Bayesian Meta-Analysis: Impacts of Eating Habits and Habitats on Omega-3 Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Composition and Growth in Cultured Fish

Omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LC-PUFAs) such as eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA) offer protective benefits against various pathological conditions, including atherosclerosis, obesity, inflammation, and autoimmune diseases. Marine fish and seafood are the primary sources of n-3 LC-PUFAs in the human diet. However, the inclusion of fish oil in aquafeeds is declining due to limited availability, fluctuating prices, sustainability concerns, and replacement with vegetable oils. While comprehensive narrative reviews on the impact of substituting fish oil with vegetable oil in aquafeeds exist, quantitative studies are relatively scarce and mainly focused on comparing the source of vegetable oils. Herein, we employed, for the first time, a Bayesian meta-analysis approach, collecting research data from 81 articles to quantitatively analyze the effects of dietary n-3 LC-PUFA levels on the n-3 LC-PUFA composition and growth performance in cultured fish. Our findings indicate that with the exception of herbivorous fish, dietary n-3 LC-PUFA levels significantly affect the EPA and DHA levels in the livers and muscles of carnivorous, omnivorous, freshwater, and marine fish. Additionally, the growths of freshwater and herbivorous fish were less affected by changes in dietary n-3 LC-PUFA levels compared to that of carnivorous and marine fish.

Arabidopsis diacylglycerol acyltransferase1 mutants require fatty acid desaturation for normal seed development.

Diacylglycerol acyltransferase1 (DGAT1) is the major enzyme that synthesizes triacylglycerols (TAG) during Arabidopsis seed development. Mutant dgat1 seeds possess low oil content in addition to a high polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) composition. Two genes encoding endoplasmic reticulum localized desaturase enzymes, fatty acid desaturase2 (FAD2) and fatty acid desaturase3 (FAD3), were upregulated in both dgat1-1 and dgat1-2 developing seeds. Crosses between both dgat1 mutant alleles and fad2-1 failed to generate plants homozygous for both dgat1 and fad2. Reciprocal crosses with wild-type plants demonstrated that both male and female dgat1 fad2 gametophytes were viable. Siliques from DGAT1/dgat1-1 fad2-1/fad2-1 and dgat1-1/dgat1-1 FAD2/fad2-1 possessed abnormal looking seeds that were arrested in the torpedo growth stage. Approximately 25% of the seeds exhibited this arrested phenotype, genetically consistent with them possessing the double homozygous dgat1 fad2 genotype. In contrast, double homozygous dgat1-1 fad3-2 mutant plants were viable. Seeds from these plants possessed higher levels of 18:2 while their fatty acid content was lower than dgat1 mutant controls. The results are consistent with a model where in the absence of DGAT1 activity, desaturation of fatty acids by FAD2 becomes essential to provide PUFA substrates for phospholipid:diacylglycerol acyltransferase (PDAT) to synthesize TAG. In a dgat1 fad2 mutant, seed development is aborted because TAG is unable to be synthesized by either DGAT1 or PDAT.

Redox balance and immunity of piglets pre- and post-E. coli challenge after treatment with hemp or fish oil, and vitamin E

This study investigated the influence of polyunsaturated fatty acid composition and vitamin E supplementation on oxidative status and immune responses in weanling piglets pre- and post-E. coli challenge. Suckling piglets (n = 24) were randomly selected from two litters for an oral supplementation (1 mL/day) with fish oil or hemp oil and vitamin E supplementation (60 mg natural vitamin E/mL oil) from day 10 to 28 of age. At day 29 and 30 of age, each piglet was orally inoculated with 6.7 × 108 and 3.96 × 108 CFU of F4 and F18 E. coli, respectively. Blood was sampled from all piglets on day 28 before E. coli challenge and on day 35 of age to investigate immunological and oxidative stress markers in plasma. One week after weaning and exposure to E. coli, a general reduction in the α-tocopherol concentration and activity of GPX1 was obtained. Vitamin E supplementation lowered the extent of lipid peroxidation and improved the antioxidative status and immune responses after E. coli challenge. Hemp oil had the greatest effect on antioxidant enzyme activity. Provision of hemp oil and vitamin E to suckling piglets may reduce the incidence of post-weaning diarrhea.

Impact of FADS genotype on polyunsaturated fatty acid content in human milk extracellular vesicles: A genetic association study.

Extracellular vesicles in human milk are critical in supporting newborn growth and development. Bioavailability of dietary extracellular vesicles may depend on the composition of membrane lipids. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the fatty acid desaturase gene cluster impact the content of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in human milk phospholipids. This study investigated the relation between variation in FADS1 and FADS2 with the content of polyunsaturated fatty acids in extracellular vesicles from human milk. Milk was obtained from a cohort of mothers (N = 70) at 2-4 weeks of lactation. SNPs in the FADS gene locus were determined using pyrosequencing for rs174546 in FADS1 and rs174575 in FADS2. Quantitative lipidomic analysis of polyunsaturated fatty acids in human milk and extracellular vesicles from human milk was completed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The rs174546 and rs174575 genotypes were independent predictors of the arachidonic acid content in extracellular vesicles. The rs174546 genotype also predicted eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid in extracellular vesicles. The reduced content of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in extracellular vesicles in human milk may be due to lower fatty acid desaturase activity in mothers who are carriers of the A allele in rs174546 or the G allele in rs174575. The polyunsaturated fatty acid composition of milk extracellular vesicles is predicted by the FADS genotype. These findings yield novel insights regarding extracellular vesicle content and composition that can inform the design of future research to explore how lipid metabolites impact the bioavailability of human milk extracellular vesicles.

Muscle biopsy long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid compositions, IMF and FMP in Australian pasture-based Bowen Genetics Forest Pastoral Angus, Hereford, and Wagyu Beef Cattle

BackgroundWe investigated breed and gender variations in the compositions of long-chain (≥ C20) omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC omega-3 PUFA), fat melting point (FMP) and intramuscular fat (IMF) contents in biopsy samples of the M. longissimus dorsi muscle of grazing beef cattle. The hypothesis that biopsy compositions of health-beneficial LC omega-3 PUFA, FMP and IMF in a pasture-based production system will vary with breed, was tested. Muscle biopsies were taken from 127 yearling pasture-based Angus, Hereford, and Wagyu heifers and young bulls exclusive to the Australian Bowen Genetics Forest Pastoral breeding stud averaging 12 ± 2.43 months of age and under the same management routine.ResultsBreed had a significant influence on IMF, FMP, and the compositions of oleic acid, α-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic (EPA), docosahexaenoic (DHA), docosapentaenoic (DPA), and total EPA + DHA + DPA in the M. longissimus dorsi muscle biopsies (P ≤ 0.03). The Wagyu breed had the highest (11.1%) and Hereford the lowest (5.9%) IMF (P = 0.03). The reverse trend was observed in FMP values where the Hereford breed had the highest (55 °C), Angus intermediate (46.5 °C), and Wagyu the lowest (33 °C) FMP. The Wagyu and Angus breeds had similar oleic fatty acid (18:1n-9) content, while the Hereford breed had the lowest (P < 0.01). The highest ALA, DPA, total EPA + DHA, total EPA + DHA + DPA and total ALA + EPA + DHA + DPA contents were detected in the Wagyu breed (P ≤ 0.03). The Hereford had similar EPA and DPA contents to the Angus (P ≥ 0.46). Total EPA + DHA + DPA contents in Wagyu, Angus, and Hereford were 28.8, 21.5, and 22.1 mg/100g tissue (P = 0.01), respectively. Sex was an important source of variation that influenced LC omega-3 PUFA composition, FMP and IMF, where yearling heifers had higher IMF (11.9% vs 5.3%), lower FMP (33°C vs 37°C), and higher LC omega-3 PUFA than bulls.ConclusionAll the results taken together indicate that the Wagyu breed at 28.8 mg/100g tissue, was the closest to meeting the Australia and New Zealand recommended source level threshold of 30 mg/100g tissue of health-beneficial ≥ C20 omega-3 FA content. Since gender was a significant determinant of LC omega-3 PUFA composition, IMF content and FMP, it should be factored into enhancement strategies of healthy meat eating quality traits in grazing cattle. These findings also suggest that the Bowen Genetics Forest Pastoral beef cattle studs are important sources of LC omega-3 PUFA that can be used to cover the deficit in these health claimable fatty acids in Western diets.

Association between polyunsaturated fatty acids in adipose tissue and mortality of colorectal cancer patients

IntroductionNutritional intake and dysregulation of fatty acid metabolism play a role in the progression of various tumors, but the consumption of fatty acids is difficult to assess accurately with dietary questionnaires. Biomarkers can objectively assess intake, storage and bioavailability. ObjectiveWe studied the association between the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) composition of abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (good indicator of dietary intake over 2–3 years) and all-cause mortality. MethodsIn the multicenter AGARIC study, samples from 203 patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) undergoing curative surgery, were harvested from subcutaneous adipose tissue, which were then analyzed for PUFA composition. ResultsAfter a median follow-up of 45 months, 76 patients died. These patients were more often men (72.4% versus 57.5%, P = 0.04), diabetic (32.9% versus 13.4%, P = 0.001), old (median: 74.5 versus 66.6 years, P < 0.001) and with high alcohol consumption (47.4% versus 30.7%, P = 0.005). An increased risk of death was observed with higher levels of 20:2 ω-6 (hazard ratiotertile3 vstertile1 (HRT3vsT1) 2.12; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.01–4.42; p-trend = 0.04), 22:4 ω-6 (HRT3vsT1 = 3.52; 95% CI = 1.51–8.17; p-trend = 0.005), and 22:5 ω-6 (HRT3vsT1 = 3.50; 95% CI = 1.56–7.87; p-trend = 0.002). Conversely, the risk of death seemed lower when higher concentrations of 18:3 ω-6 (HRT3vsT1 = 0.52; 95% CI = 0.27–0.99; p-trend = 0.04) and the essential fatty acid, α-linolenic acid 18:3 ω-3 (HRT3vsT1 = 0.47; 95% CI = 0.24–0.93; p-trend = 0.03) were observed. ConclusionThe risk of death was increased in CRC patients with higher concentrations of certain ω-6 PUFAs and lower concentrations of α-linolenic acid in their subcutaneous adipose tissue. These results reflect dietary habits and altered fatty acid metabolism. Our exploratory results warrant confirmation in larger studies with further exploration of the mechanisms involved.

Comparison of the Fatty Acid Composition in Phospholipid Species from Korean Human Milk.

In this study, the phospholipid species [i.e., phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylcholine (PC), and sphingomyelin (SM)] in human milk (HM) were compared according to their fatty acid (FA) composition. 34 HM samples were collected and classified into three groups (A < B < C) according to their fat content. Stearic acid (C18:0) was the main FA in PE, PC, and SM. The highest concentrations of arachidonic acid (AA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) were observed in PE, whereas docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was predominant in SM. Although PC exhibited the highest total saturated FAs (SFAs) and PE contained the highest unsaturated FAs (UFAs), very long-chain SFAs and monounsaturated FAs (MUFAs) were preferentially distributed in SM. PC and SM had higher saturation compared to PE. Regarding the effect of the fat content of HM on the FA composition of the phospholipid species, a limited influence was observed on the composition of SFAs and MUFAs of PE, SM, and particularly PC. However, a more pronounced effect on the composition of polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) in phospholipids was observed, especially for linoleic acid (LA), α-linolenic acid (ALA), EPA, and DHA, indicating that the composition of FAs in the phospholipid species was probably affected by the maternal diet.

Fatty acid profile, total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of seaweeds in Salinas Bay, Ecuador

The coastal waters of Ecuador have emerged as a favorable environment for the growth and development of several species of edible macroalgae or seaweeds. In this study, fatty acid profiles, total soluble polyphenol content, and antioxidant capacity of seven species of macroalgae (four red algae, two brown algae and one green algae) collected from Salinas Bay, Santa Elena Province, Ecuador, were evaluated. Saturated fatty acids C14:0, C15:0, C16:0 and C18:0 were found in almost all organisms, from which palmitic acid showed the highest proportion (10.7-37.1%). Green and brown seaweeds exhibited a major content of unsaturated fatty acids. Monounsaturated fatty acid composition was represented by several isomers of C16:1 and C18:1, mainly palmitoleic (3.0-6.6%) and oleic (0.8-11.1%) acids. Polyunsaturated fatty acid composition ranged from 5.47 to 26.61%, with ratios of total n-6/n-3 acids lower than 3.3. Linoleic (C18:2, n-6, 1.16-7.73%) and eicosapentaenoic (C22:5, EPA, n-3, 1.44-5.92%) acids were found in the majority of the seaweeds. The total polyphenol content of the seaweeds was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu method (765 nm), and ranged from 147.28 to 1,062.20 mg equivalents of gallic acid (GAE) per 100 g of dry seaweed. The antioxidant capacity was determined by the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (517 nm). Only Acanthophora spicifera, Spatoglossum schroederi, and Ulva lactuca showed good radical-scavenging (14.18-3,379.47 mg Trolox equivalents (TE) per 100 g of dry seaweed). The results confirm the potential use of macroalgae in the study area as an important source of nutritional compounds, especially brown and green algae, which could be a recommended food supplement even in the treatment of some diseases.

CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID AND FATTY ACID ISOMERS IN SELECTED COLD PRESSED OILS: ANALYSIS BY GC/FID TECHNIQUE

The conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers in cold pressed oils [pomegranate seed oil (PGSO), linseed oil (LSO), black cumin seed oil (BCSO), nettle seed oil (NSO),grape seed oil (GSO), sesame seed oil (SSO),safflower oil (SFO), pumpkin seed oil (PSO), wheat germ oil (WGO), fig seed oil (FSO), coriander oil (CO), walnut oil (WO) and coconut oil (CNO)] extracted with lab–scale screw press machine were further subjected to gas chromatography/flame ionization detection (GC/FID) analysis. The composition of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and saturated fatty acids (SFAs) of the samples was also determined. The five different positional and geometric isomers of CLA [cis–9, cis–11 CLA, cis–9, trans–11 CLA, trans–9, cis–11 CLA, trans–9, trans–11 CLA and trans–10, cis–12 CLA] were also well separated by a highly polar column (100m×0.2μm×0.25mm i.d; HP–88 cyanopropyl) and an applied GC temperature program. It was concluded that the samples were all rich in total CLA (∑CLA) and they were found between 0.14% for PSO and 2.11% for SSO. The most abundant CLA isomer was in general to be cis–9, trans–11 CLA form, which represented the content of isomer between 3.15% and 72.08% of ∑CLA. Besides, the ∑SFA values were detected between 2.43% and 93.14%, ∑MUFA values were between 4.60% and 71.11% and ∑PUFA values were between 1.79% and 87.59%. Therefore, this study might offer valuable information for the introduction of new food sources, as well as incorporation into medicinal purposes and food formulations which have the potential to be commercially valuable.

The association between human milk fatty acid composition in mothers with an elevated body mass index and infant growth changes

Few studies have investigated alternations in human milk polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) composition in the context of maternal obesity and its effects on infant growth trajectories. This study explored whether maternal weight status and breastfeeding type influence human milk FA composition and infant anthropometry during the first six months of life. Mother-infant dyads were enrolled from the Prediction of Allergies in Taiwanese Children birth cohort study. Data concerning maternal pre-pregnancy weight, infants' breastfeeding practices, and anthropometric data were obtained regularly. We identified and compared between the composition of 30 FAs in the colostrum and 2-month milk, respectively, in obese/overweight (OB/OW) and normal-weight (NW) mothers. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to determine the association between PUFA composition at different lactation stages and infant anthropometric parameter changes and to identify the independent variables for body mass index (BMI) z-scores by six months of age. We included 338 mother-infant dyads (OB/OW mothers, 16.9%). OB/OW mothers exhibited lower total n-3 PUFAs (P=0.035), higher ratios of arachidonic acid (C20:4n-6)/eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5n-3)+docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3), and n-6/n-3 PUFA in colostrum (P=0.037 and 0.011, respectively), and their offspring had higher body weight and BMI z-scores. Nevertheless, no PUFA composition or n-6/n-3 PUFA ratios in colostrum and 2-month milk were associated with anthropometric parameter changes by age 6 months. Infant birth weight z-scores were independently associated with BMI outcomes at age 6 months (adjusted β=0.16, 95% confidence interval (0.05-0.35), P=0.010) CONCLUSION: Neither n-3 nor n-6 PUFA profiles nor n-6/n-3 PUFA ratios at different lactation stages were found to be associated with anthropometric changes by age 6 months, suggesting that human milk PUFA composition may not be an important determinant of early infant growth trajectories.

Effects of Dam and Sire Breeds on Lamb Carcass Quality and Composition in Pasture-Based Systems.

This study explored the impacts of sire and dam breed on carcass quality and composition in a pasture-based system and the use of DXA to rapidly rank carcasses for leanness. Southdown (SD) and Suffolk (SF) ewes were mated to Texel (TX) or SD rams to produce seventy-nine lambs. Lambs were raised on pasture-based systems with limited grain supplementation. Lamb birth weight was greater (p < 0.01) for TX, regardless of dam breed. Lambing rate was lower (p < 0.01) for SD than SF ewes. Circulating myostatin concentrations were greater (p < 0.05) on d 42 than d 75 or d 110 but did not differ by sire breed. Texel-sired lambs had greater (p < 0.01) carcass weight, ribeye area and quality grade compared to SD-sired. Total and primal fat mass as predicted from DXA was higher (p < 0.05) in carcasses from SD than TX sires. Muscles from TX lambs had greater (p < 0.05) polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) composition than SD-sired. Shear force values were influenced (p < 0.01) by dam breed, muscle cut and postmortem age but not by sire breed. The use of TX sires in pasture-based systems improved carcass leanness and muscle PUFA concentrations without altering tenderness.

Correlations between omega-3 fatty acids and inflammatory/glial abnormalities: the involvement of the membrane and neurotransmitter dysfunction in schizophrenia.

Macrophages or T-lymphocytes triggered inflammation and, consequently, activated glial cells may contribute to neuroinflammation and neurotransmitter dysfunction in schizophrenia (SZ), while omega(n)-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can attenuate some SZ symptoms through anti-inflammatory effects. However, the correlations between macrophage/T-lymphocyte-produced cytokines and glia phenotypes, between inflammatory status and PUFAs composition, between cytokines and neurotransmitter function, and between n-3 PUFAs and neurotransmitter abnormality in SZ are unclear. Changes in T-helper (h) patterns, peripheral macrophage/glial markers, PUFAs profile, membrane fluidity, and neurotransmitter functions were evaluated in SZ patients (n = 50) and healthy controls (n = 30) using ELISA, gas chromatography, fluorescence anisotropy techniques, and HPLC, respectively. Compared to the control, blood lymphocyte proliferation, the concentration of macrophage/microglia phenotype M1 markers, including cytokines IL-1β, TNF-α (Th1) and IL-6 (Th2), and astrocyte phenotype A1 marker S100β was significantly increased, while IL-17 and n-3 PUFAs contents, n-3/n-6 ratio, and membrane fluidity (FLU) were significantly decreased in SZ. Moreover, increased DA and HVA, decreased 5-HT and NE, and their metabolites appeared in SZ. Moreover, negative correlations between IL-6 and A2 marker Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) or n-3 PUFAs EPA and between IL-1β and FLU or 5HIAA, while positive correlations between EPA and 5-HIAA and between FLU and DHA were found in SZ. These findings showed (1) no clear Th pattern, but pro-inflammatory-dominant immunity occurred; (2) the pro-inflammatory pattern may result in the activated microglia M1 and astrocyte A1 phenotype; and (3) increased pro-inflammatory cytokines were related to decreased n-3 PUFA and decreased membrane fluidity and dysfunctional neurotransmitter systems in SZ.

Dietary supplementation with honeycomb extracts positively improved egg nutritional and flavor quality, serum antioxidant and immune functions of laying ducks.

Honeycomb is a traditional natural health medicine and has antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antitumor activities. It is currently unclear whether honeycomb extract supplementation has positive effects on the intensive farming laying duck production. This study aims to evaluate the effects of honeycomb extracts on the laying performance, egg nutritional and flavor quality, serum biochemical indexes, and antioxidant and immune status in laying ducks. A total of 672 healthy 28-week-old Shanma laying ducks with similar laying performance and body weight were randomly distributed into four dietary treatments with 6 replicates of 28 birds. The birds in each treatment were fed the basal diet supplemented with 0 (control group), 0.5, 1.0 or 1.5 g/kg honeycomb extracts, respectively. Feed and water were provided ad libitum for 45 days. Laying performance, egg quality, egg nutrition and flavor quality, serum parameters were assessed. The results showed that compared with the control group, honeycomb extracts addition significantly increased the average daily feed intake but did not affect the other laying performance indexes, egg quality or serum biochemical indexes of laying ducks. Dietary supplementation with honeycomb extracts significantly increased crude protein content and decreased the contents of cholesterol and trimethylamine in eggs. Diets supplemented with 1.5 g/kg honeycomb extracts significantly improved egg total amino acids and flavor amino acids contents, monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids composition and enhanced the serum antioxidant activity and immune functions of ducks. Duck eggs are rich in nutrients and a valuable source of high-quality food for human, while they are rarely consumed directly by consumers because of their stronger fishy odor and lower sensory quality. Many studies have showed that the influence of dietary supplementation on egg components. This study indicated that dietary supplementation with honeycomb extracts positively reduced the contents of egg cholesterol and trimethylamine, improve egg amino acids contents and fatty acid profiles, enhanced serum antioxidant and immune status of laying ducks. The recommended supplemental level of honeycomb extracts was 1.5 g/kg in the diet of laying ducks.

67 Infant Health Status Impacts the Neutrophil Phenotypes and Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Composition in Human Milk

Abstract Background The abundance of human milk leukocytes, including neutrophils, changes in response to the health status of mothers and their infants. Elevated leukocyte counts occur during infant infection and return to baseline levels upon recovery. However, it is unclear how infant health status can affect the neutrophil phenotypes and the concentration of fatty acids in their mothers’ human milk. Objectives This study investigates the association between infant health status and human milk neutrophil counts and activation state, and fatty acid levels, in human milk. Design/Methods This is a prospective cohort study of 50 healthy breastfeeding mothers recruited from St. Michael’s hospital, in Toronto, Ontario, who were followed up from 2-4 weeks until 4 months postpartum. Human milk samples were collected from participants and data regarding infant health status were collected from self-reported questionnaires completed by participants at both timepoints, then imputed based on whether infants had taken antibiotics, had been hospitalized, or had been diagnosed with a medical condition, at least 2 weeks prior to samples collection. Neutrophils were quantified using flow cytometry and labelled with a panel of antibodies to detect specific cluster of differentiation (CD) biomarkers. Fatty acids were identified and quantified using a gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID). Linear mixed-effects models were used to evaluate the correlation between infant health status and changes in neutrophil counts, along with their expressed CD markers, and fatty acids composition in human milk during lactation. Results The CD markers were classified into 4 categories based on their function: degranulation/activation markers (CD63, CD64, and CD66a), an immunoregulation marker (CD16), adhesion markers (CD11b, CD18), and a lipopolysaccharide receptor (CD14). Human milk from mothers whose infants had a health condition had neutrophils which significantly expressed elevated levels of the CD64 biomarker (β: 85.65, p=0.009 in adjusted models), compared to human milk from mothers of healthy infants. However, there were no significant associations between infant health status, absolute hmPMN counts, andother CD biomarkers (p&amp;gt;0.05). There were also elevated levels of arachidonic acid (β: 0.12, p=0.013) and C22:5n-6 (β: 0.06, p=0.015) fatty acids in the human milk of mothers whose infants had a health condition, compared with human milk from mothers of healthy infants, after adjusting for maternal age, post-pregnancy body mass index, infant sex, and infant feeding pattern. Conclusion This study demonstrates that infant health status is associated with changes in human milk immunological components, suggesting an inflammatory protective response mechanism in the mammary glands triggered by infants infection. How these alterations can affect infant health outcomes in the short and longer terms need critical consideration.

Sensory Evaluation and Fatty Acid Composition of Broiler Chickens Fed Diets Containing with Prosopis Africana Essential Oil

Exploring the use of phytogenic components in plants is one of the ways to ensure safety in food and sustainable livestock production. This experiment was designed to investigate the sensory evaluation and fatty acid composition of broiler chickens fed diets containing Prosopis africana essential oil. A total of 540 – one- day- old broiler chicks (Arbo Acres) were randomly distributed into 6 treatments, each containing six replicates of 15 birds. Experimental diets were adequate in all nutrients (NRC, 1994). Birds in treatment one was fed basal diet without Prosopis africana oil, basal diet with antibiotic growth promoter (oxytetracycline at 2.5 g/kilogram) was fed to treatment two while treatment three, four, five and six were fed basal diet supplemented with 200 mg, 400 mg, 600 mg and 800 mg per kilogram respectively. Completely randomized design was used and the experiment lasted for 56 days. Feed and fresh water were offered ad libitum and other management practices were rigorously followed. Result revealed that the composition of total monosaturated fatty acid and total polyunsaturated fatty acid were significantly (P˂0.05) influenced by the treatments. Total saturated fatty acid (TSFA) levels decrease as the level of Prosopis africana oil increases across the treatments (P˂0.05). TSFA values were highest in treatment 1, intermediate in treatment 2 and lowest in treatment three through six. Omega 3: omega 6 fatty acid and artheriogenicity index were significantly (P˂0.05) different among the treatments. Prosopis africana oil also influenced color, flavor, tenderness, juiciness, texture, and general acceptability of broilers meat. It was concluded that the dietary supplementation of Prosopis africana oil has a number of phyto-constituents that can modify the fatty acid of meat, enhancing its quality, shelf life and sensory attributes. Without having a negative impact on the health of birds. It can be added to the diet of broiler chickens up to 800 mg per kilogram.

Evaluation of polyunsaturated fatty acids content in the three stages of breast milk: colostrum, transitional and mature milk of a nursing mother submitted to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery two months prior to pregnancy: Case study

The purpose of this case study was to investigate polyunsaturated fatty acids in colostrum, transitional milk and mature milk of a nursing mother attended to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass two months prior to pregnancy. For this, was collected 2ml (colostrum), 4ml (transitional milk) and 4ml (mature milk) samples obtained by manual expression of the breast that was not sucked in the last feeding, in the morning and placed in Eppendorfs-type microtubes. The fatty acid composition was performed by means of gas chromatography. The mean proportions of fat in colostrum, transition milk and mature milk were: eicosapentaenoic acid: 0.06%; 0.05% and 0.06%; docosahexaenoic acid: 0.12%, 0.08% and 0.09%; arachidonic acid: 0.58%, 0.37% and 0.42%, respectively; trans fatty from the industrial process: 0.11%, 0.08% and 0.12% and trans fatty from ruminant sources (0.09%, 0.10% and 0.12%, respectively. The relevance of this case study lies in the fact that it shares knowledge about on the fatty acid composition of breast milk from a nursing mother post Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The mean linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid found in the mature milk was below the means found in studies carried out in Brazil from eutrophic women who did not underwent bariatric surgery. In this study, trans fatty acids were found in maternal milk but considered low values. As a relevant recommendation for future work, it is suggested that research be carried out with a larger population undergoing such a procedure to investigate the composition of polyunsaturated fatty acids in breast milk.

Study of the effect of canola proteins-xanthan based Pickering emulsion as animal fat replacer in a food matrix produced from mechanically separated meat

Pickering emulsions stabilized by protein microgel, and hydrocolloid have shown desirable properties to be used as animal fat replacers. However, the potential applications of these structures as animal fat replacers in meat systems formulations have not been explored yet. Therefore, novel Pickering emulsions stabilized by canola proteins microgels and xanthan gum were developed, and their potential as animal fat replacer in meat systems was assessed for the first time. In the present study, 25, 50, 75, and 100% animal fat content were replaced by Pickering emulsion. Moreover, the obtained results revealed that complete fat replacement with canola proteins-based Pickering emulsion in meat emulsion improved its nutritional value by significantly enhancing the percentage of protein, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acid composition, and reduction of saturated fatty acid content compared to control (100% animal fat). Reformulation with PEs enhanced the meat systems' technological behavior such as emulsion stability and cooking loss, and oxidative stability. Also, significant total color difference (ΔE *) was observed only in samples with 100% fat replacement. Meat systems containing fat replacement ≤50% showed the closest texture parameters to the control sample. This study provides a promising alternative to replace animal fat with plant-based ingredients in meat systems.

Mice prenatally exposed to valproic acid do not show autism-related disorders when fed with polyunsaturated fatty acid-enriched diets

Dietary supplementations with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) have been explored in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) but their efficiency and potential in ameliorating cardinal symptoms of the disease remain elusive. Here, we compared a n-3 long-chain (LC) PUFA dietary supplementation (n-3 supp) obtained from fatty fish with a n-3 PUFA precursor diet (n-3 bal) obtained from plant oils in the valproic acid (VPA, 450 mg/kg at E12.5) ASD mouse model starting from embryonic life, throughout lactation and until adulthood. Maternal and offspring behaviors were investigated as well as several VPA-induced ASD biological features: cerebellar Purkinje cell (PC) number, inflammatory markers, gut microbiota, and peripheral and brain PUFA composition. Developmental milestones were delayed in the n-3 supp group compared to the n-3 bal group in both sexes. Whatever the diet, VPA-exposed offspring did not show ASD characteristic alterations in social behavior, stereotypies, PC number, or gut microbiota dysbiosis while global activity, gait, peripheral and brain PUFA levels as well as cerebellar TNF-alpha levels were differentially altered by diet and treatment according to sex. The current study provides evidence of beneficial effects of n-3 PUFA based diets, including one without LCPUFAs, on preventing several behavioral and cellular symptoms related to ASD.

The influence of heat treatment type on the fat component and heterocyclic aromatic amines formation in minced poultry meat products

In this study the influence of heat treatment type on the change in the fatty acid composition, indices and parameters of fat oxidation, the level of heterocyclic amines formation in the chopped poultry ready-to-eat products enriched with ω‑3 fatty acids and an antioxidant complex were studied. The composition of ingredients and recipes of ready-to-eat products are developed with consideration of the medical and biological requirements for the diets of oncological patients. These ready-to-eat products feature some antioxidant substances in their composition that can bind free radicals, and provide for a reduction in the risk of carcinogens formation during the manufacturing process. The heat treatment was run in several ways, also called as modes — cooking in a microwave oven (MW), cooking in a convection oven in the “convection” mode with preliminary short-term roasting, steam cooking. For comparison, the conventional, i. e. not enriched food sample was used as a control one. The introduction of ω‑3 fatty acids into the food formulation made it possible to change the fatty acid composition towards increasing the proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). It was found that the profile of fatty acids was influenced by both the ingredients of the product and the type of its heat treatment. The joint use of a PUFA source and a complex of antioxidants made it possible to obtain a ready-to-eat product with a high level of ω‑3; and to ensure the ratio of ω‑6 group acids: ω‑3 ratio amounts to 1–2:1. Heat treatment of enriched semi-finished products by microwave cooking and by steam cooking showed a lesser effect on the change in the content and composition of polyunsaturated fatty acids — the loss of fatty acids was 1.2% and 2.8%, respectively, while in the “convection” cooking mode with preliminary roasting this loss was equal to 3.5%. It was found that the antioxidant complex in the composition of the food product and gentle heat treatment methods cause less lipid peroxidation and the formation of carcinogenic heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAA) during the food manufacturing process.
