Probing the filamentary nature of star formation in the California giant molecular cloud

Context. Recent studies suggest that filamentary structures are representative of the initial conditions of star formation in molecular clouds and support a filament paradigm for star formation, potentially accounting for the origin of the stellar initial mass function (IMF). The detailed, local physical properties of molecular filaments remain poorly characterized, however. Aims. Using Herschel imaging observations of the California giant molecular cloud, we aim to further investigate the filament paradigm for low- to intermediate-mass star formation and to better understand the exact role of filaments in the origin of stellar masses. Methods. Using the multiscale, multiwavelength extraction method getsf, we identify starless cores, protostars, and filaments in the Herschel data set and separate these components from the background cloud contribution to determine accurate core and filament properties. Results. We find that filamentary structures contribute approximately 20% of the overall mass of the California cloud, while compact sources such as dense cores contribute a mere 2% of the total mass. Considering only dense gas (defined as gas with AV,bg > 4.5–7), filaments and cores contribute ~66–73% and 10–14% of the dense gas mass, respectively. The transverse half-power diameter measured for California molecular filaments has a median undeconvolved value of 0.18 pc, consistent within a factor of 2 with the typical ~0.1 pc width of nearby filaments from the Herschel Gould Belt survey. A vast majority of identified prestellar cores (~82–90%) are located within ~0.1 pc of the spines of supercritical filamentary structures. Both the prestellar core mass function (CMF) and the distribution of filament masses per unit length or filament line mass function (FLMF) are consistent with power-law distributions at the high-mass end, ΔN/ΔlogM ∝ M−1.4±0.2 at M > 1 M⊙ for the CMF and ΔN/Δlog Mline ∝ Mline−1.5±0.2 for the FLMF at Mline > 10 M⊙ pc−1, which are both consistent with the Salpeter power-law IMF. Based on these results, we propose a revised model for the origin of the CMF in filaments, whereby the global prestellar CMF in a molecular cloud arises from the integration of the CMFs generated by individual thermally supercritical filaments within the cloud. Conclusions. Our findings support the existence a tight connection between the FLMF and the CMF/IMF and suggests that filamentary structures represent a critical evolutionary step in establishing a Salpeter-like mass function.

Faint Stars in a Faint Galaxy. II. The Low-mass Stellar Initial Mass Function of the Boötes I Ultrafaint Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

This paper presents improved constraints on the low-mass stellar initial mass function (IMF) of the Boötes I (Boo I) ultrafaint dwarf galaxy, based on our analysis of recent deep imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope. The identification of candidate stellar members of Boo I in the photometric catalog produced from these data was achieved using a Bayesian approach, informed by complementary archival imaging data for the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. Additionally, the existence of earlier-epoch data for the fields in Boo I allowed us to derive proper motions for a subset of the sources and thus identify and remove likely Milky Way stars. We were also able to determine the absolute proper motion of Boo I, and our result is in agreement with, but completely independent of, the measurement(s) by Gaia. The best-fitting parameter values of three different forms of the low-mass IMF were then obtained through forward modeling of the color–magnitude data for likely Boo I member stars within an approximate Bayesian computation Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm. The best-fitting single power-law IMF slope is , while the best-fitting broken power-law slopes are and . The best-fitting lognormal characteristic mass and width parameters are and . These broken power-law and lognormal IMF parameters for Boo I are consistent with published results for the stars within the Milky Way, and thus it is plausible that Boötes I and the Milky Way are populated by the same stellar IMF.

Towards a fully consistent Milky Way disk model

Aims.We present an updated version of the semi-analytic Just-Jahrei (JJ) model of the Galactic disk and constrain its parameters in the Solar neighbourhood.Methods.The new features of the JJ model include a simple two-component gaseous disk, a star-formation rate (SFR) function of the thick disk that has been extended in time, and a correlation between the kinematics of molecular gas and thin-disk populations. Here, we study the vertical number density profiles andW-velocity distributions determined from ∼2 × 106local stars of the secondGaiadata release (DR2). We also investigate an apparent Hess diagram of theGaiaDR2 stars selected in a conic volume towards the Galactic poles. Using a stellar evolution library, we synthesise stellar populations with a four-slope broken power-law initial mass function, the SFR, and an age-metallicity relation. The latter is consistently derived with the observed metallicity distribution of the local Red Clump giants from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). Working within a Bayesian approach, we sample the posterior probability distribution in a multidimensional parameter space using the Markov chain Monte Carlo method.Results.We find that the spatial distribution and motion of theGaiaDR2 stars imply two recent SF bursts centered at ages of ∼0.5 Gyr and ∼3 Gyr and characterised by a ∼30% and ∼55% SF enhancement, respectively, relative to a monotonously declining SFR continuum. The stellar populations associated with this SF excess are found to be dynamically hot for their age: they haveW-velocity dispersions of ∼12.5 km s−1and ∼26 km s−1. The new JJ model is able to reproduce the local star counts with an accuracy of ∼5%.Conclusions.UsingGaiaDR2 data, we self-consistently constrained 22 parameters of the updated JJ model. Our optimised model predicts two SF bursts within the last ∼4 Gyr, which may point to recent episodes of gas infall.

The role of molecular filaments in the origin of the prestellar core mass function and stellar initial mass function

Context. The origin of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) is one of the most debated issues in astrophysics. Aims. Here we explore the possible link between the quasi-universal filamentary structure of star-forming molecular clouds and the origin of the IMF. Methods. Based on our recent comprehensive study of filament properties from Herschel Gould Belt survey observations, we derive, for the first time, a good estimate of the filament mass function (FMF) and filament line mass function (FLMF) in nearby molecular clouds. We use the observed FLMF to propose a simple toy model for the origin of the prestellar core mass function (CMF), relying on gravitational fragmentation of thermally supercritical but virialized filaments. Results. We find that the FMF and the FLMF have very similar shapes and are both consistent with a Salpeter-like power-law function (dN/dlog Mline ∝ Mline−1.5±0.1) in the regime of thermally supercritical filaments (Mline > 16 M⊙ pc−1). This is a remarkable result since, in contrast, the mass distribution of molecular clouds and clumps is known to be significantly shallower than the Salpeter power-law IMF, with dN/dlog Mcl ∝ Mcl−0.7. Conclusions. Since the vast majority of prestellar cores appear to form in thermally transcritical or supercritical filaments, we suggest that the prestellar CMF and by extension the stellar IMF are at least partly inherited from the FLMF through gravitational fragmentation of individual filaments.

Initial mass function variations cannot explain the ionizing spectrum of low metallicity starbursts

Aims. Observations of both galaxies in the distant Universe and local starbursts are showing increasing evidence for very hard ionizing spectra that stellar population synthesis models struggle to reproduce. Here we explore the effects of the assumed stellar initial mass function (IMF) on the ionizing photon output of young populations at wavelengths below key ionization energy thresholds. Methods. We use a custom set of binary population and spectral synthesis (BPASS) models to explore the effects of IMF assumptions as a function of metallicity, IMF slope, upper mass limit, IMF power law break mass and sampling. Results. We find that while the flux capable of ionizing hydrogen is only weakly dependent on IMF parameters, the photon flux responsible for the He II and O VI lines is far more sensitive to assumptions. In our current models this flux arises primarily from helium and Wolf-Rayet stars which have partially or fully lost their hydrogen envelopes. The timescales for formation and evolution of both Wolf Rayet stars and helium dwarfs, and hence inferred population age, are affected by choice of model IMF. Even the most extreme IMFs cannot reproduce the He II ionizing flux observed in some high redshift galaxies, suggesting a source other than stellar photospheres. Conclusions. We caution that detailed interpretation of features in an individual galaxy spectrum is inevitably going to be subject to uncertainties in the IMF of its contributing starbursts. We remind the community that the IMF is fundamentally a statistical construct, and that stellar population synthesis models are most effective when considering entire galaxy populations rather than individual objects.

Multiple star systems in the Orion nebula

This work presents an interferometric study of the massive-binary fraction in the Orion Trapezium cluster with the recently comissioned GRAVITY instrument. We observed a total of 16 stars of mainly OB spectral type. We find three previously unknown companions for θ1 Ori B, θ2 Ori B, and θ2 Ori C. We determined a separation for the previously suspected companion of NU Ori. We confirm four companions for θ1 Ori A, θ1 Ori C, θ1 Ori D, and θ2 Ori A, all with substantially improved astrometry and photometric mass estimates. We refined the orbit of the eccentric high-mass binary θ1 Ori C and we are able to derive a new orbit for θ1 Ori D. We find a system mass of 21.7 M⊙ and a period of 53 days. Together with other previously detected companions seen in spectroscopy or direct imaging, eleven of the 16 high-mass stars are multiple systems. We obtain a total number of 22 companions with separations up to 600 AU. The companion fraction of the early B and O stars in our sample is about two, significantly higher than in earlier studies of mostly OB associations. The separation distribution hints toward a bimodality. Such a bimodality has been previously found in A stars, but rarely in OB binaries, which up to this point have been assumed to be mostly compact with a tail of wider companions. We also do not find a substantial population of equal-mass binaries. The observed distribution of mass ratios declines steeply with mass, and like the direct star counts, indicates that our companions follow a standard power law initial mass function. Again, this is in contrast to earlier findings of flat mass ratio distributions in OB associations. We excluded collision as a dominant formation mechanism but find no clear preference for core accretion or competitive accretion.

Local disc model in view of Gaia DR1 and RAVE data

Aims. We test the performance of the semi-analytic self-consistent Just-Jahreiß disc model (JJ model) with the astrometric data from the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) sub-catalogue of the first Gaia data release (Gaia DR1), as well as the radial velocities from the fifth data release of the Radial Velocity Experiment survey (RAVE DR5). Methods. We used a sample of 19 746 thin-disc stars from the TGAS×RAVE cross-match selected in a local solar cylinder of 300 pc radius and 1 kpc height below the Galactic plane. Based on the JJ model, we simulated this sample via the forward modelling technique. First, we converted the predicted vertical density laws of the thin-disc populations into a mock sample. For this we used the Modules and Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA) Isochrones and Stellar Tracks (MIST), a star formation rate (SFR) that decreased after a peak at 10 Gyr ago, and a three-slope broken power-law initial mass function (IMF). Then the obtained mock populations were reddened with a 3D dust map and were subjected to the selection criteria corresponding to the RAVE and TGAS observational limitations as well as to additional cuts applied to the data sample. We calculated the quantities of interest separately at different heights above the Galactic plane, taking the distance error effects in horizontal and vertical directions into account separately. Results. The simulated vertical number density profile agrees well with the data. An underestimation of the stellar numbers begins at ∼800 pc from the Galactic plane, which is expected as the possible influence of populations from |z| > 1 kpc is ignored during the modelling. The lower main sequence (LMS) is found to be thinner and under-populated by 3.6% relative to the observations. The corresponding deficits for the upper main sequence (UMS) and red giant branch (RGB) are 6% and 34.7%, respectively. However, the intrinsic uncertainty related to the choice of stellar isochrones is ∼10% in the total stellar number. The vertical velocity distribution function f(|W|) simulated for the whole cylinder agrees to within 1σ with the data. This marginal agreement arises because the dynamically cold populations at heights < 200 pc from the Galactic plane are underestimated. We also find that the model gives a fully realistic representation of the vertical gradient in stellar populations when studying the Hess diagrams for different horizontal slices. We also checked and confirm the consistency of our results with the newly available second Gaia data release (DR2). Conclusions. Based on these results and considering the uncertainties in the data selection as well as the sensitivity of the simulations to the sample selection function, we conclude that the fiducial JJ model confidently reproduces the vertical trends in the thin-disc stellar population properties. Thus, it can serve as a starting point for the future extension of the JJ model to other Galactocentric distances.

Mean proper motions, space orbits, and velocity dispersion profiles of Galactic globular clusters derived fromGaiaDR2 data

We have derived the mean proper motions and space velocities of 154 Galactic globular clusters and the velocity dispersion profiles of 141 globular clusters based on a combination of Gaia DR2 proper motions with ground-based line-of-sight velocities. Combining the velocity dispersion profiles derived here with new measurements of the internal mass functions allows us to model the internal kinematics of 144 clusters, more than 90% of the currently known Galactic globular cluster population. We also derive the initial cluster masses by calculating the cluster orbits backwards in time applying suitable recipes to account for mass loss and dynamical friction. We find a correlation between the stellar mass function of a globular cluster and the amount of mass lost from the cluster, pointing to dynamical evolution as one of the mechanisms shaping the mass function of stars in clusters. The mass functions also show strong evidence that globular clusters started with a bottom-light initial mass function. Our simulations show that the currently surviving globular cluster population has lost about 80% of its mass since the time of formation. If globular clusters started from a log-normal mass function, we estimate that the Milky Way contained about 500 globular clusters initially, with a combined mass of about $2.5 \cdot 10^8$ $M_\odot$. For a power-law initial mass function, the initial mass in globular clusters could have been a factor of three higher.

KINETyS II: Constraints on spatial variations of the stellar initial mass function from K-band spectroscopy

We investigate the spatially resolved stellar populations of a sample of seven nearby massive Early-type galaxies (ETGs), using optical and near infrared data, including K-band spectroscopy. This data offers good prospects for mitigating the uncertainties inherent in stellar population modelling by making a wide variety of strong spectroscopic features available. We report new VLT-KMOS measurements of the average empirical radial gradients out to the effective radius in the strengths of the Ca I 1.98$\mu$m and 2.26$\mu$m features, the Na I 2.21$\mu$m line, and the CO 2.30$\mu$m bandhead. Following previous work, which has indicated an excess of dwarf stars in the cores of massive ETGs, we pay specific attention to radial variations in the stellar initial mass function (IMF) as well as modelling the chemical abundance patterns and stellar population ages in our sample. Using state-of-the-art stellar population models we infer an [Fe/H] gradient of -0.16$\pm$0.05 per dex in fractional radius and an average [Na/Fe] gradient of -0.35$\pm$0.09. We find a large but radially-constant enhancement to [Mg/Fe] of $\sim$ 0.4 and a much lower [Ca/Fe] enhancement of $\sim$ 0.1. Finally, we find no significant IMF radial gradient in our sample on average and find that most galaxies in our sample are consistent with having a Milky Way-like IMF, or at most a modestly bottom heavy IMF (e.g. less dwarf enriched than a single power law IMF with the Salpeter slope).

Testing the Universality of the Stellar IMF with Chandra and HST

Abstract The stellar initial mass function (IMF), which is often assumed to be universal across unresolved stellar populations, has recently been suggested to be “bottom-heavy” for massive ellipticals. In these galaxies, the prevalence of gravity-sensitive absorption lines (e.g., Na i and Ca ii) in their near-IR spectra implies an excess of low-mass ( ) stars over that expected from a canonical IMF observed in low-mass ellipticals. A direct extrapolation of such a bottom-heavy IMF to high stellar masses ( ) would lead to a corresponding deficit of neutron stars and black holes, and therefore of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), per unit near-IR luminosity in these galaxies. Peacock et al. searched for evidence of this trend and found that the observed number of LMXBs per unit K-band luminosity ( ) was nearly constant. We extend this work using new and archival Chandra X-ray Observatory and Hubble Space Telescope observations of seven low-mass ellipticals where is expected to be the largest and compare these data with a variety of IMF models to test which are consistent with the observed . We reproduce the result of Peacock et al., strengthening the constraint that the slope of the IMF at must be consistent with a Kroupa-like IMF. We construct an IMF model that is a linear combination of a Milky Way-like IMF and a broken power-law IMF, with a steep slope ( ) for stars <0.5 (as suggested by near-IR indices), and that flattens out ( ) for stars >0.5 , and discuss its wider ramifications and limitations.

The gravitational-wave signal generated by a galactic population of double neutron-star binaries

We investigate the gravitational wave (GW) signal generated by a population of double neutron-star binaries (DNS) with eccentric orbits caused by kicks during supernova collapse and binary evolution. The DNS population of a standard Milky-Way type galaxy has been studied as a function of star formation history, initial mass function (IMF) and metallicity and of the binary-star common-envelope ejection process. The model provides birth rates, merger rates and total numbers of DNS as a function of time. The GW signal produced by this population has been computed and expressed in terms of a hypothetical space GW detector (eLISA) by calculating the number of discrete GW signals at different confidence levels, where `signal' refers to detectable GW strain in a given frequency-resolution element. In terms of the parameter space explored, the number of DNS-originating GW signals is greatest in regions of recent star formation, and is significantly increased if metallicity is reduced from 0.02 to 0.001, consistent with Belczynski10a. Increasing the IMF power-law index (from --2.5 to --1.5) increases the number of GW signals by a large factor. This number is also much higher for models where the common-envelope ejection is treated using the $\alpha-$mechanism (energy conservation) than when using the $\gamma-$mechanism (angular-momentum conservation). We have estimated the total number of detectable DNS GW signals from the Galaxy by combining contributions from thin disc, thick disc, bulge and halo. The most probable numbers for an eLISA-type experiment are 0-1600 signals per year at S/N$\geqslant$1, 0-900 signals per year at S/N$\geqslant$3, and 0-570 at S/N$\geqslant$5, coming from about 0-65, 0-60 and 0-50 resolved DNS respectively.

Reconstructing the initial mass function of disc–bulge Galactic globular clusters from N-body simulations

We propose an evolutionary model to describe the dynamical evolution of star cluster systems in tidal fields, in which we calibrated the parametric equations defining the model by running direct N-body simulations of star clusters with a wide range of initial masses and set of orbital parameters, living within the external tidal field generated by a disc-like galaxy. We derived a new method to solve numerically the evolutionary equations, allowing us to infer constraints on the mass of a star cluster from its age, present-day mass, orbital parameters and external gravitational potential. The result has been applied to the metal-rich subsample of Galactic globular clusters, being a good representation of a disc-bulge population. We reconstructed the initial mass function of these objects from the present-day mass function, finding that a lognormal distribution is well preserved during the evolution of the globular cluster system. The evolution of a power-law initial mass function has been evaluated, confirming that it transforms into a lognormal distribution of the cluster masses within an Hubble time. Our results are consistent with a formation scenario in which metal-rich Galactic globular clusters formed from giant molecular clouds in high-pressure regions during the early phases of the evolution of the Galactic disc and bulge.

On the Mass Distribution of Stellar-Mass Black Holes

Abstract The observational stellar-mass black hole mass distribution exhibits a maximum at about 8 M ⊙. It can be explained via the details of the massive star evolution, supernova explosions, or consequent black hole evolution. We propose another explanation, connected with an underestimated influence of the relation between the initial stellar mass and the compact remnant mass. We show that an unimodal observational mass distribution of black holes can be produced by a power-law initial mass function and a monotonic “remnant mass versus initial mass” relation.

EVIDENCE FOR A CONSTANT INITIAL MASS FUNCTION IN EARLY-TYPE GALAXIES BASED ON THEIR X-RAY BINARY POPULATIONS,

A number of recent studies have proposed that the stellar initial mass function (IMF) of early type galaxies varies systematically as a function of galaxy mass, with higher mass galaxies having bottom heavy IMFs. These bottom heavy IMFs have more low-mass stars relative to the number of high mass stars, and therefore naturally result in proportionally fewer neutron stars and black holes. In this paper, we specifically predict the variation in the number of black holes and neutron stars based on the power-law IMF variation required to reproduce the observed mass-to-light ratio trends with galaxy mass. We then test whether such variations are observed by studying the field low-mass X-ray binary populations (LMXBs) of nearby early-type galaxies. In these binaries, a neutron star or black hole accretes matter from a low-mass donor star. Their number is therefore expected to scale with the number of black holes and neutron stars present in a galaxy. We find that the number of LMXBs per K-band light is similar among the galaxies in our sample. These data therefore demonstrate the uniformity of the slope of the IMF from massive stars down to those now dominating the K-band light, and are consistent with an invariant IMF. Our results are inconsistent with an IMF which varies from a Kroupa/Chabrier like IMF for low mass galaxies to a steep power-law IMF (with slope $x$=2.8) for high mass galaxies. We discuss how these observations constrain the possible forms of the IMF variations and how future Chandra observations can enable sharper tests of the IMF.

SIMULATING STAR CLUSTERS WITH THE AMUSE SOFTWARE FRAMEWORK. I. DEPENDENCE OF CLUSTER LIFETIMES ON MODEL ASSUMPTIONS AND CLUSTER DISSOLUTION MODES

We perform a series of simulations of evolving star clusters using AMUSE (the Astrophysical Multipurpose Software Environment), a new community-based multi-physics simulation package, and compare our results to existing work. These simulations model a star cluster beginning with a King model distribution and a selection of power-law initial mass functions, and contain a tidal cut-off. They are evolved using collisional stellar dynamics and include mass loss due to stellar evolution. After determining that the differences between AMUSE results and prior publications are understood, we explored the variation in cluster lifetimes due to the random realization noise introduced by transforming a King model to specific initial conditions. This random realization noise can affect the lifetime of a simulated star cluster by up to 30%. Two modes of star cluster dissolution were identified: a mass evolution curve that contains a run-away cluster dissolution with a sudden loss of mass, and a dissolution mode that does not contain this feature. We refer to these dissolution modes as "dynamical" and "relaxation" dominated respectively. For Salpeter-like initial mass functions, we determined the boundary between these two modes in terms of the dynamical and relaxation time scales.

A low-mass cut-off near the hydrogen burning limit for Salpeter-like initial mass functions in early-type galaxies

We conduct a detailed investigation of the properties of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) in two massive early-type lens galaxies with velocity dispersions of sigma ~245 km/s and sigma ~325 km/s, for which both HST imaging and X-Shooter spectra are available. We compare the inferences obtained from two fully independent methods: (i) a combined gravitational lensing and stellar dynamics (L&D) analysis of the data sets employing self-consistent axisymmetric models, and (ii) a spectroscopic simple stellar population (SSP) analysis of optical line-strength indices, assuming single power-law IMFs. The results from the two approaches are found to be in agreement within the 1-sigma uncertainties. Both galaxies are consistent with having a Salpeter IMF (power-law slope of x = 2.35), which is strongly favoured over a Chabrier IMF (x = 1.8), with probabilities inferred from the joint analysis of 89% and 99%, respectively. Bottom-heavy IMFs significantly steeper than Salpeter (x >= 3.0) are ruled out with decisive evidence (Bayes factor B > 1000) for both galaxies, as they exceed the total mass derived from the L&D constraints. Our analysis allows, for the first time, the inference of the low-mass cut-off of the IMF (M_low). Combining the joint L&D and SSP analyses of both galaxies, we infer an IMF slope of x = 2.22 +/- 0.14, consistent with Salpeter IMF, and a low-mass limit M_low = 0.13 +/- 0.03 M_sun, just above the hydrogen burning limit.

The impact of a non-universal Initial Mass Function on the star formation histories of early-type galaxies

Recent results on the non-universality of the Initial Mass Function (IMF) have shown strong evidence of IMF variations with galaxy velocity dispersion, with a corresponding impact on other stellar population parameters, line indices and colours. Using a set of stellar population models with varying IMF slopes, we provide additional caveats on the assumption of a universal IMF. The present study shows that the derived star formation histories of early-type galaxies vary significantly with the IMF slope. For instance, a steepening in the slope of a single power-law IMF decreases substantially, by a factor of up to four, the contribution of the old stellar populations to the total light/mass. This trend is milder for a segmented-like IMF shape, where the contribution of the very low mass stars is decreased. It is also shown that, by tuning each IMF slope to its prescribed value according to each galaxy velocity dispersion, a sample of early-type galaxies covering a range of masses yield comparable star formation histories. On the one hand, a small contribution from relatively young stellar populations appear in the star formation histories of most massive elliptical galaxies when adopting a steep IMF. On the other hand, we find that low mass early-type galaxies that look like genuinely young objects with a standard IMF (i.e. ``baby elliptical galaxies``), turn out to be older when a slightly flatter IMF is employed. In summary, the use of a non-universal IMF, tuned according to the velocity dispersion of the galaxy, seems to provide more consistent results.

EVOLUTION OF THE HIGH-MASS END OF THE STELLAR INITIAL MASS FUNCTIONS IN STARBURST GALAXIES

We investigate the time evolution and spatial variation of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) in star-forming disk galaxies by using chemodynamical simulations with an IMF model depending both on local densities and metallicities ([Fe/H]) of the interstellar medium (ISM). We find that the slope (alpha) of a power-law IMF (N(m) ~ m^-alpha) for stellar masses larger than 1M_sun evolves from the canonical Salpeter IMF (alpha ~ 2.35) to be moderately top-heavy one (alpha ~ 1.9) in the simulated disk galaxies with starbursts triggered by galaxy interaction. We also find that alpha in star-forming regions correlates with star formation rate densities (Sigma_SFR in units of M_sun yr^{-1} kpc^{-2}). Feedback effects of Type Ia and II supernovae are found to prevent IMFs from being too top-heavy (alpha < 1.5). The simulation predicts alpha ~ 0.23 log Sigma_SFR + 1.7 for log Sigma_SFR > -2 (i.e., more top-heavy in higher Sigma_SFR), which is reasonably consistent well with corresponding recent observational results. The present study also predicts that inner regions of starburst disk galaxies have smaller alpha thus are more top-heavy (d alpha/d R ~ 0.07 kpc^{-1} for R < 5 kpc). The predicted radial alpha gradient can be tested against future observational studies of the alpha variation in star-forming galaxies.

Gravothermal oscillations in multicomponent models of star clusters

In this paper, gravothermal oscillations are investigated in multicomponent star clusters which have power-law initial mass functions (IMFs). For the power-law IMFs, the minimum masses (mmin) were fixed and three different maximum stellar masses (mmax) were used along with different power-law exponents (α) ranging from 0 to −2.35 (Salpeter). The critical number of stars at which gravothermal oscillations first appear with increasing N was found using the multicomponent gas code spedi. The total mass (Mtot) is seen to give an approximate stability condition for power-law IMFs with fixed values of mmax and mmin independent of α. The value Mtot/mmax ≃ 12 000 is shown to give an approximate stability condition which is also independent of mmax, though the critical value is somewhat higher for the steepest IMF that was studied. For appropriately chosen cases, direct N-body runs were carried out in order to check the results obtained from spedi. Finally, evidence of the gravothermal nature of the oscillations found in the N-body runs is presented.

On turbulent fragmentation and the origin of the stellar IMF

Two varieties of the universal stellar initial mass function (IMF) viz., the Kroupa and the Chabrier IMF, have emerged over the last decade to explain the observed distribution of stellar masses. The possibility of the universal nature of the stellar IMF leads us to the interesting prospect of a universal mode of star-formation. It is well-known that turbulent fragmentation of gas in the interstellar medium produces a lognormal distribution of density which is further reflected by the mass-function for clumps at low and intermediate masses. Stars condense out of unstable clumps through a complex interplay between a number of dynamic processes which must be accounted for when tracing the origin of the stellar IMF. In the present work, applying the theory of gravitational fragmentation we first derive the mass function (MF) for clumps. Then a core mass function (CMF) is derived by allowing the clumps to fragment, having subjected each one to a random choice of gas temperature. Finally, the stellar IMF is derived by applying a random core-to-star conversion efficiency, ϵ, in the range of 5–15% to each CMF. We obtain a power-law IMF that has exponents within the error-bars on the Kropua IMF. This derived IMF is preceded by a similar core mass function which suggests, gravoturbulent fragmentation plays a key role in assembling necessary conditions that relate the two mass-functions. In this sense the star-formation process, at least at low redshifts where gas cooling is efficient, is likely to be universal. We argue that the observed knee in the CMF and the stellar IMF may alternatively be interpreted in terms of the characteristic temperature at which gas in potential star-forming clouds is likely to be found. Our results also show that turbulence in star-forming clouds is probably driven on large spatial scales with a power-spectrum steeper than Kolmogorov-type.
