Health risk assessment and development of human health ambient water quality criteria for PCBs in Taihu Basin, China

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of typical persistent organic pollutants (POPs) with carcinogenicity and extensively found in diverse environmental mediums. The Taihu Basin is one of the most economically developed regions in China, and it has also caused a lot of historical legacy and unconscious emissions of PCBs, posing a threat to the health of people in the region. This study counted the concentrations of PCBs in five environmental media (water, soil, air, dust, and food) in the Taihu Basin from 2000 to 2020 and used Monte Carlo simulation to simulate the multi-channel exposure of PCBs in people of different ages (children, teenagers, and adults), and evaluated their noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks. Finally, the human health ambient water quality standards (AWQC) for PCBs were obtained using regional exposure parameters and bioaccumulation factors. The results showed that the pollution of PCBs in the Taihu Basin was relatively serious in China. The concentration of PCBs in dust is higher than other environmental media. And exposure to water and food is the main exposure pathway for PCBs in the population of the region. Besides, PCBs pose no noncarcinogenic risk to people in this region, but their carcinogenic risk to residents exceeds the safety threshold. Among the three population groups, adults have the highest risk of cancer, and prevention measures need to be taken by controlling the intake of related foods and the concentration of PCBs in water. The following human health AWQC values of the PCBs in Taihu Basin is 3.2 × 10−9 mg/L.

The Spatial Distribution and Potential Risk Assessment of POPs in Farmland around a Typical E-Waste Dismantling Site.

Pollution from electronic-waste (E-waste) dismantling is of great concern. This study investigated the concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in 253 cropland soil samples around an abandoned E-waste dismantling site in Taizhou city, Zhejiang province in China, using an analytical method which simultaneously extracted, purified and determined the identity and quantity of the three types of persistent organic pollutants. Meanwhile, their spatial distributions, pollution characteristics, and risk assessments were further analyzed. Total PCBs in the test soils ranged from below method detection limits (ND) to 2985.25μgkg-1 on a dry weight basis (d.w.), and the spatial distribution indicated a "hot spot" of PCBs pollution in the study area. The PAHs were detected in all samples with total concentrations ranging from 4.99 to 2723.06μgkg-1d.w. The distribution of PBDEs showed the pollution characteristics of "family-run workshops", with a total content range of ND ~ 899.34μgkg-1d.w., of which BDE209 was typically the dominant congener, accounting for 74.05% of the total PBDEs content in the test soils, with the highest content reaching 857.72μgkg-1d.w. Results showed that the ecological and lifetime carcinogenic risks of PCBs and PAHs were low in the study area, but the health risk caused by oral ingestion and dermal contact accounted for the highest proportion of the total exposure risks, while inhalation could be ignored. PBDEs in soils of the study area were a potential chronic non-carcinogenic risk, particularly for children. Therefore, in order to protect human health and environment, it is necessary to regulate the management of E-waste dismantling sites and pollution control.

A fish-parasite sentinel system in an assessment of the spatial distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls

The spatial distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), in the Zemplínska Šírava water reservoir and adjacent tributaries in the Bodrog River Basin were investigated using a fish-parasite sentinel system. PCB concentrations were detected in various fish matrices (dorsal and abdominal muscles, liver and intestine) of the Wels catfish (Silurus glanis) and its intestinal cestode Glanitaenia osculata. PCB concentrations in the fish from the water reservoir, located closest to the chemical plant, the primary source of the PCB pollution, were the highest. The analysis of these contaminants in catfish matrices showed the highest concentrations in the abdominal muscle, followed by the dorsal muscle, liver and intestine. Concentrations of ∑PCBs exceeding the limits for food set by European regulations were measured in the muscle tissue of catfish at all sites, even in the Bodrog River, 60 km away from the primary source of contamination, posing a significant risk to humans in the Zemplín region. For the first time, the ability of cestode G. osculata to accumulate higher amounts of PCBs compared to fish matrices has been demonstrated. Due to the enormous ability of the parasites to accumulate PCBs, we recommend this approach for alternative biomonitoring of PCBs in contaminated aquatic environments.

Occurrence of OCPs & PCBs and their effects on multitrophic biological communities in riparian groundwater of the Beiluo River, China

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) may exert adverse effects on human and ecosystem health. However, as an ecologically fragile zone with strong interaction between river and groundwater, the POPs pollution in the riparian zone has received little attention. The goal of this research is to examine the concentrations, spatial distribution, potential ecological risks, and biological effects of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the riparian groundwater of the Beiluo River, China. The results showed that the pollution level and ecological risk of OCPs in riparian groundwater of the Beiluo River were higher than PCBs. The presence of PCBs (Penta-CBs, Hexa-CBs) and CHLs, respectively, may have reduced the richness of bacteria (Firmicutes) and fungi (Ascomycota). Furthermore, the richness and Shannon’s diversity index of algae (Chrysophyceae and Bacillariophyta) decreased, which could be linked to the presence of OCPs (DDTs, CHLs, DRINs), and PCBs (Penta-CBs, Hepta-CBs), while for metazoans (Arthropoda) the tendency was reversed, presumably as a result of SULPHs pollution. In the network analysis, core species belonging to bacteria (Proteobacteria), fungi (Ascomycota), and algae (Bacillariophyta) played essential roles in maintaining community function. Burkholderiaceae and Bradyrhizobium can be considered biological indicators of PCBs pollution in the Beiluo River. Note that the core species of interaction network, playing a fundamental role in community interactions, are strongly affected by POPs pollutants. This work provides insights into the functions of multitrophic biological communities in maintaining the stability of riparian ecosystems through the response of core species to riparian groundwater POPs contamination.

Effective degradation of 2,4,4′-trichlorodiphenyl by Fe3C@Fe-800 activated peroxymonosulfate: Superoxide radical and singlet oxygen-dominated advanced oxidation process

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) degradation by peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation through •OH and SO4•– radical oxidation process was the effective technology in the last decades; however, there were few research focusing on removing PCBs by O2•– and 1O2 induced by PMS activation. In this work, 90.86% of 2,4,4-trichlorodiphenyl (PCB 28) was degraded by 0.3 g/L Fe3C@Fe-800 activated 0.5 mM PMS system under the synergistic action of O2•– and 1O2. The structures of Fe3C@Fe-800 were identified by Scanning electron microscope (SEM), High resolution-transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Raman spectra and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements and quenching tests verified that O2•– and 1O2 were the primary reactive species in Fe3C@Fe-800/PMS/PCB 28 ternary reaction system. Density functional theory (DFT), Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and chronoamperometry test revealed that electron-deficient Fe atoms on Fe3C were the main active sites in Fe3C@Fe-800 for PMS activation to generate 1O2. Unlike the reported •OH and SO4•– mediated degradation induced by the iron-based catalyst, both O2•– and 1O2 contributed to PCB 28 degradation： nucleophilic dichlorination reaction by O2•- and then ring-open oxidation process by 1O2. Fe3C@Fe-800/PMS system had excellent catalytic performance under different reaction conditions and possessed desirable inorganic salt and natural organic matter resistance. This work elucidated the important role of Fe3C in PMS activation to generate O2•- and 1O2 for PCB 28 decontamination by nonradical way and provided a clue to design rationally catalysts in polychlorinated biphenyl pollution remediation.

Occurrence, Potential Risk Assessment, and Source Apportionment of Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Water from Beiluo River

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are highly hazardous, persistent, and bioaccumulative substances that pose a threat to water quality in a number of locations, including the Beiluo River in Shaanxi Province, China. However, little is known about the contribution of PCBs to the Beiluo River. In this study, in order to look into the impact of sources on the water of the Beiluo River, the discovered PCB congeners in water were examined on a regional scale. The concentration of PCBs in water across Beiluo River was in the range from 0.065 to 1.92 ng L−1, and the average concentration was 0.37 ng L−1. The main PCB sources in the Beiluo River waterbody were found using positive matrix factorization (PMF). Source apportionment results indicated that the PCB pollution of the Beiluo River was mostly caused by industrial emissions, technical PCB mixtures, and coal and wood combustion. According to current ecological risk assessment guidelines, the PCB concentrations found in this study may have a negative impact on biological systems. Overall, the new information about the presence of several PCBs in the water of the Beiluo River justifies the need for urgent management actions, as well as long-term monitoring efforts, to protect ecosystems. Future investigations of these chemicals in China may use the conclusions of this first ecological risk level assessment on the PCB contamination in the waterbody of the Beiluo River as a guide.

Chronology of PAH and PCB pollution using sediment core in the Golden Horn estuary (Sea of Marmara)

The sources and depositional history of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 18 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) congeners in the Golden Horn estuary (İstanbul) were investigated using a dated sediment core for the period between 1880 and 2012. The concentrations of PAHs and PCBs were calculated for every 4 cm slices of the sediment core and ranged from 1203.5 to 3441.4 ng/g and 5.4 to 41.4 ng/g, respectively. The diagnostic ratios indicated that the maximum PAH values correspondence to combustion after a crude oil-carrying Romanian tanker (Independenta) accident in the İstanbul Strait in 1979. The historical deposition of PAHs and PCBs in the Golden Horn was influenced by municipal effluent and heavy industrial dischargers approximately 50 years. When the Silahtarağa thermal power plant (TPP) was operating, PCB pollution rose; however, after a thorough rehabilitation effort and the outlawing of PCB use in the 1990s, pollution levels significantly tended to decrease.

Evolution of pace-of-life syndrome under conditions of maternal PCB contamination and global warming in early life stages of cold stenothermic fish (Arctic char)

The end of the 20th century was characterised by rapid modifications of ecosystem functioning under different pressures (such as eutrophication and toxic pollution). Increasing temperatures in the context of global warming could have indirect consequences, such as increased bioavailability of hydrophobic organic pollutants amongst aquatic species. According to the “pace-of-life syndrome” (POLS) theory, these stressors could lead to covariations in many life traits. Lake Bourget is the largest natural lake in France and has been highly polluted from the fifties to the eighties both with a high load of nutrients (wastewater discharge) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (industrial effluent discharge). Despite improvements in water quality since the 21st century, PCB levels are still higher than the United States Environmental Protection Agency cut-off for wildlife protection. The population of Arctic char, a cold stenothermic salmonid, has remained low in Lake Bourget for the last ten years despite restocking efforts and complete re-oligotrophication. We hypothesised that PCB pollution can affect the Arctic char population and that the increase in water temperature could magnify the effects of PCB. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of maternal PCB contamination on offspring using a multiparametric and multiscale approach. Female Arctic char were contaminated with PCB before spawning, and each fertilised spawn was incubated at two temperatures (4 and 8.5 °C). The results showed that co-exposure to increased temperature and maternal PCB contamination influenced biodemographic, physiological, and behavioural parameters. The effects were highly dependant on the developmental stage. Based on the POLS theory, a continuum of life traits that may reflect potential physiological and behavioural modifications in response to these concurrent stressors is highlighted

Remediation of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) through Bio and Phytoremediation in the Environment: A Review Study

One of the persistent organic pollutants (POPs) utilized globally between the 1930s and 1980s was polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Even though their usage has been severely constrained, a lot of PCBs are still present in the environment, including soils and air. This local, national, international and governmental organizations regarding polychlorinated biphenyls and how can resolve and treat the problem sustainably. This can be achieved if seriously working on degrading persistent organic pollutants, especially polychlorinated biphenyls biologically via thorough research and sound implementation. The methods opted for remediation by the use of choosing suitable types of microorganisms and plants. These methods are practically active for the identification of the source, concentration level and effects on the ecosystem. It would help in developing appropriate strategy and data generation in formulating the inventories for the management of polychlorinated biphenyls in the future. It is also noted through numerous research that polychlorinated biphenyls are also found in human blood commonly analyzed by indicator congeners such as PCB 138,153, 180, and in air and soil markers of PCBs pollution include PCB congeners 28, 52,101,138,153 and 180 as well. The methods and mechanisms described for degrading the persistent pollutant in this research review the solutions for mitigating PCB pollution in an environment. The best option is to strictly ban it in Pakistan or weightage its usage with its multiple benefits and disadvantages. Promote biological treatment if the payback is healthy and environmentally sustainable.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls in the Snow Cover of South-Eastern Kazakhstan

The presence of large sources of environmental pollution due to persistent organic pollutants (POPs), in particular, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), in Kazakhstan necessitates the assessment of pollution as a result of these toxicants. For this purpose, we chose snow cover as an indicator for assessing pollution status in the study area. An assessment of the PCB accumulation level included in the list of POPs was carried out for a snow cover (SC) study in south-east Kazakhstan. The content of PCBs with a wide congener composition was determined using the chromatographic analysis method. During the winter periods of 2014, 2015, 2018–2020 and 2021, the SC pollution of the study area from up to 25 individual PCB congeners was identified. These congeners included highly toxic dioxin-like congener PCBs 105; 108; 114; 118 and “marker” PCBs 52; 101; 138; 153. These congeners were mainly found in snow samples with a wide range of PCB congener compositions. The main PCB pollution sources were indicated. The analysis of the obtained results and structure of the congener composition of PCBs show that the SC contamination in this territory occurs under the influence of local and regional sources.

Spatial distribution and ecological risks of polychlorinated biphenyls in a river basin affected by traditional and emerging electronic waste recycling in South China

With development of e-waste related legislation in China, formal recycling activities are designated in some areas while informal ones are illegally transferred to emerging areas to avoid supervision. However, the resulting environmental impact and ecological risks are not clear. Here, we investigated the discharge of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to soil and aquatic environments by e-waste recycling activities in the Lian River Basin, China. The study area included a designated industrial park in the traditional e-waste recycling area (Guiyu, known as the world's largest e-waste center), several emerging informal recycling zones, and their surrounding areas and coastal area. A total of 27 PCBs were analyzed, and the highest concentration was found in an emerging site for soil (354 ng g−1) and in a traditional site for sediment (1350 ng g‐−1) respectively. The pollution levels were significantly higher in both the traditional and emerging recycling areas than in their respective upstream countryside areas (p = 0.0356 and 0.0179, respectively). Source analysis revealed that the traditional and emerging areas had similar PCB sources mainly associated with three PCB technical mixtures manufactured in Japan (KC600) and the USA (Aroclor 1260 and Aroclor 1262). The PCB pollution in their downstream areas including the coastal area was evidently affected by the formal and informal recycling activities through river runoff. The ecological risk assessments showed that PCBs in soils and sediments in the Lian River Basin could cause adverse ecotoxicological consequences to humans and aquatic organisms.

Elevated mercury and PCB concentrations in Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma) collected near a formerly used defense site on Sivuqaq, Alaska

Environmental pollution causes adverse health effects in many organisms and contributes to health disparities for Arctic communities that depend on subsistence foods, including the Yupik residents of Sivuqaq (St. Lawrence Island), Alaska. Sivuqaq's proximity to Russia made it a strategic location for U.S. military defense sites during the Cold War. Two radar surveillance stations were installed on Sivuqaq, including at the Northeast Cape. High levels of persistent organic pollutants and toxic metals continue to leach from the Northeast Cape formerly used defense (FUD) site despite remediation efforts. We quantified total mercury (Hg) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations, and carbon and nitrogen stable isotope signatures, in skin and muscle samples from Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma), an important subsistence species. We found that Hg and PCB concentrations significantly differed across locations, with the highest concentrations found in fish collected near the FUD site. We found that 89% of fish collected from near the FUD site had Hg concentrations that exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) unlimited Hg-contaminated fish consumption screening level for subsistence fishers (0.049 μg/g). All fish sampled near the FUD site exceeded the EPA's PCB guidelines for cancer risk for unrestricted human consumption (0.0015 μg/g ww). Both Hg and PCB concentrations had a significant negative correlation with δ13C when sites receiving input from the FUD site were included in the analysis, but these relationships were insignificant when input sites were excluded. δ15N had a significant negative correlation with Hg concentration, but not with PCB concentration. These results suggest that the Northeast Cape FUD site remains a point source of Hg and PCB pollution and contributes to higher concentrations in resident fish, including subsistence species. Moreover, elevated Hg and PCB levels in fish near the FUD site may pose a health risk for Sivuqaq residents.

Distribution Characteristics and Risk Assessment of 209 Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Dongting Lake and the Inflow Rivers

In order to fully understand the pollution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in Dongting Lake, 209 PCB congeners were quantitatively detected and analyzed by isotope-dilution high-resolution mass spectrometry in 21 surface water sampling sites of Dongting Lake and the inflow rivers of the lake. The results showed that a total of 50 PCB congeners were detected in the study area. The ρ(ΣPCBs) ranged from 0.077 to 10 ng·L-1, with an average concentration of 2.7 ng·L-1 and a median concentration of 1.9 ng·L-1. The order of contamination concentrations were as follows:the inflow rivers of the lake > lake region > outlet. Compared with the reports of domestic and foreign studies, PCB pollution in Dongting Lake is at a low level. The main pollutants in the surface water were dichlorobiphenyls and tri- and tetrachlorobiphenyls, with relative abundances of 67%, 14%, and 16%, respectively. PCB11, PCB17, PCB18, PCB20+33, PCB28, PCB47+75, PCB52, and PCB68 were the most widely distributed and detected in more than 80% of samples. Among them, ρ(PCB11) was the highest, with an average concentration of 1.6 ng·L-1, accounting for 59% of ρ(ΣPCBs), from the domestic organic pigment production process of unintentional emissions. Atmospheric transport deposition and historical residue were the main sources of PCBs in water. According to the toxicity equivalent factor method, the ecological toxicity risk of the study area was evaluated, and the results showed that the TEQ in the water was far lower than the relevant standard limit, indicating that the pollution of PCBs in the surface water of Dongting Lake and the inflow rivers would not cause harm to exposed organisms.

Trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls in the surface sediments from Sanya River, China: Distribution, sources and ecological risk

The urban inland river ecosystems are now facing comprehensive pollution and governance pressures. Up to now, few works related to the multiple pollution assessment of trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) for the urban inland river sediments have been reported in China. Our study investigated the spatial distribution, ecological risk and potential sources of trace metals, PAHs and PCBs in surface sediment collected from 20 sampling sites of Sanya River, Hainan Province, China. The pollution status and potential ecological risk of trace metals were evaluated using the contamination indexes including geoaccumulation index (Igeo), individual potential ecological risk (Eri), potential ecological risk index (RI) and pollution load index (PLI). Considering the carcinogenicity and toxicity of PAHs and PCBs to human health and the ecological environment, we also analyzed the distributions, sources and adverse biological effects of PAHs and PCBs according to the sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), principal component analysis (PCA) and other source analysis. This study revealed that the surface sediments in Sanya River were extremely slight pollution and showed a very low ecological risk according to Igeo, Eri, PLI and RI results for trace metals. Besides, PAHs and PCBs pollution detected may not pose considerable adverse biological effect to ecological environment in a foreseeable period on the basis of comprehensive research results. The overall surface sediments quality of the Sanya River not seem to pose a serious pollution and ecological risk based on the evaluation results of multiple pollution factors. The study provided detailed information on the multiple pollution status and location of surface sediments, one of the key environmental indicators of international tourism cities, in the Sanya River, which would be useful for the water quality improvement of Sanya River and the environmental remediation of the other coastal ecosystems from different regions.

Forty years studies on polychlorinated biphenyls pollution, food safety, health risk, and human health in an e-waste recycling area from Taizhou city, China: a review.

E-waste generation has become a serious environmental challenge worldwide. Taizhou of Zhejiang Province, situated on the southeast coastline of China, has been one of the major e-waste dismantling areas in China for the last 40years. In this review, we focused on the polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) trends in environmental compartments, burden and impact to humans, food safety, and health risk assessment from Taizhou, China. The review suggested that PCBs showed dynamic trends in air, soil, water, biodiversity, and sediments. Soils and fish samples indicated higher levels of PCBs than sediments, air, water, and food items. PCB levels decreased in soils with the passage of time. Agriculture soils near the e-waste recycling sites showed more levels of total PCBs than industrial soils and urban soils. Dioxin-like PCB levels were higher in humans near Taizhou, suggesting that e-waste pollution could influence humans. Compared with large-scale plants, simple household workshops contributed more pollution of PCBs to the environment. Pollution index, hazard quotient, and daily intake were higher for PCBs, suggesting Taizhou should be given priority to manage the e-waste pollution. The elevated body burden may have health implications for the next generation. The areas with stricter control measures, strengthened laws and regulations, and more environmentally friendly techniques indicated reduced levels of PCBs. For environment protection and health safety, proper e-waste dismantling techniques, environmentally sound management, awareness, and regular monitoring are very important.

Historic changes of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in juvenile and adult cetaceans from the Pearl River estuary from 2003 to 2020

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), as a type of legacy persistent organic pollutants, pose significant health threats to wildlife. However, long-term residue changes and profiles of PCBs in cetaceans have not been extensively studied in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), an important marine mammal area in China. Here, the body burdens, spatiotemporal trends, and health risks of 21 chlorobiphenyl congeners (∑21CBs) were analyzed in blubber samples collected from twelve cetacean species (n = 172) in the PRE from 2003 to 2020. Our results revealed medium levels of PCBs (316–96,233 ng g−1 lipid) compared to those reported for cetaceans elsewhere (70–370,000 ng g−1 lipid). Clear differences in PCB distribution patterns between inshore and offshore cetaceans and between odontocetes and mysticetes were also found. Both the coastal Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) and Indo-Pacific finless porpoises (Neophocaena phocaenoides) displayed similarly fine-scale spatial distribution patterns of PCBs, suggesting that the two cetaceans could serve as bioindicators of PCB pollution in the PRE. Additionally, both cetaceans exhibited decreasing trends in their blubber PCB concentrations over the past 20 years, likely reflecting the effective regulation of PCBs in the PRE Delta. Nevertheless, the relatively high and stable PCB-toxic equivalent (TEQ) levels detected in calf humpback dolphins during the sampling period suggested that the calves are still under the stresses of high PCB-related health risks. Our results highlight the need for more efforts to eliminate PCB contamination to prevent these cetaceans from continuous population decline and further extinction.

Transformers polychlorinated biphenyls analysis and waste management in gas companies, case study: Iran

ABSTRACT Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are categorised as a type of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). In developing countries, transformer oils are the major sources of PCB release to the environment. . This study examined the pollution of PCBs from transformers of gas company cathodic protection stations in Qom province, during 2011. The PCBs were measured using the electrochemical method. According to the results, the PCBs concentration of transformers oil was ranged between 0 and 958 ppm. Most stations PCBs concentrations (over 60%) were higher than recommended level (50ppm) enacted by theDepartment of Environment (DOE) of Iran. The results showed that among all cathodic protection stations; 10.4% were in a safe level, 29.2% in precaution level, and 60.4% in dangerous level. ANOVA test presented the significant difference between levels of the PCBs in different stations (P < 0.05). It is recommended that proper and safe waste management strategies for the exposure, transportation, and storage for this type of waste be taken into account.

Reconstruction of temporal and spatial trends of atmospheric pollution based on polychlorinated biphenyls concentration changes in ombrotrophic bogs

To reconstruct the deposition rate of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in different historical periods and to examine the temporal and spatial trend of PCBs pollution, we analyzed the changes of PCBs concentration and deposition rate in peat cores and lake sediments, and evaluated the suitability of peat cores and lake sediments for studying PCBs deposition trend. Through the dating analysis of all samples, we found that peat bog could well record the historical sedimentation of PCBs. PCBs did not degrade in peat, and it was thus feasible to use peatland to examine the settlement of PCBs. In this study, the reconstruction time of ∑11PCBs in peat was from the beginning of 19th century to the beginning of 21st century. The mean inventory of ∑11PCBs in three peat cores of each bog changed between (37.0±5.4) and (47.2 ±27.8) μg·m-2, with the standard deviation between 14.9% and 58.9%. The highest concentration of ∑11PCBs was 6.8 ng·g-1DW, while the maximum deposition rate of reconstructed PCBs was up to 989.7 ng·m-2·a-1. The trend of deposition rate was first increasing and then decreasing. After the year 1980, the deposition rate was substantially decreasing, which was consistent with the prohibition of PCBs production in the United States in 1979. Meanwhile, the analysis of sediment samples in the lake near bog showed that concentration and maximum deposition rate of the lake sediment were comparable to those of the nearby bog. The concentrations of Di- to Hepta-PCB congeners were evenly distributed along the sediment profile. Therefore, lake sediments could not be used to analyze the historical sedimentary model of low order PCBs. This study reconstructed temporal and spatial variation of PCBs in atmospheric environment in different historical periods, which could provide basic data for the evaluation of regional environmental quality.

Residual Characteristics and Health Assessment Analysis of OCPs and PCBs in Karst Groundwater

Residual levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in karst groundwater in Nanshan Laolongdong were measured using a gas chromatograph equipped with a micro-63Ni electron capture detector to determine the residual characteristics including concentration, distribution, and source of OCPs and PCBs. Results revealed that the total concentration range of OCPs was 34.8-623.2 ng·L-1, and the mean value was 215.6 ng·L-1, among which the total concentration ranges of HCHs, DDTs, and other OCPs were 8.2-23.6, 4.5-363.7, and 22.2-235.9 ng·L-1, respectively, and the mean values were 15.9, 104.5, and 95.3 ng·L-1; the total concentration range of PCBs was 6.0-40.7 ng·L-1, and the mean value was 16.8 ng·L-1. Overall, the pollution of OCPs and PCBs was above average; the results of multiple comparisons revealed that statistically significant differences occurred in the concentration of some OCPs and PCBs. The pollution levels in the water of each sampling point in the study area were quite different; however, the seasonal distribution of OCPs and PCBs was relatively uniform. Source analyses revealed that HCHs' source was the input of lindane in the surrounding environment, DDTs recently originated from illegal use of industrial DDT, other OCPs originated from atmospheric deposition and agricultural input, and PCBs' sources included both historical remains and enterprise production processes. The results of Pearson correlation analyses revealed that some organo-halogen pollutants were homologous or had similar sources and decomposition mechanisms. According to health risk assessment model, drinking water in the study area would not cause obvious harm to human health, but children were more sensitive to pollutants than adults.

Sources and Health Risks of Atmospheric Polychlorinated Biphenyls in an Urban/Industrial Areas, Northwest China

A passive air sampler was used to monitor the concentration and contamination profile of 18 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the atmosphere over the urban and industrial area of Gaolan, a city in northwest China, during the non-heating and heating seasons of 2018, and the sources, pollutant transport, and the health risks of PCB exposure were analyzed and assessed using principle component analysis, trajectory modeling, and inhalation exposure modeling. The atmospheric concentration in the study area ranged from 110.2 to 429.9 pg·m-3, and the highest average concentration was found at the industrial estate. Tetra-PCBs and penta-PCBs were the dominant homologue groups, and the percentage of tetra-PCBs increased in the heating season. Combustion and industrial thermal processes, PCB-containing electrical equipment, and the combined source of volatilization from paint, combustion, and industrial thermal processes were considered to be the main sources, and the source of combustion and industrial thermal processes contributed the largest proportion of PCBs at 40.8%. Largely, the emission of UP-PCBs would significantly influence PCB pollution in the study area. Trajectory analysis results illustrated that PCBs emitted from sources in the study area would be transmitted to Lanzhou City atmospherically; local pollution would be the main source of PCBs contamination in the study area during the non-heating season, while the atmospheric input of PCBs transmitted from the northwest region would be another source during the heating season. Health risk analysis showed that the non-cancer risk of PCBs exposure was low in all age groups; however, lifetime cancer risks exceeded 10-6. PCBs emitted from combustion and industrial thermal processes sources would have a strong impact on resident exposure to PCBs, and adverse health effects would be caused due to long-term inhalation exposure of the inhabitants to PCBs contamination in the study area.
