Exploration of the factors influencing the quality of life among adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic: the data from a cross-sectional study in Shandong

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has sparked unprecedented transformations in the lives of adolescents, with reshaping their routines, social dynamics, educational experiences, and overall well-being. Our study delves into the influence of various factors on adolescents’ quality of life (QOL) among the COVID-19 pandemic in Shandong Province, China.MethodsEmploying a cross-sectional research approach combined with multivariable analysis, we scrutinize the association of demographic factors (age, gender, education level, ethnic groups, urban area, and family economic status) and health-related behaviors (sleep duration, and self-reported health status) with QOL in 9953 students.ResultsDuring the pandemic, the average QOL for adolescents in Shandong Province was 133. Our analysis revealed that sleep duration and age had statistically significant associations with total QOL, with the OR values of 1.43 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03 to 1.83) and 0.44 (95% CI: 0.19 to 0.70), respectively. Notably, we observed that adolescents from economically disadvantaged families, or those with poorer self-reported health status, were more likely to report lower QOL scores.ConclusionsOverall, our study highlights the potential association of sleep duration, age, family economic status, and self-reported health with the QOL of adolescents in Shandong Province during the pandemic. During similar public health crises, policymakers, educators, and healthcare providers can actively work through resource allocation and effective intervention measures towards alleviating financial burdens, improving health conditions, and ultimately enhancing the total QOL for adolescents.

Prevalence and Characteristics of Hidradenitis Suppurativa in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 Study: A Cross-sectional Study of 2,775 Subjects.

A negative stigmatization related to hidradenitis suppurativa may prevent patients from seeking care. Thus, a large proportion of patients with hidradenitis suppurativa may be missing from studies based on hospital data. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and characteristics of hidradenitis suppurativa among 2,775 subjects in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 Study (NFBC1986), who were in their mid-thirties. The prevalence of hidradenitis suppurativa was 4.0% (n = 110/2,775), being higher in females (4.8%) than in males (2.5%) (p < 0.01). Of those defined as having hidradenitis suppurativa in this study, only 4 cases (n = 4/110, 3.6%) were found to have a hidradenitis suppurativa diagnosis either in the hospital (Care Register for Health Care) or in the primary healthcare data. In an adjusted model in logistic regression analyses, hidradenitis suppurativa was significantly associated with obesity (body mass index 30-55 kg/m2) (odds ratio 3.81, 95% confidence interval 2.80-5.22), female sex (1.99, 1.53-2.61) and smoking (1.56, 1.21-2.00). In addition, there was an association between hidradenitis suppurativa and self-reported poor overall health status. Hidradenitis suppurativa seems to be common at the population level and only a minority of these patients seek care for the condition.

Health care-related transportation insecurity is associated with adverse health outcomes among adults with chronic liver disease.

Health care-related transportation insecurity (delayed or forgone medical care due to transportation barriers) is being increasingly recognized as a social risk factor affecting health outcomes. We estimated the national burden and adverse outcomes of health care-related transportation insecurity among US adults with chronic liver disease (CLD). Using the U.S. National Health Interview Survey from 2014 to 2018, we identified adults with self-reported CLD. We used complex weighted survey analysis to obtain national estimates of health care-related transportation insecurity. We examined the associations between health care-related transportation insecurity and health care-related financial insecurity, food insecurity, self-reported health status, work productivity, health care use, and mortality. Of the 3643 (representing 5.2 million) US adults with CLD, 267 [representing 307,628 (6%; 95% CI: 5%-7%)] reported health care-related transportation insecurity. Adults with CLD experiencing health care-related transportation insecurity had 3.5 times higher odds of cost-related medication nonadherence [aOR, 3.5; (2.4-5.0)], 3.5 times higher odds of food insecurity [aOR, 3.5; (2.4-5.3)], 2.5 times higher odds of worsening self-reported health status over the past year [aOR, 2.5; (1.7-3.7)], 3.1 times higher odds of being unable to work due to poor health over the past year [aOR, 3.1; (2.0-4.9)], and 1.7 times higher odds of being in a higher-risk category group for number of hospitalizations annually [aOR, 1.7; (1.2-2.5)]. Health care-related transportation insecurity was independently associated with mortality after controlling for age, income, insurance status, comorbidity burden, financial insecurity, and food insecurity [aHR, 1.7; (1.4-2.0)]. Health care-related transportation insecurity is a critical social risk factor that is associated with health care-related financial insecurity, food insecurity, poorer self-reported health status and work productivity, and increased health care use and mortality among US adults with CLD. Efforts to screen for and reduce health care-related transportation insecurity are warranted.

Social determinants of health of Ukrainian female refugees in the Czech Republic

The main aim of the study was to investigate the social determinants of health in the Ukrainian female refugee sample in the Czech Republic. The results showed that some determinants of health like financial difficulties and socioeconomic status decline during forced migration, inaccessibility of healthcare services, health deterioration, the presence of chronic diseases, limitation in daily activity due to ill health, experienced discrimination in host country, lack of a person to share personal feelings and issues were significantly associated with poor self-reported physical health status.

Depressive symptoms mediate associations of adverse childhood experiences and chronic lung diseases: A mediation effect analysis

BackgroundAdverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been found to be related to the risk of chronic lung diseases (CLDs). However, the role of depressive symptoms (DS) in this link has not been fully examined. The present study aimed to explore the mediating effect of DS on the relationship between ACEs and CLDs. MethodsData for this retrospective cohort study were obtained from participants enrolled in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). To assess DS, the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Research Depression Scale was utilized. Logistic regression was employed to explore the associations between ACEs and DS, ACEs and CLDs, as well as depressive symptoms- chronic lung diseases (DS-CLDs). Mediation analysis was conducted to assess the mediating role of DS in the relationship between ACEs and CLDs. ResultsA total of 12,277 participants, comprising 5942 males and 6335 females, were included in this study. Logistic regression analysis identified associations between ACEs and the risk of DS, CLDs, and DS-CLDs. Mediating effect analysis demonstrated that DS had partial mediating effects on the association between CLDs and 7 ACEs, including feel alone, peer bullied, self-reported poor health status, health limitations, death of siblings, physical abuse, and parental mental health. Additionally, DS fully mediated the relationship between CLDs and hunger. ConclusionsOur study establishes a significant association between ACEs and CLDs, as well as with DS and DS-CLDs in the elderly population. Furthermore, DS acts as a mediating factor in the ACEs and CLDs relationship.

Incidence of Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease, Genetic Susceptibility, and Grip Strength Among Older Adults.

Grip strength has prognostic value for aging-related health outcomes. Whether the associations of grip strength with the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD) vary by the genetic risk of AD and related dementias (ADD) is unknown. This study included 148 659 older adults of white British ancestry (aged ≥60 years) participating in UK Biobank with no dementia, and self-reported poor health status at baseline. Polygenic risk scores (PRS) for ADD were calculated based on 64 genetic variants. Grip strength was measured by hand dynamometers. The hazard ratios (HR) of dementia (n = 4 963) and AD (n = 2 373) for high genetic risk of ADD were 2.36 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.15-2.59) and 3.00 (95% CI: 2.61-3.44), respectively, compared with low genetic risk. Compared with the bottom tertile of grip strength, the top tertile of grip strength had a hazard ratio (HR) of 0.69 (95% CI: 0.64-0.74) for incident dementia, and 0.74 (95% CI: 0.66-0.82) for incident AD, after adjustment for confounders and PRS for ADD. The risk of dementia and AD was lower with the top grip strength tertile within each level of genetic susceptibility to ADD. There was no evidence of multiplicative interaction between grip strength and genetic susceptibility to ADD for both dementia (p value: .241) and AD (p value: .314). Older adults with higher PRS for ADD are at higher risk of developing dementia and AD. The risk of dementia and AD was lower in individuals with higher grip strength, regardless of their level of genetic susceptibility to ADD.

Perceived Life Expectancy Among Dialysis Recipients: A Scoping Review

Greater prognostic understanding is associated with higher quality care at the end of life. We undertook a scoping review to explore how long dialysis recipients expect to live. Scoping Review. People with kidney failure over 18 years old. Studies were identified by searching Medline, Embase, APA PsycINFO, HMIC, and ProQuest database for terms related to "life expectancy", "self-estimated", and "end stage kidney disease". Search strategies reported 349 unique, potentially eligible studies, with 8 studies meeting the inclusion criteria after screening. Significant mismatches between dialysis recipients and their health care provider's estimations of prognosis were reported, with patients predicting significantly higher life expectancies than health care professionals and almost no agreement between patient and nephrologist's estimates of 1-year survival. Documented cognitive impairment did not affect 1-year or 5-year prognosis estimates, nor did gender, age, time on dialysis, or discussing perceived life expectancy. Dialysis recipients who thought they were on the transplant list or who self-identified as African American reported higher perceived life expectancy, whereas people who were 75 years or older, or with fair or poor self-reported health status reported a lower perceived life expectancy. Those with a lower perceived life expectancy preferred care focusing on relieving pain and discomfort, whereas people who thought they had a higher chance of survival were significantly more likely to prefer life-extending care. There is a marked paucity of research in this area, with most studies conducted in North American cohorts. Optimistic patient prognostic expectations persist in dialysis recipients. Given the effects of perceived life expectancy on treatment choices and subsequent quality of life, it is important that transparent discussions regarding prognosis are conducted with people receiving dialysis and their families. Understanding illness severity and prognosis allows people to make decisions and prioritize areas of their lives that are important to them. We undertook a scoping review to explore how long dialysis recipients expect to live. We found significant mismatches between the perceived life expectancy of people treated with dialysis and their health care providers. Perceived life expectancy influenced treatment choices; thus, those who thought they would die sooner prioritized care focusing on relieving pain and discomfort. Those who thought they had a higher chance of survival were more likely to prefer life-extending care (with potential effects on quality of life). It is important to have frank discussions about prognosis with people receiving dialysis, to empower individuals and help them make informed decisions about their care.

Low life satisfaction status among older people with and without an intimate partner: a nationwide cross-sectional study in China.

Focusing on older people with and without an intimate partner, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of low life satisfaction in both groups, as well as the potential risk factors. The 2017-2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) data were used, and 9960 individuals aged 60 years and above were included in the analyses. Factors evaluated in this survey included sociodemographic characteristics, clinical variables, physical and social activities, and economic and social factors. The associations of low life satisfaction with independent variables were analysed using multivariate logistic regression. Compared with those with an intimate partner (n = 2025), elders without an intimate partner (n = 7935) showed a higher prevalence of low life satisfaction (15.1 vs. 9.9%, P < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression showed that ≥2 physical diseases (P = 0.024), poor self-reported health status (P = 0.012), and lack of community care service (P = 0.014) were risk factors for low life satisfaction among elders without an intimate partner, while poor self-reported health status (P < 0.001), ≥2 physical diseases (P = 0.001), being troubled with bodily pain (P < 0.001), lack of light physical activity >10 mins each time (P = 0.011), lack of moderate physical activity >10 mins each time (P = 0.001), lack of social activities in the previous month (P = 0.039), and lack of community care service (P < 0.001) were risk factors for elders with an intimate partner. Regarding the potential reasons for low life satisfaction in the elderly, dissatisfaction with current health status (28.0%) and air quality (15.6%) were most prevalent. Older people without an intimate partner have lower life satisfaction. Having ≥2 physical diseases, poor self-reported health status, and lack of community care service were common risk factors for low life satisfaction among older adults with or without an intimate partner.

The Relationship of Food Insecurity to Nutritional Risk in Independent Living Older Adults

Understanding the factors that augment optimal health during aging is critical as the US older adult population is increasing. Most research about food insecurity, nutritional risk, and perceived health among older adults are in urban areas or congregate living facilities. Thus, the purpose of this project was to study the relationships among these factors, plus activities of daily living, in community-dwelling older adults in a medium-sized city. Using a qualitative-quantitative study design, a cross-sectional survey was completed by 167 low-income senior apartment residents. Food insecurity in this group was higher than the national and state rate, yet nutrition assistance programs were underutilized and participants under 75 years were more food insecure than their older counterparts. Food insecure residents were at greater nutritional risk, had poorer self-reported health status, were more likely to be depressed, and had a less independent function, including limitations on the ability to shop for and prepare food. The study area is desirable to retirees due to lower cost of living; however, access to services, such as grocery stores, public transportation, and health care providers is limited. This research indicates the need for increased outreach, nutrition assistance, and support services to ensure healthy aging in these regions.

Determinants of self-reported health status during COVID-19 lockdown among surveyed Ecuadorian population: A cross sectional study.

To examine the associations of sociodemographic, socioeconomic, and behavioral factors with depression, anxiety, and self-reported health status during the COVID-19 lockdown in Ecuador. We also assessed the differences in these associations between women and men. We conducted a cross-sectional survey between July to October 2020 to adults who were living in Ecuador between March to October 2020. All data were collected through an online survey. We ran descriptive and bivariate analyses and fitted sex-stratified multivariate logistic regression models to assess the association between explanatory variables and self-reported health status. 1801 women and 1123 men completed the survey. Their median (IQR) age was 34 (27-44) years, most participants had a university education (84%) and a full-time public or private job (63%); 16% of participants had poor health self-perception. Poor self-perceived health was associated with being female, having solely public healthcare system access, perceiving housing conditions as inadequate, living with cohabitants requiring care, perceiving difficulties in coping with work or managing household chores, COVID-19 infection, chronic disease, and depression symptoms were significantly and independently associated with poor self-reported health status. For women, self-employment, having solely public healthcare system access, perceiving housing conditions as inadequate, having cohabitants requiring care, having very high difficulties to cope with household chores, having COVID-19, and having a chronic disease increased the likelihood of having poor self-reported health status. For men, poor or inadequate housing, presence of any chronic disease, and depression increased the likelihood of having poor self-reported health status. Being female, having solely public healthcare system access, perceiving housing conditions as inadequate, living with cohabitants requiring care, perceiving difficulties in coping with work or managing household chores, COVID-19 infection, chronic disease, and depression symptoms were significantly and independently associated with poor self-reported health status in Ecuadorian population.

Evaluation of status quo and determinants of catastrophic health expenditure among empty-nest elderly in China: evidence from the China health and retirement longitudinal survey (CHARLS).

The aging society and the empty nest of the elderly have become issues that cannot be ignored by the Chinese government. Not only does the physical function of the empty-nest elderly (ENE) decline, and the incidence and prevalence of chronic diseases increase significantly, but they are also more likely to have loneliness, low life satisfaction, mental health problems, and even a much greater possibility of suffering from depression than the nonempty-nest elderly, besides the possibility of catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) which is also greatly increased. This paper aims to evaluate the status quo of dilemma and determinants of a vast sample of subjects based on the national level. Data were obtained from the latest 2018's data of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Under the guidance of Andersen's model of health services utilization, this study clarified the overall and different demographic characteristics and prevalence of CHE among ENE and further built the Logit and Tobit model to explore the determinants of CHE occurrence and its intensity. A total of 7,602 ENE were included in the analysis, and the overall incidence of CHE among them was 21.20%. Poor self-reported health status (OR=2.03, 95% CI: 1.71-2.35), suffering from three or more chronic diseases simultaneously (OR=1.79, 95% CI: 1.42-2.15), low life satisfaction (OR=1.44, 95% CI: 1.20-1.68) and advanced age played the leading role in accounting for its high risk, and its intensity increased 0.0311 (SE=0.005), 0.0234 (SE=0.007), and 0.0178 (SE=0.005), respectively. In contrast, the leading drop in the probability of CHE among ENE was those whose monthly income was over 20,000 CNY (OR=0.46, 95% CI: 0.38-0.55), whose intensity declined 0.0399 (SE=0.005), whose monthly income was between 2,000 and 20,000 CNY (OR=0.78, 95% CI: 0.66-0.90) and whose intensity declined 0.021 (SE=0.005), and who were married during the survey period (OR=0.82, 95% CI: 0.70-0.94). Simultaneously, rural ENE showed more vulnerability and higher risk of CHE when confronted with these factors compared with the urban ones. More attention should be paid for ENE in China. The priority, including the relevant health insurance or social security measurements, should be further strengthened.

Food Insecurity and COVID-19 Infection: Findings From the 2020−2021 National Health Interview Survey

The purpose of this study was to examine socio-demographic and health-related factors associated with food insecurity and the association between food insecurity and COVID-19 infection using a nationally representative sample in the U.S. Cross-sectional data of 61,050 adults (≥18 years) from the 2020 and 2021 National Health Interview Survey were analyzed. Food insecurity was measured by the 10-item U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Security Survey Module. Weighted multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate associations with food insecurity. 6.8% of the NHIS participants lived in food-insecure households, and 18.9% tested positive for COVID-19 infection. Young (18-34 years) or middle age (35-64 years), female sex, minor race/ethnicity (Hispanic/non-Hispanic Black/non-Hispanic Asian/others), education level less than high school, unmarried status, unemployment, poverty (below the federal poverty level), having no health insurance, a larger number of adults and children in the household, poorer self-reported health status, and presence of chronic conditions were significantly associated with food insecurity (AOR ranged from 1.20 to 3.15, all p<0.0001). Food insecurity was independently associated with positive COVID-19 infection (AOR=1.25, 95% CI: 1.11, 1.40) controlling for socio-demographic and health-related factors. The greatest magnitude of the association was observed for the non-Hispanic Blacks (AOR=1.47, 95% CI: 1.15, 1.88), females (AOR=1.44, 95% CI: 1.20, 1.71), and those below the federal poverty level (AOR=1.39, 95% CI: 1.12, 1.73) across all the subgroups. Food insecurity disproportionately affected vulnerable subgroups such as young adults, females, minor race/ethnicity groups, and those with lower socioeconomic backgrounds and was associated with positive COVID-19 infection. Policies addressing food insecurity may help reduce the likelihood of COVID-19 infection, especially for those vulnerable subgroups.

Patients' Trust in Health Care Providers Among Hospitalized Patients, Jimma, South West Ethiopia.

Trust is a fundamental aspect of the patient-health care provider (HCP) relationship associated with adherence to medical treatment and continuity of follow-up. Despite its importance there is a paucity of information in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess patient trust in HCPs at the Jimma medical center (JMC), Ethiopia. An institution based cross-sectional study was conducted among 404 participants from April 16 to June 29, 2020. Study participants were selected using a systematic sampling technique. Data were collected on socio-demographic characteristics, health related and clinical characteristics, and patient trust in the patient-HCP. The collected data were entered into Epi-Data version 3.1 then exported to SPSS version 23.0 for analysis. Variables with a p-value <.25 on bivariate analysis were considered as candidates for multivariate analyses. Statistical significance on multivariable analysis was declared with p-value < .05 and 95% confidence intervals (CI). In our study, 38% of patients had low trust. Among the 397 study participants, 46.6% were female. One-third (33.2%) of respondents had no formal education. Patients who live alone [(AOR) 4.30(1.98-9.33), p = .00], and self-reported as a poor current health status [(AOR) 2.32(1.39-3.88), p = .002] were positively associated to patient trust in patient-HCP. On the other hand, duration of disease more than one year after diagnosis [(AOR) 0.48 (0.25-0.92), p = .028], comorbid disease [(AOR) 0.39(0.22-0.67), p = .001], and impaired physical mobility [(AOR) 0.27(0.16-0.45), p = .001] were negatively associated with patient trust in HCP. This study pinpoints that 38 out of 100 patients had low trust. Living alone and having poor self-reported current health status increased low trust. This calls for HCPs to rebuild trust and give due attention to patients living alone and with poor health status.

Morbidity Patterns and Associated Factors among Elderly People: The Case of Sunkoshi Rural Municipality, Nepal

The rapidly increasing elderly population in Nepal is the most significant emerging demographic phenomenon. Multimorbidity is common among the elderly and its prevalence increases with age. This study aims to assess the chronic conditions and the demographic and socioeconomic factors that influence morbidity among the elderly. A cross-sectional study was carried out in the Sunkoshi rural municipality of Sindhuli district from December 2021 to January 2022 with 413 elderly people aged 60 and older using a structured questionnaire. Multinomial logistic regression was used for data analysis. About 27% of the elderly suffer from gastritis, followed by high blood pressure (27%), arthritis (24%), asthma (18%), and diabetes (10%). Seventy-seven percent of the elderly reported at least one morbidity and 41% have two or more morbidities. More than one-fifth of elderly people have no morbidity. In the multinominal logistic regression, moderate (RRR=3.31, 95% CI: 1.15-4.63) and poor (RRR=11.91, 95% CI: 1.00-141.83) self-reported health status was significantly associated with one morbidity. A joint family (RRR=2.01, 95% CI: 1.08-3.74), moderate (RRR=3.07, 95% CI: 1.52-6.21) or poor (RRR=32.05, 95% CI: 2.53-405.94) self-reported health status was significantly associated with two or more morbidity. Those aged 80 years or over, those who belonged to the hill Janajati, and those who consumed alcohol were less likely to have multimorbidity. Concerned authorities should consider expanding health services in order to improve the health status of the elderly.

Association between poor self-reported health and unmarried status among adults: examining the hypothesis of marriage protection and marriage selection in the Indian context

BackgroundThe link between marital status and health differences has long been a topic of debate. The substantial research on marriage and health has been conducted under two important hypotheses: marital protection and marriage selection. While the majority of evidence on the marriage-health relationship using these hypotheses comes from developed countries, there is a lack of evidence from Asia, particularly from India.ObjectivesThe current study examines theoretical frameworks of marriage i.e., marital protection and marriage selection in the Indian setting concurrently, bringing substantial empirical evidence to explore the link between marriage and health, considering this subject in the context of self-reported health (SRH). Secondly, this study will aid in investigating age and gender differences in marriage and health.MethodsUsing the Study on Global AGEing and Adult Health (SAGE), a cohort study of individuals aged 50 years and older with a small section of individuals aged 18 to 49 for comparative reasons, the present study population was 25 years and above individuals with complete marital information. Logistic regressions were employed to explore the connection between marital status and self-reported health. In the marriage protection hypothesis, the follow-up poor SRH was the dependent variable, whereas the initial unmarried status was the independent variable. For the marriage selection effects, initial poor SRH as the independent variable and follow-up unmarried status as the dependent variable had considered.ResultsExamining the marital protection hypothesis, the initial unmarried status (OR: 2.14; CI at 95%: 1.17, 3.92) was associated with the followed-up SRH transition from good to poor between 2007 and 2015 for young men, while initial unmarried status was linked with a lower likelihood of stable good SRH and a higher likelihood of stable poor SRH status across all age categories among women. Focusing on the marriage selection hypothesis, among young men, a significant association exists between the initial poor SRH and departure in marital status from married to unmarried. Young women with initial poor SRH (OR: 0.68; CI at 95%: 0.40, 1.00) had lower odds of stable married. In comparison, women with initially poor SRH, irrespective of age, were more likely to have higher odds of being stably unmarried.ConclusionMarriage indeed protects health. There are also shreds of evidence on health-selected marital status in India. Taken together, the aspect of marital protection or marriage selection is gender and age-specific in India. The findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between marriage and health, which may have significant implications for health-related public policies aimed at unmarried women.

Les niveaux d’impact psychologique, d’anxiété, de dépression et de stress de la population générale du Sénégal pendant la pandémie de COVID-19

ObjectivesAssessing of Impact of Event, depression, anxiety and stress levels in the Senegalese general population during the COVID19 pandemic and identifying associated factors. MethodsSocio-demographic data, psychological impact of the pandemic, and mental health status of participants were collected using an online questionnaire administered to the general population of Senegal between April 1st and April 30th 2021. Psychological impact and mental health status were assessed, respectively, by the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale 21 (DASS21). The data were analyzed by Jamovi software, version 1.6.23. Logistic regression in univariate and multivariate analyses were used to determine statistically significant associations with a significance level of P<0.05. ResultsWe enrolled 447 respondents with 19% reporting a moderate to severe psychological impact of the outbreak. Respectively 13.4%, 5.1% and 15.2% had moderate to extremely severe symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. Statistically significant associations with higher odds of severe levels of psychological impact of the event, depression, anxiety, and stress were represented by five characteristics: Living in Dakar, no formal education, a personal medical chronic disease, a close family member with a chronic medical disease and poor to very poor self-reported health status. ConclusionThis study determined the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and stress in the Senegalese general population during the COVID19 pandemic. Our study assessed the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and stress in the general population of Senegal during the COVID pandemic19. It confirms that the pandemic has truly an impact on the mental health of the Senegalese population. This impact is strongly influenced by geographic area and level of education.

Impact of exercise on physical health status in bladder cancer patients.

There is a scarcity of data on the impact of behavioral habits, such as exercise, on physical health in patients with bladder cancer. We investigated the association of exercise on self-reported physical health status and examined the prevalence of bladder cancer patients with sedentary lifestyle. We examined cross-sectional data of participants diagnosed with bladder cancer within the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) from 2016-2020. Patient health status was surveyed using self-reported measures, such as the total days per month when their "physical health is not good." The primary outcome was patient-reported poor physical health for more than 14 days within a one-month period. Out of 2 193 981 survey participants, we identified 936 with a history of bladder cancer. Nearly one in three bladder cancer patients reported being sedentary within the last month, as a total of 307 (32.8%) patients reported no exercise within the last 30 days. The remaining 628 (67.2%) reported exercising for at least one day within the last month. In multivariable logistic regression model analysis, we found that exercise is protective for self-reported poor physical health status (odds ratio 0.37, 95% confidence interval 0.25-0.56, p<0.001). Patients that exercised were less likely to report bad physical health. Approximately one in three bladder cancer patients report no exercise within 30 days, suggesting a sedentary lifestyle. Patients that are active are less likely to self-report poor physical health status. Implementation of exercise programs for bladder cancer patients could be promising in improving health status.

Cannabidiol use and perceptions in France: a national survey

BackgroundCannabidiol (CBD), a safe, non-intoxicating cannabis component, is growing in popularity in Europe and worldwide. However, CBD EU regulation is blurry, and consequent labelling and product quality issues may have implications for public health. There is therefore a need to assess the prevalence and perceived harmfulness of CBD use in EU countries, as well as to characterise CBD users. We aimed to do so in the French population.MethodsIn December 2021, an online survey was conducted in a sample respecting the French adult population structure for key demographic variables. Sociodemographic, behavioural and CBD perception data were collected. Three separate regressions were performed to identify correlates of i) having heard of CBD, ii) using CBD, iii) perceived harmfulness of CBD. A hierarchical classification was also performed to identify profiles of CBD users.ResultsThe study sample comprised 1969 adults, of whom 69.2% had heard of CBD and 10.1% used it. Less than half (46.8%) of the former considered it harmful. Having heard of CBD was associated with younger age, being born in France, tobacco use, and cannabis use. CBD use was associated with younger age, tobacco use, cannabis use, poor self-reported general health status, and positive perception of alternative medicines. Cluster analysis revealed four different CBD user profiles based on socio-demographics and behavioural characteristics.ConclusionTen percent of the adults in this French study used CBD, and several user profiles emerged. Our results indirectly advocate clearer European CBD regulations to ensure safe and high-quality products.

Prevalence and associated factors with traditional, complementary and integrative medicine in Brazil: A population-based study

The prevalence and use of Traditional Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) varies according to sociodemographic factors and health condition. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of TCIM use and its association with self-perceived health status, depression and sociodemographic factors. We used data from the Brazilian National Survey (PNS 2019), a population-based study, with complex and probabilistic sampling method. There were 94,114 participants with complete information about the use of TCIM. All participants answered a questionnaire containing sociodemographic, clinical data and information about their TCIM use during the last 12 months. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was used to assess depression. All variables were categorized. Logistic regression models were performed to obtain crude and adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). The prevalence of any type of TCIM use was 5.3% (95%CI: 5.0% - 5.6%). Among TCIM users, medicinal plants and phytotherapy (57.2%), acupuncture (26.3%), and homeopathy (17.0%) were the most frequently used. In the adjusted analysis, the variables associated with higher prevalence of TCIM use were: female gender, being older than 29 years old, being White, higher socioeconomic and educational status, living in a rural area and in the Northern region of the country. Poorer self-reported health status and depression were also associated with TCIM use. In Brazil, despite the expansion of TCIM in the public health system over the last few years did not reflect a higher use in the general population.

Temporal trend and contributing factors of depressive symptoms in Chinese menopausal women: analysis based on CHARLS panel data

To understand the temporal trend of and the factors affecting depressive symptoms in Chinese menopausal women to provide evidence for the development of prevention and treatment strategies. CHARLS data were used to select menopausal women aged 45-60 years. Complete values of the key variables were screened and missing values were removed to obtain the cross-sectional data of the years 2011 (n=4318), 2013 (n=4200), 2015 (n=3930), and 2018 (n= 4147). The panel data were matched by the cross-sectional data, and a total of 5040 cases with complete record of the follow-up data were obtained for the 4 years to constitute a balanced short panel dataset with n=1260 and T=4. The prevalence and temporal trend of depressive symptoms in the menopausal women were analyzed based on the panel data. The random-effects Logit model with a panel dichotomous choice model was used to explore the factors affecting depressive symptoms in the menopausal women. The prevalence of depressive symptoms in the menopausal women calculated based on the panel data was 35.9%, 33.1%, 36.7% and 43.7% in the 4 years, respectively, showing no statistically significant changes in the temporal trend (APC=3.25%, P=0.183). The results of the random-effects Logit model analysis showed that living in the urban area (OR=0.570, 95%CI: 0.457-0.710), a high education level (OR=0.759, 95%CI: 0.655-0.879), and having a spouse (OR=0.363, 95% CI: 0.236-0.558) were associated with a decreased incidence of depressive symptoms, while poor self-reported health (OR= 2.704, 95% CI: 2.152-3.396), disability (OR=1.457, 95%CI: 1.087-1.954), chronic disease (OR=1.407, 95% CI: 1.179-1.680), falls in the last two years (OR=2.028, 95% CI: 1.613-2.550), abnormal sleep duration (OR=2.249, 95% CI: 1.896-2.664), and dissatisfaction with life (OR=4.803, 95% CI: 3.757-6.140) were associated with an increased incidence of depressive symptoms. The prevalence of depressive symptoms is relatively high in menopausal women in China. Measures should be taken to ensure that the menopausal women living in rural areas, with low education level, without spouse, with a poor self-reported health status, disability, chronic diseases, falls in recent two years, abnormal sleep time and dissatisfaction with life have access to psychological health care services and interventions.
