Source identification and driving factor apportionment for soil potentially toxic elements via combining APCS-MLR, UNMIX, PMF and GDM

The contamination and quantification of soil potentially toxic elements (PTEs) contamination sources and the determination of driving factors are the premise of soil contamination control. In our study, 788 soil samples from the National Agricultural Park in Chengdu, Sichuan Province were used to evaluate the contamination degree of soil PTEs by pollution factors and pollution load index. The source identification of soil PTEs was performed using positive matrix decomposition (PMF), edge analysis (UNMIX) and absolute principal component score-multiple line regression (APCS-MLR). The geo-detector method (GDM) was used to analysis drivers of soil PTEs pollution sources to help interpret pollution sources derived from receptor models. Result shows that soil Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cd, As and Hg average content were 35.2, 32.3, 108.9, 91.9, 37.1, 0.22, 9.76 and 0.15 mg/kg in this study area. Except for As, all are higher than the corresponding soil background values in Sichuan Province. The best performance of APCS-MLR was determined by comparison, and APCS-MLR was considered as the preferred receptor model for soil PTEs source distribution in the study area. ACPS-MLR results showed that 82.70% of Cu, 61.6% of Pb, 75.3% of Zn, 91.9% of Cr and 89.4% of Ni came from traffic-industrial emission sources, 60.9% of Hg came from domestic-transportation emission sources, 57.7% of Cd came from agricultural sources, and 89.5% of As came from natural sources. The GDM results showed that distance from first grade highway, population, land utilization and total potassium (TK) content were the main driving factors affecting these four sources, with q values of 0.064, 0.048, 0.069 and 0.058, respectively. The results can provide reference for reducing PTEs contamination in farmland soil.

Assessing soil contamination by potentially toxic elements in artisanal and small-scale gold mining sites of the Adamawa Region, Cameroon

Gold mining is acknowledged as a principal source of environmental contamination, primarily due to the release of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) through tailings dispersion into adjacent soils. Such contamination leads to land degradation, pollution, biodiversity loss, and soil contamination, and subsequently impacts the food chain, human health, and soil ecosystems. This study evaluates the extent of PTE contamination in soils at artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sites within the Meiganga area of the Adamawa-Yade Domain, Cameroon. ASGM extraction processes from quartz veins in this area involve the removal of topsoil to access the ore. Comparative analysis of soil samples from three profiles within the mining zone were conducted to determine contamination levels using pollution indices: enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index, contamination factor and pollution load index. Results indicate higher concentrations of PTEs in soils from the mining area compared to the control profile, with notable contamination in the bottom slope profiles and B horizons, reflecting considerable metal accumulation. The contamination levels of PTEs substantially exceed background levels in the upper continental crust. The study attributes the elevated concentrations of PTEs not only to local mineralization but also to anthropic activities, particularly ASGM, which contributes to their enrichment, distribution, and mobility. This pronounced contamination necessitates immediate intervention, advocating for pollution control measures to address potential ecosystem and human health risks. It highlights the environmental toll of ASGM and underscores the imperative for sustainable mining practices and effective soil remediation techniques, including phytoremediation and soil replacement, to alleviate the adverse effects. Assessment of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk of exposure to potentially toxic elements in tea infusions: Determination by ICP-OES and multivariate statistical data analysis

BackgroundThe perennial evergreen tea (Camellia sinensis) plant is one of the most popular nonalcoholic drinks in the world. Fertilizers and industrial, agricultural, and municipal activities are the usual drivers of soil contamination, contaminating tea plants with potentially toxic elements (PTEs). These elements might potentially accumulate to larger amounts in the leaves of plants after being taken up from the soil. Thus, frequent monitoring of these elements is critically important. MethodsThe present study intended to determine PTEs (Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) in both tea leaves and infusions using ICP-OES. Various multivariate data analysis methods such as principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) were employed to elucidate the potential sources of PTEs contamination, whether from anthropogenic activities or natural origins. Additionally, Pearson's correlation coefficient (PCC) was calculated to assess the relationships between the variables under study. ResultsThe mean contents (mg/L) of all studied elements in tea infusions decreased in order Mn (150.59 ± 1.66) > Fe (11.39 ± 0.99) > Zn (6.62 ± 0.89) > Cu (5.86 ± 0.62) > Co (3.25 ± 0.64) > Ni (1.69 ± 0.23) > Pb (1.08 ± 0.16) > Cr (0.57 ± 0.09) > Cd (0.46 ± 0.09) > Al (0.05 ± 0.008), indicating that Mn exhibits the highest abundance. The mean concentration trend in tea leaf samples mirrored that of infusions, albeit with higher concentrations of PTEs in the former. The tolerable dietary intake (TDI) value for Ni and provisional tolerable monthly intake (PTMI) value for Cd surpassed the standards set by the WHO and EFSA. Calculated hazard index (HI < 1) and cumulative cancer risk (CCR) values suggest negligible exposure risk. ConclusionElevated levels of PTEs in commonly consumed tea products concern the public and regulatory agencies.

Impacts of solid waste management site on some toxic elements contamination of the surrounding soil in Akure, Nigeria

The distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) such as zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr), their potential bioavailability, extent of contamination and potential risk of dumpsite and surrounding soil samples were appraised. Three (3) soil samples were collected randomly from within the dumpsite and three (3) soil samples were also obtained 50 m away from the perimeter fence of the dumpsite. PTEs in the bulk and fractionated portions were determined using inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The results showed that the concentrations of all the PTEs analysed were higher in the dumpsite soil samples than the surrounding samples, suggesting an impact of the dumpsite activities on the soil. The distribution of PTEs varied significantly within the different fractions of both the surrounding and dumpsite soils and their presence were more of anthropogenic than geogenic. The calculated contamination factor/pollution load index (CF/PLI) revealed that the surrounding soil samples fell within the range of moderate contamination, except for Cu and Cr which showed very high contamination. Cd showed the highest value (60.4) for potential ecological risk index (PERI) at the surrounding area. However, the value of Cd in the surrounding soil samples indicated a low ecological risk. The total concentrations of the PTEs were lower than their corresponding target values for both national and international standards, except for Cd (0.15 mg/kg) and Cu (37.3 mg/kg). The study concluded that the dumping of various wastes at the dumpsite was found to be a contributing factor to PTEs contamination of soil at the study area. Hence, an engineered landfill for Akure metropolis is recommended to replace the existing practice.

Source apportionment of soil PTE in a northern industrial county using PMF model: Partitioning strategies and uncertainty analysis

Positive matrix factorization (PMF) has commonly been applied for source apportionment of potentially toxic elements (PTE) in agricultural soil, however, spatial heterogeneity of PTE significantly undermines the accuracy and reliability of PMF results. In this study, a representative industrial-agricultural hub in North China (Xuanhua district, Zhangjiakou City) was selected as the research subject, multiple partition processing (PP) strategies and uncertainty analyses were integrated to advance the PMF modeling and associated algorithm mechanisms were comparatively discussed. Specifically, we adopted three methods to split the research area into several subzones according to industrial density (PP-1), population density (PP-2), and the ecological risk index (PP-3) respectively, to rectify the spatial bias phenomenon of PTE concentrations and to achieve a more interpretable result. Our results indicated that the obvious enrichment of Cd, Pb, and Zn was found in the agricultural soil, with Hg and Cd accounted for 83.49% of the overall potential ecological risk. Combining proper PP with PMF can significantly improve the modelling accuracy. Uncertainty analysis showed that interval ratios of tracer species (Cd, Pb, Hg, and Zn) calculated by PP-3 were consistently lower than that of PP-1 and PP-2, indicating that PP-3 coupled PMF can afford the optimal modeling results. It suggested that natural sources, fertilizers and pesticides, atmosphere deposition, mining, and smelting were recognized as the major contributor for the soil PTE contamination. The contribution of anthropogenic activities, specifically fertilizers and pesticides, and atmosphere deposition, increased by 1.64% and 5.91% compared to PMF results. These findings demonstrate that integration of proper partitioning processing into PMF can effectively improve the accuracy of the model even at the case of soil PTE contamination with high heterogeneity, offering support to subsequently implement directional control strategies.

Spatiotemporal variations, health risk assessment, and sources of potentially toxic elements in potamic water of the Anday Stream Basin (Türkiye), Black Sea Region.

Monitoring and protecting freshwater habitats are paramount for a sustainable water management perspective. This study investigated potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the potamic water of the Anday Stream Basin (Türkiye), Black Sea Region, for a hydrological year (from May 2020 to April 2021). Among PTEs, the highest average values were recorded for sodium (Na) at 41.3mg/L and the lowest for mercury (Hg) at 0.009μg/L and noted under quality guidelines. The stream was found to be at the level of "Low Heavy Metal Pollution" and "Low Contamination" based on the ecotoxicological risk indices. The highest calculated hazard quotient (HQ) value of 1.21E-02 for Cd was noted in the children via the dermal pathway and the lowest of 6.91E-06 for Fe in adults via the ingestion pathway. Results revealed a higher hazard index (HI) value of 1.50E-02 for Cd to children and the lowest of 1.98E-05 for Fe to adults. As a result of applying agricultural risk indices, the stream showed sodium adsorption ratio values less than 6 and was found to be "Excellent" for agriculture. However, the sodium percentage values were less than 20 and found "Permissible" and the magnesium hazard > 50 and noted as "Unsuitable" for agriculture. Statistical analysis revealed that natural factors mainly attributed to PTE contamination of the Anday Stream Basin.

Characteristics, source analysis, and health risk assessment of potentially toxic elements pollution in soil of dense molybdenum tailing ponds area in central China.

The issue of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) contamination of regional soil caused by mining activities and tailings accumulation has attracted wide attention all over the world. The East Qinling is one of the three main molybdenum mines in the world, and the concentration of PTEs such as Hg, Pb and Cu in the slag is high. Quantifying the amount of PTEs contamination in soil and identifying potential sources of contamination is vital for soil environmental management. In the present investigation, the pollution levels of 8 PTEs in the Qinling molybdenum tailings intensive area were quantitatively identified. Additionally, an integrated source-risk method was adopted for resource allocation and risk assessment based on the PMF model, the ecological risk, and the health risk assessment model. The mean concentrations of Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, Cr, Zn, As, and Hg in the 80 topsoil samples ranged from 0.80 to 13.38 times the corresponding background values; notably high levels were observed for Pb and Hg. The source partitioning results showed that PTEs were mainly affected by four pollution sources: natural and agricultural sources, coal-burning sources, combined transport and mining industry sources, and mining and smelting sources. The health risk assessment results revealed that the risks of soil PTEs for adults are acceptable, while the risks for children exceeded the limit values. The obtained results will help policymakers to obtain the sources of PTEs of tailing ponds intensive area. Moreover, it provides priorities for the governance of subsequent pollution sources and ecological restoration.

Combining approaches for environmental assessment of rehabilitated gold‐mining areas in the Eastern Amazon

AbstractMonitoring key soil and vegetation attributes in mining areas under environmental rehabilitation is essential to ensure that the intervention techniques are effective. There are several approaches to monitoring mining areas and their integration is necessary to process large amounts of information. Thus, this study aimed to (i) assess soil multi‐contamination with potentially toxic elements (PTE) and human health risks; (ii) obtain a soil quality index with soil fertility data; (iii) calculate spectral index; (iv) show rehabilitation status based on vegetation attributes, and (v) compile these indices in a single measure. Four tailings' ponds (TPs), two waste piles (WPs), and an area of native forest from a gold mine in the Carajás National Forest were evaluated. Soil quality and vegetation cover are good in forest areas, with no evidence of PTE contamination. On the other hand, the TPs have poor fertility and vegetation cover, as well as higher levels of PTE. Human health risk indices obtained for all PTE were lower than 1, indicating a low risk to human health. The results of integrating the different indices suggest that the environmental conditions of the WPs are better than those of the TPs, which are still far from the environmental conditions of native areas. Soil attributes and vegetation development in TPs areas could be enhanced by the incorporation of organic materials and fertilizers and by planting species with phytoremediation potential. Finally, the integrative approach of the different indices proved to be useful in assessing the rehabilitation progress of the areas.

Geostatistical appraisal of water quality, contamination, source distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the lower stretches of Subarnarekha River (Odisha), India, and health risk assessment by Monte Carlo simulation approach.

In the present study, the status of water quality, environmental contamination in the lower stretch of Subarnarekha River with respect to potentially toxic elements (PTEs), its seasonal distribution, and ecotoxicological health impacts were investigated. For this purpose, a combination of indexing approaches and geospatial methods was used. The estimated water quality index (WQI) has shown that the river water falls under "moderate to very poor" category during the pre-monsoon and "moderate to poor" category in the post-monsoon season. The abundance of PTEs (Pb, Cu, Ni, Cd, Fe, and Cr) was on the higher side during the pre-monsoon in comparison with the post-monsoon season. The results of contamination index (Cd) and heavy metal evaluation index (HEI) explain that Subarnarekha River has low-to-moderate levels of contamination with PTEs in the majority of sampling sites. However, HPI indicated that the river water is moderate-to-highly contaminated with PTEs in both seasons. Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) reveal that anthropogenic sources are prime contributors to PTEs contamination in Subarnarekha River. The potential non-cancerous health concerns for child and adults due to Cr and Pb in some sampling stations along the river stretch have been observed. The carcinogenic risk (CR) has been established for Cr, Pb, and Cd in Subarnarekha River with Cr (> 10-4) as the most unsafe element. Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) indicates a high risk of cancer hazards due to Cr (values > 1E-04) in present as well as future for both child and adults.

From ground to gut: Evaluating the human health risk of potentially toxic elements in soil, groundwater, and their uptake by Cocos nucifera in arsenic-contaminated environments

This study aimed to gauge the toxicity of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in coconut crops cultivated in arsenic-contaminated areas while offering a global perspective encompassing more than 100 impacted countries. The current investigation provides crucial insights into the assessment of PTEs pollution using the Bioaccumulation factor, Geo-accumulation index, Potential ecological risk index, Hazardous index, and Lifetime cancer risk (LCR) and highlights the potential human health risks posed by contaminated food, water, and soil. From 22 severely polluted sites in West Bengal, India, soil, groundwater (GW), and coconut water (CW) samples were collected, acidified, and digested using microwave digestion, for PTEs quantification using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Results revealed that despite high concentrations of arsenic in soils (4.6 ± 3.4 mg kg−1), and GW (22.2 ± 150.9 μg L−1), CW (0.7 ± 3.1 μg L−1) levels were within permissible limits. Groups of PTEs with comparable sources and distributions were discovered through Principal Component Analysis (PCA). A speciation diagram was used to predict the prevalence of arsenic species in all three matrices. The Hazardous Index (HI < 1) indicated no probability of non-carcinogenic diseases for children and adults in all the compartments. However, exposure to GW and soil contaminated with Cr, As, and Cd by children (9.02 × 10−13 to 2.77 × 10−4) and adults (6.51 × 10−14 to 1.18 × 10−4) would increase their susceptibility to cancer (LCR >10−6). The study concluded that moderate lifetime consumption of CW is safe and has no significant impact on healthy individuals. Additionally, CW is a rich source of essential micronutrients such as Zn, Fe, Mn, and B. Overall, the findings of this study could help in developing appropriate strategies for reducing PTEs contamination and protecting human health.

Estimating soil health in urban allotments: Integrated two-way soil quality index and free-living amoebae in nitrogen recycling

Nitrogen deficiency and contamination by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) adversely impact soil health and ecosystem services. Existing tools for assessing contaminated soils, necessary for sustainable management, remain limited. In this study, we introduce an integrated approach using geochemical constituents and biological factors to construct a comprehensive index to evaluate contaminant impacts on soil health. We collected samples in triplicate from six plots within an urban allotment with a history of PTE contamination. Selected biological and chemical characteristics of the samples were quantified to derive impact scores, with a single numerical index representing overall soil quality for each plot. Multivariate, T-statistics and Pearson Correlation analysis were used to identify relationships and differences between selected soil parameters between plots. The role of the free-living amoeba Acanthamoeba in nitrogen recycling was assessed with feeding experiments, enzymatic assays and bioinformatics analysis. The plot with the highest index value, indicative of good health, exhibited higher pH, significantly high microbial load, and a high nitrate to ammonium (NO3−:NH4+) ratio of 5.3. This turnover was associated with Acanthamoeba uptake of exogenous nitrates and secretion of ammonium, through the assimilatory/dissimilatory nitrate reduction pathway. In contrast, the lower index plot with the low nitrogen turnover of 0.69, showed elevated aluminium, low pH activity and a significantly reduced microbial load, dominated by aluminium resistant microorganisms. Our findings highlight the importance of a comprehensive soil quality index by integrating multiple characteristics to assess soil health and contamination. The approach addresses the need for improved tools to identify the direct impact of contaminants on soil biological activity, supporting more sustainable land management.

Mineral magnetic proxies for evaluation of anthropogenic pollution at children's playgrounds – a case study from Sofia city

Quality of the urban environment where children play is of great concern for protecting their health. Thus, fast and economically feasible proxy methods for assessment of urban environment are increasingly applied. In this study, settled dust from 13 playgrounds from Sofia city (Bulgaria), was investigated by mineral magnetism, portable X-ray fluorescence measurements, and scanning electron microscopy. The aim of the study was to evaluate the degree of anthropogenic pollution of playgrounds during winter and summer seasons and to identify pollution sources. Magnetic susceptibility (χ) was measured for two dust fractions - very coarse (grain sizes between 1 and 2 mm) and size fraction of d < 1 mm. In spite of this rough separation, systematic seasonal difference in χ of the two fractions is observed. Winter dust, containing larger amount of finer fraction shows lower χ. Regardless of lower relative content of d < 1 mm fraction, summer playground dusts are more strongly magnetic. Complex Pollution Load Index (PLI), calculated using contents of Cu, Zn, S, Pb (Potentially Toxic Elements (PTE)), shows higher contamination in summer dust, compared to winter. Anhysteretic and isothermal remanences of dust d < 1 mm demonstrate prevailing magnetically stable grains at playgrounds located at greater distance from major boulevards. Thermomagnetic analyses of magnetic susceptibility identified magnetite as the main magnetic mineral, although metallic iron was also evident in summer dust. Based on the meteorological models of atmospheric circulation over Sofia, the pollution sources suggested in a previous research, on one hand, and the carried out Factor Analysis, on the other hand, the results point out that in spite of higher PM10 dust load in winter, summer dust pollution causes stronger PTEs contamination. Factor analysis revealed four factors, explaining most of variability in the data. These factors were identified as: 1) re-suspension of soil and road dust; 2) fine particles magnetite of stable single domain grain size, originating probably from traffic exhaust and non-exhaust emissions; 3) emissions from installations burning waste materials; 4) coal burning.

Contamination and environmental risk assessment of potentially toxic elements in the surface sediments of Northwest Persian Gulf

To assess the contamination sources, patterns, and environmental risk related to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the sediment of the region, ninety-seven surface sediment samples were systematically collected from the marine boundary of the Iranian coastal territory in the northwestern Persian Gulf. The concentrations of major and trace elements in the sediments can be ranked as follows: Ca > Al > Fe > Sr > Mn > Ba > Cr > Ni > V > Zn > Cu > Pb > As > Mo > Cd.The study found that Ca, As, Sr, and Cd showed significant enrichment, while Ni and Cr showed moderate enrichment. The ecological risk index analysis indicated a low risk level, with Cd contributing to 61% and As contributing to 26% of the estimated risk. Anthropogenic sources were found to be responsible for significant enrichment of As and Cd in the northwestern Persian Gulf, particularly near coastal areas and in the Musa estuary. High concentrations of Arsenic result from urban/agricultural wastewater, industrial activities, and gas/oil fields. Natural weathering, riverbank erosion, and aeolian inputs also contribute to Arsenic levels. Cadmium pollution comes from wastewater, shipping, oil tankers, agriculture runoff, and industrial factories. Nickel and Chromium were moderately enriched, mainly due to their natural occurrence in high concentrations in the soil of southern Iran. The study also revealed a significant correlation among the elements Al, Ni, Cr, Fe, Mn, V, Zn, and Cu, suggesting that these elements predominantly originate from lithogenous sources. The study highlights the importance of identifying and controlling sources of As, Cd, Ni, and Cr pollution in the northwestern Persian Gulf to protect the marine ecosystem and public health. The implementation and enforcement of stricter environmental regulations can reduce PTEs contamination in the region and safeguard the aquatic ecosystem and public health.

Hydrogeochemical evolution of groundwater impacted by acid mine drainage (AMD) from polymetallic mining areas (South China)

Mining activities have long-term impacts on the groundwater of surrounding areas and deserve in-depth analysis and study. Herein, the geochemical mechanisms of acid mine drainage (AMD)-affected groundwaters were examined, and groundwater quality was assessed through water quality indices. 15 water samples from 7 domestic and 4 groundwater monitoring wells were tested for physical and chemical parameters in 2022, and multivariate statistical analysis was carried out with monitoring data from 21 domestic wells in 2010. The groundwater chemical composition varied from a predominantly Ca-HCO3 type in 2010 to a Ca-SO4 type in 2022. The isotopic values of δ18O and δD indicate that groundwater has not been significantly affected by evaporation. Changes in groundwater sulfate and total dissolved solids (TDS) levels over the twelve-year period confirmed the AMD infiltration impact on groundwater quality. The groundwater chemical properties changed more slowly than those of surface waters affected by AMD based on a cumulative increase in sulfate concentration of 29.94 mg/L. Changes in groundwater quality were investigated, namely, the spatiotemporal distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), including Fe, Mn, Cd, Pb, and As. Mn concentrations in upstream groundwater areas near the mine decreased by 61.8% between 2010 and 2022. Conversely, groundwater in midstream areas had Mn concentrations of 2.25 mg/L and arsenic concentrations of 11.8 μg/L, both exceeding the WHO, 2022 standard. According to multivariate statistical analysis, Mn, Cd, and Pb originated from polymetallic minerals, whereas As was likely derived from the reduction of Fe/Mn hydroxyl oxides. AMD remediation improved contaminated upstream groundwater quality over 12 years, with a 36.8% improvement in WQI values. PTE distribution determined water quality changes; therefore, PTE contamination should be treated in mid- and downstream regions while contaminated groundwater should be treated upstream.

Mineral magnetic properties of urban forest soils tailored to soil quality indicator

Ecosystem surveys reveal the benefits to society, provided by the natural environment, which in turn is chiefly regulated by the geodiversity. Thus, physico-chemical processes regulating the solid rock/sediment response to environmental changes comprise an important part in the assessment of natural ecosystems. Environmental magnetism provides a wide set of field and laboratory data able to discover natural and anthropogenic processes affecting different environmental compartments. Despite this, geosciences and environmental magnetism in particular, are under-represented in ecosystem assessment tools due to the lack of unified and clearly articulated application template. In this study, we propose a new mineral magnetic indicator of soil’s quality, based on detailed appraisal of field- and laboratory mineral magnetic characteristics of a collection of 453 urban topsoil samples. Field magnetic susceptibility (Kfield) and laboratory measurements of magnetic parameters revealed that soil magnetism reflects sensitively soils affected by vehicle traffic and park’s alleys foot load from semi-natural soil. Geochemical analyses of the content of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) on a sub-set of samples was used for magnetic data validation. Correlation analysis showed strong positive link between magnetic parameters and the main PTEs, the strongest being obtained between magnetic susceptibility and the complex pollution load index (PLI). Factor analysis suggested that three factors account for the 74% of data variability. They were assigned to: 1) traffic emissions, 2) pedogenic contribution and 3) lithogenic input plus anthropogenic organic waste additions. Novel mineral magnetic Indicator (MAG) was defined, combining information on composition, concentration and grain size of ferrimagnetic iron oxides, using scored contributions from five magnetic parameters and grain size sensitive ratios. Evaluation of the spatial MAG map showed its suitability as a complex indicator of soils’ contamination with PTEs. Kfield reflected sensitively overall anthropogenic load not necessarily related to PTEs contamination but also to foot trampling and application of fertilizers.

Concentrations, sources, and health risks of potentially toxic elements in milled maize

Milling process is an essential step in food processing, which often determines the quality of food accessible to consumers. The contributions of dry and wet milling operations to contamination levels, sources, and health risks of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in processed maize were evaluated in this study. Maize samples procured from a major market in Ilorin were milled and analyzed for 8 PTEs (Cd, Fe, Pb, As, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Cr) using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Apart from Cd, Pb, and As, the mean concentrations of other analyzed PTEs were within the permissible limits for PTEs in foodstuffs set by Codex Alimentarius Commission. The mean concentrations of Pb, Mn, and Zn increased from 2.75, 0.78, and 0.46 mg/kg in maize control to 3.03, 0.80, and 0.65 mg/kg in dry-milled maize, respectively, while mean concentrations of Fe, Pb, and Zn increased from 1.33, 2.75, and 0.46 mg/kg in maize control to 1.41, 2.90, and 0.49 mg/kg in wet-milled maize, respectively. The probable PTEs sources in milled maize identified using the positive matrix factorization model include wear of grinding disks; emissions from leaded fuel combustion; lubrication oil leakage during milling; vehicle traffic emissions; application of pesticides and herbicides; use of manure and Zn-enriched fertilizer; and irrigation with industrial wastewater. Assessment of hazard indexes (HIs) and lifetime cancer risks (LCR) revealed that associated health risks of PTEs from consumption of milled maize were insignificant, although HI and LCR results suggest the possibilities of health deterioration in children and adults from long-term consumption of milled maize in Ilorin. This study advocates improvement in maize cultivation and milling processes to avert PTEs contamination.

Potential Toxic-Element Pollution in Surface Water and Its Implications for Aquatic and Human Health: Source–Pathway–Receptor Model

This study focused on assessing the extent of pollution in both flowing and non-flowing surface water within the Matjhabeng mining area of South Africa, with particular emphasis on the substantial impact of gold mine tailings. A comprehensive analysis of physical water-quality attributes, including potentially toxic elements (PTEs), and relevant pollution risk indices was undertaken. To comprehensively elucidate the potential risks to aquatic organisms and human health, a risk assessment framework predicated upon the source–pathway–receptor model was developed. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was employed as a multivariate statistical tool to discern the potential origins of PTE contamination within the environment. The results substantiate pronounced pollution manifestations within the surface water milieu of the Matjhabeng mining area. Specifically, concentrations of critical PTEs, such as arsenic, cobalt, copper, iron, selenium, and zinc, exhibited transgressions of the regulatory thresholds stipulated by both the South African Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) and the Canadian Council of the Ministers of the Environment (CCME). Additionally, concentrations of the aforementioned elements exceeded the stipulated DWAF guidelines for irrigation water usage. Pollution indices, encompassing the Single-Factor Pollution Index and the Nemerow Integrated Pollution Index, discerned moderate contamination stemming from As, while remarkably elevated pollution levels were identified for selenium. PCA elucidated 94.5% of the aggregate variance, revealing cobalt, copper, nickel, and zinc as coalescing within PC1, indicative of a common anthropogenic provenance that is conceivably linked to historical gold mine tailings. PC2 exhibited an aggregation of chromium, iron, and lead, reaffirming this shared anthropogenic etiology. The third PCA component was characterized by selenium, followed by arsenic and magnesium in the fourth. The resultant PTE contamination underscores a profound ecological and public health risk, impacting both the aquatic ecosystems and the local community within the precincts of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality (MLM) area, with consequential amplification of susceptibilities to deleterious health consequences. Urgent and concerted interventions are imperative to ameliorate the emergent decline in surface-water quality within the MLM locale. The adoption of nature-based remediation paradigms holds promise for efficaciously elevating water quality, ameliorating community health, and underpinning the long-term economic viability of the region.

Potential Toxic Elements and Their Carcinogenic and Non-Carcinogenic Risk Assessment in Some Commercially Important Fish Species from a Ramsar Site.

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) such as Hg, As, and Pb have become concentrated in the aquatic ecosystem as a result of increased human activities. However, these substances frequently have synergistic or antagonistic effects on the human body or other animals. As a result, there are concerns world-wide that commercially available food products, especially fish, may be contaminated with hazardous elements. In this study, samples of four selected fishes, Gutum (Lepidocephalichthys guntea), Baim (Macrognathus pancalus), Baila (Glossogobius giuris), Meni (Nandus nandus) were analyzed from one of the largest freshwater wetlands (designed as a Ramsar Site) in South Asia to evaluate PTEs contamination status and human health risk assessment. The result demonstrated that the degree of contamination for six PTEs decreased in the following sequences for fish: Fe > Zn > Cu > Pb > As > Hg. The edible part of G. giuris had the maximum value for Hg (0.42 μg/g dw), while N. nandus predominantly accumulated As (<0.41 μg/g dw). The estimated daily intake (EDI) values ranged from 0.003 to 1.75, which was much lower than the recommended values. The hazard index (HI), THQ, total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) scores through consuming fish followed the decreasing order of Fe > Hg > Cu > Zn > Pb. The values for each index were less than 1, indicating that there were no substantial health risks for the consumers. The carcinogenic risks (CR) derived from the intake of Pb ranged from 4.92 × 10-8 to 4.14 × 10-8 for males and 5.45 × 10-8 to 4.59 × 10-8 for females, which also did not exceed the standard limit (1.00 × 10-6). This study demonstrated that, under the existing consumption rate, there was no potential health harm to consumers from consuming the studied fishes. This study offers a chance to regularly check PTEs in this environment, reducing the contamination of heavy metals.

Monitoring Mining-Induced Geo-Hazards in a Contaminated Mountainous Region of Indonesia Using Satellite Imagery

Mining-induced or enhanced geo-hazards (MGHs) pose significant risks in rural mountainous regions with underground mining operations by harming groundwater layers, water circulation systems, and mountain stability. MGHs occurring in naturally contaminated environments can severely amplify socio-environmental risks. A high correlation was found among undermining development, precipitation, and hazards; however, details of MGHs have yet to be adequately characterized. This study investigated multiple mining-induced/enhanced geo-hazards in a naturally contaminated mountain region in Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo Province, Indonesia, in 2020, where a rapidly developing coexisting mining sector was present. We utilized PlanetScope’s CubeSat constellations and Sentinel-1 dataset to assess the volume, distribution, pace, and pattern of MGHs. The findings reveal that severe landslides and floods accelerated the mobilization of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) via the river water system, thus considerably exacerbating socio-environmental risks. These results indicate potential dangers of enhanced PTE contamination for marine ecosystems and humans at a regional level. The study design and data used facilitated a comprehensive assessment of the MGHs and associated risks, providing important information for decision-makers and stakeholders. However, limitations in the methodology should be considered when interpreting the findings. The societal benefits of this study include informing policies and practices that aim to mitigate the negative impacts of mining activities on the environment and society at the local and regional levels.

Source-specific risk judgement and environmental impact of potentially toxic elements in fine road dust from an integrated industrial city, North China

The contamination of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in road dust of large industrial cities is extremely serious. Determining the priority risk control factors of PTE contamination in road dust is critical to enhance the environmental quality of such cities and mitigate the risk of PTE pollution. The Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method and geographical models were employed to assess the probabilistic pollution levels and eco-health risks of PTEs originating from different sources in fine road dust (FRD) of large industrial cities, and to identify key factors affecting the spatial variability of priority control sources and target PTEs. It was observed that in FRD of Shijiazhuang, a typical large industrial city in China, more than 97% of the samples had an INI > 1 (INImean = 1.8), indicating moderately contaminated with PTEs. The eco-risk was at least considerable (NCRI >160) with more than 98% of the samples, mainly caused by Hg (Ei (mean) = 367.3). The coal-related industrial source (NCRI(mean) = 235.1) contributed 70.9% to the overall eco-risk (NCRI(mean) = 295.5) of source-oriented risks. The non-carcinogenic risk of children and adults are of less importance, but the carcinogenic risk deserves attention. The coal-related industry is a priority control pollution source for human health protection, with As corresponding to the target PTE. The major factors affecting the spatial changes of target PTEs (Hg and As) and coal-related industrial sources were plant distribution, population density, and gross domestic product. The hot spots of coal-related industrial sources in different regions were strongly interfered by various human activities. Our results illustrate spatial changes and key-influencing factors of priority source and target PTEs in Shijiazhuang FRD, which are helpful for environmental protection and control of environmental risks by PTEs.
