Pragmatics of Human Communication50 Years Later

Pragmatics of Human Communication (1967) was one of the first books on interpersonal communication and became a standard theory book in communication, psychotherapy, and other fields. Face-to-Face Dialogue (in press) by one of the original co-authors presents subsequent decades of research that revealed both similarities and differences; hence, this article. The goals and frame of reference are the same, focusing on interaction rather than on individuals and on dialogic rather than intrapsychic processes. However, advances in theory and research have modified the explicitly tentative axioms of the original book. Examples of these are: (i) theoretical refinement and microanalysis have rejected “all behavior is communication” in favor of a more precise, less inferential focus on co-speech gestures; (ii) “one cannot not communicate” has fared better; the situational context that leads to “disqualification” (equivocation) has strong support; and (iii) the synchrony of digital and analogic elements in dialogue produces integrated messages rather than separate channels.

Patient-centeredness in the 21st century: Instrumentalisation or improved communication?

Objective: The objective of the current study was to investigate the contemporary concept of patient-centeredness compared to the original notion of patient-centeredness in practice and politics. Methods: This is accomplished through a concept-analysis of patient-centeredness on the basis of the original publications by Michael and Enid Balint as well as policy documents regarding patient-centeredness in the Danish healthcare system in the period 2014-2016. A case study was conducted on patient-centeredness in the Danish healthcare system using interviews with doctor and patient before and after the consultation and video observation of the consultation. The interviews and observations were transcribed and analysed using a framework derived from Pragmatics of Human Communication. Results: Substantial differences between the original patient-centeredness and contemporary patient-centeredness were identified. Both types of patient-centeredness were practised. However, contemporary patient-centeredness was only realised in the patient performing the doctor’s role-obligations of prescribing and monitoring treatment, resulting in a breakdown of the doctor-patient relationship that was only restored by the doctor’s practice of original patient-centeredness. Conclusion: Contemporary patient-centeredness over-emphasises content aspects of the doctor-patient encounter in favour of relationship aspects. Original patient-centeredness emphasises the relationship aspects of the encounter and support addressing existential concerns that might have important implications for treatment.

(Im)politeness in the Iliad: The Pragmatics of the Homeric Expression ἀγαθός περ ἐών

Abstract Every communication has a relationship aspect in addition to a content aspect: this axiom of Watzlawick’s Pragmatics of Human Communication proves useful also when studying the dialogues contained in literary works. The ἀγαθός περ ἐών formula occurring five times in Homer’s Iliad has appeared difficult to interpret precisely because scholars have failed to take into account the relationship aspect of the verbal interactions described. Employed as a conventional politeness formula manifesting respect for the hearer, the ἀγαθός περ ἐών expression could also be used in contexts that clash with a ‘polite’ interpretation, thus generating mock-politeness and, ultimately, ‘impoliteness’.

LOS AXIOMAS DE LA COMUNICACIÓN HUMANA EN PAUL WATZLAWICK, JANET BEAVIN, DON JACKSON Y SU RELACIÓN CON LA TERAPIA FAMILIAR SISTÉMICA

En el siguiente artículo se presentará el análisis de los Axiomas de la Comunicación propuesta por Paul Watzlawick, Janet Beavin y Don Jackson en su libro Teoría de la Comunicación Humana (1985), y su relación con la Terapia Familiar Sistémica. El enfoque de la investigación fue cualitativo y se privilegia la estrategia documental. Los resultados se presentan en dos categorías: Axiomas de la Comunicación y Terapia Familiar Sistémica. Finalmente se concluye que la Terapia Familiar Sistémica y los Axiomas de la Comunicación Humana tienen como punto común la teoría sistémica y las interacciones humanas, y que el quehacer del terapeuta sistémico no sería posible sin el uso de los axiomas de la comunicación.

Definitions of Self and Other in and Through Literary Communication

This paper investigates the dual nature of literary communication as representing fictional identities and interactions, while at the same time, constituting definitions of self and other in the communication between real authors and readers. The main theoretical framework for this paper’s argument is the theory of communication developed and presented by Watzlawick, Bavelas, and Jackson (1967), in their groundbreaking study “Pragmatics of Human Communication”. In the following, their theory of communication is used as a means of situating literature as an interface between the poles of cognition and construction: a field where definitions of identity can be posited and mediated in the interaction between “the only sub-universe...within which we can establish communication with our fellow-men” (Embree, 1998, p. 51), and finite provinces of meaning created by the literary imagination.

This work intends to discuss the communication in the classroom based on four axioms proposed by Watzlawick, Beavin and Jackson. Teaching is presented as a process of formation and transformation of behavior through class communication. In the work “Pragmatics of Human Communication”, teachers play the role of communication catalysts. Based on these axioms, we set the teacher as someone who facilitates and articulates communication. We mention remarkable moments of this experience, all of them applied to classrooms. Keywords: Teaching; Communication in the classroom; Axioms of human communication.

Qualitative content analysis in nursing research: concepts, procedures and measures to achieve trustworthiness

Qualitative content analysis as described in published literature shows conflicting opinions and unsolved issues regarding meaning and use of concepts, procedures and interpretation. This paper provides an overview of important concepts (manifest and latent content, unit of analysis, meaning unit, condensation, abstraction, content area, code, category and theme) related to qualitative content analysis; illustrates the use of concepts related to the research procedure; and proposes measures to achieve trustworthiness (credibility, dependability and transferability) throughout the steps of the research procedure. Interpretation in qualitative content analysis is discussed in light of Watzlawick et al.’s [Pragmatics of Human Communication. A Study of Interactional Patterns, Pathologies and Paradoxes. W.W. Research Into the Pragmatics of Human Communication

This article surveys recent research on interpersonal communication conducted by the Victoria Group and organizes the findings according to the “axioms” proposed in Pragmatics of human communication (Watzlawick, Beavin, & Jackson, 1967). The topics include: establishing when a nonverbal behaviour is a nonverbal communication; investigations of “one cannot not communicate,” including disqualified (equivocal) communication; studies of the communicative context in psychological research; verbal and nonverbal relationship level communication; analogically encoded nonverbal acts; and interpersonal systems. Some of the original propositions have been supported, others modified, and some substantially changed. The relation of research to clinical practice is discussed.

This book, which carries the imprint of the Mental Research Institute of Palo Alto, Calif, deals with human communication as an interaction process. The volume is divided into seven chapters and an epilogue, covering in succession the frame of reference, axioms of communication, pathological communication, general systems principles, analysis of the play "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" double-bind theory, therapeutic paradoxes, and existentialism and the theory of communication. In terms of language and structure the volume is not addressed to the lay public, but to the professionals working in the field. In the midst of a publishing explosion, the first question one might ask about any book is "What is its function?" Is it a research report, a teaching manual, a review, or the formulation of a new approach?
