Safety and efficacy of a feed additive consisting of ponceau 4R for its use in baits for freshwater fish (GIFAP)

Abstract Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of ponceau 4R as sensory additives (functional group: (a) colourants: (i) substances that add or restore colour in feedingstuffs). The additive is already authorised for use with cats and dogs and ornamental fish. The additive is intended to be incorporated in freshwater fishing baits up to a maximum of 15 mg/kg in complementary feed in order to colour them. The additive is intended to be incorporated into feed directly in solid form or via an aqueous solution. The additive is not intended for use in aquaculture. The FEEDAP Panel concluded that ponceau 4R is considered safe when used in fish baits for freshwater fish at the maximum proposed dose of 15 mg/kg complementary feed. The use of the feed additive ponceau 4R fish baits for freshwater fish under the conditions of use proposed is of no concern for consumer safety. Ponceau 4R is not skin irritant but should be considered a skin and respiratory sensitiser. Inhalation and dermal exposure are considered a risk. The FEEDAP Panel could not conclude on the eye irritation potential of the additive. In absence of data no conclusion can be reached on the efficacy of ponceau 4R in freshwater fish baits.

Analyzing the presence of ten synthetic colors in selected food and drink samples using ultra high-performance liquid chromatography diode array detection analysis

AbstractColoring agents in foods and drinks have been popular for centuries. This study aims to analyze the presence of ten synthetic colors (namely, (allura red (E129), amaranth (E123), sunset yellow (E110), tetrazine (E102), fast green (E143), ponceau 4R (New Coccine) (E124), erythrosin B (E127), brilliant blue FCF (E133), brilliant black (E151) and carmoisine (E122))) in food and drink samples using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography diode array detection (UHPLC-DAD). The present analytical method was carried out using Agilent Poroshell 120 HPH-C18 column, 3 × 100 mm, 2.7 µm, and a mobile phase consisting of 10 mM Na2HPO4, pH 7, mixed with methanol as a time-increment gradient solution until the time was 20 min, then decreased with time until the time was 26 min. The pH was set by orthophosphoric acid at 7 and 5 μL injection volume, 0.50 mL flow rate, and the elution systems were monitored at 428 nm for E102, 518 nm for E124, E110, E129, E122, 530 nm for E151, E127, 622 nm for E143, and E133, respectively. The limit of detection and quantification for all colors ranged from 0.017 to 0.025 and 0.057 and 0.082 mg L−1, respectively. The correlation coefficient values ranged between 0.9991 and 1.0. The selectivity of the assay revealed no interference from other components in the analyzed samples. The percent recovery and precision (intra- and inter-day) of the spiked samples were within the acceptable limits of the ICH guidelines. Five analytical parameters were employed, and the results showed a new, novel, and robust method according to ICH guidelines for analyzing these colors. While most of the investigated food and drinks fell within the accepted range, some fell outside. The current sample preparation and analytical methods are comprehensive and universal for extracting and measuring synthetic colors in various food and drink samples.

Food dye adsorption in single and ternary systems by the novel passion fruit peel biochar adsorbent

This study evaluated the passion fruit peel biochar (PFPB) as a novel adsorbent for synthetic food dyes indigotine blue (IB), tartrazine yellow (TY), and ponceau 4R (P4R) removal in single and ternary systems. A macroporous structure and a predominance of basic groups characterized PFPB. The pH study revealed better adsorption at pH 2.0. The response surface methodology optimization for adsorbent dosage and temperature predicted removal efficiencies of 100 % for IB, 79.8 % for TY, and 84.4 % for P4R. Elovich and Redlich-Peterson models better described kinetic and equilibrium, respectively, suggesting the contribution of chemical interactions. Thermodynamic data revealed endothermic, with an inordinate degree and spontaneous adsorption. In the ternary systems, antagonistic effects of interaction were noticed. The adsorption of synthetic effluents showed promising results with removal efficiencies of 99.6 % (IB), 60.2 % (TY), and 51.8 % (P4R). Therefore, we concluded that PFPB is a potential alternative low-cost synthetic food dye removal adsorbent.

Ponceau 4R elimination from fruit juice: An integrated optimization strategy utilizing artificial neural networks, least squares, and chitosan-nickel ferrite Nano Sorbent

The goal of present work is to examine the efficiency of aminated-chitosan/NiFe2O4 nanoparticles (AmCs/NiFe2O4 NPs) produced for removing Ponceau 4R (P4R) from fruit juice through an adsorption process. The resulting nanoparticles were characterized using various techniques. The modeling of results was done using least squares (LS) and Radial basis function-artificial neural network (RBF-ANN). The optimum removal of P4R (91.43 %) was obtained at the following optimum conditions: pH 4.47, adsorbent dosage 0.047 g/L, contact time approximately 57.78 min, and initial concentration P4R 26.89 mg/L. The highest adsorption capacity (qm) was found to be 208.33 mg g−1. The P4R adsorption mostly followed the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order isotherm kinetic models. Both LS-based models and RBF-ANN provided good predictions for independent variables. The dye elimination efficacy for juice samples were approximately 90.34 %. Therefore, based on the obtained results, it can be claimed that the prepared AmCs/NiFe2O4 NPs can be used to remove P4R.

Remodeling of the structural components of the capsule and glomerular zone of the adrenal glands cortex of white rats under the influence of a complex of food additives at the late terms of the experimental study

With food additives, we can add flavour to food, extend its shelf life, and make it look good. However, even small amounts of these additives can lead to diseases of various organs and systems. The aim of our work is to establish metrics and morphological changes in the structure of the capsule and the glomerular zone of the cortex of the adrenal glands of rats at the later stages of the experimental study under the conditions of consumption of a complex of food additives: monosodium glutamate, sodium nitrite and Ponceau 4R. The control group of rats consumed oral drinking water and saline. The rats of the experimental groups were orally administered once a day with a 10 % solution of sodium nitrite (E250), sodium glutamate (E621) or Ponceau 4R. The dosages of food additives were two times lower than the permissible norm in food. The rats were withdrawn from the experiment after 8, 12 and 16 weeks. The adrenal glands were removed for the study. Paraffin sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and semi-thin sections with toluidine blue, and examined using a light microscope Biorex with a digital microphoto attachment DSM 900. Ultrathin sections were examined in a TEM-125 K electron microscope. For morphometric analysis, the structure of the capsule and the glomerular zone of the cortex of the adrenal glands of rats at the later stages of the experimental study was studied. The study results were analysed using the software package “InStat”. At the late stages of the experimental study, the adrenal capsule underwent irreversible changes. The average thickness of the adrenal connective tissue capsule decreased by the end of the 16th week of the experimental research. Similarly, the average thickness of the cortex decreased with each subsequent week relative to the control values, indicating significant structural and functional disorders. The average thickness of the glomerular zone of the adrenal cortex periodically changed as a compensatory reaction in response to the administration of a complex of food additives to rats. The phenomena of nucleus pyknosis and sludge syndrome were detected, which indicated compensatory and adaptive processes at the microscopic level. The analysis of electron micrographs revealed destroyed granular endoplasmic reticulum cisternae and mitochondrial remnants. Thus, it has been established that using a complex of food additives (monosodium glutamate, sodium nitrite and Ponceau 4R) directly affects the adrenal glands of rats. This effect causes structural changes in the cortex and medulla, causing alteration and hypertrophy of cells in these areas. Additionally, hyperhydration of the connective tissue stroma and compensatory-restorative reactions aimed at transcription factors and internal mechanisms of nitric oxide formation were recorded.

Formation of CdTe core and CdTe@ZnTe core-shell quantum dots via hydrothermal approach using dual capping agents: deciphering the food dye sensing and protein binding applications.

Excessive use of food coloring agents in the food industry to make the food more attractive or improve the taste has caused various health and ecological problems. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a reliable, sensitive, and selective sensing probe to detect food dyes in different food products for future industrial processing and biosafety. In recent decades, surface-functionalized quantum dots (QDs), owing to their unique optical properties, have gained tremendous interest for a wide range of applications, including biomedical, bioimaging and sensing applications. Herein, we have reported the synthesis of excellent colloidal stable and highly luminescent CdTe core and CdTe@ZnTe core-shell QDs using dual functionalizing agents, polyvinyl pyrrolidone and vitamin C. The synthesized QDs were explored as excellent sensing probes for the food dyes carmoisine, Ponceau 4R and tartrazine with limit of detection (LOD) values of 0.097 ± 0.006, 0.147 ± 0.001 and 0.044 ± 0.001 μM for CdTe-PVP QDs and 0.079 ± 0.001, 0.114 ± 0.002 and 0.042 ± 0.001 μM for CdTe@ZnTe-PVP QDs, respectively. The sensitivity of the synthesized QDs for the food dyes was also investigated in real samples (soft drinks and medications). Moreover, considering the potential effects of QDs as therapeutics or nano-drug carriers, the interactions between the synthesized QDs and carrier protein human serum albumin (HSA) were investigated. The binding affinity was observed to be in the order of 104 M-1. QDs were found to quench the intrinsic fluorescence of HSA, and both types of quenching (static and dynamic) occur via electrostatic interactions in association with hydrophobic forces without any significant alteration in the protein structure.

Photodegradation and kinetics studies of food dyes by advanced oxidative processes

In this research, the advanced oxidative processe (AOP), Photo-Fenton was applied and kinetics studies were realized by the photodegradation of bright blue FCF, ponceau 4R red and tartrazine yellow food dyes. The AOP Photo-Fenton (combining iron/hydrogen peroxide (H2O2, 36% v/v) /ultraviolet (UV) light, processes were studied. The reaction time, concentration and time of exposure to UV light were evaluated for the food dyes described with both AOP. The results exhibited good effectiveness by Photo-Fenton in the photodegradation of bright blue FCF, ponceau 4R red and tartrazine yellow food dyes. The Photo-Fenton (Fe/H2O2/UV light) exposed high photodegradation in shorter reaction time for all food dyes studied. The kinetics studies performed from the photodegradation food dyes data, showed exponential behavior of the concentration as a function of time, given the first-order exponential with good correlation coefficient, R2 = 0,99 for bright blue FCF, ponceau 4R red and tartrazine yellow food dyes. Thus, we can highlight that the Photo-Fenton stand out as an important methodology for treating industrial effluents containing food dyes, combining the advantages of ease, effectiveness and low cost in the process.

Quasi-hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents for simultaneous automated determination of polar and non-polar dyes in food products

In this work, quasi-hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents were used for the first time for the efficient extraction of both polar (Sunset Yellow FCF (E 110), Azorubine (E122), Ponceau 4R (E124)) and non-polar (Sudan I, Sudan II, Sudan III) dyes from food products at the same time. These solvents were made from polar and nonpolar components, which made it possible to extract analytes of various natures. To automate the technique, a flow analysis method was used, which increases the speed and reliability of determining analytes in food samples. For a detailed study of extraction mechanisms, various process modeling methods were used. The proposed DES-based method addresses the limitations of traditional extraction methods, offering a more robust and efficient solution for food analysis. Validation of the method has demonstrated high precision, accuracy and extraction efficiency, making it a promising tool for regulatory compliance and consumer safety in the food industry. The following analytical characteristics were achieved: the limits of detection were 0.03–0.13 mg L−1, limits of quantification were 0.09–0.44 mg L−1, an extraction recovery exceeding 85 %, a linear range was from 1 to 100 mg L−1, and a relative standard deviation ranging from 2 % to 10 %. The experiments were confirmed by both Conductor Like Screening Model-Segment Activity Coefficient (COSMO-SAC) and the Non-Covalent Interaction using the Reduced Density Gradient of the DES-dye system in aqueous media.

Indirect Spectrophotometric Determination of Antidepressant Drugs by Oxidation Using Ponceau 4R Dye

A simple and sensitive indirect spectrophotometric method is developed for the assay of Adrenaline, Dopamine hydrochloride, and Methyldopa in their pure and pharmaceutical preparations. The method is based on the principle of oxidation of the above drugs with a known amount of the oxidizing agent, N-bromosuccinimide (NBS), in hydrochloric acid. The unreacted oxidant bleaches Ponceau 4R dye, then the absorbance of the remaining dye (ΔA) is measured at 507 nm. The method obeyed Beer’s law within the concentration range of 3.5-10, 4-15, and 5-20 μg/mL, with molar absorptivity values of 8.01×104, 5.32×104, and 4.93×104 L. mol-1cm-1 for Adrenaline, Dopamine hydrochloride and Methyldopa, respectively. The recovery ranged between 99.15 to 100.61%, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was less than 1.42 % for all drug compounds. The method was applied successfully to pharmaceutical preparations for the studied medicinal compounds from different origins, as its results were in good agreement with the original content of the drugs in their pharmaceutical formulations and with the standard addition procedure, which proved that there was no interference by the excipients.

Food Safety and Health Concerns of Synthetic Food Colors: An Update.

The toxicity of food additives is widely studied and concerns many consumers worldwide. Synthetic food colors are often considered an unnecessary risk to consumer health. Since the European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) re-evaluation between 2009 and 2014, the body of scientific literature on food colors has grown, and new evaluations are being published by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). Therefore, this narrative review aims to review the toxicological data that have become available since 2014. The reviewed colors are Quinoline Yellow, Sunset Yellow, Azorubine, Amaranth, Ponceau 4R, Erythrosine, Allura Red, Patent Blue, Indigo Carmine, Brilliant Blue FCF, Green S, Brilliant Black, Brown HT, and Lithol Rubine BK. Tartrazine was not included in this paper; the overwhelming amount of recent data on Tartrazine toxicity requires more space than this review can provide. The issues regarding the toxicity of synthetic food colors and real population exposures are being regularly examined and reviewed by relevant authorities, such as the EFSA and JECFA. The current ADI limits set by the authorities are mostly in agreement, and they seem safe. However, the EFSA and JECFA assessments of some of the colors are more than a decade old, and new evidence will soon be required.

Portable electrochemical sensing platform based on amidated GO-MOF and PEDOT:PSS for high-efficient detection of ponceau 4R.

Apromising electrochemical sensing platform for the detection of ponceau 4R in food has been fabricated based on the carboxylated graphene oxide (GO-COOH), metal-organic framework (MOF) UIO-66-NH2, and poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). To this endGO-COOH was covalently coupled with UIO-66-NH2 through amide reaction, endowing the material (GO-CONH-UIO-66) unique hierarchical pores and high chemical stability and as a result improving the conductivity of MOF and the dispersion of GO. After the addition of PEDOT:PSS into GO-CONH-UIO-66, the continuity and conductivity of the composite (PEDOT:PSS/GO-CONH-UIO-66) have been further enhanced, due to the high conductivity, favorable film-forming, and hydrophilic properties of PEDOT:PSS. Systematic electrochemical experiments confirm that the PEDOT:PSS/GO-CONH-UIO-66/GCE shows satisfactory electrochemical sensing properties towards the detection of ponceau 4R, with a wide linear detection range of 0.01-30μM, a low limit of detection of3.33nM, and a high sensitivity of 0.606 μA μM-1cm-2. ThePEDOT:PSS/GO-CONH-UIO-66 sensing platform was successfully used to detect ponceau 4R in beverage, and the detection results were compared with high-performance liquid chromatography. As a result, the PEDOT:PSS/GO-CONH-UIO-66 composite shows a promising application prospect for rapid detection of ponceau 4R in food and will play significant role in food safety detection and supervision.

ALTERATIONS IN RAT ILEAL WALL METRICS FOLLOWING ADMINISTRATION OF A COMPLEX OF FOOD CHEMICAL ADDITIVES DURIGN THE EARLY STAGES OF THE EXPERIMENT

The influence of exogenous factors is a common cause of digestive disorders. Food chemical additives are important in the list of harmful exogenous factors. Despite the availability of literature data on their adverse effects on various systems and organs, the information on their complex impact on the ileum is limited and requires further study. The present study aimed to determine the metric changes in the ileal wall of rats during the early stages of administration of a complex of food chemical additives including monosodium glutamate, sodium nitrite, and ponceau 4R. Materials and methods. The study was conducted on mature white rats, divided into control and experimental groups. The control group received saline, and the experimental group received a complex of food chemical additives prepared following the standard methodology for 1 and 4 weeks orally. Material sampling and morphometric studies were performed according to generally accepted methods. The following parameters of the ileum wall were determined: total average wall thickness and average thickness of the serous membrane, muscle layer, submucosal and mucosal layers lseparately. Results. Changes in the indicators were found after the first week of administration of the food additives complex. In particular, the total intestinal wall thickness increased by 1.51 times compared to the control; after the fourth week, this indicator slightly decreased, although it was 1.22 times higher than the control group (p<0.05). The average mucosal thickness was 1.67 and 1.35 higher than in the control group after the first and fourth week, respectively. The average thickness of the submucosal layer also changed; after the first week, this indicator was 1.12 times lower than the control one; after the fourth week, the indicator increased by 1.21 times and 1.34 times compared to the control group and the previous observation period (p<0.05), respectively. As for the muscular layer, compared to the control group, after the first week, this indicator was 1.58 times higher (p<0.05). After the fourth week, it was 1.19 times higher than the control group and 1.33 times lower than the previous period. The average thickness of the serous layer was 1.44 times higher after the first week and 1.58 times higher after the fourth week compared to the control group. Conclusion. Thus, the introduction of a complex of food chemical additives leads to metric changes in the ileal wall of the ileum at the early stages of the experiment due to hyperhydration of connective tissue, impaired blood circulation, and pericellular oedema of the structural components of all membranes.

Yellow and Red Synthetic Food Dyes and Potential Health Hazards: A Mini Review

Synthetic dyes are widely used in the food industry to maintain or restore the colour of food during processing or storage, the azo ones occupying the first place in terms of the extent of use. Compared to dyes obtained from natural sources, synthetic ones present relevant advantages, such as higher stability and lower cost. Despite these advantages, their use has been linked to side effects, such as allergic reactions, carcinogenic effects, behavioural and neurocognitive effects, but also medium and long-term toxicity. In this context, this review describes the most used yellow and red synthetic dyes, namely Tartrazine, Quinoline Yellow, Sunset Yellow FCF, Carmoisine/Azorubine, Amaranth, Ponceau 4R, Allura Red AC, as well as their applications in food products. Moreover, it aims to provide current data on the toxicity issues and the possible negative effects on children's behaviour of these dyes, based on the evaluations previously carried out by European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), but also on subsequent studies available in the literature.

Evaluation of synthesis of Tio2 nanoparticles via solgel method using acetone

This study focuses on improving the control of hydrolysis rates in the synthesis of titanium dioxide (TiO2) by introducing acetone as a co-solvent. The main goal is to achieve better control over precursor hydrolysis, leading to enhanced morphological control of the synthesized TiO2. The introduction of acetone, with its lower surface tension and dielectric constant compared to water, is expected to reduce the solvation power of water, thereby improving control over the hydrolysis process. The synthesized TiO2 photocatalyst is evaluated for its photocatalytic activity through the degradation of Ponceau 4R dye. The main results include a crystallite size of approximately 59.30 nm and a band gap energy (Eg) of 3.2 eV for the synthesized TiO2. Photocatalytic tests demonstrate a significant improvement in the discoloration and mineralization of Ponceau 4R dye compared to a standard oxide, with a 15 % increase in mineralization. Overall, the study highlights the effectiveness of acetone as a co-solvent in controlling the hydrolysis process and enhancing the photocatalytic activity of TiO2. Future perspectives include further refinement of the synthesis process and optimization of the photocatalyst for broader applications.

Study on the preparation and performance of PVDF/SMA/CdS Fenton-like membrane with both separation and dye degradation functions

Nowadays, the discharge of wastewater causes serious environmental pollution, affecting the living environment and the health of human beings. So the problem of wastewater treatment is imminent. In this context, the PVDF/SMA/CdS membranes had oil-water separation and dye degradation effects were prepared by using non-solvent phase transition and in-situ deposition methods. Its separation efficiency reached more than 98%, and the oil-water removal rate was at more than 90% after 5 times of recycling. Under visible light irradiation, it could completely degrade methylene blue solution (MB, 10 mg·L-1, pH=3) within 20 min, cochineal solution (Ponceau 4R) within 12 min, and chromium blue-black R (EBR) solution within 6 min, and the degradation rate was at more than 95% after 5 cycles. Therefore, the PVDF/SMA/CdS membrane can effectively treat wastewater. This study opens up a promising avenue for wastewater treatment technology with high potential for application.

Eco-Friendly Simultaneous Estimation of Ponceau 4R and Carmoisine Employing an Analytical Quality by Design-Aided RP-HPLC Method in Commercial Food Samples Utilizing a Green Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction Technique.

Ponceau 4R (E124) and carmoisine (CMS; E122) are frequently utilized azo synthetic dyes in the food industry owing to their aesthetically pleasing coloration and broad consumer acceptability. It is imperative to prioritize environmentally favorable technologies for quantifying these dyes, as excessive consumption of these poses significant health risks. The primary objective of this research was to establish a reversed-phase (RP)-HPLC method that could simultaneously detect Ponceau 4R and CMS, implementing green analytical chemistry (GAC) and analytical quality by design (AQbD), using an ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) technique in commercial food samples. An Agilent Eclipse Plus column (C18, 250 × 4.6 mm id, 5 µm) was utilized for effective separation with a mobile phase of ethanol-acetate buffer pH 5 (60:40, v/v), flow rate of 1 mL/min, and detection wavelength of 515 nm. Critical variables selected for method optimization were ethanol percentage and flow rate, determined using central composite design (CCD). In order to adhere to the 12 principles of green chemistry, hazardous solvents were substituted with ethanol, which is distinguished by its ease of use, effectiveness, and ecological sustainability. The greenness assessment was conducted utilizing the green analytical procedure index (GAPI), analytical eco-scale (AES), and analytical greenness metrics (AGREE). The respective retention times for Ponceau 4R and CMS were 2.276 and 3.450 min. The recovery rate of Ponceau 4R and CMS fluctuated between 70% and 102% and 80% and 102%, respectively, across various marketed food samples. The procedure passed validation in accordance with the International Conference on Harmonization Q14 guidelines. The devised method demonstrates that the validation parameters like linearity, precision, sensitivity, and reproducibility are within the specified limits of ICH guidelines. The greenness assesment tools GAPI, AES, and AGREE produced the most favorable results. In future, environmentally sustainable, solvent-based, robust AQbD methodologies for assessing varieties of food colorants may be adopted and improved commercially.

Low-energy-consumption rapid synthesis of carbon dots at room temperature from combusted food waste with versatile analytical applications

In this study, we developed a low-energy-consumption green method for synthesising carbon dots (CD) at room temperature using watermelon rind as the carbon source through a cutting process based on NaCl crystals. The synthesis process was rapid (<5 min) and facile. The synthesised CD were characterised using photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results revealed that the synthesised dots exhibited robust adsorption, a spherical shape and a uniform size distribution. The PL intensity of the quantum dots decrease due to the temperature rising, metal ions and ponceau 4R added. In contrast with PH, PL intensity increase, so these CD can serve as multifunctional sensing materials. Overall, this study presents an environmentally friendly method for the rapid synthesis of CD that are suitable for temperature, pH, metal ion and food sensing applications.

Surface modification of zeolite by cationic surfactant and the application on adsorptive removal of azo dye Ponceau 4R

The zeolite Permutit (Per) with the cubic crystal, 1.66 of the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio, 44.81 m2.g−1 of the specific surface area, 1.7 nm of the average pore radius, and the typical bonds of Si-OH, Si-O-Si, Si-O-Al, and O-Si-O-Si was investigated in the present study. The adsorptive removal efficiency of the azo dye PC4R was almost doubled from about 53.23% to 90.06% by Per surface modification with the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as an effective and high-performance adsorbent. The PC4R adsorptive removal was optimized at independent variables of pH 4, the ionic strength of 10 mM NaCl, the Per dosage of 6 mg.mL−1, and the short contact time of 15 min. Both the Langmuir and Freundlich models were reasonable to describe the PC4R adsorption isotherms on the CTAB@Per while the PC4R chemisorption kinetics were well accorded with the pseudo-second-order model. The PC4R multilayer adsorption capacity achieved an extrapolated maxima of 15.470 mg.g−1. The PC4R adsorption mechanisms were demonstrated by the FT-IR measurement to be primarily the electrostatic attractions between the CTAB and the PC4R, dipole-ion interactions, and hydrogen bondings between the PC4R molecules.

Assessment of Eutectic Solvent-Based Liquid-Liquid Microextraction to Determine Ponceau-4R in Various Beverage Samples

A sensitive, rapid, efficient, inexpensive, and easy-to-use vortex-assisted eutectic solvent microextraction process was extended to quantify Ponceau-4R (PN4R) in beverage samples followed by spectrophotometric detection. Here, a green solvent consisting of tetrabutylammonium bromide: n-octanol at a ratio of 1:3 was tested in the PN4R microextraction process. Also, different parameters affecting PN4R quantification through deep eutectic solvent in the microextraction model, including microliter volumes of extraction solvent, concentration of salt, extraction time, and pH were studied using multivariate procedures. Using this model, the maximum response was achieved with a eutectic solvent volume of 262 μL, extraction time of 5.3 min, pH 6.7, and 0.9% salt with Desirability = 1. The linear range was determined in optimum conditions to be from 15 to 1200 μg L−1. The enrichment factor and limit of detection were achieved to be 50-fold and 4.5 μg L−1, respectively. The limit of quantitation was 15 μg L−1. To monitor PN4R, this model has been used in fruit juice samples with favorable recoveries in the range of 97.8%–101%.
