Architectonics of Human Cerebral Fiber Systems

ABSTRACT This is a beautiful atlas of the fiber systems of the human telencephalon, concentrating naturally on the white matter of the endbrain. Its main body consists of 148 plates in collotype, partly photographs of sections, partly drawings in the excellent style of Krieg, well known from his Functional Neuroanatomy and his many previous writings on the rat and the macaque brains.The book is primarily concerned with the course and relations of the fibers rather than with the connections. It deals not only with the adult brain, but also, in great detail, with the development of the brain, starting with embryos of about 90 mm crown-rump length. Many fiber systems are much more clearly outlined in the embryo and the fetus because the myelination of the different systems occurs at different times.The text, 52 large pages, systematizes the results. Hafner Publishing Co., 31 E Tenth St, New York 3, 1963 Since Professor Conel's retirement from the Professorship of Anatomy at Boston University Medical School, he has been engaged in research on the development of the several areas of the human cerebral cortex. This is the seventh volume to appear (the first was issued in 1939). Microscopic sections of all cortical areas have been prepared by cresyl violet, Cajal and Golgi-Cox methods, and each layer of each area is appraised statistically on the basis of nine criteria. This results in an enormous amount of description and complex tables, while collotype plates illustrate the structure of each area. This volume contains a series of six studies by members of the staff of the Cajal Institute. The first study, by J. F. Tello, concerns the formation of cranial nerve ganglia and the cephalic mesectoderm of the chicken embryo. The article is illustrated by five beautiful collotype plates. The study was made by the Bielschowsky method in blocks, which shows clearly the earliest differentiations in the placodes and neural crest and their relations to the outlines of the cranial ganglia. The neuroblasts of the ganglia come from the placodes, whether epibranchial or lateral ectodermal. The cells of the neural crest may differentiate into neuroblasts, but their participation in the formation of the cranial ganglia of birds must be very slight.
