Sayyid Qutb's Interpretations: A Focus on Political Concepts

Sayyid Qutb's thinking influenced many Islamic scholars. His book, Fi Zilal al-Qur'an, is the greatest work and influential among the world's Muslim community. This study aims to identify Sayyid Qutb's interpretation, especially political verses in Fi Zilal al-Qur'an, and describe the meaning of politics from his perspective. Establishing an Islamic state is crucial for the implementation of sharia, as political power is necessary for its implementation. Furthermore, it is crucial to understand the correct methods of interpreting Qur'anic verses from modern exegetes. We employ a qualitative approach in our writing, concentrating on library research and gathering information from diverse sources of literature. The approach used is multidisciplinary, encompassing interpretive, historical, and sociological perspectives. The study utilizes primary data, specifically the book Fi Zilal al-Qur'an, as well as secondary data, which includes materials related to Fi Zilal al-Qur'an and sources that can support this writing. The research reveals that Sayyid Qutb employed the tahlili method to interpret the Islamic political verses. Subsequently, Sayyid Qutb's interpretation of politics posits that the government bears the political responsibility of managing and overseeing the affairs of Muslims. Next, the first principle of reign Islam emphasizes who is worthy to be called ulul amri, followed by upholding Allah’s law and, finally, being fair to all human groups.

Shelley and the Retentive Memory

This essay approaches the familiar subject of memory in Shelley through examining his exceptional gift for retentive memorization, a gift not unique to him, but also conspicuously possessed by Byron. A few instances, mostly taken from the Shelley circle and the poet Henry Kirke White, demonstrate the encouragement given to the development of a retentive memory during the Romantic period, and the admiration that it attracted, but also the apprehensiveness lest it become an end in itself. Examples follow of memory feats performed by Byron and Shelley independently and interactively, focusing on the effect upon Shelley’s political poetry of 1819 of hearing Byron read the early part of Don Juan to him in the autumn of 1818, including portions that Shelley could not have reread in the interval. The question arises: did Shelley worry that his memory was a burden, tempting him into unwitting plagiarism? His draft revisions indicate that he sometimes might have done.

BEDOUIN POETRY AS AN ART OF MEMORY. THE DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE PRESENT AND THE PAST IN THE POLITICAL POETRY OF THE NEGEV BEDOUIN

Bedouin poetry has yet to be explored in the context of memory studies, let alone the poetry of the Negev Bedouin. This article, based on a corpus of hundreds of poems documented between the mid-1940s and late-1980s, reviews excerpts from ten political verses composed by Negev Bedouin poets. These verses attest to the power of Bedouin poetry to evoke – at times in just a word or two – a wide range of meanings, a historical depth that may be submersed in a few expressions, and the ways in which these expressions activate memories of the past to communicate something of significance about the present. Discussions on the social role of political lyrics and "tendentious" poetry in German literary criticism of the Pre-Mart era

The article is devoted to the discussion by the German literary community of the 1830s – 1840s of the artistic and social role of political lyrics. The work seeks to present the diverse opinions of prominent publicists, literary theorists and writers of the era, such as Ludwig Berne, Heinrich Heine, Robert Eduard Prutz. The author shares the well-established idea in German historiography that the literary and critical discussion of the Pre-March era gives a more complete picture of the genesis of the political consciousness of the Germans and the socio-political processes that took place in Germany. The author's attention is focused on the discussion concerning the aesthetic and ideological-political ideas of the literary community about the place of poetry in the space of culture, its functions and the claims of writers to direct participation in political life. The methodological basis of this work is the theoretical achievements of the scientific research areas of the "history of concepts" and intellectual history. The central idea of the article is the assumption that the time of the sharp politicization of German artistic culture in the 1830s and 1840s coincided with the revision of the previous principles of artistic creativity, accelerated it and at the same time complicated it, giving both processes a more conflictual and nonlinear character, fixing and exposing the absence among German authors of liberal democratic views that stood at the forefront of literary theory, general, clearly formulated aesthetic guidelines. In these decades, new principles have been approved in the evaluation of literary works affecting socio-political issues. There is a legitimization of political poetry at the theoretical level, but the contradiction between the spheres of politics and aesthetics is not completely removed. And literary discussions are gradually moving out of the artistic and aesthetic sphere into the sphere of practical politics: moderate liberal views collide with democratic radicalism, national patriotic ideas enter into a polemic with cosmopolitan ones.

An Intertextual Approach to the Political Poetry of Griselda Alvarez

The political poetry of Griselda Álvarez has played a fundamental role in the history of Mexico by highlighting silenced voices and social struggles through her verses. As the first female governor in Mexico, Álvarez paved the way for women in politics, and her poetry reflects her commitment to social justice and women's rights. Her poems, including Canto a las barbas, address pressing issues such as gender inequality, political oppression, and the fight for freedom, offering a critical and poetic perspective on the political reality of her time. Griselda Álvarez's work reveals the complex nature of art, which allows for connections between the ineffable essence of being and historical social issues. In this study, we use an intertextual analysis to approach her literary creation from a critical perspective, through which we observe that poetry constructs feelings, sensations, and beauty, while also serving as a tool for resistance and denunciation.

Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan’s Postcolonial Banter and the paradoxes of spoken-word poetry

ABSTRACTThis article reads the work of Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan, an activist and spoken-word poet who, as a British Muslim woman and postcolonial critic, is uniquely placed to articulate postcolonial concerns such as the mental colonization caused by colonial languages and the epistemic violence of colonial discourses. Further, an analysis of the author’s subject position demonstrates how Manzoor-Khan’s work vividly illustrates the predicament of the subaltern fighting to be heard. Her didactic metapoetry translates familiar postcolonial concerns into the 21st century by constituting a hybrid form between poetry and academic discourse, by introducing the vocabulary of postcolonial theory into the casual language of spoken-word poetry, and by employing rhetorical strategies that problematize the relationship between poet and audience as well as the rhetorical burden of producing “humanising” poetry. By analysing how she maintains a tense relationship with her audience, the article complicates what may be misunderstood as straightforward political poetry.

The main research issues in the article are the opposition of the woman-creator of life and politics-slaughter of life in Tamar Hovhannisyan’s poetry and the face of time reflected in a poetic mirror. The political rotation of the Earth in the historicopolitical and historicopsychological poetry of Hovhannisyan penetrates into the heart of a woman, varying from a personal model of psychological perception of time to an impersonal model, from individual to the universal poetry. Tamar Hovhannisyan’s poetry is women’s poetry, which embodies and reflects the tremendous pain caused by a man, the invasion of death into the valley of life, the victory of the hell over the heaven. In her works, the political course of the Earth wails like a stretched nerve string, with variations in voice and style, with the harmony of emotions. Tamar Hovhannisyan’s poetry transforms into the poetic mirror of time, in which her portraits are displayed, refracted and reflected. This is a dramatic poetry of the conflict between a woman and politics, the painful opposition of the life-giving woman to life-destroying geopolitics. Tamar Hovhannisyan's poetry is exceptional and engrossing with its original art of creating images, a unique rhythm of lines and feminine depths of thoughts and feelings. Combining the peculiarities of Western and Armenian literature, subtly integrating them or making smooth transitions, Hovhannisyan created a deeply personal, but also universal poetry, which is the subject of study for present and future philologists.

ULUSAL BİR SANAT OLARAK ŞİİR: CAROL ANN DUFFY’NİN SARAY ŞAİRLİĞİ DÖNEMİNDEKİ POLİTİK ŞİİRİ

When Carol Ann Duffy became Britain's first female poet laureate in 2009, it was a surprise as Duffy has always been a political poet with very harsh criticism of government policies in her works. However, she made it clear that she would not be writing poems for the monarchy and the royal occasions unless she feels to. In an interview with Andrew McAllister in 1988, Carol Ann Duffy stated that her intention as a poet is "to present it, as it is" (72). She added, "poets don't have solutions, poets are recording the human experience." This manifesto informs her work as her political poems illustrate life in the multicultural Britain of the 1980s and 1990s with a close observation of the underprivileged and deprived in Standing Female Nude (1985), Selling Manhattan (1987), and The Other Country (1990). Duffy's laureate poems also reflect her concern to speak for the unvoiced, as for Duffy "poetry provides an important alternative voice to journalists or pundits or academics as a way of dealing with things that matter to us all" (Wroe, 2014, para 1). Thus, this paper is concerned with the political aspect of Duffy's laureate poems, focusing on her political poetry written during her poet laureateship between the years 2009-2019 mainly targeting politicians and highlighting public concerns. Accordingly, she speaks for the public, to present the social and emotional experience of living in contemporary Britain by way of highlighting public concerns of the British people by targeting her criticism to the politicians.

William Drennan and the Poetry of Presbytery

Abstract: Belfast Presbyterian radical Dr William Drennan (1754–1820) is widely regarded as the premier poet of the United Irishmen movement. However, while his significance as a key player in the political drama of the 1790s has been well documented, and his political poetry anthologized, few of Drennan's other poems have received critical attention. Permeating such neglected work from this poet of presbytery is an Irish dissenting, non-subscribing Unitarian Presbyterianism, which also crucially colors his famous political poems. It is proposed here that Drennan's muse is predominantly moral, specifically New Light, being the signature watermark of his chief poetical statements.

Recycling and adapting Constantine Manasses’ Aristandros and Kallithea in the Palaiologan Chapters in Political Verse

The Chapters in Political Verse is a collection of one hundred paraenetic chapters focusing on vices and virtues, transmitted in the Par.gr. 2750A and the Vat.gr. 1898 (fourteenth century) and containing fragments of the lost novel Aristandros and Kallithea by Constantine Manasses (twelfth century). This article offers a discussion on the authorship and audience of the Chapters (better known under the title Moral Poem and attributed to Manasses), arguing that it belongs firmly in the Palaiologan period and was not composed by Manasses. It pays particular attention to the way in which the anonymous author worked with the Manassean hypotext.

Notes on a Technē: Psellus’ Poem 6 W

AbstractThe second part of Psellus’ poem on grammar is a glossary compiled from rare words (270–490), where the lines are ordered and linked according to the Greek alphabet. The first part (1–269) is not – as it might be expected of a didactic poem – a systematic descriptive Greek grammar, but rather a loose collection of teacher’s comments lacking a definite logical structure. The didactic comments set in verse are organised to some extent by words (e.g. ἔγκλισις, μεσότης) that refer to several different grammatical phenomena functioning as cues and thus connecting the subsequent sections. At the time the novelty of this otherwise ordinary poem might have been that Greek grammar was set in political verse (versus politicus) in order to make it easy to memorise and the fact that it discusses Psellus’ views on koine.

This does not mean that the state must be based on the Koran, but that the values ​​of the Koran are reflected in life because the values ​​of the Koran are universal.Politics in the view of the Qur'an or Islamic politics (siyâsah islamiyah) aims to elevate the dignity, status and dignity of mankind to a more qualified and civilized direction according to their functions and duties as caliphs of Allah on earth, spreading mercy and peace and safety to all universe. Islamic politics is achieved if the perpetrators have morals, are moral, civilized, and are responsible to God and others.

“Women Became Free!” Activism, Feminism, Race, and Political Poetry of the Second Degree in Henrika Ringboms Händelser ur Nya Pressen 1968-1974

ABSTRACT Author Henrika Ringbom’s collection of poems entitled Händelser ur Nya Pressen 1968–1974. Prosadikter (2009) is a rare piece of Finland-Swedish literature. Rewriting news from a Finland-Swedish evening press paper during the 1960s and 1970s, it offers a view on the colonial mind-set of the Nordic countries. The poems not only depict political events from various parts of a global world, they also open up an unmarked category in Nordic literature, that of race and whiteness. An essential part of Finland-Swede’s self-understanding goes back to its status as a minority. This applies even to Finland-Swedish literature. It also has a notable tradition of female feminist writing that runs through the 20th century. Finland-Swedish literature, however, belongs also to a majority when it comes to Western ideas of race and whiteness in a Nordic context. In my analysis, I show how Ringbom scrutinizes events from a phase Tobias Hübinette and Catrin Lundström (2014) call the “white solidarity” (1968–2001), characterized by antiracism, anti-apartheid, social justice and gender equality, but also of color-blindness. I show how Ringbom contributes to the current discussions of political Nordic literature with a rich, complex, ambivalent and defamiliarizing way. The poems actively remind us how both political events and political poetry are complex and contradictory. Rather than offering a clear-cut poetic activism, Rinbom writes political poetry of the second degree, one that examines and reflects upon the conditions of politics, popular media, and political poetry.

"Loquela gravis iuvat": Gower's O deus immense and the Place of Poetry, 1398–1400

Abstract: John Gower's medium-length Latin poem O deus immense , little thought of even by most Gowerians, brings his career into focus. O deus immense synthesizes strands of Gower's self-presentation pursued far more diffusely in his titanic trilogy Mirour de l'omme – Vox clamantis – Confessio Amantis . The place Gower clears for poetry in 1398, 1399, or 1400—the date of O deus immense is uncertain, a point addressed here at length—is characterized by its public, monitory, prophetic, and enigmatic dimensions. Focusing on the historically remote genre of political prophecy, this essay compares O deus immense with other Gowerian and non-Gowerian English political verse in English and Latin datable to 1398–1400, including Bede's Prophecy , an anonymous rhyming English poem of 1400 inedited until recently and therefore, like O deus immense , not factoring into previous critical assessments of the poetry of the Lancastrian coup. Attending to the complex relationship between poetics and politics at the turn of the fifteenth century in England, the essay positions O deus immense as pivotal in Gower's career and essential for an evaluation of what he contributed to the first generation of Lancastrian poetry. Gower's "most significant role" in the field of English political poetry, 1398–1400, was as its leading theorist and most skillful advocate, a role he plays most assiduously in O deus immense ; but it is both a credit to his depth of ambition and an explanation of the often violent contortions of his late Latin style that Gower's arguments for a poetry of moral clarity, social urgency, and political muscle transcend the very ideological commitments that transparently motivate them.

“A Refugee from Belief”: Agha Shahid Ali’s Poetics of Rupture

AbstractThis article attempts a reassessment of the political aspirations within Agha Shahid Ali’s poetics through a close reading ofThe Country without a Post Office.Although Shahid’s formal innovations have often been prioritized over his political commitments within scholarly evaluations of his work, I contend that in this collection, Agha Shahid Ali practices a “poetics of rupture”: holding themes of coherence and disruption, continuity and breakage, the global and the local in sustained tension with each other throughout the volume. Forged through a political commitment to represent Kashmir in crisis, his poetics of rupture is simultaneously formally founded on breakage and discontinuity, and itself ruptures, as I eventually propose, the very binaries (poetics versus polemics, personal versus political, local versus global) that shadow political poetry. I demonstrate the specifics of Shahid’s poetics of rupture through an analysis of his work with literary allusions and poetic forms. Eventually, this article contends that recognizing the political import of his poetics of rupture has consequences for our recognition of the crisis in Kashmir itself and the ethical and formal possibilities surrounding the representation of this crisis.

Tugadh an t-ár-seo ar Éirinn: dán polaitiúil ó thús an seachtú haois déag

This paper provides a discussion and edition of Tugadh an t-ár-so ar Éirinn, an early seventeenth-century political poem attributed to Eóghan Mac Craith. The poem, which is a lament on the state of Ireland, abounds in imagery and motifs that are typically associated with the accentual political poetry of the middle of the century, and contains what is, perhaps, one of the earliest examples of the gendered depiction of Ireland as a neglectful mother who has abandoned her children. The poem also contains interesting supplementary quatrains, or iargcomhairc, to Donnchadh Ó Briain, the fourth Earl of Thomond. It will be suggested here that these stanzas, in which the Virgin Mary is invoked, may, in fact, be a cloaked rebuke of the earl’s staunch Protestantism. The question of the poem’s date of composition, which has hitherto caused some confusion, will also be addressed.

Emevî Devleti siyasî yaşam şartlarının ve yaşam şekillerinin değişikliğe uğradığı, Arap’ın Arap olanla mücadelesi sonucu kurulan Sahâbe ve Tâbiîn’in daha hayatta olduğu kısa ömürlü hanedan devleti dönemidir. İslâm tarihinin en önemli aşamasını oluşturan bu dönemin en belirgin ve ayırıcı özelliği yaşanan siyasî, fikrî ve askerî olaylarıdır. Câhiliye Dönemi’nde olduğu gibi bu dönemde de kabilelerle ve soyla övünme “asabiyet” zirveye ulaşmıştır. Kabilelerle övünmenin öncü kuvveti kabilesinin lideri konumunda olan kabile şairidir. Bu dönemde şiir hizip mücadelelerine hizmet ederek şairler arasındaki şiir atışmaları “nekâiz” grup taassubunun zirvesine ulaşmıştır. Bu dönem şairleri ya kendi kabilesinin ya desteklediği siyasî grubunun ya da mensubu olduğu mezhebinin resmi sözcüsü, yandaş medyası konumundadır. Ümeyyeoğulları şiirden hoşlanırlar, şiirin önemini ve şairin toplum nezdindeki konumunun farkında idiler. Bundan dolayı şairlere önemli miktarda hediyeler vererek hanedanlıklarını destekleyen taraftarlar toplamışlardır. Çünkü ortaya çıkan her yeni muhalif grubu destekleyen kendi şairleri, sözcüleri vardır. Yönetimi destekleyen şairler adeta yandaş medya muhalif grupları destekleyen şairler de muhalif medya gibiydiler. Siyasî şiir tarih boyunca Arap edebiyatında birçok farklı aşamalardan geçmiş ve her dönemde geçmiş dönemlerden farklı ve ayırıcı özellikleri olmuştur. Şiir, Emevî Dönemi’nde ise daha net bir siyasî yapı kazanıp zirveye yerleşmiştir. Bu çalışmada “Emevî Dönemi siyasî yaşamı, hanedan taraftarı ve Alevî şairlerin şiirlerinin edebiyata siyasî etkisi ile sadece halifelere yaptıkları övgüleri” ele alınacaktır. Emevî hanedanının profesyonel meddahları olan Cerîr, el-Ahtal ve muhalif grupların şairlerinin inşâd ettiği şiirlerden örneklere yer verilmeyecektir.
