Preparation of polyglycidyl methacrylate microspheres and nanocomposite hydrogels crosslinked by hydrogen bonds

In order to meet the application of the flexible wings of the submersible, nanocomposite hydrogels(NC gels) was prepared. Preparation of polyglycidyl methacrylate (PGMA) microspheres and correspondingly NC gels were reported. PGMA microspheres were prepared and modified by N-Methyl-D-glucamine, followed by free radical polymerization of acrylamide in the presence of microspheres to construct nanocomposite hydrogel. FT-IR, XPS and DLS verified a successful introduction of hydroxyl groups during modification. The effects of the particle size and content of the microspheres on the swelling properties of the composite hydrogels were investigated. Hydrogen bonds between hydroxyl groups and polyacrylamide molecular chains play important roles to the swelling property of NC gels. The intermolecular interaction and the crosslinking density were enhanced by the hydrogen bonds, and resultantly, swelling ratio of NC gels decreases.

In Situ Synthesis of Monodisperse Silver Nanoparticles on Sulfhydryl-Functionalized Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) Microspheres for Catalytic Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol

Immobilization of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) to improve monodispersity and recyclability is crucial for applications in nanocatalysts. Herein, a novel protocol for stabilizer-free, effective, and in situ synthesis of Ag NPs on sulfhydryl-functionalized poly(glycidyl methacrylate) microspheres (PGMA-SH) was proposed. Ag NPs of 16.97 ± 3.15 nm were successfully grown on PGMA-SH, and remained monodisperse and stable even after sonication, washing, and long-term storage. Moreover, the Ag NPs on PGMA-SH (Ag NPs@PGMA-SH) composite exhibited excellent catalytic activity with an average normalized activity parameter of 4.38 × 10–3 L·mg–1·s–1 toward the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, which was 1.3–132 times higher than reported in literature. Amine‐Functionalized Polyglycidyl Methacrylate Microsphere as a Unified Template for the Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles and Single‐Crystal Gold Plates

Polyglycidyl methacrylate (PGMA) microspheres, crosslinked and surface-functionalized by amine, can be used as a solid-state template for the synthesis of gold (Au) crystals in the forms of either nanoparticles (NPs) or plates. It is discovered that the polymer microsphere acts as an internal template to cultivate Au NPs inside the microsphere or an external template to generate the single-crystal plates depending on the critical concentration (Ccr ) of gold ions. The ion-dipole interaction and the structure-dependent solubility of gold induce two distinct gold nanostructures in the presence of the functionalized polymer microspheres. The catalytic activity and long-term storage of the developed gold nanostructures that can be easily scaled-up for mass production through the developed novel methodology is demonstrated.

Covalently coating dextran on macroporous polyglycidyl methacrylate microsphere enabled rapid protein chromatographic separation

Protein denaturation and nonspecific adsorption on polymer media as a chromatographic support have been a problem which needs to be overcome. Macroporous poly(glycidyl methacrylate–divinylbezene) (PGMA–DVB) microspheres prepared in this study were firstly covalently coated with dextran through a three-step method. The dextran was firstly adsorbed onto the microspheres and then covalently bound to the PGMA–DVB microsphere through ether bonds which were formed by hydroxyl group reacting with epoxy group at the presence of 4-(Dimethylamino) pyridine. Finally, the coating dextran layer was crosslinked by ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether to form the continuous network coating. The coated microspheres were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, scanning electron microscope, mercury porosimetry measurements, laser scanning confocal microscope, and protein adsorption experiments. Results showed that PGMA–DVB microspheres coated with dextran successfully maintained the macroporous structure and high permeability. The backpressure was only 1.69MPa at a high flow rate of 2891cm/h. Consequently, the hydrophilicity and biocompatibility of modified microspheres were greatly improved, and the contact angle decreased from 184° to 13°, and nonspecific adsorption of proteins was decreased to little or none. The clad dextran coating with large amounts of hydroxyl group was easily derived to be various functional groups. The derived media have great potential applications in rapid protein chromatography.

Preparation of Magnetic Polyglycidyl Methacrylate Microspheres

We present an approach of synthesizing magnetic polyglycidyl methacrylate (PGMA) microspheres by a simple method of dispersion polymerization. Water-based Magnetic fluids which have different surface properties disperse in reaction system. The magnetic microspheres are appropriate to construct liquid chip carriers. In this work, citric acid-modified and citric acid sodium-modified magnetic nanoparticles for the preparation of magnetic microspheres are investigated. SEM results indicated that the magnetic microspheres have an average diameter of 3.78 μm with excellent monodispersity (PDI 1.09). Magnetization curve of Fe3O4 nanoparticles using superconducting quantum magnetometer showed their good performance in magnetic response characteristics. Chemical structures and crystal form of magnetic Fe3O4 were characterized and analyzed using FT-IR and XRD methods.

Synthesis of PGMA Microspheres with Amino Groups for High-capacity Adsorption of Cr(VI) by Cerium Initiated Graft Polymerization

A novel polyglycidylmethacrylate (PGMA) microspheres with high adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) was prepared by cerium(IV) initiated graft polymerization of tentacle-type polymer chains with amino group on polymer microspheres with hydroxyl groups. The micron-sized PGMA microspheres were prepared by a dispersion polymerization method and subsequently modified by ring-opening reaction to introduce functional hydroxyl groups. The polymer microspheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results indicated that the polymer microspheres had an average diameter of 5 ìm with uniform size distribution. The free amino group content was determined to be 5.13 mmol·g−1 for g-PGMA-NH2 microspheres by potentiometric and conductometric titration methods. The Cr(VI) adsorption results indicated that the graft polymerization of tentacle-type polymer chains on the polymer microspheres could produce adsorbents with high adsorption capacity (500 mg·g−1). The polymer microspheres with grafted tentacle polymer chains have potential application in large-scale removal of Cr(VI) in aqueous solution.

Magnetic polyglycidylmethacrylate microspheres by dispersion polymerization

AbstractComposite polyglycidylmethacrylate [poly(GMA)] spherical microparticles capable of responding to magnetic fields were prepared by dispersion polymerization of GMA in the presence of iron oxides. The polymerization reaction was carried out in aqueous alcoholic media (methanol, ethanol, propan‐1‐ol, and butan‐1‐ol) using poly‐(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) and 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile as a steric stabilizer and initiator, respectively. Quaternary ammonium salt (Aliquat 336) acting as an electrostatic costabilizer favorably affected dispersity. The solubility parameter of the reaction mixture determined the size of the resulting microspheres. In addition to the particle size distribution, the addition of iron oxide to the polymerization medium also caused a shift of the particle size to higher values.
