Synthesizing cationic polymers and tuning their properties for microalgae harvesting

This study reports a facile technique to synthesize and tune the cationic polymer, poly(3-acrylamidopropyl)trimethylammonium chloride (PAPTAC), in terms of molecular weight and surface change for harvesting three microalgae species (Scenedesmus sp., P.purpureum, and C. vulgaris). The PAPTAC polymer was synthesised by UV-induced free-radical polymerisation. Polymer tuning was demonstrated by regulating the monomer concentration (60 to 360 mg/mL) and UV power (36 and 60 W) for polymerisation. The obtained PAPTAC polymer was evaluated for harvesting three different microalgae species and compared to a commercially available polymer. The highest flocculation efficiency for Scenedesmus sp. and P. purpureum was observed at a dosage of 25 mg-polymer/g of dry biomass by using PAPTAC-90, resulting in higher flocculation efficiency than the commercial polymer. Results in this study show evidence of effective neutralisation of the negative charge surface of microalgae cells by the produced cationic PAPTAC polymer and polymer bridging for effective flocculation. The obtained PAPTAC polymer was less effective for harvesting C. vulgaris, possibly due to other factors such as cell morphology and composition of extracellular polymeric substances of at the cell membrane that may also influence harvesting performance.

Synthesis and evaluation of cationic polyacrylamide and polyacrylate flocculants for harvesting freshwater and marine microalgae

• Cationic PAETAC & PAmPTAC were synthesized by UV-induced radical polymerization. • New polymers showed good flocculation performance of freshwater & marine microalgae. • Optimal doses of PAETAC were 50 and 4.8 mg/g for C. vulgaris & P. purpureum. • PAETAC and PAmPTAC produced stable flocs, supporting simple dewatering step. This study addresses the challenge of microalgae harvesting through the development of flocculants. Two positively charged cationic polymers including poly[2 (acryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (PAETAC) and poly(3 acrylamidopropyl)trimethylammonium chloride (PAmPTAC) were synthesized using the UV-induced radical polymerization, for harvesting both freshwater and marine microalgae. The results show that the synthesized polymers have excellent flocculation performance for both freshwater green microalgae ( Chlorella vulgaris) and marine red microalgae ( Porphyridium purpureum). PAETAC outperformed PAmPTAC for both Chlorella vulgaris and Porphyridium purpureum microalgae. The optimal PAETAC doses for Chlorella vulgaris and Porphyridium purpureum microalgae were 50 and 4.8 mg/g of dry biomass while the optimal PAmPTAC doses were 252 and 35 mg/g of dry biomass respectively. Additionally, the floc formation with the PAETAC was more stable than PAmPTAC, which supported the dewatering step via sieving. The superior performance can be attributed to the higher molecular weight of the PAETAC polymer when compared to the PAmPTAC polymer. In comparison to commercially available polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PolyDADMAC), the newly synthesised PAETAC and PAmPTAC polymers demonstrated superior flocculation efficiency at a lower dose. The findings of this study established a platform technology for designing and synthesising cationic flocculants for use in microalgae harvesting.

The effect of gel layer thickness on the salt rejection performance of polyelectrolyte gel-filled nanofiltration membranes

The effect of gel layer thickness on salt separation of positively charged pore-filled nanofiltration membranes has been examined both theoretically and experimentally. The extended Nernst-Planck (ENP) equation coupled with the Teorell-Meyer-Sievers (TMS) model were used to calculate the pressure-driven sodium chloride rejections for membranes having gel densities in the range typically used in nanofiltration applications. It was found that salt rejection was dependent on membrane (gel-layer) thickness with salt rejections increasing rapidly with thickness up to 50–75 μm. Further increases in thickness beyond this point had a much smaller effect on salt rejection. The theoretical predictions were examined experimentally by preparing a series of membranes with cross-linked poly(3-acrylamidopropyl)-trimethylammonium chloride (PAPTAC) gels with varying densities within the pores of a thin microporous polyethylene (PE) support. The membranes were characterized by their polymer volume fractions (gel concentration), thicknesses and effective charge densities. The effect of membrane thickness was examined by using single and stacks of two membranes. The pure water fluxes and salt rejections of the membranes and membrane stacks were determined in the pressure range 50–550 kPa. The single salt rejections of the membranes which were very dependent on the thickness of the membrane or membrane stack, were fully in accord with the calculated salt rejections of the membranes.
