Assessment of parent and alkyl -PAHs in surface sediments of Iranian mangroves on the northern coast of the Persian Gulf: Spatial accumulation distribution, influence factors, and ecotoxicological risks

Spatial patterns, potential origins, and ecotoxicological risk of alkylated (APAH) –and parent –(PPAH) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were studied in mangrove surface sediments along the northern coasts of the Persian Gulf, Iran. The mean total concentrations (ngg−1dw) ∑32PAH, ∑PPAHs and ∑APAHs in sediments were 3482 (1689–61228), 2642 (1109–4849), and 840 (478–1273), respectively. The spatial variability was similar among these PAH groups, with the highest levels occurring in Nayband National Marine Park (NNMP). Physicochemical environmental factors, such as sediment grain size, and total organic carbon (TOC) contents, are significant factors of PAH distribution. These findings suggest that PAH pollution level is moderate-to-high, supporting the current view that mangrove ecosystems are under intensive anthropogenic impacts, such as petrochemical, oil and gas loads, port activities, and urbanization. Non-parametric multidimensional scaling (NPMDS) ordination demonstrated that NNMP mangrove is the critical site exhibiting high loading of PAH pollutants. Here, for the first time in this region, Soil quality guidelines (SQGs), Toxic equivalency quotient (TEQ), Mutagenic equivalency quotient (MEQ), and composition indices comprising Mean maximum permissible concentration quotient (m-MPC-Q), and Mean effect range median quotient (m-ERM-Q) methods were used to have a comprehensive risk assessment for PAH compounds and confirmed medium-to-high ecological risks of PAHs in the study area, particularly in the western part of the Gulf, highlighting the industrial impacts on the environment.

Spatial-temporal Distribution and Source Analysis of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the Sediments of Poyang Lake

The concentrations, spatial-temporal distribution, and influencing factors of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the sediments of Poyang Lake were studied, and a quantitative source analysis of PAHs in different areas of the lake was conducted. PAHs were widespread within the sediments. The concentrations of ∑16PAHs in the surface sediments of all sites ranged from 203 to 2 318 μg·kg-1. The concentrations of PAHs in the surface sediments of the lake body were higher than those in the surface sediments of the inlet rivers. The ratio of PAHs in Poyang Lake was 4 rings > 5 rings > 6 rings > 3 rings > 2 rings; the composition of 4-ring PAHs was dominant, and its content accounted for 86.11% of ∑16PAHs. The 2- and 3-ring and some 4-ring PAHs, including Flua and Pyr, were more susceptible to SOM, and the 4 through 6-ring PAHs were more susceptible to ORP and heavy metals and other environmental factors. Spatially, the higher concentration of ∑16PAHs occurred in the area of the lake adjacent to Duchang County and Poyang County, where the terrain was relatively closed, and the water exchange with the surrounding area was less than that in other sections, which was not conducive to the migration, transformation, and degradation of pollutants. In the temporal distribution, the changes in PAHs concentration level and the development of GDP in Jiangxi Province showed high consistency, and the influence of economic development and human activities might have been the main reason for the increasing PAHs concentration level. The main sources of PAHs in surface sediments of Poyang Lake included petroleum pollution and oil and coal and biomass combustion sources, and there were some spatial differences in PAHs sources in different regions. This study can provide a reference for PAHs pollution in surface sediments of Poyang Lake, which is important for the ecological environmental protection and management of Poyang Lake.

Status of different anthropogenic organic pollutants accumulated in sediments from Olt River Basin, Romania: From distribution and sources to risk assessment

Some organic pollutants including organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been banned from production worldwide, but due to their toxicity and persistence are still of concern. Also, unintentional by-products of combustion and industrial processes such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), represent a permanent threat to the safety of the environment and the population. In this study, surface sediment samples from the middle and lower Olt River Basin (ORB), Romania, including dams, the main tributaries and the confluence with Danube River were collected during seasonal sampling campaigns in 2019 and analyzed for 13 OCPs, 12 PCBs and 15 PAHs in order to evaluate the impact of the main anthropogenic activities in the area (industrial activities and agriculture) and the ecological status of the ORB. The registered levels of OCPs, PCBs and PAHs in surface sediments varied from low to significantly polluted environments, indicating a clear spatial distribution between sites based on concentrations and congener profiles correlated with the influence of anthropogenic activities in the surrounding area. Based on some molecular diagnostic ratio and multivariate statistical analysis, both non-point sources and point sources deposition by surface runoff or atmospheric deposition were identified. Overall, the contamination profile of the study area reveals significant amounts of organochlorine compounds, resulting from the industrial production of chlorinated products, including lindane, but also from the long-term agricultural use of both HCHs and DDTs, more than half of the sites having levels that pose a potential risk for benthic organisms. Therefore, levels of POPs in the hot-spots sampling locations raise numerous concerns about the safety of the environment and the population in the region, requiring immediate actions.

Seasonal distribution and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments from the Giresun coast of southeastern Black Sea

Seasonal sediment samples were collected along the Giresun coastline of southeastern Black Sea and analyzed to detect the levels of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The PAH levels, ranging from 28.47 to 444.36 ng g−1 with the mean of 102.57 ng g−1 remained lower than those detected in most of the other sediment studies conducted worldwide. The percentage of three-ring PAHs (38.9%) was rather high, followed by that of 5-ring PAHs (21.8%). Detection rates revealed that PAHs in surface sediments along the Giresun coastline are mainly associated with coal combustion and local emissions. The evaluation with sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) showed that the level of PAHs was comparable to that at which the risk of adverse biological effects cannot be ruled out (≥TEL and <PEL) in some stations. The risk posed by PAHs in Giresun coastal sediments appears to be low to moderate ecological risk according to the risk quotient.

Source and Distribution of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Surface Sediment from Chalong Bay, Phuket, Thailand

This study aimed to investigate the spatial distribution and apportionment of potential sources of the 16 US-EPA priority PAHs in surface sediments of Chalong Bay, Phuket, Thailand. A total 28 of sediment samples were collected from areas with high maritime activity in Chalong Bay, subjected to conventional high recovery Soxhlet extraction, purified with SiO2 column chromatography, and quantified by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). Total concentration of PAHs (Σ16PAHs) ranged from 31.15 to 1696 ng g−1 dry weight, with an average of 198.2 ± 318.5 ng g−1 dry weight. Binary diagnostic ratios plots were used to distinguish between petrogenic and pyrogenic sources. Most of the PAHs in sediments originated from pyrolytic sources. PCA analysis explained 82.3 % of the variance by only 4 predominant components. The first principal component (PC1) (26.7 %) was mainly contributed to urban street runoff and municipal wastewater discharge. PC2 (25.8 %) represented vehicular combustion sources, PC3 (19.1 %) was attributed to petrogenic sources, and PC4 (10.7 %) was only associated with Naphthalene. The sources of PAHs distributed around Chalong Bay included oil spills, combustion of fossil fuels by shipping, urban street runoff, and municipal wastewater discharge. Each type of sources affected different locations along shores of Chalong Bay.

Distribution and Sources of n-Alkanes and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Sediments Around Oil Production Facilities in the Escravos River Basin, Niger Delta, Nigeria.

This study provides data on the characteristic levels, spatial patterns, sources, and risk of n-alkanes (AHs) [octane, n-C8, totetracontane, n-C40] and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surficial sediments from the Escravos River Basin (ERB), Nigeria. The n-alkane and PAH concentrations in sediments were quantified by chromatographic methods. The concentrations of AHs and PAHs in the ERB sediments varied from 95 to 3430µgg-1 and from 0.75 to 213µgg-1, respectively. Both the concentrations of AHs and PAHs in ERB sediments exceeded their respective guideline values. The carbon preference index and other AH markers provide evidence that the AHs in the ERB sediments originated from petroleum sources. Ecological risk assessment indicated that the ecological risk relating to an organism's contact with PAHs in the ERB sediments was high. The possible carcinogenic risk arising from human exposure with PAHs in surface sediments through accidental oral ingestion and skin contact exceeded the safe level of 10-6, indicating a considerable probable cancer risk for fishermen and other inhabitants of the ERB. PAH isomer ratios and multivariate statistics suggested that the PAHs in sediments from the ERB originated from gas flaring inputs, discharges from oil drilling platforms, diesel engines, ships, and speed boats, and combustion of wood and other biomass.

Spatial and temporal variations of PAHs in surface sediments of estuarine and coast of CanGio wetland, Vietnam.

Surface sediments from estuarine and coast of CanGio wetland (CGW) of Hochiminh City, Vietnam, were investigated to identify the spatial and temporal variations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The total PAHs showed wide variation but similar to patterns observed (F = 0.901, p = 0.46) in LongTau (31 ± 77ng/g dry weight, n = 13), SoaiRap (53 ± 81, n = 4), ThiVai (60 ± 62, n = 10) estuaries, and coastal areas (112 ± 211, n = 9). A decreasing trend in the wet season (F = 8.8, p = 0.01) reflected that inland sources such as wastewater discharged and atmospherically transported contaminants contributed to PAHs in sediments. The risk posed by the PAHs in the coastal and estuarine areas of CGW is still negligible. The present study provides baseline data, which can be used for regular monitoring and future strategy of environmental protection for the study area.

Pollution status of PAHs in surface sediments from different marginal seas along China Mainland: A quantitative evaluation on a national scale

China is one of the largest coastal countries in the world, which have all kinds of marginal systems. Studies have reported the sedimentary Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution status, including their concentrations, sources and risks, in localized marginal systems, which showed significant differences. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of their pollution in marginal systems along China Mainland is urgently needed on a national scale. In the present study, the concentrations of 16 priority PAHs in surface sediments from 62 different marginal systems along China Mainland were reviewed. Their sources were identified and apportioned, and the health risks and ecological risks were also evaluated. As a result, the total sedimentary PAHs varied in a wide range of 4–3700 ng/g, with the lowest values observed in Kenting National Park in East China Sea and the highest values observed in Daliao River estuary in Bohai Sea. Their concentrations suggested that they were not contaminated-weakly contaminated in most study areas, but were contaminated-heavily contaminated in some pollution hot-spots. Source identification and apportion suggested that the sedimentary PAHs were mainly originated from coal combustion, vehicular emission, natural gas combustion and petrogenic source, but the coal combustion and vehicular emission contributed most to their emission (>90%). Risk assessment suggested that the carcinogenic risks were lower than the upper limit of the acceptable range (10−4), which were acceptable at a large spatial scale. However, for sediments from Qinhuangdao coastal wetland, Daliao River estuary and Yangpu Bay, their carcinogenic risks were higher than 10−4, which will pose high carcinogenic risks for adults. The non-carcinogenic risks were acceptable in all marginal systems with values lower than the safety guideline (<1). In the ecological risk assessment, their concentrations in some pollution hot-spots were higher than the safety guidelines (effects range low, ERL), suggesting a higher potential ecological risk.

Field analysis of PAHs in surface sediments of the Pearl River Estuary and their environmental impacts.

Based on a monthly field survey in 2011 of the Pearl River Estuary, the dynamics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments (depth < 5cm) were explored. The seasonal variations in PAH level and composition were investigated in this study, as well as their environmental behaviors, the role of particles, and source apportionment. The concentration of the sum of 16 priority PAHs (defined as ∑16PAHs) ranged from 0.32 to 1.10μg/g, while that of the sum of 62 PAHs (defined as ∑tPAHs) varied from 0.83 to 2.75μg/g. The levels of both the ∑16PAHs and ∑tPAHs peaked in February, although the minimum levels appeared in different months-December and August, respectively. The seasonal difference in the ∑tPAHs was significant (flood season, 7.69μg/g; dry season, 10.51μg/g). The 5-ring PAH compound (e.g., perylene) was the most abundant and was responsible for 35% of the total, which implied a terrestrial input source via the Pearl River. Sediment particles were predominantly composed of clayed sand, and sediment PAHs showed a greater tendency to be adsorbed onto the large-sized particles rather than the fine fractions. Total organic carbon (TOC) could considerably facilitate the sediment PAHs. Principal component analysis revealed that vehicle emission sources, petroleum sources, and combustion sources were the major anthropogenic contamination sources. The diagnostic ratios of various individual PAHs were also explored. These findings are particularly useful for understanding the geochemistry of organic pollutants in the complex estuarine environment.

Risk assessment and source apportionment of PAHs in surface sediments from Caofeidian Long Island, China

Sediment samples were collected from Caofeidian Long Island, China to investigate the contamination level and distribution pattern of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Source identification and risk assessment were also performed on these PAHs. The distribution patterns and source identification results indicated that the PAHs in the survey area originated from coal, biomass, and petroleum combustion as well as the combination of these three processes. Although the concentration of fluorene in the sediment exceeded the ERL level in some sampling sites, the effect range low–effect range median ratio implied a relatively low level of toxicity in these sediments. Meanwhile, the mean effects range–median quotient indicated that the 16 PAHs in sediments from Caofeidian Long Island pose a low ecological risk.

Determination of influencing factors on historical concentration variations of PAHs in West Taihu Lake, China

The adsorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by components such as elemental carbon (EC), total organic carbon (TOC), and particles is different, and EC and PAHs are good materials for reconstructing historical human activity patterns and pollution conditions. In this study, the effects of EC (soot and char), TOC and particles of different grain size on PAHs in surface sediments were quantitatively analysed, and their historical concentrations in a sediment core from western Taihu Lake were reconstructed. The contents of soot, TOC, clay, EC and char explained 57.2%, 27.6%, 26.0%, 24.0% and 16.4%, respectively, of the PAH concentrations in surface sediments. The correlation between the soot and PAH levels was significantly higher than that between the char, TOC, and clay contents and PAH levels, and PAHs were mainly affected by the local economic development and human activity, as indicated by metrics of population, highway mileage, coal burning, and industrial output. With the development of the economy of the Taihu Lake Basin, the composition of PAHs in the sediments has changed: the proportion of low-molecular-weight PAHs decreased from 42.4% to 17.5%, and that of high-molecular-weight PAHs increased from 58.7% to 82.5%. The concentration of PAHs in pore water from Taihu Lake over the past 100 years was reconstructed and ranged from 43.1 to 961.2 μg L−1, with an average of 180.7 μg L−1. After China's reform and opening up, the concentrations of various PAHs in Taihu Lake changed from safe to chronic pollution levels. The ratios of lead (Pb) isotopes and the diagnostic ratios of PAHs showed that the main sources of PAHs in western Taihu Lake sediments were human activities such as coal and petroleum combustion.

Occurrence and Risk Assessment of PAHs in Surface Sediments from Western Arctic and Subarctic Oceans.

In the fourth Chinese National Arctic Research Expedition (from July to September, 2010), 14 surface sediment samples were collected from the Bering Sea, Chukchi Sea, and Canadian Basin to examine the spatial distributions, potential sources, as well as ecological and health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The ∑PAH (refers to the sum of 16 priority PAHs) concentration range from 27.66 ng/g to 167.48 ng/g (dry weight, d.w.). Additionally, the concentrations of ∑PAH were highest in the margin edges of the Canadian Basin, which may originate from coal combustion with an accumulation of Canadian point sources and river runoff due to the surface ocean currents. The lowest levels occurred in the northern of Canadian Basin, and the levels of ∑PAH in the Chukchi Sea were slightly higher than those in the Being Sea. Three isomer ratios of PAHs (Phenanthrene/Anthracene, BaA/(BaA+Chy), and LMW/HMW) were used to investigate the potential sources of PAHs, which showed the main source of combustion combined with weaker petroleum contribution. Compared with four sediment quality guidelines, the concentrations of PAH are much lower, indicating a low potential ecological risk. All TEQPAH also showed a low risk to human health. Our study revealed the important role of the ocean current on the redistribution of PAHs in the Arctic.

Indirect influence of eutrophication on air – water exchange fluxes, sinking fluxes, and occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

How eutrophication affects biogeochemical processes of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in aquatic environments is a pending challenge. Although the direct influence of eutrophication on biogeochemical processes of HOCs in waters has been well addressed, the indirect influence of eutrophication on biogeochemical processes of HOCs remains largely unknown. Here we take the large shallow eutrophic Lake Taihu in China and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as examples to provide novel knowledge on the indirect influence of eutrophication on air – water exchange fluxes, sinking fluxes, and occurrence of HOCs. The air – water exchange fluxes of individual PAHs varied dramatically at different sites in all studied seasons. The sinking flux of ΣPAH16 was 14 855.3 ± 1579.9, 3548.9 ± 650.6, and 5588.4 ± 530.7 ng m−2 d−1 in spring, summer, and winter. The corresponding concentration of ΣPAH16 in surface sediments was 713.1 ± 78.6, 339.7 ± 36.6, and 293.0 ± 35.2 ng g−1 d.w. Our study for the first time suggested that recruitment of cyanobacteria from surface sediments to water column in spring reduced the concentrations of PAHs in surface sediments, but enhanced their concentrations in the bulk water column, and overwintering of cyanobacteria in winter enhanced the concentrations of PAHs in surface sediments. High pH induced indirectly by eutrophication decreased seasonal air – water exchange fluxes (enhanced net volatilization) of PAHs, reduced the aromaticity of surface sediments and the hydrophobicity of phytoplankton cell surface, and reduced the accumulation of PAHs in surface sediments and phytoplankton consequently. Sinking fluxes and daily loss of PAHs from the water column decreased with phytoplankton biomass because the fraction of organic matter sinking from the water column decreased with phytoplankton biomass. Our study provides novel complementary knowledge for the biological pump for HOCs, and has important implications for understanding the coupling between eutrophication and biogeochemical processes of HOCs in subtropical shallow eutrophic waters.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments from the largest deep plateau lake in China: Occurrence, sources and biological risk

The unprecedented rate at which economy, urbanization and industrialization have occurred in China in the last few decades has resulted in environmental pollution in China. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are of great concern because of their persistence, long-range transport properties, and health risk as potential carcinogens and mutagens. Plateau lakes are special ecosystem and located in remote western China. To our knowledge, studies on PAHs in sediments of plateau deep lakes in China are scarce. Therefore, PAHs in surface sediments from Fuxian Lake, the largest deep plateau lake in China, were investigated. The total PAH concentrations ranged from 83.2 to 261.7, with a mean concentration of 143.3ng/g. Four-ring PAHs (39.1–73.9%) were most abundant in all samples. The composition of PAHs was characterized by high molecular weight PAHs, and FA and PHE were the dominant constituents. A correlation analysis revealed that TOC was positively significantly correlated with total PAHs, while percentages of grain size fraction were poorly correlated with total PAHs. PAH diagnostic ratios demonstrated that PAHs mainly originated from biomass, coal, and petroleum combustion. Taking as a whole, surface sediments of Fuxian Lake had a 9% incidence of adverse biological effects based on the mean effects range-median quotient.

Influence of blooms of phytoplankton on concentrations of hydrophobic organic chemicals in sediments and snails in a hyper-eutrophic, freshwater lake

Blooms of phytoplankton, which are common in freshwater ecosystems, might not only affect quality of water but also influence biogeochemical processing of pollutants. Based on three years of field observations in sediments of Tai Lake, China, concentrations of organochlorine (OC) pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in areas where blooms occurred were 2.4 and 3.4 times greater than concentrations in areas without blooms. Concentrations of octylphenol (OP), nonylphenol (NP) and bisphenol A (BPA) in areas where blooms did not occur were 3.8, 4.4 and 2.6 times greater than concentrations in areas where blooms did occur. To explain the differences, simultaneous, seasonally determinations of the water-sediment-phytoplankton-snails disequilibria were determined empirically. Greater sinking and lesser diffusion were shown to be probable drivers of the burial of δ-HCH, 4-ring and 5-ring PAHs in surface sediments of areas in which blooms occurred, being as much as 0.58, 38 and 45 g month−1. Large biodegradation and low burial was shown to be the probable reason of the inverse proportion of NP, OP and BPA in both water and sediment to biomass which might be due to the enhanced metabolic capacity of bacterial community associated with algae blooms. These phenomena further influence the persistent hydrophobic organic chemicals in the snail species (Bellamya quadrata) being greater in winter but lesser in summer, which is probably due to the positive relationship with the concentrations in sediment when snails were dormant and with the concentrations in water after dormancy. Thus, in Tai Lake, the fate and distribution of persistent and biodegradable contaminants in sediments and snails is influenced by blooms of phytoplankton, which should be included in models of environmental fates of contaminants.

Historical Trends of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Sediments of Toulon Bay (South of France)

The levels of 16 USEPA priority PAHs in surface sediments and four dated sediment cores from Toulon Bay were determined and characterized by strong implantation. The total PAH levels in the superficial sediments ranged from 0.30 to 34.11 mg.kg-1 dry weight in the 0-5 layer and from 0.34 to 54.68 mg.kg-1 dry weight in the 5-10 layer. The qualitative assessment of sediment samples revealed relatively high PAH levels compared with French reference values. The results indicated that the PAHs in Toulon Bay are of pyrolytic origin. Estimating the rate of sedimentation based on pronounced events, such as explosive growth in the use of petroleum products, major developments, and periods of conflict, can be used to follow the history of pollution based on its composition over a period of approximately 130 to 180 years, depending on the length of the cores.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coastal sediments from urban and industrial areas of Asaluyeh Harbor, Iran: distribution, potential source and ecological risk assessment.

The distribution and toxicity levels of 16 EPA priority pollutant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the sediments of Asaluyeh shore, Iran were investigated. The total concentrations of the PAHs in surface sediments ranged from 1,054 to 17,448 ng/g dry weights with a mean concentration of 8,067 ng/g. The spatial distribution of PAHs showed that PAH levels are much higher in the industrial areas in comparison with urban areas. Based on diagnostic ratios, pyrogenic activities were dominant sources of PAHs pollution in sediments comparing petroleum sources. The toxic equivalent concentrations (TEQ Carc) of PAHs ranged from 172 to 2,235 ng TEQ/g with mean value of 997.9. Toxicity levels were evaluated using sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) and toxic equivalent factors. Samples were collected from industrial and urban stations in Asaluyeh shores. According to SQGs, ΣPAHs concentrations in sediments of urban areas were below the ERL (effects range low), but the industrial samples had ΣPAHs concentrations between ERL and ERM (effects range median). Furthermore, ΣHPAHs (heavy PAHs) and some individual PAHs in some industrial stations exceeded ERM, indicating adverse ecological risk effects frequently occur. Findings demonstrate that the surface sediment from Asaluyeh shore is highly to very highly contaminated with PAHs.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments of Zhelin Bay, the largest mariculture base on the eastern Guangdong coast, South China: Characterization and risk implications

We investigated distribution, sources, and potential risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the surface sediments from the largest mariculture base in the eastern part of the province of Guangdong in southern China. Total concentrations of ∑PAHs were 29.38–815.46ng/g (dry weight), with a mean of 421.48ng/g. The composition of PAHs was characterized by an abundance of low molecular weight PAHs (2–3 benzenoid ring), and Phenanthrene (PHE), Anthracene (AN) and Fluoranthene (FA) were the predominant constituents. PAHs in this area appear to have mainly originated from petroleum sources and the combustion of grass, wood, and coal. PAHs in surface sediments of Zhelin Bay had a 9% incidence of causing adverse biological effects on aquatic organisms, according to the mean effects range–median quotient.

Baseline of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the surface sediment and sea cucumbers (Holothuria leucospilota and Stichopus hermanni) in the northern parts of Persian Gulf

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in the surface sediments and in the sea cucumbers (Holothuria leucospilota and Stichopus hermanni) from around six Islands in the northern parts of Persian Gulf. The ranges of the average concentrations of PAHs in surface sediments, H. leucospilota and S. hermanni were 10.33–186.16ngg−1 dw, 12.49–505.44ngg−1 dw and 8.08–389.39ngg−1 dw, respectively. The spatial distribution of PAHs reveals that pollutant concentration is relatively higher at the western parts of Persian Gulf. International sedimentary quality guidelines (TEL-PEL) indicated a low probability of harmful effects to benthic organisms. PAH source identification showed that the PAHs in the sediments come from pyrogenic and mixed origin.

Distribution, sources and ecological risk assessment of PAHs in surface sediments from the Luan River Estuary, China

The distribution, sources and risk assessment of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) of surface sediments in the Luan River Estuary, China, have been investigated in the research. The results indicated that the total concentrations of 16 PAHs in surface sediments of the Luan River Estuary ranged from 5.1 to 545.1ngg−1dw with a mean value of 120.8ngg−1dw, which is relatively low in comparison with other estuaries around the world. The PAHs in the study area were mainly originated from pyrogenic sources. Besides, PAHs may be contaminated by petrogenic PAHs as indicated by the selected ratios of PAHs, the 2-tailed Pearson correlation analysis and principal components analysis at different sites. The result of the ecological risk assessment shows little negative effect for most individual PAHs in surface sediments of the Luan River Estuary, China.
