The Dynamics of Social Entrepreneurship in Tunisia after the Revolution of 14 January 2011: The Elements of the Concept, the Elements of the Context and the Elements of Implementation

Social entrepreneurship has emerged since the 1980s in both the United States and Europe to address the social, ecological, and environmental problems that have destabilised existing economic systems around the world. Since the end of the 1990s, scientific production has been proliferating on this subject, but there is no consensus and a unifying paradigm as to the definition of the concept. This is due to the distinctions in the conception and practice of social entrepreneurship in different contexts, especially in Europe and the United States. Reflecting and practicing social entrepreneurship thus remains subject to the specificities of the geographical context. This work is in line with this perspective, as we seek to understand the characteristics of social entrepreneurship in Tunisia by positioning ourselves in relation to three components: the elements of context, the elements of concept, and the elements of implementation. This work is exploratory, and we adopt a qualitative approach through semi-directive interviews addressed to the actors of the Tunisian ecosystem as well as to social enterprises belonging to several sectors.

COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION ON INTENTIONS OF STUDENTS IN SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP

The capacity to affect change on a local and global scale about a range of political, social, environmental, and economic challenges is known as social entrepreneurship (SE). Young exposure to theory and practice of social entrepreneurship at postsecondary educational institutions is thought to influence this change. In this study, we examine the intentions of students in social entrepreneurship. This study's objective is to assess the degrees of social and entrepreneurial entrepreneurship. For the study, 150 college students served as the sample. This study examines empathy, moral duty, social support, self-efficacy, social impact, and educational level as principal motivators for social entrepreneurship intentions. The SPSS is a software program used to analyse the data and perform statistical analyses. The findings indicate that the only factors that were statistically correlated with the desire to engage in social entrepreneurship were empathy, self-efficacy, and psychological support. The association between social support and the ambitions for social entrepreneurship was shown to be unfavourable. In conclusion, the study provides insightful information for practitioners and educators who aim to foster a vibrant environment for student social entrepreneurship.

The Role of Digital Social Entrepreneurship in Driving Green Economy and SDGs

<p class="Default"><em><span lang="EN-US">Environmental conservation and sustainable development are gaining increasing attention globally. Environmental problems such as climate change, environmental degradation, and resource crises are the focus of the attention of various parties, including the community, government, and private sector. This research aims to explore the role of the digital ecosystem and social entrepreneurship practices among the youth of Lintang Nuswantara Cirebon in supporting the Green Economy and Sustainable Development Goals. A qualitative approach with a case study was used to understand the role of this ecosystem. The results of this study show that excellent programs such as Youth Social Care Camp (YSCC), Lintang Muda Mengabdi (LMM), and the mangrove planting program with NGO Grow Up Institute (GUI) have contributed positively to advancing the Green Economy and achieving Sustainable Development Goals. This community has successfully created a sense of mutual aid and empowered the community through innovative digital initiatives</span></em></p>

Can women empowerment contribute to sustainable growth – examining the enablers for social enterprise performance of women social entrepreneurs in India

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that drive superior social enterprise performance for women-led social enterprises. The authors examined the role of individual entrepreneur cognitive characteristics contributing to social enterprise performance and recommended a framework for women's social entrepreneur development. Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted an exploratory qualitative study of 22 women founders of social enterprises using a semi-structured questionnaire. In-depth interviews were conducted, and the transcripts were analyzed using thematic content analysis. Findings This study found a significant impact of self-efficacy on the performance of social enterprises among the studied subjects. Social support in the form of material, information and emotional support enhanced the ability of women social entrepreneurs to better achieve business sustenance and continuance of operations. The business skills of the women social entrepreneurs led them to move from just social impact generators to becoming thought leaders. The strong prosocial motivation of the founders contributed to building their resilience in the face of adversity. Research limitations/implications This study extended the existing theories on social entrepreneurship by bringing the dimensions of entrepreneurial resilience in driving social enterprise performance along with business skills. Thus, it provided an enhanced explanation to the existing body of knowledge on contributors to superior social enterprise performance. Practical implications This study gathered insights into the role of entrepreneurship education focused on business skills, especially for women social entrepreneurs in achieving superior performance for their social ventures. This also reconfirmed the role of social support and how structurally this could be provided by educational systems to aspiring women social entrepreneurs. Social implications The practice of social entrepreneurship by women social entrepreneurs has been growing. Its importance in developing economies because of its ability to make grassroots changes at the lower levels of society was substantive. Women have shown more inclination toward social business with an affinity for prosocial contribution. By focusing on nurturing these social enterprises, governments as well as global agencies like the United Nations and the World Economic Forum could accelerate social change. Furthermore, support for the current women social entrepreneurs as change-makers making a difference in society could be achieved. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this research study was one of the first studies on women social entrepreneurs focusing on the factors of self-efficacy, social support and entrepreneurial resilience contributing to social enterprise performance. This study combined the social entrepreneurship intention theory with entrepreneurial resilience and business skills to understand the factors leading to successful social enterprise performance for women social entrepreneurs.

HARMONIOUS SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP: A BUSINESS INNOVATION MODEL FOR EMPOWERING INDONESIAN COMMUNITIES THROUGH RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONS

Religious organizations possessed significant potential for community empowerment through social entrepreneurship practices. Although social entrepreneurship had emerged as a strategy within religious institutions to bolster congregational and community economies, it had yet to garner adequate attention. This study aimed to identify social entrepreneurship implementations, explore challenges, and formulate a suitable social entrepreneurship model within the context of religious organizations. The research was conducted within a religious organization in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. The findings suggested that achieving harmonious social entrepreneurship in Indonesia required an inclusive, collaborative stakeholder approach and increased NGO involvement through mentoring roles in entrepreneurial activities. Through a business innovation model integrated into religious organizations, community well-being could be achieved by synergizing entrepreneurship and spiritual values.

Breaking the Mold: HRD and Social Entrepreneurship – A Recipe for Progress

Social entrepreneurship practices integrate aspects from the private, public, and non-profit sectors into a cohesive practice. This paper advocates for the integration of human resource development (HRD) research and practices into social entrepreneurship initiatives to drive progress and build effective organizations committed to positive social change and value creation. By exploring HRD insights on ethical organizational strategies, initiatives for workforce development, and their impact on employee engagement and attitudes, we contend that HRD professionals can significantly contribute to the success of social entrepreneurship.

Micro-hydro Power Plant-Based Social Entrepreneurship Practices in Rural West Java (A Case Study of Cintamekar Village, Subang Regency)

Cintamekar Village in Subang Regency, West Java, is a peripheral village. One of its characteristics is that residents, especially from the pre-prosperous group, have not been able to enjoy the flow of electricity even though the source of electricity through the PLN is available. To overcome this, on the initiative of the non-governmental organization Initiative of People's Business and Economy (IBEKA), a PLTMH was built in the area. The purpose of this research is to analyze factors affecting social entrepreneurship for community empowerment. The research uses a quantitative approach which is reinforced by qualitative data. The method chosen is the case study. The results showed that overall, the formation of cooperatives was able to build social entrepreneurship by creating social benefits (score 3.6), carrying out social innovation (score above 3), and making the economic activities of citizens more diverse (score 4). The results from the data processed using SEM-PLS show that the development of social entrepreneurship is influenced by the characteristics of technology and innovation by 0.281. The communication channel factor is more dominant in influencing the development of social entrepreneurship, which is equal to 0.487. These two factors explained that there was a change of 33.3 percent in social entrepreneurship. The social entrepreneurship practice of the PLTMH program in Cintamekar Village is built on the characteristics of technology, innovation, and communication channels. The characteristics of technology and innovation as well as communication channels are the driving force for residents to change their social entrepreneurship behavior. This means that the technological and innovation characteristics of the PLTMH development and the communication channels used, through cooperative institutions, have a good impact on the development of social entrepreneurship in Cintamekar Village, and as a whole, they are able to build social entrepreneurship in creating social innovation and economic activities.

From Art to Social Entrepreneurship Praxis: The Collaboration Dynamics of Warung Murakabi Minggir through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis

In this article, we delve into the collaboration dynamics of Warung Murakabi Minggir, a social entrepreneurship praxis of collaboration that uniquely merges art, locality, and mutual cooperation to tackle social issues. The purpose of this research is to understand how the participants make sense of their collaborative experiences in Warung Murakabi Minggir. Our study employs Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to delve into the lived experiences and viewpoints of the individuals engaged in the collaboration. This article sheds light on the critical role of collaboration within diversity in establishing sustainable social entrepreneurship practices. The findings of our study emphasize a deep comprehension of how collaborative experiences in Warung Murakabi Minggir serve as catalysts for generating positive social impact. Moreover, the research emphasizes the pivotal role of collaboration, how the dynamics of collaboration can either facilitate or impede progress of Murakabi Minggir as social entrepreneurship praxis

Social Entrepreneurship as Panacea for Sustainable Community Development

This paper examines social entrepreneurship as a way of attaining sustainable community development. It specifically examines the practice of social entrepreneurship and how the idea gained popularity in recent discourse, as well as the focus of the idea as the use of business ventures in addressing social problems, promoting economic growth and enhancing community development. The paper adopted a conceptual review method to reveal that social entrepreneurship is a hybrid approach that emerge to transform communities with deliberate thoughts of social responsibility and has the potential of addressing social, economic and environmental challenges of communities including poverty, climate change, unemployment, education, healthcare, and security among others. Sustainable development requires a sustained social entrepreneurship that presents a holistic approach to community’s growth and development. Social entrepreneurship is therefore a veritable tool for sustainable community development which every nation must aspire to promote, encourage and establish policies capable of enhancing it. ПЕРСПЕКТИВЫ РАЗВИТИЯ СОЦИАЛЬНОГО ПРЕДПРИНИМАТЕЛЬСТВА В РОССИИ

The article is devoted to the consideration of topical problems of the development of modern economic systems associated with the expansion of social entrepreneurship. The study was conducted on the example of Russia, where this activity is just beginning to emerge. Special attention is paid to the prerequisites for the expansion of social entrepreneurship practices in the country. The author's developed model of socially responsible business is also presented, and several promising options for its development are given as an example.

Social entrepreneurship: laying the foundations of a nascent paradigm

Social entrepreneurship was imperative in the economic and political spheres since the 1980s, thanks to the efforts of powerful foundations such as Ashoka or the Grameen Bank, which aroused the interest of the scientific community in this phenomenon. Since the 1990s several research works concerning social entrepreneurship were born, giving birth to several definitions, conceptions, and theoretical readings, going from economics to anthropology. Nevertheless, the researchers were not able to develop a standardized theory, so leaving the field open for various interpretations of various disciplines made social entrepreneurship a metapragmatic field. The purpose of this article is to highlight the theoretical foundations of social entrepreneurship through a comparative approach. We first tried to entrench social entrepreneurship in time, after we had characterized it by the key concepts that make up the readings of the phenomenon," said we do not claim completeness our main goal is to find conceptual models allowing researchers to decipher the practices of social entrepreneurship in its different forms of socio-economic expression in different contexts, something that was achieved by our proposal of a sketch on the four conceptual pillars of social entrepreneurship.

Social Entrepreneurship Practices in Schools: Examination of School Administrators and Teacher Experiences

The purpose of this research is to examine the practices of school administrators and teachers towards social entrepreneurship in schools. Within the scope of this general purpose, the reasons that reveal social entrepreneurship activities, how the implementation process takes place, the results of the implementations, the problems encountered in the implementations, and suggestions for supporting social entrepreneurship activities have been investigated. The study group for the research consists of 6 school administrators and 6 teachers selected by the snowball sampling method who work in different provinces of Turkey in the 2021-2022 academic year and exhibit examples of social entrepreneurship. A semi-structured interview form was used for data collection and analysis. The content analysis method was used in the analysis of the obtained data. Research findings have determined that there are individual, Professional, and environmental reasons that reveal teachers' practices towards social entrepreneurship in schools. The primary reason that drives teachers towards social entrepreneurship is environmental. It has been seen that the disadvantaged nature of the job and the high number of disadvantaged students in the school cause teachers to engage in social entrepreneurship activities in order to reduce inequality. It has been determined that in the implementation process for social entrepreneurship, the stages of recognizing the need, preparation, planning, support, and evaluation emerge, and the results of the implementation are gathered under individual, organizational, and environmental sub-themes. According to the findings, the problems that arise in the practices of teachers toward social entrepreneurship are mostly organizational. Teachers stated that organizational problems stem from the administrators they are affiliated with and the inadequacies in the National Ministry of Education legislation. It has been observed that suggestions for supporting social entrepreneurship in schools are grouped under organizational and personal sub-themes.

Holistic Blended Values: Another Social Entrepreneurship Paradigm

This study seeks to comprehend in-depth how social entrepreneurship (SE) practices from a business standpoint in Islamic boarding schools, as well as what values emerge in SE practices. The qualitative research design is descriptive exploratory, with a holistic single-case study conducted at the Sidogiri Islamic boarding school in Pasuruan, Indonesia. In-depth interviews, field observations, focused discussions, and a review of supporting documents were employed to collect data. Purposive sampling was used to select key informants, and the snowball sampling technique was used to select other informants based on key informant recommendations. After maintaining quality standards through data triangulation, observers and sources, and member checks, data analysis employs an interactive model. According to the findings, SE practices are implemented through a combination of corporate social responsibility programs, bottom-of-the-pyramid orientation, other SE activities, and spirituality. The distinction of SE development in the Islamic boarding school-based business perspective in Indonesia is this balance. The balance of the SE program, as reflected in the holistic blended value, is critical to the business's existence and sustainability. The last section goes over the implications and future research.

Shaping the entrepreneurial mindset - the cases of Social Entrepreneurship HUBs within higher education in Thailand and Myanmar

Background: The full potential of social entrepreneurship remains challenging to achieve, despite continuous efforts in various economies, including South-East Asia. Several obstacles need to be addressed, such as the scarcity of skilled employees, limited business understanding among founders, difficulties accessing funding and infrastructure, and the absence of proper social impact measurement. Higher education institutions (HEIs) often face constraints in engaging and supporting early entrepreneurial activities, exacerbating the imbalance in the social entrepreneurship landscape. This imbalance has been observed in both Thailand and Myanmar.
 Research objectives: The Erasmus+ funded project, STEPup, running from 2020 to 2023, recognized an opportunity to foster innovative social entrepreneurship practices tailored for disruptive business settings in these two countries. By applying the challenge-based learning approach through interactive case challenge proceedings involving social entrepreneurs, faculty mentors and students, the development of the entrepreneurial mindset of the latter group was studied.
 Research design and methods: To accomplish this, a multi-method research design was chosen, which involved a case-challenge experience within the framework of 6 universities, a questionnaire-based survey conducted among the student population which took part in the case-challenge experience and desk research.
 Results: The study revealed the necessity for a self-organizing and organic support system for social entrepreneurship. The objective of this paper is to present recommendations and strategic guidelines to enhance access and opportunities for existing social enterprises and social entrepreneurs seeking to establish and sustain a social enterprise ecosystem. The proposed framework leverages the support, expertise, and structure of existing higher education institutions.
 Conclusions: Higher Education Institutions can serve as excellent cases demonstrating how to design and develop resource hubs for social enterprise practitioners and engage stakeholders from all sectors to address social issues and promote awareness.

Women in Nigeria: Examining the Motivations for Engaging in Social Entrepreneurship

This paper explored the motivations for women engaging in social entrepreneurship in Nigeria. Using the theoretical lens of African feminism, the paper specifically set out to explore the extent to which three factors- gender, penchant for solving social problems and economic/financial reasons influence the desire of women to engage in social entrepreneurship in a largely patriarchal society like Africa. Existing studies adopting critical feminist perspectives have shown that across the globe, there are embedded biases and institutional constraints which could separate women from men into what is considered appropriate “entrepreneuring” for their sex category (Muntean & Ozkazanc-Pan, 2016). This implies that while it is applauded that women can get self-employed in ventures that create social good, there is the risk of creating biases that unintentionally limits the potential of women toward less-lucrative/tasking self-employment. This phenomenon raised some key questions for this paper: Do women only perform better when it comes to designing enterprises for social good? Or do the narratives show that they could lead in other forms of entrepreneurship but are not because of existing constraints? Simply put, what is the drive or motivation for engaging in social entrepreneurship? Interestingly, such a study is lacking within the African context.
 For this research, a qualitative approach was adopted. Secondary data were obtained from the Ashoka.com repository, a reputable organization and social entrepreneurship website, profiled with stories of successful women social entrepreneurs. A total of 6 research subjects were randomly selected for the study. The sample was drawn from the list of published profiles based on the year of fellowship, country and sector of operation. Data were analysed using content analysis. The findings drawn from the analysis were discussed within the purview of African feminist theory and empirical works of other social researchers. The result showed that women social entrepreneurs are majorly motivated by the desire to solve a social problem (rather than make profit), which either stems from a personal experience or those around them. This study recommends that understanding the intrinsic motivation behind their actions can help social activist and feminist organizations supporting social entrepreneurs in their work. The paper further informs interventions that foster the design of social policies and programmes for successful women social entrepreneurship practice in Africa.

The Role of Information and Communication Technology for Economic Sustainability through Social Entrepreneurship Practices in Indonesia: A Preliminary Study

ICT provides an environment that encourages the development of social entrepreneurship. Regarding its definition, social entrepreneurship is the “third way” of the two sectors running dichotomously: business entities that tend to be profitable and social institutions that are not profit-oriented. The social business carries out business activities with a social mission. Social movements were at different poles from profit-seeking efforts in the past, and digital technology enabled them to achieve them simultaneously. One of the supporting factors is its ability to reduce production, distribution, and even promotion costs. On the other hand, ICT allows social entrepreneurs to amplify their stories. There are no fundamental differences between commercial and social business activities. Both of them produce goods or services. The distinguishing elements are how they do business, the actors involved, and the eventual pursuit. If the commercial company tends to profit, social enterprise talks about social impact. Profit is a medium or tool to have a social impact on business. In the last five years, social entrepreneurship trends have maturated in Indonesia. This trend attracts researchers to take a deeper look at the sustainability aspects brought by social entrepreneurs. As preliminary research, this study explores how social entrepreneurship supports economic sustainability.

Corporate social responsibility in emerging markets: Opportunities and challenges for sustainability integration

In emerging markets, Corporate Social Responsibility and social entrepreneurship practices emerge as drivers of social inclusion and welfare. In countries with considerable demands for social and economic transformations, Corporate Social Responsibility provides a positive force for addressing society's major challenges such as the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this paper, we examine how two projects selected by the United Nations Development Programme (UNPD) orient their operations toward responsible management practices in a transition economy context and answer two questions: 1) Does Corporate Social Responsibility supporting social entrepreneurship pave the way for greater inclusion?, and, 2) How do the Corporate Social Responsibility practices help achieve the SDGs? By focusing our analysis on stakeholder theory, we highlight how context can influence the strategic management process of social inclusion choices. Both cases provide practical implications of how the insertion of responsibility thematic in core business strategy acts as an effective driver for the development of fundamentally important SDGs.

The Landscape of Social Entrepreneurship Opportunities in Georgia

After the breakdown of Soviet Communism, Georgia like other soviet republics has been transforming from administrative command economies to market economies. This transformation has caused changes in economic, social, and political domains offering new market opportunities in entrepreneurship.Yet, social entrepreneurship is still an undeveloped area. The concept aims at solving social problems and facilitates the effective implementation of Sustainable Development Goals.Through innovation and business operations social entrepreneurs contribute to the economy while addressing social issues. The paper offers a comprehensive overview of the current state of social entrepreneurship in Georgia, examines social entrepreneurship practices, analyzes the activities of social enterprises, and discusses their missions. Overall, 63 social enterprises were studied. The presented article contributes to the broad investigation of social entrepreneurship in post-soviet Georgia and paves the way for further empirical studies of the challenges and opportunities from social entrepreneurs’ perspectives.

The Essence of Social Entrepreneurship through a Georgian Lens: Social Entrepreneurs’ Perspectives

The attention to the phenomenon of social entrepreneurship has been especially enhanced during the current turbulent times, as social enterprises have a key role to play in solving social problems caused by the pandemic. Currently, social entrepreneurship is still an undeveloped area in Georgia, but it has the potential to contribute to the country’s economy and improve the social, ecological, and economic conditions of society. This paper analyses the concept in Georgia and explores social entrepreneurship from the social entrepreneurs’ perspective. A qualitative interview method was applied to collect the data for this study, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with the seventeen Georgian social entrepreneurs from May–June 2021. The research reveals the drivers of social entrepreneurs and investigates the financial sources of social enterprises. It also discusses the practice of social entrepreneurship in terms of preventing and supportive factors while adopting the concept in transition economies, particularly in Georgia. The research demonstrated an urgent need for legislation to regulate the field of social entrepreneurship and formalize it.

Building a hierarchical sustainable development transition model in qualitative information approach: Electric utility industry in Indonesia

This study contributes to the literature by evaluating the sustainable development transition using qualitative information approach in the electric utility industry and recommending practical implications for decision makers. The sustainable development transition has gained more concerns to address the social, environment, economy and technological perspectives. Still, prior studies neglect to determine the sustainable development attributes in a hierarchical model and lack of qualitative information derived from linguistic preference of experts’ judgement. To fulfill this gap, the study aims to build the hierarchical model of sustainable development transition. A combined method, including fuzzy Delphi method, fuzzy interpretive structural modeling, and best worst method, is applied. From the initial proposed attribute set, thirty-seven criteria from four perspectives are validated. The results revealed that the technology transfer, innovation and production capabilities are the top aspects of the hierarchy, while learning process and social entrepreneurship practices are at the least ranking. Resource use and waste, innovation and technology adoption, and research and development are found to be the important criteria to support decision makers in the electric utility Industry in Indonesia to expedite the transition decision making for the transition acceleration.
