Research progress on blood compatibility of hemoperfusion adsorbent materials.

This comprehensive review examines the latest developments in improving the blood compatibility of hemoperfusion adsorbents. By leveraging advanced coating and modification techniques, including albumin-collodion, cellulose, hydrogel, and heparin coatings, notable enhancements in blood compatibility have been achieved across diverse adsorbent types, such as carbon-based, resin-based, and polysaccharide-based materials. Despite promising laboratory results, the intricate manufacturing processes and elevated costs present significant challenges for broad clinical application. Therefore, future endeavors should focus on cost-benefit analysis, large-scale production strategies, in-depth exploration of blood-material interactions, and innovative technologies to propel the development of safer and more effective blood purification therapies.

O-PHTHALALDEHYDE CROSS-LINKED CHITOSAN MEMBRANE AS A QUASI-SOLID-STATE ELECTROLYTE FOR SUPERCAPACITORS

This study reports a stepwise formation method of a chitosan membrane cross-linked with o-phthalaldehyde and its use as a polymer matrix in a quasi-solid-state-electrolytebased supercapacitor. The proposed method of cross-linking in chitosan solution and evaporation of the solvent yielded a homogeneous and durable chitosan-o-phthalaldehyde membrane, which, after dipping in an aqueous 2 M lithium sulfate solution, formed a quasi-solid-state-electrolyte (CS/OPAQSSE). The prepared CS/OPA-QSSE was then used in an electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) cell to study its electrochemical properties. The electrochemical performance of the EDLC cell was determined by using the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charging/discharging techniques. The results showed that the EDLC cell with the CS/OPA-QSSE is a fully functional and efficient device. The specific capacitance values calculated for the CS/OPA-QSSE EDLC (up to 115 F g–1) always surpassed the reference cell based on a commercial glass fibre separator Therefore, the proposed chitosan modification can be considered as a future alternative to produce other polysaccharide-based materials for electrochemical use.

Modified Cellulose-Based Waste for Enhanced Adsorption of Selected Heavy Metals from Wastewater.

Due to industrial growth and its impact on the environment, the increasing amount of industrial waste requires a comprehensive approach aligned with the principles of sustainable development. The main goals are not only to preserve natural resources but also to encourage innovation in the reuse of waste materials. In an attempt to reduce the problems regarding waste disposal and wastewater treatment in the textile industry, fibrous textile waste was used as a starting material to obtain carbon adsorbents for the removal of pollutants from wastewater. Waste cotton and mixed yarns, mainly consisting of polysaccharide cellulose, were hydrothermally carbonized and activated with KOH to convert them into efficient carbon adsorbents for heavy metal removal from water. Characterization of carbonized material showed that after activation, an increase in specific surface area (up to 872 m2/g) and content of surface oxygen groups (6.04 mmol/g) leads to a higher affinity towards heavy metal ions, especially lead ions, and high adsorption capacity of 19.98 mg/g obtained for activated cotton yarns. The results of this research represent a contribution to the reduction of waste materials by modifying them into adsorbents, while the regeneration of adsorbents is an example of the practical application of polysaccharide-based materials in the purification of wastewater containing various heavy metal ions.

Characteristics of carrageenan from seaweed hydrolysis using marine fungi as hard-shell capsule material

Carrageenan is a polysaccharide extracted from red algae and can be used as a raw material for hard-shell capsules. Carrageenan can be produced by biological hydrolysis of marine fungi. The viscosity of carrageenan resulting from hydrolysis using marine fungi is lower than that of commercial carrageenan. Gelatine can be used to modify the characteristics of polysaccharide-based materials. The characteristics and types of carrageenan and plasticizers influence the interactions between carrageenan and gelatin. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of carrageenan produced by seaweed hydrolysis of a hard-shell capsule material. The physical characteristics of the carrageenan produced by hydrolysis were determined, including yield, viscosity, and gel strength. The properties of the hard-shell capsules, including dimensions, capsule weight, disintegration time, and moisture content, were analyzed. The yield was 25%, and the viscosity and gel strength of carrageenan were 45 cP and 175 gf, respectively. Carrageenan contains 13% moisture, 8% ash, and 8% cellulose. Semi-refined carrageenan produced by this treatment was used to prepare hard-shell capsules. The capsule made from semi-refined carrageenan had a body length of 18 mm, capsule length of 10 mm, capsule weight of 0.9 grams, disintegration time of 10 min, and moisture content of 12%.

Recent Progress in Polysaccharide-Based Materials for Energy Applications: A Review.

In recent years, polysaccharides have emerged as a promising alternative for the development of environmentally friendly materials. Polysaccharide-based materials have been mainly studied for applications in the food, packaging, and biomedical industries. However, many investigations report processing routes and treatments that enable the modification of the inherent properties of polysaccharides, making them useful as materials for energy applications. The control of the ionic and electronic conductivities of polysaccharide-based materials allows for the development of solid electrolytes and electrodes. The incorporation of conductive and semiconductive phases can modify the permittivities of polysaccharides, increasing their capacity for charge storage, making them useful as active surfaces of energy harvesting devices such as triboelectric nanogenerators. Polysaccharides are inexpensive and abundant and could be considered as a suitable option for the development and improvement of energy devices. This review provides an overview of the main research work related to the use of both common commercially available polysaccharides and local native polysaccharides, including starch, chitosan, carrageenan, ulvan, agar, and bacterial cellulose. Solid and gel electrolytes derived from polysaccharides show a wide range of ionic conductivities from 0.0173 × 10-3 to 80.9 × 10-3 S cm-1. Electrodes made from polysaccharides show good specific capacitances ranging from 8 to 753 F g-1 and current densities from 0.05 to 5 A g-1. Active surfaces based on polysaccharides show promising results with power densities ranging from 0.15 to 16 100 mW m-2. These investigations suggest that in the future polysaccharides could become suitable materials to replace some synthetic polymers used in the fabrication of energy storage devices, including batteries, supercapacitors, and energy harvesting devices.

Novel 3D printed polysaccharide-based materials with prebiotic activity for potential treatment of diaper rash

Diaper rash, mainly occurring as erythema and itching in the diaper area, causes considerable distress to infants and toddlers. Increasing evidence suggests that an unequal distribution of microorganisms on the skin contributes to the development of diaper dermatitis. Probiotic bacteria, like Staphylococcus epidermidis, are crucial for maintaining a healthy balance in the skin's microbiome, among others, through their fermentative metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids. Using a defined prebiotic as a carbon source (e.g., as part of the diaper formulation) can selectively trigger the fermentation of probiotic bacteria. A proper material choice can reduce diaper rash incidence by diminishing the skin exposure to wetness and faeces. Using 3D printing, we fabricated carbon-rich materials for the top sheet layer of baby diapers that enhance the probiotic activity of S. epidermidis. The developed materials' printability, chemical composition, swelling ability, and degradation rate were analysed. In addition, microbiological tests evaluated their potential as a source of in situ short-chain fatty acid production. Finally, biocompatibility testing with skin cells evaluated their safety for potential use as part of diapers. The results demonstrate a cost-effective approach for producing novel materials that can tailor the ecological balance of the skin microflora and help treat diaper rash.

Constructing network structures to enhance stability and target deposition of selenium nanoparticles via amphiphilic sodium alginate and alkyl glycosides

Dietary selenium (Se) supplementation has recently received increasing attention; however, Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) exhibit poor stability and tend to aggregate in aqueous solution. Therefore, enhancing the stability of SeNPs and their effective delivery to plants remain challenging. In this study, sodium alginate (SA) and lysozyme (LZ) were reacted via the wet-heat Maillard reaction (MR) to obtain amphiphilic alginate-based polymers (SA-LZ). Alkyl glycosides (APG) were introduced into SA-LZ to enhance the deposition of SeNPs in leaves. Thus, a renewable and degradable polysaccharide-based material (SA-LZ/APG) loaded with Se formed an amphiphilic alginate-based-based shell with a Se core. Notably, the encapsulation of SeNPs into a polysaccharide base (SA-LZ/APG) increased the stabilization of SeNPs and resulted in orange–red, zero-valent, monoclinic and spherical SeNPs with a mean diameter of approximately 43.0 nm. In addition, SA-LZ/APG-SeNPs reduced the interfacial tension of plant leaves and increased the Se content of plants compared to the blank group. In vitro studies have reported that SA-LZ/APG-SeNPs and SA-LZ-SeNPs have significantly better clearance of DDPH and ABTS than that of APG-SeNPs. Thus, we believe that SA-LZ/APG is a promising smart delivery system that can synergistically enhance the stability of SeNPs in aqueous solutions and improve the bioavailability of Se nutrient solutions.

B ← N coordination bond reinforced dynamic fluorescence of pH-responsive amphiphile alginate aggregates for anti-counterfeiting

High quantum yield polysaccharide-based materials are significative for the dynamic anti-counterfeiting, while that are limited by weak fluorescence. However, natural polysaccharides with weak fluorescence are not suitable for anti-counterfeiting. Herein, alginate derivatives (SA-PBA) exhibiting aggregation-induced emission with high-quantum yields were synthesized by grafting phenylboronic acid (PBA) onto a sodium alginate (SA) chain. As the concentration increases, polymer assembly can be induced to form more compact soft colloidal aggregates, which enhances the fluorescence properties of alginate derivatives by introducing B ← N coordination bonds in the hydrophobic microregions. Interestingly, the clustered aggregates of SA-PBA can be dynamically controlled by pH, realizing the reversible adjustment of fluorescence. The corresponding mechanism is revealed by the combination of coarse-grained simulations and experiments. It is found that SA-PBA uses a hydrophobic driving force and hydrogen bond interaction to self-assemble in an aqueous solution and promote fluorescence emission. Moreover, the fluorescence quantum yield of SA-PBA can reach 14.4 % and can be reversibly altered by tuning soft colloidal microstructures. Therefore, a reversible information encryption system of SA-PBA is developed for anti-counterfeiting. This work shed some light on how to design novel anti-counterfeit materials based on natural polysaccharides and optimize the dynamic fluorescence conditions.

New insight from MALDI-TOF MS and multivariate data analysis on the botanical origin of polysaccharide-based paint binders in ancient Egypt.

Polysaccharide-based materials of plant origin are known to have been used as binding media in paint and ground layers of artifacts from ancient Egypt, including wall paintings, cartonnages and sarcophagi. The use of gums from Acacia, Astragalus and Prunus genera has been suggested in the literature on the basis of their qualitative or quantitative monosaccharide profile after complete chemical hydrolysis. The introduction of partial enzymatic digestion of the polysaccharide material, followed by analysis of the released oligosaccharides by matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry, has proved effective in discriminating among gums from different genera, as well as among species within the Acacia genus. In this study, the previously built Acacia database was expanded, principal component analysis (PCA) was used to aid in grouping of the samples, and data interpretation was refined following a modified acacieae taxonomy. Application of the analytical strategy to investigate the paint binders in artworks from ancient Egypt allowed qualitative discrimination of gums at a species level, and provided new insights into the artists' material choices.

Aerogels as Carriers for Oral Administration of Drugs: An Approach towards Colonic Delivery.

Polysaccharide aerogels have emerged as a highly promising technology in the field of oral drug delivery. These nanoporous, ultralight materials, derived from natural polysaccharides such as cellulose, starch, or chitin, have significant potential in colonic drug delivery due to their unique properties. The particular degradability of polysaccharide-based materials by the colonic microbiota makes them attractive to produce systems to load, protect, and release drugs in a controlled manner, with the capability to precisely target the colon. This would allow the local treatment of gastrointestinal pathologies such as colon cancer or inflammatory bowel diseases. Despite their great potential, these applications of polysaccharide aerogels have not been widely explored. This review aims to consolidate the available knowledge on the use of polysaccharides for oral drug delivery and their performance, the production methods for polysaccharide-based aerogels, the drug loading possibilities, and the capacity of these nanostructured systems to target colonic regions.

Inducing an LCST in hydrophilic polysaccharides via engineered macromolecular hydrophobicity

Thermoresponsive polysaccharide-based materials with tunable transition temperatures regulating phase-separated microdomains offer substantial opportunities in tissue engineering and biomedical applications. To develop novel synthetic thermoresponsive polysaccharides, we employed versatile chemical routes to attach hydrophobic adducts to the backbone of hydrophilic dextran and gradually increased the hydrophobicity of the dextran chains to engineer phase separation. Conjugating methacrylate moieties to the dextran backbone yielded a continuous increase in macromolecular hydrophobicity that induced a reversible phase transition whose lower critical solution temperature can be modulated via variations in polysaccharide concentration, molecular weight, degree of methacrylation, ionic strength, surfactant, urea and Hofmeister salts. The phase separation is driven by increased hydrophobic interactions of methacrylate residues, where the addition of surfactant and urea disassociates hydrophobic interactions and eliminates phase transition. Morphological characterization of phase-separated dextran solutions via scanning electron and flow imaging microscopy revealed the formation of microdomains upon phase transition. These novel thermoresponsive dextrans exhibited promising cytocompatibility in cell culture where the phase transition exerted negligible effects on the attachment, spreading and proliferation of human dermal fibroblasts. Leveraging the conjugated methacrylate groups, we employed photo-initiated radical polymerization to generate phase-separated hydrogels with distinct microdomains. Our bottom-up approach to engineering macromolecular hydrophobicity of conventional hydrophilic, non-phase separating dextrans to induce robust phase transition and generate thermoresponsive phase-separated biomaterials will find applications in mechanobiology, tissue repair and regenerative medicine.

Ecofriendly polysaccharide-based alginate/pluronic F127 semi-IPN hydrogel with magnetic collectability for precise release of pesticides and sustained pest control

Controlled-release systems are crucial for efficient pesticide utilization and environmental protection in agricultural production. The utilization of polysaccharide-based materials derived from biopolymers as carriers for controlling pesticide release holds significant potential. In this work, a reversible near infrared-responsive polysaccharide-based hydrogel (RNPH) was fabricated by employing a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (alginate-FeIII/pluronic F127) as a carrier to encapsulate Fe3O4@polydopamine (FP) and emamectin benzoate (EB)-loaded hollow mesoporous silica. The incorporation of FP into the RNPH introduced a photothermal effect, enabling the precise release of EB through reversible shrinkage of the hydrogel upon NIR irradiation. Additionally, the presence of magnetic Fe3O4 in the system facilitated the rapid removal of remaining RNPH from the environment using a magnet, reducing EB residue. Importantly, RNPH exhibited exceptional controlled-release performance and could be reused for at least 4 cycles. Furthermore, the anti-photolysis ability of EB protected by RNPH was enhanced by 4.8 times compared to EB alone. Moreover, RNPH significantly improved the adhesion of EB to foliar surfaces, thereby reducing the loss of EB while ensuring crop safety. Therefore, the polysaccharide-based hydrogel holds promise as a versatile carrier for the precise release of EB, offering valuable applications in enhancing pesticide bioavailability and promoting environmental safety.

Corn starch nanocomposite films reinforced with nanocellulose

Abstract The need for flexible food packaging has increased substantially in recent years around the world due to the unprecedented growth in food consumption. Due to low cost and ease of processing, petroleum-based synthetic polymer packaging materials are being predominantly used for food packaging these days. To avoid contributing to environmental problems caused by ecological risks, consumers have been searching for alternatives to plastic food packaging due to the fact that plastics cannot be recycled and are not biodegradable. Therefore, bioplastics made from corn starch, which are biodegradable, can be one solution to these issues. The starch’s amylopectin and amylase composition has a significant impact on the polysaccharide’s characteristics. Corn starch (CS) is utilized as a food source for humans and other animals, but it also has many other applications in industry. Corn starch, on the other hand, has a few issues that need to be addressed through some modifications. Although starch-based packaging is expensive, they create less waste overall, which helps in the reduction amount of plastic pollution. A variety of natural and synthetic polymers – including polysaccharide-based materials like Kappaphycus alvarezii seaweed, collagen, alginate, chitosan, zein, cellulose, gelatin, various amino acids and polymeric materials like acrylic acid, polybutylene (PB), polyacrylic acid, polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and polycaprolactone (PCL) – are used as starch modifiers to produce polymers with a starch base that are completely biodegradable. These biopolymers have the potential to replacing petroleum-based polymers in a variety of commercial and industrial settings. Besides, corn starch nanocomposite films reinforced with nanocellulose have been investigated as a potential eco-friendly packaging material. Consequently, the effects of nanocellulose content on the mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties of corn starch-based films will be discussed in this work.

An eco-friendly photo-responsive hyaluronic acid-based supramolecular polysaccharide hybrid hydrogels for plant growth regulation and heavy metal ions adsorption

Agrochemicals are widely used in agricultural production, but they may cause agrochemicals residues and environmental pollution. Polysaccharide-based materials have emerged as a promising biopolymer carrier for agrochemicals delivery. Herein, an eco-friendly, photo-responsive supramolecular polysaccharide hybrid hydrogels (HA-AAP-Guano-CD@LP) was constructed from arylazopyrazole-modified hyaluronic acid (HA-AAP), guanidinium functionalized β-cyclodextrin (Guano-CD), and laponite clay (LP) via synergistic host-guest and electrostatic interactions, which could realize the controlled release of plant growth regulators such as naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and gibberellin (GA) and promote the growth of Chinese cabbage and alfalfa. More interestingly, after releasing the cargo, the hydrogels could be used to capture heavy metal ions via strong complexation between the ions and carboxyl groups. This polysaccharide-based supramolecular hybrid hydrogels may provide a new strategy to realize the precision agriculture by the controlled delivery of plant growth regulators and synergetic adsorption of pollutants.

Synthesis and Characterization of Multi-Reducing-End Polysaccharides.

Site-specific modification is a great challenge for polysaccharide scientists. Chemo- and regioselective modification of polysaccharide chains can provide many useful natural-based materials and help us illuminate fundamental structure-property relationships of polysaccharide derivatives. The hemiacetal reducing end of a polysaccharide is in equilibrium with its ring-opened aldehyde form, making it the most uniquely reactive site on the polysaccharide molecule, ideal for regioselective decoration such as imine formation. However, all natural polysaccharides, whether they are branched or not, have only one reducing end per chain, which means that only one aldehyde-reactive substituent can be added. We introduce a new approach to selective functionalization of polysaccharides as an entrée to useful materials, appending multiple reducing ends to each polysaccharide molecule. Herein, we reduce the approach to practice using amide formation. Amine groups on monosaccharides such as glucosamine or galactosamine can react with carboxyl groups of polysaccharides, whether natural uronic acids like alginates, or derivatives with carboxyl-containing substituents such as carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) or carboxymethyl dextran (CMD). Amide formation is assisted using the coupling agent 4-(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-4-methylmorpholinium chloride (DMTMM). By linking the C2 amines of monosaccharides to polysaccharides in this way, a new class of polysaccharide derivatives possessing many reducing ends can be obtained. We refer to this class of derivatives as multi-reducing-end polysaccharides (MREPs). This new family of derivatives creates the potential for designing polysaccharide-based materials with many potential applications, including in hydrogels, block copolymers, prodrugs, and as reactive intermediates for other derivatives.

Environmentally friendly strategy to access self-healable, reprocessable and recyclable chitin, chitosan, and sodium alginate based polysaccharide-vitrimer hybrid materials

Natural polysaccharides show enviable advantages for preparation of sustainable hybrid materials. However, in most cases, complex chemical modifications of natural polysaccharides are required, which not only causes changes of the inherent properties of polysaccharides, but also increases the manufacturing costs of the final materials. Therefore, it is highly desired to develop efficient and low-cost ways to access polysaccharides-containing hybrid materials. In this work, we report the environmentally friendly preparation of a new kind of polysaccharide-based materials, called polysaccharide-vitrimer hybrid materials, for the first time. The vitrimer synthesis and hybridization with polysaccharides can be achieved via a convenient one-pot method in absence of solvent and catalyst. In addition, time-consuming and labor-intensive physical/chemical modifications of natural polysaccharides are completely avoided. The resultant hybrid materials show good mechanical performance (tensile toughness is up to 13.7 MJ/m3), high thermal stability (Td,max is up to 457 °C), fast self-healing ability (self-healing efficiency is up to 99 % within 20s at 80 °C) and excellent reprocessability and recyclability (at least three cycles). Especially, conductive polysaccharide-vitrimer hybrid materials could be readily prepared from the resultant materials, exhibiting novel applications as flexible sensors and electromagnetic shielding materials (the EMI SE is up to 24.93 dB).

Feather-weight cryostructured thiourea-chitosan aerogels for highly efficient removal of heavy metal ions and bacterial pathogens

Designing of economically feasible and recyclable polysaccharide-based materials with thiourea functional groups for removal of specific metal ions such as Ag(I), Au(I), Pb(II) or Hg(II) remains a major challenge for environmental applications. Here, we introduce ultra-lightweight thiourea-chitosan (CSTU) aerogels engineered by combining successive freeze-thawing cycles with covalent formaldehyde-mediated cross-linking and lyophilization. All aerogels exhibited outstanding low densities (0.0021–0.0103 g/cm3) and remarkable high specific surface areas (416.64–447.26 m2/g), outperforming the common polysaccharide-based aerogels. Benefitting from their superior structural features (honeycomb interconnected pores and high porosity), CSTU aerogels demonstrate fast sorption rates and excellent performance in sorption of heavy metal ions from highly-concentrated single or binary-component mixtures (1.11 mmol Ag (I)/g and 0.48 mmol Pb(II)/g). A remarkable recycling stability was observed after five sorption-desorption-regeneration cycles when the removal efficiency was up to 80 %. These results support the high potential of CSTU aerogels in the treatment of metal-containing wastewater. Moreover, the Ag(I)-loaded CSTU aerogels exhibited excellent antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strains, the killing rate being around 100 %. This data points towards the potential application of developed aerogels in circular economy, by employing the spent Ag(I)-loaded aerogels in the biological decontamination of waters.

Construction of porous structure-based carboxymethyl chitosan/ sodium alginate/ tea polyphenols for wound dressing

Polysaccharide-based materials with porous structure were selected as the basic skeleton to prepare a flexible and biodegradable wound dressing. The carboxymethyl chitosan/sodium alginate/tea polyphenols (CC/SA/TP) with a two-layer porous structure exhibits a variety of performances. The specific combined structure with ordered and lamellar porous structure was constructed by high-speed homogenized foaming, Ca2+ crosslinking and two-step freeze-drying methods. Moreover, the CC/SA/TP porous structure owns better shape retention and recovery because of the 3D network with an “egg-box” structure formed by impregnation. Tea polyphenols are efficiently encapsulated into a porous structure and released in a sustained pattern. After storing for 60 days, the CC/SA/TP porous structure still exhibits great suitable water vapor transmittance, efficient antibacterial activity and ultrarapid antioxidant activity. Meanwhile, the relatively low differential blood clotting index (BCI) and cytotoxicity of the CC/SA/TP porous structure indicate that it possesses the possibility of adjusting and controlling wound bleeding. The test results reveal that the CC/SA/TP porous structure might be expected to play a great potential role in biomedical applications of wound dressing.

Polysaccharides for Biodegradable Packaging Materials: Past, Present, and Future (Brief Review).

The ecological problems emerging due to accumulation of non-biodegradable plastics are becoming more and more urgent. This problem can be solved by the development of biodegradable materials which will replace the non-biodegradable ones. Among numerous approaches in this field, there is one proposing the use of polysaccharide-based materials. These polymers are biodegradable, non-toxic, and obtained from renewable resources. This review opens discussion about the application of polysaccharides for the creation of biodegradable packaging materials. There are numerous investigations developing new formulations using cross-linking of polymers, mixing with inorganic (metals, metal oxides, clays) and organic (dyes, essential oils, extracts) compounds. The main emphasis in the present work is made on development of the polymer blends consisting of cellulose, starch, chitin, chitosan, pectin, alginate, carrageenan with some synthetic polymers, polymers of natural origin, and essential oils.

Synthesis and evaluation of water-soluble imidazolium salt chitin with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and excellent biocompatibility for infected wound healing

Infections caused by bacteria have long constituted a major threat to human health and the economy. Therefore, there is an urgent need to design broad-spectrum antibacterial materials possessing good biocompatibility to treat such infections. Herein, inspired by the good biocompatibility of chitin and antibacterial properties of imidazolium salts, a polysaccharide-based material, imidazolium salt chitin (IMSC), was homogeneously prepared using a facile method with epichlorohydrin as a chemical crosslinker to combine chitin with imidazole to enhance Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus)-infected wound healing. The characteristics, antimicrobial properties, and biosafety of IMSC were evaluated. The results demonstrated successful grafting of imidazole onto chitin. Furthermore, IMSC exhibited good water solubility, broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, hemocompatibility, and biocompatibility. Moreover, IMSC enabled complete healing of S. aureus-infected wound in Sprague–Dawley rats within 15 days of application, thus demonstrating that IMSC could reduce wound inflammation and remarkably accelerate wound healing owing to its efficient antibacterial activity and ability to promote collagen deposition in and around the wound area. Therefore, this study provides a promising and potential therapeutic strategy for infected wound healing by synthesizing a water-soluble and broad-spectrum antimicrobial material exhibiting good biocompatibility.
