Coherent control of interference processes in radiative decays

Possibility of coherent control of spontaneous emission from four- and five-level system in the laser radiation field is studied. The four-level system consists of two levels resonantly driven by laser radiation where either of levels may decay to a separate level. For such a system, we show that the presence of the second decay channel may deteriorate the destructive interference occurring in case of one decay channel because of Autler-Townes effect. The five-level diagram represents two two-level resonantly driven systems with the upper levels decaying to a common level. For this diagram, interference between the two decay channels takes place and it is partially or completely destructive or constructive depending on the initial conditions and on the mutual orientation of the transition dipole moments. It is shown that population transfer takes place by the same quantum vacuum via spontaneous emission. The populations are shown to have damping oscillatory nature.

Induced multiphoton adiabatic passage and coherent control of population transfer in quantum systems with high-energy transitions

A scheme for coherent population transfer via four quantum states in atomic or molecular systems of high-energy transitions by induced multiphoton adiabatic passage (IMAP) is proposed. The nonperturbative multiphoton resonant theory of interaction of such quantum systems with the two strong laser fields of different frequencies is developed and the possibility of coherent control of population in high-energy quantum structures by IMAP is shown.

Coherent control of acoustic vibrations in metal nanoparticles and thin films with sequences of femtosecond pulses: Harmonic-oscillator model

A harmonic oscillator model is used to demonstrate the possibility of coherent control of acoustic vibrations of metal nanoparticles and thin films with sequences of femtosecond laser pulses. When the interval between the pulses in such a sequence is chosen equal to the oscillation period of the expansion mode of a nanoscale system, the relevant acoustic vibrations can be excited in a resonant and selective way. Sequences of femtosecond pulses with picosecond time intervals between the pulses are shown to be ideally suited for a resonant excitation and coherent control of acoustic modes of silver nanoparticles.
