Interspecific recognition based on cuticular hydrocarbons mediates reproduction control in aphids

The preset study tested whether an aphid species can control its reproduction by recognizing the presence and density of a rival species. Acyrthosiphon pisum and Megoura crassicauda often coexist on the same leguminous plant. We established clonal colonies from each species and mixed colonies with one A. pisum and one M. crassicauda adult. There were no significant differences in the population growth patterns of the two species at 20 °C. However, mixed colonies increased faster and attained larger colony sizes than the clonal colonies. Thus, positive interspecific interactions were confirmed. A mixed colony was dominated by the members of a clone that produced a greater number of newborns in the initial stage, irrespective of the species. Thus, we confirmed the priority effect in the interspecific competition. To simulate the priority effect, 15 glass beads coated with the hexane extract of M. crassicauda aphids were attached to a cut leaf, to which one A. pisum adult was transferred. The presence of the hexane extract of M. crassicauda greatly reduced the reproductive rate of A. pisum adults. We conclude that aphids can control their reproduction by evaluating the relative density of rivals to fellow aphids based on the cuticular hydrocarbons.

Dissolved oxygen shapes the archaeal communities in the seawater of Changjiang Estuary

Archaea play a significant role in regulating the biogeochemical processes of marine ecosystems. In this study, the high-throughput sequencing was used to explore the archaeal communities in the seawater from the hypoxic and non-hypoxic zones of the Changjiang Estuary. Thaumarchaeota dominated the archaeal communities in the hypoxic zones (bottom water), and Euryarchaeota were mainly distributed in the non-hypoxic zones (surface water). However, the diversity and richness of the archaeal communities showed no obvious difference in the hypoxic and non-hypoxic zones. Moreover, Thaumarchaeota and Nitrosopumilales were positively correlated with salinity, but negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen (DO) and temperature. Temperature, phosphorus, and dissolved oxygen had significant correlations with archaeal richness, while ammonia nitrogen was correlated with archaeal diversity. The networks of archaeal communities possessed a high proportion of positive interspecific interaction and revealed that the Marine Group II species may play distinct roles in both hypoxic and non-hypoxic zones. The current work assessed the influence of dissolved oxygen on the archaeal community patterns and network interaction, thereby illumining the community structure shift of archaea caused by the hypoxia phenomenon in the Changjiang Estuary, which laid a foundation for the future studies on the ecological functions of archaea in estuary ecosystems.

Negative and positive interspecific interactions involving jellyfish polyps in marine sessile communities.

Sessile marine invertebrates on hard substrates are one of the two canonical examples of communities structured by competition, but some aspects of their dynamics remain poorly understood. Jellyfish polyps are an important but under-studied component of these communities. We determined how jellyfish polyps interact with their potential competitors in sessile marine hard-substrate communities, using a combination of experiments and modelling. We carried out an experimental study of the interaction between polyps of the moon jellyfish Aurelia aurita and potential competitors on settlement panels, in which we determined the effects of reduction in relative abundance of either A. aurita or potential competitors at two depths. We predicted that removal of potential competitors would result in a relative increase in A. aurita that would not depend on depth, and that removal of A. aurita would result in a relative increase in potential competitors that would be stronger at shallower depths, where oxygen is less likely to be limiting. Removal of potential competitors resulted in a relative increase in A. aurita at both depths, as predicted. Unexpectedly, removal of A. aurita resulted in a relative decrease in potential competitors at both depths. We investigated a range of models of competition for space, of which the most successful involved enhanced overgrowth of A. aurita by potential competitors, but none of these models was completely able to reproduce the observed pattern. Our results suggest that interspecific interactions in this canonical example of a competitive system are more complex than is generally believed.

Positive interactions between corals and damselfish increase coral resistance to temperature stress.

By the century's end, many tropical seas will reach temperatures exceeding most coral species' thermal tolerance on an annual basis. The persistence of corals in these regions will, therefore, depend on their abilities to tolerate recurrent thermal stress. Although ecologists have long recognized that positive interspecific interactions can ameliorate environmental stress to expand the realized niche of plants and animals, coral bleaching studies have largely overlooked how interactions with community members outside of the coral holobiont shape the bleaching response. Here, we subjected a common coral, Pocillopora grandis, to 10 days of thermal stress in aquaria with and without the damselfish Dascyllus flavicaudus (yellowtail dascyllus), which commonly shelter within these corals, to examine how interactions with damselfish impacted coral thermal tolerance. Corals often benefit from nutrients excreted by animals they interact with and prior to thermal stress, corals grown with damselfish showed improved photophysiology (Fv /Fm ) and developed larger endosymbiont populations. When exposed to thermal stress, corals with fish performed as well as control corals maintained at ambient temperatures without fish. In contrast, corals exposed to thermal stress without fish experienced photophysiological impairment, a more than 50% decline in endosymbiont density, and a 36% decrease in tissue protein content. At the end of the experiment, thermal stress caused average calcification rates to decrease by over 80% when damselfish were absent but increase nearly 25% when damselfish were present. Our study indicates that damselfish-derived nutrients can increase coral thermal tolerance and are consistent with the Stress Gradient Hypothesis, which predicts that positive interactions become increasingly important for structuring communities as environmental stress increases. Because warming of just a few degrees can exceed corals' temperature tolerance to trigger bleaching and mortality, positive interactions could play a critical role in maintaining some coral species in warming regions until climate change is aggressively addressed.

Downstream resource leakage a necessary condition for the stress-gradient hypothesis in processing chain commensalisms

The stress-gradient hypothesis (SGH) in ecology predicts that the strength and frequency of positive interspecific interactions, including processing chain commensalisms (PCCs), increase with environmental stress. Although observed in some empirical PCC studies, a recent theoretical study of PCCs using a consumer–resource-type model found that, given the model’s assumptions, the SGH never occurs. To investigate if this is a true reflection of PCCs or merely an artefact of the model, in this study, we modified this earlier model formulation by incorporating generalized, monotonically increasing resource uptake functions in place of linear functions, and added a term to represent the spontaneous leakage of the downstream resource to the environment. Mathematical analyses of the model revealed two key insights: 1) the specific algebraic forms of the functional responses of the species in a PCC do not affect the long-term behaviour of the system; 2) the SGH can occur in a facilitative interaction only if the consumer-independent leakage rate of the downstream resource exceeds the consumer-independent input rate. The first insight shows that the outcomes of consumer–resource interactions are robust to details of the functional responses when the functional responses are monotonically increasing, while the second insight shows that the SGH is not a universal feature of positive interactions but instead holds only under a well-defined set of conditions which may vary between PCC interactions and the environmental contexts in which they take place.

New Insight Into the Mechanism of Ecological Effects of Artificial Habitats: Elucidating the Relationship Between Protists Associated With Artificial Reefs and Adjacent Seawater

Artificial habitat deployment can restore natural habitats or supplement existing natural habitats. The effect of resource proliferation and protection is obvious. However, few reports have addressed the biological community association between artificial habitats and adjacent environments. Here, Illumina sequencing of 18S rDNA was performed, and the diversity, community structure, and co-occurrence networks of protists in different layers of artificial reefs (ARs) and adjacent seawater (WAR) were described to verify that constructing ARs in Bailong Pearl Bay improves local spatial heterogeneity and functional diversity. In terms of the degree of species interaction, the protist communities were ranked as follows: surface and bottom of WAR > ARs and WAR > different layers of ARs. The α-diversity of protists associated with ARs and WAR decreased with an increase in depth. Protist diversity was greater in WAR than in ARs. β-Diversity analysis revealed significant differences in protist community structure between WAR and ARs (P < 0.05), and the upper layers of ARs and the middle or bottom layers of ARs differed. The key topological features of protist networks showed more positive interspecific interactions in the AR-associated protist community, a higher degree of niche differentiation, and higher complexity and stability. The keystone protists in the bottom seawater layer displayed community functions that were biased toward initial fixation in the ocean carbon cycle. The AR-associated protist community tended to participate in carbon transfer in the food chain and decomposition and utilization of dissolved organic matter (DOM). This study revealed significant differences in protist community structure between ARs and the adjacent environment, and the ecological functions of the key phyla were found to be related. In conclusion, protist communities in WAR may provide food sources for AR-associated heterotrophic protists. A variety of key phyla associated with ARs have biological roles in the carbon pump via their ecological characteristics.

Mimicry can drive convergence in structural and light transmission features of transparent wings in Lepidoptera.

Müllerian mimicry is a positive interspecific interaction, whereby co-occurring defended prey species share a common aposematic signal. In Lepidoptera, aposematic species typically harbour conspicuous opaque wing colour patterns with convergent optical properties among co-mimetic species. Surprisingly, some aposematic mimetic species have partially transparent wings, raising the questions of whether optical properties of transparent patches are also convergent, and of how transparency is achieved. Here, we conducted a comparative study of wing optics, micro and nanostructures in neotropical mimetic clearwing Lepidoptera, using spectrophotometry and microscopy imaging. We show that transparency, as perceived by predators, is convergent among co-mimics in some mimicry rings. Underlying micro- and nanostructures are also sometimes convergent despite a large structural diversity. We reveal that while transparency is primarily produced by microstructure modifications, nanostructures largely influence light transmission, potentially enabling additional fine-tuning in transmission properties. This study shows that transparency might not only enable camouflage but can also be part of aposematic signals.

Environmental connectivity controls diversity in soil microbial communities

Interspecific interactions are thought to govern the stability and functioning of microbial communities, but the influence of the spatial environment and its structural connectivity on the potential of such interactions to unfold remain largely unknown. Here we studied the effects on community growth and microbial diversity as a function of environmental connectivity, where we define environmental connectivity as the degree of habitat fragmentation preventing microbial cells from living together. We quantitatively compared growth of a naturally-derived high microbial diversity community from soil in a completely mixed liquid suspension (high connectivity) to growth in a massively fragmented and poorly connected environment (low connectivity). The low connectivity environment consisted of homogenously-sized miniature agarose beads containing random single or paired founder cells. We found that overall community growth was the same in both environments, but the low connectivity environment dramatically reduced global community-level diversity compared to the high connectivity environment. Experimental observations were supported by community growth modeling. The model predicts a loss of diversity in the low connectivity environment as a result of negative interspecific interactions becoming more dominant at small founder species numbers. Counterintuitively for the low connectivity environment, growth of isolated single genotypes was less productive than that of random founder genotype cell pairs, suggesting that the community as a whole profited from emerging positive interspecific interactions. Our work demonstrates the importance of environmental connectivity for growth of natural soil microbial communities, which aids future efforts to intervene in or restore community composition to achieve engineering and biotechnological objectives.

Distribution and conservation status of Camellia longzhouensis (Theaceae), a critically endangered plant species endemic to southern China

Camellia longzhouensis (Theaceae) is an endemic evergreen shrub or small tree with a distribution restricted to South China. It is listed as Grade-II in the National Key Protected Wild Plants List. In this study, we surveyed its distribution, examined its population structure, identified factors affecting its survival, and reassessed its extinction risk. We found that C. longzhouensis was only distributed in the Nonggang National Nature Reserve and the surrounding area. Its individuals only grew under the secondary forest canopy in the karst mountain. A total of 58 individuals of C. longzhouensis in three sub-populations were found. Soil fertility and understory light availability were the main habitat factors influencing the survival of C. longzhouensis. Anthropogenic disturbances and reproductive obstacles have caused a low seed-setting rate, poor seedling survival, and a lack of adult plants of C. longzhouensis in the natural habitat. The population structure of C. longzhouensis is spindle-shaped, indicating poor natural regeneration and inhibited seedling recruitment. Cleistanthus petelotii had a significant positive interspecific interaction with C. longzhouensis in the community. Based on the information obtained here and IUCN criterion C2ai, we recommend that C. longzhouensis be categorized in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List as Critically Endangered. We also developed a comprehensive protection strategy, consisting of in situ conservation, ex situ conservation, reintroduction, and commercial utilization. This strategy can be readily applied to protect other endangered plants with economic value in karst poor regions.

Competition and facilitation co-regulate the spatial patterns of boreal tree species in Kanas of Xinjiang, northwest China

Competition and facilitation are the primary mechanisms structuring communities and driving spatial distribution patterns of trees. However, we still know relatively little about the underlying effects of these two processes on natural forest ecosystems and this is particularly true in boreal forest ecosystems. Our lack of understanding regarding the factors regulating spatial patterns of boreal forest ecosystems is important given their role in carbon sequestration and timber products. Using data from a 12-ha boreal forest dynamic plot in the Kanas Nature Reserve of Northwest China, we assessed the population distribution and diameter at breast height (DBH) structure, as well as intra- and interspecific interactions, of the four most abundant tree species (Larix sibirica, Picea obovata, Pinus sibirica, and Betula pendula). Our results indicate that the spatial distribution patterns of these species were aggregated at small spatial scales because of dispersal limitation, and that the degree of aggregation decreased with increasing spatial scale. Aggregation was the highest for the less common species (i.e., B. pendula pendula). Saplings (1 cm ≤ DBH < 5 cm) and juveniles (5 cm ≤ DBH < 15 cm) were more aggregated than larger individuals (DBH ≥ 15 cm). Only P. obovata adults (DBH ≥ 15 cm) showed a regular (i.e., hyperdispersed) distribution because of the intense intraspecific competition at small scales (i.e., <5 m). Intraspecific interactions between individuals were either positive or not significant. In terms of interspecific competition, there were significant negative associations among large (DBH ≥ 15 cm) and small adults (5 cm ≤ DBH < 15 cm) for the two shade tolerant species (P. obovata and P. sibirica). In contrast, we observed positive interspecific interactions between individuals of different DBH classes and different shade tolerance species. Thus, most of the intra- and interspecific interactions showed positive or no significant correlations. Negative associations were generally less common than positive associations both within and between species. Our results show that competition and facilitation simultaneously influence the spatial patterns of plants in this community. Moreover, positive interactions between tree individuals in this temperate region are likely to be more common than competitions for survival and growth of tree stems.

Broadleaf trees mediate chemically the growth of Chinese fir through root exudates

Tree performance in mixed-species forest plantations is ultimately the net result of positive and negative interactions among species. Despite increasing knowledge of interspecific interactions, relatively little is known about the chemical mechanisms mediating such interactions. We constructed mixed planting systems with two species including Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook) and broadleaf species Cinnamomum camphora L. Presl, Elaeocarpus decipiens Hemsl, Liquidambar formosana Hance, or Michelia macclurei Dandy. Based on a series of manipulative experiments, we investigated the performance of Chinese fir and analyzed root placement patterns and the composition of main soil microbial groups. The broadleaf trees influenced the growth of Chinese fir roots more than the growth of shoots. Furthermore, C. camphora roots released allelochemicals into the soil environment, resulting in growth inhibition of Chinese fir and changes in main soil microbial groups. However, when grown with E. decipiens and M. macclurei, the growth of Chinese fir was consistently promoted. It responded by enhancing its root growth and altering root behavior, resulting in a shift from growth inhibition to chemical facilitation. These positive inter-specific interactions also stimulated changes in the composition of soil microbes. Complementary experiments indicated that non-toxic signaling molecules in the root exudates of E. decipiens and M. macclurei may be responsible for mediating positive root-root interactions and regulating the composition of main soil microbial groups. Thus, our study demonstrated that broadleaf species chemically mediate the growth of Chinese fir through root exudates. Such a novel mechanism offers many implications and applications for reforestation programs undertaken to rehabilitate forest plantations that suffer from declining productivity related to densely planted monocultures.

Living with roommates in a shared den: Spatial and temporal segregation among semifossorial mammals

Positive interspecific interactions in animal communities (i.e. den sharing) have long been overlooked in animal ecology. The assessment of spatiotemporal overlap among species living within the same burrow system is paramount to explain their strategies of interspecific coexistence. We studied spatiotemporal behavioural patterns of coexistence among four den-sharing mammal species (i.e. the crested porcupine Hystrix cristata, the Eurasian badger Meles meles, the red fox Vulpes vulpes and the European pine marten Martes martes), inhabiting a hilly area of central Italy. Intensive camera trapping (September 2015-September 2018) was used to estimate the interspecific overlap of both temporal and spatial activity patterns for all species combinations. An extensive nocturnal temporal overlap was recorded among all the species, except the diurnal pine marten. However, crested porcupines were mostly active in the darkest nights, whereas bright moonlight enhanced the hunting success of the red fox. Activity of badgers was limited in bright nights only during cold months, when predation pressure and poaching risk were the highest. Crested porcupines avoided spatial sharing outside the den with both nocturnal carnivores, particularly during the winter, when its cubs are in the den. Overlap in ranging areas and activity rhythms between the red fox and the Eurasian badger may be promoted by a remarkable food niche partitioning. Conversely, spatiotemporal overlap between red foxes and pine martens suggested a significant interspecific spatial partitioning, due to the overlap in feeding habits. Den-sharing represents a form of positive interspecific interaction which may limit energy waste and increase local species diversity and densities. Species using the same burrow system may show both spatial and temporal niche partitioning throughout the year, thus allowing a non-competitive coexistence.

High frequency of positive interspecific interactions revealed by individual species–area relationships for tree species in a tropical evergreen forest

ABSTRACTBackground: The spatial structure of tree species diversity may identify the relative importance of positive, negative and neutral interactions among species and the processes that maintain high species richness in tropical forests.Aims: We tested the hypothesis that common species accumulate higher species richness at small spatial scales than expected from a null model of complete spatial randomness (CSR) and that the strength of this signal decays when tested against a null model reflects plot-wide environmental heterogeneity.Methods: We computed individual species–area relationships (ISARs) to examine the accumulation of tree species richness with distance around 18 abundant species on a fully mapped 2-ha plot in a tropical evergreen forest in Vietnam.Results: Thirteen species displayed ISARs suggesting that they accumulated a higher than expected species richness of trees when tested against a null model assuming CSR, but this fell to eight species after accounting for non-random species distributions using a heterogeneous Poisson null model. Only the pioneer species Macaranga denticulata showed lower than expected species richness in local neighbourhoods when tested against the heterogeneous Poisson null model.Conclusions: Environmental heterogeneity contributes to the distribution of species diversity at small spatial scales and must be accounted for using an appropriate null model when analysing point pattern data. The accumulation of species richness in the local neighbourhoods of eight species may reflect facilitation, species herd protection, habitat heterogeneity or overlap in frugivore diets. Low species richness in local neighbourhoods surrounding M. denticulata stems reflect its early colonisation of canopy gaps.

Interactions among competing nematode species affect population growth rates.

Investigations of the interplay of organisms in an ecological community are a prerequisite to understanding the processes that shape the structures of those communities. Among several types of interactions, interest in the positive interactions of species that compete for the same resource has grown, as they may provide a mechanism enabling coexistence. In the laboratory experiment described herein, the effects of interspecific interaction on the population growth of two bacterial-feeding nematode species, Panagrolaimus cf. thienemanni and Poikilolaimus cf. regenfussi, were investigated. Specifically, we asked: (1) whether there is an interspecific interaction between organisms competing for a mutual resource and (2) whether these interactions are altered by the competitors' initial densities and (3) their variable growth rates (induced by different food supplies). Each treatment initially contained 48 nematode individuals, but at different species ratios (48:0; 32:16; 24:24; 16:32; 0:48). The populations were provided with three different bacterial densities (108, 109, and 1010cellsml-1) as food. The data were analyzed using a generalized linear mixed model. The best-fitting model revealed a significant decline in population growth rates with an increasing species ratio, but depending on the food density and species. These results provide strong evidence for positive interspecific interactions that vary with both species density and food-supply level. They also suggest important roles for positive interspecific interactions in habitat colonization and in maintaining the coexistence of species in the same trophic group.

Geographically structured genetic variation in theMedicago lupulina–Ensifermutualism

Gene flow between genetically differentiated populations can maintain variation in species interactions, especially when population structure is congruent between interacting species. However, large-scale empirical comparisons of the population structure of interacting species are rare, particularly in positive interspecific interactions (mutualisms). One agriculturally and ecologically important mutualism is the partnership between legume plants and rhizobia. Through characterizing and comparing the population genomic structure of the legume Medicago lupulina and two rhizobial species (Ensifer medicae and E. meliloti), we explored the spatial scale of population differentiation between interacting partners in their introduced range in North America. We found high proportions of E. meliloti in southeastern populations and high proportions of E. medicae in northwestern populations. Medicago lupulina and the Ensifer genus showed similar patterns of spatial genetic structure (isolation by distance). However, we detected no evidence of isolation by distance or population structure within either species of bacteria. Genome-wide nucleotide diversity within each of the two Ensifer species was low, suggesting limited introduction of strains, founder events, or severe bottlenecks. Our results suggest that there is potential for geographically structured coevolution between M. lupulina and the Ensifer genus, but not between M. lupulina and either Ensifer species.

Cockles, barnacles and ascidians compose a subtidal facilitation cascade with multiple hierarchical levels of foundation species

Facilitation cascades occur when multiple foundation species in a community are involved in a hierarchy of positive interactions, and consist of a primary facilitator which positively affects secondary facilitators, each supporting a suit of dependent species. There is no theoretical limit to the number of levels in a facilitation cascade, yet the existence of more than two has rarely been examined. We manipulated biogenic substrate produced by a primary facilitator (cockle shells) and a secondary facilitator (barnacles and their empty tests) in a space-limited subtidal community to test the hypothesis that solitary ascidians would be the third-level facilitator. In the field, most ascidians were found on barnacles, and most barnacles occupied cockle shells. To produce this pattern, barnacles could nurse ascidians (a longer ‘facilitation chain’) or outcompete them from cockle shells (a shorter chain). Experimental results clearly supported the nursing hypothesis providing evidence for a facilitation cascade with three hierarchical levels of foundation species. Our findings confirm that like predation and competition, positive interspecific interactions nest into multi-tier hierarchies with numerous levels. While the number of foundation species should increase community stability and resilience as it increases diversity and reduces environmental stress, facilitation chain length may have the opposite effect.

Multi‐timescale interactions between pink and chum salmon catch per unit effort in the Bering Sea

AbstractBased on generalized linear models, interspecific interactions were identified between chum and pink salmon. In addition, the effects of sea surface temperature and location on the variability of catch per unit effort (CPUE) of chum salmon from gill‐net surveys carried out between 1972 and 2010 were investigated. In the optimal model, interspecific interactions between CPUEs of chum and pink salmon on a year scale were positive for approximately half of all years in the central Bering Sea. In addition, interspecific interactions on a multi‐year scale were positive in even‐numbered years. The effects of location on the CPUE of chum salmon were significant variables in the optimal model. The CPUEs of chum salmon located near the continental shelf in the Bering Sea were higher than those of other locations. This study provides new evidence of positive interspecific interactions between the CPUEs of chum and pink salmon. The results also suggest that the standardized CPUE of chum salmon from the gill‐net surveys reflects relative chum salmon abundance in the North Pacific Ocean in the following year.

Intra- and interspecific interactions of Scots pine and European beech in mixed secondary forests

By the mid successional stages, secondary forests of Scots pine in Europe are dominated by mixed stands of pioneer Scots pine and late-successional European beech. The objective of this study was to explore the interactions of pine and beech with their conspecific and heterospecific neighbours in these forests. To accomplish the objective, pine and beech trees were stem-mapped in forty 500 m2 plots randomly located within 18 mixed stands in Milomlyn Forest District, northern Poland. The interactions within and between the species were analysed through two structurally different univariate and bivariate second-order summary statistics, i.e. pair correlation function g(r) and mark correlation function kmm(r). Field measurements showed that the overstorey was dominated by even-aged pine, whereas uneven-aged beech was the only species in the understorey. Pine trees presented an aggregation, while beech trees exhibited a dispersed structure in all stands. In addition, pine trees showed strong attraction to beech trees at small spatial scales (0–2 m). Negative correlation was found between tree height and diameter at breast height of beech, while there was no correlation between height and diameter of pine trees. We conclude that pine trees exhibit negative intraspecific interactions at small spatial scales that are mostly driven by their competitive interactions. Beech trees show strong positive intraspecific interactions and form clumps within pine canopy cover. The strong positive interspecific interactions of pine and beech are the outcome of their different shade tolerance. Our results help to explain successful coexistence of pine and beech in the study site and highlight detailed tree-tree interactions of the species in mixed stands.

Quantifying how acquired interactions with native and invasive insects influence population growth rates of a non-indigenous plant

Non-native species often acquire novel interspecific interactions, which are central to several hypotheses of invasion success, including biotic resistance and invasional meltdown. However, the outcome of these interactions is not often linked with the demographic evidence based on the full life cycle of the species. The Philippine Ground Orchid (Spathoglottis plicata) has invaded Puerto Rico and has acquired both negative and positive interspecific interactions involving the native weevil Stethobaris polita and the invasive red fire ant Solenopsis invicta, respectively. We studied a population in the Rio Abajo Forest, and asked how these interactions affect population demography by using a combination of field, experimental and modelling approaches. Stage-structured matrix population models based on four years of field observations showed that the population of S. plicata is growing at a rate (λ) of 1.05 under natural conditions. When we modified fecundity values based on experimental exclusion of weevils and ants, the control treatment showed a similar λ. Excluding weevils increased λ to 1.20, whereas the exclusion of ants decreased λ to 1.03. When we incorporate demographic and environmental stochasticity in our models, exclusion of invasive red fire ants significantly reduces the orchid abundance over time. Although weevils offer some biotic resistance to S. plicata, these effects do not prevent orchid population growth and expansion. On the other hand, invasive red fire ants have a positive effect on the invasive orchid’s λ, partially supporting the invasional meltdown hypothesis. This study presents a method that allows one to combine opposing mechanisms of species interactions within the same quantitative framework, and the results highlight the importance of considering acquired plant–animal interactions and stochastic processes when evaluating the population growth rates and dynamics of invasive plants.

Enhanced facilitation at the extreme end of the aridity gradient in the Atacama Desert: a community-level approach.

Plant facilitation is now recognized as an important process in severe environments. However, there is still no agreement on how facilitation changes as conditions become increasingly severe. The classic stress gradient hypothesis (SGH) predicts a monotonic increase in facilitation, which rises in frequency as conditions approach the extreme end of the environmental gradient. However, few studies have evaluated the validity of the SGH at the community level, the level at which it was formulated. Moreover, few studies have tested the SGH at either extreme of the gradient, and very few have excluded the effect of livestock on community response to stress. In line with the SGH, we hypothesized that several spatial pattern summary statistics would change monotonically from the least to the most arid sites, indicating increasingly aggregated patterns. In this study, we performed an evaluation of the SGH both within communities of shrub species and across a large portion of the Atacama Desert, and we isolated the abiotic component of the SGH. Our environmental gradient covered an extreme aridity gradient (< 20-130 mm annual precipitation). To perform point pattern analysis, we established 13 sites with environmental conditions representing four distinct levels of this gradient. Further, we conducted species co-occurrence analyses at 19 sites along the gradient. Both sets of analyses showed stronger positive spatial associations among plants at the most extreme end of the gradient. This was true regardless of whether we included all individuals, only small individuals located around large ones, or individuals in species pairs. Moreover, species tended to show greater co-occurrence as environmental severity increased. This increase in aggregation in the plant community seems to correlate with an increase in the strength of positive interspecific interactions, rather than greater clustering within each species. These monotonic increases in species co-occurrence and spatial association in more severe environments are consistent with some of the predictions of SGH, and collectively these results suggest that as the climate becomes more arid, positive species pairs interactions tend to be prevalent in the community.
