Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men and early detection improves its prognosis. Meanwhile, testicular self-examination (TSE) is a secondary prevention measure that is easy to perform and helps in the early detection of testicular cancer. There are limited studies to report the level of knowledge and practice of testicular self-examination. Therefore, this study is aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of testicular self-examination among male undergraduate students of Computing and Engineering Sciences in Babcock University, Ilishan Remo, Ogun State. A descriptive cross-sectional research with a sample of 290 undergraduate students was used for the study. The students offering a course in Computer school were purposively selected from the School of Computing and Engineering Sciences, a multistage sampling technique was used and they were stratified based on their educational levels. A simple random sampling technique was used to select the respondents. A self-structured online questionnaire was used for data collection. Ethical clearance to conduct the study was obtained from Babcock University Ethical Review Committee. Permission to conduct the study was sought from the School of Computing and Engineering Sciences in Babcock University and an informed consent form was attached to the questionnaire. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Results show that most of the participants (88.3%) were within the ages of 15-20. The majority (54.1%) had good knowledge of TSE, 41.0% had a positive attitude, but only 14.8% had ever practiced TSE and only 11.4 % had ever had their testicles examined by medical personnel. Despite good knowledge of TSE in this study, the findings revealed that knowledge is not commensurate to attitude and practice. This underscores the need to increase the awareness of TC and TSE among young men. Clinical testicular examination and education needs to be incorporated into routine examinations of young males.

Knowledge Attitude and Practice of Testicular Self Examination among Male Undergraduate Students in Ekiti State University

About half of men never or seldom check their testicles which has led many to late detection of testicular cancer, howbeit the dramatic increase in cancer-related mortality and morbidity is avoidable and curable if detected in its earliest stages. This study assessed the knowledge attitude and practice of testicular self-examination among male undergraduate students in Ekiti State University. A descriptive cross-sectional survey research design was used for the study. The study population consists of Male Undergraduate Students in department of Computer Science, Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti state. The sample size was determined with the use of Taro Yamane’s method which yielded sample size of 290. Proportionate stratified random sampling technique was used to select the sample size. A semi-structured questionnaire administered via online goggle form was used to collect data. The collected data was coded and analyzed using SPSS version 25. The two – null hypothesis in the study was tested using Chi-square, at 0.05 level of significance. The research found out that 59.0 percent of respondents had an unfavourable view of TSE, whereas 41.0 percent had a favourable view. Even though the respondents had a high level of information, that didn't seem to have any effect on their attitudes, which suggests that people aren't willing to adopt the desirable steps that may lead to the early identification of testicular cancer. The findings revealed that there is no significant (p = 0.67) association between level of knowledge of TSE and the practice, also no significant (p < 0.001) association between attitude of TSE and the practice. It was recommended among others that TSE has to be a standard part of medical checkups. Health education on TSE should be provided to all young men for any reason when they visit a healthcare facility, along with a patient pamphlet that details the suggested process, instruments, and frequency of practise.

The awareness and practice of testicular self-examination among male undergraduates in Nigeria: a descriptive cross-sectional study

BackgroundTesticular cancer is a relatively rare form of cancer but curable. In Nigeria, late presentation hinders treatment due to limited resources for diagnosis and treatment. Testicular self-examination enables men to identify the presence of lumps and any abnormality in their testes. This can facilitate early detection and presentation at hospitals. The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness and practice of testicular self-examination by students at a College of Health Sciences in a Nigerian university.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted. The target population were second-sixth year students in the College of Health Sciences. The respondents were conveniently selected to complete a 38-item, self-administered questionnaire. The paper-based questionnaire was distributed to 280 respondents in classrooms and dormitories. Descriptive statistics (such as percentages and frequencies) were used to summarize the frequency of categorical data.ResultsOf the 277 respondents, only 53.4% (n = 148) have heard about testicular self-examination. The mean age was 20.6 (± 4.51) years. Out of the 148 respondents, only 11.6% practiced it regularly. For majority of the respondents, the barriers mitigating the practice of testicular self-examination are the fear of discovering a lump and lack of knowledge.ConclusionIt is necessary for the importance of testicular self-examination to be emphasized in the training of nurses, medical doctors, and other healthcare professionals and its practice should be encouraged among health science students. This will equip these students with the knowledge and skills for their health and to educate their patients and the society on the relevance of testicular self-examination.

Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Testicular Self Examination among Male Undergraduate Students of University of Nigeria Enugu Campus

Background: Testicular cancer (TC) is the most common cancer in males between the age of 15 and 34 years with an incidence rates for new cases rising on an average of 0.8% each year over the last 10 years. Testicular self-examination (TSE) is the recommended preventive approach to reduce testicular Cancer (TC) mortality and morbidity.
 Objectives: This study examines the knowledge, attitude and practice of TSE among male undergraduate students.
 Methods: A descriptive research design with a sample of 343 students was recruited for the study. The students were stratified based on their faculties and convenient sampling was used to select the respondents. A self-structured questionnaire was used for data collection.
 Result: The findings showed that more than average (57.7%) have heard about TSE, but the level of knowledge is poor, as only (35%) have good knowledge. Their attitude is poor as (83.8%) feels it is embarrassing to touch their scrotum. Due to the poor knowledge and attitude, the majority of the respondents 133 (69.43%) did not practice TSE. Of those 59 (30.7%) that practiced, only 20 (33.9%) respondents carried it out monthly as recommended. Chi-square analysis revealed a significant relationship between their knowledge of TSE and TSE practices (p = 0.006). Conclusion: This suggests that information should be provided to the public especially; young men through television, billboard, and other media on the need for regular TSE and TSE should be integrated into the secondary school curriculum.

Background Testicular cancer is a malignant tumor of the testicles, the male reproductive organs that produce sperm and testosterone. It is one of the most common cancers in young men. This form of cancer can be easily diagnosed by self-examination of testicles and is curable if detected early. Periodic self-examination must be performed for early detection. Due to lack of knowledge on testicular cancer and testicular self-examination techniques, patients can potentially miss early detection. This study is aimed at assessing the knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding testicular cancer and testicular self-examination among male college students pursuing a Bachelor's degree. Methods A web-based cross-sectional analytical study was adopted to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of testicular cancer and testicular self-examination among male college students pursuing a Bachelor's degree and living in Bharatpur Metropolitan City in the Chitwan District of Nepal. The snowball sampling technique was employed to identify the eligible participants. Collected data were entered in SPSS version 22 and analyzed by using the Chi-square test, Pearson's correlation, and binary logistic regression. Results Out of 402 respondents, majority (56.7%) had poor knowledge regarding testicular cancer and testicular self-examination and only 11.4% had performed testicular self-examination. The majority (67.2%) of the respondents had shown an unfavorable attitude towards testicular cancer (TC) and testicular self-examination (TSE). There was a significant association between the level of knowledge and marital status 4.516 (1.962-10.397) and ethnicity 2.606 (1.443-4.709). Likewise, age 0.396 (0.191-0.821) and marital status 0.347 (0.156-0.775) have been significantly associated with testicular self-examination practice. Regarding favorable attitude, age 0.362 (0.186-0.706) and sources of information from mass media 2.346 (1.328-4.143) have been associated significantly. Conclusion The study finding shows that the knowledge on testicular cancer and testicular self-examination was low. Due to lack of knowledge and trainings, the potential opportunities for early detection of testicular cancer are missed substantially. Periodic testicular self-examination is vital for early detection of testicular cancer. Hence, it is crucial to implement massive educational campaigns and trainings on testicular cancer and testicular self-examination techniques among young male groups.

Determination of high school students' knowledge regarding testicular cancer and testicular self‐examination

AbstractDo male high school students know about testicular cancer and testicular self‐examination (TSE)? Testicular cancer (TC) is increasing among young men, who demonstrate a lack of knowledge about TC and TSE. The aim of this research was to state the knowledge and attitudes regarding TC and the practice of TSE among male high school students. The assessment of the literature addressing high school students' knowledge regarding TC and TSE has shown a common lack of awareness and knowledge about this disease. Moreover, very few males perform TSE. This descriptive, cross‐sectional study was conducted in May and October 2019 with 1343 male students aged 14–21 years from six different high schools in Turkey. The survey consisted of knowledge, attitudes and awareness regarding TC and TSE. A survey was performed immediately before the end of student courses and again during courses after the start of the next school year. Data from all six schools were collected in a common database. The survey showed that 58.2% of the participants had never heard of TC and 85.8% had never heard of TSE. Additionally, 84.3% of the participants did not perform TSE, and 85% did not know how to perform TSE. The present study found that knowledge regarding TC and the performance of TSE was weak among high school students. Concerning students' attitudes, 85.6% of the students reported that testicular cancer is a severe disease, and 82.1% of the students reported that TSE is significant for the early detection of this disease. These findings indicate that students have very little information about TC and TSE. It would be useful to provide TC and TSE training for health professionals. Good knowledge and awareness regarding TC are associated with performing TSE.

The Association Between Testicular Self-Examination and Stages of Testicular Cancer Diagnosis: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Purpose: Testicular cancer (TC) is the most prevalent tumor diagnosed in men 15-40 years of age. Survivorship and quality of life dramatically decrease with late-stage diagnosis. Testicular self-examination (TSE) is a diagnostic method used to discover early-stage tumor incidence. This study examines the relationship between practicing TSE and stage of diagnosis for TC survivors. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was employed, a 40-item survey among TC survivors (n = 619). Bivariate analyses consisted of Spearman Rho correlations of all primary variables with stage diagnosis of TC. Multivariate analysis employed an ordered logistic regression to determine stage diagnosis predictors. Results: "Regular" TSE practice significantly related with awareness (r = 0.4533) and knowledge of (r = 0.4866) TSE, confidence performing TSE (r = 0.4961), and feeling shape/feel differences of the testicle before diagnosis (r = 0.2115). Factors that had a statistically significant negative association with later-stage diagnosis included awareness (r = -0.1180) and knowledge of (r = -0.1586) TSE, confidence performing TSE (r = -0.1138), and feeling shape/feel differences of the testicle before diagnosis (r = -0.2938), among others. Regular TSE practice significantly predicted decreased odds of later-stage diagnosis within the sample subset reporting delay (odds ratio = 0.1628; p < 0.05); however, there was no significant relationship between regular TSE practice and stage diagnosis within the other model variations. Conclusion: This exploratory analysis aimed to provide baseline evidence of the possible association between the practice of TSE and the stage of TC diagnosis, and therefore making an indirect claim that TSE has the potential to improve quality of life and decrease TC mortality, particularly among adolescents and young adults.

Knowledge and practice of testicular self-examination among secondary students at Ntare School in Mbarara District, South western Uganda.

IntroductionTesticular self-examination (TSE) is a screening technique that involves inspection of the appearance and palpation of the testes to detect any changes from the normal. Globally, the incidence of cancer has increased among which is testicular cancer (TC). Data on this topic among male secondary school adolescents in Uganda is limited therefore this study sought to assess the knowledge and practice of testicular self-examination among secondary students at Ntare School, Mbarara District in south western Uganda. The objective of the study is to assess the knowledge and practice of testicular self-examination among secondary students at Ntare School in Mbarara district, south western Uganda.MethodsWe conducted a descriptive cross-sectional quantitative study among 165 students. Recruitment was made using simple random sampling technique. Respondents were selected among advanced level (A’ level) male students studying at Ntare School in Mbarara district, south western Uganda. Structured self-administered questionnaires were used for data collection.ResultsOf the male students, 41.8% reported to have knowledge about TSE and only 23.6% practiced TSE. Most students rated their knowledge of TSE to be below 5 (from 1-10). Of the 39 students who admitted performing TSE, only 16 did so as recommended (monthly).ConclusionThe knowledge and practice of TSE were low among adolescent secondary school boys in Ntare School in Mbarara District, south western Uganda. This suggests that these students are unaware of the value of this personal health promotion tool which is fundamental in early diagnosis of testicular cancer.

Background: Testicular cancer (TC) is the most common cancer among 15–35-year-old males and the incidence is increasing. This form of cancer is easily diagnosable by testicular self-examination (TSE) and is 96% curable if detected early. Objective: To assess awareness and practice of testicular self-examination among regular undergraduate Male Health Sciences University students, Debre Tabor, North West Ethiopia. Patients and Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study design was conducted. The study participants were stratified based on their year of study and selected by simple random sampling method. Pretested and structured self-administered questionnaire were used. The data were entered to EpiData version 3.1 statistical software and exported to Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 22.0 for analysis. Both bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed to identify associated factors. P Conclusion: knowledge and practice of TSE among respondents were poor. The reason not to perform TSE, as revealed in the study was not caring the examination and lack of knowledge toward TSE. They are unaware of their risk for TC, which is the most common neoplasm in this age group. Providing regular health education toward TSE is important to improve the knowledge of.

Testicular self examination among Bahir Dar University students: application of integrated behavioral model

BackgroundThough the incidence of Testicular cancer among young is rising, little attention is given to promoting testicular self-examination which is recommended for its early prevention in developing countries. This study aimed to assess testicular self-examination and associated factors among Bahir Dar University students using integrated behavioral model.MethodsCross sectional study was conducted among Bahir Dar University students in September, 2016. Systematic sampling technique was used to select 884 participants. Data was collected using self-administer questionnaire, entered into EPI Data 3.1 and exported to SPSS 21 for analysis. Path analysis was done using STATA 14.2 to check causal effect of integrated behavioral model constructs on testicular self-examination. Internal reliability of the items was checked using Cronbach’s alpha. Multivariable linear and Logistic regression were used to predict the role of independent variable on Intention and TSE respectively. Findings with p-value <0.05 at 95% confidence interval were considered as statistically significant in the final model.ResultsOnly 11.8% of the students practiced testicular self-examination in the previous year. Experiential and Instrumental attitude, Perceived control and Self-efficacy were significantly predicted behavioral intention with β coefficient 0.33, 0.12, −0.08 and 0.36. Students’ academic unit [OR = 0.31, 95% CI: 0.15–0.63], educational status of student’s father AOR = 2.25; CI: 1.15–4.44] and [AOR = 3.00; CI: 1.36–6.64], Intention [OR = 1.2, 95% CI: 1.1–1.31], Know-how of TSE [OR = 3.35, 95% CI:1.94–5.80] and knowledge [AOR = 3.93; CI: 2.30–6.72] were the significant predictors of testicular self-examination. The finding of path analysis also demonstrated as Experiential and Instrumental attitude, Perceived control and Self-efficacy have significant effect on intention with path coefficient of 0.33, 0.12, −0.07 and 0.36. Intention, Knowledge and Know-how have effect on testicular self-examination with path coefficient of 0.2, 0.36 and 0.22 respectively.ConclusionsMagnitude of testicular self-examination is low among university students and it is a product of the type of the college, family educational status, intention, Know-how and knowledge. So, behavior change communication strategy that focus on these behavioral factors should be designed and implemented to improve students’ regular practice of testicular self-examination.

Testicular Cancer and Testicular Self-Examination; Knowledge, Attitudes and Practice in Final Year Medical Students in Nigeria

The testicular cancer (TCa) incidence is increasing in many countries, with age-standardized incidence rates up to 7.8/100,000 men in the Western world, although reductions in mortality and increasingly high cure rates are being witnessed at the same time. In Africa, where rates are lower, presentation is often late and morbidity and mortality high. Given this scenario, awareness of testicular cancer and practice of testicular self-examination among future first response doctors is very important. This study was conducted to determine knowledge and attitude to testicular cancer, and practice of testicular self-examination (TSE) among final (6th) year medical students. In addition, the effect of an intervention in the form of a single PowerPoint® lecture, lasting 40 minutes with image content on testicular cancer and testicular self examination was assessed. Pre and post intervention administration of a self-administered structured pre tested questionnaire was performed on 151 medical students, 101 of whom returned answers (response rate of 66.8%). In the TC domain, there was a high level of awareness of testicular cancer, but poor knowledge of the age group most affected, with significant improvement post intervention (p<0.001). Notable also was the poor awareness of the potential curability of TC, this also being improved following the intervention (p<0.001). A poor level of awareness and practice of testicular self-examination pre-intervention was found considering the nature of the study group. Respondents had surprisingly weak/poor responses to the question “How important to men’s health is regular testicular self-examination?” Answers to the questions “Do you think it is worthwhile to examine your testis regularly?” and “Would you be interested in more information on testicular cancer and testicular self-examination?” were also suboptimal, but improved post intervention p<0.001, p<0.001 and p=0.037. Age, gender and marital status were without specific influence. In conclusion, this study showed poor levels of knowledge regarding epidemiology of TCa and its potential curability when detected early. There was also a poor awareness of, practice of, and poor attitudes to TSE. The significant improvement in these parameters post intervention indicates value in educational intervention. We recommend inclusion of TCa coverage and TSE teaching in the secondary school curriculum (targeting adolescents). Greater emphasis should also be given to testicular cancer in the curricula of medical schools and other training institutions for health care personnel.

Knowledge, Attitudes and Practice of Testicular Self- examination among Male University Students from Bangladesh, Madagascar, Singapore, South Africa and Turkey.

The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge, attitude and practice of testicular self-examination (TSE) among male university students from low income (Bangladesh, Madagascar), middle income (South Africa, Turkey) and emerging economy (Singapore) countries. Using anonymous questionnaires, data were collected from 2,061 male undergraduate university students aged 16-30 (mean age 21.4, SD=2.4) from 5 universities in 5 countries across Asia and Africa. Overall, 17.6% of the male students indicated that they knew how to perform TSE; this knowledge proportion was above 20% in Bangladesh and Singapore, while it was the lowest (12.2%) in Madagascar. Among all men, 86.4% had never practiced TSE in the past 12 months, 7.1% 1-2 times, 3.5% 3-10 times, and monthly TSE was 3.1%. The proportion of past 12 month TSE was the highest (17.6%) among male university students in South Africa and the lowest (7.3%) among students in Singapore. Logistic regression found that TSE importance or positive attitude was highly associated with TSE practice. TSE practices were found to be inadequate and efforts should be made to develop programmes that can increase knowledge related to testicular cancer as well as the practice of testicular self-examination.

Effect of video-based teaching module on knowledge about testicular cancer and testicular self-examination among male undergraduate students

Introduction: Testicular cancer (TC) is the most common neoplasm affecting males between 15 and 35 years of age and testicular self-examination (TSE) has been recommended for its early detection and treatment. Aim: This study evaluated the effect of video-based teaching module (VBTM) on knowledge about TC and TSE among male undergraduate students of a selected college in Bangalore. Materials and Methods: A preexperimental (one group pretest-posttest) study design was adopted, and a purposive sampling technique was used to select 87 participants. Tool for data collection was a self-developed structured questionnaire which was used to assess participants' knowledge of TC and TSE before and after the educational intervention (VBTM). Data collected were analyzed with SPSS 17.0 presenting them in descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: Findings showed that the pretest knowledge score of participants was very poor, and the rate of TSE practice was also very low. Participants' pretest awareness was associated with their attempt/practice of TSE (P = 0.001). After the intervention, there was a significant increase in participants' knowledge. Majority (54%) and 32 (36.8%) had very good and good knowledge, respectively, after the intervention. There was a highly significant difference between the overall pretest knowledge level (mean = 12.66, standard deviation [SD] = 4.62) and posttest knowledge level (mean = 25.7, SD = 3.62) at P ≤ 0.001. Conclusion: VBTM used in this study was effective in improving the knowledge of TC and TSE among male undergraduate students.

Evaluation of the effectiveness of testicular cancer and testicular self-examination training for patient care personnel: intervention study.

Testicular cancer (TC) is the most common malignancy among men aged 15-35 years. Testicular self-examination (TSE) is an important tool for preventing late-stage TC diagnoses. This study aimed to assess health beliefs and knowledge related to TC and TSE and the effectiveness of TC and TSE training for patient care staff in a hospital. This was a prospective, randomized, controlled intervention study. The study included 96 patient care staff divided into two groups of 48 participants each: Group I, the interactive education group, and Group II, the pamphlet education group. The results demonstrated that TSE practice and TC knowledge significantly increased in both Group I and Group II. Significant differences were observed between the groups pre and post education. TSE and TC knowledge levels were higher for participants in Group I than those in Group II. There was a significant difference in the performance of TSEs between groups: the rates were 83.3% in Group I and 54.2% in Group II. Perceived confidence and perceived barriers increased significantly for both groups. Interactive education sessions should be used to train men at risk for TC to perform TSEs.

Testicular Self-Examination in an Adult Community Sample

The study investigated the impact of relationship status on participants' knowledge of testicular cancer and their current and planned testicular self-examination (TSE) behavior. Adult male civil servants (N = 188) were recruited in the northwest of the United Kingdom (mean age = 33.37 years, SD = 10.77). The survey instrument asked about current and intended TSE practice, knowledge of testicular cancer, as well as attitudes and beliefs toward testicular cancer and self-examination. Factor analysis identified five factors equating to the benefits of TSE, fear, perceived risk, knowledge, and fatality. In logistic regression models, the benefits of TSE, fear, and knowledge significantly predict current TSE behaviors, whereas the benefits of TSE and perceived risk predicted future TSE intentions. Models predicting TSE practice differed according to relationship status. The findings suggest that strategies designed to promote TSE should be sensitive to individual differences in the influences on a person's motivation to engage in TSE.
