Navigating sustainable project management in construction: Exploring the differential impact of coercive pressures and ethical responsibility using importance-performance matrix analysis (IPMA)

This study explores the primary drivers influencing sustainable project management (SPM) practices in the construction industry. This research study seeks to determine whether firms are primarily motivated by external pressures or internal values when embracing SPM practices. In doing so, this study contributes to the ongoing discourse on SPM drivers by considering coercive pressures (CP), ethical responsibility (ER), and green transformational leadership (GTL) as critical enablers facilitating a firm’s adoption of SPM practices. Based on data from 196 project management practitioners in Pakistan, structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed to test the hypothesized relationships. Results highlight that CP influences the management of sustainability practices in construction projects, signifying firms’ concern for securing legitimacy from various institutional actors. As an ‘intrinsic value’, ER emerges as a significant motivator for ecological stewardship, driven by a genuine commitment to promoting sustainable development. This study also unveils the significant moderating effect of GTL on the association among CP, ER, and SPM. Lastly, the results of IMPA reveal that ER slightly performs better than CP as it helps firms internalize the essence of sustainability. This research study expands our understanding of SPM drivers in construction projects by exploring the differential impact of external pressures and the firm’s intrinsic values. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners, aiding them in promoting SPM to attain sustainable development goals.

Anticorruption practices in construction projects: looking through two theoretical lenses

PurposeAvailable studies on anticorruption practices in the construction industry are exploratory with a very limited theoretical basis. This paper aims to provide a solid theoretical foundation to examine situational factors that influence the corruption intentions of individuals and organizations in the construction industry.Design/methodology/approachThis paper conducts a systematic literature review to synthesize construction management literature that suggests anticorruption practices. The identified practices are then examined using two theoretical frameworks: the fraud diamond theory and Lange’s corruption control framework.FindingsThe results of this research demonstrate how the four elements of the fraud diamond theory may trigger corrupt behavior in construction projects. The results also highlight conceptual distinctions among different means of corruption controls based on Lange’s corruption control framework. In addition, the findings of this research suggest that anticorruption practices should address (1) the incentives to act corruptly, (2) the normative means of corruption control, (3) the internal means of preventing corruption and (4) the shift in organizational culture.Originality/valueThis paper departs from prior research on corruption in construction projects by (1) identifying a large spectrum of anticorruption practices, (2) presenting a detailed theoretical interpretation of these practices and (3) viewing anticorruption practices as multidimensional constructs, which, in turn, leads to novel ways of examining these practices in construction projects.

Exploring Leadership Styles to Foster Sustainability in Construction Projects: A Systematic Literature Review

Background: The construction sector has faced significant challenges in addressing the world’s pressing crises, such as climate change, poverty, and human well-being. Ensuring sustainability in construction projects is pivotal, and leadership plays a crucial role in embedding sustainable practices. Objectives: This research aims to identify an effective leadership style for implementing sustainable practices in construction projects through a systematic literature review (SLR). Methods: A comprehensive SLR was conducted, focusing on leadership in sustainable construction. The review process included identifying, screening, and analysing relevant literature. Thirty-one articles were meticulously selected and evaluated to understand the relationship between leadership styles and sustainable practices in construction. Results: The findings suggest that no single leadership style is universally applicable in all contexts within sustainable construction. However, transformational leadership stands out for its benefits in facilitating sustainable practices. The review provides insights into various leadership approaches and their effectiveness in different scenarios. Conclusions: The study concludes that while a universal leadership style for sustainable construction does not exist, transformational leadership is generally more effective. This finding is significant for construction project managers aiming to implement sustainable practices, providing them guidance on the leadership styles that are most likely to yield successful outcomes in their projects.

Exploring the Implementation of Agile Project Management in the United States Construction Industry: Benefits, Challenges, and Success Factors

This study was conducted with the aim of investigating the implementation of agile project management methodologies in the construction industry in the United States. The research utilized a review of literature methodology to examine the benefits, challenges, and success factors associated with adopting agile practices in construction projects. By analyzing past studies and scholarly publications, a comprehensive understanding of the topic was achieved. The study highlighted several key benefits of agile project management in the construction industry. These benefits included improved adaptability to changing project requirements, increased client satisfaction through enhanced collaboration and continuous feedback, and greater project transparency and visibility. Additionally, agile methodologies were found to foster more effective risk management and improved project delivery timelines. Challenges encountered during the implementation of agile practices in the construction industry were also identified. These challenges encompassed resistance to change, inadequate stakeholder buy-in, difficulties in integrating Agile with traditional construction practices, and the need for skilled agile practitioners. Understanding these challenges can assist project managers and stakeholders in developing strategies to mitigate potential obstacles. By synthesizing the existing literature, this research provides valuable insights into the implementation of Agile project management in the United States construction industry. Liquid waste management in the construction sector: a systematic literature review

Liquid waste from construction sites can cause significant negative social, economic and environmental impacts. Generally, liquid waste from construction-related trades’ activities, such as product mixing, application and tool washing; stormwater run-off; and leaching of construction material, can pollute surface soil, water bodies and groundwater sources. Therefore, construction projects must have proper management of construction-related liquid waste. This study therefore undertook a systematic literature review (SLR) to analyse the literature on liquid waste management in construction projects. The study used the PRISMA (preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (method)) framework, and the bibliometric tool, VOSviewer, to analyse and present its findings. The SLR process identified and analysed 49 papers, published between 1992 and 2022, and found that liquid waste management was an often-overlooked area within the construction sector. The review identified three liquid waste focus areas: sources and composition of construction liquid waste; construction liquid waste control methods; and construction liquid waste management. The study’s findings identified a lack of integration between research on liquid waste management and research studies on construction site water pollution. The study’s contribution highlights the current progress of construction liquid waste management research and identifies the need for future research on efficient and effective implementation of liquid waste management practices in construction projects.

"Imagine and make": teaching construction robotics for higher education students.

The use of robotics in construction projects is still in its infancy despite the opportunities that robots can present for the improvement of construction practices. One of the strategies to effectively increase the reliance on robots in construction is increasing the knowledge and improving the educational programs about robotics for university students. This paper contributes to the ongoing efforts worldwide to improve the teaching methods about construction robotics through the presentation of a novel method called "Imagine and Make", in which students learn how to integrate robotics in different aspects and practices in construction projects. The method has been applied at Centrale Lille in France since 2018. The results of the application of "Imagine and Make" in the first semester of 2021-2022, evaluation by students, and teaching outcomes are reported in this paper.

IMPLEMENTASI PROTOKOL PENCEGAHAN PENYEBARAN COVID-19 PADA PROYEK KONSTRUKSI JALAN

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is yet to be resolved, and according to epidemiologists, a third wave of the outbreak was expected to occur in February–March 2022. During August–September 2022, the rate of daily COVID-19 exposure in Indonesia remained high. The Indonesian Doctors Association (PB IDI) reported a 36-fold increase in COVID-19 cases in Indonesia, from 107 cases in early May 2022 to 3,949 cases daily. Yogyakarta is the sixth most affected province in Indonesia in terms of COVID-19 exposure. Therefore, it is crucial to examine the implementation of COVID-19 Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) practices in construction projects, specifically in the case of road construction. The Planjan-Baron-Tepus Road and Jogja-Bawen Toll Road are the projects selected for data collection, using observational methods and purposive sampling. Occupational Health and Safety is part of the company's management system, which aims to manage work activity risks and create a safe, efficient, and productive workplace. The survey results indicate that the instrument used is reliable and valid. The management has effectively implemented and communicated COVID-19 prevention measures, and the construction workers are satisfied. The workers show high motivation, awareness, and knowledge in reducing the spread of COVID-19. The workers in Planjan-Baron-Tepus Road construction strictly adhere to personal health protocols in their daily behavior. However, workers in Jogja-Bawen toll road construction are less obedient and require further motivation to be classified as highly obedient.

A qualitative approach to investigate stakeholders' engagement in construction projects

PurposeStakeholder engagement in construction projects is an ingredient that contributes to project optimal performance. Many developing countries have a paucity of literature about stakeholders' engagement in construction projects. Therefore, the study investigated South Africa's shareholders' engagement in construction projects and recommended possible measures to mitigate potential limitations.Design/methodology/approachThe researchers collated data from South African experts in stakeholder engagement via a phenomenology type of qualitative research design. They explored the “perceived hindrances” facing stakeholders' engagement in construction projects and proffer measures to mitigate them. The study analysed collected data via thematic analysis and achieved saturation. Three themes emerged from the analysed data.FindingsFindings show that efficient stakeholder engagement will enhance team collaboration and integrated construction project delivery. Results identified the perceived limitations facing stakeholders' engagement in South Africa's construction projects and categorised them into individual perceived hindrances, organisational perceived hindrances and government-related perceived hindrances. Also, findings proffer measures to mitigate perceived hindrances via policies and programmes within the sector.Practical implicationsBesides enhancing policymakers and other stakeholders in South Africa's construction industry to understand the benefits of stakeholder engagement better, the study may stir up the construction sector's stakeholders to embrace enhanced and effective stakeholders' management.Originality/valueThis study contributes to construction project practice that involves stakeholders, as it reveals the underlying causes of perceived hindrances facing stakeholders' engagement in construction projects. Also, it proffers feasible solutions to mitigate these hindrances and enhance stakeholders' engagement within South Africa's construction projects.

Perception of the benefits of sustainable construction in Ghana

PurposeThe need to adopt sustainable construction (SC) practices in project activities will be appreciated when clear benefits are known to the stakeholders in Ghana. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perceived benefits of using SC practices in building projects.Design/methodology/approachA modified Delphi method (MDM) was used to solicit the views of an expert panel on 33 benefits identified from the literature and validated by a pilot panel to ensure robustness. Statistical tools were used to analyse the data collected. The comparative analysis among the expert panel lends credence to the strong consensus reached on the 26 benefits of SC. The consensus reached by the expert panel after the three rounds were validated using the median and important scale of 70% response rate and above.FindingsThe essential benefits included the ability to enhance efficiency and improve the overall quality of life for all. Factors such as mandatory government policies and regulations are recommended as essential drivers to promote and sustain the implementation of SC in Ghana. The findings will enhance the drive for sustainability practices in construction projects in Ghana.Originality/valueThe study contributes to the body of knowledge regarding the benefits of SC from the perspective of experts in the Ghanaian construction industry. The paper would enhance stakeholders understanding the critical benefits of promoting and adopting SC practices in building projects.

Indikator Penyebab Praktik Korupsi pada Industri Konstruksi di Sumatera Barat

The main objective of this research is to identify and analyze indicators of the causes of corrupt practices in the construction sector in West Sumatra. Research methodology used descriptive statistics and inferential statistical analysis used in the test is Cronbach's Alpha. The results of Cronbach's Alpha test can be seen in the value in the Corrected Item-Total Correlation column for the number of variables as many as 30 can be seen in r table 0.361. This is also supported by Cronbach's alpha value of 0.960. The indicator that causes corruption in the first rank is the existence of tender evaluations that do not meet the criteria (X9). Conclusion in this research are 10 variables (out of 30 variables) indicators of the causes of corrupt practices in construction projects in West Sumatra.

A study on risk management practices in construction projects in India: from project organisation's perspective

The research paper aims to examine respondent's profile, in percentage, so as to identify the results of covariance and analysis of variance between role and experience level, critical risks in construction projects based on response, correlation between performance indicators, the influence of overall performance on profitability of a firm, the reliability of performance indicators, and to develop a risk assessment and management model. The results revealed that there is a significant positive correlation between project quality, project cost control, and on-time delivery with overall performance, while procurement risk is the highest factor of risk as opined by the respondents among all other risks. The risk management cycle consists of nine kinds of processes: 1) risk identification and assessment; 2) risk budgeting and monitoring; 3) risk elimination plan; 4) risk register monitoring and controlling; 5) risk treatment process; 6) risk dilution performance; 7) risk significant impacts and mitigation; 8) reconciling risk budget; 9) re-structuring the risk budget.

Multidimensional study of factors influencing sustainable construction adoption in Yemen: insights for implementing sustainable practices.

Despite political volatility, Yemen's construction sector is gradually progressing to satisfy the country's housing needs. Most construction projects, however, employ traditional construction methods and have yet to be able to adopt sustainable construction, which is economically feasible, socially responsible, and environmentally beneficial. To support sustainable construction, this study analyzes various factors that might drive sustainable practices in construction projects in Yemen. These drivers are discovered from the literature and validated by experts using grey Delphi. Forty-four drivers were approved across three dimensions: economic, social, and environmental. These drivers are assessed using grey AHP. The economic factor is determined to be the most crucial in the adoption of sustainable construction. Competitiveness, improved well-being, and improved indoor environmental quality are rated as the top economic, social, and environmental dimensions, respectively. Overall, competitiveness is acknowledged as the most important driver for the implementation of sustainable practices in Yemen's construction projects. The study's findings were discussed with the experts who were involved in the evaluation. The findings were agreed upon, and it was underlined that a proactive approach from both construction project participants and public authorities can increase the competitiveness of sustainable construction. Additional policies to promote competitiveness of sustainable construction are also advocated.

Identification and assessment of disruption claim management risks in construction projects: a life cycle-based approach

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to propose a disruption claim management (DCM) life cycle and a risk management framework to provide comprehensive guidance to construction practitioners for facilitating effective and efficient DCM.Design/methodology/approachDCM life cycle was initially developed through a focus group discussion (FGD) with the participation of the construction practitioners who have diverse experiences about DCM. The life cycle is comprised of 6 phases and also includes proper reactions of the owners and contractors. Then, 42 risk factors that can impact the deliverables of DCM were identified through a literature review and an additional FGD session. This was then followed by a Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP) which was performed to evaluate the importance of each risk factor in terms of the factor's impact on the success of DCM. Additionally, consistency analysis was performed to further maximize the reliability of the results.FindingsFindings revealed that a proactive and systematic approach should be adopted and DCM practices should be initiated before any disruption event is triggered. Accordingly, the proposed framework recommends DCM practices to be initiated early in the contract development phase since compensation for the disruption might be recovered only to the extent that the contract permits. The contract-related risks were given top priority by the experts so that the results of the fuzzy AHP analysis also verified the significance of the contract development phase. Besides contract-related risks, risks related to insufficient site observation, ignorance of the project team, cognitive bias and conflict of interest were determined as the most significant DCM risks, needing an urgent and sophisticated risk response plan. Lastly, results suggested that “Site observation and record-keeping” is the most formidable phase since the phase's implementation on a continuous basis could create unforeseen organizational challenges such as mismanagement of project records, especially in the dynamic and turbulent environment of the construction projects.Originality/valueDisruption – which is caused mostly by change – is inevitable in construction projects due to their sophisticated nature. DCM, therefore, becomes crucial to compensate losses of contractors and eliminate or diminish the prolonged dispute resolution process. Existing studies, however, do not provide a comprehensive theoretical basis for the DCM life cycle and DCM life cycle's potential risks so that DCM life cycle's promising benefits can hardly be materialized. Thus, developing a DCM life cycle and associating DCM life cycle with risk management, this study is highly believed to make a promising theoretical contribution to the DCM domain since this is one of the earliest attempts in the literature. Additionally, this research provides construction practitioners with an insight into the effective implementation of DCM practices in construction projects.

Workers' relational identification with supervisors influences safety behaviour in construction projects

PurposeThis research aims to examine the influence of workers' identification with their supervisors on safety behaviour in construction projects.Design/methodology/approachEmploying the job demands–resources theory, this research tested the relationships among relational identification as a personal resource, respectful engagement as a job resource, employee safety voice as a positive work behaviour and safety behaviour as the outcome. Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was used to analyse 120 quantitative data collected using a questionnaire survey.FindingsRelational identification, which reflects workers' identification with their supervisors, is a significant predictor of safety behaviour. Furthermore, respectful engagement and employee safety voice sequentially mediate the relationship between relational identification and safety behaviour.Research limitations/implicationsThe internalisation of safety norms, values and practices in construction projects is contingent on the identification of workers with their supervisors.Originality/valueSafety behaviour of workers is a significant predictor of safety performance in construction projects. Research on numerous antecedents of safety behaviour points out that leadership is a significant predictor of construction workers' safe behaviour. Contributing to research on construction safety leadership, this research found that leader-subordinate relationship is key to make construction workers more psychologically ready to internalise the importance of safety behaviours at work.

The effects of COVID-19 on safety practices in construction projects

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic was recognized as a worldwide epidemic and classed as a high risk in early 2020, affecting people's health, economies, and business sectors considerably. This pandemic has had an impact on people's lifestyles and work processes in a multitude of sectors. The construction industry is one such industry that has had a substantial influence on it. However, this influence needs to be measured in different areas. This study aims to measure the effects of the COVID-19 on the 7 core safety elements and their 24 procedures that are derived from the recommended practices for safety and health programs in construction that is issued by OSHA to see whether their priorities have been changed or not. The data were collected and then analyzed using Relative Importance Index (RII) to study the changes in their priorities; and using t-test to study the significance of the changes before and after COVID-19 pandemic.

Machine learning-integrated 5D BIM informatics: building materials costs data classification and prototype development

Non-informatics cost estimation is a tedious process and requires substantial amount of time and manual operations. However, BIM adoption approaches have attracted significant attention with this respect. Since BIM models are object-based with built-in parametric information, it is easier to capture the quantities of building elements and deliver more accurate estimates with less errors and omissions. As most of the current cost estimation standards are designed and developed based on old-fashioned construction project delivery systems, a lack of compatibility between their classification and BIM-based informatics is observed. This study, therefore, aims to develop an informatics framework to integrate a cost estimation standard with BIM in order to expedite the 5D BIM process and enhance the digital transformation practices in construction projects. The developed framework is considered to be a new approach which can automatically estimate the cost of building elements using machine learning-integrated algorithms and MATLAB engine for its effective implementation.
