Dominant pests and pathogens of urban plantings in Kyiv: Species composition and prevalence

Impact of pests and pathogens on trees, along with air pollution, are one of the most important factors that determine tree health in parks, squares, boulevards and streets of Kyiv. The purpose of the study was to monitor populations of dominant pests and foci of pathogens of tree ornamental plantings in Kyiv from 2020 to 2022. The objects of the study were horse chestnut leaf miner Cameraria ohridella Deschka & Dimic., leaf blotch miner moth Acrocercops brongniardella F., Linden gall mite Eriophyes tiliae Nal., and powdery mildew of Common Oak Erysiphe alphitoides Griffon & Maubl. U. Braun&S. Takam. Using the route method and the E.E. Geschele scale, population indicators were evaluated for Cameraria ohridella, Acrocercops brongniardella and Eriophyes tiliae. It is found that the number of these species is increasing. It is showed that these pests are common on tree species Aesculus hippocastanum L., Quercus robur L., and Tilia cordata Mill., in street and urban plantings under the intense influence of abiotic and anthropogenic factors. In 2021, compared to 2020, the prevalence of Cameraria ohridella increased by 7 times, the distribution of Acrocercops brongniardella ranged from 76-78%, and powdery mildew damage to Common Oak, on average, is 3.41. According to the results of the study, it is identified that the populations of Acrocercops brongniardella and Eriophyes tiliae are in a stable condition and do not have substantial deviations by year, while the invasive species Cameraria ohridella is characterised by a substantial increase in prevalence and abundance, which means that it causes an intense weakening and decrease in the decorative effect of Chestnut in the city’s street plantings. Annual intensive powdery mildew Erysiphe alphitoides damage was noted at young ordinary plantings of Common Oak along the main roads of the metropolis. The potential reproduction opportunities of phytophagous insect populations are analysed. In practice, the obtained results can be used for pest management and further monitoring of tree health in street and urban plantings in Kyiv

Comparing the Performance of Hyphantria cunea (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) on Artificial and Natural Diets: Feasibility of Mass-Rearing on Artificial Diets.

In China, Hyphantria cunea (Drury) is an invasive phytophagous pest; it attacks nearly all species of defoliated trees. To develop integrated pest management programs (IPM) for H. cunea, we need to ensure the availability of insects by mass-rearing them on artificial diets under laboratory conditions. This study compared the growth characteristics, nutritional indices, growth indices, and digestive enzyme activity of insects reared on Pterocarya stenoptera C.DC (Fagales: Juglandaceae), the Chinese wingnut, and an artificial diet. We also investigated the correlation between diet components and growth indices using principal components analysis and Pearson correlation analysis. We found that mass-rearing of H. cunea on an artificial diet was feasible. It led to a shorter developmental period, with heavier larvae and pupae than natural diets. The principal components analysis indicated that the growth indices and α-Amylase were significantly positively associated with PC1, which explained 82.45% of the total data variability. Pearson correlation analysis showed a significant correlation between digestion, absorption parameters, and growth. Developing a mass-rearing program to produce H. cunea on an artificial diet will be valuable for improving IPM strategies. Understanding the mechanism of the responses of phytophagous insect populations to anthropogenic diet regulation can provide new ideas and methods for pest control.

Exploring multitrophic interactions in oilseed rape fields reveals the prevailing role of Carabidae.

In cropped fields, birds are often at the highest position in the food chain, feeding on pest arthropods and their intermediate predators in a process known as intraguild predation. The net effects of bird predation on phytophagous insect populations (feeding on plants) are difficult to predict without comprehensively describing prey–predator communities and their complex interplay. We sampled bird and arthropod communities in 30 oilseed rape fields in the spring of 2019 and 2020 in France. To assess the top‐down control of arthropods by birds, we used a vertebrate exclusion experiment. Using a taxonomic and functional trait‐based approach, we determined the direct and indirect influences of birds on arthropod predators and phytophagous insect populations in arable crops. We observed a negative relationship between the abundance of Carabidae and phytophagous insects but not with the other predator group suggesting the key role of Carabidae on phytophagous insects in agroecosystem. We found no statistical evidence of intraguild predation from birds toward intermediate predators. Despite the lack of overall effect of predator functional diversity on their prey, we highlighted the negative relationship between the functional complementarity (through functional evenness) of Carabidae and the abundance of phytophagous insects. This result suggests that functional complementarity between Carabidae species could help to reduce phytophagous insect populations. We analyzed the effect of agricultural practices on these multitrophic interactions, showing that pesticide intensity only had detrimental effects on Carabidae abundance, while the frequency of tillage did not affect the studied communities. Complementary indices used to depict communities are helpful to better understand the mechanisms underlying trophic relationships.

Cryptic local adaptation of the herbivorous ladybird beetle Henosepilachna pustulosa in the ability to use the thistle Cirsium boreale

AbstractLocal adaptation to different host plants is important in the diversification of phytophagous insects. Thus far, much evidence of the local adaptation of insects with respect to host use at the physiological level has been gathered from systems involving less mobile insects and/or divergent hosts such as plants belonging to different families or genera. On the other hand, the prevalence of such local adaptation of insects with moderate or high dispersal ability to the intraspecific variation of herbaceous hosts is largely unknown. In the present study, we examined the occurrence and degree of local adaptation of the herbivorous ladybird beetle Henosepilachna pustulosa (Kôno) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) to its primary host, the thistle Cirsium boreale Kitam. (Asteraceae), through reciprocal laboratory experiments using beetles and thistles from three locations with a range of approximately 200 km. Concerning the larval developmental ability, obvious patterns of local adaptation to the thistles from respective natal locations were detected, at least in some combinations of beetle populations. Similar tendencies were detected concerning adult feeding acceptance, although the statistical support was somewhat obscure. Overall, our results indicate that the degree of local adaptation of insect species with moderate dispersal ability to conspecific herbaceous hosts is occasionally as strong as that involving less mobile insects and/or heterospecific hosts, indicating the potential of such cryptic local adaptation to promote ecological/genetic differentiation of phytophagous insect populations.

The mechanisms which promote divergence in populations of phytophagous insects using alternative hosts depend on the characterization of hosts as different selective scenarios and the modeling of the demographic dynamics of the insect on those hosts. In the Bolivian Yungas forests, the treehopper Alchisme grossa (Hemiptera: Membracidae) utilizes two sympatric Solanaceae hosts, Brugmansia suaveolens and Solanum ursinum. On both hosts, females take care of nymphs during their development and adults use almost exclusively their natal host species. We characterized: 1) the performance of families (mother and nymphs) on both hosts, 2) maternal care across families and hosts, 3) biotic (herbivory, predators and parasites) and abiotic (temperature, relative humidity and luminosity) conditions across hosts and 4) demographic parameters of cohorts living under natural conditions on both hosts using matrix population modelling. The life cycle was longer on B. suaveolens than on S. ursinum. Microenvironmental abiotic and biotic traits differed between hosts. Nevertheless, performance did not differ between hosts and no differences between hosts were found in demographic parameters. None of the environmental variables explained the demographic parameters. Females performed maternal care with the same intensity on both hosts. Taken together with published data on the system, these results suggest that individuals of A. grossa in this study belong to a single population. Colonization of one of these hosts might be a recent event and evolutionary processes that promote ecological adaptation and hence demographic or performance differences have not yet become noticeable.

The cost of parasitism: High larval developmental mortality following attacks by a parasitoid fig wasp on a fig pollinating wasp

Parasitoids contribute to controlling phytophagous insect populations. Their action on a host is often measured by numbers of emerging adult parasitoids. However, parasitoid oviposition attempts may lead to host mortality and sometimes both host and parasitoid die during larval development. Therefore, establishing the effect of parasitoids on host populations requires estimating total effect of parasitoids.The communities of wasps developing in figs (the closed inflorescences of Ficus) have become a model system to investigate micro-hymenopteran interaction networks. A galled ovule produces either a single galling wasp or a single parasitoid providing a simple way to measure costs. However, some galled flowers produce no wasps. We show that about one quarter of galled flowers fail to produce pollinator offspring in the absence of parasitoids. In the presence of parasitoids, the number of empty galls is increased. For each emerging parasitoid, 1.9 pollinator larvae were killed. Hence, host mortality induced by parasitoids is much larger than actual parasitoid production, a feature documented in some other host-parasitoid interactions and that may be pervasive in nature.

The Importance of Integrated Pest Control on Wheat Crops Production, during 2015-2016, at Agricultural Research-Development Station Turda

In the wheat crops of central Transylvania a rich complex of phytophagous insects species is reported. Species of thrips, aphids, leafhoppers, flies, cereal leaf beetle and cereal bugs, affects the level of production and quality indicators of wheat grains. In the period of 2015-2016, various integrated pest control models have been applied, watching their effect on the production and quality indicators of wheat, based on applied insecticide treatments, in the experimental lots at ARDS Turda. The results on the quantified production parameters showed oscillations over previous multiannual values, due to the special climatic conditions of 2015 and 2016, to the density of entomophagous and phytophagous insect populations, influenced by the applied treatment system. It is noted that in the years 2015-2016, characterized as exceptional years, with unfavorable thermal and pluviometric conditions, with much higher values than the multiannual average, the gluten and protein content, zeleny index have lower values than in the previous years, at ARDS Turda. The specific annual climate characteristics have a major influence on the production and quality of wheat. Also, pest control strategies have a major impact on the production parameters and qualitative indicators of wheat.

Forest fragmentation may endanger a plant‐insect interaction: the case of the highly specialist native aphid Neuquenaphis staryi in Chile

Abstract The diversity and distribution of the genetic variation in forest phytophagous insect populations can be highly sensitive to forest fragmentation. This should be particularly evident for monophagous insects living on endangered host plants. The aphid Neuquenaphis staryi uses the tree Nothofagus alessandrii, commonly named Ruil, exclusively as a host. Nothofagus alessandrii is an endemic and endangered species whose distribution is highly fragmented in the unique Maulino temperate forests of the coastal range of Central Chile. Here, we provide proof of the specialist status of N. staryi and provide evidence on the genetic diversity and structure of their populations sampled on distinct remnant fragments of the Ruil forest. A sample representing 480 individuals collected from five fragments of Ruil forests revealed 147 distinct multilocus genotypes at six microsatellite loci. Clonal diversity and other genetic parameters were consistent with aphids reproducing by cyclic parthenogenesis and showed few signs of diversity loss. The genetic differentiation among populations was significant as evidenced by the presence of at least three genetic clusters, which are mostly explained by low migration due to geographic barriers that restrict aphid dispersion. Our results suggest that forest fragmentation imposes genetic discontinuities on a highly specialised phytophagous insect, which may have important implications for the conservation status of this ancient aphid‐plant interaction.

Divergence in selection of host species and plant parts among populations of a phytophagous insect

The diversification of phytophagous insects is often attributed to diverging processes of host plant specialization onto different, often closely related, host plants. Some insect clades have diversified by specializing not only on different plant species but also on different plant parts of the same hosts. This is the case in Greya moths (Prodoxidae) where both Greya obscura and G. politella are tightly linked to host plants of the genus Lithophragma (Saxifragaceae). We assess how these species differ in their choice of plants and use of plant parts. Previous work showed that strong local host specialization in G. politella is mediated by floral scent variation among Lithophragma species. Here, we identify geographic variation in host plant use in the close relative G. obscura, relate the emerging patterns to previous studies of geographic variation in host use in G. politella and evaluate potential processes underlying the variation among and within species. First, we show that G. obscura also uses floral chemistry to locate hosts but that additional plant cues must be involved in deciding whether to oviposit on a plant, because females did not discriminate against chemically different host species in no-choice trials. We also found that, although all known populations of G. politella oviposit only in flowers, all G. obscura populations examined here distributed their eggs among both floral and scape tissues both in the field and in laboratory experiments. The distribution of eggs among plant parts, however, varied among moth populations, and also depended on the Lithophragma species they attacked. Together, these results show the potential for phytophagous insect species and populations to diverge in use of plant parts as part of the process of speciation and adaptation. These two layers of specialization enhance the potential for subsequent diversification in phytophagous insect lineages.

Natural enemies act faster than endophytic fungi in population control of cereal aphids

1. Fast-growing populations of phytophagous insects can be limited by the presence of natural enemies and by alkaloids that are produced by symbiotic associations of many temperate grass species with endophytic fungi. It is unclear if and how acquired plant defences derived from endophytic fungi interact with natural enemies to affect phytophagous insect populations. 2. To assess the relative importance of endophytic fungi compared to that of natural enemies on the population dynamics of phytophagous insects, we carried out a fully factorial field experiment, in which the presence of natural enemies and the presence of endophytic fungi were manipulated simultaneously. Target colonies of aphids were monitored for 8 weeks starting from their natural appearance in the field to the end of the aphid season. 3. We show that on Lolium perenne increased natural enemy densities reduced the individual numbers of two common cereal aphids, Rhopalosiphum padi and Metopolophium festucae. 4. The presence of the endophytic fungi Neotyphodium lolii reduced the number of M. festucae but did not affect the number of R. padi. The reduction in R. padi numbers by predators and parasitoids was not influenced by the presence of endophytes. For adult M. festucae, however, the negative effects of natural enemies were significant only in the absence of endophytes. 5. Over the duration of the experiment, the effect of natural enemies on aphid colony growth was much stronger than the effect of the endophytic fungi N. lolii, presumably because predator and parasitoid action on aphid colonies is much faster than any effects of endophytes. 6. Our results demonstrate that with simultaneous action of acquired endosymbionts and natural enemies, both factors can control aphid colony growth but they generally act independently of each other.

GENETIC EVIDENCE FROM MITOCHONDRIAL, NUCLEAR, AND ENDOSYMBIONT MARKERS FOR THE EVOLUTION OF HOST PLANT ASSOCIATED SPECIES IN THE APHID GENUS HYALOPTERUS (HEMIPTERA: APHIDIDAE)

Over the past several decades biologists' fascination with plant-herbivore interactions has generated intensive research into the implications of these interactions for insect diversification. The study of closely related phytophagous insect species or populations from an evolutionary perspective can help illuminate ecological and selective forces that drive these interactions. Here we present such an analysis for aphids in the genus Hyalopterus (Hemiptera: Aphididae), a cosmopolitan group that feeds on plants in the genus Prunus (Rosaceae). Hyalopterus currently contains two recognized species associated with different Prunus species, although the taxonomy and evolutionary history of the group is poorly understood. Using mitochondrial COI sequences, 16S rDNA sequences from the aphid endosymbiont Buchnera aphidicola, and nine microsatellite loci we investigated population structure in Hyalopterus from the most commonly used Prunus host species throughout the Mediterranean as well as in California, where the species H. pruni is an invasive pest. We found three deeply divergent lineages structured in large part by specific associations with plum, almond, and peach trees. There was no evidence that geographic or temporal barriers could explain the overall diversity in the genus. Levels of genetic differentiation are consistent with that typically attributed to aphid species and indicate divergence times older than the domestication of Prunus for agriculture. Interestingly, in addition to their typical hosts, aphids from each of the three lineages were frequently found on apricot trees. Apricot also appears to act as a resource mediated hybrid zone for plum and almond associated lineages. Together, results suggest that host plants have played a role in maintaining host-associated differentiation in Hyalopterus for as long as several million years, despite worldwide movement of host plants and the potential for ongoing hybridization.

Assortative Mating in Sympatric Host Races of the European Corn Borer

Although a growing body of work supports the plausibility of sympatric speciation in animals, the practical difficulties of directly quantifying reproductive isolation between diverging taxa remain an obstacle to analyzing this process. We used a combination of genetic and biogeochemical markers to produce a direct field estimate of assortative mating in phytophagous insect populations. We show that individuals of the same insect species, the European corn borer Ostrinia nubilalis, that develop on different host plants can display almost absolute reproductive isolation-the proportion of assortative mating was >95%-even in the absence of temporal or spatial isolation.

The effects of carabid beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) on the arthropod fauna of wheat fields in Chile

The role of carabid beetles in reducing populations of phytophagous insects has been an elusive subject. A field experiment was established on a commercial wheat crop (cv. Otto) with an area of 4.5 ha in Valdivia, Chile, during the spring and summer of 1996-1997. The field had been under a prairie system for two years, before wheat sowing (fertilization and a pesticide had been applied during crop development). Samples were taken at approximately monthly intervals. Carabid beetles were sampled with a grid of pitfall traps and other insects were sampled with a vacuum insect net and soil cores. The genera of the carabids found are of neotropical origin. Exclusion by polythene barriers, together with removal of carabid beetles using traps, was an effective technique for controlling carabid populations in a commercial wheat crop. A reduction in the number of carabid beetles was associated with an increase in the number of springtails and arachnids, and a decrease of agromyzid adults. Phytophagous insects, such as homopterans and lepidopterous larvae, were not affected by carabid exclusion and removal. The action of carabid beetles on the arthropod fauna can be extremely complex, due to its predatory activity at multitrophic levels.

The effects of plant epicuticular waxy blooms on attachment and effectiveness of predatory insects

Phytophagous insects and their natural enemies frequently must cling to plants in order to forage. Typically, this involves attachment to the layer of lipophilic materials, or ‘epicuticular waxes’ (EW) that covers all primary plant surfaces. EW occurring as crystalline waxy ‘blooms’ can provide a defense against herbivory by interfering with attachment to plants by phytophagous insects. On the other hand, EW blooms can reduce attachment by predators and parasitoids, potentially releasing populations of phytophagous insects from regulation by their natural enemies. The net effect of EW blooms on herbivory should therfore vary from system to system. When it has been measured, EW bloom typically reduces the attachment forces insects can generate on plants. Some herbivores and predators preferentially forage on plants with EW blooms. Among these, some appear to have physiological or behavioral adaptations that either improve attachment to EW blooms or cope with reduced attachment to plants surfaces bearing EW blooms. How EW blooms disrupt insect attachment and how insects potentially overcome this challenge has not been determined. Some hypotheses are offered in this review. Their elucidation may help understand the mechanics of attachment to plants, with applications including helping to improve biological control of some insect pests.

Multilocus models of sympatric speciation: Bush versus Rice versus Felsenstein.

In populations of phytophagous insects that use the host plant as a rendezvous for mating, divergence in host preference could lead to sympatric speciation. Speciation requires the elimination of "generalist" genotypes, that is, those with intermediate host preference. This could occur because such genotypes have an inherent fitness disadvantage, or because preference alleles become associated with alleles that are oppositely selected on the two hosts. Although the former mechanism has been shown to be plausible, the latter mechanism has not been studied in detail. I consider a multilocus model (the "Bush model") in which one set of biallelic loci affects host preference, and a second set affects viability on the hosts once chosen. Alleles that increase viability on one host decrease viability on the other, and all loci are assumed to be unlinked. With moderately strong selection on the viability loci, preference alleles rapidly become associated with viability alleles, and the population splits into two reproductively isolated host specialist populations. The conditions for speciation to occur in this model, as measured by the strength of selection required, are somewhat more stringent than in a model in which preference and viability are controlled by the same loci (one-trait model). In contrast, the conditions are much less stringent than in a model in which speciation requires buildup of associations between viability loci and loci controlling a host-independent assortative mating trait (canonical two-trait model). Moreover, in the one-trait model, and to a lesser extent the Bush model, the strength of selection needed to initiate speciation is only slightly greater than that needed to complete it. This indicates that documenting instances of sympatric species that are reproductively isolated only by host or habitat preference would provide evidence for the plausibility of sympatric speciation in nature.

Interactions between parasitized and unparasitized conspecifics: parasitoids modulate competitive dynamics.

Parasitism influences many aspects of a host's behavior and physiology. Therefore, parasitism is also likely to influence the competitive ability of the host. Field populations of phytophagous insects are often a mix of parasitized and unparasitized conspecifics and the inclusion of parasitism in their competitive dynamics may alter expected outcomes. We investigated the influence of parasitism by the hymenopteran parasitoid Phanerotoma franklini Gahan on the competitive interactions among larvae of its host Acrobasis vaccinii Riley. We found that parasitized larvae were poorer competitors and required less food to complete development compared to unparasitized larvae. To examine the influence of parasitism on the competitive dynamics of this system, we constructed an individual-based model parameterized with our laboratory data. The model examined the role of resource availability and parasitism rate on larval survival. The model suggests that parasitized larvae (and, hence parasitoids) experience higher levels of mortality from competition than unparasitized larvae. Further, the model also suggests that the decreased consumption of resources by parasitized larvae results in a decline in the occurrence of competition as the parasitism rate increases. We suggest that these observations may be general to many parasitoid-host systems.

Seasonal shift from bottom-up to top-down impact in phytophagous insect populations.

Although many studies now examine how multiple factors influence the dynamics of herbivore populations, few studies explicitly attempt to document where and when each is important and how they vary and interact. In fact, how temporal variation in top-down (natural enemies) and bottom-up (host plant resources) factors affect herbivore dynamics has been suggested as a particularly important yet poorly understood feature of terrestrial food webs. In this study we examined how temporal changes in predator density (wolf spiders, sheet-web builders, and mirid egg predators) and host-plant resources (plant quality and structural complexity) influence the population dynamics of the dominant phytophagous insects on Atlantic-coast salt marshes, namely Prokelisia planthoppers (Homoptera: Delphacidae). We designed a factorial experiment in meadows of Spartina alterniflora to mimic natural variation in vegetation quality and structure by establishing two levels of plant nutrition (leaf nitrogen content) by fertilization, and two levels of habitat complexity by adding leaf litter (thatch). We then assessed seasonal changes in the strength of bottom-up (plant quality) and top-down (predator) impacts on planthopper populations. Planthopper populations responded positively to increased plant quality treatments in late summer. Despite the greater number of planthopper adults colonizing fertilized Spartina plots compared to unfertilized controls, the offspring of these colonists were much less abundant at the end of the season in fertilized plots, particularly those with thatch. The initial colonization effect was later erased because arthropod predators selectively accumulated in fertilized plots where they inflicted significant mortality on all stages of planthoppers. Predators rapidly colonized fertilized plots and reached high densities well in advance of planthopper colonization, a response we attribute to their rapid aggregation in complex-structured habitats with readily available alternative prey. Our results suggest that plant resources not only mediate the strength of predator impacts on herbivore populations, but they also promote the coupling of predator and prey populations and thus influence when enemy impacts are realized.

The conditions for speciation to occur in this model, as measured by the strength of selection required, are somewhat more stringent than in a model in which preference and viability are controlled by the same loci (one-trait model). In contrast, the conditions are much less stringent than in a model in which speciation requires buildup of associations between viability loci and loci controlling a host-independent assortative mating trait (canonical two-trait model). Moreover, in the one-trait model, and to a lesser extent the Bush model, the strength of selection needed to initiate speciation is only slightly greater than that needed to complete it. This indicates that documenting instances of sympatric species that are reproductively isolated only by host or habitat preference would provide evidence for the plausibility of sympatric speciation in nature.

Suscetibilidade de Oligonychus yothersi (Acari: Tetranychidae) ao fungo Beauveria bassiana

A cultura da erva-mate (Ilex paraguariensis) é uma importante atividade econômica no Sul do Brasil. Com o aumento de consumo nos anos oitenta, cresceram também as áreas de monocultura, gerando condições favoráveis para o aumento populacional de insetos e ácaros fitófagos, entre eles o ácaro vermelho Oligonychus yothersi. Este estudo avaliou a suscetibilidade do ácaro vermelho O. yothersi a vários isolados do fungo Beauveria bassiana. O experimento foi conduzido em Cascavel, PR. Discos foliares de erva-mate (2,2 cm²) foram previamente infestados com 20 fêmeas adultas. Alíquotas de 1 mL de cada suspensão de conídios dos diferentes isolados de B. bassiana, ajustadas na concentração de 1,0x10(8) conídios mL-1 foram pulverizadas, separadamente, sobre um conjunto de 5 discos. Os discos foliares foram mantidos flutuando em água destilada, em caixas plásticas (3 cm de diâmetro), sob condições controladas. Diariamente, os ácaros mortos foram transferidos para câmara úmida, para confirmação de mortalidade causada pelo fungo. A mortalidade total variou entre 77 e 98% (6 dias após a aplicação), não permitindo diferenciar os isolados quanto à virulência (P>0,05). Já a mortalidade confirmada variou entre 19 e 75%, permitindo diferenciá-los (P<0,05). O ácaro vermelho O. yothersi foi suscetível, em diferentes níveis, aos isolados de B. bassiana testados.
