Green method for 17-hydroxyprogesterone extraction and determination using PDMS stir bar sorptive extraction coupled with HPLC: optimization by response surface methodology

Quantifying small amounts of the 17-hydroxyprogesterone in various matrix is crucial for different purposes. In this study, a commercial polydimethylsiloxane stir bar was used to extract hormone from water and urine samples. Analysis was performed by high-performance liquid chromatography using a UV detector. The response surface methodology was used to optimize the desorption and extraction steps, with predicted optimal point relative errors of 1.25% and 6.40%, respectively. The optimized method was validated with a linear range of 1.21–1000.00 for aqueous and 2.43–2000.00 ng mL–1 for urine samples. The coefficient of determination was 0.9998 and 0.9967, and the detection limit of the proposed method was obtained to be 0.40 and 0.80 ng mL–1 for aqueous and urine samples, respectively. The recovery percentage and relative standard deviation within a day and between three days after the addition of three different concentration levels of the standard to the control sample were 87–103% and 0.4–3.6% for aqueous and 87.5–101% and 0.1–5.2% for urine samples, respectively. The results show that the proposed method can be appropriate and cost-effective for extracting and analyzing this hormone. In addition, using three different tools, the greenness of the proposed method was proven.

Fractionated stir bar sorptive extraction using conventional and solvent-assisted approaches for enhanced identification capabilities of aroma compounds in beverages.

For successful profiling of aroma carriers in food samples, a highly efficient extraction method is mandatory. A two-step stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) approach, namely fractionated SBSE (Fr-SBSE), was developed to improve both the organoleptic and the chemical identification of aroma compounds in beverages. Fr-SBSE consists of two multi-SBSE procedures (mSBSE) performed sequentially on the same sample. The first extraction consists of a conventional mSBSE using three polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stir bars (1stmSBSE). This is followed by a solvent-assisted mSBSE performed on the same sample using three solvent-swollen PDMS stir bars (2nd SA-mSBSE). The 1stmSBSE mainly extracts apolar/medium polar solutes with log Kow values >2, while the 2nd SA-mSBSE mainly extracts polar solutes with log Kow values <2. After this two-step fractionation procedure, either thermal desorption (TD) or liquid desorption - large volume injection (LD-LVI), followed by GC-MS is performed on each set of three stir bars. A real-life sample of roasted green tea was used for method development. The performance of the Fr-SBSE method is further illustrated with sensory evaluations and GC-MS analysis for a stout beer sample. Compared to an extraction procedure with SA-mSBSE only, Fr-SBSE including a 1stmSBSE and a 2nd SA-mSBSE reduced co-elution of aroma compounds in the chromatograms and was capable of providing improved mass spectral quality for identification of 17 additional compounds in roasted green tea, and 12 additional compounds in stout beer, respectively. Moreover, odor description and characterization were clearly improved.

Headspace sorptive extraction coupled to gas chromatography–mass spectrometry for the determination of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes in finger paints

The presence of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) in dyes, paints and pigments is not still regulated but might be an indicator of contamination due to the well-known health risk of these compounds. An analytical procedure based on headspace sorptive extraction using a polydimethylsiloxane stir bar, was developed for the gas chromatographic determination of BTEX in finger paint samples. Univariate and multivariate designs were used to optimize experimental parameters, including equilibrium time, desorption time, saline effect and sample mass. Thirty minutes were necessary to absorb the analytes in the polydimethylsiloxane stir bar followed by a 5 min thermal desorption step. Limits of quantification of between 0.036 and 0.12 ng g−1 depending on the compound, were obtained. BTEX were found in the finger paint samples at levels between 0.14 and 12 ng g−1.

HS-GC–MS volatile compounds recovered in freshly pressed ‘Wonderful’ cultivar and commercial pomegranate juices

Consumption and production of superfruits has been increasing. Highly colored fruits often have bitter and astringent components that may make them undesirable, especially when processed. Many pomegranate volatile reports involved commercial samples, complicated isolation methods, or blending and concentrating that were from arils only, cultivars other than ‘Wonderful’, or mixed cultivars. Solid phase microextraction (SPME), polydimethylsiloxane stir bar sorptive extraction, and Tenax adsorption were performed with freshly pressed ‘Wonderful’ juices, commercial juices and concentrates. Using SPME, 36 compounds were isolated in whole pressed ‘Wonderful’ juices, including 18 of the 21 consensus compounds. In arils-only juices, 41 compounds were isolated by SPME, including 17 of the consensus volatiles. Dramatic variation existed in volatiles recovered in commercial juices and isolation of consensus compounds was sporadic. This article and summary of the literature serves to possibly deliver an improved volatile data set via a rapid method for fresh and partially processed (pressed) pomegranates.

Headspace stir bar sorptive extraction followed by thermal desorption and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry to determine musk fragrances in sludge samples without sample pretreatment

A direct, simple and solvent-free method based on headspace stir bar sorptive extraction and thermal desorption gas chromatography with mass spectroscopy was developed to determine 13 musk fragrances (six polycyclic musks, three nitro musks and four macrocyclic musks) in sludge without sample treatment. The optimal headspace stir bar sorptive extraction conditions were achieved when a polydimethylsiloxane stir bar was exposed for 45 min in the headspace of a 10 mL vial filled with 100 mg of sludge mixed with 0.2 mL of water stirred at 750 rpm at 80°C. The stir bar was then desorbed in the thermal desorption gas chromatography and mass spectrometry system, obtaining limits of detection between 5 and 30 ng/g. The method applicability was tested with sewage sludge from two urban wastewater treatment plants and from a potable water treatment plant. Results showed galaxolide and tonalide to be the most abundant musk fragrances found in wastewater treatment plants with maximal concentrations of 9240 and 7500 ng/g, respectively. Maximum concentration levels between 35 and 635 ng/g were found for musk ketone, musk moskene, traseolide, phantolide and celestolide in this kind of samples. Concentrations below the limits of quantitation of phantolide, galaxolide, tonalide and musk ketone were found in sludge from a potable water treatment plant.

Headspace sorptive extraction for the detection of combustion accelerants in fire debris

A novel method for separation and identification of ignitable liquid residues in fire debris by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry is presented. Preconcentration of the analytes was carried out using the simple headspace sorptive extraction (HSSE) technique. Polydimethylsiloxane stir bars were used as the enrichment phase, and parameters affecting both the adsorption and desorption stages were carefully optimized. Extraction was carried out at 50°C for 1h. Stir bars were desorbed thermally in the GC injection port, thus avoiding the use of organic solvents. The results for five ignitable liquids, including gasoline and diesel fuel, using HSSE were compared with those obtained with a solid-phase microextraction method, with HSSE appearing as a more sensitive alternative.

Multi-stir bar sorptive extraction for analysis of odor compounds in aqueous samples

As reproducible coating of stir bars with more polar phases was found to be very difficult, a supporting grid was used in the development of an ethyleneglycol-modified Silicone (EG Silicone) coated stir bar. This new polar coating showed good performance for the extraction of polar solutes, but long term use also showed degradation of the coating due to friction while stirring. In order to address the lower robustness of the EG Silicone stir bar which has a much softer coating compared to a conventional polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stir bar, a novel SBSE procedure termed multi-SBSE (mSBSE) was developed. mSBSE consists of the robust PDMS stir bar stirring at the bottom of the vial and the EG Silicone stir bar attached on the inner side wall of the vial (a magnetic clip is used for the set-up). After extraction, the two stir bars are placed in a single glass desorption liner and are simultaneously thermally desorbed. The desorbed compounds were analyzed by thermal desorption–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (TD–GC–MS). Compared to conventional SBSE, mSBSE provides more uniform enrichment of a wide range of odor compounds in aqueous sample since both stir bars can complement each other, while eliminating the damage of the EG Silicone phase during the extraction. The robustness of the EG Silicone stir bar was dramatically increased and more than 30 extraction and desorption cycles were possible without loss in performance. The recoveries for polar solutes such as 2-acetyl pyrrole (logKow: 0.55), benzyl alcohol (logKow: 1.08), guaiacol (logKow: 1.34), and indole (logKow: 2.05) were increased by a factor of about 2–7. The mSBSE–TD–GC–MS method showed good linearity (r2>0.9913) and high sensitivity (limit of detection: 0.011–0.071ngmL−1) for the test compounds spiked in water. The feasibility and benefit of the method was demonstrated with analysis of odor compounds in roasted green tea. The normalized areas obtained from mSBSE showed the best enrichment for most of the selected compounds compared to conventional SBSE using the PDMS stir bar or the EG Silicone stir bar. Fifteen compounds were determined in the range of 0.15–210ngmL−1 (RSD<14%, n=6).

Development of a sensitive determination method for benzotriazole UV stabilizers in enviromental water samples with stir bar sorption extraction and liquid desorption prior to ultra‐high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry

Benzotriazole UV stabilizers are emerging compounds used in personal care products and can enter surface water after passing through wastewater treatment plants without being removed. Because these analytes are strongly hydrophobic, there is an environmental risk of accumulation in solid matrices and magnification through the trophic chain. In this work, a method based on stir bar sorption extraction with liquid desorption is presented for the extraction of benzotriazole UV stabilizers from water samples. Stir bar sorptive extraction was combined with ultra-high performance LC with MS/MS detection. All important factors affecting the stir bar sorptive extraction procedure are discussed, and the optimized method was applied to seawater and wastewater samples from Gran Canaria Island, providing good selectivity and sensitivity with LODs and limits of quantification in the range of 18.4-55.1 and 61.5-184 ng/L, respectively. Recoveries between 68.4-92.2% were achieved for the more polar compounds, whereas the recoveries were lower for the two less polar compounds, most likely due to their strong absorption into the polydimethylsiloxane stir bar phase that does not allows the complete desorption. The repeatability studies gave RSDs of between 6.45 and 12.6% for all compounds in the real samples.

Preparation of a polar monolithic stir bar based on methacrylic acid and divinylbenzene for the sorptive extraction of polar pharmaceuticals from complex water samples

A monolithic, hydrophilic stir bar coating based upon a copolymer of methacrylic acid and divinylbenzene [poly(MAA-co-DVB)] was synthesised and evaluated as a new polymeric phase for the stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) of polar compounds from complex environmental water samples. The experimental conditions for the extraction and liquid desorption in SBSE were optimised. Liquid chromatography–triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) was used for the determination of a group of polar pharmaceuticals in environmental water matrices. The extraction performance of the poly(MAA-co-DVB) stir bar was compared to the extraction performance of a commercially available polydimethylsiloxane stir bar; it was found that the former gave rise to significantly higher extraction efficiency of polar analytes (% recovery values near to 100% for most of the studied analytes) than the commercial product. The developed method was applied to determine the studied analytes at low ngL−1 in different complex environmental water samples.

Determination of parabens in house dust by pressurised hot water extraction followed by stir bar sorptive extraction and thermal desorption–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry

This study describes the development of a new method for determining p-hydroxybenzoic esters (parabens) in house dust. This optimised method was based on the pressurised hot water extraction (PHWE) of house dust, followed by the acetylation of the extracted parabens, stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) with a polydimethylsiloxane stir bar, and finally analysis using thermal desorption–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (TD–GC–MS). The combination of SBSE and PHWE allows the analytes to be preconcentrated and extracted from the aqueous extract in a single step with minimal manipulation of the sample. Furthermore the in situ acetylation of parabens prior to SBSE improved their extraction efficiency and their GC–MS signal. The method showed recoveries of between 40 and 80%, good linearity, repeatability and reproducibility (<10% RSD, at 100 ng g −1, n = 5), low limits of detection (from 1.0 ng g −1 for propyl paraben to 2.1 ng g −1 for methyl paraben) and quantification (from 3.3 ng g −1 for propyl paraben to 8.5 ng g −1 for methyl paraben). The proposed method was applied to the analysis of house dust samples. All the target parabens were found in the samples. Methyl and propyl parabens were the most abundant, with concentrations up to 2440 ng g −1 and 910 ng g −1, respectively. The high levels of parabens found in the samples confirm the importance of determining organic contaminants in indoor environments.

Stir bar sorptive extraction of diclofenac from liquid formulations: A proof of concept study

A new stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) technique coupled with HPLC-UV method for quantification of diclofenac in pharmaceutical formulations has been developed and validated as a proof of concept study. Commercially available polydimethylsiloxane stir bars (Twister™) were used for method development and SBSE extraction (pH, phase ratio, stirring speed, temperature, ionic strength and time) and liquid desorption (solvents, desorption method, stirring time etc) procedures were optimised. The method was validated as per ICH guidelines and was successfully applied for the estimation of diclofenac from three liquid formulations viz. Voltarol® Optha single dose eye drops, Voltarol® Ophtha multidose eye drops and Voltarol® ampoules. The developed method was found to be linear (r=0.9999) over 100–2000ng/ml concentration range with acceptable accuracy and precision (tested over three QC concentrations). The SBSE extraction recovery of the diclofenac was found to be 70% and the LOD and LOQ of the validated method were found to be 16.06 and 48.68ng/ml, respectively. Furthermore, a forced degradation study of a diclofenac formulation leading to the formation of structurally similar cyclic impurity (indolinone) was carried out. The developed extraction method showed comparable results to that of the reference method, i.e. method was capable of selectively extracting the indolinone and diclofenac from the liquid matrix. Data on inter and intra stir bar accuracy and precision further confirmed robustness of the method, supporting the multiple re-use of the stir bars.

Quantitative determination of triclocarban in wastewater effluent by stir bar sorptive extraction and liquid desorption–liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry

Triclocarban is an antimicrobial and antibacterial agent found in personal care products and subsequently is a prevalent wastewater contaminant. A quantitative method was developed for the analysis of triclocarban in wastewater effluents using stir bar sorptive extraction–liquid desorption (SBSE–LD) followed by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) by means of an electrospray interface. A stir bar coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is placed within a vial containing wastewater effluent and is stirred for an hour at room temperature. The PDMS stir bar is then placed in a LC vial containing methanol and is desorbed in a sonicator bath. The methanol is evaporated to dryness and reconstituted in 75% methanol. Spike and recovery experiments in groundwater that did not contain native concentrations of triclocarban were performed at 0.5 μg/L and were 93 ± 8%. Recoveries in wastewater effluent that were corrected for the background levels of triclocarban were 92 ± 2% and 96 ± 5%, respectively, when spiked with 0.5 and 5 μg/L of triclocarban. The precision of the method as indicated by the relative standard error was 2%. The limit of quantitation was 10 ng/L. The SBSE–LD–LC/MS/MS method was applied to wastewater effluent samples collected from northeast Ohio. Triclocarban was quantitated in all five effluent samples, and its concentration ranged from 50 to 330 ng/L. The described method demonstrates a simple, green, low-sample volume, yet, sensitive method to measure triclocarban in aqueous matrices.

Determination of urinary triclosan by stir bar sorptive extraction and thermal desorption–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry

We have developed an analytical method for the determination of urinary 5-chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenol (triclosan), which utilizes stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) and thermal desorption (TD)–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Human urine sample is de-conjugated by treatment with β-glucuronidase and sulfatase. A stir bar coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is added to the urine sample in a vial and the sample is stirred for 60 min at room temperature (25 °C). Then, the PDMS stir bar is subjected to TD–GC–MS. The detection limit of triclosan is 0.05 ng mL −1. The method shows linearity over the calibration range (0.1–10 ng mL −1) and the correlation coefficient ( r) is higher than 0.993 for triclosan standard solution. The average recoveries of triclosan in human urine sample are 102.8–113.1% (RSD: 2.4–6.7%). This simple, sensitive, and selective analytical method may be used in the determination of trace amounts of triclosan in human urine samples.

Stir bar sorptive extraction and thermal desorption–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry for trace analysis of triclosan in water sample

A simple and highly sensitive method called stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) and thermal desorption (TD)-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), which is used for the determination of trace amounts of 5-chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenol (triclosan) in river water samples, is described. A stir bar coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is added to a 10 mL water sample and stirring is carried out for 120 min at room temperature (25 °C) in a vial. Then, the PDMS stir bar is subjected to TD–GC–MS. The detection limit of triclosan is 5 ng L −1 (ppt). The method shows linearity over the calibration range (0.02–20 μg L −1) and the correlation coefficient is higher than 0.997 for triclosan standard solution. The recovery of triclosan in river water samples ranges from 91.9 to 108.3% (RSD: 4.0–7.0%). This simple, accurate, sensitive, and selective analytical method may be used in the determination of trace amounts of triclosan in river water samples.

Use of experimental design in the optimisation of stir bar sorptive extraction followed by thermal desorption for the determination of brominated flame retardants in water samples

A method for the determination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) in water samples is proposed. The method involving stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) and thermal desorption followed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry was optimised using statistical design of experiments. In the first place, the influence of different polydimethylsiloxane stir bars was studied. A Plackett-Burman design was chosen to estimate the influence of five factors on the efficiency of the SBSE process: desorption time (5-10 min), desorption temperature (250-300 degrees C), desorption flow (50-100 mL min(-1)), cryofocusing temperature (-130 to 40 degrees C) and vent pressure (0-12.8 psi). Afterwards, two central composite designs were used to find the optimal process settings that were applied to the optimisation of both desorption and extraction efficiency. In the case of the desorption parameters, long desorption times (10 min) and desorption flows lower than 70 mL min(-1) yielded the best signals for the majority of compounds. However, different behaviour among the analytes was observed for the vent pressure and we decided to fix it at an intermediate value (7 psi). In the case of extraction parameters, the sample volume and the addition of NaCl did not have a significant effect, while the addition of methanol yielded better extraction responses. Remarkable recovery (82-106%) and repeatability (less than 18%) were attained. Furthermore, excellent regression coefficients (r2 = 0.991-0.999) and low detection limits (1.1-6.0 ng L(-1)) were also achieved for the congeners studied. The proposed method was applied to the analyses of PBDEs and PBBs in waters from the Basque Country, Spain.

Simultaneous determination of pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls in seawater and interstitial marine water samples, using stir bar sorptive extraction–thermal desorption–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry

A method for the simultaneous determination of semi-volatile organic contaminants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides) in marine samples has been developed, for the first time, using the stir bar sorptive extraction technique (SBSE) and thermal desorption coupled to capillary gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (SBSE-TD-GC–MS). Polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) was used for the extraction of the selected analytes and two procedures have been optimised and validated, one for seawater samples (100 mL) and another for interstitial water samples (10 mL), using PDMS stir bars of 20 mm and 10 mm size, respectively. The extraction and analytical conditions, such as extraction time, matrix effects, sample volume and desorption time, were optimised. The proposed methods are sensitive, simple and show good linearity and detection limits lower than 1 ng L −1 with seawater and lower than 10 ng L −1 with interstitial marine water for the majority of compounds tested. Repeatability and reproducibility, expressed as relative standard deviation, have values lower than 20% for the majority of analytes considered. The recoveries for both sample volume procedures are higher than 60 and 70% for 10 and 100 mL, respectively, except for the more apolar (some PAHs and PCBs) and the more polar (some triazines) analytes which present lower values. The present SBSE/GC/MS method was applied for the analysis of trace organic contaminants in seawater and interstitial water samples from Cadiz Bay (SW of Spain). Terbutylazine, DDX and some PAHs were found at several seawater sampling points at ng L −1 levels, and some PAHs in interstitial water too.

Stir-bar-sorptive extraction, with in-situ deconjugation, and thermal desorption with in-tube silylation, followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for measurement of urinary 4-nonylphenol and 4-tert-octylphenol glucuronides

A novel method, stir-bar-sorptive extraction (SBSE), with in-situ deconjugation and thermal desorption (TD) with in-tube silylation, followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), for determination of trace amounts of 4-nonylphenol glucuronide (NP-G) and 4-tert-octylphenol glucuronide (OP-G) in human urine, is described. The method involved correction by use of stable isotopically labeled internal standards 4-(1-methyl)octylphenol-d5 (NP-d) and deuterium 4-tert-octylphenol (OP-d). A human urine sample to which beta-glucuronidase had been added was extracted for 90 min at 37 degrees C using a stir bar coated with a 500-microm-thick layer of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). NP-G and OP-G were deconjugated, becoming free 4-nonylphenol (NP) and 4-tert-octylphenol (OP). The analytes were then extracted with the PDMS stir bar and the stir bar was subjected to TD with in-tube silylation; this was followed by GC-MS in selected-ion-monitoring (SIM) mode. To optimize the conditions for SBSE with in-situ deconjugation and to test recovery, NP-G and OP-G were synthesized by a biochemical technique in our laboratory. Average recoveries from human urine samples spiked with NP-G and OP-G were between 91.9 and 95.6% with correction using the added surrogate standards. Limits of detection were 0.11 ng mL-1 for NP and 0.01 ng mL-1 for OP. We also measured background levels of NP-G and OP-G in six urine samples from healthy volunteers. NP and OP were detected in the samples at concentrations of 0.62-1.95 ng mL-1 and <0.04-0.18 ng mL-1, respectively.

Stir bar sorptive extraction for the determination of volatile compounds in oak-aged wines

Stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) followed by a thermal desorption-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis has been optimized for the determination of 13 of the most important oak volatiles in wine samples, all in a single run. The stir bar sorptive extraction method was optimized in terms of temperature, time, pH and NaCl addition, and the best results were obtained after stirring the wine sample with the polydimethylsiloxane stir bar during 90 min at room temperature. The addition of sodium chloride did not enhance the volatile extraction. The method proposed showed good linearity over the concentration range tested, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.92 to 0.99 for all the analytes. The reproducibility and repeatability of the method was estimated between 0.11 and 5.45%. The detection and quantification limits of all analytes were lower than their respective olfactory threshold values, and, most importantly, no artifacts have been observed during the analysis as described in most extractions using other current methodologies.

Stir bar sorptive extraction and thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for trace analysis of benzophenone and its derivatives in water sample

A simple and highly sensitive method called stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) and thermal desorption (TD)-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which is used for the determination of trace amounts of benzophenone (BP) and its derivatives, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (BP-3) and 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-4′-methylbenzophenone (BP-10), in river water samples, is described. A stir bar coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is added to a 10 ml water sample and stirring is carried out for 120 min at room temperature (25 °C) in a vial. Then, the PDMS stir bar is subjected to TD-GC-MS. The detection limit is 0.5–1 pg ml −1 for BPs. The method shows good linearity and the correlation coefficients are higher than 0.997 for all the analytes. The average recoveries of the BPs are equal to or higher than 98.5% (R.S.D.: 1.5–5.1%). This simple, accurate, sensitive and selective analytical method may be used in the determination of trace amounts of BPs in river water samples.

Biomimetic measurement of allelochemical dynamics in the rhizosphere

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) materials were used to quantify levels of the photosynthesis inhibitor sorgoleone in the undisturbed rhizosphere of sorghum plants. The materials used included stir bars coated with PDMS (stir bar sorptive extraction), technical grade optical fiber coated with a thin film of PDMS (matrix-solid phase microextraction), and PDMS tubing. PDMS tubing retained the most sorgoleone. As analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography, amounts of sorgoleone retained on the PDMS materials increased with time. Other materials tested (polyurethane foam plugs, C18 and Tenax disks, and resin capsules) proved less suitable, as they were subject to sometimes extensive penetration by fine root hairs. These results demonstrate the potential for PDMS-based materials to monitor the release of allelochemicals in the undisturbed rhizosphere of allelopathic plants. Unlike extraction procedures that recover all available compounds present in the soil, PDMS functions in a manner more analogous to plant roots in sorbing compounds from soil solution or root exudates. Information on chemical dynamics in the rhizosphere is crucial for evaluating specific hypotheses of allelopathic effects, understanding allelopathic mechanisms, and assessing the importance of allelopathic processes in plant communities.
