Intensive pre-operative information course (IPIC) and pre-operative weight loss results in long-term sustained weight loss following bariatric surgery: 11years results from a tertiary referral centre.

Outcomes of long-term (5-10-year) weight loss have not been investigated thoroughly and the role of pre-operative weight loss on long-term weight loss, among other factors, are unknown. Our regional bariatric service introduced a 12week intensive pre-operative information course (IPIC) to optimise pre-operative weight loss and provide education prior to bariatric surgery. The present study determines the effect of pre-operative weight loss and an intense pre-operative information course (IPIC), on long-term weight outcomes and sustained weight loss post-bariatric surgery. Data were collected prospectively from a bariatric center (2008-2022). Excess weight loss (EWL) ≥ 50% and ≥ 70% were considered outcome measures. Survival analysis and logistic regression identified variables associated with overall and sustained EWL ≥ 50% and ≥ 70%. Three hundred thirty-nine patients (median age, 49years; median follow-up, 7years [0.5-11years]; median EWL%, 49.6%.) were evaluated, including 158 gastric sleeve and 161 gastric bypass. During follow-up 273 patients (80.5%) and 196 patients (53.1%) achieved EWL ≥ 50% and ≥ 70%, respectively. In multivariate survival analyses, pre-operative weight loss through IPIC, both < 10.5% and > 10.5% EWL, were positively associated with EWL ≥ 50% (HR 2.23, p < 0.001) and EWL ≥ 70% (HR 3.24, p < 0.001), respectively. After a median of 6.5years after achieving EWL50% or EWL70%, 56.8% (154/271) had sustained EWL50% and 50.6% (85/168) sustained EWL70%. Higher pre-operative weight loss through IPIC increased the likelihood of sustained EWL ≥ 50% (OR, 2.36; p = 0.013) and EWL ≥ 70% (OR, 2.03; p = 0.011) at the end of follow-up. IPIC and higher pre-operative weight loss improve weight loss post-bariatric surgery and reduce the likelihood of weight regain during long-term follow-up.

Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists in Post-bariatric Surgery Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

A significant number of patients face the issue of weight gain (WG) or inadequate weight loss (IWL) post-bariatric surgery for obesity. Several studies have been published evaluating the role of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1RA) for weight loss post-bariatric surgery. However, no systematic review and meta-analysis (SRM) till date has evaluated the efficacy, safety and tolerability of GLP1RA in this clinical scenario. Hence, this SRM aimed to address this knowledge gap. Databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs), case-control, cohort and observational studies involving use of GLP1RA in the intervention arm post-bariatric surgery. Primary outcome was weight loss post at least 3months of therapy. Secondary outcomes were evaluation of body composition parameters, total adverse events (TAEs) and severe adverse events (SAEs). From initially screened 1759 articles, 8 studies (557 individuals) were analysed. Compared to placebo, patients receiving liraglutide had significantly greater weight loss after 6-month therapy [MD - 6.0kg (95% CI, - 8.66 to - 3.33); P < 0.001; I2 = 79%]. Compared to liraglutide, semaglutide had significantly greater percent reduction in body weight after 6-month [MD - 2.57% (95% CI, - 3.91 to - 1.23); P < 0.001; I2 = 0%] and 12-month [MD - 4.15% (95% CI, - 6.96 to - 1.34); P = 0.004] therapy. In study by Murvelashvili et al. (2023), after 12-month therapy, semaglutide had significantly higher rates of achieving > 15% [OR 2.15 (95% CI, 1.07-4.33); P = 0.03; n = 207] and > 10% [OR 2.10 (95% CI, 1.19-3.71); P = 0.01; n = 207] weight loss. A significant decrease in fat mass [MD - 4.78kg (95% CI, - 7.11 to - 2.45); P < 0.001], lean mass [MD - 3.01kg (95% CI, - 4.80 to - 1.22); P = 0.001] and whole-body bone mineral density [MD - 0.02kg/m2 (95% CI, - 0.04 to - 0.00); P = 0.03] was noted with liraglutide. Current data is encouraging regarding use of GLP1RAs for managing WG or IWL post-bariatric surgery. Deterioration of bone health and muscle mass remains a concern needing further evaluation. The predefined protocol has been registered in PROSPERO having registration number of CRD42023473991.

Adjuvant Glucose-Like Peptide 1 Receptor Agonist Therapy for Suboptimal Weight Loss After Bariatric Surgery: a Systematic Review.

Addressing suboptimal weight loss post-bariatric surgery poses a challenge. While glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RA) show promise in managing obesity, their role as an adjuvant treatment after bariatric surgery remains uncertain. We conducted a systematic literature review focused on the efficacy and safety of GLP1-RA in bariatric surgery patients with insufficient weight loss or distant weight regain. Our literature search identified 1167 articles, with 10 (involving 594 patients) meeting inclusion/exclusion criteria for detailed review. GLP1-RA therapy resulted in 5 to 17% weight loss over 6 to 12 months, with 10-50% experiencing non-severe side effects like nausea. Overall, GLP1-RA emerges as an effective adjuvant therapy for patients experiencing inadequate weight loss or regain after bariatric surgery, offering a viable alternative to revision surgery.

The Effects of Post-Surgical Pregnancy on Weight Loss Trajectories after Bariatric Surgery: Are Initial Weight and Age Prognostic Factors?

Introduction: A substantial percentage of patients undergoing bariatric surgery are of childbearing age. Pregnancy outcomes after bariatric surgery are known. However, there are limited data on the impact of pregnancy on weight loss after surgery. Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the effects of pregnancy on post-bariatric surgery weight loss trajectories (WLTs) and to determine the association with age and initial weight. Methods: All who had primary bariatric surgeries (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or sleeve) between September 2015 and July 2020 were classified into two groups: post-surgery gravid (GG) and post-surgery non-gravid (NG). WLTs were examined using a random intercept mixed-effects model with repeated measures nested within patients. The post-surgery/pre-gravid time phase (PoPG) was modelled using a third-degree polynomial. For GG, two third-degree spline functions modelled the post-surgery while gravid (PoWG) and post-partum (PoPP) time phases. Age and initial weight were used to control for pre-existing differences during PoPG. Weight differences at 6 months PoPP were examined by applying general linear hypothesis testing to the mixed-model results. Results: A total of 508 patients were included, 20 in GG and 488 in NG. The mean age at surgery was 33 years in GG and 37 years in NG. The mean initial BMI was 47 kg/m2 and 43 kg/m2, respectively. During PoPG, adjusted average weight in both groups follows the path across time. For GG, weight decreases and then increases during PoWG. For GG during PoPP, weight immediately decreases after delivery and then increases over time to levels similar to NG. Weight differences at 6 months PoPP for GG and NG were not statistically different. Older age was associated with reduced weight loss during PoPG by Baseline Age, while higher initial weight was associated with increased weight loss during PoPG by Baseline Weight. In both instances, these effects attenuate over time. Conclusions: This model indicates that pregnancy following bariatric surgery affects WLT during PoWG and PoPP, and no difference in weight is expected after 6 months post-gravid. Age and initial weight could be considered prognostic factors during PoPG. Patients wishing to conceive should undergo preconception counselling and be advised to avoid pregnancy during the period of rapid weight loss. They also should be informed that WLT may vary during pregnancy and early post-partum.

The Association Between Preoperative Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 Levels and the Total Body Weight Loss in Women Post Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy.

Despite the well-described optimal initial clinical response of sleeve gastrectomy (SG) in the treatment of obesity, some patients do not achieve optimal initial clinical response. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) has currently shown an association with post-bariatric surgery weight loss. This study aimed to assess the IGF-1 levels in female patients with obesity, the change after surgery, and their association with the metabolic profile and weight loss after surgery. This was a prospective study that was conducted on adult female patients who were recruited for SG. The patients underwent clinical and laboratory investigations that included the IGF-1 measurement. At the 1-year follow-up, the same clinical and laboratory measures were repeated. This study included 100 female patients. At the 1-year follow-up, there was a statistically significant reduction in body mass index (BMI) (p < 0.001), fasting HbA1C levels (p < 0.001), and triglycerides (p < 0.001), as well as a statistically significant increase in HDL (p < 0.001) and IGF-1 (p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis revealed that, among the patients baseline characteristics, the significant predictors for the percentage of total weight loss (%TWL) were the patients' BMI (p < 0.001) and IGF-1 levels (p < 0.001). The ROC curve showed that an IGF1 cutoff value of ≤ 23ng/ml detected suboptimal initial clinical response, with a sensitivity of 95.35% and a specificity of 100%. This study underscores the significant impact of SG on weight loss and metabolic improvements in female patients. Baseline IGF-1 levels emerged as a crucial predictor of optimal initial clinical response.

The DECON pilot project investigates predictive markers for successful bariatric surgery

Obesity is a chronic, multifactorial disease which is linked to a number of adverse endocrinological and metabolic conditions. Currently, bariatric surgery is one of the most effective treatments for individuals diagnosed with severe obesity. However, the current indications for bariatric surgery are based on inadequate metrics (i.e., BMI) which do not account for the complexity of the disease, nor the heterogeneity among the patient population. Moreover, there is a lack of understanding with respect to the biological underpinnings that influence successful and sustained weight loss post-bariatric surgery. Studies have implicated age and pre-surgery body weight as two factors that are associated with favorable patient outcomes. Still, there is an urgent medical need to identify other potential factors that could improve the specificity of candidate selection and better inform the treatment plan of patients with obesity. In this report, we present and describe the cohort of the DECON pilot project, a multicenter study which aims to identify predictive biomarkers of successful weight loss after bariatric surgery.

The impact of metabolic endotoxaemia on the browning process in human adipocytes

BackgroundDysfunctional adipose tissue (AT) is known to contribute to the pathophysiology of metabolic disease, including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This dysfunction may occur, in part, as a consequence of gut-derived endotoxaemia inducing changes in adipocyte mitochondrial function and reducing the proportion of BRITE (brown-in-white) adipocytes. Therefore, the present study investigated whether endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide; LPS) directly contributes to impaired human adipocyte mitochondrial function and browning in human adipocytes, and the relevant impact of obesity status pre and post bariatric surgery.MethodsHuman differentiated abdominal subcutaneous (AbdSc) adipocytes from participants with obesity and normal-weight participants were treated with endotoxin to assess in vitro changes in mitochondrial function and BRITE phenotype. Ex vivo human AbdSc AT from different groups of participants (normal-weight, obesity, pre- and 6 months post-bariatric surgery) were assessed for similar analyses including circulating endotoxin levels.ResultsEx vivo AT analysis (lean & obese, weight loss post-bariatric surgery) identified that systemic endotoxin negatively correlated with BAT gene expression (p < 0.05). In vitro endotoxin treatment of AbdSc adipocytes (lean & obese) reduced mitochondrial dynamics (74.6% reduction; p < 0.0001), biogenesis (81.2% reduction; p < 0.0001) and the BRITE phenotype (93.8% reduction; p < 0.0001). Lean AbdSc adipocytes were more responsive to adrenergic signalling than obese AbdSc adipocytes; although endotoxin mitigated this response (92.6% reduction; p < 0.0001).ConclusionsTaken together, these data suggest that systemic gut-derived endotoxaemia contributes to both individual adipocyte dysfunction and reduced browning capacity of the adipocyte cell population, exacerbating metabolic consequences. As bariatric surgery reduces endotoxin levels and is associated with improving adipocyte functionality, this may provide further evidence regarding the metabolic benefits of such surgical interventions.

The role of adjuvant pharmacotherapy with liraglutide for patients with inadequate weight loss following bariatric surgery

PurposeDespite the benefits of bariatric surgery for many patients, there are a proportion of patients who do not achieve adequate weight loss. We evaluate the role of liraglutide as adjuvant pharmacotherapy in those who respond poorly to weight loss surgery.Materials and MethodsA non-controlled, prospective, open-label cohort study in which participants are prescribed liraglutide following inadequate response to weight loss surgery. The efficacy and tolerability of liraglutide was measured through measurement of BMI and monitoring of side effect profile.ResultsA total of 68 partial responders to bariatric surgery were included in the study, 2 participants were lost to follow-up. Overall 89.7% lost weight on liraglutide, with 22.1% showing a good response (>10% total body weight loss). There were 41 patients who discontinued liraglutide mainly due to cost.ConclusionLiraglutide is efficacious in achieving weight loss and reasonably well tolerated in patients who have inadequate weight loss post-bariatric surgery.

Association Between Obesity and Chronic Kidney Disease: Multivariable Mendelian Randomization Analysis and Observational Data From a Bariatric Surgery Cohort.

Obesity is postulated to independently increase chronic kidney disease (CKD), even after adjusting for type 2 diabetes (T2D) and hypertension. Dysglycemia below T2D thresholds, frequently seen with obesity, also increases CKD risk. Whether obesity increases CKD independent of dysglycemia and hypertension is unknown and likely influences the optimal weight loss (WL) needed to reduce CKD. T2D remission rates plateaus with 20-25%WL postbariatric surgery (BS) but further WL increases normoglycemia/normotension. We undertook bidirectional inverse variance weighted Mendelian randomization (IVMR) to investigate potential independent causal associations between increased BMI and CKDeGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate, eGFR < 60 ml/min1.73m2) and microalbuminuria (MA). In 5337 BS patients, we assessed whether WL influences >50% decline in eGFR (primary outcome) or CKD hospitalization (secondary outcome) using <20% WL as a comparator. IVWMR suggests increased BMI increases CKDeGFR (beta=0.13, p=1.64x10-4), Odds ratio, OR (95% confidence interval, CI)=1.14(1.07-1.23) and MA (b=0.25, p=2.14 x 10-4,OR(95%CI)=1.29(1.13-1.48). After adjusting for hypertension and fasting glucose, increased BMI did not significantly increase CKDeGFR (b=-0.02, p=0.72), OR(95%CI)=0.98(0.87-1.1) or MA (b=0.19, p=0.08, OR (95%CI)=1.21 (0.98, 1.51). Post-BS WL significantly reduced the primary outcome with 30-<40%WL (Hazard ratio HR=0.53, 95%CI=0.32-0.87), but not 20-<30%WL (HR=0.72, 95%CI=0.44-1.2) and ≥40%WL (HR=0.73, 95%CI=0.41-1.30). For CKD hospitalization, progressive reduction was seen with increased WL which was significant for 30-<40%WL (HR=0.37, 95%CI=0.17-0.82) and ≥40%WL (HR=0.24, 95%CI=0.07-0.89), but not 20-30%WL (HR=0.60, 95%CI=0.29-1.23). The data suggests obesity is likely not an independent cause of CKD. WL thresholds previously associated with normotension and normoglycemia, likely causal mediators, may reduce CKD post-BS.

Preoperative factors correlated with post-bariatric surgery weight loss

Whether preoperative parameters can predict weight loss following bariatric surgery is a matter of debate. We conducted a longitudinal and prospective pilot study on 35 patients that underwent bariatric surgery, with a 12-month follow-up. In the preoperative period, a high HOMA-beta index, lower fasting blood glucose, and lower HbA1c were correlated with a lower BMI at 12 months. Traditional preoperative factors, such as weight and BMI, were correlated with the postoperative BMI values. The presence of well-controlled diabetes may influence weight loss after surgery.

Dry beriberi after sleeve gastrectomy: An undiagnosed case report.

Introduction and importanceSleeve gastrectomy (SG) is a popular surgery for morbid obesity because of minimal complications, while somewhere uncommon micronutrient deficiencies occur that make problems. One of these rare complications is dry beriberi (BB).Case presentationA 20-year-old girl with obesity that a few months after SG had non-specific symptoms like nausea, vomiting, debilitating weakness, burning, and tingling in her feet, which led to more tests and imaging and confused the physicians. During the next two months, she had a 40 kg weight loss. The critical test that helped diagnosis was Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Velocity (EMG/NCV), which showed subacute axonal sensory-motor polyneuropathy and decreased level of vitamin B1, proved the patient's diagnosis was dray BB.Clinical discussionSG may contribute to vitamin and trace elements deficiency development. One of the micronutrients that deficiencies can disturb the patient is vitamin B1 deficiency. Vitamin B1 deficiencies could be demonstrated with peripheral polyneuropathy, beriberi, or Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. Based on decreased vitamin B1 and EMG/NCV results, the diagnosis had been dry beriberi corrected with supplement therapy.ConclusionThiamine deficiency should be suspected in all patients with vomiting, neurological symptoms, and rapid weight loss post-bariatric surgery (BS), even after restrictive surgery. Especially when a patient reports substantial weight loss and vomiting in short order. Hopefully, this case report will make any patient hospitalized with similar conditions evaluated for beriberi and again multivitamin supplementation therapy after SG is emphasized.

Parallel improvement of systolic function with surgical weight loss in patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction: a systematic review and patient-level meta-analysis.

Morbid obesity (MO) is an increasingly common condition in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Although substantial weight loss in morbidly obese patients has proved to slow the progression of heart failure, parallel alteration of ejection fraction (EF) and New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class along with post-bariatric surgery weight loss is yet to be determined. This systematic review aimed to measure the effect of bariatric weight loss on EF and NYHA functional class in patients with HFrEF. A systematic literature review was performed in Medline/PubMed to identify studies in patients with MO and pre-existing HFrEF, who underwent bariatric surgery. A total of 11 studies encompassing 136 patients with HFrEF undergoing bariatric surgery for MO were included. Six studies provided patient-level data on 37 cases. Patients lost an average body mass index (BMI) of 12.9 ± 4.2 kg/m2 (5.1 to 23 kg/m2) after an average follow up of 22.43 ± 18.6 months (2-89 mo). There was a direct correlation between BMI loss and EF improvement (r = 0.61, P < .0001), but not between BMI loss and NYHA functional class changes (r = 0.17, P = .4). Weight loss induced by bariatric surgery results in parallel EF increase in patients with MO and HFrEF. However, current data does not indicate a parallel improvement of clinical symptoms (NYHA functional class) along with such an increase in EF in this population of patients.

Asymptomatic Sinus Bradycardia Post-Bariatric Surgery: A Case Report

Bradyarrhythmia as a result of significant weight loss post-bariatric surgery is slowly gaining recognition in few case reports and even fewer studies. However, awareness of its diagnosis and management amongst physicians remains modest. We report a case of asymptomatic sinus bradycardia in a 41-year-old woman who shed 19.5 kg/m2 in 4 months following bariatric surgery. The pathophysiology, diagnostics and management of post-bariatric surgery sinus bradycardia is briefly discussed.

Impact of Bariatric Surgery on Endometrial Cancer Tumor Pathology.

Obesity is a well-established risk factor for endometrial cancer and is thought to adversely affect outcomes. The impact of significant and sustained weight loss as achieved by bariatric surgery for women with endometrial cancer is not well understood. We performed an institutional retrospective review of patients who underwent bariatric surgery and were diagnosed with premalignant or malignant uterine disease from 1989 to 2019 (n=171). We compared tumor characteristics and cancer-specific outcomes in patients diagnosed with uterine disease before ("PRE" group) or after ("POST" group) undergoing bariatric surgery and in a BMI- and age-matched cohort who did not undergo bariatric surgery. Of the 171 patients, 120 were in the PRE group and 51 in the POST group. The POST group was more likely to have adenocarcinoma (68.6 vs 45.0%, p=0.012) and more likely to have a minimally invasive hysterectomy (80.9 vs 46.2%, p<0.001). Post-bariatric surgery weight loss was similar between the two groups. In women with malignant disease, tumor grade and pathology were similar in the PRE and POST groups. The 5-year overall survival was 98% in the PRE group and 77.8% in the POST group (p=0.016). However, 5-year overall survival was statistically similar in both PRE and POST groups compared to a matched cohort who did not undergo bariatric surgery. In this study, we did not detect an impact of bariatric surgery on endometrial cancer pathology or disease survival. Larger, multi-center studies are needed to investigate the relationship between bariatric surgery status and cancer outcomes.

The Impact of Ethnic Differences Between Israeli-Jews and Israeli-Arabs on Post-bariatric Surgery Weight Loss: a Prospective Cohort Analysis.

Previous studies from different countries have shown that ethnic diversity may have an important effect on clinical outcome following bariatric procedures. Israel has an ethnic diverse population but there is limited information about this effect on surgery outcome. We carried out a 3-year institutional, prospective comparative data collection study among Jewish and Arab patients in Israel undergoing primary bariatric surgery. Percent of total weight loss (%TWL) and change in body mass index (BMI) were assessed. The results revealed no difference between Arab and Jewish participants in %TWL nor BMI change. Differences in absolute BMI values were all accounted for by the initial between-group difference in the pre-operative BMI. Comorbidity resolution at 1year post-surgery was not significantly different between the groups.

The impact of impulsivity on weight loss after bariatric surgery: a systematic review.

Impulsivity has been shown to be associated with obesity through links to pathological eating behavior such as binge eating. The recent literature suggests that impulsivity is linked to poorer outcomes post-bariatric surgery. Impulsivity can be measured in various ways and comprises of three broad domains: impulsive choice, impulsive action, and impulsive personality traits. The aim of this systematic review is to synthesize the current evidence on the impact of impulsivity on post-bariatric surgery weight loss. A literature review was performed in February 2020. Original studies investigating the relationship between impulsivity and weight loss post-bariatric surgery were evaluated. Ten studies with a total of 1246 patients were analyzed. There were four case-control, four prospective observational and two retrospective observational studies. The postoperative follow-up ranged from 0.5 to 12years. Eight studies measuring trait impulsivity did not show any association with weight loss post-bariatric surgery, although two studies reported an indirect effect of impulsivity on weight loss mediated via pathological eating behavior. Assessment of impulsive action by two studies showed that post-bariatric surgery weight loss is affected by impulsive action. Impulsivity may adversely affect postoperative outcomes after bariatric surgery. However, this may be specific to state impulsivity or impulsive action rather than trait impulsivity. Patients with a higher state impulsivity may benefit from closer follow-up post-bariatric surgery, as well as cognitive behavioral therapies targeting cognitive control over food. Preoperative Weight Loss via Very Low Caloric Diet (VLCD) and Its Effect on Outcomes After Bariatric Surgery

The effect of preoperative weight loss via very low caloric diet (VLCD) on long-term weight loss post-bariatric surgery (BS) is conflicting. We analysed its impact on weight loss and other outcomes post-BS. Patients (n = 306) who underwent sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass from 2008 to 2018 were studied. VLCD was prescribed for 14days preoperatively. Patients were followed up for 5years. Postoperative weight loss was compared in patients with preoperative weight gain or weight loss < 5% (WL < 5%), and weight loss ≥ 5% (WL ≥ 5%). Preoperative WL compared weight before and after VLCD; postoperative WL compared post-VLCD weight and follow-up weight. Total weight loss (TWL) encompassed pre- and postoperative WL. WL was < 5% in 87.3% and ≥ 5% in 12.7%. There was no significant difference in complication rate, duration of surgery or length of stay, regardless of surgical type. Patients with WL < 5% lost more weight postoperatively compared with WL ≥ 5% for up to 60months (%postoperative WL at 1month: WL < 5% = 13.7%, WL ≥ 5% = 10%, p = <0.001; 60months: WL < 5% = 30.6%, WL ≥ 5% = 23.9%, p = 0.041). However, when TWL and percentage of excess body mass index loss (%EBMIL) were measured, there was no difference beyond 6months. A predictive multivariable model for 1-year %EBMIL was formed. Significant variables included pre-VLCD BMI and preoperative WL, and the relationship between the two. Preoperative WL via VLCD was associated with reduced postoperative WL after BS, with no significant effect on complications, long-term TWL or %EBMIL. This challenges the notion that preoperative WL via VLCD should be mandated for better postoperative outcomes.

An Investigation of Racial Disparities in Weight Loss Outcomes: Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Versus Sleeve Gastrectomy.

The current study aimed to test if racial disparities in weight loss outcomes between African American and Caucasian patients who underwent bariatric surgery were due to pre-surgical BMI differences. Primary data was collected from pre-surgical evaluations conducted at a midwestern hospital. A retrospective chart review was conducted of 136 patients. Patient age and race, type of procedure, and pre- and 1-year post-surgical BMI were collected. African American patients were less likely to undergo bariatric surgery compared with Caucasian patients. Caucasian patients undergoing Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) had a greater change in BMI compared with African American patients who underwent RYGB. Significant differences in weight loss outcomes were not found among patients who underwent the sleeve gastrectomy. Race was not related to pre-surgical BMI or procedure type. Despite pre-surgical BMI typically being higher among African American patients, this was not found in the current study. Pre-surgical BMI may not explain the racial disparities in weight loss post-bariatric surgery that are found between African American and Caucasian patients. Future studies should consider psychosocial, environmental, and cultural influences on racial disparities.
