Introducing PCL-Based Electrospun Nanocomposite Wound Dressings: Synergistic Effects of Curcumin and Reduced Graphene Oxide

ABSTRACT The development of effective wound dressings is critical for enhancing patient outcomes in both acute and chronic wound care scenarios. In this research, electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds were fabricated from poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), enhanced with curcumin and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) to optimize their biomedical applications, particularly in wound healing. The resulting scaffolds were rigorously characterized through scanning electron microscopy, contact angle measurements, water uptake capacity, and water vapor transmission rate assays. The biocompatibility of these novel nanofibers was affirmed through MTT assays. Antibacterial tests confirmed the scaffolds’ ability to inhibit both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, with inhibition zones measuring up to 9.9 mm for S. aureus and 9.2 mm for E. coli. Additionally, scaffolds containing curcumin exhibited significant antioxidant activity, achieving up to 40% radical scavenging efficiency. The study further revealed the scaffolds’ capability for sustained drug release, with an initial burst release within the first 12 hours followed by a gradual release over 168 hours. Overall, the PCL-curcumin-RGO electrospun mats demonstrated considerable potential for biomedical applications, notably in the field of wound dressings, due to their enhanced antibacterial, antioxidant, and biocompatible properties.

A 3D printable near-infrared triggered hydrogel with MoS2 as the crosslink center for tissue repair.

Near-infrared (NIR) light, compared with ultraviolet (UV) light, has a stronger tissue penetration ability and is widely used in the medical field. However, few hydrogels can be triggered by NIR. Here, a modular polymer-nanosheet (metal disulfide) (PNS) hydrogel system was proposed, which can be photo-crosslinked through photothermal conversion under NIR light. MoS2, a transition-metal dichalcogenide, was used as a crosslink center in PNS hydrogels. Mo and S (from thiolated polymers), which are essential for gelation, were discovered to have new bonds. Furthermore, 3D printing of NIR-triggered PNS hydrogels was achieved conceptually with masked NIR. Moreover, multiple hydrogels and metal disulfides were applicable in this modular gelation system. This study indicated that these PNS hydrogels have great potential in many smart biomedical applications, including wearable sensors, noninvasive in vivo 3D bioprinting, and tissue repair substitutes.

Advances in Black Phosphorus Quantum Dots for Cancer Research: Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications.

In the past few years, there has been notable advancement in nanotechnology, leading to the development of new materials with potential uses in the medical field, especially in cancer diagnosis, imaging, and therapy. Black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) are one of the emerging nanomaterials that have generated interest due to their unique properties and potential in biomedical applications. This review aims to give a detailed overview of how BPQDs are synthesized, characterized, and utilized. The synthesis methods of BPQDs are discussed, with a focus on obtaining size-controlled and high-quality BPQDs. Two main approaches, top-down exfoliation and bottom-up techniques, are described. Despite advancements in synthesis, there are challenges hindering the practical application of BPQDs, such as poor dispersion and short durability. To address these issues, techniques to enhance biocompatibility and reduce potential toxicity, such as surface modifications, are discussed. BPQDs have potential in bioimaging as they offer higher resolution and sensitivity compared with traditional imaging agents. Their small size and expansive surface area make them suitable for drug delivery systems, enabling the effective incorporation of therapeutic substances. By functionalizing BPQDs with targeting ligands, they can selectively bind to cancer cells or tissue, making them ideal for targeted therapies. Moreover, BPQDs can serve as biosensors to detect biomarkers in bodily fluids, further expanding their biomedical applications. However, before they can be successfully translated into clinical settings, further research is needed to optimize the synthesis methods of BPQDs and evaluate their long-term safety profiles. Nonetheless, with ongoing research and development, the medical uses of BPQDs are expected to expand.

Potential nanomedicinal applications and physicochemical nature of Hyphaene thebaica-reduced nano-samaria.

Herein we described the biofabrication of samarium oxide nanoparticles (HT-Sm2O3 NPs) by applying the aqueous fruit extract of Hyphaene thebaica was utilized as an eco-friendly chelating agent. The prepared NPs were subjected to various physicochemical properties and potential in biomedical applications. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) pattern revealed sharp peaks that corroborated with the Joint Committee on Powder Diffraction Standards (JCPDS) card no. 00-042-1464. Crystallite size obtained from Debye-Scherrer approximation and Williamson-Hall (W-H) plot was 28.73 and 69.3 nm, respectively. Optical bandgap was calculated by employing Kubelka-Munk (K-M) function and was found to be ~4.58 eV. Raman shift was observed at 121, 351, 424-, and 561 cm-1. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra revealed two major peaks positioned at 360 and 540 nm. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) analysis of HT-Sm2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) showed that they predominantly have spherical to cuboidal shapes. Additionally, the selected area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern presented spotty rings, indicating a high level of crystallinity in these NPs. The potential nanomedicine applications were studied using diverse bioassays using different treatments. The antioxidant activity demonstrated 45.71% ± 1.13% inhibition at 1000 μg/mL. Brine shrimp lethality assay revealed the highest cytotoxicity of 46.67% ± 3.33% at 1000 μg/mL and LC50 value of 1081 μg/mL. HT-Sm2O3 NPs exhibited inhibition of angiogenesis (20.41% ± 1.18%) at of 1000 μg/mL. MTT assay results indicated that HT-Sm2O3 NPs exhibit inhibitory effects on cell lines. Specifically, these NPs showed an IC50 value of 104.6 μg/mL against 3T3 cells. Against MCF-7 cells, the NPs demonstrated an IC50 value of 413.25 μg/mL. Additionally, in the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), the newly synthesized NPs showed an IC50 value of 320 μg/mL. The antidiabetic assessment through α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibition assays revealed, an IC50 value of 380 μg/mL for α-glucosidase and 952 μg/mL for α-amylase was calculated. Overall, our study suggested that the Sm2O3 NPs possess moderate anticancer, cholinesterase inhibition, and antidiabetic potential, however, needs further assessment. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: In this work, nano-samaria is synthesized using an eco-friendly and green approach. The nanoparticles were characterized using techniques such as Raman, HR-TEM, FTIR, DRS, XRD, and so on, and the applications were studied using multiple in vitro bioassays for Diabetes, Alzheimer, and Cancer. The nano-samaria revealed good potential for potential biomedical applications.

Antibacterial Mechanism of d-Cysteine/Polyethylene Glycol-Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles and Their Potential for the Treatment of Bacterial Infections.

Bacterial infection has always posed a severe threat to public health. Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) exhibit exceptional biocompatibility and hold immense potential in biomedical applications. However, their antibacterial effectiveness is currently unsatisfactory. Herein, a chiral antibacterial agent with high stability was prepared by the modification of Au NPs with d-cysteine with the assistance of polyethylene glycol (PEG). The as-synthesized d-cysteine/PEG-Au NPs (D/P-Au NPs) exhibited a stronger (99.5-99.9%) and more stable (at least 14 days) antibacterial performance against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes) and Gram-positive (Salmonella enteritidis and Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria, compared with other groups. The analysis of the antibacterial mechanism revealed that the D/P-Au NPs mainly affected the assembly of ribosomes, the biosynthesis of amino acids and proteins, as well as the DNA replication and mismatch repair, ultimately leading to bacterial death, which is significantly different from the mechanism of reactive oxygen species-activated metallic antibacterial NPs. In particular, the D/P-Au NPs were shown to effectively accelerate the healing of S. aureus-infected wounds in mice to a rate comparable to or slightly higher than that of vancomycin. This work provides a novel approach to effectively design chiral antibacterial agents for bacterial infection treatment.

Preparation and Characterization of Biowaste Derived Zn, Sr Co‐substituted HAP/Lignin Biocomposite for Potential Biomedical Applications

AbstractThis present study deals with the facile synthesis of Zinc (Zn), Strontium (Sr) Co‐substituted hydroxyapatite (M‐HAP)/lignin composite for biomedical applications. For composite formation, HAP was isolated from egg shell through wet precipitation method, biopolymer of lignin was extracted from neem wood through organosolve technique then HAP composites (HAP, HAP/lignin, Zn‐HAP/lignin, Sr‐HAP/lignin, Zn, Sr‐HAP/lignin) were obtained using freeze drying performance. The synthesized HAP composites were characterized using X‐ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy‐dispersive X‐ray analysis (EDAX). The antibacterial behavior of the HAP composites was investigated against E. Coli, B. Subtilies, P. Aeruginosa and S. Aureus pathogens. Then the mechanical property of the HAP composites was carried out using Vicker's microhardness test which reveals a better improvement in mechanical hardness. The antibacterial activity confirms that the HAP composite exhibits enhanced antibacterial activity. Further, the cell viability analysis shows that the co‐substitution of Zn and Sr in HAP lattice improved cell viability analysis, which indicates that the obtained Zn, Sr co‐substituted HAP/lignin biocomposite acts as a potential biomaterial for better biomedical application.

Fabrication and characterization of multi-layered coaxial agar-based electrospun biocomposite mat, novel replacement for transdermal patches

In the performed study, a novel fabrication of agar-based nanofibers was electrospun in an asymmetric bilayer dressing for biomedical transdermal patches. The optimal parameters for the fabrication of agar-based nanofibers after optimization were a feed rate of 10 μL/min, a 7 cm collector-to-nozzle distance, a 15 kV applied voltage, and a 700-rpm rotating collector speed. Coaxial nanofibers, as a second asymmetric layer, were produced using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with cephalexin hydrate, an antibacterial drug, as the core and agar-PCL as the sheath. The morphology of the developed uniaxial and coaxial nanofibrous layers was analysed using a scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. For the formation of bilayer asymmetric structures, the agar-PCL uniaxial layer was fabricated over the layer of coaxial PVA and agar-PCL layers for sustained drug release. The agar-based nanofibrous mats exhibited tensile strength of 7 MPa with 40 % elongation failure, 8-fold increased swelling, enhanced wettability (60° contact angle), and a moisture transmission rate of 2174 g/m2/day. The developed coaxial bilayer mats exhibited antimicrobial activity, hemocompatibility, and cytocompatibility. Overall, this novel agar nanofibrous dressing offers promising potential for advanced biomedical applications, particularly as transdermal patches for efficient drug delivery systems.

Sol-gel derived ternary CrxCuCx-1 compounds: Characterization, structural insights and biological properties

This research explores a novel method for synthesizing Cr-Cu-C ternary carbide using a sol-gel technique. The study targeted to produce a wide range of transition metal carbides within the Cr-Cu-C system by varying the elemental ratios. The primary goal was to observe how compositional changes affect the morphological, structural, and chemical properties of the resulting ternary compounds resembling the MAX phase. Another focus is to establish a practical synthesis route and evaluating the materials' suitability for different applications. The synthesis process involved combining metal nitrates and citric acid, followed by carbothermal reduction. Comprehensive characterization techniques, including FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX, XPS, and Raman spectroscopy, were employed to thoroughly recognize the prepared materials. In XRD, the calculated lattice parameters indicated hexagonal structures for all the prepared ratios, confirming successful synthesis and providing insights into their morphological and chemical properties. This has also been supported with other characterization techniques, Additionally, the Cr-Cu-C materials demonstrated strong antifungal and antibacterial effects against Candida albicans, E. coli, and B. cereus, highlighting their potential for biomedical applications. Furthermore, their anti-cancer potential against HepG2 liver cancer cells was assessed, showing effectiveness and inhibition among the samples. These findings highlight the potential of the synthesized Cr-Cu-C materials in diverse biomedical applications, supported by their structural integrity, morphological features, and antimicrobial properties.

Formation of a protective oxides-nitrides compound layer with enhanced wear properties, corrosion resistance, and cytocompatibility on novel Ti-Zr-Nb-Ta-Mo multi-principal element alloy

The insufficient surface properties of multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) hinder their potential biomedical applications. Here, a facile thermal oxidation plus nitridation treatment is conducted to fabricate a protective layer on a novel Ti-Zr-Nb-Ta-Mo MPEA. The total surface layer of NT5-ON consists of a top compound layer, including TiO2, TiN, TiON, ZrO2, and ZrN, and an underneath N-diffusion zone, leading to an exceptionally high wear performance. Also, electrochemical testing and in-vitro evaluations demonstrated enhanced corrosion resistance and cytocompatibility of NT5-ON. As a result, thermal oxidation plus nitridation treatment is an effective technique for designing high-performance hip implant materials.

Injectable pH- and Ultrasound-Responsive Dual-Crosslinked Dextran/Chitosan/TiO2 Nanocomposite Hydrogels for Antibacterial Applications.

Combining exogenous and endogenous antibacterial mechanisms has been demonstrated to enhance therapeutic efficacy significantly. This study constructs an innovative type of exogenous and endogenous antibacterial nanocomposite hydrogels with injectable dual-crosslinked networks and dual-stimuli responsiveness. The primary network establishes imine bonds between the functionalized dextran featuring norbornenes and aldehydes (NorAld-Dex) and the quaternized chitosan (QCS). The imine bonds provide self-healing, injectability, and pH-responsiveness to the hydrogel network. The secondary network is established by integrating thiolated mesoporous silica-coated titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2@MS-SH) into the hydrogel network via an ultrasound-activated thiol-norbornene reaction with NorAld-Dex. The microstructures and properties of NorAld-Dex/QCS/TiO2@MS-SH hydrogels can be fine-tuned by adjusting the sonication time to increase the amount of thiol-norbornene crosslinks in the network. Effective antibacterial performance of NorAld-Dex/QCS/TiO2@MS-SH hydrogels at low pH has been demonstrated with the synergistic effect of the acid-induced dissociation of the hydrogel network, protonated QCS, and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by TiO2@MS-SH nanoparticles under ultrasound irradiation. In summary, NorAld-Dex/QCS/TiO2@MS-SH nanocomposite hydrogel is an advanced dual stimuli-responsive antibacterial platform with customizable microstructures and properties, offering great potential for biomedical applications.

Synthesis and characterization of chromium aluminum carbide MAX phases (CrxAlCx-1) for potential biomedical applications.

MAX phases, characterized as nanolaminates of ternary carbides/nitrides structure, possess a unique combination of ceramic and metallic properties, rendering them pivotal in materials research. In this study, chromium aluminum carbide ternary compounds, Cr2AlC (211), Cr3AlC2 (312), and Cr4AlC3 (413) were successfully synthesized with high purity using a facile and cost-effective sol-gel method. Structural, morphological, and chemical characterization of the synthesized phases was conducted to understand the effects of composition changes and explore potential applications. Comprehensive characterization techniques including XRD for crystalline structure elucidations, SEM for morphological analysis, EDX for chemical composition, Raman spectroscopy for elucidation of vibrational modes, XPS to analyze elemental composition and surface chemistry, and FTIR spectroscopy to ensure the functional groups analysis, were performed. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated the high purity of the synthesized Cr2AlC phase as well as other ternary compounds Cr3AlC2 and Cr4AlC3, suggesting its suitability as a precursor for MXenes production. Additionally, the antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans and biocompatibility assessments against Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and HepG2 cell line were investigated. The results demonstrated significant antifungal activity of the synthesized phases against Candida albicans and negligible impact on the viability of E. coli and S. aureus. Interestingly, lower concentrations of Cr2AlC MAX phase induced cytotoxicity in HepG2 cells by triggering intercellular oxidative stress, while Cr3AlC2 and Cr4AlC3 exhibited lower cytotoxicity compared to Cr2AlC, highlighting their potential in biomedical applications.

Highly Adaptive Kirigami-Metastructure Adhesive with Vertically Self-Aligning Octopus-like 3D Suction Cups for Efficient Wet Adhesion to Complexly Curved Surfaces.

An essential requirement for biomedical devices is the capability of conformal adaptability on diverse irregular 3D (three-dimensional) nonflat surfaces in the human body that may be covered with liquids such as mucus or sweat. However, the development of reversible adhesive interface materials for biodevices that function on complex biological surfaces is challenging due to the wet, slippery, smooth, and curved surface properties. Herein, we present an ultra-adaptive bioadhesive for irregular 3D oral cavities covered with saliva by integrating a kirigami-metastructure and vertically self-aligning suction cups. The flared suction cup, inspired by octopus tentacles, allows adhesion to moist surfaces. Additionally, the kirigami-based auxetic metastructure with a negative Poisson's ratio relieves the stress caused by tensile strain, thereby mitigating the stress caused by curved surfaces and enabling conformal contact with the surface. As a result, the adhesive strength of the proposed auxetic adhesive is twice that of adhesives with a flat backbone on highly curved porcine palates. For potential application, the proposed auxetic adhesive is mounted on a denture and performs successfully in human subject feasibility evaluations. An integrated design of these two structures may provide functionality and potential for biomedical applications.

Characterization and optimization of a biomaterial ink aided by machine learning-assisted parameter suggestion

Bio-inks and biomaterial inks are crucial to the success of 3D bioprinting, as they form the foundation of almost every 3D bio-printed structure. Despite the use of various biomaterial inks with potential biomedical applications in 3D printing, developing printable biomaterial inks for extrusion-based 3D bioprinting remains a major challenge in additive manufacturing. To be effective, the inks must possess suitable mechanical properties, high biocompatibility, and the ability to print precisely. In this study, machine learning (ML) was employed to develop a chitosan-gelatin-agarose biomaterial ink. The ink's printability, rheological properties, hydrophilicity, degradability, and biological response were evaluated after an optimization process. The optimized ink exhibited adequate viscosity for reliable printing, and 3D structures were created to assess printability and shape integrity. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (BMSCs) were cultured on the ink's surface, and cell adhesion, growth, and morphology were assessed. Results showed favorable cell morphology, and cell viability within the optimized ink. The ink consisting of 27 % agarose, 53 % chitosan, and 20 % gelatin (ACG), may be a suitable biomaterial for fabricating 3D complex tissue constructs.

Exploring the antimicrobial and antioxidant potential of bacterial cellulose-cerium oxide nanoparticles hydrogel: Design, characterization and biomedical properties

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a promising natural polymer prized for its biocompatibility, microporosity, transparency, conformability, elasticity, and ability to maintain a moist wound environment while absorbing exudates. These attributes make BC an attractive material in biomedical applications, particularly in skin tissue repair. However, its lack of inherent antimicrobial activity limits its effectiveness. In this study, BC was enhanced by incorporating cerium (IV)-oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles, resulting in a series of bacterial cellulose-CeO2 (BC-CeO2) composite materials. Characterization via FESEM, XRD, and FTIR confirmed the successful synthesis of the composites. Notably, BC-CeO2-1 exhibited no cytotoxic or genotoxic effects on peripheral blood lymphocytes, and it additionally protected cells from genotoxic and cytotoxic effects in H2O2-treated cultures. Redox parameters in blood plasma samples displayed concentration and time-dependent trends in PAB and LPP assays. The incorporation of CeO2 nanoparticles also bolstered antimicrobial activity, expanding the potential biomedical applications of these composites.

The application of graphene oxide and ferroptosis in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer: a narrative review.

Colorectal cancer (CRC), a leading global malignancy, continues to challenge the medical community. Despite advancements in surgical, chemotherapeutic, radiation, targeted, and immunotherapeutic strategies, issues like resistance and side effects persist. This review illuminates the potential of ferroptosis, an emerging non-apoptotic cell death form, and graphene oxide (GO), with its distinctive physicochemical properties, in CRC therapy. The databases search included PubMed, Medline and Web of Science. Search terms focused on CRC, graphene, GO, ferroptosis, and related aspects in therapy and drug delivery. The time frame for literature retrieval was up to April 2024. Studies in languages other than English were excluded. Ferroptosis has been recognized for its role in addressing treatment resistance, a notable hurdle in effective CRC management. This form of cell death offers a promising avenue for enhancing the effectiveness of existing treatments. However, understanding its mechanisms and clinical implications in CRC remains an area of active research, with significant progress required for its practical application. Simultaneously, GO, a versatile two-dimensional material, has demonstrated substantial potential in biomedical applications, especially in cancer therapy. Its high specific surface area and unique π-electron domains facilitate the effective binding of chemotherapy drugs, target genes, and photosensitizers. This makes GO a promising candidate in cancer diagnosis and treatment, particularly through tumor photothermal and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Despite these advancements, GO's clinical application faces challenges, including in vitro cytotoxicity and decreased biodegradability, necessitating further research. This review focuses on the characteristics of GO and ferroptosis, as well as their applications in tumor diagnosis and treatment, with a particular emphasis on their potential in CRC.

Fabrication of Novel Nanofiber Patch Containing BoerhaviaDiffusa Extract for Wound Healing Application Using Response Surface Methodology

In this study, we successfully prepared a Boerhavia diffusa extract-loaded nanofiber wound dressing using the electrospinning method, optimizing the process through a 3x2 factorial design. The optimized nanofiber, denoted as BRNF7, exhibited excellent characteristics, including an entrapment efficiency of 85.12% and a drug loading of 9%. Furthermore, the swelling index was measured at 86.6, demonstrating its potential as an effective wound dressing material. Characterization of the BRNF7 nanofiber revealed promising results, as FTIR spectra exhibited all the expected peaks, while XRD analysis indicated a highly crystalline structure with intense peaks. DSC thermograms displayed a characteristic peak at 133.42°C, corresponding to Boerhavia diffusa extract. Thermal analysis, as indicated by TGA thermograms, showed that the nanofiber gradually decomposed at a higher temperature range, signifying its thermal stability. Wound dressing various parameter included as the film thickness ranged from 0.069 to 0.074 mm, and all films exhibited excellent folding endurance, ensuring flexibility. Moisture interaction studies demonstrated good physical stability of the film under high humidity conditions and maintained integrity under dry conditions. The films exhibited a moisture absorption range of 3.8% to 4.6% and a moisture loss range of 3.2% to 4.7%. Tensile strength values ranged from 2.14 to 2.85 kg/cm², and the percentage of drug content was uniform between 90.15% and 92.11%.Furthermore, our Boerhavia diffusa extract-loaded Nanofibrous dressing displayed notable antibacterial activity against various pathogens and exhibited promising wound-healing effects, making it a potential candidate for advanced wound care. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the BRNF7 nanofiber, emphasizing its potential in biomedical applications.

Synthesis and Evaluation of Gelatin-Chitosan Biofilms Incorporating Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles and 5-Fluorouracil for Cancer Treatment.

In this study, a novel multifunctional biofilm was fabricated using a straightforward casting process. The biofilm comprised gelatin, chitosan, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-conjugated zinc oxide nanoparticles, and polyvinyl alcohol plasticized with glycerol. The 5-FU-conjugated nanoparticles were synthesized via a single-step co-precipitation process, offering a unique approach. Characterization confirmed successful drug conjugation, revealing bar-shaped nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 90 to 100 nm. Drug release kinetics followed the Korsmeyer-Peppas model, indicating controlled release behavior. Maximum swelling ratio studies of the gelatin-chitosan film showed pH-dependent characteristics, highlighting its versatility. Comprehensive analysis using SEM, FT-IR, Raman, and EDX spectra confirmed the presence of gelatin, chitosan, and 5-FU/ZnO nanoparticles within the biofilms. These biofilms exhibited non-cytotoxicity to human fibroblasts and significant anticancer activity against skin cancer cells, demonstrating their potential for biomedical applications. This versatility positions the 5-FU/ZnO-loaded sheets as promising candidates for localized topical patches in skin and oral cancer treatment, underscoring their practicality and adaptability for therapeutic applications.

Mechanical Properties of Additively Manufactured Polymeric Materials-PLA and PETG-For Biomechanical Applications.

The study presented herein concerns the mechanical properties of two common polymers for potential biomedical applications, PLA and PETG, processed through fused filament fabrication (FFF)-Material Extrusion (ME). For the uniaxial tension tests carried out, two printing orientations-XY (Horizontal, H) and YZ (Vertical, V)-were considered according to the general principles for part positioning, coordinates, and orientation typically used in additive manufacturing (AM). In addition, six specimens were tested for each printing orientation and material, providing insights into mechanical properties such as Tensile Strength, Young's Modulus, and Ultimate Strain, suggesting the materials' potential for biomedical applications. The experimental results were then compared with correspondent mechanical properties obtained from the literature for other polymers like ASA, PC, PP, ULTEM 9085, Copolyester, and Nylon. Thereafter, fatigue resistance curves (S-N curves) for PLA and PETG, printed along 45°, were determined at room temperature for a load ratio, R, of 0.2. Scanning electron microscope observations revealed fibre arrangements, compression/adhesion between layers, and fracture zones, shedding light on the failure mechanisms involved in the fatigue crack propagation of such materials and giving design reference values for future applications. In addition, fractographic analyses of the fatigue fracture surfaces were carried out, as well as X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) and Thermogravimetric (TGA)/Differential Scanning Calorimetric (DSC) tests.

Designing Dual-Responsive Drug Delivery Systems: The Role of Phase Change Materials and Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems (DDSs) offer precise control over drug release, enhancing therapeutic efficacy and minimizing side effects. This review focuses on DDSs that leverage the unique capabilities of phase change materials (PCMs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to achieve controlled drug release in response to pH and temperature changes. Specifically, this review highlights the use of a combination of lauric and stearic acids as PCMs that melt slightly above body temperature, providing a thermally responsive mechanism for drug release. Additionally, this review delves into the properties of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), a stable MOF under physiological conditions that decomposes in acidic environments, thus offering pH-sensitive drug release capabilities. The integration of these materials enables the fabrication of complex structures that encapsulate drugs within ZIF-8 or are enveloped by PCM layers, ensuring that drug release is tightly controlled by either temperature or pH levels, or both. This review provides comprehensive insights into the core design principles, material selections, and potential biomedical applications of dual-stimuli responsive DDSs, highlighting the future directions and challenges in this innovative field.
