Modeling the relationship between postharvest storage conditions and grapefruit quality

The postharvest loss in quality of grapefruit during storage can be quantified by determining the change of the quality traits of grapefruit, including total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), TSS/TA, weight loss (WL), and the development of decay (DC) and chilling injury (CI). The objective of this study was, therefore, to develop models that encompass the relationship between both storage conditions and duration and the quality traits of grapefruit to predict the loss of grapefruit quality during storage. The models of TSS, TA and TSS/TA were developed with experimental data collected during the 2007–08 and 2008-09 growing seasons that were obtained from the literature. The models for WL, DC, and CI were developed with experimental data collected in Florida during the 2004–05 and 2005-06 growing seasons. The WL, DC and CI models were applied to determine storage life. The results indicated that there was a second-order polynomial relationship between storage duration and TSS and linear relationships between storage duration and TA and TSS/TA. A longer storage duration resulted in a higher TSS, a lower TA and a higher TSS/TA. There were linear relationships between storage duration and WL, thermal time above a threshold temperature of 0 °C and DC and thermal time below 10 °C and CI, with higher WL, DC and CI resulting from longer storage duration and larger number of thermal times. Model performance for simulating TSS, TA, TSS/TA for storage temperature between 2 °C and 11 °C was good. There is good performance for simulating WL for storage temperature between 4 °C and 12 °C, DC for storage temperature of 21.1 °C, and CI for storage temperature of 4.4 °C. Following model development, it was applied to determine the optimum storage life. Optimum storage condition was a storage temperature of 7.6 °C for approximately 20 d, resulting in less than 5 % of the stored fruits lost due to unacceptable quality based on predictions for WL, DC and CI.

Improved Long-Term Preservation of Cannabis Inflorescence by Utilizing Integrated Pre-Harvest Hexanoic Acid Treatment and Optimal Post-Harvest Storage Conditions.

The effort to maintain cannabinoid and terpene levels in harvested medicinal cannabis inflorescence is crucial, as many studies demonstrated a significant concentration decrease in these compounds during the drying, curing, and storage steps. These stages are critical for the preparation and preservation of medicinal cannabis for end-use, and any decline in cannabinoid and terpene content could potentially reduce the therapeutic efficacy of the product. Consequently, in the present study, we determined the efficacy of pre-harvest hexanoic acid treatment alongside four months of post-harvest vacuum storage in prolonging the shelf life of high THCA cannabis inflorescence. Our findings indicate that hexanoic acid treatment led to elevated concentrations of certain cannabinoids and terpenes on the day of harvest and subsequent to the drying and curing processes. Furthermore, the combination of hexanoic acid treatment and vacuum storage yielded the longest shelf life and the highest cannabinoid and mono-terpene content as compared to all other groups studied. Specifically, the major cannabinoid's-(-)-Δ9-trans-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA)-concentration decreased by 4-23% during the four months of storage with the lowest reduction observed following hexanoic acid pre-harvest treatment and post-harvest vacuum storage. Hexanoic acid spray application displayed a more pronounced impact on mono-terpene preservation than storage under vacuum without hexanoic acid treatment. Conversely, sesqui-terpenes were observed to be less prone to degradation than mono-terpenes over an extended storage duration. In summation, appropriate pre-harvest treatment coupled with optimized storage conditions can significantly extend the shelf life of cannabis inflorescence and preserve high active compound concentration over an extended time period.

A comprehensive review on recent advances in postharvest treatment, storage, and quality evaluation of onion (Allium cepa): Current status, and challenges

AbstractOnion is an important economical and nutritional vegetable crop having a global demand. However, the long‐term storage and availability of quality produce during off seasons remain a constraint. The intricate process of quality degradation in onions, both pre and postharvest, is influenced by internal factors and storage conditions. To preserve the postharvest quality and prolong the shelf life of onions, effective postharvest technologies incorporating quality assessment and preservation treatments are crucial. This paper delves into the key factors associated with crop quality, postharvest treatments, and storage, providing a comprehensive understanding of their cause‐effect relationships. The primary objective of this review is to shed light on diverse postharvest treatments, storage conditions, and structures, along with their effects on the physical, chemical, and biochemical aspects of onions. Additionally, the study explores destructive and non‐destructive assessment technologies to evaluate the quality of onions. Storage and marketability is intricately tied to the advancement of appropriate technology aimed at minimizing losses during various stages of harvesting and storage conditions. This review serves as a preliminary document that can assist in exploring critical factors and advancing technologies to enhance the shelf life and quality of onions, bridging the gap between traditional methods and promising advancements.

Effects of Postharvest Storage Temperature on Physical Characteristic, Phenolic Compounds, and Antioxidant Activity of Cocoa Pod Husk

Cocoa pod husk (CPH) is a good source of bioactive components such as phenolic compounds, which are known to have potential as antioxidants. Research on the effects of postharvest storage conditions on bioactive compounds of CPH is still limited. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of postharvest storage temperature (20, 30, and 40 °C) and time on the physical characteristics, phenolic compounds, and antioxidants of CPH. The results indicated that storage for nine days reduced the color and moisture content of CPH while the texture hardened (especially at 20 and 40 °C). Total phenolic compounds (TPC) increased to 97.9% when CPH was stored at 20 °C for nine days, which was associated with an increase in catechin content and antioxidant activity. The first-order kinetic model was suitable for predicting the kinetics of changes in color, moisture content, hardness, TPC, and DPPH. The calculated Ea values indicated that the storage temperature caused the color of CPH to change easily to brown and the catechin and caffeic acid compounds to form easily. Overall, it is better to store CPH at 20 °C for nine days to increase the quality.

Energy consumption comparison of two cooling systems equipped with the heat exchangers in different agricultural postharvest storage conditions

In a hot, humid, and fluctuating climate due to global climate change, agricultural postharvest relies prominently on refrigerating systems. To enhance thermal performance, such as in refrigerating systems, heat exchangers can be used. This work focused on expressing the air temperature, air relative humidity, and energy consumption (EC) profiles of two refrigerating storages using the HFC-32 fixed- and variable-speed compressor (FSC and VSC) systems in four experimental investigations. The profiles were recorded before and after the double-pipe heat exchanger (DPHEx) installations. Both storages had heaters, humidifiers, and hot water pots to generate heat and humidity at 18 °C and 22 °C, a storage temperature range for many postharvest products. From the results, both systems performances in reducing the EC of the FSC and VSC systems were enhanced by using the DPHExs. The EC of the FSC and VSC systems were reduced by 52.33 % and 17.19 % at 18 °C and 50.63 % and 20.00 % at 22 °C, respectively. All experiments with storage using the FSC system resulted in fluctuating profiles. This research information provides basic information for preliminary decisions about using DPHExs in postharvest refrigerating systems and selecting systems targeting the FSC and VSC systems in different situations. The power demand and operating cost relating to agricultural product storage can be calculated by using the EC correlation of each cooling system. Product freshness and abundance depend on fluctuating conditions, postharvest storage conditions, temperature, and relative humidity. The VSC system, coupled with the DPHEx, demonstrated enhancements on the EC and stable conditions.

How storage circumstance alters the quality of seeds of Lallemantia iberica and Lallemantia royleana produced under maternal drought stress

Seed production underpins the agricultural industry and is impacted by the maternal environment during maturation. In addition, inappropriate post-harvest storage conditions can affect seed quality, by accelerating viability loss and reducing seed longevity. The objective of this research was to investigate the impact of storage conditions on the germination and physiological and biochemical processes of seeds of Lallemantia iberica and L. royleana under drought stress. Seeds were matured under maternal plant irrigation regimes of 30% (I30) and 60% (I60) of soil available water depletion and subjected to different storage conditions: control, natural aging (NA), controlled deterioration (CD), elevated partial pressure of oxygen (EPPO), and elevated partial pressure of nitrogen (EPPN). Seeds of both species matured under water deficit I60 had enhanced germination index, unsaturated and saturated fatty acid contents, total soluble sugar, sucrose and starch contents, and α- and β-amylase activities. This treatment also resulted in reduced seed electrical conductivity (EC), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations. The different seed storage conditions had negative effects on germination index, storage compounds, and fatty acids, with the smaller and greater changes under NA and EPPO aging, respectively. During the different aging conditions, it was noted that L. iberica seeds showed greater deterioration compared to L. royleana seeds. In conclusion, post-harvest conditions impact seed quality, with mild stress of the maternal environment increasing the seed longevity of both Lallemantia species.

Postharvest Quality Improvement of Bell Pepper (Capsicum annuum L. cv Nagano) with Forced-Air Precooling and Modified Atmosphere Packaging.

Optimum postharvest storage conditions increase the postharvest quality and shelf life of horticultural crops. The effects of forced-air precooling (FAP) and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on shelf life, physicochemical quality, and health-promoting properties of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L. cv. Nagano) harvested at 90 and 50% coloring stages in May and July respectively, stored at 11 °C, 95% relative humidity were assessed. Fruits were subjected to four treatments: FAP + 30 μm polyethylene liner (FOLO); FAP-only (FOLX); 30 μm polyethylene liner-only (FXLO); and control (FXLX). The quality attributes, viz. weight loss, firmness, color, soluble solids content (SSC), soluble sugars, total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), 2,2-dephenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) were evaluated. The investigated parameters differed significantly (p < 0.05) among treatments except for soluble sugars. FOLO maintained sensory quality (weight loss, firmness, and color), physicochemical (SSC and soluble sugars), and health-promoting properties compared to other treatments during storage. The 50% coloring fruits had a huge variation between treatments than 90% coloring. The results revealed more TPC and antioxidant capacity in the 50% than in the 90% coloring fruits. The study highlights the need to consider the ideal fruit coloring stage at harvest under the effect of FAP and MAP treatments in preserving bell pepper's postharvest quality and shelf life.

How Does the Agro-Ecological Conditions Grown Kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) Affect the Fruit Quality Traits and Bioactive Compounds during Shelf Life?

The kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa cv. ‘Hayward’), which shows climacteric characteristics, continues to ripen after harvest. In this process, quality losses occur in fruits, and this causes economic losses. The post-harvest storage conditions are essential in preventing these losses. The main purpose of this study was to assess the effect of agro-ecological conditions on quality traits and bioactive compounds of the kiwifruit throughout the shelf life. In this study, kiwifruit grown in 5 different locations (Ordu, Giresun, Rize, Samsun, and Yalova) constituted the plant material of the study. The fruits treated with modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) were stored at 0 ± 0.5 °C and 90 ± 5% relative humidity (RH) for 150 days in cold storage. For shelf life measurements, fruits were kept at 20 ± 1 °C and 65 ± 5% RH for 5 d. Quality analysis was performed at monthly intervals (at harvest, 30th, 60th, 90th, 120th, and 150th d). In this study, the lowest respiration rate at the end of the shelf life was measured in kiwifruit grown in Yalova. Flesh firmness was higher in kiwifruit grown in Rize, Ordu, and Giresun than Samsun. In all periods, Yalova’s L* value in flesh was higher than that of Ordu. The opposite situation was observed for the hue angle. The soluble solids content (SSC) values measured in Samsun and Yalova were higher than in Ordu and Rize. In the last four measurements, higher vitamin C was detected in Yalova than in Ordu, Rize and Giresun. In all periods, the highest total phenolics and antioxidant activity (in DPPH assay) were obtained in kiwifruit grown in Yalova. On the contrary, the highest flavonoids were measured in kiwifruit grown in Ordu. As a result, it was revealed that agro-ecological conditions may affect the quality traits and bioactive compounds of kiwifruit.

Effects of Storage Temperatures on Nitrogen Assimilation and Remobilization during Post-Harvest Senescence of Pak Choi.

In the agricultural industry, the post-harvest leafy vegetable quality and shelf life significantly influence market value and consumer acceptability. This study examined the effects of different storage temperatures on leaf senescence, nitrogen assimilation, and remobilization in Pak Choi (Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis). Mature Pak Choi plants were harvested and stored at two different temperatures, 4 °C and 25 °C. Senescence was tracked via chlorophyll content and leaf yellowing. Concurrently, alterations in the total nitrogen, nitrate, and protein content were quantified on days 0, 3, 6, and 9 in old, mid, and young leaves of Pak Choi plants. As expected, 4 °C alleviated chlorophyll degradation and delayed senescence of Pak Choi compared to 25 °C. Total nitrogen and protein contents were inversely correlated, while the nitrate content remained nearly constant across leaf groups at 25 °C. Additionally, the transcript levels of genes involved in nitrogen assimilation and remobilization revealed key candidate genes that were differentially expressed between 4 °C and 25 °C, which might be targeted to extend the shelf life of the leafy vegetables. Thus, this study provides pivotal insights into the molecular and physiological responses of Pak Choi to post-harvest storage conditions.

Preharvest and postharvest techniques that optimize the shelf life of fresh basil (Ocimum basilicum L.): a review.

Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is a popular specialty crop known for its use as a culinary herb and medicinal plant around the world. However, its profitability and availability are limited by a short postharvest shelf life due to poor handling, cold sensitivity and microbial contamination. Here, we comprehensively review the research on pre- and postharvest techniques that extend the shelf life of basil to serve as a practical tool for growers, distributors, retailers and scientists. Modifications to postharvest storage conditions, pre- and postharvest treatments, harvest time and preharvest production methods have been found to directly impact the quality of basil and its shelf life. The most effective strategies for extending the shelf life and improving the quality of basil are discussed and promising strategies that research and industry employ are identified.

Blackberries and Mulberries: Berries with Significant Health-Promoting Properties.

Blackberries and mulberries are small and perishable fruits that provide significant health benefits when consumed. In reality, both are rich in phytochemicals, such as phenolics and volatile compounds, and micronutrients, such as vitamins. All the compounds are well-known thanks to their medicinal and pharmacological properties, namely antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, antiviral, and cardiovascular properties. Nevertheless, variables such as genotype, production conditions, fruit ripening stage, harvesting time, post-harvest storage, and climate conditions influence their nutritional composition and economic value. Given these facts, the current review focuses on the nutritional and chemical composition, as well as the health benefits, of two blackberry species (Rubus fruticosus L., and Rubus ulmifolius Schott) and one mulberry species (Morus nigra L.).

Biocontrol Screening of Endophytes: Applications and Limitations.

The considerable loss of crop productivity each year due to plant disease or pathogen invasion during pre- or post-harvest storage conditions is one of the most severe challenges to achieving the goals of food security for the rising global population. Although chemical pesticides severally affect the food quality and health of consumers, a large population relies on them for plant disease management. But currently, endophytes have been considered one of the most suitable biocontrol agents due to better colonization and acclimatization potential. However, a very limited number of endophytes have been used commercially as biocontrol agents. Isolation of endophytes and their screening to represent potential characteristics as biocontrol agents are considered challenging by different procedures. Through a web search using the keywords "endophytes as biocontrol agents" or "biocontrol mechanism of endophytes," we have succinctly summarised the isolation strategies and different in vitro and in vivo biocontrol screening methods of endophytic biocontrol agents in the present review. In this paper, biocontrol mechanisms of endophytes and their potential application in plant disease management have also been discussed. Furthermore, the registration and regulatory mechanism of the endophytic biocontrol agents are also covered.

A flight sensing detector for apple maturity indexes in orchard

Apples quality monitoring and maturity measurement are important for yield evaluation, profit estimation, determination of harvest time and postharvest storage conditions. This study explored the monitoring ability of the micro-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to the orchard, the force sensor and gyroscope are used to observe the force and posture changes of apples during the spectral collection process. The UAV carries 18 channels of visible/near-infrared multispectral sensor to collect the internal information of growing apples at close range. A total of 200 apples were collected in the orchard, and then soluble solid content (SSC), titratable acid (TA), firmness, and starch pattern index (SPI) were destructively tested. Multiple scatter correction (MSC) and Standard normal variate (SNV) pretreatment combined with partial least squares regression (PLSR) were used to establish the internal quality prediction model. Streif index is used to evaluate the maturity of apples. The results showed that the detection of apples on trees by UAV would not affect the growth of apples and could collect the internal quality information. The correlation coefficient of the prediction model for apple maturity is 0.8593 and root mean square error is 0.0102. It shows that this study has potential in detecting the changes of quality and maturity of growing apples and is helpful to the overall perception of orchards.

Effect of post-harvest processing methods on the microbial safety of edible seaweed

The American seaweed industry is growing, primarily into the edible sector, and more seaweed products are available for human consumption. It is necessary to evaluate the safety of industry’s current post-harvest storage and processing methods to ensure the risk of foodborne pathogens on edible seaweed remains low. We evaluated the pathogen load of edible kelp post-harvest under three different storage temperatures (4˚C, 10˚C, 20˚C) and two different drying methods (air- and freeze-drying). The focal pathogens for this research included: Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enterica, Staphylococcus aureus, pathogenic Escherichia coli, Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. We tested all six pathogens under each treatment condition on both sugar kelp (Saccharina latissima) and rockweed (Ascophyllum nodosum) as these are the most commonly farmed and wild-harvested species in Maine, respectively. We inoculated a known concentration of pathogen onto freshly harvested kelp, treated it under a storage temperature or drying method, and sampled it over time to determine the impact of treatment on pathogen load. Our results showed that storage at 20˚C can lead to replication while storage at 4˚C and 10˚C halted the replication of focal pathogens. Both air-drying and freeze-drying produced significant log scale reductions in surface pathogen load for all focal pathogens. Additionally, air-drying reduced pathogen load more than freeze-drying for a majority of pathogens and storing dried kelp for 6-weeks further reduced pathogen load across all cases. These results are promising for industry as they corroborate historical evidence that current post-harvest storage and processing conditions are producing products safe for human consumption.

Storage conditions and postharvest practices lead to aflatoxin contamination in maize in two counties (Makueni and Baringo) in Kenya

Abstract Aflatoxins are known to cause devastating acute and chronic effects in humans and animals. The objective of the study was to determine the influence of postharvest practices and storage conditions on aflatoxin contamination in maize in two counties. Aflatoxin levels in 144 maize samples from different maize storage conditions were determined. While sampling, a structured questionnaire was also administered to evaluate farmer’s postharvest practices. Makueni County had the highest percentage of aflatoxin positive samples with up to 174 ppb attributed to the long storage under unfavourable conditions. On the other hand, Baringo County had lower positivity associated with the harvesting season at the time of sample collection. The type of storage condition had a significant effect on the extent of contamination and accounted for 11% of the variation (R 2 = 0.11). Gunny bags were the most common type of storage condition and had the highest level of contamination in both the counties. Metallic bins had the lowest level of contamination. Aflatoxin G1 and G2 were predominant in samples from Baringo County, while aflatoxin B1 and B2 were predominant in samples from Makueni County. The study concluded that the type of storage condition significantly contributes to the aflatoxin contamination in the stored maize. Proper drying of maize to the recommended moisture content and subsequent storage in hermetic structures will reduce the cases of aflatoxin contamination.

Impact of fruit bagging and postharvest storage conditions on quality and decay of organic nectarines

ABSTRACT Abiotic factors such as light influence the physicochemical properties of fruit and may alter the response of the fruit to the environment. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of two postharvest storage conditions on the overall quality and natural fungal disease incidence (fruit decay) of organic nectarines. Experiments were conducted with four organically grown nectarine cultivars (two early-mid season and two late-season) that were unbagged or bagged during preharvest. After harvest, they were stored for 7–9 days in darkness or under a treatment with lighting. Quality parameters (weight, diameter, firmness, soluble solids content, titratable acidity, and single index of absorbance difference), ethylene production, and fruit decay (% incidence of decay) were evaluated. Preharvest bagging reduced fruit decay in the late-season cultivars, for which storage under darkness reduced fungal decay (up to 100%) more than storage under lighting treatment (47% reduction). Bagging altered the initial fruit quality, but values were within official recommendations. Storage conditions reduced differences attributed to bagging, especially under storage with lighting. This work highlighted the importance of modulating the light, both in the field by fruit bagging and during postharvest, to reduce fruit decay and improve fruit quality. These results may serve as a tool for both farmers and postharvest chain managers.

Transcriptome Analysis of Soursop (Annona muricata L.) Fruit under Postharvest Storage Identifies Genes Families Involved in Ripening.

Soursop (Annona muricata L.) is climacteric fruit with a short ripening period and postharvest shelf life, leading to a rapid softening. In this study, transcriptome analysis of soursop fruits was performed to identify key gene families involved in ripening under postharvest storage conditions (Day 0, Day 3 stored at 28 ± 2 °C, Day 6 at 28 ± 2 °C, Day 3 at 15 ± 2 °C, Day 6 at 15 ± 2 °C, Day 9 at 15 ± 2 °C). The transcriptome analysis showed 224,074 transcripts assembled clustering into 95, 832 unigenes, of which 21, 494 had ORF. RNA-seq analysis showed the highest number of differentially expressed genes on Day 9 at 15 ± 2 °C with 9291 genes (4772 up-regulated and 4519 down-regulated), recording the highest logarithmic fold change in pectin-related genes. Enrichment analysis presented significantly represented GO terms and KEGG pathways associated with molecular function, metabolic process, catalytic activity, biological process terms, as well as biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, plant hormone signal, starch, and sucrose metabolism, plant–pathogen interaction, plant–hormone signal transduction, and MAPK-signaling pathways, among others. Network analysis revealed that pectinesterase genes directly regulate the loss of firmness in fruits stored at 15 ± 2 °C.
