Evaluation of cutoff characteristics in oscillating liquid crystal molecules under sinusoidal electric fields

Sinusoidal electric fields are applied to liquid crystals (LCs) across various frequencies ranging from 0.1 Hz to 10 kHz to investigate the oscillatory behavior of LC directors. In a 1.5 μm thick 5CB cell, a significant decline in refractive index change occurs in the frequency range greater than 10 Hz, in which the LC director cannot sufficiently follow the rapid fluctuations in field intensity. To evaluate the response speed of the LCs under sinusoidal electric fields, the cutoff frequency is introduced as a response indicator. Enhancement of the cutoff frequency can be achieved through conventional fast response techniques such as polymer-stabilized LCs.

Ultrasensitive Biomimetic Skin with Multimodal and Photoelectric Dual-Signal Sensing.

Mimicking biological skin enabling direct, intelligent interaction between users and devices, multimodal sensing with optical/electrical (OE) output signals is urgently required. Owing to this, this work aims to logically design a stretchable OE biomimetic skin (OE skin), which can sensitively sense complex external stimuli of pressure, strain, temperature, and localization. The OE skin consists of elastic thin polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal films, an ion-conductive hydrogel layer, and an elastic protective membrane formed with thin polydimethylsiloxane. The as-designed OE skin exhibits customizable structural color on demand, good thermochromism, and excellent mechanochromism, with the ability to extend the full visible spectrum, a good linearity of over 0.99, fast response speed of 93 ms, and wide temperature range of 119 °C. In addition, the conduction resistance variation of ion-conductive hydrogel exhibits excellent sensing capabilities under pressure, stretch, and temperature, endowing a good linearity of 0.99998 (stretching from 0 to 150%) and high thermal sensitivity of 0.86% per °C. Such an outstanding OE skin provides design concepts for the development of multifunctional biomimetic skin used in human-machine interaction and can find wide applications in intelligent wearable devices and human-machine interactions.

Doped nanofibers achieve tunable broadband in cholesteric phase liquid crystals

ABSTRACT In this study, polymer-stabilised cholesterol-based liquid crystal (PSLC) broadband reflective films were prepared by doping UV absorbers and chiral compounds in bilayer poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanofiber films. Broadband reflection was achieved by diffusion of the UV absorber and chiral compounds in the bilayer nanofibers into the liquid crystal layer, which resulted in the formation of an inhomogeneous pitch distribution in the liquid crystal layer. To attain an optimal reflective effect, various factors such as polymer monomer concentration, concentration of chiral compounds in the spun film, diffusion temperature, diffusion time, and intensity of polymerised light were investigated. The effects of these factors on the reflective bandwidth were explored. The method significantly broadened the reflective bandwidth of the cholesteric phase liquid crystal layer, establishing the foundation for studying the combination of nanofiber films with cholesteric phase liquid crystals to form an adjustable pitch.

Preparation of a double-layer liquid crystal optical shutter with fluorescent properties and its ultraviolet shielding screening properties

ABSTRACT Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films and polymer-stabilised cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLC) films have been widely applied in smart optoelectronics due to electrical switching properties. In this study, fluorescent dyes were introduced into PDLC films and combined with PSCLC films to invent a new type of optical shutter, and the optimal formulations of each of liquid crystal structural layers were investigated. Then, PDLC anti-counterfeit optical device doped with fluorescent materials were fabricated by UV curing method using polymerisation-induced phase separation. The novel optical shutter could be driven layer by layer at room temperature according to different voltages to realise the switching of three states, namely, off state, PDLC layer-driven, and full-driven (open state). Samples under optimal conditions showed that the new optical shutter could achieve 96.5% UV shielding in the off state and had a long lifetime. The results demonstrate the attractive potential of the new optical shutter for optoelectronic devices and smart curtain applications.

A novel double-layer liquid crystal electro-optic switch and its infrared shielding properties investigation

ABSTRACT In this study, a novel light switch was developed by integrating polymer dispersion liquid crystals (PDLC) and polymer-stabilised cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLC), leveraging the infrared shielding properties of these two liquid crystal films. The optimal formulation for each layer of the liquid crystal structure was investigated. Subsequently, the effects of light intensity, high temperature, and humidity on the performance of the light switch were examined. This new light switch can be selectively driven layer by layer at room temperature, achieving three states: the off state, PDLC layer-driven state, and full-driven (on state). This functionality serves the purpose of electrogenerated temperature control. Samples under optimal conditions exhibited a 31% enhancement in infrared shielding compared to a single-layer PDLC film. Moreover, the IR shielding rate could be adjusted according to the voltage applied, realising an intelligent temperature-control effect. The results of this study suggest that such bilayer liquid crystal structures hold significant potential for application in electro-optical devices and smart curtain systems.

Low-voltage electrochromic behaviour of polymer-stabilised liquid crystal with considerable broadband reflection

ABSTRACT In this work, a novel method was proposed to achieve electric-induced colouration of polymer-stabilised liquid crystal (PSLC) with considerable broadband reflection. The formation of broadband reflection was due to the introduction of the UV absorber that induced a light intensity gradient within the liquid crystal system and promoted the non-uniform distribution of the pitch. Experiments were performed to optimise the components and polymerisation conditions, allowing the bandwidth to be broadened from 252 nm to 906 nm. The texture of PSLC was characterised using POM, revealing that the planar texture was not disrupted. Thereafter, the addition of ionic liquid as supporting electrolyte enabled the PSLC to be switched from colourless to coloured at DC voltage as low as 1.7 V and the colouration behaviour can be independently modulated by changing the voltage level and the duration. Meaningfully, after the DC electric field was removed, the colour of the PSLC can also disappear gradually. In addition, the as-prepared electrochromic PSLC presented enhanced UV shielding, IR thermal control efficacy and good colouration performance on flexible substrates, which can be applied to low-energy smart glass and thermal management of buildings. This study provided a promising approach for the development of smart optical devices.

Colorful multi-plane augmented reality display with dynamically tunable reflective Pancharatnam-Berry phase lens.

Reflective cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) Pancharatnam-Berry phase lens (PBL) devices have attracted significant attention in augmented reality (AR) display due to their wide spectral and angular response bandwidths, high diffraction efficiency, and polarization selectivity. However, currently reported CLC reflective PBLs are either limited by monochrome display or suffers from complicated design for colorful display. Herein, we demonstrate a colorful multi-plane AR display system with dynamically tunable reflective PBL. The reflective PBL is fabricated by polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal (PSCLC) that provides dynamical and continuous tunability of color and focal length by direct current (DC) voltage. A proof-of-concept colorful multi-plane AR device is demonstrated, where over 90% diffraction efficiency at desired wavelength has been obtained. The proposed simple, compact, and light AR display system capable of color-imaging with multi-depth shows great application potential in the vehicle-mounted head-up display (HUD).

Surface induced effects on the dielectric and optical properties of polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal composites

Polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal is one of the most coveted systems in the ever-expanding field of liquid crystal due to its wider potential application in smart windows, optical shutters, tunable lenses, etc. The dispersion of polymer into liquid crystal by introducing a small amount of chiral dopant prepared polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal. In this work, two samples of polymer- cholesteric liquid crystal were prepared. Surface treatment is applied on one composite while another sample is prepared without any treatment on the indium tin-oxide coated glass substrates. Frequency and temperature-dependent dielectric parameters are observed for both samples. The dielectric studies revealed that after surface treatment, the permittivity of the sample significantly increased. AC conductivity of the sample also increased. The photoluminescence spectra also show improvement in the intensity with the surface-treated sample.

Enhanced broadband reflection properties of PSCLCs films supported by electrospun nanofiber networks loaded with Cs0.33WO3 nanoparticles

ABSTRACT The introduction of nanoparticles into cholesteric liquid crystals has long provided inspiration for innovative device materials. A novel material design strategy was demonstrated to achieve a broadband reflection of polymer-stabilised cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLCs) based on Cs0.33WO3 nanoparticles and the polymer nanonetworks in the PSCLCs. Through the adjustment of nanoparticle and chiral dopant (C6M) concentrations and meticulous control of polymerisation conditions, an appropriate pitch gradient distribution was achieved in the polymer-stabilised cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLCs). This was attained by striking a delicate balance between the polymerisation speed and chiral dopant diffusion rate, resulting in optimal PSCLCs optical properties. Modification of Cs0.33WO3 nanoparticles by oleic acid was successfully accomplished as confirmed by IR spectroscopy. SEM and EDS analyses further demonstrated the distribution of nanoparticles in the spun fibre film. Moreover, POM observations showed that liquid crystals with nanofiber networks maintained the planar texture and temperature stability. The prepared broadband reflective film opens an avenue towards developing the reflection bandwidth in the PSCLCs, essential for intelligent windows and infrared shielding devices.

Low driving voltage reverse-mode polymer-stabilised cholesteric liquid crystal devices using small phenylacetylene molecule

ABSTRACT Polymer-stabilised liquid crystal devices have found widespread use in intelligent displays and dimming glass applications, but their high driving voltage induces high power consumption and needs to be reduced. In this paper, we use several small phenylacetylene molecule materials with linear structures to reduce the driving voltage and obtain a high contrast ratio in reverse-mode polymer-stabilised cholesteric liquid crystals (RPSCLC). In particular, the drive voltage of the 8-micron-thick sample was reduced by nearly 40%, and the 20-micron-thick sample was reduced by nearly 45%. Additionally, we explore the physical mechanism through which various small phenylacetylene molecule materials improve the electro-optical properties, based on polymer network morphology effects. The results will be of great value for enhancing the use of RPSCLC devices.

Polymerisation of twist-bend nematic textures for electro-optical applications.

Polymer-stabilised liquid crystals (PSLCs) have recently been used to maintain the focal conic domains (FCDs) typical of the smectic A phase in the nematic phase for smart window applications. The newly discovered twist-bend nematic phase of bent-shaped dimers also exhibits FCDs due to its pseudo-layered structure. The variety of topological defects in the NTB phase is arguably even greater than in the smectic A phase, but the NTB phase is often metastable and usually crystallises at room temperature, which hinders its use in electro-optical applications. Here we show how different textures (FCDs, rope-like texture, double helices) of the NTB phase can be polymerised and then maintained in the nematic phase, at room temperature. This allows us to combine in PSLCs the optical properties of these defects, the thermal stability of the nematic phase and its reversible response to an electric field. We also show that the polymerised FCDs of the NTB phase could be used in smart glass applications and that the polymerised rope-like texture could be of interest for optical modulators and beam steering. In addition, the polymerisation of double helices could help to better understand their formation and structure in the NTB phase. More fundamentally, our work shows that despite the lack of density modulation, the textures of the NTB phase, thanks to its periodic character, can be exploited in the same way as those of the smectic A phase.

ABSTRACT Double-layered polymer-stabilised cholesteric liquid crystal (PSCLC) films constructed from epoxy resin and polyacrylate were prepared based on photopolymerisation-induced phase separation. Moreover, a PSCLC film with an interpenetrating network was prepared through a one-step photopolymerisation approach. A colourful pattern was prepared based on these two approaches, which was suitably applied for decoration.

Programmable Dynamic Information Storage Composite Film with Highly Sensitive Thermochromism and Gradually Adjustable Fluorescence.

The development of an integrated material system capable of effectively organizing and combining multisource information, such as dynamic pigmentary, structural, and fluorescent colors, is significant and challenging. Achieving such programmable dynamic information storage can considerably enhance the diversity and security of information deliveries. Here, a polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal system with highly temperature-sensitive structural color and light-sensitive pigmentary and fluorescence colors is presented. The prepared cholesteric liquid crystals (clcs) can reversibly change their structural color from red to blue within variational 3°C near room temperature, and exhibit a gradually adjustable fluorescence which can transform from blue to pink and finally to bright red. All this dynamic information is programmable and tailored, hundreds of thousands of (>540000) pattern combinations can easily be achieved by optical writing with a "bagua" pattern photomask. Therefore, if the corresponding code combinations to the pattern are assigned particular meanings, encrypted transmission of information with very high security can be achieved by utilizing applicable information encoding tables and decryption rules.

Broad-wave reflection of polymer-stabilised cholesterol liquid crystal with nanofibers doped magnetic nanoparticles

ABSTRACT In this study, the polymer-stabilised cholesterol-based liquid crystal (PSCLC) films with broad-wave reflection were prepared via PVA nanofibers as carriers loaded with Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Fe3O4 nanoparticles have absorption properties in the UV region. When UV light is irradiated along the thickness of the liquid crystal cell, the resulting gradient distribution of UV light intensity induces a gradient distribution of spacing and thus a broad-wave reflection. Specifically, the effects of nanoparticles content loaded in nanofibers, magnetic field strength, polymerisation time and temperature, UV light intensity and polymerised monomer content were studied. The result shows that the proper contents of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and the polymerisation conditions have favourable impacts on the broad-wave reflection of PSCLC films. To clarify the mechanism of formed broad-wave reflection, the morphology of nanofibers was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The modification of nanoparticles was collected by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and infrared spectroscopy. The texture of PSCLC films was observed by POM. The broad-wave reflection were measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometer. This strategy broadens the broad-wave reflection of PSCLC films from 300 nm to 476 nm increasing its application potential in UV shielding devices, and infrared thermal control devices.

Study on the Effect of Monoacrylic Monomers on the Polymer Network Morphology and Electro-Optical Performance of Reverse-Mode Polymer Stabilized Liquid Crystal Devices

A polymer-stabilized liquid crystal (PSLC) device has been a promising candidate in several scenarios like smart vehicle windows and glass curtain walls in recent years due to its remarkable features like a fast switch from the initial transparent state to the scattering state with a rather low driving voltage, high transmittance at off-state, and broad viewing angle. The electro-optical characteristics of PSLC devices are determined by the synergistic attributions of liquid crystal (LC) molecules and the influence of the polymer network exerted on the movement of LC molecules. A systematic study of the influence of the polymer network on the movement of LC molecules is conducted, with the polymer network formed by methoxy/cyano/carboxyl monomers and diacrylate C6M. The polymer network morphology of PSLC film is greatly affected by the molecular structures and content of monoacrylic monomers. Additionally, the electro-optical performance and peel strength of PSLC films could be improved by modulating the molecular structures and morphology of polymer networks. PSLC devices containing carboxyl monomers show enhanced electro-optical performance and peel strength due to their directional filiform topology. This study might provide guidance for optimizing the performance of PSLC devices and establishing the relationship between the molecular structure, polymer network morphology, and electro-optical performance of reverse-mode dimming films.

Preparation of the colorful retroreflective film based on the polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal

A cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) mixture was prepared using a photoisomerizable chiral dopant and acrylates. With extending the irradiation time of a 365-nm UV light, the Bragg reflection band of the CLC mixture shifted to long wavelength. After photopolymerization, a polymer-stabilized CLC (PSCLC) film was obtained. The colorful PSCLC patterns with glass microspheres on the surface were prepared by controlling the competition between the photoisomerization of the chiral dopant and the photopolymerization of the acrylates. Due to the retroreflective property, the patterned PSCLC films can be applied as the traffic signs and for advertisement.

Unique Polymer-Stabilized Liquid Crystal Structure Prepared by Addition of a Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Agent.

Polymer-stabilized liquid crystals (PSLCs) are important electrically switchable materials due to their superior electro-optical properties. Nevertheless, it remains a formidable challenge to balance PSLCs' instant electro-optical performance and long-term durability due to their relatively low polymer content and the related sensitivity to external force. Herein, we demonstrate the possibility of regulating the polymer network structure in PSLCs via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization reactions of acrylate monomers with a chain transfer agent (CTA). By controlling the concentration of CTA and conditions of photopolymerization, the kinetics of the polymerization reaction can be modified. Compared to conventional free-radical (FR) polymerization, the reduced chain growth rate leads to sufficient chain relaxation, reorientation of liquid crystal (LC) directors, and alleviation of shrinkage stresses in the RAFT polymerization process. This in turn produces an ordered polymer network structure in the vertical direction and a uniform distribution in the horizontal plane. As a result, the PSLC network presents increased elasticity with a lower hysteresis effect and greatly improved durability. Our research offers insightful guidance for the fine-tuning of polymer network structures to prepare advanced LC/polymer composite structures with outstanding performances.

Multilayer, Broadband Infrared Reflectors Based on the Photoinduced Preparation of Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Polymers.

This paper focuses on preparing broadband reflective liquid crystal films through the diffusion of monofunctional and bifunctional monomers in a photoinduced trilayer system. By combining the hydrophilic and hydrophobic liquid crystal glass surface treatment technologies, the polymer network of polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal (PSCLC) itself serves as a diffusion channel to form a trilayer cholesteric liquid crystal composite system containing bifunctional monomers, a nematic liquid crystal composite system, and a cholesteric liquid crystal composite system containing monofunctional monomers. Utilizing the difference in the polymerization rates of monofunctional and difunctional polymerizable monomers, the monomers and chiral compounds diffuse relative to each other, so that the liquid crystal pitch exhibits a gradient distribution, and the broadened reflective width can reach up to 1570 nm. There is no doubt that new and improved processes and technologies offer important possibilities for preparing and applying PSCLC films.
