Benzopyrene elimination from the environment using graphitic carbon nitride-SnS nanocomposites

Benzopyrene (BaP) stands as a potent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecule, boasting five fused aromatic rings, making its way into the human food chain through soil contamination. The persistent environmental presence of PAHs in soil, attributed to industrial exposure, is primarily due to their low molecular weight and hydrophobic nature. To preemptively address the entry of BaP into the food chain, the application of nanocomposites was identified as an effective remediation strategy. Post-synthesis, comprehensive characterization tests employing techniques such as UV-DRS, XRD, SEM-EDX, FTIR, and DLS unveiled the distinctive features of the g–C3N4–SnS nanocomposites. These nanocomposites exhibited spherical shapes embedded on layers of nanosheets, boasting particle diameters measuring 88.9 nm. Subsequent tests were conducted to assess the efficacy of eliminating benzopyrene from a combination of PAH molecules and g–C3N4–SnS nanocomposites. Varied parameters, including PAH concentration, adsorbent dosage, and suspension pH, were systematically explored. The optimized conditions for the efficient removal of BaP utilizing the g–C3N4–SnS nanocomposite involved 2 μg/mL of benzopyrene, 10 μg/mL of the nanocomposite, and a pH of 5, considering UV light as the irradiation source. The investigation into the mechanism governing BaP elimination closely aligned with batch adsorption results involved a thorough exploration of adsorption kinetics and isotherms. Photocatalytic degradation of benzopyrene was achieved, reaching a maximum of 86 % in 4 h and 36 % in 2 h, with g–C3N4–SnS nanocomposite acting as the catalyst. Further validation through HPLC data confirmed the successful removal of BaP from the soil matrix.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon by graphitic carbonitride-nickel (g–C3N4–Ni) nanocomposite

The objective of the present study is to synthesize g-C3N4–Ni nanocomposites composed of graphitic carbon nitride and magnetic nickel nanoparticles for benzopyrene degradation, which is one of the most potent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) molecules. The concocted g-C3N4–Ni nanocomposites contained confined nanospheres with a mean particle dimension of 22 nm. Batch adsorption studies revealed that a rise in adsorbent dosage elevates benzopyrene degradation percentage in both water and soil samples with respect to time. The increase in the benzopyrene concentration did not have much influence on the degradation efficiency, and hence, the minimal concentration of PAH molecule is essential for the effective adsorption by g-C3N4–Ni nanocomposites. The rise in pH tends to increase the degradation of Benzopyrene till 3 h of the incubation period, and beyond 3 h, the degradation percentage declines. With regard to the effect of light source, UV light has been shown to accelerate the degradation of benzopyrene by g-C3N4–Ni nanocomposites than sunlight. The adsorption kinetic and isotherm investigations have proven that the Pseudo-second order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model were appropriate for our study. Thus, the g-C3N4–Ni nanocomposites were found to be efficient as a photocatalyst for the adsorption of benzopyrene from environmental samples.

Community pattern of potential phenanthrene (PHE) degrading bacteria in PHE contaminated soil revealed by 13C-DNA stable isotope probing

Quantification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated soil and identification of potential PAH degraders are essential for comprehending their environmental fate and conducting bioremediation. However, the microbial population responsible for the breakdown of phenanthrene (PHE) in polluted soil environments is frequently disregarded. In this study, via DNA-stable-isotope probing (DNA-SIP), we found that soil microbiota likely plays a crucial part in the PHE degradation. The PHE removal rates were 98% and 99%, in 13C-PHE and 12C-PHE microcosmic incubations, respectively. 13CO2 was produced along with the degradation of 13C-PHE. According to the analysis of 16S rRNA gene, there was a relatively higher presence of unidentified bacteria in the ‘heavy’ DNA fractions treated with 13C-PHE. Genus of Enterobacteriales, Acidobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, Paenibacillaceae, Flavobacteriia, Chloroflexi, Cyanobacteria, Caldilineae, Latescibacteria, Armatimonadetes and Blastocatellia were succseesfully labeled during the degradation of 13C-PHE, indicating their capacity of utilizing PHE. Co-occurrence network of 13C-heavy fractions exhibited greater complexity compared with that of 12C-heavy fractions, revealling an enhancement of bacterial interspecies interactions. Collectivley, this study eluidated the soil microbes involed in the PHE degradation and offered fresh perspectives on the community pattern of potential PHE degrading bacteria.

Surfactant-enhanced anoxic degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in aged subsurface soil at high temperature (60 °C)

Thermally enhanced anoxic biodegradation is emerging as a promising method for removing PAHs from subsurface soil. However, some PAHs still remain in soil following remediation with thermally enhanced anoxic degradation due to low bioavailability of these residual PAHs. The effects of five surfactants (Tween 80, TX 100, Brij 30, SDS, and SDBS) on the desorption of PAHs, anoxic degradation of PAHs, and native bacteria in soil at high temperature (60 °C) were evaluated in this study. The desorption of PAHs in soil increased as surfactant concentration increased. Low doses of surfactants (0.08%, w/w) enhanced the growth of potential PAHs degrading bacteria and promoted the anoxic degradation of PAHs, whereas high doses of surfactants (0.3%–0.8%, w/w) displayed the opposite effect, and the degree of inhibition increased with increasing surfactant concentration. The results also indicated that the inhibitory effect of anionic surfactants (SDS and SDBS) on microbial growth and PAHs degradation is stronger than that of nonionic surfactants (Tween 80, TX 100 and Brij 30) at the same concentration. These results suggest a feasible way of enhancing the anoxic degradation of PAHs in soil where heat cannot be effectively utilized when in situ thermal desorption (ISTD) technology is used.

Distribution and biodegradation potential of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) accumulated in media of a stormwater bioretention

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of organic compounds that can be captured and accumulate in the bioretention cell media, which may lead to secondary pollution and ecological risks. This research aimed to understand the spatial distribution of 16 priority PAHs in bioretention media, identify their sources, evaluate their ecological impact, and assess the potential for their aerobic biodegradation. The highest total PAH concentration (25.5 ± 1.7 μg/g) was observed 1.83 m from the inlet and 10–15 cm deep. The individual PAHs with the highest concentrations were benzo [g,h,i]perylene in February (1.8 ± 0.8 μg/g) and pyrene in June (1.8 ± 0.8 μg/g). Data indicated that primary sources of PAHs were fossil fuel combustion and petroleum. The ecological impact and toxicity of the media were assessed by probable effect concentrations (PECs) and benzo [a]pyrene total toxicity equivalent (BaP-TEQ). The results showed that the concentrations of pyrene and chrysene exceeded the PECs, and the average BaP-TEQ was 1.64 μg/g, primarily caused by benzo [a]pyrene. The functional gene (C12O) of PAH-ring cleaving dioxygenases (PAH-RCD) was present in the surface media, which indicated that aerobic biodegradation of PAHs was possible. Overall, this study revealed the PAHs accumulated most at medium distance and depth, where biodegradation may be limited. Thus, the accumulation of PAHs below the surface of the bioretention cell may need to be considered during long-term operation and maintenance.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Air and Dust Samples from Vietnamese End-of-life Vehicle Processing Workshops: Contamination Status, Sources, and Exposure Risks.

Concentrations of 18 unsubstituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 11 methylated derivatives (Me-PAHs) were measured in polyurethane foam-based passive air (PUF-PAS) and settled dust samples collected from end-of-life vehicle (ELV) processing workshops in northern Vietnam. Concentrations of total 29 PAHs ranged from 42 to 95 (median 57) ng/m3 and from 860 to 18,000 (median 5700) ng/g in air and dust samples, respectively. PAH levels in ELV air and dust samples were 1.5 ± 0.4 and 9.4 ± 7.9 times higher than levels found in a control house, suggesting ELV processing as potential PAH emission sources. Concentrations and proportions of Me-PAHs in total PAHs of the ELV air (26% ± 7%) and dust (41% ± 14%) were higher than those found in control house (18% in both air and dust). The occurrence of PAHs and Me-PAHs in the ELV workshops are attributed to not only pyrogenic but also petrogenic sources (i.e., improper treatment and management of fuels, lubricants, and vehicle oils).

Shewanella azerbaijanica sp. nov. a novel aquatic species with high bioremediation abilities.

A novel Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, rod-shaped, and non-motile bacterium with bio-degradation potential of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and uranium bio-reduction, designated as RCRI7T, was isolated from Qurugöl Lake water near Tabriz city. Strain RCRI7T can grow in the absence of NaCl and tolerates up to 3% NaCl (optimum, 0-0.5%), at the temperature range of 4-45°C (optimum, 30°C) and a pH range of 6-9 (optimum, pH 7 ± 0.5). Results of phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain RCRI7T is affiliated with the genus Shewanella, most closely related to Shewanella xiamenensis S4T (99.1%) and Shewanella putrefaciens JCM 20190T (98.9%). The genomic DNA G+C content of strain RCRI7T is 41mol%. The major fatty acids are C16:1ω9c, C18:1ω9c and iso-C17:1ω5c. The OrthoANI and ANIb values between RCRI7T and Shewanella xiamenensis S4T were 87.4% and 87.7%, and between RCRI7T and Shewanella putrefaciens JCM 20190T were 79.5% and 79.7%, respectively. Strain RCRI7T displayed dDDH values of 30.2% and 39.8% to Shewanella xiamenensis S4T and Shewanella putrefaciens JCM 20190T, respectively. The major polar lipids include phosphatidylglycerol (PG) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE). The respiratory quinone is Q8. Based on the polyphasic evidence presented in this paper, strain RCRI7T is considered to represent a novel species, with bioremediation potential, in the genus Shewanella, for which the name Shewanella azerbaijanica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is RCRI7T (= JCM 17276T) (= KCTC 62476T).

In Silico Insights on the Pro-Inflammatory Potential of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and the Prospective Anti-Inflammatory Capacity of Andrographis paniculata Phytocompounds.

Inflammation linked to various diseases is the biological response to certain stimuli. The pro-inflammatory potential of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) as potential inducers of inflammation bound to the Toll-like Receptor 4 (TLR4) and the anti-inflammatory capacity of A. paniculata (AP) phytocompounds as prospective inhibitors of the Nuclear Factor Kappa B (NF-κB) p50 transcription factor are investigated via in silico techniques. The molecular docking of the PAHs and AP phytocompounds is performed in AutoDock Vina by calculating their binding energies. The molecular dynamics simulations (MDS) of the apo and ligand-bound complex of the top binding ligands were performed in CABS-flex. The agonists, which included the PAHs indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene (IP), and dibenz(a,h)anthracene (DahA), had the highest binding energies of −10 kcal/mol and −9.2 kcal/mol, respectively. The most stable antagonists in the binding site with binding energies to the NF-κB p50 were the AP phytocompounds with −5.6 kcal/mol for ergosterol peroxide and −5.3 kcal/mol for 14-deoxy-14,15-dehydroandrographolide. The MDS of the apo human TLR4 and PAH-bound TLR4, and the apo p50 and the AP phytocompound-bound NF-κB p50 showed minimal fluctuations. These results reveal that IP and DahA are significant inducers of inflammation, whereas ergosterol peroxide and 14-deoxy-14,15-dehydroandrographolide are inhibitors of the NF-κB pathway. Furthermore, the study theorizes that any inflammatory activity induced by PAH can be potentially inhibited by A. paniculata phytocompounds.

In Silico Approach in the Evaluation of Pro-Inflammatory Potential of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Volatile Organic Compounds through Binding Affinity to the Human Toll-Like Receptor 4.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are widespread across the globe, existing in the environment in complex mixtures potentially capable of initiating respiratory illnesses. Here, we use an in silico approach to evaluate the potential pro-inflammatory effects of various carcinogenic PAHs and VOCs through their binding affinity towards the human toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). For receptors and ligands, RCSB Protein Data Bank and PubChem were used in obtaining their 3D structures, respectively. Autodock Vina was utilized to obtain the best docking poses and binding affinities of each PAH and VOC. Out of the 14 PAHs included in this study, indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene, benzo(ghi)perylene, and benzo[a]pyrene had the highest binding affinity values of −10, −9, and −8.9 kcal/mol, respectively. For the VOCs, out of the 10 compounds studied, benzene, 1,4-dichlorobenzene, and styrene had the highest binding affinity values of −3.6, −3.9, and −4.6 kcal/mol, respectively. Compounds with higher affinity than LPS (−4.1 kcal/com) could potentially induce inflammation, while compounds with lower affinity would be less likely to induce an inflammatory response. Meanwhile, molecular dynamics simulation and RMSF statistical analysis proved that the protein, TLR4, stably preserve its conformation despite ligand interactions. Overall, the structure of the TLR4 was considered inflexible.

Source apportionment and health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the coastal ecosystem of the Brunei Bay, Brunei

Pollution characteristics and associated ecological risks of PAHs in sediments from Brunei Bay, Brunei were investigated. The concentrations of ∑16 PAHs ranged from 826.7 to 2955.3 μg kg−1, indicating moderate to high level of pollution. Source apportionment of PAHs by molecular isomeric ratios and positive matrix factorization model indicated impact of potential anthropogenic PAH sources including combustion of biomass and fossil fuels. The data indicated relatively no significant ecotoxicological risk for most of PAH compounds. To estimate the individual c-PAH toxicity, the toxic equivalent quantity (c-TEQ) was calculated. Results of the TEQ analysis showed that BaP followed by DBA and BaA are the most carcinogenic of PAHs examined in the study area. The evaluation of human health risk of PAHs revealed that the cancer risk of PAHs for adults and children was higher than the USEPA threshold (<1E−06) and lower than 1E-3, implying low to moderate risk.

Contamination level, sources, and health risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in suburban vegetable field soils of Changchun, Northeast China

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants. With the expansion of the city, the suburban environment is being increasingly polluted by PAHs, which pose a huge potential risk for suburban agriculture. Therefore, we conducted a survey focusing on the pollution level, sources, and risk of PAHs in Changchun suburban vegetable soils, Northeast China. The total concentrations of 16 PAHs (Σ16PAHs) in soils were between 2338.2 and 15,200 ng g−1 (mean 6778.1 ng g−1), which were significantly higher than those in most other cities. High molecular weight PAHs were the major components, which occupied over 85.63% of all PAHs. Seven potential carcinogenic PAHs accounted for 56.96% of the Σ16PAHs. Source apportionment results based on the ratio of PAH isomers and principal components analysis showed that PAHs were primarily derived from pyrolysis sources, such as biomass/coal combustion, traffic emissions, and petroleum. Ecological risk values of PAHs were between effects range-low (ERL) and effects range-median (ERM), which might cause occasionally ecological risks in the suburbs. According to the incremental lifetime cancer risk assessment results, the health risks to the exposed population were in the acceptable level, with dermal contact and ingestion being the predominant exposure pathway.

Desorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from polyethylene microplastics in two morphologically different digestive tracts of marine teleosts: Gastric red seabream (Pagrus major) and agastric mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus)

In this study, we elucidated the desorption potency of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) sorbed on microplastics (MP; polyethylene) in the digestive tract of two fish species: gastric red seabream and agastric mummichog. In our in vitro assay system using the real gut sample of unexposed fish, the digestive tract was firstly removed from the fish and divided into three parts. Then, MP that had previously been sorbed with 16 PAHs were incubated with extracts of the gut contents or tissue with buffer or only a buffer. The desorption potency of PAHs was individually assessed for gut contents and tissue, which revealed that PAH desorption from MP was elevated in extracts of the gut contents compared with that in the buffer alone for both fish species. PAH desorption potency was the highest in the midgut for gastric red seabream and in the foregut for agastric mummichog, which indicates that PAH desorption from MP varies among different parts of the digestive tract and among fish with distinct gut morphology. In the midgut contents of red seabream and foregut contents of mummichog, the desorption fraction was 5.6% and 8.1% of the total PAHs sorbed on MP, respectively. The desorption fraction enhancement achieved by adding gut contents extracts tended to be greater with an increase in the n-octanol/water partition ratio, suggesting that enhancement of the desorption fraction in the digestive tract depends on the physicochemical properties of PAHs. Thus, morphological differences in digestive tracts and PAH properties should be considered when evaluating the effect of MP vector on pollutant exposure in fish.

Dermal Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Baby Diapers: A Re-Evaluation of the Quantitative Health Risk Assessment Conducted by The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES).

In January 2019, the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES) published an opinion on risks related to the presence of hazardous chemicals in infant diapers. ANSES found that health reference values were largely exceeded for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dioxins (PCCD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorobiphenyls (DL-PCBs). The levels of formaldehyde and some fragrances were also considered potentially unsafe. Therefore, ANSES concluded that actions have to be taken to restrict levels of these contaminants in diapers. Under the exposure scenario deemed the most reliable by ANSES, estimates of cancer risks of the most potent PAHs detected in diapers exceeded 10−3 and hazard quotients for neurobehavioral effects attained values up to 66. Regarding dioxins and DL-PCBs, ANSES derived a hazard quotient of 12 for the risk of decreased sperm count at adult age. The aim of this study was to examine whether the exposure and risk assessment conducted by ANSES contained potential flaws that could explain such a high exceedance of health reference values. This study also put into perspective the exposure from diapers with that from breast milk whose benefits for children’s health are undisputable despite contamination by PAHs, dioxins and DL-PCBS.

Drinking water treatment residue recycled to synchronously control the pollution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and phosphorus in sediment from aquatic ecosystems

Great efforts have long been made to control sediment pollution from persistent organic pollutants and phosphorus for aquatic ecosystem restoration. This study proposed a novel recycling of drinking water treatment residue (DWTR) to synchronously control sediment polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phosphorus pollution based on a 350-day incubation test. The results suggested that DWTR addition reduced approximately 88%− 96% of potential bioavailable PAHs and 76% of mobile phosphorus in sediment. The dominant mechanisms for both reductions by DWTR were immobilization, mainly through increasing sediment amorphous aluminum and iron. The tendency of enhanced PAHs degradation by DWTR was also observed, especially for high molecular weight PAHs (e.g., chrysene, indeno(1, 2, 3-cd)pyrene, and benzo(g, hi)perylene), which decreased by approximately 21.1%− 22.0% of the total. Additionally, accompanying a clear increase in the connections of microbial cooccurrence networks, the variations in bioavailable PAHs, amorphous aluminum and iron, and other properties (e.g., pH, nitrogen, and organic matter) significantly (p < 0.01) enhanced Flavobacterium enrichment, although the enrichment of many other microbes potentially related to PAHs degradation (e.g., C1-B045) decreased after DWTR addition. Therefore, DWTR could promote the construction of a “PAHs immobilization with microbial augmentation” system while immobilizing phosphorus in sediment, indicating the high feasibility of controlling multiple sediment pollution.

Assessing genotoxic potential of petroleum refinery wastewater using biomarkers of laboratory exposed and field captured fishes

Petroleum refinery wastes contain mixtures of toxic compounds including Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) which may pose genotoxic threats to the biota. The objective of the present study was to assess the genotoxic potential of wastewaters of the petroleum refinery at Sapugaskanda, Sri Lanka using erythrocytic micronuclei and nuclear abnormalities as genotoxic biomarkers in the fish Oreochromis niloticus exposed to the refinery wastewater under controlled laboratory conditions and in the field captured fishes from the canals close to the refinery. Erythrocytic micronuclei and nuclear abnormalities in the peripheral blood were evaluated using cytogenetic tests. Patterns of fluorescent aromatic compounds in the fish bile were also examined using fixed fluorescence spectrometry to assess potential PAH exposure. Erythrocytic micronuclei, nuclear buds and notched nuclei in the peripheral blood were highly induced (P &lt; 0.05) in O. niloticus exposed to the wastewater for 7 days under laboratory conditions in comparison to the control fish. The field-captured fishes, Trichogaster pectoralis and Dawkinsia singhala inhabiting water canals near the petroleum refinery also demonstrated significant induction (P &lt;0.05) of erythrocytic micronuclei and other nuclear abnormalities. PAH exposure indicative bile fluorescence patterns (naphthalene, phenanthrene, pyrene, and benzo(a)pyrene types) were detected in the fish exposed to the wastewater under laboratory conditions and in the field captured fishes. The results revealed that the wastewater of petroleum refinery contains genotoxic chemicals including PAHs. Hence, incorporation of genotoxicity tests as bioanalytical tools for regulating the discharge of final refinery wastewater to the aquatic ecosystems would be prudent in consideration of sustainable development goals focusing on the ecosystem and human safety.

Biodegradation potential of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Taihu Lake sediments

ABSTRACT To assess the biodegradation potential of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments, sediment microcosms were constructed with sediments collected from six lake zones with different trophic statuses in Taihu Lake. The presence and concentration of PAH-degrading bacteria (PDB) were estimated by the most probable number (MPN) method. After 85 d of aerobic and anaerobic incubation, spiked PAHs (phenanthrene, pyrene, and benzo[a]pyrene) were partially degraded by indigenous sediment microorganisms. Large differences in PAH degradation were observed depending on the molecular size of the PAHs. The PAH removal efficiency in sediments under aerobic conditions was higher than that under anaerobic conditions. MPN analyses showed a higher abundance of degrading microflora in the high PAH-contaminated sites than in the low PAH-contaminated sites. Moreover, the anaerobic PDB populations in the sediments from the six different sites were much higher than those of aerobic PDB. The PAH biodegradation capability in sediments was associated with the geochemical conditions and bacterial populations. PDB showed a broad spatial distribution, thereby implying that they played an important role in the natural attenuation and cycling of PAHs in Taihu Lake. This work indicates that PAHs remain a concern in Taihu Lake sediments and can provide useful information for further bioremediation of PAH-contaminated sediments.

Computational models reveal the potential of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to inhibit aromatase, an important enzyme of the steroid biosynthesis pathway

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread toxic chemicals that may cause endocrine disruption via interaction with aromatase (CYP19A1) which is a vital enzyme of steroid biosynthesis pathway. Herein, we report the optimization of PAHs and oxy-PAHs employing density functional theory (DFT) with B3LYP/3-21G basis set to elucidate their frontier molecular orbitals, Mulliken charges as well as the chemical reactivity descriptors. The DFT outcome revealed that Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene show the lowest HOMO-LUMO gap (3.42 Kcal/mol) as well as highest electrophilicity index and basicity. To assess the structure based inhibitory action of PAHs and their metabolites, these were docked into the active site cavity of CYP19A1. The docking simulation studies predicted that Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene has the least binding energy (-10.76 Kcal/mol) which is in good agreement with the DFT calculations and might serve as a potent inhibitor to CYP19A1 comparable with its known inhibitor, exemestane which has binding affinity −11.73 Kcal/mol. The high binding affinity of oxy-PAHs was attributed to the presence of hydrogen bonds along with different hydrophobic interactions between the pollutant and the critical amino acids residues of the receptor. The results emphasized that PAHs can structurally mimic the binding pattern of exemestane to aromatase.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the non-bleached and bleached corals and their ambient environment: The role of suspended particulate matter, mucus, and positive matrix factorization model for identifying contributions to the carcinogenicity of PAH sources

This study investigates levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the corals (tissue, skeleton, zooxanthellae, mucus) and their ambient environment (surface sediment, seawater, suspended particulate matter (SPM)), with a special focus on SPM and mucus. The Σ37PAH concentrations ranged from 89 to 206 ng g−1 dw in SPM, 52 to 116.1 ng g−1 dw in the sediment and from 18.6 to 91.9 ng L−1 in the seawater. Among the coral components, mucus contained the highest PAH loadings reaching up to 369.2 ng g−1 dw. Coral morphology and pollution of their ambient environment were identified as the main factors affecting the PAH bioaccumulation. Massive corals T. reinformes and P. compressa living in heavier polluted sites accumulated the highest PAH concentrations. Diagnostic ratios provided inconsistent source apportionment results, but positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis identified gasoline/diesel (vehicle) emission (F1), oil spills (F2), coal (F3), and wood (F4) combustion as the main PAHs sources in the study area. Contribution to carcinogenic potencies of PAHs in sediment samples decreased in the following order: F1 > F2 > F3. Factor F4 did not affect the carcinogenic properties of the surface sediment samples but was found to contribute significantly to the TEQBaP values of the SPM samples. The results of this study indicate a direct interaction between SPM and the coral mucus and imply that SPM plays an important role in the pollution transfer and bioaccumulation processes in corals.

Effects of soil organic matter on biochar application in developing the biodegradation potentials of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)

This study investigated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) removal with wheat straw–derived biochar prepared at 500 °C (WS500) in three different petroleum–contaminated soils. Biochar decreased the contents of PAHs, and its effect has been shown to be dependent upon soil type, especially the soil organic matter (SOM). WS500 exhibited strong adsorptive ability towards PAHs in Jingxing (JX) soil, while it enhanced the PAHs removal by adsorption in combination with biodegradation in Luquan (LQ) soil. No significant effect on PAHs removal was observed in WS500–amended Jinzhou (JZ) soil. PAHs with 4 rings were the most impacted by adding biochar. Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA) and clustering analysis indicated that microbial community's distribution was more soil type-related than biochar-related. Illumina MiSeq sequencing results revealed that Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria and Verrucomicrobia were the most dominant in all the investigated samples, and that most of the strains were Gram–negative. However, at the genus level a large shift in the bacterial community was observed in LQ soil after adding biochar with increased abundance of the potential PAHs degraders. Thus, the current study highlights the potential of SOM in affecting the PAHs biodegradation by biochar, which may be attributed to the impacted sorption behavior of pollutants and selective enrichment of PAHs degraders.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Fired Clay Bricks Incorporating Cigarette Butts.

Cigarette butts (CBs) are the most common littered waste in the world and may contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the incomplete combustion of tobacco during burning. Therefore, to investigate the potential PAH residual remaining in fired clay bricks (FCBs) incorporating CBs and examine the environmental impact of utilizing toxic waste in the production of FCBs, a comprehensive PAH extraction analysis was conducted. The Soxhlet extraction method was utilized to conduct a qualitative and quantitative analysis of sixteen toxic Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in FCB samples incorporating CBs using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The concentrations of the mean total (Σ)PAHs for FCBs incorporating 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2% CBs by weight (wt) were found to be 0.183, 0.180, 0.242, 0.234, and 0.463 µg/mL. As expected, PAHs with higher water solubility and volatility, naphthalene, fluorene, anthracene, pyrene, fluoranthene, and chrysene were found at higher concentrations compared to lipophilic PAHs. The ΣPAH concentrations for all five FCB–CB mixes were well below the EPA Victoria solid waste hazard categorization threshold for industrial waste. Moreover, the samples were studied for their carbon content using the carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulfur (CHNS) analyzer and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results confirm an almost 100% combustion process of CBs during the firing process. A content less than 0.3% suggests that all carbon within the FCB–CB mixture relatively disappeared during the firing process up to 1050 °C. However, further research regarding the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during the production of FCBs incorporating CBs should be conducted.
