Intensified surface chlorophyll responses to the Indian Ocean Dipole under greenhouse warming

The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) has been proposed to be a key driver of biological processes in the Indian Ocean (IO) in the present climate. Given the expected influence of global warming on both the properties of the IOD and the biogeochemistry within the IO, a key question arises: How will the relationship between the IOD and surface chlorophyll evolve in a warming climate? Here, utilizing simulations from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 Earth System models, our findings reveal a notable intensification in the IOD-chlorophyll relationship under greenhouse warming. This intensification is linked to an increase in surface chlorophyll during the June to November period of positive IOD years in the southeastern IO (SEIO). Interestingly, our analysis indicates a substantial rise in IOD-related chlorophyll levels in a warming climate, despite a marked decrease in IOD-induced upwelling in the SEIO. The shallower thermocline leads to an increase in the mean nutrient concentration in the subsurface layer, thereby facilitating an enhanced anomalous nutrient supply to the surface layer, which contributes to increased surface chlorophyll. Our study highlights the consequential effects of IOD on chlorophyll dynamics and underscores the need for improved coupled models to advance our understanding of biophysical interactions in the IO in response to global warming.

Assessment of vegetation variation and its response to ENSO and IOD in the semi-arid ecosystem of Western India

Abstract The variation in the vegetation pattern reflects the change in the regional environment. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data from 2000 to 2022 for the Upper Bhima sub-basin in Western India has been used to identify the response of vegetation to the El Niño-Southern Oscillations (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) events. As a novelty, the present study identifies the ENSO-sensitive and IOD-sensitive vegetation areas within the watershed using vegetation mean to difference anomalies. Monthly NDVI anomalies are used to determine sensitive pixels of vegetation using mean monthly NDVI. Local spatial autocorrelation (LISA) is performed to analyze the pattern of the NDVI anomalies and cluster maps are generated. The results of spatial variation show that NDVI is adversely affected in El Niño years. During La Niña years, the percentage area covered by dense vegetation is more than 80%, which is significantly higher than that of El Niño years in the monsoon and post-monsoon periods. Positive IOD years show significantly more sparse vegetation cover than negative IOD years. The results of LISA analysis show that the rainfall shadow zone in the study area has a cluster of negative sensitive pixels even in the monsoon and post-monsoon period except in negative IOD year.

A Comparison of Wave Spectra during Pre-Monsoon and Post-Monsoon Tropical Cyclones under an Intense Positive IOD Year 2019

The impact of Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) events on the generation and intensity of tropical cyclones under the influence of monsoons is explored. The standardized sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies are computed for the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon months for the Bay of Bengal (BOB) and Arabian Sea (AS) from 1971 to 2020 and relationships are analyzed with the frequency of tropical cyclones for the neutral, positive and negative IOD years. Ocean states are sensitive to cyclonic conditions exhibiting a complex spectral distribution of the wave energy. Due to a tropical cyclone, the surface waves remain under high wind forcing conditions for prolonged periods generating a huge amount of energy. The spectral wave model SWAN (Simulating WAves Nearshore) is used to generate the energy density spectra during FANI (26 April–5 May 2019), which was a pre-monsoon extreme severe cyclonic storm, and BULBUL (5–12 November 2019), which was a post-monsoon very severe cyclonic storm in the BOB region. This study aims to estimate the intensity of wave energy during tropical cyclones in the pre- and post-monsoon months for 2019 (an extremely positive IOD year).

El Nino/La Nina and IOD impact on Kharif season crops over western agro-climatic zones of India

Climate modes like ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation) and IOD (Indian Ocean Dipole) produce an impact on the monsoon rainfall over India. Monsoon rainfall is extremely important for the agriculture of our country. The impact of these climate modes on monsoon rainfall thus in turn affects the rain-fed crops (kharif). In this study, four kharif season crops namely rice (Oryza sativa), maize (Zea mays), pulses and sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) are chosen over four arid/semi-arid agro-climatic zones of western India to study the effect of the climate modes on selected crops. The detailed analysis has been carried out to show the impact of rainfall in the El Nino/La Nina (phases of ENSO) and IOD years on the crop productions over the mentioned zones viz. (Central plateau and hills region; Western plateau and hills region; Gujarat hills and plains region; Western dry region) from 1966–2011. The results show that rice productions which require hot and humid conditions have been largely affected during drought years associated with El Nino which results in poor rainfall over all the zones. The production of pulses which does not require excess humid conditions shows marginal improvement during the neutral years or non-El Nino/non-La Nina years. Maize production seems to be better in La Nina years and worst in the El Nino years as La Nina years are responsible for good rainfall in all zones. El Nino years provide a minor impact on sugarcane productions in different zones. La Nina years are well suited for sugarcane production in all zones of our study as sugarcane requires a good amount of moisture. Positive IOD years are associated with poor crop productions as compared to negative IOD years mostly in all zones as most of the positive IOD years happen to be El Nino years. El Nino-rainfall relation being dominant than positive IOD-rainfall relation is, therefore, responsible for negative rainfall anomalies over the selected zones.

Seasonal Structure and Interannual Variation of the South Equatorial Current in the Indian Ocean

AbstractThe South Equatorial Current (SEC) in the south Indian Ocean (SIO) contributes to mass and heat exchanges among the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans. By analyzing satellite and in situ observations, this study examines the seasonal structure and the interannual variability of the SEC. The SEC is mainly part of the Seychelles‐Chagos thermocline ridge (SCTR) circulation during December to April, and is composed of the internal SCTR circulation and the intrusive Indonesian Throughflow during May to November. The SEC thus presents straight and meandering routes in these two periods, respectively. Furthermore, observations and model experiments show that the SEC's meandering route has obvious interannual variability, with exceptional northwestward extension in 1994, 1997, and 2019 during the past three decades. These exceptional routes are caused primarily by extreme positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) events, which induce a strengthened westward transport of the fresh water. These exceptional routes thus reflect the abnormal freshening in the SIO. Mooring observations reveal that a significant long‐term freshening event occurred in the SIO from August 2019 to at least July 2020. The persistent low salinity confirms that there is substantial water exchange in the SIO during the extreme positive IOD years.

Joint Pattern Analysis of Forest Fire and Drought Indicators in Southeast Asia Associated with ENSO and IOD

Land and forest fires in Southeast Asia often coincide with severe dry seasons in the specific region caused by the warm phase of an El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). This research aims to identify and quantify the ENSO–IOD effect on a joint pattern between the dry season and land and forest fires in Southeast Asia. This research provides a quantitative result which represents the ENSO–IOD’s impact in Southeast Asia for hotspots, dry spells, and precipitation anomalies. The methods used in this research are singular value decomposition, probability density skill score, and coherence analysis. Cambodia, Myanmar, and Thailand gave a similar result with less than a 25% increasing severity in the hotspots from normal to either El Niño, positive IOD, or El Niño–positive IOD years. The maximum increase in hotspot severity in North Sumatra was 13.06% and happened during a weak El Niño and positive IOD. Meanwhile, South Sumatra had a maximum accumulation of more than 89% and Kalimantan had more than a 72% increase during the strong El Niño in 2015. Even though the relationship between the ENSO and IOD was inconsistent, the occurrence of both phenomena in the same year can lead to fires and need to be considered.

Observed tropical cyclone-driven cold wakes in the context of rapid warming of the Arabian Sea

ABSTRACT We present a detailed long-term (1997–2019) analysis of observed cyclone-induced surface cooling (or cold wake) in the Arabian Sea. Here, the analysis is performed for 33 cyclones that drove significant cooling at the sea surface in three different seasons: the pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon. Our study shows that cyclones can cool the sea surface up to 4.76° C after their passage, depending on the intensity, duration and other factors that contribute to cooling. The monsoon and pre-monsoon cyclones show stronger cooling, but the post-monsoon cyclones exhibit a longer duration (8–10 days) of cooling and slower recovery time (15 days). In general, the pre- and monsoon cyclones exhibit a strong positive correlation with the Latent Heat Flux, whereas the post-monsoon cyclones show a higher correlation with Ekman Pumping Velocity, wind stress and intensity of cyclones. The cold wake composite analysis for the El-Niño, La-Niña and Normal years shows that cyclone-induced cooling is similar in El-Niño and La-Niña years, and the cooling is more dominant during the negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) than that in the positive IOD years. Co-occurrence of positive IOD and La Niña events has led to more intense cyclones in recent decades. The power dissipation index, accumulated cyclone energy and oceanic heat content also show an increasing trend in AS and favour rapid intensification of cyclones. Since the drop in SST normally impedes cyclones from intensification, our study is important and the findings of this study will aid in tropical cyclone predictions. In response to rapid warming of Indian Ocean in recent decades, extreme events such as cyclones are expected to increase in the context of climate change.

Rainfall in uncoupled and coupled versions of the Met Office Unified Model over Central Africa: Investigation of processes during the September–November rainy season

AbstractAlthough climate models are important for making projections of future climate, little attention has been devoted to model simulation of the complex climate of Central Africa (CA). This study investigates rainfall biases through processes in three versions of the Met Office Unified Model over CA with both coupled and atmosphere‐only formulations for each version. The study shows that the models depict a wet (dry) bias over the eastern (coastal western) CA in the September–November season with the wet (dry) bias stronger in coupled (atmosphere‐only) models. Here, we explore potential regional to large‐scale causes of these biases. Results reveal that the overestimation of the simulated sinking branch of the Atlantic‐Congo zonal overturning cell is associated with a strong near‐surface temperature and pressure gradient between CA and the eastern Atlantic Ocean. This leads to strong low‐level westerlies (LLWs) which dry the coastal western CA and strengthen the intensity of the Congo basin cell. Over eastern CA, the wet bias is partially due to the misrepresentation in the strength of both African easterly jet components that shift the mid‐tropospheric moisture flux convergence southward favouring more convection south of the equator. Furthermore, the overestimation in the simulated width and intensity of the Congo basin cell is associated with a strong low‐level moisture convergence over eastern CA which contributes to more precipitation. Remote contributions to the wet bias come from both the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans. The simulated Atlantic‐Congo zonal overturning circulation dries the coast through its overestimated lower branch (LLWs) which moves further into the continent and advects more moisture to the eastern CA. In the meantime, during positive Indian Ocean Dipole years, the advected moisture from the Indian Ocean to the CA region is overestimated in models, much more in coupled models and contributes to the eastern CA wet bias.

Evolution mechanism of contrasting phases of consecutive IOD events from 1994 to 1998

The Dipole Mode Index (DMI), an Index used to represent the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), shows a back to back occurrence of positive and negative IOD events during the period 1994 to 1998. The year 1994 was a strong positive IOD year and was followed by a strong negative IOD in 1996. The positive IOD in 1997 and negative IOD in 1998 were co-occurred with the strong El-Nino and strong La-Nina, respectively. In the present study, we have looked into the evolution of consecutive IOD events during the period 1994 to 1998 and analyzed the differences in their formation, features and association with Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall (ISMR) for various homogenous regions of the Indian subcontinent. We have found that the El-Nino and La-Nina enhances the IOD-induced positive SST anomalies in the western and eastern parts of the Indian Ocean during the co-occurred years, respectively. The evolution of positive IOD in 1997 is driven by the strong easterly wind anomalies associated with strong El-Nino. The positive anomalies of SST in the western equatorial Indian Ocean is maintained by the El-Nino which results in the long life span of positive IOD in the year 1997 than that of pure positive IOD year 1994. The westward propagating Rossby wave generated due to PIOD is maintained by strong El-Nino in the year 1997. The vertical dynamics, represented by D20, showed minor differences during the pure and co-occurred IOD events. The positive IOD years with El-Nino had good correlation with the Peninsular India and Central North East India regions rainfall. Since we have used only limited samples or cases under the different categories, our present results are preliminary in nature.

Seasonal Precipitation Variability and Non-Stationarity Based on the Evolution Pattern of the Indian Ocean Dipole over the East Asia Region

Non-linear behavioral links with atmospheric teleconnections were identified between the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) mode and seasonal precipitation over East Asia (EA) using statistical models. The analysis showed that the lower the lag time, the higher the correlation; more than a two-fold correlation for non-linear regression with a kernel density estimator than for the linear regression method. When the IOD peaked, a pattern of significant reductions in seasonal precipitation during the negative IOD period occurred throughout the Korean Peninsula (KP). The occurrence of the positive IOD was in line with the El Niño phenomenon and generated greater seasonal precipitation than only the positive IOD, which takes place from March to May. This change occurred more in the cold tongue El Niño than the warm pool El Niño, inducing much higher spring precipitation throughout the KP. When negative IODs and La Niña coincided, there was slightly greater precipitation from March to May compared to the sole occurrence of negative IODs. In positive (negative) IOD years, there was anti-cyclonic (cyclonic) circulation in the South China Sea (SCS), helping to transport moisture to EA. The composite precipitation anomalies in the positive (negative) IOD years show above (below) normal precipitation in southern China. In contrast, other parts of the EA experienced drier (humid) signals than normal years. In positive IOD years, the anti-cyclonic circulation strength of the Bay of Bengal and the SCS continued until autumn and spring of the following year. This shows possible remote connections between climate events related to the tropical Indian Ocean and variations in precipitation over EA.

Trends and Variabilities of Thunderstorm Days over Bangladesh on the ENSO and IOD Timescales

Thunderstorms (TS) are one of the most devastating atmospheric phenomena, which causes massive damage and adverse losses in various sectors, including agriculture and infrastructure. This study investigates the spatiotemporal variabilities of TS days over Bangladesh and their connection with El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). The TS, ENSO and IOD years’ data for 42 years (1975–2016) are used. The trend in TS days at the spatiotemporal scale is calculated using Mann Kendall and Spearman’s rho test. Results suggest that the trend in TS days is positive for all months except December and January. The significant trends are found for May and June, particularly in the northern and northeastern regions of Bangladesh. In the decadal scale, most of the regions show a significant upward trend in TS days. Results from the Weibull probability distribution model show the highest TS days in the northeastern region. The connection between TS days and ENSO/IOD indicates a decrease in TS activities in Bangladesh during the El Niño and positive IOD years.

Analysis of Drought-Sensitive Areas and Evolution Patterns through Statistical Simulations of the Indian Ocean Dipole Mode

In this study, we investigated extreme droughts in the Indochina peninsula and their relationship with the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) mode. Areas most vulnerable to drought were analyzed via statistical simulations of the IOD based on historical observations. Results of the long-term trend analysis indicate that areas with increasing spring (March–May) rainfall are mainly distributed along the eastern coast (Vietnam) and the northwestern portions of the Indochina Peninsula (ICP), while Central and Northern Laos and Northern Cambodia have witnessed a reduction in spring rainfall over the past few decades. This trend is similar to that of extreme drought. During positive IOD years, the frequency of extreme droughts was reduced throughout Vietnam and in the southwestern parts of China, while increased drought was observed in Cambodia, Central Laos, and along the coastline adjacent to the Myanmar Sea. Results for negative IOD years were similar to changes observed for positive IOD years; however, the eastern and northern parts of the ICP experienced reduced droughts. In addition, the results of the statistical simulations proposed in this study successfully simulate drought-sensitive areas and evolution patterns of various IOD changes. The results of this study can help improve diagnostic techniques for extreme droughts in the ICP.

Spatiotemporal Variability of Remote Sensing Ocean Net Primary Production and Major Forcing Factors in the Tropical Eastern Indian and Western Pacific Ocean

Based on widely used remote sensing ocean net primary production (NPP) datasets, the spatiotemporal variability of NPP is first analyzed over the tropical eastern Indian and western Pacific Ocean for the period 1998–2016 using the conventional empirical orthogonal function (EOF), the lead–lag correlation and the ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) technique. Barnett and Preisendorfer’s improved Canonical Correlation Analysis (BPCCA) is also applied to derive covariability patterns of NPP with major forcing factors of the chlorophyll a concentration (Chla), sea surface temperature (SST), sea level anomaly (SLA), ocean rainfall (Rain), sea surface wind (Wind), and current (CUR) under climate changes of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). We find that: (1) The first two seasonal EOF modes capture significant temporal and meridional NPP variability differences, as NPP reaches peaks approximately three months later in the western Pacific Ocean than that of in the eastern Indian Ocean. (2) The second and third interannual EOF modes are closely related with ENSO with a two-month lag and synchronous with IOD, respectively, characterized by southwesterly positive anomaly centers during positive IOD years. (3) NPP presents different varying tendencies and similar multiscale oscillation patterns with interannual and interdecadal cycles of 2~3 years, 5~8 years, and 9~19 years in subregions of the Bay of Bengal, the South China Sea, the southeastern Indian Ocean, and the northwestern Pacific Ocean. (4) The NPP variability is strongly coupled with negative SST, SLA, and Rain anomalies, as well as positive Chla, Wind and CUR anomalies in general during El Niño/positive IOD years. The results reveal the diversity and complexity of large-scale biophysical interactions in the key Indo-Pacific Warm Pool region, which improves our understanding of ocean productivity, ecosystems, and carbon budgets.

Interannual variability and characteristics of the East India Coastal Current associated with Indian Ocean Dipole events using a high resolution regional ocean model

The characteristics and variability of the East India Coastal Current (EICC), the western boundary current in the Bay of Bengal (BoB) during the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) years between 2006 and 2012 have been investigated using the high-resolution Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). The evolution of temperature, mixed layer depth (MLD), and seasonal basin scale circulation in the upper ocean simulated by the model agrees well with the observations. The EICC in BoB is characterized by a seasonal reversal flow: the poleward EICC during February−May and the equatorward EICC during August−December. A long-term simulation from 2006 to 2012 suggest that the circulation pattern, boundary current structure, and transport in the western BoB are completely different in positive and negative IOD years. As IOD is mainly phase-locked to the seasonal cycle with most significant influence in the Borel autumn, the equatorward EICC is affected during the IOD years. It is found that the strength of this EICC is ~ 5 Sv in October 2010 and a weaker EICC dominated by the presence of eddies is observed in October 2006. We also quantified the local and remote forcing effects on the variability of EICC and found that the seasonal coastal Kelvin waves (KWs) play a dominant role in the development of the EICC. During positive IOD year 2006, due the absence of second downwelling KW, the EICC is completely disorganized and dominated by the eddies, whereas in the negative IOD year 2010, the strong second downwelling KW plays a key role in developing organized and stable EICC in the western BoB.

ENSO and IOD analysis on the occurrence of floods in Pakistan

Different techniques have been used to discuss the existence of significant relation between the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). Various studies present their interaction and influence on the natural disasters (i.e. drought, flood, etc.) over large parts of the globe. This study uses a Markov chain method to investigate the relation between the ENSO and IOD for the period of 62 years (1950–2011) and aggregates their influence on the occurrence of floods in Pakistan. Both data sets show similarities in the formation of transition matrices and expected number of visits from one state to another. The strong values of 2-dimensional correlation and high self-communication of the transition states confirm the existence of a possible relation between ENSO and IOD data. Moreover, significant values of dependency and stationary test endorse the applicability of the Markov chain analyses. The independent analysis shows that strong events of both data sets are co-occurred in the same flood years. During the study period maximum number of floods was observed during summer monsoon season. However, further analysis shows that after 1970, Pakistan observed the highest percentage of floods occurred per year during El Nino, Non-ENSO and positive IOD years. These observations and results demonstrate that climate variability especially ENSO and IOD should be incorporated into disaster risk analyses and policies in Pakistan.

Interannual modulation of intraseasonal sea level variability along the southern coast of Java

The intraseasonal variability (ISV) of sea level anomalies (SLAs) along the southern coast of Java and its interannual modulation were studied based on a gridded SLA product produced from the Archiving, Validation, and Interpretation of Satellite Oceanography dataset. This ISV is induced by the propagation of intraseasonal Kelvin waves derived from the central equatorial Indian Ocean (EIO). Wavelet analysis and empirical mode decomposition of intraseasonal SLAs along the southern coast of Java showed interannual variability, with weaker ISV events during El Nino years and positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) years than during normal years. This interannual modulation of the ISV is influenced by the El Nino-Southern Oscillation teleconnection via the Walker Circulation and eastern Indian Ocean upwelling connected to IOD events. The anomalously weaker Walker Circulation during El Nino events generates anomalous surface easterlies over the central-eastern tropical Indian Ocean that produce upwelling Kelvin waves in the EIO and offshore water transport along the southern coasts of Sumatra and Java, resulting in negative SLAs along the southern coast of Java. These negative SLAs damp the positive SLAs induced by the eastward propagation of downwelling Kelvin waves from the central EIO during the following March–May of El Nino years. Similar features of SLAs and sea surface wind anomalies also occur during positive IOD years. Consequently, the sea level ISV along the southern coast of Java is weaker in El Nino and positive IOD years.

Influence of the South China Sea Biweekly Sea Surface Temperature on the South China Sea Summer Monsoon Especially during the Indian Ocean Dipole

ABSTRACTThe influence of the biweekly sea surface temperature (SST) in the South China Sea (SCS) on the SCS summer monsoon, especially during the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is presented using the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) SST and rainfall data for April to June from 1999 to 2013. During positive IOD (PIOD) years the biweekly SST anomalies over the SCS lead the rain anomalies by three days, with a significant correlation (r = 0.8, at the 99% confidence level), whereas during negative IOD (NIOD) years, the correlation is only 0.2. The biweekly SST is observed to influence the westward and northward propagating rainfall anomalies over the SCS and, hence, affect the SCS summer monsoon, especially during PIOD years. No such propagation was seen during NIOD years. The biweekly intraseasonal oscillation of SST in the SCS results in enhanced sea level pressure and surface shortwave radiation, especially during PIOD years. The potential findings here indicate that the biweekly SST in the SCS is strongly (weakly) influenced during PIOD (NIOD) years. Further, it is observed that SST in the SCS has a strong (weak) effect on the SCS summer monsoon by westward and northward propagation of rainfall, especially during PIOD (NIOD) years. When a PIOD or NIOD exists over the tropical Indian Ocean, the SCS SST will be strongly (r = 0.6, at the 99% confidence level) or weakly correlated with the residual index, respectively.

Modeling winter rainfall in Northwest India using a hidden Markov model: understanding occurrence of different states and their dynamical connections

A multiscale-modeling framework for daily rainfall is considered and diagnostic results are presented for an application to the winter season in Northwest India. The daily rainfall process is considered to follow a hidden Markov model (HMM), with the hidden states assumed to be an unknown random function of slowly varying climatic modulation of the winter jet stream and moisture transport dynamics. The data used are from 14 stations over Satluj River basin in winter (December–January–February–March). The period considered is 1977/78–2005/06. The HMM identifies four discrete weather states, which are used to describe daily rainfall variability over study region. Each state was found to be associated with a distinct atmospheric circulation pattern, with the driest and drier states, State 1 and 2 respectively, characterized by a lack of synoptic wave activity. In contrast, the wetter and wettest states, States 3 and 4 respectively, are characterized by a zonally oriented wave train extending across Eurasia between 20N and 40N, identified with ‘western disturbances’ (WD). The occurrence of State 4 is strongly conditioned by the El Nino and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) phenomena in winter, which is demonstrated using large-scale correlation maps based on mean sea level pressure and sea surface temperature. This suggests that there is a tendency of higher frequency of the wet days and intense WD activities in winter during El Nino and positive IOD years. These findings, derived from daily rainfall station records, help clarify the sequence of Northern Hemisphere mid-latitude storms bringing winter rainfall over Northwest India, and their association with potentially predictable low frequency modes on seasonal time scales and longer.

IOD influence on the early winter tibetan plateau snow cover: diagnostic analyses and an AGCM simulation

Using diagnostic analyses and an AGCM simulation, the detailed mechanism of Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) influence on the early winter Tibetan Plateau snow cover (EWTPSC) is clarified. In early winter of pure positive IOD years with no co-occurrence of El Nino, the anomalous dipole diabatic heating over the tropical Indian Ocean excites the baroclinic response in the tropics. Since both baroclinic and barotropic components of the basic zonal wind over the Arabian Peninsula increase dramatically in early winter due to the equatorward retreat of the westerly jet, the baroclinic mode excites the barotropic Rossby wave that propagates northeastward and induces a barotropic cyclonic anomaly north of India. This enables the moisture transport cyclonically from the northern Indian Ocean toward the Tibetan Plateau. The convergence of moisture over the plateau explains the positive influence of IOD on the EWTPSC. In contrast, the basic zonal wind over the Arabian Peninsula is weak in autumn. This is not favorable for excitation of the barotropic Rossby wave and teleconnection, even though the IOD-related diabatic heating anomaly in autumn similar to that in early winter exists. This result explains the insignificant (significant positive) partial correlation between IOD and the autumn (early winter) Tibetan Plateau snow cover after excluding the influence of ENSO. The sensitivity experiment forced by the IOD-related SST anomaly within the tropical Indian Ocean well reproduces the baroclinic response in the tropics, the teleconnection from the Arabian Peninsula, and the increased moisture supply to the Tibetan Plateau. Also, the seasonality of the atmospheric response to the IOD is simulated.

Observational evidence of lower-frequency Yanai waves in the central equatorial Indian Ocean

The analysis of long time-series current meter data from a mooring at 77 0 E and equator during 20032007 along with mean sea level anomaly (MSLA) data throws light on the occurrence of the lower frequency Yanai wave (24-40 day) in the upper water column of the central equatorial Indian Ocean (EIO) during the positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) years of 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007 and its absence during the negative IOD year of 2005. This result is in contrast with the earlier studies that observed only the higher frequency (biweekly period) Yanai wave in this region. We propose a new notion for the generation of the lower frequency Yanai wave in the upper central EIO due to the positive IOD phenomenon. The strong meridional current shear created by the northward shifting and strengthening of the westward flowing south equatorial current (SEC) associated with positive IOD and the eastward flowing southwest monsoon current provides energy for the generation of lower frequency Yanai waves. The vertical stratification of the water column appears to be responsible for the trapping of different frequency of Yanai wave with only the higher frequency Yanai wave in the region of lower pycnocline. During positive IOD the strongly stratified upper water column responds to the lower frequency Yanai wave while the deeper ocean (4000m) exhibited longer period (47-day) oscillation. The expected surface signature of Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) seems to be suppressed by strong easterlies during the positive IOD years.
