Time domain dielectric relaxation studies of amphiphilics in solution state

In liquid state, the amphiphilic molecules of acids and alcohols form a two dimensional array of an air–water interface. The structure of amphiphilics and the affinity of polar groups towards the environmental dipoles determines the stability of the two dimensional array. The amphiphilics substances are related to the formation of monolayers and multilayers in various substrates. The majority of the carboxylic acids with the low alkyl group are said to exist in a dimeric form of an open or closed structure. The structure of the film and the reorientation of hydrophobic tails can be modified by adjusting the surface pressure. Many experimental methods are available to characterize the degree of orientation. A simple, rapid and nondestructive measuring technique, such as dielectric spectroscopy provides information about the dielectric response of materials to electromagnetic fields. The amphiphilic acids of interest with useful optical, electrical and biological properties are characterized by manipulating the head group interactions of the materials. The dielectric polarization studies of the orientation ordering are important in the context of co-operative reorientation of the head group structure. We report here the results of our measurement of the complex dielectric constants ε' and ε" over a frequency range of 10MHz to 30GHz using the time domain reflectometry (TDR) technique of stearic acid in benzene at various temperatures of 30°C, 25°C, 20°C, and 15°C. The dielectric relaxation time (τ0) for carboxylic acids for this temperatures are not found to be reported so far. The average relaxation time (τ0) shows double for the normal acids. The long chain amphiphilic acids may have the same possibility of bending and twisting orientation. The result interprets in terms of dynamic response of the polarization field of the medium which is due to the frictional motion of the long chain amphiphilics, which adds to stokes viscosity friction.

Dielectric studies of self-assembling amphiphiles: Part II: Microwave dielectric relaxation of long chain amphiphilic acids and alcohols

The stability criteria of amphiphiles are related to the kinetics of formation of monolayers and multilayers in various substrates. Interesting materials with useful optical, electrical and biological properties were synthesized in recent times by manipulating the head group interactions of the amphiphiles. The dielectric polarization studies of the orientational ordering are important in the context of the co-operative reorientation of the head group structures. We report here the results of our measurement of the complex dielectric constants ε′ and εʺ at 8.35 GHz of stearic acid, arachidic acid, tetradecanol and hexadecanol in carbon tetrachloride at 303 K. The data for relaxation time for such amphiphiles are rare. The value of the average relaxation time τ 0 for the O–H group is almost twice that for normal alcohols and acids. These long chain molecules have the possibility of bending and twisting besides rotation. A ‘Crankshaft’ type of motion is also envisaged by several authors. Our results are interpreted in terms of the dynamic response of the polarization field of the medium due to the frictional motion of the long chain amphiphiles which adds to Stokes viscous friction. The expected increase of enthalpy of activation energy of 1 kJ mol − 1 for every addition of CH 2 group is not observed.

Factors Controlling Transport Properties of Interfaces in High-Tc Superconductors

AbstractA comprehensive understanding of the transport properties of interfaces in high-Tc cuprates been obtained by considering their microstructure, the possibility of bending of the electronic band structure in these materials, and the predominant dx2-y2 -symmetry of the order parameter in most high-Tc cuprates. These factors are of central importance for the critical current density and the normal state resistivity of grain boundaries and their dependencies on boundary misorientation and on applied magnetic and electrical fields. In addition, some of these factors play an important role for the transport properties of other interfaces involving high-Tc superconductors, such as superconductors-normal metal contacts.Based on the improved understanding of the mechanisms controlling interface transport properties, we have been able to meet a long-standing challenge in high-Tc superconductivity and have increased the critical current densities of grain boundaries by large factors, using appropriate doping.

Extending Laser Bending for the Generation of Convex Shapes

A summary about the present process understanding of the laser bending technology is given. Three different bending mechanisms are distinguished. Experimental results showing that at certain parameters an instability behaviour can occur are discussed. A bending mechanism is suggested which explains the stability behaviour. It is shown that laser bending can be extended in order to generate convex shapes, which means a bending away from the laser beam. The possibility of bending towards the laser beam or of bending away from the laser beam opens new ranges of applications, two of which are introduced in this paper.

Guided radiation beams in free electron lasers

In a free electron laser (FEL), the radiation field, wiggler field and electron beam resonantly couple and modify the refractive index in the vicinity of the electron beam, such that the radiation beam will tend to focus upon the electron beam. From the radiation envelope equation derived from the source dependent expansion (SDE) method of solving the 3-D wave equation in FELs, conditions and parameters necessary to achieve guided radiation beams (constant radius) in the Compton exponential gain regime are obtained for FELs driven by either induction linacs or rf linacs with various transverse profiles of the electron beam. From the efficiency of the guided radiation beam, the trapping potential of the ponderomotive potential prior to saturation and the required beam quality of the electron beam can be obtained. The wiggler field could be tapered to further increase the operating efficiency. The possibility of bending or steering radiation beams in FELs is discussed and a condition necessary for radiation guiding along a curved electron beam orbit is obtained.

Compressibility of Vitreous Silica

To explain the increase of compressibility of vitreous silica with pressure, it is assumed that there is a possibility of bending of the Si—O—Si lines in the structure. Calculations of network energies show that this is a reasonable assumption. Because of the randomness of the glass structure, it is not possible at this time to obtain more than a qualitative agreement between calculated and experimental values.
