Liquid cloud optical property retrieval and associated uncertainties using multi-angular and bispectral measurements of the airborne radiometer OSIRIS

Abstract. In remote sensing applications, clouds are generally characterized by two properties: cloud optical thickness (COT) and effective radius of water–ice particles (Reff), as well as additionally by geometric properties when specific information is available. Most of the current operational passive remote sensing algorithms use a mono-angular bispectral method to retrieve COT and Reff. They are based on pre-computed lookup tables while assuming a homogeneous plane-parallel cloud layer. In this work, we use the formalism of the optimal estimation method, applied to airborne near-infrared high-resolution multi-angular measurements, to retrieve COT and Reff as well as the corresponding uncertainties related to the measurement errors, the non-retrieved parameters, and the cloud model assumptions. The measurements used were acquired by the airborne radiometer OSIRIS (Observing System Including PolaRization in the Solar Infrared Spectrum), developed by the Laboratoire d'Optique Atmosphérique. It provides multi-angular measurements at a resolution of tens of meters, which is very suitable for refining our knowledge of cloud properties and their high spatial variability. OSIRIS is based on the POLDER (POlarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances) concept as a prototype of the future 3MI (Multi-viewing Multi-channel Multi-polarization Imager) planned to be launched on the EUMETSAT-ESA MetOp-SG platform in 2024. The approach used allows the exploitation of all the angular information available for each pixel to overcome the radiance angular effects. More consistent cloud properties with lower uncertainty compared to operational mono-directional retrieval methods (traditional bispectral method) are then obtained. The framework of the optimal estimation method also provides the possibility to estimate uncertainties of different sources. Three types of errors were evaluated: (1) errors related to measurement uncertainties, which reach 6 % and 12 % for COT and Reff, respectively, (2) errors related to an incorrect estimation of the ancillary data that remain below 0.5 %, and (3) errors related to the simplified cloud physical model assuming independent pixel approximation. We show that not considering the in-cloud heterogeneous vertical profiles and the 3D radiative transfer effects leads to an average uncertainty of 5 % and 4 % for COT and 13 % and 9 % for Reff.

A Practical Approach to Improve the MODIS MCD43A Products in Snow-Covered Areas

The MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) MCD43A products have been extensively applied in the remote sensing field, but recent researchers have demonstrated that these products still had the potential to be further improved by using the latest development of the kernel-driven model [RossThick-LiSparseReciprocal-Snow (RTLSRS)] in snow-covered areas, since the MCD43A product algorithm [RossThick-LiSparseReciprocal (RTLSR)] needed to be improved for the accurate simulation of snow bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) signatures. In this paper, we proposed a practical approach to improve the MCD43A products, which used the Polarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectance (POLDER) observations and random forest algorithm to establish the relationship between the BRDF parameters (MCD43A1) estimated by the RTLSR and RTLSRS models. We applied this relationship to correct the MCD43A1 product and retrieve the corresponding albedo (MCD43A3) and nadir reflectance (MCD43A4). The results obtained highlight several aspects: (a) The proposed approach can perform well in correcting BRDF parameters [root mean square error (RMSE) = ~0.04]. (b) The corrected BRDF parameters were then used to retrieve snow albedo, which matched up quite well with the results of the RTLSRS model. (c) Finally, the snow albedo retrieved by the proposed approach was assessed using ground-based albedo observations. Results indicated that the retrieved snow albedo showed a higher accuracy as compared to the station measurements (RMSE = 0.055, bias = 0.005), which was better than the results of the MODIS albedo product (RMSE = 0.064, bias = −0.018), especially at large angles. These results demonstrated that this proposed approach presented the potential to further improve the MCD43A products in snow-covered areas.

Validation and Analysis of MISR and POLDER Aerosol Products over China

Multi-angle polarization measurement is an important technical means of satellite remote sensing applied to aerosol monitoring. By adding angle information and polarization measurements, aerosol optical and microphysical properties can be more comprehensively and accurately retrieved. The accuracy of aerosol retrieval can reflect the advantages and specific accuracy improvement of multi-angle polarization. In this study, the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) V23 aerosol products and the Polarization and Directionality of the Earth’s Reflectance (POLDER) GRASP “high-precision” archive were evaluated with the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) observations over China. Validation of aerosol optical depth (AOD), absorbing aerosol optical depth (AAOD), and the Ångström exponent (AE) properties was conducted. Our results show that the AOD inversion accuracy of POLDER-3/GRASP is higher with the correlation coefficient (R) of 0.902, slope of 0.896, root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.264, mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.190, and about 40.71% of retrievals within the expected error (EE, ± 0.05+0.2×AODAERONET) lines. For AAOD, the performance of two products is poor, with better results for POLDER-3/GRASP data. POLDER-3/GRASP AE also has higher R of 0.661 compared with that of MISR AE (0.334). According to the validation results, spatiotemporal distribution, and comparison with other traditional scalar satellite data, the performance of multi-angle polarization observations is better and is suitable for the retrieval of aerosol properties.

Revisiting the Performance of the Kernel-Driven BRDF Model Using Filtered High-Quality POLDER Observations

The Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) is usually used to describe the reflectance anisotropy of a non-Lambertian surface and estimate surface parameters. Among the BRDF models, the kernel-driven models have been extensively used due to their simple form and powerful fitting ability, and their reliability has been validated in some studies. However, existing validation efforts used in situ measurements or limited satellite data, which may be subject to inadequate observational conditions or quality uncertainties. A recently released high-quality BRDF database from Polarization and Directionality of the Earth’s Reflectances (POLDER) provides an opportunity to revisit the performance of the kernel-driven models. Therefore, in order to evaluate the fitting ability of the kernel-driven models under different observational conditions and explore their application direction in the future, we use the filtered high-quality BRDF database to evaluate the fitting ability of the kernel-driven model represented by the RossThick-LiSparseR (RTLSR) kernels in this paper. The results show that the RTLSR model performs well, which shows small fitting residuals under most observational conditions. However, the applicability of the RTLSR model performed differently across land cover types; the RTLSR model exhibited larger fitting residuals, especially over non-vegetated surfaces. Under different sun-sensor geometries, the fitting residuals show a strong positive correlation with the Solar Zenith Angle. The above two factors cause the RTLSR model to exhibit a poorer fitting ability at high latitudes. As an exploration, we designed a model combination strategy that combines the advantages of different models and achieved a better performance at high latitudes. We believe that this study provides a better understanding of the RTLSR model.

AEROCOM and AEROSAT AAOD and SSA study – Part 1: Evaluation and intercomparison of satellite measurements

Abstract. Global measurements of absorbing aerosol optical depth (AAOD) are scarce and mostly provided by the ground network AERONET (AErosol RObotic NETwork). In recent years, several satellite products of AAOD have been developed. This study's primary aim is to establish the usefulness of these datasets for AEROCOM (Aerosol Comparisons between Observations and Models) model evaluation with a focus on the years 2006, 2008 and 2010. The satellite products are super-observations consisting of 1∘×1∘×30 min aggregated retrievals. This study consists of two papers, the current one that deals with the assessment of satellite observations and a second paper (Schutgens et al., 2021) that deals with the evaluation of models using those satellite data. In particular, the current paper details an evaluation with AERONET observations from the sparse AERONET network as well as a global intercomparison of satellite datasets, with a focus on how minimum AOD (aerosol optical depth) thresholds and temporal averaging may improve agreement between satellite observations. All satellite datasets are shown to have reasonable skill for AAOD (three out of four datasets show correlations with AERONET in excess of 0.6) but less skill for SSA (single-scattering albedo; only one out of four datasets shows correlations with AERONET in excess of 0.6). In comparison, satellite AOD shows correlations from 0.72 to 0.88 against the same AERONET dataset. However, we show that performance vs. AERONET and inter-satellite agreements for SSA improve significantly at higher AOD. Temporal averaging also improves agreements between satellite datasets. Nevertheless multi-annual averages still show systematic differences, even at high AOD. In particular, we show that two POLDER (Polarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances) products appear to have a systematic SSA difference over land of ∼0.04, independent of AOD. Identifying the cause of this bias offers the possibility of substantially improving current datasets. We also provide evidence that suggests that evaluation with AERONET observations leads to an underestimate of true biases in satellite SSA. In the second part of this study we show that, notwithstanding these biases in satellite AAOD and SSA, the datasets allow meaningful evaluation of AEROCOM models.

Assimilating aerosol optical properties related to size and absorption from POLDER/PARASOL with an ensemble data assimilation system

Abstract. A data assimilation system for aerosol, based on an ensemble Kalman filter, has been developed for the ECHAM – Hamburg Aerosol Model (ECHAM-HAM) global aerosol model and applied to POLarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances (POLDER)-derived observations of optical properties. The advantages of this assimilation system is that the ECHAM-HAM aerosol modal scheme carries both aerosol particle numbers and mass which are both used in the data assimilation system as state vectors, while POLDER retrievals in addition to aerosol optical depth (AOD) and the Ångström exponent (AE) also provide information related to aerosol absorption like aerosol absorption optical depth (AAOD) and single scattering albedo (SSA). The developed scheme can simultaneously assimilate combinations of multiple variables (e.g., AOD, AE, SSA) to optimally estimate mass mixing ratio and number mixing ratio of different aerosol species. We investigate the added value of assimilating AE, AAOD and SSA, in addition to the commonly used AOD, by conducting multiple experiments where different combinations of retrieved properties are assimilated. Results are evaluated with (independent) POLDER, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Dark Target, MODIS Deep Blue and Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) observations. The experiment where POLDER AOD, AE and SSA are assimilated shows systematic improvement in mean error, mean absolute error and correlation for AOD, AE, AAOD and SSA compared to the experiment where only AOD is assimilated. The same experiment reduces the global ME against AERONET from 0.072 to 0.001 for AOD, from 0.273 to 0.009 for AE and from −0.012 to 0.002 for AAOD. Additionally, sensitivity experiments reveal the benefits of assimilating AE over AOD at a second wavelength or SSA over AAOD, possibly due to a simpler observation covariance matrix in the present data assimilation framework. We conclude that the currently available AE and SSA do positively impact data assimilation.

Derivation of PM10 mass concentration from advanced satellite retrieval products based on a semi-empirical physical approach

PM10 remote sensing is of great significance in the atmospheric environment studies. Contrary to intuitive perception, deriving PM10 is more difficult than PM2.5 from satellite measurements. This is because although the major satellite parameter Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) contain contribution of all suspended particles, it is much more sensitive to fine particles than coarse particles. To address this challenge, a physically based remote sensing method for PM10 is developed using two new semi-empirical physical models: the model of columnar volume-to-extinction ratio (VE10) and the model of particle effective density. VE10 is a key parameter bridging the non-linear relationship between aerosol extinction and volume concentration. A semi- empirical VE10 model is developed based on the fine mode fraction (FMF), and the mean relative error of VE10 modeling is 14.5%. Similarly, the particle effective density depends on the ratio of mass to volume. The particle effective density is effectively characterized by refractive index of matter, with the theoretical error of 13.8%. Both semi-empirical physical models are applied to the derivation of PM10, by using aerosol retrieval products of POLarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances (POLDER) produced by the Generalized Retrieval of Atmosphere and Surface Properties (GRASP) algorithm. As a validation, PM10 mass concentration is estimated over China from Jan. to Oct. in 2013. A fairly good correlation and consistency are achieved by inter-comparison with in-situ PM10 measurements.

A study on the propagation of surface polarization errors to the top of atmosphere

Light scattered by the surface–atmosphere system is partially polarized and provides useful information about aerosols and the underlying surface as polarized signals are sensitive to angular information about aerosols. To fully utilize this information, separating polarization signals of the atmosphere and surface by using the bidirectional polarized distribution function (BPDF) is necessary. However, although several BPDF models have been developed, the effects of the uncertainties of these models on the top-of-the-atmosphere (TOA) have not been fully investigated. In this study, we utilize the newly released POLarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances (POLDER) dataset as a measured surface polarized reflectance dataset to parameterize the six currently used BPDF models. The measured and modeled surface polarized reflectances are used as inputs to vector radiative transfer models by statistical aggregating schemes considering all possible POLDER geometries. The root mean square errors between the measured and modeled polarized reflectances at the TOA decreased to 60–75% of the root mean square errors between the measured and modeled polarized reflectances at the surface and further decreased to a relatively low level (20%–30%) when the aerosol optical depth (AOD) increased. The BPDF uncertainty mainly affects the aerosol property retrievals mainly at low aerosol loadings. However, the accuracy of the surface BPDF required to obtain a sufficiently accurate retrieval at small AODs is still unknown. This study provides further insights that are valuable for understanding the coupling effect of the surface and atmosphere and important methods and information for retrieval of aerosol properties.

Assessment of Improved Ross–Li BRDF Models Emphasizing Albedo Estimates at Large Solar Angles Using POLDER Data

Surface albedo is closely related to the Earth’s energy budget and is usually estimated by integrating remotely sensed bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) data based on the widely used Ross–Li kernel-driven models. However, for large solar zenith angles (i.e., SZAs > 70°), albedo estimation using the operational algorithm of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), i.e., RossThick-LiSparseReciprocal (RTLSR), is not recommended because it is reported to somewhat underestimate the black-sky albedo (BSA) at large SZAs based on ground albedo measurements. Recently, various combinations of the Ross–Li BRDF models with improved capabilities have been developed, and the assessments of these models based on worldwide satellite BRDF data with good spatial sampling, particularly at the large view and solar angles, will be important to improve an understanding of their performance in estimating intrinsic albedos. Following previous studies, the objective of this study is to further assess a series of hotspot-corrected Ross–Li models by demonstrating their ability to fit the POLarization and Directionality of the Earth’s Reflectances (POLDER) data sets and estimate albedo, especially at large SZAs, based on selected concurrent POLDER and MODIS data. The hotspot-corrected RTLSR model obtained by combining the RossThickChen and LiSparseReciprocalChen kernels (RTLSR_C) shows the best fitting ability, with a high cumulative frequency of small root-mean-square errors (RMSEs), thus confirming previous conclusions. Model differences mainly appear in albedo estimates, especially BSA estimates at large SZAs. The BSAs estimated by other models are significantly different from the RTLSR_C estimates in the near-infrared (NIR) and red bands as the SZA increases to approximately 60° and 70°, respectively. In this case, RossThinChen-LiSparseReciprocalChen (RTNLSR_C) yields higher BSA estimates than those of RTLSR_C. Comparisons of the MODIS and POLDER albedos estimated with Ross–Li models show that models with the RossThinChen kernel yield higher BSA estimates than those of the RTLSR_C model as the SZA increases. The results indicate that the retrieved albedo is likely to be more accurate with appropriately selected kernels for BRDF models at large SZAs, providing guidance for selecting suitable combinations of multiple kernels.

Evaluating Snow Bidirectional Reflectance of Models Using Multiangle Remote Sensing Data and Field Measurements

Because of the anisotropy of snow surface reflectance, it is essential to select a proper snow bidirectional reflectance model for extracting snow cover and inverting snow properties from remote sensing image, especially during the period of snow rapidly changed. In this letter, the ability of reproducing snow bidirectional reflectance by three semiempirical bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) models (Ross-Li, Roujean, and Raman-Pinty-Verstraete) and the asymptotic radiative transfer theory (ART) model was evaluated using the polarization and directionality of the earth reflectance (POLDER) data. In addition, the ART model was compared with the bicontinuous geometric optics (bic-GORT) model based on field measurements. The results indicated that the root mean square errors (RMSEs) are small and similar for all models during the stable-snow period. The physical models perform better than the semiempirical models in capturing the bidirectional signatures of snow during the periods of snow rapidly changed. The bic-GORT model achieves higher accuracy, while the ART model holds the advantages of simple and efficient to be used.

Water vapor satellite products in the European Arctic: An inter-comparison against GNSS data

The European Arctic is a region of high interest for climate change. Water vapor plays a fundamental role in global warming; therefore, high-quality water vapor monitoring is essential for assimilation in forecast simulations. The seven analyzed instruments on-board satellite platforms are: Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), Global Ozone Monitoring Instrument 2 (GOME-2), Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), SCanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Carthography (SCIAMACHY) and Polarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances (POLDER). The GNSS data from Ny-Ålesund are matched to satellite observations of IWV in a 30-min temporal window, and 100-km radius. Then, statistics and the distribution of satellite-ground differences under different conditions are studied. The correlation coefficient (R2) with ground-based measurements is about 0.7 for all products except OMI (R2=0.5), and MODIS NIR and POLDER (R2=0.3). OMI shows high bias and variability compared to the rest of products. RMSE values are of the order of 3 mm for all satellites, except OMI (7 mm) and POLDER (5 mm). Bias (MBE) is negligible for AIRS, close to +1.6 mm for GOME-2 and MODIS IR, +0.8 mm for MODIS NIR, +5.9 mm for OMI, −2.7 mm for POLDER and −1.2 mm for SCIAMCHY. All satellite products tend to overestimate small IWV values and underestimate large IWV values. Variability also increases with IWV. An underestimation of the satellite products and an increase on the variability is generally observed for large Solar Zenith Angle (SZA) values. Under cloudy conditions, underestimation and variability are increased. Seasonal behavior is driven by the typical cloud cover (CC), SZA, and IWV values. In summer, it is typical to find conditions with large IWV, small SZA and large CC values. Therefore, in summer months satellite products are more biased (either positively or negatively) and with more variability, but in relative terms they are less biased and exhibit less variability.

Retrieval of GF-4 Satellite Image Data Surface Albedo Based on Angular Bin Algorithm

Albedo has important significance to the research of the surface energy balance and climate. GF-4 satellite is the earth synchronous orbit satellite, whose spatial resolution is 50 m, much better than other same orbit satellites. Because GF-4 only has one observation angle on a site, it's difficult to use bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) inversion method to retrieve the albedo. So, we use angular bin (AB1) algorithm to retrieve the albedo. AB1 is based on priori knowledge. Firstly, we use the data of Polarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances (POLDER) to found the empirical explanation between albedo and the reflectivity of one angle, and then convert POLDER's empirical explanation to GF-4 by the spectral response functions of POLDER and GF-4.Next Plug in one GF-4's image and calculate the albedo using the empirical explanation. Last we use MODIS and Landsat 8 albedo products to verify the calculation results. The results show that the root mean square error (RMSE) of MODIS albedo and GF-4 albedo is 0.027 3, the RMSE of Landsat 8 albedo and GF-4 albedo is 0.017 6, verify that the accuracy of albedo inversion based on AB1 is reliable, proving that using the AB1to retrieve the GF-4's albedo has good precision.

Space‐Based Analysis of the Cloud Thermodynamic Phase Transition for Varying Microphysical and Meteorological Regimes

AbstractPhase transitions leading to cloud glaciation occur at temperatures that vary between 38°C and 0°C depending on aerosol types and concentrations, the meteorology, and cloud microphysical and macrophysical parameters, although the relationships remain poorly understood. Here, we statistically retrieve a cloud glaciation temperature from two passive space‐based instruments that are part of the NASA/CNES A‐Train, the POLarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances (POLDER) and the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). We compare the glaciation temperature for varying bins of cloud droplet effective radius, latitude, and large‐scale vertical pressure velocity and specific humidity at 700 hPa. Cloud droplet size has the strongest influence on glaciation temperature: For cloud droplets larger than 21 m, the glaciation temperature is 6°C higher than for cloud droplets smaller than 9 m. Stronger updrafts are also associated with lower glaciation temperatures.

Retrieval of Aerosol Optical Thickness in the Arctic Snow-Covered Regions Using Passive Remote Sensing: Impact of Aerosol Typing and Surface Reflection Model

Currently, no aerosol optical thickness (AOT) data set over the Arctic snow/ice-covered regions derived from space-borne passive remote sensing is available. The challenge is to develop an accurate and robust technique to derive AOT above highly variable and bright snow/ice surfaces. To extend data coverage of the eXtensible Bremen Aerosol/cloud and surfacE Retrieval (XBAER) AOT data product in the future, we propose a new algorithm for the retrieval of AOT and surface properties over snow/ice simultaneously. The algorithm utilizes the linear perturbation theory and does not use any simplified atmospheric correction techniques. Key issues like the selection of a proper aerosol type and optimal surface parameterization method for the retrieval of AOT over the Arctic have been investigated. The aerosol type is investigated using the aerosol climatology microphysical properties derived from four Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) sites (Barrow, Hornsund, Kangerlussuaq, and Tiksi). The three-parametric Ross-Li linear kernel model is used to describe the snow bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF). The a priori knowledge of wavelength-dependent features of the coefficients in the Ross-Li linear kernel model is derived from Polarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances (POLDER) measurements over the Arctic and utilized as constraints in the retrieval. The studies show that the combination of Ross-Li surface model and weakly absorbing aerosol parameterization provides an optimal way to derive AOT over the Arctic snow/ice-covered regions from passive remote sensing observations. The retrieved AOTs using POLDER show good agreement with AERONET observations.

Modeling Polarized Reflectance of Natural Land Surfaces Using Generalized Regression Neural Networks

Retrieval of complete aerosol properties over land through remote sensing requires accurate information about the polarization characteristics of natural land surfaces. In this paper, a new bidirectional polarization distribution function (BPDF) is proposed, using the generalized regression neural network (GRNN). This GRNN-based BPDF model builds a quite accurate nonlinear relationship between polarized reflectance and four input parameters, i.e., Fresnel factor, scattering angle, red, and near-infrared reflectances. It learns fast because only a smoothing parameter needs to be adjusted. The GRNN-based model is compared to six widely used BPDF models (i.e., Nadal–Bréon, Maignan, Waquet, Litivinov, Diner, and Xie–Cheng models), using the Polarization and Directionality of the Earth’s Reflectance (POLDER) measurements. Experiments suggest that the GRNN-based BPDF model is more accurate than these models. Compared with the best current models, the averaged root-mean-square error (RMSE) from the GRNN-based BPDF model can be reduced by 13.4% by using data collected during the whole year and is lower for 97.4% cases with data collected during every month. Moreover, compared to the widely used BPDF models, the GRNN-based BPDF model provides better performance when the scattering angle is small, and it is the first model that is able to reproduce negative polarized reflectance. The GRNN-based BPDF model is thus useful for the remote sensing of complete aerosol properties over land.

Assessment of the Hotspot Effect for the PROSAIL Model With POLDER Hotspot Observations Based on the Hotspot-Enhanced Kernel-Driven BRDF Model

The hotspot effect is a typical angular reflectance signature of vegetation canopies and contains important information for the retrieval of vegetation structural parameters. To date, the hotspot effect of various analytical bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) models (e.g., the PROSAIL model) has rarely been assessed by multiangular measurements with sufficient hotspot observations due to the lack of accurate hotspot measurements (for field measurements) or appropriate methods (for airborne and spaceborne measurements). In this paper, we develop a method to further improve the hotspot effect of the kernel-driven model and design a framework to utilize the improved kernel-driven model as a bridge to assess the hotspot effect of the PROSAIL model with Polarization and Directionality of the Earth Reflectance (POLDER) hotspot observations. The results indicate that the proposed method further improves the fits between the models and the observations in the vicinity of the hotspot direction, particularly in the rare situations where the geometric-optical scattering component governs the target reflectance. In addition, the hotspot signature indicated by the PROSAIL multiangular data shows a larger variability than that of POLDER observations. $C_{1}$ and $C_{2}$ in the improved kernel-driven model can be used as benchmarked parameters to qualify the amplitude and width of the hotspot effect for the simulated multiangular data of physical BRDF models and thus present the potential for the assessment and analysis of the hotspot effect of physical models, which, in return, helps retrieve the structural parameters of vegetation canopies from hotspot signatures.

Studying the Impact on Urban Health over the Greater Delta Region in Egypt Due to Aerosol Variability Using Optical Characteristics from Satellite Observations and Ground-Based AERONET Measurements

This research addresses the aerosol characteristics and variability over Cairo and the Greater Delta region over the last 20 years using an integrative multi-sensor approach of remotely sensed and PM10 ground data. The accuracy of these satellite aerosol products is also evaluated and compared through cross-validation against ground observations from the AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) project measured at local stations. The results show the validity of using Multi-angle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensors on the Terra and Aqua platforms for quantitative aerosol optical depth (AOD) assessment as compared to Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS), and POLarization and Directionality of the Earth’s Reflectances (POLDER). In addition, extracted MISR-based aerosol products have been proven to be quite effective in investigating the characteristics of mixed aerosols. Daily AERONET AOD observations were collected and classified using K-means unsupervised machine learning algorithms, showing five typical patterns of aerosols in the region under investigation. Four seasonal aerosol emerging episodes are identified and analyzed using multiple indicators, including aerosol optical depth (AOD), size distribution, single scattering albedo (SSA), and Ångström exponent (AE). The movements and detailed aerosol composition of the aforementioned episodes are demonstrated using NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) back trajectories model in collaboration with aerosol subtype products from the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) mission. These episodes indicate that during the spring, fall, and summer, most of the severe aerosol events are caused by dust or mixed related scenarios, whereas during winter, aerosols of finer size lead to severe heavy conditions. It also demonstrates the impacts of different aerosol sources on urban human health, which are presented by the variations of multiple parameters, including solar radiation, air temperature, humidity, and UV exposure. Scarce ground PM10 data were collected and compared against satellite products, yet owed to their discrete nature of availability, our approach made use of the Random Decision Forest (RDF) model to convert satellite-based AOD and other meteorological parameters to predict PM10. The RDF model with inputs from the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2) and Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) datasets improves the performance of using AOD products to estimate PM10 values. The connection between climate variability and aerosol intensity, as well as their impact on health-related PM2.5 over Egypt is also demonstrated.

Intercomparison of Multiple Satellite Aerosol Products against AERONET over the North China Plain

In this study, using Aerosol Robotic Network aerosol optical depth (AOD) products at three stations in the North China Plain (NCP)—a heavily polluted region in China—the AOD products from six satellite-borne radiometers: the Moderate Resolution Imagining Spectroradiometer (MODIS), the Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR), Ozone Mapping Imaging (OMI), the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer (VIIRS), the Sea-Viewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor (SeaWiFS), and Polarization and Directionality of the Earth’s Reflectances (POLDER), were thoroughly validated, shedding new light on their advantages and disadvantages. The MODIS Deep Blue (DB) products provide more accurate retrievals than the MODIS Dark Target (DT) and other satellite products at the Beijing site (BJ,a megacity), with higher correlations with AERONET (R > 0.93), lower mean absolute bias (MB < 0.012), and higher percentages (>68%) falling within the expected error (EE). All MODIS DT and DB products perform better than the other satellite products at the Xianghe site (XH, a suburb). The MODIS/Aqua DT products at both 3-km and 10-km resolutions performed better than the other space-borne AOD products at the Xinglong site (XL, a rural area at the top of a mountain). MISR, VIIRS, and SeaWiFS tend to underestimate high AOD values and overestimate AOD values under very low AOD conditions in the NCP. Both OMI and POLDER significantly underestimate the AOD. In terms of data volume, MISR with the limited swath width of 380 km has less data volume than the other satellite sensors. MODIS products have the highest sampling rate, especially the MODIS DT and DB merged products, and can be used for various climate study and air-quality monitoring.

Retrieving Aerosol Characteristics From the PACE Mission, Part 2: Multi-Angle and Polarimetry

The Plankton, Aerosol, Clouds, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission presents new opportunities and new challenges in applying observations of two complementary multi-angle polarimeters for the space-based retrieval of global aerosol properties.Aerosol remote sensing from multi-angle radiometric-only observations enables aerosol characterization to a greater degree than single-view radiometers, as demonstrated by nearly two decades of heritage instruments. Adding polarimetry to the multi-angle observations allows for the retrieval of aerosol optical depth, Angstrom exponent,parameters of size distribution, measures of aerosol absorption, complex refractive index and degree of non-sphericity of the particles, as demonstrated by two independent retrieval algorithms applied to the heritage POLarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectance (POLDER) instrument. The reason why this detailed particle characterization is possible is because a multi-angle polarimeter measurement contains twice the number of Degrees of Freedom of Signal (DFS) compared to an observation from a single-view radiometer. The challenges of making use of this information content involve separating surface signal from atmospheric signal, especially when the surface is optically complex and especially in the ultraviolet portion of the spectrum where we show the necessity of polarization in making that separation. The path forward is likely to involve joint retrievalsthat will simultaneously retrieve aerosol and surface properties, although advances will berequired in radiative transfer modeling and in representing optically complex constituents in those models. Another challenge is in having the processing capability that can keep pace with the output of these instruments in an operational environment. Yet, preliminaryalgorithms applied to airborne multi-angle polarimeter observations offer encouraging results that demonstrate the advantages of these instruments to retrieve aerosol layer height, particle single scattering albedo, size distribution and spectral optical depth, and also show the necessity of polarization measurements, not just multi-angle radiometricmeasurements, to achieve these results.

Evaluation of the Snow Albedo Retrieved from the Snow Kernel Improved the Ross-Roujean BRDF Model

The original kernel-driven bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) models were developed based on soil-vegetation systems. To further improve the ability of the models to characterize the snow surface scattering properties, a snow kernel was derived from the asymptotic radiative transfer (ART) model and used in the kernel-driven BRDF model framework. However, there is a need to further evaluate the influence of using this snow kernel to improve the original kernel-driven models in snow albedo retrieval applications. The aim of this study is to perform such an evaluation using a variety of snow BRDF data. The RossThick-Roujean (RTR) model is used as a framework for taking in the new snow kernel (hereafter named the RTS model) since the Roujean geometric-optical (GO) kernel captures a neglectable hotspot effect and represents a more prominent dome-shaped BRDF, especially at a small solar zenith angle (SZA). We obtained the following results: (1) The RTR model has difficulties in reconstructing the snow BRDF shape, especially at large SZAs, which tends to underestimate the reflectance in the forward direction and overestimate reflectance in the backward direction for various data sources. In comparison, the RTS model performs very well in fitting snow BRDF data and shows high accuracy for all data. (2) The RTR model retrieved snow albedos at SZAs = 30°–70° are underestimated by 0.71% and 0.69% in the red and near-infrared (NIR) bands, respectively, compared with the simulation results of the bicontinuous photon tracking (bic-PT) model, which serve as “real” values. However, the albedo retrieved by the RTS model is significantly improved and generally agrees well with the simulation results of the bic-PT model, although the improved model still somewhat underestimates the albedo by 0.01% in the red band and overestimates the albedo by 0.05% in the NIR band, respectively, at SZAs = 30°–70°, which may be negligible. (3) The albedo derived by these two models shows a high correlation (R2 > 0.9) between the field-measured and Polarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances (POLDER) data, especially for the black-sky albedo. However, the albedo derived using the RTR model is significantly underestimated compared with the RTS model. The RTR model underestimates the black-sky albedo (white-sky albedo) retrievals by 0.62% (1.51%) and 0.93% (2.08%) in the red and NIR bands, respectively, for the field-measured data. The shortwave black-sky and white-sky albedos derived using the RTR model for the POLDER data are underestimated by 1.43% and 1.54%, respectively, compared with the RTS model. These results indicate that the snow kernel in the kernel-driven BRDF model frame is more accurate in snow albedo retrievals and has the potential for application in the field of the regional and global energy budget.
