Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediments and fish from dredged tributaries and creeks of river Ethiope, South-South, Nigeria: sources, risk assessment and bioaccumulation

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants that are ubiquitous in nature. In this study, the levels of PCBs were evaluated in sediments and fish samples obtained from dredged tributaries and creeks of River Ethiope. The work also assessed the possible relationship between the parameters and risks posed by polychlorinated biphenyls via several pollution indices. The mean concentrations of \sum PCBs on the sediments spanned from 645 – 3,977 µg/kg (wet season) to 252 – 1,219 µg/kg (dry season) dry weight. The concentrations of PCBs in fishes were 1,688 µg/kg (wet season) and 557 µg/kg (dry season). Higher bioaccumulation factors were observed with lower molecular weight PCBs than the higher ones (9 – Hexa – PCB, 8- Tetra- PCB). The results of the ecological risk (160 \leq Eri < 320), and human health risk (\geq 10-4 to 10-3-\leq 10-6), showed moderately to very high contamination and also moderately to very high cancer risk for children and adults. The strong positive correlation between PCB-114 and PCB-77, PCB-81, PCB-105 (r2 = 1.00, 0.99 & 1.00, p < 0.01) and the risks assessment values which ranged from 6.10 × 10-3 to 1.47 × 10-2 for children and 6.30 × 10-4 to 1.11 × 10-3 for adults (wet season), 1.04 × 10-3 to 2.99 × 10-2 for children and 7.80 × 10-5 to 5.61 × 10-1 for adults (dry season), showed rarely to adversely high potential ecological risk, biological effect and human health risk across the environment. The data show that higher levels of PCBs were observed in sediments and fish samples when compared with available standards. Considering the ILCR, hazard index, toxic equivalent, the sediments and fish obtained from these sites would be considered risky for humans. Dredging activities are majorly responsible for the high levels of PCBs across the sites. These have contributed significantly to the environmental status of the studied area.

Identification of Species-Specific Prey Uptake and Biotransformation of Chiral Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in Riparian and Aquatic Food Webs.

The atropisomeric enrichment of chiral polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can trace the movement of PCBs through food webs, but it is a challenge to elucidate the prey uptake and stereoselective biotransformation of PCBs in different species. The present study investigated the concentrations and enantiomer fractions (EFs) of chiral PCBs in invertebrates, fishes, amphibians, and birds. Chiral PCB signature was estimated in total prey for different predators based on quantitative prey sources. The nonracemic PCBs in snakehead (Ophiocephalus argus) were mainly from prey. EFs of PCBs in amphibians and birds were mainly influenced by biotransformation, which showed enrichment of (+)-CBs 132 and 135/144 and different enantiomers of CBs 95 and 139/149. Biomagnification factors (BMFs) of chiral PCBs were higher than 1 for amphibians and passerine birds and lower than 1 for kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) and snakehead. BMFs were significantly correlated with EFs of chiral PCBs in predators and indicative of atropisomeric enrichment of PCBs across different species. Trophic magnification factors (TMFs) were higher in the riparian food web than in the aquatic food web because of the high metabolism capacity of chiral PCBs in aquatic predators. The results highlight the influences of species-specific prey sources and biotransformation on the trophic dynamics of chiral PCBs.

DIOXINS, FURANS AND PCBS IN IMPORTED MARINE FISH – CONSUMER EXPOSURE

Background. Dietary guidelines recommend that fish should be consumed at least twice a week due to valuable nutrients they contain, like long-chain, polyunsaturated fatty acids, macro- and microelements, fat-soluble vitamins (mainly D3), amino acids and easily digestible protein. Apart from the benefits, fish consumption becomes a source of toxic compounds including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The aim of our research was to investigate the levels of PCDD, PCDF and PCB in marine fish imported to Poland and assess the risk for consumers, taking into account the tolerable weekly intake (TWI) of 2 pg WHO TEQ/kg body weight (b.w.). Six fish species were investigated: turbot, mackerel, Atlantic salmon, tuna, pollock and hake. The method employed for the research was isotope dilution technique with high resolution gas chromatography coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC-HRMS). Results and conclusions. The highest concentrations for the sum of PCDD/F/dl-PCB were determined in turbot muscles 1.25 pg WHO-TEQ/g of fresh weight (f.w.) and the lowest in pollock, hake and tuna muscles 0.02, 0.03, 0.04 pg WHO-TEQ/g f.w. respectively. Although the tested fish contained low PCDD/F/PCB concentrations compared to the permissible limits, the consumption of the recommended two portions of the most contaminated species resulted in TWI being exceeded even six times for children and two times for adults. Imported turbot, salmon and mackerel are significant sources of dioxins and PCBs for fish consumer.

Contaminants in fish from U.S. rivers: Probability-based national assessments

Most fish consumption advisories in the United States (U.S.) are issued for mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and recently per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have become a contaminant group that warrants fish consumption advice. An unequal probability survey design was developed to allow a comprehensive characterization of mercury, PCB, and PFAS contamination in fish from U.S. rivers on a national scale. During 2013–14 and 2018–19, fish fillet samples were collected from 353 and 290 river sites, respectively, selected randomly from the target population of rivers (≥5th order in size) in the conterminous U.S. These comprised nationally representative samples, with results extrapolated to chemical-specific sampled populations of 48,826–79,448 river kilometers (km) in 2013–14 and 66,142 river km in 2018–19. National distribution estimates were developed for total mercury, all 209 PCB congeners, and up to 33 PFAS (including perfluorooctane sulfonate or PFOS) in river fish. All fillet tissue samples contained detectable levels of mercury and PCBs. One or more PFAS were detected in 99.7 % and 95.2 % of the fillet samples from fish collected in 2013–14 and 2018–19, respectively. Fish tissue screening levels applied to national contaminant probability distributions allowed an estimation of the percentage of the sampled population of river lengths that contained fish with fillet concentrations above a level protective of human health. Fish tissue screening level exceedances for an average level of fish consumption ranged from 23.5 % to 26.0 % for mercury, 17.3 % to 51.6 % for PCBs, and 0.7 % to 9.1 % for PFOS.

Deep-sea ecosystems play a key role in the cycling and vertical transfer of matter and energy in oceans. Although the contamination of deep-sea demersal and benthic organisms by persistent organic pollutants has been proven, deep pelagic species have been far less studied. To fill these gaps, we studied the occurrence of a large variety of hydrophobic organic contaminants including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), legacy and alternative brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in crustaceans and fish species collected in the Bay of Biscay, northeast Atlantic. The results highlighted the global predominance of PCBs in fish, followed by OCPs, PFASs and PBDEs, with highly variable concentrations among species. Most of the chlorinated or brominated contaminants showed increasing concentrations with increasing δ15N values, while most PFASs showed inverse trends. The contaminant profiles and diagnostic ratios revealed species-specific metabolic capacities and peculiar contribution of highly-brominated BFRs.

Sources of polychlorinated biphenyls to Upper Hudson River fish post-dredging

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic chemicals that are the dominant contaminant in the Upper Hudson River (UHR) in New York State where two General Electric (GE) plants historically discharged PCBs to the river. Portions of the UHR were dredged from 2009 to 2015 to address PCB contamination. In 2017, the first post-dredging survey of yearling feeder fish and sediment PCB contamination was conducted to establish a baseline for the recovery of the river. Prior analysis of the sediment data from the 2017 survey indicated that ∼2% of the PCBs in the surface sediment were higher in molecular weight than the formulation used by GE and therefore arose from non-GE sources. In this work, the fish PCB data from the 2017 survey were analyzed using Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). Empirical Bayesian Kriging (EBK) was used to estimate PCB concentrations in the sediment at the locations where fish were collected. The results suggest that PCBs that are the products of microbial dechlorination bioaccumulate in the fish and represent 7% of the PCB mass in the fish data set. Further, the results suggest that about 13% of the PCBs in the fish may have come from non-GE sources. This is higher than the percentage of non-GE PCBs in the sediment, but can be explained by the higher molecular weight of the non-GE mixture which causes it to bioaccumulate more effectively than GE PCBs. Concentrations of the non-GE PCBs averaged about 240 ppb wet weight (whole body) in yearling feeder fish. The remedial goals range from 50 to 400 ppb ww in fillet for fish including piscivorous species that are likely to have higher PCB concentrations than feeder fish.

Application of the QuEChERS method for the determination of pesticides, PAHs and PCBs in fish in Senegal

Pollution of water by persistent organic pollutants is well described; however, little is known about the accumulation of these pollutants by aquatic organisms. For this reason, a method based on QuEChERS extraction and gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) was developed for the determination of pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the muscles of five fish species from the bay of Soumbedioune (Dakar, Senegal). This method shows good recoveries of extraction (68.2-98.1% for pesticides, 83.87-98.10% for PAHs and 81.30-98.15% for PCBs), precision (% RSD ≤ 1%), sensitivity (LODs between 0.001 and 0.079 ng g−1), linearity (R2 ≥ 0.99) and repeatability and reproducibility, evaluated for three concentration levels (10 ng g−1, 200 ng g−1 and 500 ng g−1), ≤ 15% for the majority of pollutants under study except for alachlor, atrazine, acetochlor, dicofol, deltamethrin and dichlorvos where a RSD ≥ 20% was determined for the 10 ng g−1 concentration. Organic pollutants have been detected in fish from the Soumbedioune coast demonstrating the necessity of a regular survey of water and fish in order to protect the populations.

Identification of 2,2′,4,5,5′-Pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB101) metabolites and their transmission characteristics in silver crucian carp (Carassius auratus gibelio)

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been attracting global concern due to their persistence and toxicity. However, the study on the metabolites of PCBs in freshwater fish is limited. In this study, the metabolites of 2,2′,4,5,5′-Pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB101) in silver crucian carp (Carassius auratus gibelio) were identified for the first time. After intraperitoneal injection of PCB101 (2 mg/kg), the results showed that it could be metabolized to at least three types of metabolites, including hydroxylated (OH-), methoxylated (MeO-) and methyl sulfonated (MeSO2-) PCB101. The OH- metabolites identified in most tissues were 3-OH-PCB101and 4-OH-PCB101, such as liver, gallbladder, blood and muscle. MeSO2- metabolites identified in gallbladder, blood and brain were 3-MeSO2-PCB101 and 4-MeSO2-PCB101. Meanwhile, the MeO- metabolite identified in liver, gallbladder, blood and spleen of silver crucian carp was 4-MeO-PCB101. The investigation of the types and structures of PCB101 and its metabolites, as well as the tissue distribution and accumulation characteristics in silver crucian carp are beneficial to understand the transformation and metabolic mechanisms of PCBs in aquatic organisms. It is of great significance to identify potential pollution hazards of precursor compounds and their metabolites on aquatic products and ensure the quality and safety of aquatic products.

Determination of 82 polychlorinated biphenyls in biological samples using accelerated solvent extraction-isotope dilution-high resolution gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry

我国水产品中多氯联苯(PCBs)的检测方法,主要以6种指示性PCBs和12种二噁英类共平面PCBs为主,仅涵盖有限的PCBs。为更全面地获得生物体中PCBs的浓度水平,深入探讨PCBs在生物体内的代谢和富集特征,进而准确评价PCBs对人类的暴露水平及风险,以鱼和贝类作为生物样品代表,建立了加速溶剂提取-同位素稀释-高分辨气相色谱-高分辨质谱(ASE-ID-HRGC-HRMS)测定生物样品中82种PCBs的方法。比较了振荡提取和加速溶剂提取两种提取方式的回收率和重复性,最终采用正己烷-二氯甲烷(1∶1, v/v)对PCBs进行加速溶剂提取。考察了各流分淋洗液对PCBs的回收率,确定了样品提取液经8 g 44%酸性硅胶层析柱(内径15 mm), 90 mL正己烷洗脱的净化方式。样品提取液净化浓缩后进行HRGC-HRMS分析,色谱柱采用DB-5MS超低流失石英毛细管柱(60 m×0.25 mm×0.25 μm)。通过优化后的升温程序对化合物进行分离,以保留时间和两个特征离子精准定性,采用同位素内标法定量。结果表明,在0.1~200 μg/L范围内,平均相对响应因子(RRF)的相对标准偏差值(RSD, n=7)均≤20%,相关系数(r2)>0.99。生物样品中PCBs的方法检出限为0.02~3 pg/g;鱼类中PCBs平均加标回收率为71.3%~141%, RSD(n=7)为2.1%~14%;贝类中PCBs平均加标回收率为76.9%~143%, RSD为1.4%~11%。该方法灵敏、准确、可靠,可以更加全面具体地分析鱼和贝类等水产品受PCBs的污染情况,为国内外开展生物监测提供有效的技术支持,从而服务于相关生态环境管理及履行《斯德哥尔摩公约》。

Monitored Natural Recovery of Contaminated Sediment in Cottonwood Bay, Texas

ABSTRACT Monitored natural recovery (MNR) is a response action for contaminated sediment that relies on natural processes to reduce ecological and human health risks to acceptable levels over time. Multi-media long-term monitoring is necessary to verify remedy effectiveness and success. Whereas MNR has most often been employed together with other engineered remedies to address contaminated sediment, this case study describes an evaluation demonstrating the suitability of MNR with adaptive management as a stand-alone sediment remedial strategy for Cottonwood Bay, located in Dallas, Texas. Current risks at the Cottonwood Bay site are associated with human consumption of fish contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The lines of evidence used to evaluate MNR included documentation of source control; review of PCB burial/isolation and surface sediment recovery; evaluation of sediment deposition and sediment stability; and demonstration of decreasing temporal trends in fish tissue PCB concentrations. The multiple lines of evidence demonstrated that source control and natural recovery processes have contributed substantially to reduced concentrations of PCBs and metals in surface sediments and PCBs in fish. MNR has been approved by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and is incorporated as a stand-alone remedy in the revised Remedial Action Plan (RAP) for Cottonwood Bay. A long-term monitoring plan is being implemented as part of an MNR response action to confirm decreasing trends in surface sediment and fish fillet PCB concentrations over time and to demonstrate the continued effectiveness of natural recovery processes.

Spatiotemporal trends of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in surface and suspended sediments from the Lake Ontario Canadian nearshore 1994–2018: A fish consumption advisory perspective

Spatiotemporal trends for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were examined in surface and suspended sediments collected between 1994 and 2018 from over twenty nearshore stations on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. In 2018, PCB concentrations ranged over an order-of-magnitude in surface (<10 ng/g−357 ng/g) and suspended sediments (<10 ng/g–330 ng/g), illustrating the presence of legacy hotspots as well as diffuse urban inputs. PCB concentrations in both surface and suspended sediments were consistently highest in Hamilton Harbour, but were also elevated at other stations around the perimeter of the Niagara basin as well as near Trenton and Kingston, Ontario. Generally, higher PCB concentrations were found in surface sediment relative to paired suspended sediment samples suggesting temporal improvements in nearshore sediment quality. However, many stations demonstrated temporal variability in PCB concentrations, a likely factor in the lack of an overall nearshore declining trend. Given that PCBs are listed as a consumption-limiting contaminant for all fish sampling blocks in the Canadian waters of Lake Ontario and are responsible for 78% of restricted advisories, sediment quality benchmarks that account for bioaccumulation potential should be considered over toxicologically-derived guidelines to gauge severity of PCB contamination of nearshore sediments. Relatively higher TOC-normalized PCB concentrations in the western end of Lake Ontario suggests additional research on PCB bioavailability from nearshore sediment would be beneficial in understanding basinwide trends of PCBs in fish, and that an adaptive approach to sediment management may be needed in the context of consumption advisories.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Imported Fish

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) which have been described as organohalogenic and legacy contaminants that are hazardous to both wildlife and man. The paucity of ecotoxicological data on the PCB content in commercially important fish in Benin Metropolis, Nigeria, warranted this research. In this stead, the PCB profile in the Atlantic Herring (Clupea harengus, Family: Clupeidae, mean length=31.59 cm; Mean weight=274.98 g) marketed in Benin Metropolis, was determined via Gas Chromatographic technique in order to evaluate its suitability for human consumption and to provide baseline data for this contaminant in commercially important fish species. The summary statistics for the mean concentrations of detectable PCBs in C. harengus ranged from 0.019 mg/kg (PCB 118, 156) to 0.434 mg/kg (PCB 126), with a total of 0.581 mg/kg (w/w) while the mean concentrations of PCBs in C. harengus by market ranged from 0.012 mg/kg (PCB 118) at Santana market to 0.526 mg/kg (PCB 126) at New Benin market with no observed significant difference (p&gt;0.05) in the mean concentrations of PCBs in fish between markets. The toxicity quotient (TQ) values for PCBs in C. harengus ranged from 0.0095 (PCB 118, 156) to 0.217(PCB 126) while the estimated daily intake (EDI) values in mg/person/day for PCBs ranged from 0.00076 (PCB 118, 156) to 0.017 (PCB 126). A toxic equivalency (TEQ) value of 0.04342 while the total PCB content in C. harengus according to market ranged from 0.469 mg/kg (Santana market) to 0.658 mg/kg (Uselu market). The total toxicity of mixtures (TTM) index was 0.291. The PCB levels in fish decreased below International threshold values suggesting suitability for human consumption. Continous monitoring of this fish species for toxic concentrations of PCBs was proferred.

A novel analytical method for determining total polychlorinated biphenyl concentrations in fish and shellfish using a simple and rapid clean-up followed by GC–MS/MS

We developed an analytical method for determining total (sum of all 209 congeners) polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations in fish and shellfish using a newly developed clean-up method and gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The clean-up involved passing a sample extract through a column containing silica gel and sulfuric-acid-treated silica gel and then a column containing alumina and silver-modified alumina. This gave a short clean-up time and required less organic solvent. No marked losses of any of the 209 PCB congeners were found during clean-up. The trueness and repeatability of the analytical method for total PCBs and seven indicator PCBs in fish and shellfish spiked with a commercial PCB mixture were 92 %–94 % and 93 %–105 %, with relative standard deviations of <0.9 % and <3.1 %, respectively. A certified reference fish sample was analyzed, and the measured concentrations of the certified congeners were within the uncertainty limits of the certified concentrations. The concentration ratios for total PCB and the indicator PCBs in fish determined by the new method and the conventional method using high-resolution gas chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry were 0.9–1.1 and 0.9–1.2, respectively. The results indicate that the developed method will be very useful for rapidly determining total PCB concentrations in fish and shellfish.

Improvement of Analytical Method of PCBs by GC-MS/MS Using an Accelerated Solvent Extractor and Expansion of Target Food Products

We examined the expansion of target food products for the analysis of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). From our studies in fish using an accelerated solvent extractor (ASE) and GC-MS/MS, we found that recovery of low-chlorinated PCBs (some isomer of 3 or 4 chlorinated PCBs) in specific food products was low. Therefore, we attempted to improve the analytical method. In Japanese sea perch (Suzuki) and milk, freeze drying before extracting with ASE did not sufficiently improve the recovery of low-chlorinated PCBs; however, it was significantly improved by changing the column to a silica gel/H2SO4 silica gel multilayer column. To evaluate this method for other food products, PCBs in fish, meat, eggs, milk, and dairy products were analyzed. The samples were extracted using ASE at 125℃ with n-hexane, cleaned up using a silica gel/H2SO4 silica gel multilayer column, and analyzed by GC-MS/MS for 3-7 chlorinated PCBs. The limit of quantification for this method was was 0.03-0.16 μg/kg for the 3-7 chlorinated PCBs. The recovery and the coefficient of variation of 3-7 chlorinated PCBs from each of the food products (n=5) was in the range of 84%-112% and 1%-9%, respectively.

Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination of subsistence species on Unalaska Island in the Aleutian Archipelago

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of synthetic, lipophilic organochlorines that were banned due to their impacts on human and wildlife health and environmental persistence. Although banned, the continued release from pre-banned products allows them to persist at toxic levels in the environment. This is especially the case in lipid rich food webs of the Arctic, where PCBs accumulate due to both long-range atmospheric transport and locally contaminated sites such as formerly used defense (FUD) sites. At the request of the leadership of the Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska Island in the Aleutian Archipelago, we analyzed PCB concentrations in samples of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) and subsistence foods (i.e., salmonid species and blue mussels [Mytilus edulis]) collected at both FUD and non-FUD sites. PCBs were extracted from samples using a QuEChERS method. The mean PCB concentrations across all mussel samples was 6.1 ppb; mussels from FUD sites had nearly double the PCB concentrations (7.6 ppb) compared to non-military sites (3.9 ppb), and at two FUD sites the PCB concentrations exceeded safe consumption guidelines. The mean total PCB concentration for fish was 2.8 ppb; fish PCB concentrations were higher at FUD sites (3.2 ppb) compared to non-military sites (1.2 ppb). These results support the need to remediate the FUD sites of “Building 551/T Dock to Airport” and “Delta Western”. More generally, these results provide further evidence of the continued problem of PCB contamination at FUD sites in the Arctic, many of which are co-located with indigenous communities.

Chemical tracers guide identification of the location and source of persistent organic pollutants in juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), migrating seaward through an estuary with multiple contaminant inputs

Understanding the spatial extent, magnitude, and source of contaminant exposure in biota is necessary to formulate appropriate conservation measures to reduce or remediate contaminant exposure. However, obtaining such information for migratory animals is challenging. Juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), a threatened species throughout the US Pacific Northwest, are exposed to persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), in many developed rivers and estuaries. This study used three types of complementary chemical tracer data (contaminant concentrations, POP fingerprints, and stable isotopes), to determine the location and source of contaminant exposure for natural- and hatchery-origin Chinook salmon migrating seaward through a developed watershed with multiple contaminant sources. Concentration data revealed that salmon were exposed to and accumulated predominantly PBDEs and PCBs in the lower mainstem region of the river, with higher PBDEs in natural- than hatchery-origin fish but similar PCBs in both groups, associated with differences in contaminant inputs and/or habitat use. The POP fingerprints of the natural-origin-fish captured from this region were also distinct from other region and origin sample groups, with much higher proportions of PBDEs in the total POP concentration, indicating a different contaminant source or habitat use than the hatchery-origin fish. Stable isotopes, independent tracers of food sources and habitat use, revealed that natural-origin fish from this region also had depleted δ15N signatures compared to other sample groups, associated with exposure to nutrient-rich wastewater. The PBDE-enhanced POP fingerprints in these salmon were correlated with the degree of depletion in nitrogen stable isotopes of the fish, suggesting a common wastewater source for both the PBDEs and the nitrogen. Identification of the location and source of contaminant exposure allows environmental managers to establish conservation measures to control contaminant inputs, necessary steps to improve the health of Chinook salmon and enhance their marine survival.

Polychlorinated biphenyls are still alarming persistent organic pollutants in marine-origin animal feed (fishmeal)

The presence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in feed materials has caused great public concern because PCBs can accumulate in farmed animals, be transferred farm-to-fork and, ultimately, have a detrimental impact on human health. Recently, the occurrence of PCBs in marine environments has garnered scientific attention due to their high levels and potential reproductive threats to marine apex predators. Fishmeal is marine-origin feed material and is susceptible to PCB contamination from the aquatic trophic chain. The present study collected 102 fishmeal samples during 2012–2017 from major global fishmeal production areas (United States, Europe, China, South America and Southeast Asia). The levels of PCBs (26 congeners) were between 0.4 and 19.9 ng g−1 dw (mean: 1.94 ng g−1 dw), with a 75.3% contribution from indicator PCBs on a weight basis. Together with PCDD/Fs, 4.9% of fishmeal exceeded the maximum levels set by the European Commission for dioxin-like compounds (4.0 pg WHO-TEQ/g). The highest PCB levels were found in fishmeal from the U.S. (6.85 ng g−1 dw), which was nearly five times higher than the other four sampling areas. No clear time trends were found for PCBs in fishmeal during the sampling period. Predicted PCB concentrations in farmed fish via fishmeal consumption were between 1.24 and 2.76 ng g−1 dw, which was comparable to PCBs in market fish. When compared to other emerging POPs in the same batches of fishmeal, PCBs were still found to be an alarming class of POPs. Some PCB and PBDE congeners might have similar sources and environmental behaviors.

Alterations in fingerprints of polychlorinated biphenyls in benthic biota at the Portland Harbor Superfund Site (Oregon, USA) suggest metabolism

In order to understand the sources and fate of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in several species of benthic biota, including clams (Corbicula fluminea), oligochaetes (Lumbriculus variegatus), and mussels (Margaritifera falcata and Anodonta nuttalliana) at the Portland Harbor Superfund Site (PHSS), their congener fingerprints were examined. First, diagnostic ratios of congeners known to be metabolizable vs. recalcitrant in the cytochrome P450 (CYP) pathway were significantly lower in biota than in its co-located sediment, indicating metabolism may have occurred. Next, the congener patterns were analyzed using Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). The dominant fingerprint (by mass) in benthic biota is related to Aroclor 1260 but displays differences in the fingerprint that are consistent with weathering via absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME). This fingerprint is similar to one isolated from PCBs in fish from Washington State, indicative of common metabolic pathways and consistent with CYP metabolism. When metabolism is taken into account, the spatial distribution of the PMF-isolated PCB fingerprints in biota matches well with those from co-located sediment samples, suggesting that the same mix of sources at one location partitions into biota and sediment. In accordance to their higher hydrophobicity, higher molecular weight (MW) PCB formulations were proportionately more abundant in biota than in sediment, although low MW PCBs (e.g., PCBs 4 and 11) do bioaccumulate in benthic organisms and should not be ignored in risk assessment efforts. Finally, fingerprinting suggests potential reasons why lab-based and field-based biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) differ substantially for bivalves.

Health Risks of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) Levels in Fish and Sediment from River Niger (Onitsha Axis)

ABSTRACTThe health risks of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) levels in fish and sediment from River Niger (Onitsha axis) was investigated. Fish and sediment samples were collected during dry and rainy seasons from upstream and downstream of the river. Extraction was carried out using n-hexane: acetone mixture (50:50) and PCBs were determined using gas chromatography-electron captor detection. Average recovery of 97.67% was obtained for fish and 95.88% for sediment. PCBs concentration and biota-sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) were higher downstream for both seasons. There was no significant difference (P < 0.05) in PCBs concentration between dry and rainy seasons. Concentrations of PCBs in fish were below the Food and Drug Association (FDA, 2018) tolerance level of 2 ppm. Also, noncarcinogenic hazard quotient (HQ) for PCBs congeners in fish samples were ˂1, which indicates no noncarcinogenic health risks from consumption of fish from Niger River. However, carcinogenic HQ for normal fish consumption in children was above 1 in some sample locations but below 1 for adults. Also, carcinogenic HQ for habitual fish consumption was above 1 in some sample locations for both children and adults. There is presence of PCBs in River Niger as a result of anthropogenic activities and industrial discharges, with human risks especially for children.
