An improved algorithm of cloud droplet size distribution from POLDER polarized measurements

The Polarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances (POLDER) instrument provides unique cloud droplet radius (CDR) and effective variance (EV) observations for the analysis of clouds on the global scale. However, the cloud droplet size distribution estimated using the conventional POLDER algorithm is limited by its coarse spatial resolution (150 km) and insufficient information for large droplets (CDR > 15 μm). In this study, we proposed an improved primary cloudbow retrieval (PCR) algorithm to estimate CDR and EV from POLDER. Simulated retrievals based on a radiative transfer model indicate that primary cloudbow measurements are sensitive to large droplets (CDR > 15 μm) and enable the retrieval to be applied at a higher spatial resolution; therefore, we employ POLDER polarized measurements from both primary and supernumerary cloudbow regions in the PCR algorithm. Retrieval cases using POLDER measurements reveal that the PCR algorithm is robust when the cloud fields are homogeneous. When the cloud field is heterogeneous, the estimation of CDR is sensitive to the scattering angle ranges as well as the grid size, with uncertainty <1 μm. In addition, a spatial resolution of 40–60 km is suitable for the PCR algorithm based on the relationship between the retrieval grid size and the total successful retrievals. Further comparisons between the PCR retrievals and operational products are conducted on the global scale using POLDER measurements for February, May, August and November 2008, revealing that PCR retrievals agree well with operational products on the global scale as CDR < 15 μm. Our analysis indicates that most of the large droplets estimated using the conventional procedure are overestimated due to the absence of primary cloudbow measurements. The PCR algorithm permits an extended range of CDR (3–25 μm) and EV (0.01–0.29) estimates and a higher resolution (40–60 km) in the retrieval.

The influence of spatial resolution on the angular variation patterns of optical reflectance as retrieved from MODIS and POLDER measurements

Multiangle remote sensing plays a central role in the development of algorithms for the retrieval of various surface biophysical parameters that are influenced by the reflectance anisotropy. Surface reflectance anisotropy is characterized by the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF). Within the past decade, space-borne multiangle observations acquired by the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor (which has a gridded spatial resolution of 500 m) and by the POLarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances (POLDER) sensor (which has a spatial resolution of 6 × 7 km) have been used for a wide variety of global applications. However, it is necessary to fully understand the variability inherent in the surface BRDF information as retrieved from MODIS and POLDER at these two spatial resolutions to optimize their use. In this study, we make use of extensive POLDER Bidirectional Reflectance Factors (BRFs) selected from the entire archive of the POLDER BRDF database and standard MODIS BRDF parameter products (MCD43A1, Collection V005) that were geolocated within the same spatial extents as the POLDER data. The variability in surface BRDF is characterized by investigation of three BRDF model parameters as retrieved from MODIS and POLDER and a comprehensive index indicating the variations in the primary dome-bowl BRDF patterns (the anisotropic flat index (AFX)). The principal information content contained in these BRDF data is characterized by the general BRDF shapes (the BRDF archetypes) that account for >90% of the total variance in these BRDF data. A hotspot-revised BRDF model is used directly on top of the retrieved model BRDF parameters to capture the hotspot effect associated with these BRDF parameters. The main findings of this study show that the variability in surface BRDF, as extracted from the MODIS and POLDER datasets, shares six reciprocal BRDF archetypes. However, the 500-m MODIS BRDF data can uniquely capture some additional extreme BRDF shapes mainly due to the data's finer pixel scales. These original findings are very important, because subsequent albedo retrievals can be significantly impacted by the use of BRDFs of different resolutions. This study provides evidence concerning the influence of spatial resolution on angular variation patterns of optical reflectance as retrieved from the MODIS and POLDER BRDF products.

Simulation of Optical Properties and Direct and Indirect Radiative Effects of Smoke Aerosols Over Marine Stratocumulus Clouds During Summer 2008 in California With the Regional Climate Model RegCM

AbstractThe regional climate model RegCM has been modified to better account for the climatic effects of biomass‐burning particles. Smoke aerosols are represented by new tracers with consistent radiative and hygroscopic properties to simulate the direct radiative forcing (DRF), and a new parameterization has been integrated for relating the droplet number concentration to the aerosol concentration for marine stratocumulus clouds (Sc). RegCM has been tested during the summer of 2008 over California, when extreme concentration of smoke, together with the presence of Sc, is observed. This work indicates that significant aerosol optical depth (AOD) (~1–2 at 550 nm) is related to the intense 2008 fires. Compared to Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, the regional pattern of RegCM AOD is well represented although the magnitude is lower than satellite observations. Comparisons with Polarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances (POLDER) above‐clouds aerosol optical depth (ACAOD) show the ability of RegCM to simulate realistic ACAOD during the transport of smoke above the Pacific Ocean. The simulated single scattering albedo is ~0.90 (at 550 nm) near biomass‐burning sources, consistent with OMI and POLDER, and smoke leads to shortwave heating rates ~1.5–2°K d−1. RegCM is not able to correctly resolve the daily patterns in cloud properties notably due to its coarse horizontal resolutions. However, the changes in the sign of the DRF at top of atmosphere (TOA) (negative to positive) from clear‐sky to all‐sky conditions is well simulated. Finally, the “aerosol‐cloud” parameterization allows simulating an increase of the cloud optical depth for significant concentrations, leading to large perturbations of radiative fluxes at TOA.

Assessment of the aerosol optical depths measured by satellite-based passive remote sensors in the Alberta oil sands region

Abstract. Several satellite aerosol optical depth (AOD) products are assessed in terms of their data quality in the Alberta oil sands region. The instruments consist of MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer), POLDER (Polarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances), MISR (Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer), and AATSR (Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer). The AOD data products are examined in terms of multiplicative and additive biases determined using local Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) (AEROCAN) stations. Correlation with ground-based data is used to assess whether the satellite-based AODs capture day-to-day, month-to-month, and spatial variability. The ability of the satellite AOD products to capture interannual variability is assessed at Albian mine and Shell Muskeg River, two neighbouring sites in the northern mining region where a statistically significant positive trend (2002–2015) in PM2.5 mass density exists. An increasing trend of similar amplitude (∼ 5 % year−1) is observed in this northern mining region using some of the satellite AOD products.

Global detection of absorbing aerosols over the ocean in the red and near‐infrared spectral region

AbstractThe spatial and temporal variability of the aerosol single scattering albedo (SSA at 865 nm) has been estimated over clear‐sky ocean for 2006 by using measurements acquired by POLDER (Polarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances). Our estimates are correlated with Sun photometer retrievals (R = 0.63). Differences in SSA are generally around 0.05 and systematically fall below 0.055 for optical thicknesses ≥0.3 (at 865 nm) and modeling errors ≤3.0%. Fine absorbing aerosols (radius ≤ 0.16 μm) are detected in many coastal regions. The lowest SSAs are retrieved over the southeast Atlantic during summer (0.80), whereas nonabsorbing fine particles (≥0.98) are observed over the North Pacific. During winter, fine absorbing aerosols are detected together with mineral dust near the coasts of western Africa (0.90), over the tropical Atlantic (0.88), and around India (0.88). Long‐range transport of absorbing species is also detected, as for instance over the Arctic. This study could help to constrain aerosol absorption and radiative forcing in models.

Comparison of aerosol optical properties above clouds between POLDER and AeroCom models over the South East Atlantic Ocean during the fire season

AbstractAerosol properties above clouds have been retrieved over the South East Atlantic Ocean during the fire season 2006 using satellite observations from POLDER (Polarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances). From June to October, POLDER has observed a mean Above‐Cloud Aerosol Optical Thickness (ACAOT) of 0.28 and a mean Above‐Clouds Single Scattering Albedo (ACSSA) of 0.87 at 550 nm. These results have been used to evaluate the simulation of aerosols above clouds in five Aerosol Comparisons between Observations and Models (Goddard Chemistry Aerosol Radiation and Transport (GOCART), Hadley Centre Global Environmental Model 3 (HadGEM3), European Centre Hamburg Model 5‐Hamburg Aerosol Module 2 (ECHAM5‐HAM2), Oslo‐Chemical Transport Model 2 (OsloCTM2), and Spectral Radiation‐Transport Model for Aerosol Species (SPRINTARS)). Most models do not reproduce the observed large aerosol load episodes. The comparison highlights the importance of the injection height and the vertical transport parameterizations to simulate the large ACAOT observed by POLDER. Furthermore, POLDER ACSSA is best reproduced by models with a high imaginary part of black carbon refractive index, in accordance with recent recommendations.

Retrieval of the Eyjafjallajökull volcanic aerosol optical and microphysical properties from POLDER/PARASOL measurements

Abstract. Total and polarized radiances provided by the Polarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances (POLDER) satellite sensor are used to retrieve the microphysical and optical properties of the volcanic plume observed during the Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption in 2010, over cloud-free and cloudy ocean scenes. We selected two plume conditions, fresh aerosols near the sources (three cases) and a downwind volcanic plume observed over the North Sea 30 h after its injection into the atmosphere (aged aerosols). In the near-source conditions, the aerosol properties depend on the distance to the plume. Within the near-source plume, aerosols are mainly non-spherical and in the coarse mode with an effective radius equal to 1.75 (±0.25) μm and an Ångström exponent (AE) close to 0.0. Far from the plume, in addition to the coarse mode, there are particles retrieved in the accumulation mode, suggesting a mixture of sulfate aerosols and volcanic dust, resulting in an AE around 0.8. The properties of the aerosols also depend on whether the plume is fresh or aged. For the downwind (aged) plume, if non-spherical coarse particles as well as some fine mode particles are retrieved, the AE is higher, around ~0.4. In addition, rather low values for the real part of the refractive index (RR) were retrieved for the fresh plume (1.38 &lt; RR &lt; 1.48). Single scattering albedo (SSA) values ranging between 0.92 and 0.98 were retrieved over some parts of the near-source plume; despite the low accuracy of our retrievals, the derived SSA values suggest that the ash particles are rather absorbing. To consider the particle shape, a combination of spheroid models was used. Although the employed model enabled accurate modeling of the POLDER signal in the case of non-spherical ash, our approach failed to model the signal over the optically thickest parts of the near-source plume. The most probable reason for this is the presence of ice crystals within the plume. For the aerosol above clouds (AAC) scenes, polarized measurements allowed the retrieval of the optical thickness (OT) and the AE of optically thin volcanic ash. We found that all the cloud parameters retrieved by passive sensors were biased due to the presence of the elevated volcanic plumes. Finally, thermal infrared measurements were used to identify the type of multilayer scene (cirrus clouds or volcanic dust above liquid clouds) and the retrieval method also provided the OT of thin cirrus layers above the clouds near Iceland.

How do A‐train sensors intercompare in the retrieval of above‐cloud aerosol optical depth? A case study‐based assessment

AbstractWe intercompare the above‐cloud aerosol optical depth (ACAOD) of biomass burning plumes retrieved from A‐train sensors, i.e., Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Cloud‐Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP), Polarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances (POLDER), and Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI). These sensors have shown independent capabilities to retrieve aerosol loading above marine boundary layer clouds—a kind of situation often found over the southeast Atlantic Ocean during dry burning season. A systematic comparison reveals that all passive sensors and CALIOP‐based research methods derive comparable ACAOD with differences mostly within 0.2 over homogeneous cloud fields. The 532 nm ACAOD retrieved by CALIOP operational algorithm is underestimated. The retrieved 1064 nm AOD however shows closer agreement with passive sensors. Given the different types of measurements processed with different algorithms, the reported close agreement between them is encouraging. Due to unavailability of direct measurements above cloud, the validation of satellite‐based ACAOD remains an open challenge. The intersatellite comparison however can be useful for the relative evaluation and consistency check.

Retrieving vegetation clumping index from Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) data at 275 m resolution

Clumping index, the measure of foliage grouping relative to a random distribution of leaves in space, is a key structural parameter of plant canopies that influences canopy radiation regimes and controls canopy photosynthesis and other land–atmosphere interactions. In this study, we retrieve the clumping index using the original 275m resolution data of the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instrument over a set of sites representing diverse biomes and different canopy structures. Also for the first time, the MISR derived clumping index values are directly validated with both in-situ vertical profiles and seasonal trajectories of clumping index. Our results illustrate that MISR data with 275m allow clumping index estimates at much more pertinent scales (both spatial and temporal) than previous maps from Polarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances (POLDER) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) for modeling local carbon and energy fluxes.

Retrieval of aerosol microphysical and optical properties above liquid clouds from POLDER/PARASOL polarization measurements

Abstract. Most of the current aerosol retrievals from passive sensors are restricted to cloud-free scenes, which strongly reduces our ability to monitor the aerosol properties at a global scale and to estimate their radiative forcing. The presence of aerosol above clouds (AAC) affects the polarized light reflected by the cloud layer, as shown by the spaceborne measurements provided by the POlarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances (POLDER) instrument on the PARASOL satellite. In a previous work, a first retrieval method was developed for AAC scenes and evaluated for biomass-burning aerosols transported over stratocumulus clouds. The method was restricted to the use of observations acquired at forward scattering angles (90–120°) where polarized measurements are highly sensitive to fine-mode particle scattering. Non-spherical particles in the coarse mode, such as mineral dust particles, do not much polarize light and cannot be handled with this method. In this paper, we present new developments that allow retrieving also the properties of mineral dust particles above clouds. These particles do not much polarize light but strongly reduce the polarized cloud bow generated by the liquid cloud layer beneath and observed for scattering angles around 140°. The spectral attenuation can be used to qualitatively identify the nature of the particles (i.e. accumulation mode versus coarse mode, i.e. mineral dust particles versus biomass-burning aerosols), whereas the magnitude of the attenuation is related to the optical thickness of the aerosol layer. We also use the polarized measurements acquired in the cloud bow to improve the retrieval of both the biomass-burning aerosol properties and the cloud microphysical properties. We provide accurate polarized radiance calculations for AAC scenes and evaluate the contribution of the POLDER polarization measurements for the simultaneous retrieval of the aerosol and cloud properties. We investigate various scenes with mineral dust particles and biomass-burning aerosols above clouds. For clouds, our results confirm that the droplet size distribution is narrow in high-latitude ocean regions and that the droplet effective radii retrieved from both polarization measurements and from total radiance measurements are generally close for AAC scenes (departures smaller than 2 μm). We found that the magnitude of the primary cloud bow cannot be accurately estimated with a plane parallel transfer radiative code. The errors for the modeling of the polarized cloud bow are between 4 and 8% for homogenous cloudy scenes, as shown by a 3-D radiative transfer code. These effects only weakly impact the retrieval of the Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) performed with a mineral dust particle model for which the microphysical properties are entirely known (relative error smaller than 6%). We show that the POLDER polarization measurements allow retrieving the AOT, the fine-mode particle size, the Ångström exponent and the fraction of spherical particles. However, the complex refractive index and the coarse-mode particle size cannot be accurately retrieved with the present polarization measurements. Our complete and accurate algorithm cannot be applied to process large amounts of data, so a simpler algorithm was developed to retrieve the AOT and the Ångström exponent above clouds in an operational way. Illustrations are provided for July–August 2008 near the African coast. Large mean AOTs above clouds at 0.865 μm (&gt;0.3) are retrieved for oceanic regions near the coasts of South Africa that correspond to biomass-burning aerosols, whereas even larger mean AOTs above clouds for mineral dust particles (&gt;0.6) are also retrieved near the coasts of Senegal. For these regions and time period, the direct AAC radiative forcing is likely to be significant. The final aim of this work is the global monitoring of the AAC properties and the estimation of the direct aerosol radiative forcing in cloudy scenes.

Remote sensing of aerosols above cloud using polarization measurements from POLDER/PARASOL: Comparison with LIDAR caliop

Most of the current aerosol retrievals from passive sensors are restricted to cloud-free scenes, which strongly reduces our ability to monitor the aerosol properties at a global scale. The presence of aerosols above clouds affect the polarized radiation reflected by the clouds, as shown by the measurements provided by the POlarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances (POLDER) instrument. An approximate model of the polarized signal was developed and used to retrieve the Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) above clouds. Results obtained with this method in various regions of the world are presented. In a second part, we present additional results obtained with an improved method that allows the retrieval of a detailed microphysical model of the observed particles. The retrieved POLDER AOTs are compared to AOTs retrieved by a spaceborne lidar in case of a dust layer transported above clouds. The advantages and limitations of the different methods are discussed.

Examination of POLDER/PARASOL and MODIS/Aqua Cloud Fractions and Properties Representativeness

Abstract The Polarization and Anisotropy of Reflectances for Atmospheric Sciences Coupled with Observations from a Lidar (PARASOL) and Aqua are two satellites on sun-synchronous orbits in the A-Train constellation. Aboard these two platforms, the Polarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances (POLDER) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) provide quasi simultaneous and coincident observations of cloud properties. The similar orbits but different detecting characteristics of these two sensors call for a comparison between the derived datasets to identify and quantify potential uncertainties in retrieved cloud properties. To focus on the differences due to different sensor spatial resolution and coverage, while minimizing sampling and weighting issues, the authors have recomputed monthly statistics directly from the respective official level-2 products. The authors have developed a joint dataset that contains both POLDER and MODIS level-2 cloud products collocated on a common sinusoidal grid. The authors have then computed and analyzed monthly statistics of cloud fractions corresponding either to the total cloud cover or to the “retrieved” cloud fraction for which cloud optical properties are derived. These simple yet crucial cloud statistics need to be clearly understood to allow further comparison work of the other cloud parameters. From this study, it is demonstrated that on average POLDER and MODIS datasets capture correctly the main characteristics of global cloud cover and provide similar spatial distributions and temporal variations. However, each sensor has its own advantages and weaknesses in discriminating between clear and cloudy skies in particular situations. Also it is shown that significant differences exist between the MODIS total cloud fraction (day mean) and the “retrieved” cloud fraction (combined mean). This study found a global negative difference of about 10% between POLDER and MODIS day-mean cloud fraction. On the contrary, a global positive difference of about 10% exists between POLDER and MODIS combined-mean cloud fraction. These statistical biases show both global and regional distributions that can be driven by sensors characteristics, environmental factors, and also carry potential information on cloud cover structure. These results provide information on the quality of cloud cover derived from POLDER and MODIS and should be taken into account for the use of other cloud products.

Aerosol Remote Sensing over Clouds Using A-Train Observations

Abstract The detection of aerosol above clouds is critical for the estimate of both the aerosol and cloud radiative impacts. In this study, the authors present a new method to retrieve the aerosol properties over clouds that uses the multiangle polarization measurements of the Polarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances (POLDER)–Polarization and Anisotropy of Reflectances for Atmospheric Sciences Coupled with Observations from a Lidar (PARASOL) instrument. The method is illustrated and applied to a case study exploiting the coincident observations from other passive and active sensors of the NASA A-Train satellite constellation. The case study is relative to an elevated biomass burning aerosol layer that originates from southern Africa and is then transported over low-level clouds extending over the Atlantic Ocean. It is shown that the comparison between the cloud-top heights retrieved with the different passive techniques developed for the A-Train sensors can be used to detect the presence of aerosols above clouds. The analysis of the PARASOL observations showed that the aerosols significantly affect the polarized light reflected by the clouds over the 80°–120° scattering angle range and in the rainbow region. A single scattering model permitted the reproduction of the polarization observations and the retrieval of an estimate of the aerosol layer optical thickness of 0.225 at 0.865 μm. The retrieved aerosol optical thicknesses over clouds agree quantitatively with the closest ones retrieved over clear-sky ocean (±0.04 as a maximum departure), demonstrating the value of the method. This innovative technique based solely on passive measurements is expected to provide a better understanding of aerosol properties in regions where significant cloud cover usually prevents the retrieval of aerosol optical thickness. As such, this new retrieval method can provide significant and valuable information about the radiative impact of clouds and aerosols, especially where they can potentially interact strongly with each other.

An improved derivation of the top‐of‐atmosphere albedo from POLDER/ADEOS‐2: 2. Broadband albedo

The narrowband albedos derived from Polarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances (POLDER) measurements have been described in a companion paper (Buriez et al., 2005). Here, they are used to estimate the broadband shortwave albedo. Except for the gaseous absorption, the albedos at 443 and 670 nm are considered as representative of the UV‐visible range, and the albedo at 865 nm is considered as representative of the near infrared. The gaseous absorption is estimated from TOMS data and from the POLDER 910‐ to 865‐nm reflectance ratio. In a previous approach, the respective weights of the three narrowband albedos were based on radiative transfer simulations. Now, we take advantage of spatiotemporal coincidences between the second Advanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS‐2) and Terra to adjust these weights from the comparison between POLDER narrowband and CERES broadband reflectances. With no adjustment, the POLDER albedos are underestimated by 2% (in relative value) whereas the associated reflectances are underestimated by 4%. With an adjustment to the CERES reflectances, the POLDER shortwave albedos are overestimated by 2%. With or without adjustment the RMS difference between the POLDER and the CERES 1°‐regional instantaneous shortwave albedos is 6%; this is quite satisfactory since it is comparable to the CERES SW albedo consistency between nadir and oblique viewing zenith angles. When considering only homogeneous areas, the agreement between POLDER and CERES estimates was rather less good in the previous approach; it is now more than twice better. The difference between POLDER and CERES shortwave albedo estimates appears, for a large part, due to our plane‐parallel assumption that is crucial for the heterogeneous liquid water clouds. It results in a bias in monthly mean shortwave flux around 2 W m−2 that is found to present only small variations in latitude.

One‐dimensional variational retrieval of aerosol extinction coefficient from synthetic LIDAR and radiometric measurements

The Cloud and Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) [onboard the Cloud‐Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) platform] and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument (onboard the AQUA platform) will provide simultaneous measurements as part of the “AQUA‐train,” thus offering a unique opportunity to improve our knowledge on aerosol properties and their spatial distribution. Here we investigate to which extent both the vertical distribution of the aerosol extinction coefficient and the aerosol bimodal size distribution can be retrieved from a synergetic use of the vertically‐resolved lidar signal and the spectral radiance measurements. To this effect, a variational retrieval scheme based on a simplified radiative transfer model was developed. The extinction‐coefficient profile for fine and coarse‐mode aerosols was retrieved from synthetic observations of the profile of the attenuated backscatter lidar signal at two wavelengths and radiances at six wavelengths. Our method aims at minimizing a cost function which measures the departure of the solution to the observations. The adjoint method was applied to find the gradient of the cost function with respect to the input parameters. The retrieval scheme was tested under a realistic noise level and different microphysical perturbations. The retrieval of extinction‐coefficient profiles, for fine and coarse particles, is successful if there is a predominance of fine particles. If coarse particles dominate over fine ones, the scheme retrieves the profile of the total extinction coefficient with a higher confidence than that of the fine mode. When perturbations on the aerosol microphysical properties are introduced, thus simulating a more challenging case with incomplete information of the aerosol model present in the atmosphere, the scheme shows a very good performance in terms of total extinction‐coefficient retrieval but less success for individual modes. It retrieves the modal radii for both modes simultaneously but can not retrieve at the same time the refractive index and true‐mode radii for both modes. Results also reveal that there is some prospect for improvement in the quality of the retrieval by either increasing the size of the predefined set of aerosol models or by including other sources of independent information such as Polarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances (POLDER)‐like measurements.

Rainbows, Polarization, and the Search for Habitable Planets

Current proposals for the characterization of extrasolar terrestrial planets rest primarily on the use of spectroscopic techniques. While spectroscopy is effective in detecting the gaseous components of a planet's atmosphere, it provides no way of detecting the presence of liquid water, the defining characteristic of a habitable planet. In this paper, I investigate the potential of an alternative technique for characterizing the atmosphere of a planet using polarization. By looking for a polarization peak at the "primary rainbow" scattering angle, it is possible to detect the presence of liquid droplets in a planet's atmosphere and constrain the nature of the liquid through its refractive index. Single scattering calculations are presented to show that a well-defined rainbow scattering peak is present over the full range of likely cloud droplet sizes and clearly distinguishes the presence of liquid droplets from solid particles such as ice or dust. Rainbow scattering has been used in the past to determine the nature of the cloud droplets in the Venus atmosphere and by the POLarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances (POLDER) instrument to distinguish between liquid and ice clouds in the Earth atmosphere. While the presence of liquid water clouds does not guarantee the presence of water at the surface, this technique could complement spectroscopic techniques for characterizing the atmospheres of potential habitable planets. The disk-integrated rainbow peak for Earth is estimated to be at a degree of polarization of 12.7% or 15.5% for two different cloud cover scenarios. The observation of this rainbow peak is shown to be feasible with the proposed Terrestrial Planet Finder Coronograph mission in similar total integration times to those required for spectroscopic characterization.

Using multi‐directional high‐resolution imagery from POLDER sensor to retrieve leaf area index

Multi‐directional satellite optical imagery collected at high spatial resolution potentially allows improving the accuracy of biophysical variable retrieval. The improvements result from the inclusion of the directional anisotropy of the target, which provides additional information related to vegetation structural properties. The research presented here analyses airborne imagery and ground reference data in order to quantify the accuracy of the retrieval methods for LAI (leaf area index). Both variables are estimated through processing of airborne POLDER (POLarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances) sensor images from an agricultural area. In a first step, the BRDF (Bi‐directional Reflectance Distribution Function) of the surface is estimated using a simple parametric model, whose parameters where derived from fitting POLDER BRF (Bi‐directional Reflectance Factor) measurements. LAI estimation was performed using two different approaches, both based on an artificial neural network designed to invert a 1D soil‐vegetation radiative transfer model. The difference between the two methods is that one of them uses only the isotropic component of the BRDF parametric model and the other the full BRDF information, i.e. adding the anisotropic components. The algorithm using isotropic information shows a clear improvement when compared to semi‐empirical approaches. Root mean square error between estimated and ground measured LAI values is 0.87. However, the method using the full BRDF information yielded poorer estimates, pointing out the difficulty of fully exploiting the multi-directional information. The performance decrease is partially explained by the incoherence between real and modelled BRDF measurements.

Characterization of aerosol pollution events in France using ground-based and POLDER-2 satellite data

Abstract. We analyze the relationship between daily fine particle mass concentration (PM2.5) and columnar aerosol optical thickness derived from the Polarization and Directionality of Earth's Reflectances (POLDER) satellite sensor. The study is focused over France during the POLDER-2 lifetime between April and October 2003. We have first compared the POLDER derived aerosol optical thickness (AOT) with integrated volume size distribution derived from ground-based Sun Photometer observations. The good correlation (R=0.72) with sub-micron volume fraction indicates that POLDER derived AOT is sensitive to the fine aerosol mass concentration. Considering 1974 match-up data points over 28 fine particle monitoring sites, the POLDER-2 derived AOT is fairly well correlated with collocated PM2.5 measurements, with a correlation coefficient of 0.55. The correlation coefficient reaches a maximum of 0.80 for particular sites. We have analyzed the probability to find an appropriate air quality category (AQC) as defined by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from POLDER-2 AOT measurements. The probability can be up to 88.8% (±3.7%) for the "Good" AQC and 89.1% (±3.6%) for the "Moderate" AQC.

Improving global scale land cover classifications with multi-directional POLDER data and a decision tree classifier

Several investigations indicate that the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) contains information that can be used to complement spectral information for improved land cover classification accuracies. Prior studies on the addition of BRDF information to improve land cover classifications have been conducted primarily at local or regional scales. Thus, the potential benefits of adding BRDF information to improve global to continental scale land cover classification have not yet been explored. Here we examine the impact of multidirectional global scale data from the first Polarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances (POLDER) spacecraft instrument flown on the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS-1) platform on overall classification accuracy and per-class accuracies for 15 land cover categories specified by the International Geosphere Biosphere Programme (IGBP). A set of 36,648 global training pixels (7 × 6 km spatial resolution) was used with a decision tree classifier to evaluate the performance of classifying POLDER data with and without the inclusion of BRDF information. BRDF ‘metrics’ for the eight-month POLDER on ADEOS-1 archive (10/1996–06/1997) were developed that describe the temporal evolution of the BRDF as captured by a semi-empirical BRDF model. The concept of BRDF ‘feature space’ is introduced and used to explore and exploit the bidirectional information content. The C5.0 decision tree classifier was applied with a boosting option, with the temporal metrics for spectral albedo as input for a first test, and with spectral albedo and BRDF metrics for a second test. Results were evaluated against 20 random subsets of the training data. Examination of the BRDF feature space indicates that coarse scale BRDF coefficients from POLDER provide information on land cover that is different from the spectral and temporal information of the imagery. The contribution of BRDF information to reducing classification errors is also demonstrated: the addition of BRDF metrics reduces the mean, overall classification error rates by 3.15% (from 18.1% to 14.95% error) with larger improvements for producer's accuracies of individual classes such as Grasslands (+ 8.71%), Urban areas (+ 8.02%), and Wetlands (+ 7.82%). User's accuracies for the Urban (+ 7.42%) and Evergreen Broadleaf Forest (+ 6.70%) classes are also increased. The methodology and results are widely applicable to current multidirectional satellite data from the Multi-angle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR), and to the next generation of POLDER-like multi-directional instruments.

An “A-Train” Strategy for Quantifying Direct Climate Forcing by Anthropogenic Aerosols

This document outlines a practical strategy for achieving an observationally based quantification of direct climate forcing by anthropogenic aerosols. The strategy involves a four-step program for shifting the current assumption-laden estimates to an increasingly empirical basis using satellite observations coordinated with suborbital remote and in situ measurements and with chemical transport models. Conceptually, the problem is framed as a need for complete global mapping of four parameters: clear-sky aerosol optical depth δ, radiative efficiency per unit optical depth E, fine-mode fraction of optical depth ff, and the anthropogenic fraction of the fine mode faf. The first three parameters can be retrieved from satellites, but correlative, suborbital measurements are required for quantifying the aerosol properties that control E, for validating the retrieval of ff, and for partitioning fine-mode δ between natural and anthropogenic components. The satellite focus is on the “A-Train,” a constellation of six spacecraft that will fly in formation from about 2005 to 2008. Key satellite instruments for this report are the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) radiometers on Aqua, the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) radiometer on Aura, the Polarization and Directionality of Earth's Reflectances (POLDER) polarimeter on the Polarization and Anistropy of Reflectances for Atmospheric Sciences Coupled with Observations from a Lidar (PARASOL), and the Cloud and Aerosol Lider with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) lidar on the Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO). This strategy is offered as an initial framework—subject to improvement over time—for scientists around the world to participate in the A-Train opportunity. It is a specific implementation of the Progressive Aerosol Retrieval and Assimilation Global Observing Network (PARAGON) program, presented earlier in this journal, which identified the integration of diverse data as the central challenge to progress in quantifying global-scale aerosol effects. By designing a strategy around this need for integration, we develop recommendations for both satellite data interpretation and correlative suborbital activities that represent, in many respects, departures from current practice
