The Digital Medic: Assessing the Role of Social Media in Empowering Individuals with Health Knowledge and Choices

Purpose: The rapid expansion of social media platforms has significantly transformed communication patterns and information access. This study examines the role of social media in sharing health-related content among Indian users, evaluating its trust, influence, and impact. Methodology: A questionnaire survey was conducted among 100 people using SPSS v24, G-power, and literature reviews. Statistical methods assessed reliability, trust, influencing behaviour, and impact perspectives. A model was developed using SPSS 21 AMOS software. Findings: This study examines the transformative potential of social media platforms like YouTube and Instagram for health-oriented information dissemination. It found a significant association between gender and the use of social media for medical information, with independent variables including reliability and Trust, Influence and Behaviour Impact and perspective, and positive impact. The value of ANOVA in the regression model was 0.00, indicating a better fit for the regression model. Practical Implication: The effectiveness of tools in decision-making is crucial for organisations like fitness clubs, gyms, and yoga centres to boost publicity, increase consumer base, and achieve higher revenues, while general people can find trustworthy healthcare information platforms.

Investigating the Impact of Social Media on Secondary School Students’ Motivation and Engagement in English Language Learning

Abstract: This study explores the potential of social media platforms, particularly Instagram and Twitter, to supplement traditional English language learning for secondary school students. It acknowledges the limitations of traditional methods in fostering real-world language use and seeks to investigate how social media can enhance student motivation and engagement with English outside the classroom. Employing a quantitative approach, the study surveyed 100 randomly selected male students in grades eleven and twelve from Al-Hassan Bin Hashim Post Basic School in Muscat, Oman. Participants, aged 16-17, were active users of either Instagram or Twitter. Data was collected through a questionnaire consisting of 10 closed-ended and 5 open-ended questions. The study found a positive student perception towards the utility of Instagram and Twitter for English language learning. However, students also acknowledged that social media, despite its potential, cannot replace traditional classroom instruction entirely

A Perceived Risk Index Leveraging Social Media Data: Assessing Severity of Fire on Microblogging

AbstractFires represent a significant threat to the environment, infrastructure, and human safety, often spreading rapidly with wide-ranging consequences such as economic losses and life risks. Early detection and swift response to fire outbreaks are crucial to mitigating their impact. While satellite-based monitoring is effective, it may miss brief or indoor fires. This paper introduces a novel Perceived Risk Index (PRI) that, complementing satellite data, leverages social media data to provide insights into the severity of fire events. In the light of the results of statistical analysis, the PRI incorporates the number of fire-related tweets and the associated emotional expressions to gauge the perceived risk. The index’s evaluation involves the development of a comprehensive system that collects, classifies, annotates, and correlates social media posts with satellite data, presenting the findings in an interactive dashboard. Experimental results using diverse datasets of real-fire tweets demonstrate an average best correlation of 77% between PRI and the brightness values of fires detected by satellites. This correlation extends to the real intensity of the corresponding fires, showcasing the potential of social media platforms in furnishing information for emergency response and decision-making. The proposed PRI proves to be a valuable tool for ongoing monitoring efforts, having the potential to capture data on fires missed by satellites. This contributes to the development to more effective strategies for mitigating the environmental, infrastructural, and safety impacts of fire events.

Abstract: In the 2019 Indian Lok Sabha elections, political campaigns underwent a major transformation due to the widespread use of social media. This research examines the relationship between social media and political campaigns in the 2019 elections, emphasising important trends, challenges, and consequences. Over 900 million eligible voters participated in the 2019 elections, making it the largest democratic election in the world. Political parties and candidates realised the potential of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp to reach voters, influence public opinion, and garner support. The political parties across India, irrespective of national, state or local status, leveraged the social media platforms to their benefit and reaped the most out of their presence on social media. Major differences reflected through the use of social media to campaign and bolster respective parties' election agenda, spreading their words of promise of welfare for the citizens while trying to reach the farthest corner of the country. The larger use of the same could be seen in case of national parties like that of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and Indian National Congress (INC), while they leveraged the use of social media to strengthen their presence amongst the voters, the smaller parties like the state parties and local parties used the social media but to limited extent as, in most of the cases the presence of the larger parties could be felt more. By using targeted advertising, data analysis, and engaging content, the political parties’ social media campaigns could effectively spread their message and connect with larger audiences. With impactful visuals, memorable slogans, and interactive content, the parties successfully promoted their message of welfare of the citizens, nationalism, growth, and cultural heritage, finding support among the voter base throughout India. The political parties in India, including national parties like Indian National Congress, Trinamool Congress faced challenges in competing with the ruling party's digital presence. Despite using social media for outreach, the opposition parties couldn't match the BJP's effective communication and failed to address issues like economic troubles, inequality, and unemployment. The 2019 election was also plagued by fake news, misinformation, and divisive content on social media, which threatened the electoral process. The unchecked spread of misinformation and sensationalist content on social media has intensified societal divisions, eroded trust, and lowered the calibre of public debate. This raises concerns about the detrimental effects of social media on democratic principles and institutions. The 2019 Lok Sabha elections highlight the urgent need for increased transparency, responsibility, and regulation in political campaigns on social media. Combating misinformation, protecting the fairness of elections, and promoting digital understanding are crucial for safeguarding the integrity of democratic processes and fostering informed voter participation.

Twitter’s Technological Affordances and Science Journalism in the Global South: A Media Richness Approach from South Africa

ABSTRACT This study uses media richness theory to examine social media usage in science journalism from the Global South. By analysing content from the Twitter feeds of three South African-based science journalism outfits, the central question is: How do South African science journalism outfits use the affordances of Twitter to engage local audiences with global science issues in contextually relevant ways? The study finds that multilingualism in science journalism tweets is made possible by the affordances of Twitter as a multimodal platform, which allows science journalists to make content available in Zulu, the most widely spoken language in South Africa. It further demonstrates that by using simplified graphics, science journalism tweets can simplify what would otherwise be complex scientific developments. Finally, it shows discrepancies in how these accounts respond to their audiences and harnesses Twitter’s affordance of real-time engagement between the senders and receivers of messages. By using these case studies to illustrate how Twitter’s technological affordances empower South African science journalists to bridge linguistic and informational gaps, engage diverse audiences, and facilitate real-time interactions, this study demonstrates the potential of social media platforms to democratise science communication and foster inclusivity, in science journalism in the Global South.

The Impact of TikTok on Body Image: A Narrative Review of the Literature

TikTok is a widely used social media platform that enables users to create and share short videos with music, using various filters and creative features. It has a large and diverse user base, especially among young people, who are particularly vulnerable to influences on body image. This study aims to review the existing literature on how TikTok influences users’ perceptions of their own bodies and those of others.
 A narrative review was conducted using various databases. The selection and screening of studies were based on predefined criteria, focusing on those that investigated the relationship between TikTok usage and body image perceptions.
 The review revealed a mixed impact of TikTok usage on body image perceptions. Several studies indicated that exposure to body-related content on TikTok could lead to negative body image and dissatisfaction among users. However, some studies suggested that TikTok could also be a platform for promoting body positivity and acceptance.

Evolution of Public Responses to COVID-19: Comparing Changes in People's Emotions, Behaviors, and Precautions at the Onset and End Stage of the Pandemic.

Introduction The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a significant impact on global public health, with profound changes in people's psychological and behavioral responses to the virus. Our aim is to evaluate the evolution of people's responses to COVID-19. Methods This observational study compares two groups of YouTube videos (495 videos in the first group and 620 videos in the second group) posted during different periods of the pandemic to examine the evolution of people's emotions, behaviors, and precautions towardCOVID-19. We analyzed the titles of these videos to gain insights into the evolving public responses to the pandemic and how they may impact future public health interventions. Results Our results show a shift in focus from basic prevention measures to a more nuanced approach to prevention and management, characterized by a greater emphasis on vaccination and travel-related precautions in the second group of videos. These findings can inform public health policies and interventions aimed at mitigating the impact of COVID-19 and other pandemics. Furthermore, this study highlights the potential of social media platforms, such as YouTube, as a tool for monitoring and understanding public responses to pandemics and other health crises. Conclusion Continued analysis of public responses and behaviors can help inform effective public health interventions and policies as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve.

From the virtual frontlines: law enforcement’s experience with social media in policing activities

ABSTRACT Social media is increasingly used by both the public and police agencies. While numerous studies have documented the use of social media to communicate with the public, little research has focused on the use of social media in policing activities such as criminal intelligence and investigation. The objective of this research is to understand the use of social media in different policing activities by police in Canada. A questionnaire on the use of social media was completed by 177 members of six police organizations. Results show that social media is now an important tool for investigating crimes committed both online and offline. Gathering intelligence about organized crime, investigating runaways, and online crimes appeared to be the most widespread use of social media platforms and Facebook was the media most widely used during the period in which our study took place. Participants indicated that lack of knowledge of other social media, the use of Facebook by organized crime members, and having a personal Facebook account favored its use, despite the relevance of other platforms, such as YouTube or Twitter. Results highlight the need to improve training and efforts to maximize the potential of social media platforms to fight crime more efficiently.

Investigating Public Sentiment on Laryngeal Cancer in 2022 Using Machine Learning

This study aims to investigate public sentiment on laryngeal cancer via tweets in 2022 using machine learning. We aimed to analyze the public sentiment about laryngeal cancer on Twitter last year. A novel dataset was created for the purpose of this study by scraping all tweets from 1st Jan 2022 that included the hashtags #throatcancer, #laryngealcancer, #supraglotticcancer, #glotticcancer, and #subglotticcancer in their text. After all tweets underwent a fourfold data cleaning process, they were analyzed using natural language processing and sentiment analysis techniques to classify tweets into positive, negative, or neutral categories and to identify common themes and topics related to laryngeal cancer. The study analyzed a corpus of 733 tweets related to laryngeal cancer. The sentiment analysis revealed that 53% of the tweets were neutral, 34% were positive, and 13% were negative. The most common themes identified in the tweets were treatment and therapy, risk factors, symptoms and diagnosis, prevention and awareness, and emotional impact. This study highlights the potential of social media platforms like Twitter as a valuable source of real-time, patient-generated data that can inform healthcare research and practice. Our findings suggest that while Twitter is a popular platform, the limited number of tweets related to laryngeal cancer indicates that a better strategy could be developed for online communication among netizens regarding the awareness of laryngeal cancer.

Exploring the Success Factor Of Digital Marketing: A case study of Private Healthcare Organization in an Emerging Economy

 The purpose of this study is to assess the potential of social media platforms to build a successful marketing campaign for the private health-care industry. This will be accomplished by studying the current trends, audiences, and marketing tactics that are applied to these channels. In addition, the research will make a contribution to this understanding by investigating the efficacy of various types of marketing strategies that are used in the private health-care industry, such as influencer marketing, content marketing, and social media advertising, and how these strategies can be leveraged to create marketing strategies that are more effective. This research project will also focus on identifying any bottlenecks that could be hindering the utilisation of these channels and providing solutions to improve their effectiveness in the marketing mix. This will be done as part of the overall goal of improving the effectiveness of the marketing mix. At the end of the day, the purpose of this research is to develop an understanding of how social media channels can be utilised successfully as an important instrument in marketing for the health-care industry.

Interactive Governmental Communication Promoting Participatory Citizen Engagement in Health Crisis Events - Evidence from India

During crises events, governments attempt to diminish the situational uncertainty and distrust among citizens and control their emotional response. Drawing on the merits of interactive communication in the crisis times and potential of social media platforms, we empirically investigated how Government of India (GoI) used Twitter to enable participatory citizen engagement during the nationwide lockdown (March 24 - May 31, 2020) to deal with COVID-19. In this study we used social media analytics to examine, how interactive governmental communication relates to some theoretically relevant factors such as participatory citizens' engagement, media richness, situational uncertainty, level of distrust and citizens' emotions fostered by pandemic crisis. The analysis based on data extracted from official Twitter handles of GoI for the lockdown period showed that the participatory citizen engagement in interactive governmental communication effectively promotes citizens' positive emotions and reduces levels of situational uncertainty and distrust. But media richness should not be overemphasized, as it may attract undesirable outcomes.

The Role of Social Media in Rural Development – A Study in Telangana State

Digital technologies encompassing social media have changed our way of life and brought in countless benefits such as greater convenience, quicker communication, access to information, social connectedness and new types of leisure. This study investigates the role of social media platforms in rural areas of Telangana. The research study design is descriptive and has used cross-sectional survey method. People living in the villages of Telangana are the targeted population, and the villages are the sampling units. Nine hundred respondents from 30 villages spanning 30 districts are surveyed. Farmers using social media seek information on weather, government policies and plans in agriculture, and availability of best quality seeds and fertilisers. The facility also helps them connect with experts to resolve their problems and delivers educational and training information. The number of people using social media for marketing agricultural produce and sharing farming practices is still on the lower side. People in rural areas use WhatsApp/Facebook for sharing farming/business-related information. The potential of social media platforms remains unexplored; if used optimally, it can prove beneficial.

Use and Effectiveness of Social-Media-Delivered Weight Loss Interventions among Teenagers and Young Adults: A Systematic Review.

Obesity is a risk factor that exponentially increases morbidity and mortality in the world. Today, new health strategies are being implemented based on the use of social media but the use and effectiveness for these interventions needs to be assessed. The objective of this systematic review is to assess the impact of social-media-delivered weight loss interventions among teenagers and young adults. We searched PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, PsycINFO, and OVID to identify articles that focused on this topic. Fourteen studies were included in the final review. The commitment of the participants was found to be fundamental factor when assessing the impact of social-media-delivered weight loss interventions, but also the social context in which the interventions were carried out. Our study highlights the potential of social media platforms to address weight loss interventions among younger groups. The works evaluated showed the usefulness of social media for the adequate monitoring and control in these groups. Finally, the current variety of study designs in this field highlights the need for greater homogeneity in their methodology and applications, which is a fundamental step before these tools could be considered a suitable tool for overweight management in clinical practice.

I Refused to Say #MeToo: Negotiating Between Individual Agency and ‘Imagined’ Platform Constraints

This article describes how ‘imagined’ constraints of the social media platform by its users stand crucial while actualising platform affordances and exercising individual agency. I use the term ‘imagined constraints’ to explain how constraints of the media platform are speculated by my participants while they negotiate between the materiality of the platform and social environment to formulate their restricted agency. Here, I use a recent example of feminist hashtag movement ‘#MeToo’ as a case in point. Previous literature addressing feminist hashtag activism and other social movements influenced by social media platforms mainly discuss the participatory potential of these platforms. However, empirical investigation into the factors leading to non-participation in movements like #MeToo has hardly captured any scholarly attention. To address this existing gap in the literature, this article analyses embodied experiences shared through in-depth interviews by 11 Indian women who made a conscious decision of not participating in the #MeToo movement. I discuss my results taking into consideration theories of ‘imagined platform affordances’ and shaping of individual agency in terms of activist participation. I discuss that ‘Imagined constraints’ of the social media platform are chiefly shaped by an individual’s analysis of their sociocultural environment in which media platforms exist. These imagined constraints of a platform lead to constitute a ‘constrained agency’ of an individual. I argue that, while we theorise the potential of social media platforms in facilitating hashtag feminist movements like #MeToo, we must take into consideration the formulation of ‘imagined constraints of the platform’ by its users, as it stands crucial in guiding their participatory action.
