GREEN ADSORBENT SYNTHESIS FROMORANGE MESOCARP CELLULOSE USING GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION

The potential of agricultural waste like orange (Citrus sinensis) mesocarp is yet to be explored. Thus, in this study the extractionof green adsorbent that will be renewable, low cost and environmentally friendly from orange mesocarp was examined. The extraction was done using alkali pretreatment method followed by bleaching process to obtain cellulose and dissolvethe hemicellulose, lignin and other extractives. Then, graft copolymerisation of acrylamide onto the cellulose obtainedwas done usingfree radical initiation system. Grafting parameterswere studied by varying the effects of initiator concentrations,monomer to cellulose ratio, temperature and time. Distilled water was used toextract the formedpolyacrylamide (PAam)for 48 hours. And the characterization of the extracted and grafted cellulose samples was carried out by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR).Orange mesocarp gave a cellulose average yield of 29.1%. The optimum grafting conditions were found to be 30OC at a time interval of 2 hours, ratio of monomer to cellulose being 3:1 and initiator concentration of 0.020M. The percentages of polymerization, graft and graft efficiency were 113.40, 86.83 and 45.90respectively. Also, the absorbance peaks of thesamplesconfirmed that grafting was effectively carried out on the cellulose backbone.

Potential of agricultural waste (rice and corn straw to development of cattle in Harau District, Lima Puluh Kota Regency

The development of livestock business requires the availability of feed, both in quantity and quality. Limited feed can cause disruption of production and reproduction of both poultry, small and large livestock. Small livestock and large livestock of the ruminant group can utilize agricultural waste as a source of forage feed. Utilization of waste is one way to save costs and also increase efficiency in providing feed. This study aims to determine 1. Availability of agricultural waste in the development of cattle, 2. Capacity of agricultural waste, 3. Carrying capacity of waste. This research was conducted in Harau District, Fifty City District. The research method used is a survey method with the main research data source coming from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), and supporting data from related journals. Data processing using the formula for determining the potential capacity and index of holding capacity of agricultural waste. The results showed that the potential of rice and corn agricultural waste available in Harau District was 74,389,240 tons which could accommodate 22,707 ST cattle. Of the existing population, agricultural waste can still accommodate 15,560 ST of cattle. It can be concluded that the development of cattle in Harau District, Lima Puluh Kota Regency, can still be carried out due to the availability of forage waste at a safe IDD level, namely >2.

Effect of initial C/N ratio and turning frequency on quality of final compost of turkey manure and olive pomace

In Morocco, the potential of agricultural waste is estimated at 34.7 MT/year. Composting is an effective way for waste management. If badly monitored, it can affect the environment. Initial C/N ratio (C/Ni) and aeration appear to be major factors impacting the composting process. This work studied the effect of C/Ni and turning frequency (TF) on the olive pomace and turkey manure co-composting process and on the final compost quality. The study concerned the Moroccan agricultural region Chaouia-Ouardigha where these two by-products are abundant and not valued. Six heaps (H1 to H6), at three levels of C/Ni (20, 22, 28) and two levels of TF (once and twice a week), were studied. Statistical tests showed that the studied factors had no significant effects on pH, total nitrogen, electrical conductivity, and cation exchange capacity (CEC). However, C/Ni had a significant increase of 60% in nitrates. Varying from 20 to 22 or from 22 to 28, C/Ni reversed its significant effect on final C/N and CEC/organic carbon. TF reduced significantly OM and final C/N by about 22% and 9% respectively. The dendrogram showed that the six heaps could form at the end two groups: group 1 (four heaps) and group 2 (two heaps) with a similarity of about 75 and 90 respectively. C/Ni of 22 and TF of twice a week seem to be an optimum to produce a final compost of better quality. This work shows that (1) C/Ni and TF significantly impact several final quality parameters of composts from olive pomace and turkey manure, and (2) composting has a strong effect of reducing the variability between heaps initially different to produce very similar final composts.

Animal feed is only obtained from daily grazing without taking into account the needs of livestock. The problems that are often faced by farmers in dairy goat cultivation are the quality of the feed provided is still relatively low and commercial feed is expensive. This is due to fluctuations in the quality and quality of existing feed raw materials, especially from forages and legumes. Alternative feed from agricultural waste is not utilized because the knowledge of farmers regarding feed processing and improving feed nutrition is limited. The limitations of tools such as chopper machines used in chopping. Traditional maintenance and production costs that are not properly monitored, steps need to be taken to improve maintenance management and feed management to improve the welfare of farmers. Based on the results of the proposal team's analysis of the problems experienced by partners, in this year's service activities, the proposer team formulates solutions to overcome partner problems. The solution offered for partner problems is through the Triple Better Program theory by Patrick Boyle; informational through counseling partners about the potential of agricultural waste as fermented feed to increase the quality and quantity of livestock production, institutional through Training Activities for Partners on how to treat waste agriculture into fermented feed according to livestock needs, and training and counseling on group organization and good business management and developmental, namely monitoring the level of partner empowerment from an economic perspective.

Development planning ranch area based on the potential of feeding ruminants in Aceh, Indonesia

The research objectives were: (1) to determine which ruminants could be developed based on regional resource support; and (2) to identify the potential of agricultural waste to support livestock development in Pidie Regency, Aceh. This research used descriptive and exploratory methods. The descriptive method described the condition of development of potential forage areas in the Pidie district. The population data for large ruminants was calculated based on the population structure of production (weaning, young, adult, and imported cattle). Furthermore, the population based on age was converted into Animal Unit (AU). The results found that the Pidie regency had the potential for livestock development. The sub-districts of Padang Tiji had an ample opportunity as producer of rice farming waste with a total of 4,734.80 tonnes/year, maize 81.3; cassava 12.5; soybean 4.95; green beans 1.37 and peanuts 0.822 DDM tonnes/year. The potential that had not been utilized was 4,241.57 tonnes/year and has a capacity of 3,720.68 (ST/year), followed by Sakti district and Mutiara Timur districts. The conclusion showed Pidie Regency can increase the population of ruminants by increasing the benefits of feed from agricultural waste.

Investigating the effect of porosity level and pore former type on the mechanical and corrosion resistance properties of agro-waste shaped porous alumina ceramics

The strength integrity and chemical stability of porous alumina ceramics operating under extreme service conditions are of major importance in understanding their service behavior if they are to stand the test of time. In the present study, the effect of porosity and different pore former type on the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance properties of porous alumina ceramics have been studied. Given the potential of agricultural wastes as pore-forming agents (PFAs), a series of porous alumina ceramics (Al2O3-xPFA; x=5, 10, 15 and 20 wt%) were successfully prepared from rice husk (RH) and sugarcane bagasse (SCB) through the powder metallurgy technique. Experimental results showed that the porosity (44–67%) and the pore size (70–178 µm) of porous alumina samples maintained a linear relationship with the PFA loading. Comprehensive mechanical strength characterization of the porous alumina samples was conducted not just as a function of porosity but also as a function of the different PFA type used. Overall, the mechanical properties showed an inverse relationship with the porosity as the developed porous alumina samples exhibited tensile and compressive strengths of 20.4–1.5 MPa and 179.5–10.9 MPa respectively. Moreover, higher strengths were observed in the SCB shaped samples up to the 15 wt% PFA mark, while beyond this point, the silica peak observed in the XRD pattern of the RH shaped samples favored their relatively high strength. The corrosion resistance characterization of the porous alumina samples in hot 10 wt% NaOH and 20 wt% H2SO4 solutions was also investigated by considering sample formulations with 5–15 wt% PFA addition. With increasing porosity, the mass loss range in RH and SCB shaped samples after corrosion in NaOH solution for 8 h were 1.25–3.6% and 0.44–2.9% respectively; on the other hand, after corrosion in H2SO4 solution for 8 h, the mass loss range in RH and SCB shaped samples were 0.62–1.5% and 0.68–3.3% respectively.

Production, Comparative and Quantitative Analysis of Citric acid by Aspergillus niger using Food Waste as a Substrate

In this study the main emphasis is given on the techniques by which citric acid can be produced at low cost. The potential of agricultural waste (Apple pomace, carrot waste and pineapple peel) as a substrate was examined for citric acid production by Aspergillus niger using Solid State Fermentation technique. The citric acid concentration and biomass was determined during fermentation period. The amount of citric acid was determined by titration using 0.1 N NaOH and biomass was determined by oven drying method. The optimization of three parameters (temperature, Low molecular weight alcohol and nitrogen source) was carried out. The study revealed that these parameters effect citric acid production extremely. The maximum yield was obtained in case of apple pomace followed by pineapple peel and then the carrot waste. In case of alcohol, 4% methanol gives the maximum yield as compared to isopropyl alcohol. In case of carbon and nitrogen source, sucrose 5% and NH4NO3 0.25% give more citric acid yield as compared with the glucose 5% and NH4NO3 1% respectively. When fermentation media was kept at different temperature the maximum yield was obtained at temperature 30°C as compared with the 4°C. The study has revealed that food waste material can be used for citric acid production by SSF using Aspergillus niger. The use of these wastes might represent an efficient method of reducing the environmental problem due to their disposal and also help in the reduction of the substrate cost.

Cr(VI) reduction in naturally rich growth medium and sugarcane bagasse by Acinetobacter haemolyticus

The potential of agricultural waste as substitute for rich-growth medium for bacteria during Cr(VI) reduction was investigated using the locally isolated Cr(VI) resistant-reducing strain of Acinetobacter haemolyticus and sugarcane bagasse. A. haemolyticus showed higher resistance to 100 mg/L Cr(VI) in Luria Bertani (>1010 CFU/mL) compared to sugarcane bagasse (106 CFU/mL). Higher Cr(VI) reduction by the SCB-immobilized bacteria (>90%) compared to in LB only (around 25%) clearly indicated the role of SCB in carrying out abiotic reduction of Cr(VI) as well as Cr(VI) adsorption. Nevertheless, Cr(III) was detected on the bacterial surface using Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) and electron microscopy (FESEM–EDX) analysis. The Cr(III) deposition occurred probably via complex formation with either carboxyl, hydroxyl or amide groups present on the bacterial cells surface as suggested from the FT-IR analysis. TEM analysis further showed Cr distribution at the membrane and cytosolic fractions. This work clearly demonstrated the role of bacteria in reducing Cr(VI) to Cr(III) as well as the potential of using agricultural waste material such as SCB to carry out abiotic Cr(VI) reduction.

Abstract Utilization of fish waste as an alternative feed ingredient in the effort to increase the availability of raw materials making up rations. Banana skin is one that has the potential of agricultural waste into alternative feed ingredients, but the nutritional value contained in the banana peel is still low so we need to attempt to improve nutritional content, one of which is fermentation method using Trichoderma viride and Bacillus subtilis in order to improve crude protein and lower content of crude fiber on a banana peel. This study aims to determine the influence of Trichoderma viride on crude protein and crude fiber are fermented banana skin, know the effect of Bacillus subtilis on crude protein and crude fiber are fermented banana skin and know the effect of interaction of Trichoderma viride and Bacillus subtilis of crude protein and fiber fermented banana skin rough. This research method is to experiment with Completely Randomized Design (CRD) as a factorial experimental design. The treatments used consisted of two factors, namely the effect of Trichoderma viride (factor A) and Bacillus subtilis (factor B). Factor A consisted of three dose levels: 0%, 3% and 6%, while factor B consists of three levels ie dose of 0%, 4% and 8%. Each treatment combination was replicated 3 times. The results showed that the use of Trichoderma viride and Bacillus subtilis in fermentation processes plantain skin showed significant differences on crude protein and crude fiber on dry matter (p<0.05).
