A Modular Multilevel Converter-Shunt Active Power Filter-Based Hybrid Topology for Grid Power Quality Improvement

With the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources and active loads into the electrical power system, the limitations of traditional low-frequency power grids are becoming apparent. The solid-state transformer (SST), with its multiple conversion stages offering various power ports, is an innovative solution to these challenges. However, the high cost of the SST, due to its heavy reliance on power electronic components, makes the complete replacement of traditional grids an economically nonviable option. Therefore, this paper proposes a parallel connection of the SST to an existing traditional power grid in order to divide the transmitted power, thus reducing the investment costs. Furthermore, a hybrid topology based on modular multilevel converter (MMC) and shunt active power filter (SAPF) is proposed in this paper in order to compensate the harmonic currents caused by non-linear loads while maintaining steady energy delivery. Additionally, an artificial neural network (ANN) controller is adopted for the MMC output DC voltage control to ensure a regular DC-link voltage for both the SAPF and the DC-to-DC converter of the SST. The proposed topology is implemented and evaluated in MATLAB/Simulink software, and various simulation results are presented.

Power harvesting enhancement from PV array and power quality improvement in grid connected PV interleaved inverter using hybrid LSE-WHO approach

In this manuscript, a hybrid approach is proposed for multi-functional grid connected photovoltaic (PV) interleaved inverter using power quality(PQ) enhancement. The proposed method is the integration of Spherical Evolution Search Algorithm (LSE) and Wild Horse Optimizer (WHO), thus it is called LSE-WHO method. The key objective of the proposed method lessens the DC voltage fluctuation and enhances the PQ. At the grid side, the interleaved inverter is used and it consists of 4 legs and every leg has a power electronic switch and a diode. Because of the structure of interleaved inverter, the shoot-through effect overcomes. The system performance is improved by the utilization of interleaved inverter. The operation of proposed method is divided into 2 parts, like harmonics reduction and power harvesting. The LSE method is used to improve the maximal power of photovoltaic and the WHO method is used to lessen the harmonics distortion and eliminated the DC-link voltage fluctuation by double band hysteresis current controller (DBHCC). The switching losses are low because the DBHCC gives lesser switching frequency. Then, the LSE-WHO method is done in MATLAB, and its performance is compared to the existing methods. From the simulation, it conclude that the LSE-WHO method provides the THD as 2.12% and improves the PQ.

Power quality improvement of grid interfaced solar PV system using an improved least mean square‐based unified control technique

SummaryThis article presents an improved least mean square (LMS) algorithm‐based control approach for a three‐phase grid interfaced solar photovoltaic (GISPV) system for smart building applications. The SPV is primarily utilized to supply household loads, and the absence or intermittency of SPV is curbed by utilizing power from the grid. The majority of household loads are nonlinear loads that affect the grid power quality (PQ). However, the effects of both linear and nonlinear loads on grid PQ have been analyzed in this article. This article proposes a Gaussian Kernel function‐based normalized LMS (GKNLMS) algorithm to calculate the active peak weight component of the load current, thereby utilizing it to obtain a sinusoidal reference current. Considering a higher step size and utilizing the Gaussian Kernel function for reduced mean square error (MSE) improves both the convergence rate and accuracy of estimation in the conventional LMS. The proposed control technique effectively addresses system anomalies caused by dynamic solar irradiance, load variation, and unbalanced loading conditions. Furthermore, the system response with the GKNLMS algorithm is assessed in MATLAB/Simulink and validated by developing a laboratory setup of the system for experimentation.

Solar PV-Fed Multilevel Inverter with Series Compensator for Power Quality Improvement in Grid Connected Systems

Power quality problems arise as a result of RES integration into the grid. Voltage fluctuations, harmonic distortion, and spikes all impact customers as power quality issues on the grid. A cheap series compensator, such as the Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR), is the best approach to fix these problems. In order to enhance the grid's power quality, this research introduces a novel multilayer inverter that uses solar PV as a distributed voltage rectifier. The main objective of the proposed work is to enhance power quality through the development of a DVR that simultaneously functions as an integrated 23-level multilevel inverter. Beyond that, the boost converter has an improved INC-MPPT implementation. Despite their numerous benefits, multilayer inverters encounter reliability concerns such as reduced total harmonic distortion (THD) and fewer components. The suggested design has the potential to produce 23 distinct output voltage levels by use of asymmetrical DC sources. An inverter that is both smaller and cheaper with fewer parts is one of the advantages of the MLI. On top of that, the dq reference frame rotation adjustment is well studied mathematically. To test the DVR's flexibility with an equal load, simulation approaches are used. The simulation results of the suggested structure are generated using MATLAB/Simulink. Results from the Fuzzy Logic System show that the proposed technique improves power quality and compensates better for voltage sag.

Therefore, in this work, use solar power source-based power quality improvement in a system. The main aim of this work is multi-level inverter associated UPQC for power quality enhancement. In this work, multi-level inverters are used in a series shunt controller for producing accurate sinusoidal wave shape. The series controller is connected to the grid side for grid power quality improvement. In this work, grid side voltage sag/swell was reduced by a series controller. The advantage of the proposed system is the high-efficiency enrichment of quality power. The MATLAB/Simulink environment verifies the simulated results of the proposed system.

Feedforward-Feedback Based Adaptive Control Algorithm for Power Quality Improvement of Grid Integrated Photovoltaic System

Integration of renewable energy systems such as wind and solar energy with the regular grid via inverters has shown to be a dependable approach for delivering end customers with consistent and high-quality power. Controlling and synchronizing generated power with the grid requires integrating the control algorithm in a Grid Integrated Photovoltaic (GIPV) system. A feedforward-feedback (FFFB) based adaptive control technique for the 3-stage dual-stage GIPV system is proposed in this research. The fuzzy logic controller is employed for DC-link voltage feedback control in the proposed feedforward-feedback adaptive control algorithm, and an additional feedforward loop is introduced to improve the GIPV system's performance. The efficiency of the suggested control algorithm in managing inverter operation while maintaining power quality is demonstrated. Furthermore, the system response of providing reactive power compensation, harmonic compensation, and load balancing for varied loads is explored using MATLAB and the Simulink tools.

A novel function roach and intelligence control technique for power quality improvement in grid incorporated solar photovoltaic system

ABSTRACT Solar photovoltaic (SPV) based renewable resource-linked grid system has been replacing the traditional power generation system due to significant advantages. However, high fluctuation of DC voltage might damage the grid system and produce power quality problems in terms of total harmonic distortion (THD) and voltage fluctuation. In this article, a novel function roach infestation optimization (FRIO) based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) scheme is proposed for tracking the utmost PV power. Furthermore, a novel generalized evolving fuzzy reasoning-based intelligence control (GEFRIC) method is proposed in multilevel inverter (MLI) to mitigate the harmonic constraints in the grid system. The performance analysis of the proposed method has been validated in MATLAB/Simulink under different cases. Moreover, the outcome of the proposed scheme was compared with other conventional methods and has attained better results by achieving less THD and optimal solutions.

A XGBOOST‐MRFO control scheme for power quality improvement in grid integrated hybrid renewable energy sources using STATCOM

A hybrid control system is presented for the improvement of power quality in grid-integrated hybrid renewable energy sources (HRES) like hybrid photovoltaic-wind solar energy system using STATCOM. The proposed hybrid control system is the hybrid wrapper of both the extreme gradient boosting (XGBOOST) and Manta Ray Foraging Optimization (MRFO) and hence it is said to be as XGBOOST-MRFO control scheme. The innovation of the proposed hybrid system is the improved predictability through the participation of MRFO, reliability, adaptation for the entire parameter variations, and shorter implementation time. Depending on the minimal error objective function, MRFO improves the XGBOOST learning process. The proposed approach relies on XGBOOST-MRFO which is serving control algorithm to generate STATCOM reference signals. Here, the XGBOOST system is qualified with inputs like instantaneous previous power of the obtainable sources and the current time necessary load demand and the equivalent target reference power of the sources. Depending on the load variation, the XGBOOST-MRFO control scheme makes the gain parameters of the PI controller give the optimal control signal for the STATCOM and to direct the power of the HRES. The prediction process of the proposed system assumes the entire kinds of differences on system parameters such as DC voltage, real and reactive power. Therefore, the proposed XGBOOST-MRFO strategy gives that optimal control of STATCOM that attempts to recover the damping of the power system and direct line voltage by giving reactive power compensation. The proposed system is executed on the MATLAB platform and performance is evaluated. The performance of the proposed system is compared with existing methods.

Grid power quality improvement using a vehicle‐to‐grid enabled bidirectional off‐board electric vehicle battery charger

SummaryThis paper investigates the application of a vehicle‐to‐grid (V2G)‐enabled bidirectional off‐board electric vehicle (EV) battery charger on the grid current harmonic compensation (GCHC) and reactive power compensation (RPC) and simultaneously uses it as a battery charger and power generator. To generate reference current, the proposed EV charger control algorithm processed the nonlinear residential load current and point of common coupling (PCC) voltage, to estimate the active load current component and synchronizing voltage template, respectively. The EV charger control algorithm uses an adaptive notch filter (ANF) to generate the in‐phase and 90° shifted synchronizing voltage template from PCC voltage. Furthermore, a resonant filter is used to extract the fundamental frequency residential load current component accurately. The extracted fundamental component is sampled and hold at zero crossings of the 90° shifted synchronizing voltage template to estimate the active load current component. As a result, the proposed control algorithm ensures effective performance without depending on any phase‐locked loop (PLL). The charger performance with the proposed control algorithm is validated by the simulation results obtained using MATLAB/Simulink. Furthermore, an off‐board EV battery charger experimental prototype is built in the laboratory to verify the obtained simulation results.

Harmonic mitigation and power quality improvement in utility grid with solar energy penetration using distribution static compensator

Distribution static compensator is based on power electronic devices technology which is utilized to supply rapid changes in active power as well as reactive power of utility grids. This is useful to achieve corrections in power factor, balancing of load, compensation of current and filtering of harmonics. Therefore, proposed work investigates the improvement of the power quality by utilizing the distribution static compensator, which is equipped by battery energy storage system and interfaced to distribution network with solar photo voltaic (PV) energy integration. In the present study, distribution static compensator is controlled using a control strategy based on the synchronous reference frame theory. Customised IEEE-13 nodes test system incorporating solar PV generation and distribution static compensator, is utilized to perform the harmonic mitigation and power quality analysis. Disturbances of power quality and harmonics have been investigated due to abrupt changes in the insolation of solar radiation, outage of PV plant from grid and synchronization of PV plant to grid. MATLAB/Simulink environment is utilized to perform the study. Effectiveness of a developed approach is validated by comparing results of simulation with results extracted in real time using real time digital simulator. Results indicate that the developed method is more effective for harmonic mitigation and improving power quality of electrical power in distribution network integrated with solar PV generation. Performance of the approach is compared with the performance of methods reported in the literature to establish the suitability of the method for harmonics mitigation and power quality improvement in grid with solar energy.

The grid connected distribution systems are providing the energy to the load from the grid. In the power system, the power quality issues are occurred due to the following issues as instability of the system, voltage sag, harmonic distortion, over voltage, unbalanced voltage etc. In this paper, the power quality improvement is designed using the inverter which compensates the voltage and current when the fault occurred. This inverter is used to inject the power using a DC source. This improvement of power quality is controlled by the hysteresis controller with fuzzy logic control. The feedback is given to the controller which reduces the error from the system and provides the control variables to the inverter terms of switching gate signals.

Recursive Digital Filter Based Control for Power Quality Improvement of Grid Tied Solar PV System

This article deals with the implementation of a control approach for an active power transfer between solar photovoltaic (PV) array and the grid/ load along-with power quality (PQ) improvement by eliminating harmonics and compensating reactive power required by the load in the distribution network. The PQ problems at the point of intersection, are increasing preeminently with respect to voltage and current harmonics due to integration of renewable sources. The recursive digital filter control implemented here for PV grid interfaced system is efficient in improving PQ indices by operating round the clock and ensuring power transfer between utility grid and connected loads. The prominence of the control algorithm lies in the efficient switching of voltage source converter (VSC), by generating reference grid currents, which are obtained through indirect current control technique. The recursive digital filter is utilized for processing the load currents and extracting the active power component of them. These active power components of load currents are used for generating the reference grid currents in this system. A prototype of the system is developed in the laboratory and its performance is studied for varying loads, changing solar insolation, and voltage swell, voltage sag and voltage distortion conditions.
