Numerical study of the second harmonic generation in FELs

A numerical study of the effect of betatron oscillations on the second harmonic generation in free-electron lasers (FELs) is presented. Analytical expressions for the effective coupling strength factors are derived that clearly distinguish all contributions in subharmonics and each polarization of the radiation. A three-dimensional time-dependent numerical FEL code that takes into account the main FEL effects and the individual contribution of each electron to the second harmonic generation is presented. Also, the X- and Y-polarizations of the second harmonic are analyzed. The second harmonic was detected in experiments at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) Low Energy Undulator Test Line (LEUTL) and Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) in the soft X-ray regime. The approach presented in the article can be useful for a comprehensive study and diagnostics of XFELs. In the paper, the LCLS and Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL) experiments are modeled. The simulation results are in a good agreement with the experimental data.

Intensity optimization of x-ray free-electron laser by using phase shifters

This paper presents a method that uses a gap scan of the phase shifter to optimize the intensity of a free-electron laser (FEL) by matching its phase with that of the electron beam. Phase shifters are essential instruments, especially for a long undulator line, which is segmented by drift sections. The phase-matched (in-phase) and the 180\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} offset (out-of-phase) conditions are investigated using linear theory, FEL simulations, and experiments to understand how the phase shifter affects FEL amplification. We show that the FEL intensity is dominantly reduced by phase mismatch in the saturation region, where the microbunched electron beam is sufficiently developed, and that the difference of FEL intensity between the in-phase and out-of-phase conditions is an effect of evolution of the bunching factor. At the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory x-ray Free-Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL), the gap scan of the phase shifter at 9.7 keV increased FEL intensity by 4 times compared to the calculated gap of the phase shifter. This intensity increase was obtained dominantly in the saturation region.

ClickX: a visualization-based program for preprocessing of serial crystallography data.

Serial crystallography is a powerful technique in structure determination using many small crystals at X-ray free-electron laser or synchrotron radiation facilities. The large diffraction data volumes require high-throughput software to preprocess the raw images for subsequent analysis. ClickX is a program designated for serial crystallography data preprocessing, capable of rapid data sorting for online feedback and peak-finding refinement by parameter optimization. The graphical user interface (GUI) provides convenient access to various operations such as pattern visualization, statistics plotting and parameter tuning. A batch job module is implemented to facilitate large-data-volume processing. A two-step geometry calibration for single-panel detectors is also integrated into the GUI, where the beam center and detector tilting angles are optimized using an ellipse center shifting method first, then all six parameters, including the photon energy and detector distance, are refined together using a residual minimization method. Implemented in Python, ClickX has good portability and extensibility, so that it can be installed, configured and used on any computing platform that provides a Python interface or common data file format. ClickX has been tested in online analysis at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser, Korea, and the Linac Coherent Light Source, USA. It has also been applied in post-experimental data analysis. The source code is available via https://github.com/LiuLab-CSRC/ClickX under a GNU General Public License.

Laser systems for time-resolved experiments at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser beamlines.

Optical laser systems for ultrafast X-ray sciences have been established at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL) beamlines. Three Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier systems are synchronized to the XFEL with femtosecond precision, and the low temporal jitter of the PAL-XFEL results in an experimental time resolution below 150 fs (full width at half-maximum). A fundamental wave and its harmonics are currently provided for all beamlines, and tunable sources from ultraviolet to near-infrared are available for one beamline. The position stability of the optical laser extracted from the intensity-based center of mass at the sample position is less than 3% (r.m.s.) of the spot size.

Design of a High-Efficiency S-band Klystron with a Multi-cell Output Cavity

As large-scale scientific facilities develop, the klystron efficiency becomes an important issue to reduce high operating costs. We are developing high-efficiency klystrons for the Pohang Light Source-II (PLS-II) and the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL) at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL). The newly developed klystrons should have the same specifications, including perveance and overall length, to replace existing ones. Under these limited conditions, we designed the klystrons based on a multi-cell output cavity to improve the power-conversion efficiency significatly. We simulated the beam-dynamics using the Field Charge Interaction (FCI) code with a MATLAB script to find the optimum design parameters for high efficiency. We have determined the design parameters, such as cell tuning frequencies, inter-cell distances, couplings between cells and the Qe of the last cell, of the multi-cell output cavity.

Isolated terawatt attosecond hard X-ray pulse generated from single current spike

Isolated terawatt (TW) attosecond (as) hard X-ray pulse is greatly desired for four-dimensional investigations of natural phenomena with picometer spatial and attosecond temporal resolutions. Since the demand for such sources is continuously increasing, the possibility of generating such pulse by a single current spike without the use of optical or electron delay units in an undulator line is addressed. The conditions of a current spike (width and height) and a modulation laser pulse (wavelength and power) is also discussed. We demonstrate that an isolated TW-level as a hard X-ray can be produced by a properly chosen single current spike in an electron bunch with simulation results. By using realistic specifications of an electron bunch of the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL), we show that an isolated, >1.0 TW and ~36 as X-ray pulse at 12.4 keV can be generated in an optimized-tapered undulator line. This result opens a new vista for current XFEL operation: the attosecond XFEL.

Generation of an isolated attosecond pulse via current modulation induced by a chirped laser pulse in an x-ray free-electron laser

Aiming for the future upgrade of a hard x-ray beamline at the Pohang accelerator laboratory x-ray free-electron laser (PAL-XFEL), we first analyze the scheme recently proposed for the attosecond-terawatt (TW) x-ray pulse [Phys. Rev. Lett.110, 084801 (2013)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.110.084801]. An x-ray pulse with 32 attosecond full-width half maximum (FWHM) pulse duration and ∼4 TW in power is shown in simulations using the PAL-XFEL parameters. Furthermore, to remove neighboring radiation pulses and to generate an isolated attosecond-TW x-ray pulse, the role of optical laser frequency chirp is examined on the electron beam current modulation as well as on the x-ray pulse generation in the undulator. Our simulations show an isolated x-ray pulse with 42 attosecond FWHM pulse duration and ∼3.5 TW in power for the optimal frequency chirp of a 400 nm optical laser. Recently, in a simpler method [J. Synchrotron Radiat.23, 1273 (2016)JSYRES0909-049510.1107/S1600577516013345] and [Phys. Rev. ST Accel. Beams8, 040701 (2005)PRABFM1098-440210.1103/PhysRevSTAB.8.040701], using a frequency-chirped optical laser and the electron beam delays in between undulator sections, it has been reported that an isolated attosecond-TW x-ray pulse can be obtained at the undulator end. For optimal chirp in this simple setup, we show 50 attosecond FWHM pulse duration and ∼3 TW in power with ∼7.5×1010 photons per pulse at 0.1 nm radiation wavelength. Generation of such inherently synchronized, powerful single attosecond x-ray pulses at PAL-XFEL will be advantageous to the pump-probe experiments in the study of ultrafast dynamics.

Multifarious injection chamber for molecular structure study (MICOSS) system: development and application for serial femtosecond crystallography at Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser.

The multifarious injection chamber for molecular structure study (MICOSS) experimental system has been developed at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser for conducting serial femtosecond crystallography. This system comprises several instruments such as a dedicated sample chamber, sample injectors, sample environment diagnostic system and detector stage for convenient distance manipulation. Serial femtosecond crystallography experiments of lysozyme crystals have been conducted successfully. The diffraction peaks have reached to ∼1.8 Å resolution at the photon energy of 9.785 keV.

Focusing X-ray free-electron laser pulses using Kirkpatrick-Baez mirrors at the NCI hutch of thePAL-XFEL.

The Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL) is a recently commissioned X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) facility that provides intense ultrashort X-ray pulses based on the self-amplified spontaneous emission process. The nano-crystallography and coherent imaging (NCI) hutch with forward-scattering geometry is located at the hard X-ray beamline of the PAL-XFEL and provides opportunities to perform serial femtosecond crystallography and coherent X-ray diffraction imaging. To produce intense high-density XFEL pulses at the interaction positions between the X-rays and various samples, a microfocusing Kirkpatrick-Baez (KB) mirror system that includes an ultra-precision manipulator has been developed. In this paper, the design of a KB mirror system that focuses the hard XFEL beam onto a fixed sample point of the NCI hutch, which is positioned along the hard XFEL beamline, is described. The focusing system produces a two-dimensional focusing beam at approximately 2 µm scale across the 2-11 keV photon energy range. XFEL pulses of 9.7 keV energy were successfully focused onto an area of size 1.94 µm × 2.08 µm FWHM.

Development of new S-band RF window for stable high-power operation in linear accelerator RF system

For stable high-power operation, a new RF window is developed in the S-band linear accelerator (Linac) RF systems of the Pohang Light Source-II (PLS-II) and the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL). The new RF window is designed to mitigate the strength of the electric field at the ceramic disk and also at the waveguide-cavity coupling structure of the conventional RF window. By replacing the pill-box type cavity in the conventional RF window with an overmoded cavity, the electric field component perpendicular to the ceramic disk that caused most of the multipacting breakdowns in the ceramic disk was reduced by an order of magnitude. The reduced electric field at the ceramic disk eliminated the Ti–N coating process on the ceramic surface in the fabrication procedure of the new RF window, preventing the incomplete coating from spoiling the RF transmission and lowering the fabrication cost. The overmoded cavity was coupled with input and output waveguides through dual side-wall coupling irises to reduce the electric field strength at the waveguide-cavity coupling structure and the possibility of mode competitions in the overmoded cavity. A prototype of the new RF window was fabricated and fully tested with the Klystron peak input power, pulse duration and pulse repetition rate of 75 MW, 4.5 μs and 10 Hz, respectively, at the high-power test stand. The first mass-produced new RF window installed in the PLS-II Linac is running in normal operation mode. No fault is reported to date. Plans are being made to install the new RF window to all S-band accelerator RF modules of the PLS-II and PAL-XFEL Linacs. This new RF window may be applied to the output windows of S-band power sources like Klystron as wells as the waveguide windows of accelerator facilities which operate in S-band.

Construction and Commissioning of PAL-XFEL Facility

The construction of Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL), a 0.1-nm hard X-ray free-electron laser (FEL) facility based on a 10-GeV S-band linear accelerator (LINAC), is achieved in Pohang, Korea by the end of 2016. The construction of the 1.11 km-long building was completed by the end of 2014, and the installation of the 10-GeV LINAC and undulators started in January 2015. The installation of the 10-GeV LINAC, together with the undulators and beamlines, was completed by the end of 2015. The commissioning began in April 2016, and the first lasing of the hard X-ray FEL line was achieved on 14 June 2016. The progress of the PAL-XFEL construction and its commission are reported here.

Modified reverse tapering method to prevent frequency shift of the radiation in the planar undulator

This paper presents a modified reverse tapering method to generate a polarized soft x ray in x-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) with a higher photon power and a shorter undulator length than the simple linear reverse tapering method. In the proposed method, a few untapered planar undulators are added before the simple linear reverse tapering section of the undulator line. This simple modification prevents the frequency shift of the radiation that occurs when the simple linear reverse tapering method is applied to planar undulators. In the proposed method, the total length of planar undulators decreased in spite of the additional untapered undulators. When the modified reverse tapering method is used with four untapered planar undulators, the total length of the planar undulators is 64.6 m. On the other hand, the required length of the planar undulators is 94.6 m when the simple linear reverse tapering method is used. The proposed method gives us a way to generate a soft x-ray pulse (1.24 keV) with a high degree of polarization ($>0.99$) and radiation power ($>30\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GW}$) at the new undulator line with a 10-GeV electron beam in the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser. This method can be applied in the existing XFELs in the world without any change in the undulator lines.

S-band accelerating structures for the PAL-XFEL

One hundred seventy-two accelerating structures are required for the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray free-electron laser’s (PAL-XFEL’s) 10-GeV main linear accelerator. So far, we have purchased 80 structures from Mitsubishi Heavy Industry (MHI), which have quasi-symmetric couplers in the accelerating structure to reduce the quadruple and the sextuple components of the electric field in the coupling cavity. High-power tests have been conducted for the first structure of the MHI structure, and Research Instruments (RI) has developed a 3-m long accelerating structure that has an operating frequency of 2856 MHz and in/out couplers of quasi-symmetric racetrack shape for the PAL-XFEL linear accelerator. This structure also has been tested by PAL and RI in the Pohang accelerator laboratory (PAL) to check the maximum available electric field gradient. We will describe the test results of these structures and the current status for the fabrication of the other accelerating structures in this paper.

The effect of a radio-frequency phase of accelerating columns on the attosecond ESASE scheme

The generation of an isolated attosecond pulse at 0.1 nm has been proposed in an ESASE scheme where an 800 nm, 5 fs FWHM carrier-envelop-phase stabilized laser is employed in the 10 GeV Pohang accelerator laboratory—x-ray free electron laser (PAL-XFEL). The radio-frequency (RF) phase effect has been studied on the current profile after the chicane and on the x-ray radiation power at 50 m along the undulator. This study leads to the tolerance in the RF phase. The results show that a single isolated attosecond radiation pulse could be produced inside the undulator; however, the RF phase should be controlled down to 0.05° in the linac section of the PAL-XFEL in order to satisfy the requirement for RF jitters suitable for pump–probe experiments.
