In this paper, aims to develop an integrated power conversion system to compensate for the problem of energy loss due to a number of power conversion processes when installing existing solar power facilities, energy storage system(ESS), and uninterruptible power supplies(UPS), which are applied to improve energy consumption and power quality of the temperature-controlled distribution center.BR The proposed integrated power conversion system has a PV+ESS+UPS function and could supply power to a load in the event of a power failure without installing a separate UPS. In addition, the purpose is to develop the optimal capacity of an integrated power air conditioning system and a solar power generation and energy storage system for the energy independence of the constant temperature distribution center.

Co-optimization for fuel cell buses integrated with power system and air conditioning via multi-dimensional prediction of driving conditions

The unknown future driving conditions of actual fuel cell buses (FCBs) and the complex coupling between energy-consuming components make the energy management of integrated powertrain and electrical accessory systems challenging. To dress this challenge, based on the multi-dimensional prediction of driving conditions, a co-optimization integrated with power system and air conditioning system is proposed for fuel cell buses in this paper. The multi-dimensional accurate construction of future driving conditions is carried out from three perspectives: long-term velocity dynamic construction, passenger number prediction, and short-term velocity real-time prediction. On this basis, hierarchical and integrated optimization strategies are designed. The optimization objective function aims at energy consumption economy and rides comfort, incorporating the impact of fuel cell and battery degradation. The simulation experiment of co-optimization for FCBs integrated power system and air conditioning system is carried out. The simulation results show that compared to the hierarchical strategy, the integrated approach has better temperature comfort and energy-saving effect, where the average temperature is closest to the target comfort temperature of 25.55 °C, and the RMSE is 0.64 °C. The equivalent hydrogen consumption is relatively saved by 6.24 %, 7678.3 g/100 km, reaching 90.27 % of the benchmark solved by offline dynamic programming.

A comprehensive design and optimization of an offset strip-fin compact heat exchanger for energy recovery systems

• Parametric, sensitivity, and optimization of compact heat exchanger is presented. • A normalized sensitivity analysis is used to identify the critical parameters. • Geometric parameters and fluid velocity appeared as the most influential parameters. • The optimization reduced the operational cost by 78%, and the total cost by 77%. Energy recovery in conventional thermal systems like power plants, refrigeration systems, and air conditioning systems has enhanced their thermodynamic and economic performance. In this regard, compact heat exchangers are the most employed for gas to gas energy recovery because of their better thermal performance. This paper presents an economic optimization of a crossflow plate-fin heat exchanger with offset strip fins. A detailed software-based numerical code for thermal, hydraulic, economic, and exergy analysis is developed for three fin geometries. Genetic Algorithm, parametric, and normalized sensitivity analyses are used to discover the most influential parameters to optimize the total cost. The parametric study showed that with the increase of mass flow rates and plate spacing, outlet stream cost and operating cost increased due to the rise in pressure drops. Finally, the optimization reduced the operational cost by ∼78.5%, stream cost by ∼64.5%, and total cost by ∼76.8%.

A solar thermal driven ORC-VFR system employed in subtropical Mediterranean climatic building

This paper investigates the configuration of solar thermal collector driven organic Rankine cycle (ORC) utilized to power air-conditioning system of the two-story office building in Paralimni, Cyprus, through a Variable-Refrigerant-Flow (VRF) system. The reason to choose this Mediterranean climate of Paralimni, Cyprus, is due to its higher dependency on fossil fuels compared to many other countries in the EU and with a high potential of harnessing solar irradiations and demand for air-conditioning (AC) loads. This location is categorized as warm temperate zones, subtropical climates and is placed in the subcategory of Mediterranean climates with humid winters and dry summers according to climatic zone, highly demanding for air conditioning. Based on the climatic data of the study area, this system can make an effective performance. Modeling the building and estimating the AC system power consumption is carried out in the DesignBuilder. Designing the organic Rankine cycle is done with EES. A solar hot water system is designed with TRNSYS to supply the required mass flow rate of water at the desired temperature of 95 °C. In this climate, the annual surface irradiation rate is 1,793 kWh/m2 whilst the AC energy requirement of a two-story building is 7,909 kWh. The employed ORC with an internal heat exchanger is designed with a constant output rate of 3.920 kW, which delivers a total of 8,154 kWh yearly. The required heat input of the ORC is supplied by a solar hot water system, employing evacuated tube collectors. The solar system consumes a 454 kWh auxiliary heating rate per year to deliver the desired mass flow rate and outlet temperature for the ORC. As a result, the designed solar-driven ORC delivers a net of (8,154 – 454) kWh = 7,700 kWh energy each year, meaning 7,700 kWh energy saving per year, equal to 97% of VRF annual energy demand. This amount of yearly energy saving yields 2,010 USD yearly capital saving as the reward of investment in this system, and defining a 20-year project, the implementation of this solar-driven power generation system at the end of the project's lifetime would save 25,049 USD.

Solar Powered Air Conditioning System Using Rotary Honeycomb Desiccant Wheel.(Dept.M)

A solar powered air conditioning system using a liquid desiccant is proposed to overcome the latent heat part of the cooling load in the air conditioning system. A solar air heater containing a porous material is used as a heat absorber. In addition, a rotating wheel containing a honeycomb clothes saturated with Calcium Chloride solution, is utilized for the regeneration and absorption processes. Different system parameters are investigated. The effect of airflow rate and solar radiation intensity on the system regeneration and absorption abilities are studied. The obtained results show that the system is highly effective in the regeneration process. Also, the system is feasible and energy-efficient in comparison with the traditional electric dehumidification. Furthermore, the system can be used to extract a reasonable amount of water from air. An empirical equation to calculate the removed moisture as a function of air flow rate at solar noon is obtained.

Design a solar power air conditioning system for the engineering building at Mutah University

Jordan like the other non-oil countries, spend significant amount of its budget on importing foreign energy. Also, the power demand increases due to, the population growth, in addition to hosting high number of refugees, from neighboring countries, and the enhancement of the citizen life style. The objective of this study, is to define the cooling load requirement, for the engineering building, at Mutah University, in order to analyze suitable cooling system, to cater the required cooling load. Energy analysis carried out, using the climate variables tabulated data, and Cooling Load Temperature Difference (CLTD), and Cooling Load Factor (CLF). The required power, to drive the cooling system was defined. Climate data shows that the average temperature was 33.2 °C, 32 °C and 33.3 °C in 2015, 2016 and 2017, respectively. The maximum temperatures was 38 °C registered in 2015. In this study the implementation of renewable energy, was considered by analyzing the viability of using, photovoltaic system, to provide power for the cooling system. Two options, to provide power for the system analyzed, the first option is supply the power from the grid, and the second option is, to supply the required power using photovoltaic power plant. The results show that, the cooling load of the building is 560 kW, and the required electrical power, to operate the cooling system is 224 kW electrical power. In addition, the results show that, the cost of power from PV system is, 40 % less than the cost of power from grid for the first 10 years. In addition, the payback period for the designed system is 5 years.

Performance enhancement of a solar powered air conditioning system using passive techniques and SWCNT /R-407c nano refrigerant

This work presents a novel solar powered air-conditioning system that operates under UAE climate conditions. Distinct passive techniques and refrigerant-based nanofluids, termed as ‘‘Nano refrigerants’’ were investigated to enhance the system performance. Results suggest that the proposed design of using passive techniques such as: roofing reflective material, trees, double-glazed windows, and overhang, reduces the space cooling load by 31.5%. Nano refrigerants effect on the coefficient of performance (COP) resulted in improving COP by adding of 5 vol % single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) into R407c refrigerant at temperatures of 283–308 (K). The results indicate that the thermal conductivity of SWCNT/R-407c nano refrigerant increased by about 15.6% compared to the base refrigerant (R-407c) at 305 K. The usage of nano refrigerant reduces consumption of compressor work by 4%. Furthermore, SWCNT/R-407c nanorefrigerant shows the notable improvement of COP of at about 17.02% for thermal conductivity and at about 10.06% for specific heat, respectively compared to R-407c refrigerant. Finally, comparisons between the proposed design and the conventional system as well as with previous literature. Results demonstrate that the proposed system reduces the compressor work by 34% and the COP is increased by 4.59% compared to the conventional air-conditioning system.

Experimental study on the thermal performance of solar air conditioning system with MEPCM cooling storage

Solar powered air conditioning system is a hot issue in the study field of building energy conservation. An experimental platform of solar powered air conditioning with microencapsulated phase change material (MEPCM) cooling storage system was carried out to evaluate the efficiency of the solar powered air conditioning system and the coupled relation with the solar radiation intensity. The outdoor and indoor environmental test system was used to collect the performance parameter data of test room to verify the cooling energy storage effect. The solar air conditioning combined with MEPCM cold storage system which was tested in Chengdu city, China. According to the analysis result, the transient thermal efficiency would decline with the rising normalized temperature difference. The transient thermal efficiency has the same variation trend with the solar radiation. The indoor air temperature of the test room was maintained between 18°C and 22°C. MEPCM cold storage system could maintain the indoor air temperature in the stable range. The energy saving rate of the completed system could reach at 30.5%. The research result could help to improve the study of solar powered air conditioning system and its application.

Experimental Investigation of Solar Powered Air-Conditioning System in a Car

Fossil fuels are of greater importance in transport systems because when it is burnt, produces significant amounts of energy to move the vehicle along. Generally usage of the air-conditioning system in the transportation will increase the usage of the fossil fuel thereby increases pollution rate. The additional energy resources such as solar energy can be used in a vehicle to generate adequate energy to power the air-conditioning system instead of solely depending on the fossil fuel, which increases the fuel consumption rate in an engine. The solar panel allows it to absorb the sun's energy and turn it into electricity can be utilized to power the air-conditioning system in a car. Thereby the consumption of fossil fuel is lowered. Besides, this application, benefits the environment as it produces lower carbon which minimizes the effect of the greenhouse effect thereby and global warming.

Solution to Avoid Power Crisis in Telangana State by Implanting Non Convectional Energy

Air conditioning requirement, which consumes more than 30% of the state procured power from different sources, which can be save and utilize for agriculture sector and other constructive needs.</em></p><p><em> In Telangana State every commercial, administrative and elite residential block is equipped with air conditioning system where the temperature ranges between 32-43<sup>0</sup>C in summer season. Telangana State is attracting the world class business investors. This design can caters the world class needs therefore this paper explore the design and performance of solar power air-conditioning system, which is integrated with invertors, PV panels, solar charger and batteries. This design can be used in non-electrified rural arid areas to avoid the expenses of supplying electricity.</em></p><p><em> This research project begins with the cooling load calculations for the selected space ideally whose dimensions are assumed to be one tone of refrigeration (3.5kW). Considering the basic parameters of cooling the photovoltaic cells has been deduced and necessary connections are arranged. </em></p><p><em> To acquire the inlet and outlet temperatures of compressor, evaporator and condenser, data logging procedure is employed. The input power for this system as well as coefficient of performance for above said climatic conditions can be deduced. The COP varies from two to four for this system and these results are compared with the convectional system performance they both match with each other considerably.</em></p></div>

Techno-Economic Study of PV System for Household Electricity Generation in Almadinah AlMunawwarah

The aim of this work is to study the technological feasibility and economic viability of the electrification of small house lies in a farm 50km far away from Almadinah AlMunawwarah. Nowadays, solar powered air conditioning has witnessed an increased progress because air conditioning system is almost a must in every building in Saudi Arabia where the outside temperature in summer higher than 45◦ C. therefore, this paper consists of two parts: one to investigate the design and performance of solar powered air conditioning system as a case study integrated with photovoltaic (PV) system which consists of PV panels, solar charger, inverter and batteries. The second part is to study the feasibility to provide electricity for a farm lies in the remote area far 50 km from Almadinah. The first step in this project is the load calculations for the selected space including lighting, cooling and other necessary appliances. Based on the cooling load calculations for the specified room used as a case study, it was found the estimated cooling load about 1-ton refrigeration (3.52 kW), the photovoltaic (PV) system has been constructed and built with the necessary connections. Data logging system has been used to measure the temperatures at the main components in the cycle. The input powers for the system as well as the coefficient of performance (COP) for the system under Almadinah climatic conditions were measured along the day. The COP varies between 2.16 to 4.22 for the system and are in a good agreement with conventional system performance. Economically, the PV system found to be the optimal solution to provide the required load at an initial cost of 187,267 SR. The present work shows that the PV system has the potential to provide electricity for remote homes far from the grids with additional environmental benefit that otherwise not gained when using conventional fossil fuel

A Review on Solar Powered Air Conditioning System

The twenty first century is rapidly becoming the perfect energy storm, modern society is faced with volatile energy prices and growing environmental concerns as well as energy supply and security issues. One of the greatest challenges facing mankind in the twenty first century is energy. Fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum and natural gas have been the main energy resources for everything vital for human society. The burning of fossil fuels has caused and is causing damage to the environment of earth. By 2050 the demand for energy could double or even triple as the global population grows and developing countries expand their economies. This has already raised concerns over potential supply difficulties, depletion of energy resources and expediting environmental impacts like ozone layer depletion, global warming and climate change etc. The most abundant energy resource available to human society is solar energy. The utilization of solar energy is as old as human history. Among various types of renewable energy resources, solar energy is the least utilized. Air conditioning is essential for maintaining thermal comfort in indoor environments, particularly for hot and humid climates. Today, air conditioning comprising cooling and dehumidification has become a necessity in commercial and residential buildings and industrial processes. During the summer, the demand for electricity greatly increases because of the extensive use of air-conditioning systems. This is a source of major problems in the country's electricity supply and contributes to an increase of CO2 emissions causing the environmental pollution and global warming. On the other hand, vapour compression air conditioning systems have impacts on stratospheric ozone depletion because of the chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) and the hydro fluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerants. The use of solar energy to drive cooling cycles is attractive since the cooling load is roughly in phase with solar energy availability. To cool with solar thermal energy, one solution is to use an absorption chillier using water and lithium bromide solution. Solar air conditioning systems help to minimize fossil fuel energy use. Among the evolving energy efficient air conditioning technologies are liquid desiccant air conditioning (LDAC) systems, which have showed promising performance during the past decades and are believed to be a strong competitor with the widely used conventional air conditioning systems (CAC). Desiccant evaporation cooling technology is environmental friendly and can be used to condition the indoor environment of buildings. Unlike conventional air conditioning systems, the desiccant air conditioning systems can be driven by low grade heat sources such as solar energy and industrial waste heat. In this study, a focus is made on reduction in Air Conditioning capacity, fuel savings and emission reductions attainable through the use of solar energy.

German/Egyptian Demonstration Project on Solar Cooling in a Hot Arid Climate

In Egypt, like in other hot arid countries the use of conventional electrically driven chillers for air conditioning (AC) is increasing dramatically, thus leading to high costs, power grid overload and blackouts. Thermally driven refrigeration processes would offer a perfect alternative to convert solar heat radiation into cooling energy for indoor thermal comfort. The practical feasibility of a solar powered AC system was proven in a successful demonstration project of Fraunhofer UMSICHT, Germany and Assiut University, Egypt. It included the system simulation, design, setting up and operation of an integrated solar operated residential scale cooling system. The project aimed at testing, monitoring and evaluating the thermally driven cooling process under the challenging operating conditions of the upper Nile valley. The Assiut solar cooling system has been successfully operating since summer 2012, and is the first of its kind in Egypt.

Effect of Geometric and Operating Parameters on Performance of Helical Coiled Tube Heat Exchanger

Helical coil heat exchangers are popular because of compact structure with enhanced heat transfer coefficient by passive heat transfer enhancement technique. Due to these advantages helical coil tube heat exchangers are widely used in various applications like power plants, nuclear reactors, refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, heat recovery systems, chemical processing and food industries. The analysis of the helical coil heat exchanger with different operating and geometric parameters is presented in this paper. The analysis shows that both operating and geometric parameters are having influence on heat transfer characteristic. The analysis of heat transfer coefficient and Nusselt Number with respect to Reynolds number with different correlations and its signifence is discussed in this paper. The effect of geometric parameter on performance of helical coiled tube heat exchanger is also presented in this paper.
