Ornithogenic sedimentary profiles of n-alkanes and PAHs constrain breeding penguin population dynamics at Cape Bird, Ross Island, Antarctica, over the past 1,500 years

Ornithogenic sediment may contain important paleoecological information concerning past bird population dynamics. In this paper, we analyse the distribution of n-alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in two sedimentary profiles collected from abandoned penguin colonies at Cape Bird, Ross Island, Antarctica. The geochronology of the sediment profiles was determined using 210Pb and AMS 14C dating techniques, and spans the past 1500 years. We observe low levels of n-alkanes (0.93–2.67 μg g−1) and PAHs (20.5–46.8 ng g−1) concentrations dominated by short-chain n-alkanes, low-molecular-weight and alkyl PAHs. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) shows that the PC 1 scores for n-alkanes and PAHs are significantly correlated with the input intensity of penguin guano and penguin bioelements. Using these proxies in combination with Generalized Additive Model (GAM), we reveal that breeding penguin population growth reaches a historical peak during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) prior to 1550 CE. This growth in population size corresponds to the extent of sea ice cover and the activity of the local atmospheric-ocean circulation. Warming induced by El Niño and the positive phase of the Southern Annular Mode, along with the expansion of ice-free zones and increased oceanic nutrient and food availability, are considered primary factors contributing to the growth of breeding penguin populations. Additionally, variations in sea ice extent and Amundsen Sea Low significantly influence penguin population dynamics. Our study suggests that n-alkanes and PAHs may be valuable organic proxies for reconstructing historical changes in breeding penguin populations, with the local sea ice extent and atmospheric-oceanic circulation exerting a major influence on Antarctic penguin population dynamics.

Assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) profiles in heat-processed meat and fish: a study on health risk evaluation

The profiles of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in selected heat-processed meat and fish were evaluated to determine the potential health risk associated with consumption. The samples were analysed using a gas Chromatography-Mass spectrometer. Different concentrations of individual PAHs were detected in the samples, with the smoked samples having the highest concentrations. The total PAHs (mg/kg) in smoked samples were 2.763 ± 0.185 (game meat), 1.618 ± 0.102 (mackerel fish), and 1.718 ± 0.129 (catfish), whereas levels (mg/kg) in grilled samples were 0.771 ± 0.049 (chicken) and 0.911 ± 0.053 (fish). The total carcinogenic PAH (PAH7) concentrations (mg/kg) in grilled chicken and fish and smoked (game meat, mackerel fish, and catfish) samples were 0.231, 0.294, 0.440, 0.309, and 0.332, while their total PAH8 concentrations were 0.356, 0.371, 0.537, 0.465, and 0.476 respectively. The non-carcinogenic PAH risk estimations, both individually (hazard quotient) and cumulatively (hazard index), were below 1 in all the samples. The mean concentrations of PAH markers B[a]P and the PAH4 were above the EU limits in both the smoked and the grilled samples tested. This implies that exposure to high levels of these PAHs through regular consumption of these products may increase the risk of developing certain types of cancer and other health issues. The smoked fishes has the lowest MOE values for the PAH8 compared to the other samples. The margin of exposures (MOEs), carcinogenic toxic equivalent (TEQ), and excess cancer risk (ECR) also indicated that frequent consumption of smoked fish (mackerel or catfish) by an adult of 70 kg body weight above the reported intake rate of 0.0019 kg/AME/day for a prolonged period may have higher cancer risks than in other samples. Smoked game meat had the highest PAH16 level, but indicated a relatively lower risk level, possibly because of its relatively low intake rate (0.0004 kg/AME/day).

Thiopyran-Fused Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds Synthesized via Pt(II)-Catalyzed One-Pot Ring-Expansion and 6-endo Cyclization Reactions.

A series of thiopyran-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been straightforwardly synthesized from 2,5-di(1-en-3-ynyl)thiophene-containing precursors via one-pot ring-expansion and 6-endo cyclization reactions. The reaction monitoring and the density function theoretical calculation suggest that the ring-expansion reaction occurs prior to 6-endo cyclization. Moreover, the absorption profiles of the thiopyran-fused PAHs suggest that the π-conjugation extension on the side of the cyclopentadiene ring in the cyclopenta[b]thiochromene core is predominant in prolonging the effective conjugation length, while the effect from extension on the other side is negligible. Furthermore, all of the thiopyran-fused PAHs exhibit halochromic properties. Upon the addition of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, fluorescence "off-on" switches can be found for these thiopyran-fused PAHs. Therefore, this work not only provides a new synthetic approach for one-pot ring-expansion and 6-endo cyclization reactions but also expands the diversity of thiopyran-fused PAHs.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) phytoaccumulation in urban areas by Platanus × acerifolia, Celtis australis, and Tilia grandifolia leaves and branches.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations in the leaves and 1-year-old branches of three common tree species growing in a middle-sized city located in a moderate climate zone were estimated. For this purpose, PAH phytoaccumulation in Platanus × acerifolia, Celtis australis, and Tilia grandifolia species from highly urbanized, traffic congested, and highly PAH-contaminated streets was compared with trees from non-contaminated parks in the same urban core. The gathered data was used to define 17 PAH profiles, identify the main PAH pollution emission sources, and determine the organ and species specificity of PAHs accumulation. Due to the direct absorption of polluted air via stomata, the leaves accumulated up to 30% more PAHs compared to the 1-year-old branches. As expected, PAH concentrations were much higher in street trees, while heavy weight PAHs (with five and six rings) were accumulated in the highest concentrations. The highest foliar Σ17 PAH concentrations were detected in street-grown C. australis, followed by P. acerifolia and T. grandifolia (502.68, 488.45, and 339.47ngg-1 dry weight (DW), respectively). The same pattern was noted for Σ17 PAHs in branches (414.89, 327.58, and 342.99ngg-1 DW, respectively). Thus, T. grandifolia emerged as the least effective PAH sink as it accumulated up to ~ 40% less PAHs than P. acerifolia and C. australis leaves/branches. Among the 17 tracked PAHs, benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[a]pyrene, dibenzo[a,h]anthracene, and pyrene were found to have accumulated in the highest concentrations in all analyzed species irrespective of the site, and accounted for more than 50% of the total detected PAHs. Finally, a "black box" about species and organ specificity, as well as specific drivers that limit PAHs uptake capacity by trees, was opened, while this work provides insights into further PAH phytoremediation strategies.

Analysis and Assessment of Contamination Degree and Emission Sources of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs and Me-PAHs) in Surface Sediments from Central Coast of Vietnam

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives are a diverse group of organic pollutants, which are relatively persistent and toxic. Simultaneous determination of unsubstituted PAHs and methylated PAHs (Me-PAHs) is necessary to provide comprehensive insights into contamination levels and sources of these pollutants. In this study, we collected surface sediment samples in Vietnamese central coast to analyze 7 PAHs and 12 Me-PAHs. The sediment samples were extracted by using a focused ultrasonic processor with acetone/hexane (1:1) mixture and toluene. The extract was purified by column chromatography technique with activated silica gel and dichloromethane/hexane (1:3) as elution solvent. PAHs and Me-PAHs were determined by a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) system operated in electron impact ionization (EI) and selected ion monitoring mode (SIM). Concentrations of total 7 PAHs and 12 Me-PAHs ranged from 30 to 246 (average 92) nanograms per gram sediment (ng/g). These levels were comparable to or lower than those measured in Vietnamese river sediments and marine sediments from some other countries in the world. The accumulation profiles of PAHs and Me-PAHs indicated that their emissions are likely associated with mixed pyrogenic and petrogenic sources. Our results have provided preliminary information about the pollution degree and accumulation characteristics of these substances in Vietnamese marine environments. Additional comprehensive studies should be performed to characterize contamination characterisrics, emission sources, and ecological risks of PAHs and their derivatives in this country.

Lichen biomonitoring to assess spatial variability, potential sources and human health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and airborne metal concentrations in Manchester (UK)

Airborne metals and organic pollutants are linked to severe human health impacts, i.e. affecting the nervous system and being associated with cancer. Airborne metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban environments are derived from diverse sources, including combustion and industrial and vehicular emissions, posing a threat to air quality and subsequently human health. A lichen biomonitoring approach was used to assess spatial variability of airborne metals and PAHs, identify potential pollution sources and assess human health risks across the City of Manchester (UK). Metal concentrations recorded in lichen samples were highest within the city centre area and along the major road network, and lichen PAH profiles were dominated by 4-ring PAHs (189.82 ng g−1 in Xanthoria parietina), with 5- and 6-ring PAHs also contributing to the overall PAH profile. Cluster analysis and pollution index factor (PIF) calculations for lichen-derived metal concentrations suggested deteriorated air quality being primarily linked to vehicular emissions. Comparably, PAH diagnostic ratios identified vehicular sources as a primary cause of PAH pollution across Manchester. However, local more complex sources (e.g. industrial emissions) were further identified. Human health risk assessment found a “moderate” risk for adults and children by airborne potential harmful element (PHEs) concentrations, whereas PAH exposure in Manchester is potentially linked to 1455 (ILCR = 1.45 × 10−3) cancer cases (in 1,000,000). Findings of this study indicate that an easy-to-use lichen biomonitoring approach can aid to identify hotspots of impaired air quality and potential human health impacts by airborne metals and PAHs across an urban environment, particularly at locations that are not continuously covered by (non-)automated air quality measurement programmes.Graphical

Use of molecular composition and compound-specific isotope analysis for source appointment of PAHs in sediments of a highly industrialized area

This study utilized both conventional molecular analysis and compound-specific isotopic techniques to identify the sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments of Ulsan Bay, South Korea. The concentrations of 15 traditional and 11 emerging PAHs were determined in sediments from 21 source sites and 26 bay sites. The concentrations and compositions of traditional and emerging PAHs varied significantly, even at sites close to the source areas. The results obtained from diagnostic ratios and the positive matrix factorization model for source identification were inconsistent in adjacent source areas. The δ13C profiles of PAHs, such as phenanthrene (Phe), fluoranthene (Fl), pyrene (Py), and benz[a]anthracene (BaA) in the sediments showed distinct features depending on the surrounding sources. In urban sediments, lighter δ13CPhe values were observed (mean: −25.1‰), whereas relatively heavier values of δ13CPy were found in petroleum industry areas (mean: −23.4‰). The Bayesian isotope mixing model indicates that the predominant source of PAHs in Ulsan Bay sediments was the petroleum industry (45%), followed by the non-ferrous metals industry (30%), automobile industry (18%), and urban areas (6.3%). These results demonstrated the utility of stable isotopes in assessing the sources and contributions of PAHs in small-scale regions. However, there are still limitations in compound-specific isotope analysis of PAHs, including insufficient end-members for each source, difficulty in analysis, and the influence of non-point sources; thus, further study is needed to expand its application.

Occurrence, Sources, and Health Risks of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Road Environments from Harbin, a Megacity of China.

To obtain a comprehensive understanding about that occurrence, sources, and effects on human health of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in road environmental samples from Harbin, concentrations of 32 PAHs in road dust, green belt soil, and parking lot dust samples were quantified. The total PAH concentrations ranged from 0.95 to 40.7 μg/g and 0.39 to 43.9 μg/g in road dust and green belt soil, respectively, and were dominated by high molecular weight PAHs (HMW-PAHs). Despite the content of PAHs in arterial roads being higher, the composition profile of PAHs was hardly influenced by road types. For parking lot dust, the range of total PAH concentrations was 0.81-190 μg/g, and three-ring to five-ring PAHs produced the maximum contribution. Compared with surface parking lots (mean: 6.12 μg/g), higher total PAH concentrations were detected in underground parking lots (mean: 33.1 μg/g). The diagnostic ratios of PAHs showed that petroleum, petroleum combustion, and biomass/coal combustion were major sources of PAHs in the samples. Furthermore, according to the Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk model, the cancer risks of three kinds of samples for adults and children were above the threshold (10-6). Overall, this study demonstrated that PAHs in the road environment of Harbin have a certain health impact on local citizens.

Emission profiles, source identifications, and health risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a road tunnel located in Xi'an, China.

Understanding the sources and characteristics of PM2.5-bound PAHs from traffic-related pollution can provide valuable data for mitigating air contamination from traffic in local urban regions. However, little information on PAHs is available regarding the typical arterial highway-Qinling Mountains No.1 tunnel in Xi'an. We estimated the profiles, sources, and emission factors of PM2.5-bound PAHs in this tunnel. The total PAH concentrations were 22.78 ng·m-3 and 52.80 ng·m-3 at the tunnel middle and exit, which were 1.09 and 3.84 times higher than that at the tunnel entrance. Pyr, Flt, Phe, Chr, BaP, and BbF were the dominant PAH species (representing approximately 78.01% of total PAHs). The four rings PAHs were dominant (58%) among the total PAH concentrations in PM2.5. The results demonstrated that diesel and gasoline vehicles exhaust emissions contributed 56.81% and 22.60% to the PAHs, respectively, while the corresponding value for together brakes, tyre wear, and road dust was 20.59%. The emission factors of total PAHs were 29.35 μg·veh-1·km-1, and emission factors of 4 rings PAHs were significantly higher than those of the other PAHs. The sum of ILCR was estimated to be 1.41×10-4, which accorded with acceptable level of cancer risk (10-6-10-4), PAHs should not ignored as they still affect the public health of inhabitants. This study shed light on PAH profiles and traffic-related sources in the tunnel, thereby facilitating the assessment of control measures targeting PAHs in local areas.

Effects of pyrolysis conditions and heteroatom modification on the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons profile of biochar prepared from sorghum distillery residues

The formation of 2- to 6-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sorghum distillery residue-derived biochar (SDRBC) was evaluated under different thermochemical pyrolysis conditions of carbonization atmosphere (N2 or CO2), temperature (300–900 °C) and doping with nonmetallic elements, i.e., N, B, O, P, N + B, and N + S. The results indicated that without surface modification, PAHs formation was 944 ± 74 ng g–1, the highest level, and 181 ± 16 ng g–1, the lowest level, at 300 °C in N2 and CO2 atmosphere, respectively. Boron doping of SDRBC significantly reduced the PAHs content (by 97%) under N2 at 300 °C. Results demonstrated that boron modified SDRBC exhibited the highest degree of PAHs reduction. Combined pyrolysis temperature and atmosphere in addition to heteroatom doping is a robust and viable strategy for efficient suppression of PAHs formation and high-value utilization of pyrolysis products of low carbon footprint.

Concentrations, Source Identification and Potential Ecological and Human Health Risks Assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Agricultural Soils of Hamedan County, West of Iran

ABSTRACT This study was performed to examine the possible ecological impact of sixteen PAHs listed as priorities by the US EPA in the agricultural soils of Hamedan County (ASHC), west of Iran, in 2021. In so doing, 36 surface soil samples were collected from 12 agriculturally-related sampling locations. The soxhlet method was employed to extract analytes, and the gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method was utilized to identify the chemicals PAHs in the samples. Based on the data, there were 16PAHs (∑16PAHs) in total concentrations (µg kg−1), ranging from 435 to 3292, with an average of 1806. The PAH profiles were dominated by PAHs with larger molecular weights (≥4 rings), accounting for 78% of the total mass of 16PAH. Based to Molecular Diagnostic Ratios (MDRs) the majority of PAH molecules were found to have pyrogenic origins. As the results indicated, Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene and benz(ghi)perylene posed very little ecological harm to soil organisms, based on the data, while other PAHs reflected significant environmental risks in these soils. All of the stations were identified as being in the low-risk group by the overall ecological risk of 16PAH in surface soil samples. The total incremental lifetime cancer risks (Total ILCRs) of PAH compounds for children with an average of 7.51 × 10−7 (ranging from 1.66 × 10−7 to 1.50 × 10−6) indicated negligible potential cancer and human health risks; whereas, the total ILCRs for adults with an average of 1.59 × 10−6 (ranging from 3.65 × 10−7 to 3.30 × 10−6) showing a low potential carcinogenic risk of PAH compounds in the study location. These findings imply that eating food cultivated in contaminated soils and directly digesting soil may be harmful to human health. Therefore, regular and periodic monitoring of agricultural soils is recommended to maintain consumer’s health of agricultural products.

Occurrence and probabilistic risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in blood and urine of auto-mechanics in Akure Metro, Nigeria

This study provides baseline data on the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in blood and urine samples of auto-mechanics, using Nigeria as a case study. Eighteen auto-mechanics participated in the study excluding two controls. The concentrations for the ΣPAHs across all participants (excluding control) ranged from 1.67 to 3.30 (2.17 ± 0.58) in blood with a significantly higher (P < 0.05) range of 7.61 to 10.76 (8.69 ± 1.00) in urine. The high molecular weight PAHs (4-6 rings) dominated the PAH profile in both blood (≥ 92%) and urine (≥ 87%) across all locations. Dibenz(a)anthracene was the most distributed PAH, while acenaphthene and indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene were the least distributed. The dermal route constituted approximately 99% of the total chronic exposure, followed by ingestion, and the least via inhalation. The hazard index (HI) was below the safe thresholds (HI = 1), suggesting non-carcinogenic PAH effects. However, all the participants including control samples had carcinogenic risk (CR) values above the acceptable level of 10-6 in both blood and urine samples. The carcinogenic and mutagenic potencies were higher in urine than in blood. The results suggest less acute toxicity and more potential chronic effects. The computed elimination ratio (> 1) suggests low excretion in urine and a potentially harmful trend. Molecular diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis suggest mixed PAH sources. The study revealed biomonitoring solely dependent on blood analysis may greatly underestimate health risks due to PAH exposure. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to provide levels of PAHs in the blood and urine of Nigerian mechanics. Findings herein will support policymakers at all levels in re-focusing attention to the less prioritized professions that pre-disposes people to PAHs and other emerging pollutants in society.

Biodiesel exhaust particle airway toxicity and the role of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Renewable alternatives to fossil diesel (FD) including fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) biodiesel have become more prevalent. However, toxicity of exhaust material from their combustion, relative to the fuels they are displacing has not been fully characterised. This study was carried out to examine particle toxicity within the lung epithelium and the role for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Exhaust particles from a 20% (v/v) blend of FAME biodiesel had little impact on primary airway epithelial toxicity compared to FD derived particles but did result in an altered profile of PAHs, including an increase in particle bound carcinogenic B[a]P. Higher blends of biodiesel had significantly increased levels of more carcinogenic PAHs, which was associated with a higher level of stress response gene expression including CYP1A1, NQO1 and IL1B. Removal of semi-volatile material from particulates abolished effects on airway cells. Particle size difference and toxic metals were discounted as causative for biological effects. Finally, combustion of a single component fuel (Methyl decanoate) containing the methyl ester molecular structure found in FAME mixtures, also produced more carcinogenic PAHs at the higher fuel blend levels. These results indicate the use of FAME biodiesel at higher blends may be associated with an increased particle associated carcinogenic and toxicity risk.

Pyrolysis processes affecting polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon profile of pineapple leaf biochar exemplified by atmosphere/temperature and heteroatom doping

The content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in pineapple leaf biochar was examined as a function of pyrolysis atmosphere (CO2 or N2), pyrolysis temperature (300–900 °C), and heteroatom (N, B, O, P, NP, or NS) doping. Without doping, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon production was maximal (1332 ± 27 ng/g) in CO2 at 300 °C and minimal (157 ± 2 ng/g) in N2 at 700 °C. The main components naphthalene and acenaphthylene accounted for about 91% of the total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in the biochar prepared under CO2 at 300 °C. Under the maximal polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon production conditions (CO2, 300 °C), doping decreased the total hydrocarbon content by 49% (N), 61% (B), 73% (O), 92% (P), 93% (NB), and 96% (NS). The results shed new light on the management of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in BC production by controlling the pyrolysis atmosphere and temperature in addition to heteroatom doping. Results significantly contributed to the development of circular bioeconomy.

Evaluation of Generic PAH Profiles Commonly Used in Receptor Models: Implications for Source Control Policy

The use of receptor models, such as EPA’s Chemical Mass Balance, to develop source control policies requires careful consideration of the validity of model inputs. Given the challenges of determining appropriate site-specific polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) source profiles, researchers investigating sources of PAHs in sediments often take profiles from the literature. Some published profiles, such as those first proposed in Li et al. (2003), have been used so often they have effectively become default inputs. In this paper, we investigate the origins of Li’s profiles, and use statistical methods to evaluate how accurately they represent the sources claimed. The results indicate that due to high intrasource variability and intersource similarities, Li’s profiles fail to meet assumptions underlying receptor models and should not be used as generic PAH source inputs. Implications of the misapplication of receptor models used to promote source control policies are discussed. The results call into question a series of papers that claim that refined tar pavement sealers are a significant source of PAHs in urban sediments.

Effect of sorption properties on the content, ecotoxicity, and bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in bottom sediments.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) tend to accumulate in the sediment due to their high hydrophobicity. Despite PAHs have been the subject of several reviews, PAH sorption processes in bottom sediments has not been comprehensively discucorrelation coefficients between sorption parameters and contessed. Understanding the dependencies governing PAH sorption processes will allow to predict, monitor, and mitigate the ecological effects of PAH contamination and the associated risks to humans or wildlife. The objectives of the study were to assess the relationship between the sorption properties and the content of PAHs in bottom sediments and mussels. The PAH profile was dominated by higher-molecular hydrocarbons, which accounted for 73% of the total concentration of PAHs. Potentiometric studies revealed the steric-based PAH sorption mechanism that strongly depended on the presence of negatively dissociating structures such as carboxylic or phenolic functional groups. Based on the changes in Q8 values, the size-exclusion effect was more likely for 5- and 6-ring compounds. Pores <5µm, which had the largest share in the specific surface area, were the preferred sites for PAH sequestration and stabilization in bottom sediments. The availability of PAHs was reduced in sediments with high organic matter content. The PAH bioaccumulation factor significantly decreased with increasing TOC content in sediments. Higher mortality and growth inhibition of H. incongruens were observed in samples with high and medium TOC contents than in those with low TOC content.
