWV annual cycles are 9.75–20.94 mm. The spatial variation of these amplitudes is similar to that of the average PWV over the region. Generally, monthly average PWV values increase from January to July and decrease from July to December, and the growth rate is less than the decline rate. Average diurnal PWV variations show unimodal PWV distributions over the course of the day at the stations except Station YNRL, where bimodal PWV distribution was observed.

An improved typhoon monitoring model based on precipitable water vapor and pressure

The potential of monitoring the movement of typhoons using the precipitable water vapor (PWV) has been confirmed. However, monitoring the movement of typhoon is focused on PWV, making it difficult to describe the movement of a typhoon in detail minutely and resulting in insufficient accuracy. Hence, based on PWV and meteorological data, we propose an improved typhoon monitoring mode. First, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis 5-derived PWV (ERA5-PWV) and the Global Navigation Satellite System-derived PWV (GNSS-PWV) were compared with the reference radiosonde PWV (RS-PWV). Then, using the PWV and atmospheric parameters derived from ERA5, we discussed the anomalous variations of PWV, pressure (P), precipitation, and wind speed during different typhoons. Finally, we compiled a list of critical factors related to typhoon movement, PWV and P. We developed an improved multi-factor typhoon monitoring mode (IMTM) with different models (i.e., IMTM-I and IMTM-II) in different cases with a higher density of GNSS observation or only Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) data. The IMTM was evaluated through the reference movement speeds of HATO and Mangkhut from the China Meteorological Observatory Typhoon Network (CMOTN). The results show that the root mean square (RMS) of the IMTM-I is 1.26 km/h based on ERA5-P and ERA5-PWV, and the absolute bias values are mostly within 2 km/h. Compared with the models considering the single factor ERA5-P/ERA5-PWV, the RMS of the IMTM-I is improved by 26.3% and 38.5%, respectively. The IMTM-II model manifests a residual of only 0.35 km/h. Compared with the single-factor model based on GNSS-PWV/P, the residual of the IMTM-II model is reduced by 90.8% and 84.1%, respectively. These results propose that the typhoon movement monitoring approach combining PWV and P has evident advantages over the single-factor model and is expected to supplement traditional typhoon monitoring.

Retrieving Precipitable Water Vapor Over Land From Satellite Passive Microwave Radiometer Measurements Using Automated Machine Learning

AbstractAccurately retrieving precipitable water vapor (PWV) over wide‐area land surface remains challenging. Unlike passive infrared remote sensing, passive microwave (PMW) remote sensing provides almost all‐weather PWV retrievals. This study develops a PMW‐based land PWV retrieval algorithm using automated Machine learning (ML) (AutoML). Data from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 serve as the main predictor variables and high‐quality Global Positioning System (GPS) PWV data as the target variable. Unprecedentedly large GPS training samples (over 50 million) from more than 12,000 stations worldwide are used to train the AutoML model. New predictors with clear physical mechanisms enable PWV retrieval over almost any land surface type, including snow cover and near open water. Validation shows good agreement between PWV retrievals and ground observations, with a root mean square error of 3.1 mm. This encouraging outcome highlights the potential of the algorithm for application with other PMW radiometers with similar wavelengths.

All-weather precipitable water vapor map reconstruction using data fusion and machine learning-based spatial downscaling

Precipitable water vapor (PWV) detection with high spatial resolution and high accuracy is of significant importance for contributing to extreme weather events monitoring and forecasting. Current PWV products, however, suffer from limitations of spatial and temporal discontinuities, low accuracy, and coarse spatial resolution. To overcome this problem, a data fusion and machine learning-based spatial downscaling solution is proposed. At first, spatially complete PWV maps are generated by integrating calibrated PWV of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the ERA5 PWV data from 2018 to 2022. Subsequently, three spatial downscaling models based on Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT), Multi-layer Perceptron Neural Network (MLPNN), and Random Forest (RF), respectively, are developed to produce high-quality, all-weather PWV considering the land-cover type. It has been verified that the high-quality all-weather PWV maps generated by the GBDT, MLPNN, and RF models exhibit strong agreement with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) PWV estimates. The correlation coefficients are 0.95, 0.87, and 0.87, while the overall Bias is 0.29 mm, 0.67 mm, and 0.35 mm, and the root mean square errors (RMSE) are 1.74 mm, 2.98 mm, and 3.06 mm, respectively. These results significantly enhance the accuracy of MODIS PWV products (R2 = 0.73, RMSE = 5.64 mm, Bias = 3.05 mm). Notably, the GBDT model outperforms the other models in terms of performance. Compared to MODIS PWV, the new PWV map with a data fusion and machine learning-based spatial downscaling approach effectively utilizes the advantage of satellite-based and reanalyzed PWV products, providing continuous, detailed, and reasonable variation in time and space. Moreover, it is less influenced by seasonal changes. The new PWV map has a promising application for regional hydrology and meteorology.

PWV Inversion Model Based on Random Forest and the Trend of Its Conversion Rate with Precipitation in Hubei from 1960 to 2020

In the context of anomalous global climate change and the frequent occurrence of droughts and floods, studying trends in the conversion rate between precipitable water vapor (PWV) and actual precipitation in a certain region can help in analyzing the causes of these natural disasters. This paper examines the variation trend in the conversion rate between PWV and actual precipitation on a monthly scale in Hubei from 1960 to 2020. To estimate historical PWV data, we propose a new method for estimating PWV using water vapor pressure based on the RF algorithm. The new method was evaluated by radiosonde data and improved the accuracy by 1 mm over the traditional method in Hubei. Based on this method, we extrapolate the monthly average PWV in Hubei from 1960 to 2020 and analyze the conversion rate between PWV and precipitation during this period. Our results showed that there was no obvious cyclical pattern in the conversion rate in either the longitude or latitude directions. In Hubei, where the topography varies significantly in the longitude direction, the conversion rate is influenced by topography, with the smallest conversion rate being in the transition zone between the mountainous region of western Hubei and the Jianghan Plain. In the latitudinal direction, the conversion rate decreases with increasing latitude.

Improving the capability of water vapor retrieval from Landsat 8 using ensemble machine learning

Precipitable water vapor (PWV) facilitates the exchange of water and energy between the Earth's surface and the surrounding atmosphere. PWV can be retrieved by employing the water vapor absorption channels in Landsat 8. Unfortunately, the conventional split-window covariance-variance ratio (SWCVR) method is susceptible to various factors, resulting in low retrieval accuracy and availability. Therefore, we improve the traditional SWCVR model and propose a new PWV retrieval method using ensemble machine learning to address these limitations. The new method uses Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT) to establish the model between brightness temperature, GNSS-derived PWV, and related surface parameters. The results of the test set show that the improved SWCVR model has an RMSE, Bias, and availability of 0.4947 g/cm2, 0.0276 g/cm2, and 29.6%, respectively. By contrast, the GBDT model's corresponding values are 0.2870 g/cm2, −0.0094 g/cm2, and 67.9%, respectively. Compared with SWCVR, the GBDT improves the RMSE and availability by 41.99% and 38.3%, respectively. The GBDT algorithm is significantly better than the SWCVR model in low altitude and complex surface coverage areas. From a temporal perspective, the advantages of the GBDT method are more apparent in the summer. Finally, the SWCVR and GBDT models are externally validated using measured PWV data from the sun photometer and radiosonde, and the RMSE is 0.5148 g/cm2 and 0.3775 g/cm2, respectively. Based on the findings, we know that the accuracy of GBDT has significantly improved against the SWCVR.

Water vapour products from ERA5, MERSI‐II/FY‐3D, OLCI/Sentinel‐3A, OLCI/Sentinel‐3B, MODIS/Aqua and MODIS/Terra in Australia: A comparison against in situGPS water vapour data

AbstractAustralia is a region of high sensitivity to the El Niño–Southern Oscillation events in association with atmospheric water vapour, which is an essential atmospheric parameter in hydrological cycle, energy transport and climate monitoring. In this article, we thoroughly validated the quality of multisource precipitable water vapour (PWV) products sourced from ERA5 reanalysis, advanced Medium Resolution Spectral Imager (MERSI‐II) sensor on the FY‐3D satellite, Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) sensor on the Sentinel‐3A and Sentinel‐3B satellites, and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor on the Aqua and Terra satellites. The PWV estimates measured by 453 in situ Global Positioning System (GPS) sites from 1 June 2019 to 31 May 2020 over Australia were employed as the common reference. The validation results show that all the reanalysis‐based and satellite‐based PWV products had a good agreement with reference GPS‐based PWV data. ERA5 reanalysis had the highest PWV accuracy with a root‐mean‐square error (RMSE) of 2.016 mm and a relative RMSE (RRMSE) of 12.038%, while the MODIS/Terra instrument had the lowest PWV accuracy (RMSE = 4.903 mm and RRMSE = 34.187%). In contrast to the MERSI‐II/FY‐3D instrument that underestimated PWV, the PWV data from ERA5, OLCI/Sentinel‐3A, OLCI/Sentinel‐3B, MODIS/Aqua and MODIS/Terra overestimated the water vapour values. The quality of reanalysis‐based and satellite‐based PWV measurements showed significant dependencies on several variables – location, PWV, solar zenith angle, season, elevation, land surface cover and latitude. It is expected that this research can help enhance the understanding of the quality of reanalysis and satellite water vapour products in Australia, that is, ERA5, OLCI/Sentinel‐3A, OLCI/Sentinel‐3B, MODIS/Aqua and MODIS/Terra. This work could provide an insight into improving the accuracy of reanalysis‐based and satellite‐based PWV data products after exploring the dependency factors that affect PWV performance as presented in our work.

Evaluation and Analysis of Remotely Sensed Water Vapor from the NASA VIIRS/SNPP Product in Mainland China Using GPS Data

Precipitable water vapor (PWV) is a vitally important factor in atmospheric circulation. PWV is significant for forecasting extreme weather and understanding the dynamics of climate change. Comprehensively evaluating the performance of newly proposed remotely sensed water vapor products is crucial for guaranteeing their suitability for futural PWV applications. In this study, the accuracy of the recently established remotely sensed water vapor product from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) satellite sensor on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) (VIIRS-PWV) platform within various regions of mainland China was evaluated via the PWV from Global Positioning System (GPS) observations. The GPS-derived PWV from 231 stations of the Crustal Movement Observation Network of China (CMONOC) from 2012 to 2018 was obtained through precise point positioning (PPP) techniques. The results showed that the mean value of the correlation coefficient (CC), the mean bias (MB), and the root-mean-square error (RMSE) between the VIIRS-PWV and the GPS-PWV were 0.92, −1.6 mm, and 4.7 mm, respectively. These values were comparable with the results of the PWV data derived from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) products. This indicates that the VIIRS product could provide PWV data with satisfactory accuracy for large-area scientific applications. Moreover, the MB and RMSE of the differences between the GPS-PWV and VIIRS-PWV showed obvious seasonal variations. The VIIRS-PWV generally performed better in winter (with the MB and RMSE values of 0.1 mm and 2.3 mm) than in summer (with the MB and RMSE values of −4.4 and 7.0 mm). Analysis among different regions revealed that the Central South (CS) region of China attained the largest mean RMSE value of 6.3 mm, and the North West (NW) region attained the smallest mean RMSE value of 3.8 mm. In addition, the southern region of China obtained a mean RMSE value of 5.6 mm, while that for the northern region of China was 3.9 mm. This indicates that the VIIRS-PWV has better accuracy within the northern region of China than within the southern region.

Global statistical assessment of Haiyang-2B scanning microwave radiometer precipitable water vapor

Introduction: As a successor to Haiyang-2A (HY-2A), HY-2B is China’s second marine dynamic satellite. Equipped with a scanning microwave radiometer (SMR), it can measure the precipitable water vapor (PWV) over the oceans, providing valuable climate and weather insights. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of HY-2B SMR PWV data from January 2019 to December 2021 using various validation methods.Methods: to validate HY-2B SMR PWV, fifth-generation European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis (ERA5) data, radiosonde data, and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) observations are used.Results: the validation shows that the HY-2B SMR PWV data agree well with the ERA5 PWV data, with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.61 mm and a mean value of 0.71 mm. However, RMSEs of approximately 3.5 mm are observed when comparing the HY-2B SMR PWV data to GNSS and radiosonde data, likely due to temporal and spatial gaps. Geographically, there are greater differences between the HY-2B SMR and ERA5 in lower-latitude areas. The reason could be attributed to a higher water vapor content and more frequent cloudy weather in the areas.Discussion: The results demonstrate that the HY-2B SMR PWV meets requirement (RMSE≤3.5 mm). The HY-2B SMR PWV has a high quality, with a slight observational drift of only 0.1 mm/year, but regular validation and calibration are still necessary.

An Algorithm to Retrieve Precipitable Water Vapor from Sentinel-2 Data

As one of the most important greenhouse gases, water vapor plays a vital role in various weather and climate processes. In recent years, a near-infrared ratio technique based on satellite images has become a research hotspot in the field of precipitable water vapor (PWV) monitoring. This study proposes a Level 2A PWV data retrieval method based on Sentinel-2 images (S2-L2A), which considers land-cover types and is more suitable for local areas. The radiative transfer model MODTRAN 5 is used to simulate the atmospheric radiative transfer process and obtain lookup tables (LUTs) for PWV retrieval. The spatial distribution of S2-L2A PWV is validated using Global Positioning System (GPS), Terra-MODIS PWV product (MOD05), and Level 2A product provided by ESA (ESA-L2A), while the time series results are evaluated using MOD05. Results show that the PWV retrieved by S2-L2A is both highly correlated and has low bias with the three PWV products, and is closer to the reference data than the MOD05 and ESA-L2A PWV. The relative PWV value in the morning is: bare soil > vegetation-covered area > construction land; as the elevation increases, the PWV value decreases. This study also analyzes the error distribution of the PWV data retrieved by S2-L2A, and finds that inversion error increases with AOT value, but decreases with elevation and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Compared with the three water vapor products, the PWV data retrieved by the proposed method has high accuracy and can provide large-scale and high-spatial-resolution PWV data for many research fields, such as agriculture and meteorology.

Analyzing correlations between GNSS retrieved precipitable water vapor and land surface temperature after earthquakes occurrence

Earthquake is a common and destructive natural disaster. The enormous amount of energy released from seismic events can result in anomalous land surface temperature (LST) and catalyze the accumulation of water vapor in the atmosphere. The majority of previous works are not consensual concerning precipitable water vapor (PWV) and LST after the earthquake. Here, we utilized multi-source data to analyze the changes of PWV and LST anomaly after three Ms 4.0–5.3 crustal earthquakes at low depth (8–9 km) that occurred in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Firstly, PWV retrieval using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology is performed, showing that its root mean square error (RMSE) is less than 1.8 mm against radiosonde (RS) data or European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis 5 (ERA5) PWV data. The PWV change derived from the nearest GNSS stations around the hypocenter during the earthquakes shows anomalies, and the results reveal that PWV anomalies occurred after the earthquakes, mainly obeying a trend of increasing first and then decreasing. In addition, LST increases three days before PWV peak with a thermal anomaly of 12 °C higher than that of previous days. Robust Satellite Technique (RST) algorithm and ALICE index on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LST products are introduced to analyze the correlation between the abnormality of LST and PWV. Based on ten-year background field data (2012–2021), the results show that LST during the earthquake has more thermal anomaly occurrences than in previous years. The more severe the LST thermal anomaly is, the higher the probability of a PWV peak occurring.

Analysis and Evaluation of the Layered Precipitable Water Vapor Data from the FENGYUN-4A/AGRI over the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau

The Layered Precipitable Water Vapor (LPW) product derived from the Advanced Geosynchronous Radiation Imager (AGRI) onboard the first of the Chinese new generation geostationary satellite Fengyun-4A (FY-4A) has great significance for weather forecasting and climate monitoring of the Tibetan Plateau. To analysis and evaluation the reliability of the FY-4A/AGRI LPW, with respect to the complex terrain on the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau, the atmospheric precipitable water vapor values were calculated based on the radiosonde observations (RAOB TPW) of 11 radiosonde stations in the research area from 2019 to 2020, and a comparative analysis was performed with the FY-4A/AGRI LPW. The results indicated that: (1) FY-4A/AGRI LPW and RAOB TPW demonstrate excellent consistency in all of the vertical height layers, but the atmospheric precipitable water vapor was underestimated by FY-4A/AGRI LPW; (2) The mean values of FY-4A/AGRI LPW in various months were all lower than those of RAOB TPW. The low layer FY-4A/AGRI LPW was the most stable in precision from the dimension of months; and (3) The precision of FY-4A/AGRI LPW, and the deviation between FY-4A/AGRI LPW and RAOB TPW were related with RDLS. The evaluation results of the study demonstrated that FY-4A/AGRI LPW underestimated the total water vapor in the research area, but the Bias and RMSE values were relatively low. FY-4A/AGRI LPW had a relatively high precision, and the data from it had superior quality and stability in terms of time changes and spatial distribution. Therefore, the product can perfectly reflect the spatial and temporal variation of the atmospheric water vapor on the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau.

Impact of sand and dust storms on tropospheric parameter estimation by GPS

The transport of dust from the Middle East and African deserts affects European and Asian countries at certain times of the year, especially in spring. Turkey is one of these countries, and many dust storm events have occurred in the first half of 2022, which have affected especially the southeastern part of Anatolia. Apart from threatening human health, dust and sand particles, which are described as particulate matter, may possibly affect Global Positioning System (GPS) signals. The purpose of this research is to look into the effects of particulate matter less than 10μm (PM10) on GPS-estimated precipitable water vapor (PWV). Hourly PM10 and PWV data between April 1, 2022, and June 10, 2022, were utilized. Four different extreme dust concentration events and a benchmark period were investigated separately. Hourly data results showed that correlation coefficients vary according to events, wind directions, and the distance between GPS stations and air quality monitoring stations. Also, other meteorological parameters that affect PWV, such as temperature, relative humidity, and pressure, were investigated and found to have no anomalies that could affect PWV. Hourly and daily correlation coefficients in the benchmark period were significantly lower compared to dusty days, which indicates that there is no real correlation between PM10 and PWV concentrations in clear air conditions. Only with the increase of PM10 to extreme levels does the relationship show itself. Therefore, this study suggests that for all GPS applications, such as positioning or PWV estimation, PM10 concentrations should be considered.

Improving the Accuracy of MODIS Near-Infrared Water Vapor Product Under all Weather Conditions Based on Machine Learning Considering Multiple Dependence Parameters

We developed six machine learning based calibration models to improve the all-weather accuracy of precipitable water vapor (PWV) product from near-infrared (NIR) observations of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument, i.e. MOD05 PWV. The six machine learning approaches are: Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN), Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT), Generalized Regression Neural Network (GRNN), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network (MLPNN), and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). The input of the models included MOD05 PWV, latitude, longitude, elevation, cloud, season, and solar zenith angle, in association with the quality of the MOD05 PWV product. PWV data measured from in-situ 453 Global Positioning System (GPS) stations in Australia in 2017 were utilized as the target water vapor data for model training. The validation results in Australia in 2018–2019 indicate that the models can significantly improve the all-weather quality (increased R <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> , reduced root-mean-square error (RMSE), and reduced mean bias (MB)) of the MOD05 PWV product, exhibiting a reduction in RMSE of 53.33% for BPNN, 55.25% for GBDT, 53.24% for GRNN, 37.81% for KNN, 54.98% for MLPNN, and 55.16% for XGBoost. The R <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> was 0.58 ~ 0.79 and the MB was 0.12 mm ~ 0.72 mm, much better than the MOD05 all-weather PWV product (R <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> = 0.26 and MB = -1.75 mm). Different from previous studies that focused on clear-sky conditions only, this work is the first one to enhance the quality of official MODIS NIR PWV products under all weather conditions, reducing the impact of clouds on PWV products.

Precipitable Water Vapor Retrieval Based on DPC Onboard GaoFen-5 (02) Satellite

GaoFen-5 (02) (GF5-02) is a new Chinese operational satellite that was launched on 7 September 2021. The Directional Polarimetric Camera (DPC) is one of the main payloads and is mainly used for the remote sensing monitoring of atmospheric components such as aerosols and water vapor. At present, the DPC is in the stage of on-orbit testing, and no public DPC precipitable water vapor (PWV) data are available. In this study, a PWV retrieval algorithm based on the spectral characteristics of DPC data is developed. The algorithm consists of three parts: (1) the construction of the lookup table, (2) the calculation of water vapor absorption transmittance (WVAT) in the band at 910 nm, and (3) DPC PWV retrieval. The global PWV results derived from DPC data are spatially continuous, which can illustrate the global distribution of water vapor content well. The validation based on the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) PWV data shows that the DPC PWV data have accuracy similar to that of Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) PWV data, with coefficient correlation of determination (R2), mean absolute error (MAE), and relative error (RE) of 0.32, 0.30, and 0.93 using the DPC and 0.23, 0.36, and 0.96 using the MODIS, respectively. The results show that our proposed DPC PWV retrieval algorithm is feasible and has high accuracy. By analyzing the errors, we found that the calibration coefficients of the DPC in the 865 nm and 910 nm bands need to be updated.
