Role of Lipoprotein Ratios and Remnant Cholesterol in Patients with Myocardial Infarction with Non-Obstructive Coronary Arteries (MINOCA).

Myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA) is a clinical situation characterized by evidence of acute myocardial infarction (AMI)-according to the Fourth Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction-with normal or near-normal coronary arteries on angiographic study (stenosis < 50%). This condition is extremely variable in etiology, pathogenic mechanisms, clinical manifestations, prognosis and consequently therapeutic approach. The objective of the study was the evaluation of remnant cholesterol (RC), monocyte/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and various lipoprotein ratios in patients with MINOCA in order to establish their validity as predictors of this event. We included 114 patients hospitalized in the Intensive Coronary Care Unit (ICCU) and Hospital Wards of our Hospital Center from 2015 to 2019 who received a diagnosis of MINOCA compared to a control group of 110 patients without previous cardiovascular events. RC was calculated with the following formula: RC = total cholesterol (TC) - HDL-C - LDL-C. MHR was calculated by dividing the monocyte count in peripheral blood by high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels; PLR was obtained by dividing platelet count by lymphocyte count. We also calculated various lipoprotein ratios, like total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TC/HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C/HDL-C), triglycerides/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C), and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C/HDL-C) ratios. The MINOCA group had higher mean levels of RC (21.3 ± 10.6 vs. 13.2 ± 7.7 mg/dL), MHR (23 ± 0.009 vs. 18.5± 8.3) and PLR (179.8 ± 246.1 vs. 135 ± 64.7) than the control group. Only the mean values of all calculated lipoprotein ratios were lower in MINOCA patients. Statistical significance was achieved only in the RC evaluation. Higher levels of RC and MHR were found in patients with MINOCA. We also observed higher levels of PLR than in the control group. Only various lipoprotein ratios were lower, but this could reflect the extreme heterogeneity underlying the pathogenic mechanisms of MINOCA. In patients who receive a diagnosis of MINOCA with a baseline alteration of the lipid profile and higher levels of cholesterol at admission as well, the evaluation of these parameters could play an important role, providing more detailed information about their cardiometabolic risk.

Could Pan-Immune-Inflammation Value be a Marker for the Diagnosis of Coronary Slow Flow Phenomenon?

Inflammation plays a key role in the pathogenesis of the coronary slow flow phenomenon (CSFP). The newly developed inflammatory marker, pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV), is associated with adverse cardiovascular events. This study investigated the predictive value of PIV for diagnosing CSFP in comparison to other inflammation-based markers. A total of 214 patients, 109 in the CSFP group and 105 in the normal coronary flow (NCF) group, were retrospectively included in the study. Coronary flow was calculated using the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction frame count method. In addition to PIV, other inflammatory markers such as neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) were calculated for the patients. The average age of patients was 50.3 ± 8.4, with a male ratio of 55.1%. Compared to the NCF group, patients in the CSFP group had higher levels of hyperlipidemia, glucose, triglyceride, NLR, PLR, SII, and PIV, while their high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), was lower (p < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that HDL-C, glucose, triglyceride, and PIV were independent predictor factors for CSFP (p < 0.05). PIV is a strong and independent predictor factor for CSFP and superior in predicting CSFP compared to other inflammatory markers.

The effects of smoking cessation on the ratios of neutrophil/lymphocyte, platelet/lymphocyte, mean platelet volume/lymphocyte and monocyte/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

The amount of smoking, level of smoking addiction and smoking cessation have effects on blood cells, blood lipid levels, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), mean platelet volume (MPV)/lymphocyte ratio (MPVLR) and monocyte/high- density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio (MHR). Methods In this self-controlled experimental study, we included individuals who applied to a smoking cessation clinic and quit smoking. Their sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, the amount of cigarettes consumed (pack/year), their Fagerstrom test for nicotine dependence (FTND) results, haemogram values before and 6 months after quitting smoking, NLR, PLR, MPVLR, MHR and blood lipid levels before and after the treatment were compared retrospectively. Results The mean (SD) age of the 239 individuals who participated in the study was 41.7 (10.9) years and 55.2% of them were women. Their mean FTND score was 7.06 (2.0), and most of them (47.7%) had a very high level of addiction. After the smoking cessation treatment, their neutrophil, platelet, MPV, red cell distribution width, platelet distribution width (PDW), cholesterol, triglyceride, low- density lipoprotein, NLR, PLR, MPVLR, MHR and HDL values increased (p<0.05). The amount of smoking and level of dependence were negatively correlated with HDL, and positively correlated with other parameters. Conclusion After smoking cessation, in addition to dyslipidaemia, the NLR, PLR, MPVLR and MHR values also decreased, and the difference was found to correlate with the level of addiction and the amount of smoking.

Role of Platelet/Lymphocyte, Neutrophil/Lymphocyte, and Interleukin-37/Interleukin-17 Ratios in the Occurrence and Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis

ABSTRACT This study was designed to investigate the correlation of neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and interleukin (IL)-37/IL-17 ratio with the incidence/treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Firstly, fifty-eight patients with RA treated at the first affiliated hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from January 2018 to January 2019 were selected as the RA group; forty-nine healthy volunteers were enrolled in the control group. RA patients were treated with disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Next, the NLR, PLR, IL-37, IL-17 and 28-joint disease activity score using erythrocyte sedimentation rate (DAS28-ESR) were deleted in two groups. Subsequently, Spearman correlation analysis was adopted for the correlations of various indicators before and after treatment in two groups. According to the analysis results, the levels of NLR, PLR, IL-37, and IL-17 before treatment in the RA group were higher than those in the control group (P < .05), but the difference in the IL-37/IL-17 level between the two groups was not significant (P > .05). After treatment, NLR, PLR, and IL-37/IL-17 levels were significantly reduced in RA patients (P < .05). NLR and PLR were significantly positively correlated with DAS28-ESR, ESR and C-reactive protein (CRP), of which represented the disease activity of RA. NLP was strongly correlated with IL-37/IL-17. Collectively, NLR, PLR, IL-37, and IL-17 are closely related to the occurrence of RA. In addition, NLR and IL-37/IL-17 are more suitable than PLR in reflecting the therapeutic effect. Therefore, IL-37/IL-17 can be considered as a new indicator for reflecting the treatment effectiveness of RA.

Preoperative blood markers and intra-abdominal infection after colorectal cancer resection.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) has one of the highest morbidity and mortality rates among digestive tract tumors. Intra-abdominal infection (IAI) is a common postoperative complication that affects the clinical outcomes of patients with CRC and hinders their rehabilitation process. However, the factors influencing abdominal infection after CRC surgery remain unclear; further, prediction models are rarely used to analyze preoperative laboratory indicators and postoperative complications. To explore the predictive value of preoperative blood markers for IAI after radical resection of CRC. The data of 80 patients who underwent radical resection of CRC in the Anorectal Surgery Department of Suzhou Hospital affiliated with Anhui Medical University were analyzed. These patients were categorized into IAI (n = 15) and non-IAI groups (n = 65) based on whether IAI occurred. Influencing factors were compared; general data and laboratory indices of both groups were identified. The relationship between the indicators was assessed. Further, a nomogram prediction model was developed and evaluated; its utility and clinical applicability were assessed. The risk factors for IAI after radical resection of CRC were neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels. NLR was correlated with PLR and SII (r = 0.604, 0.925, and 0.305, respectively), while PLR was correlated with SII (r = 0.787). The nomogram prediction model demonstrated an area under the curve of 0.968 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.948-0.988] in the training set (n = 60) and 0.926 (95%CI: 0.906-0.980) in the validation set (n = 20). The average absolute errors of the calibration curves for the training and validation sets were 0.032 and 0.048, respectively, indicating a good model fit. The decision curve analysis curves demonstrated high net income above the 5% threshold, indicating the clinical practicality of the model. The nomogram model constructed using NLR, PLR, SII, and CEA levels had good accuracy and reliability in predicting IAI after radical resection of CRC, potentially aiding clinical treatment decision-making.

Association between alteration of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, platelet to lymphocyte ratio, cancer antigen-125 and surgical outcomes in advanced stage ovarian cancer patient who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy

IntroductionOptimal resection significantly influences the prognosis of advanced-stage epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) patients undergoing debulking surgery. In patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) followed by interval debulking surgery (IDS), the determination of the ideal timing for surgery remains a challenge. Inflammatory markers, including the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and CA-125 levels, have been recognized as potential predictive markers. ObjectiveThis study aims to evaluate the predictive value of changes in NLR, PLR, and CA-125 levels following NACT, specifically assessing their impact on surgical outcomes during IDS for advanced-stage EOC. MethodsA retrospective cohort study enrolled advanced-stage EOC patients who underwent NACT followed by IDS at Vajira Hospital in Thailand from January 2009 to June 2023. Data on clinical, surgical, and inflammatory markers were collected, and the predictive value of these markers for suboptimal resection outcomes was assessed. ResultsAmong the 65 patients, 98.5 % exhibited radiologic responses post-NACT, while 29.2 % experienced suboptimal resections. Univariate analysis did not reveal significant associations between suboptimal resection and NLR changes after the first NACT cycle or alterations in NLR, PLR, and CA-125 levels at the end of NACT. Subsequent analysis suggested that an NLR decrease exceeding 70 % after the first cycle and NACT completion might predict suboptimal resection, yet statistical analyses showed limited prognostic efficacy (AuROC = 0.608 and 0.597). ConclusionOur study does not support that changes in NLR, PLR, platelet count, and CA-125 levels after NACT reliably predict IDS outcomes. Additional prospective investigations using larger cohorts or a combination of evaluation methods, rather than relying solely on NLR, are recommended.

Analysis of NLR, PLR, and Carcinoembryonic Antigen in Colorectal Cancer Patients

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide. The development and prognosis of CRC are affected by the tumor's appearance and the host's inflammatory response. A combination of several parameters, including the Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) and Platelet-Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR), has been used as a cancer prognostic marker. Research needs to be performed to analyze its role in CRC. This study aimed to determine the differences in the NLR, PLR, and CEA values with the severity and site of CRC. Medical record data were collected from 246 CRC patients from January 2021 to June 2022 at Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital were used and grouped by severity (metastatic and non-metastatic) and site (left colon, right colon, rectum). This study collected the data on NLR, PLR, and CEA levels. The Mann-Whitney, Spearman Rho, and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for statistical analysis by the research objectives (significant if p&lt;0.05). There were differences in median PLR (194.47 vs. 201.18; p=0.045) and CEA (3.3 ng/mL vs. 11.95 ng/mL; p&lt;0.001) between the metastatic and non-metastatic groups, whereas there was no significant difference of median NLR between the two groups (2.77 vs. 2.79; p=0.438). No correlation was found between the NLR, PLR, and CEA level values with the location of CRC (p-values 0.978, 0.511, 0.419, respectively). PLR and CEA values were higher in metastatic CRC than in non-metastatic CRC, while NLR value was not significantly different. There was no correlation between the NLR, PLR, and CEA level values with the CRC site.

Effects of Music Therapy on Negative Emotions and Physiological Parameters in Patients Undergoing Colonoscopic Polypectomy: A Retrospective Study.

This study aimed to determine the postoperative effects of music therapy on negative emotions, pain, and inflammatory and physiological parameters in patients undergoing colonoscopic polypectomy. Patients who underwent colonoscopic polypectomy in Funan County People's Hospital between March 2020 and June 2023 were selected as the research subjects. Patients were divided into exposure (underwent music therapy) and control (did not undergo music therapy) groups. Baseline characteristics, Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores, physiological parameters [systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and heart rate (HR)], and inflammatory marker levels [neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)] of patients before and after exposure to music were determined. The propensity score matching (PSM) method (1:1) was used to balance the baseline characteristics of the two groups. After PSM, the exposure group comprised 50 cases and the control group comprised 50 cases. The baseline characteristics were not significantly different between the two groups (P > 0.05). The postoperative SAS score of the exposure group was significantly lower than that of the control group (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the postoperative VAS score of the exposure group was nonsignificantly lower than that of the control group (P > 0.05). Furthermore, the postoperative SBP, DBP, and HR levels of the exposure group were significantly lower than that of the control group (P < 0.05). The postoperative levels of NLR, PLR, and ESR were not significantly different between the exposure and control groups (P > 0.05). Music therapy exerts beneficial effects on the postoperative psychological and physiological parameters of patients undergoing colonoscopic polypectomy.

The relation of neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, platelet/lymphocyte ratio and mean platelet volume with idiopathic acute anterior uveitis

Objective In this study leukocyte, lymphocyte, neutrophil, platelet count, mean platelet volume (MPV), neutrophil/lymphocyte (NLR) ratio and platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were retrospectively evaluated in patients with idiopathic acute anterior uveitis. Materials and methods Medical records were retrospectively reviewed from March 2016 to February 2020. Fifty patients (25 men and 25 women) and as the control group, 50 healthy volunteers (25 males and 25 females) were included in this study. Blood samples of the patients were taken before starting treatment. A complete ophthalmological examination, including corrected visual acuity, tonometry, slit lamp and fundus examination, was performed in all patients. Gender, age, leukocyte, neutrophil, lymphocyte, platelet, MPV, PLR, and NLR values of the patients were recorded. Results In this study, a statistically significant difference was found in leukocyte ( p &lt; .001), neutrophil ( p &lt; .001), platelet ( p &lt; .001), NLR ( p &lt; .001) and PLR ( p &lt; .001) values. No significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of lymphocyte count ( p = .063) and in the MPV value ( p = .051). Leukocyte, neutrophil, platelet count, NLR, and PLR values were higher in the uveitis group compared to the control group. In the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, the area under the curve (AUC) for NLR was 0.805, with a sensitivity of 56.0% and a specificity of 98.0%. The AUC for PLR was 0.657, with a sensitivity of 52.0% and a specificity of 98.0%. Conclusion In this retrospective study, leukocyte, neutrophil, platelet count, PLR, and NLR levels were significantly higher in patients with idiopathic acute anterior uveitis compared to the control group. These blood parameters are useful as diagnostic markers and can be used in early diagnosis.

The expression of peripheral blood inflammatory factors in patients with acute ischemic stroke and its correlation with patients' prognosis.

This study aimed to determine the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and their correlation with the patients' prognosis. For this purpose, a total of 100 patients with AIS admitted to the neurology department of our hospital between March 2019 and February 2022 were selected as the AIS group, and all patients were treated with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) intravenous thrombolysis. According to the Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores three months after thrombolysis, patients in the AIS group were grouped into a favourable group (mRS score: 0-2 points) and an unfavourable group (mRS score: 3-6 points). Additionally, 100 healthy individuals who received physical examination over the same time span were enrolled into a health group. The NLR and PLR of each group were compared, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were drawn to analyze the predictive value of separate tests of NLR and PLR and joint tests of them for unfavourable prognosis of AIS patients who received thrombolytic therapy. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to understand the influencing factors of unfavourable prognosis of the AIS patients who received thrombolytic therapy. The results indicated that the AIS group exhibited significantly higher NLR and PLR levels compared to the health group. The unfavourable group showed notably higher NLR and PLR than the favourable group. Lymphocytes, NLR and PLR were independent risk factors for predicting the prognosis of AIS patients who received thrombolytic therapy. Additionally, NLR and PLR had high diagnostic efficiency in predicting patients' adverse prognoses, and the diagnostic efficiency of their combination is higher than that of single detection. In conclusion, NLR and PLR have certain predictive values for the prognosis of AIS patients who received thrombolytic therapy, and they can serve as indicators for disease monitoring and prognosis evaluation of AIS patients.

The diagnostic value of systemic inflammatory response markers as predictors of epithelial ovarian cancer

Background: Early detection of ovarian neoplasms confers a better outcome and prognosis for patients. Although newer diagnostic modalities have been recently developed, the availability and accessibility of complete blood count parameters make it a convenient and cost-effective marker for malignancy. Objectives were to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of pretreatment neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in patients with late-stage epithelial ovarian malignancy at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. Methods: A prospective analysis of fifty-seven women with histologic diagnosis of epithelial ovarian cancer who were managed at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2022, was conducted. A data collection form was used to obtain socio-demographic and clinico-pathological characteristics from the patients after informed consent was obtained. Pretreatment levels of NLR and PLR were determined from complete blood count. The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to assess the predictive accuracy of the haematological parameters for late-stage epithelial ovarian cancer. Results: Higher values of NLR and PLR were significantly associated with the stage of ovarian cancer (p=0.001). The optimal cut-off points based on ROC curve analyses for NLR and PLR were found to be 2.6 (AUC=0.61, p&gt;0.05), and 155.8 (AUC=0.62, p&gt;0.05) respectively. However, none of the haematological parameters could be used as predictive markers for advanced-stage ovarian cancer in this study. Conclusions: Pretreatment NLR and PLR cannot be used as a stand-alone predictor of advanced ovarian cancer, and should be correlated with other clinical, laboratory and radiologic parameters.

Exploring systemic inflammation in children with chronic kidney disease: correlates of interleukin 6.

Systemic inflammation (SI) is linked to chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression and multiple complications. Data regarding SI biomarkers in pediatric patients are scarce. This case-control and cross-sectional study investigates the correlation of neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and serum albumin to serum interleukin-6 (IL-6). NLR and PLR were measured in 53 patients (median age: 12.9years), including 17 on dialysis and 36 with a median glomerular filtration rate of 39ml/min/1.73m2, and in 25 age and sex-matched healthy controls. Iron profile, serum albumin and IL-6 were measured in the patient group. IL-6 levels > 3rd quartile were classified as high. Patients presented higher NLR and PLR and particularly those on dialysis (p < 0.001 and p = 0.001). We observed a significant correlation between natural logarithm (ln) of IL-6 (lnIL-6) and NLR (rs = 0.344, p = 0.014), serum albumin (rs = -0.350, p = 0.011) and TIBC (rs = -0.345, p = 0.012) after adjustment for CKD stage, while the correlation between lnIL-6 and PLR was not significant (rs = 0.206, p = 0.151). Combination of NLR, serum albumin and TIBC predicted high IL-6 (13 patients) with an AUC of 0.771 (95% CI 0.608-0.943). Pairing of NLR ≥ 1.7 and TIBC ≤ 300μg/dL exhibited the highest sensitivity (76.9%), while incorporating serum albumin ≤ 3.8g/dL along with them achieved the highest specificity (95%) for detecting high IL-6 levels. Both NLR and PLR levels increase in CKD, especially in patients on chronic dialysis. NLR, rather than PLR, along with TIBC and serum albumin, are associated with IL-6 in pediatric CKD.

Prognostic value of diffuse cancer inflammation index (ALI), serum neutrophil/lymphocyte (NLR) and platelet/lymphocyte (PLR) in advanced-stage lung cancer

ABSTRACT Introduction: Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer that causes death worldwide. Systemic inflammation has been shown to play a role in cancer etiopathogenesis and can be activated from oncogenic changes in cancer cells. In our study, the prognostic effects of inflammatory parameters calculated from serum were investigated in lung cancer. Method: One hundred fifteen patients with locally advanced and advanced lung cancer who were diagnosed in our chest diseases clinic between 2013 and 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. The relationship between advanced lung cancer inflammation index (ALI index), serum neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) levels at the time of diagnosis were calculated, and their relationship with overall survival (OS), disease-free survival, and the treatment response and their effect on predicting prognosis were investigated. Findings: When the ALI value was examined in the group with non-small cell lung, the OS was found to be 9.018 months in the group over 18 years of age and it was 3.78 months in the group below. Low ALI index was significantly associated with short survival (P &lt;.05). When the NLR values were examined in the entire patient group, OS more than 5 was 5.95 months and less than 9.63 months. A high NLR value was significantly associated with short survival (P &lt;.05). No significant relationships were detected between PLR and OS. When the determined cut-off values were used, no significant correlation was found between NLR, ALI, and PLR levels and progression-free survival (P &gt;.05). Conclusion: In our study, it was concluded that elevated NLR levels and low ALI values at the time of diagnosis of advanced-stage lung cancer were associated with poor survival, and those values may be useful in predicting survival and prognosis when the cut-off values were used. These parameters can be useful in routine use because they can be easily calculated without additional costs.

Predictive value of immunotherapy-induced inflammation indexes: dynamic changes in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors

BackgroundImmune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have achieved substantial advancements in clinical care. However, there is no strong evidence for identified biomarkers of ICIs in NPC.MethodsIn this retrospective study, 284 patients were enrolled into a training or validation cohort. Inflammatory indexes based on peripheral blood parameters were evaluated, including the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), the lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio (LCR), and the lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR). The optimum cut-off value for patient stratification was identified using X-tile. The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox’s proportional regression analyses were used to identify prognostic factors.ResultsImmunotherapy significantly changed the levels of SII, NLR, PLR, LCR and LMR in NPC patients. Patients with lower SII, NLR, and PLR, as well as those with higher LCR and LMR, before immunotherapy had superior PFS (all p < 0.05). Moreover, PFS in the decreased SII, reduced NLR and increased LMR group was significantly longer than in the opposite group (all p < 0.05). Both univariate and multivariate analyses validated that baseline SII and LMR, and the immunotherapy-related SII reduction and LMR elevation were independent prognostic factors for PFS in advanced NPC patients receiving ICIs.ConclusionsImmune checkpoint inhibitor treatments significantly changed the levels of SII, NLR, PLR, LCR and LMR in NPC patients treated with immunotherapy. A lower baseline SII and a higher baseline LMR, and a reduction in SII and an elevation in LMR after immunotherapy are favorable factors for predicting survival among advanced NPC patients.

Predictive Value of Complete Blood Count and Inflammation Marker on Risk of Recurrence in Children with Henoch-Schönlein Purpura

To investigate the predictive value of complete blood count (CBC) and inflammation marker on the recurrence risk in children with Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP). One hundred and thirty-three children with HSP admitted to Cangzhou Central Hospital from February 2017 to March 2019 were enrolled. The clinical data of the children were collected, at the time of admission CBC and C-reactive protein (CRP) were detected. After discharge, the children were followed up for 1 year, the clinical data of children with and without recurrence were compared, and multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the risk factors affecting HSP recurrence. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve should be drawn and the predictive value of CBC and CRP on HSP recurrence should be analyzed. In the follow-up of 133 children, 8 cases were lost and 39 cases recurred, with a recurrence rate of 31.20% (39/125). The age, skin rash duration, proportion of renal damage at the initial onset, percentage of neutrophils, percentage of lymphocytes, platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV) and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), MPV/PLT ratio (MPR), and CRP level of patients with recurrence were statistically different from those without recurrence (P <0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that long skin rash duration, renal damage at the initial onset, increased PLR, high PLT, increased MPV and elevated CRP level were independent risk factors for recurrence in children with HSP (P <0.05). The ROC curve analysis showed that the area under the curve (AUC) of the combination of the four blood and inflammation marker (PLT, MPV, PLR and CPR) in the early prediction of HSP recurrence was 0.898, which was higher than the initial renal damage (AUC=0.687) and persistent skin rash time (AUC=0.708), with a sensitivity of 84.62% and a specificity of 83.72%. Observation of CBC and CPR can predict the risk of HSP recurrence early and guide early clinical intervention.

The association between symptomatic carotid stenosis and hematological parameters

Background &amp; Objectives: Symptomatic carotid artery stenosis (SCAS) is one of the most important causes of ischemic stroke. We aimed to investigate the relationship between hematological and inflammatory parameters in patients with SCAS and controls. Method: Patients who underwent digital subtraction angiography for SCAS were evaluated retrospectively. Patients with carotid stenosis greater than 50% who had a stroke in the last six months were included in the study. Clinical and sociodemographic characteristics, stent characteristics, filter use, balloon dilatation status, arch type, presence of contralateral occlusion, and complication status were recorded. Hemogram was evaluated using fluorescence flow cytometry. Data were analyzed among patients with SCAS, ischemic stroke patients without stenosis and healthy control group. Results: SCAS was higher in patients with advanced age, male, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, and a history of stroke as compared to healthy individuals (p&lt;0.001). Smoking and atrial fibrillation were higher in group without carotid stenosis and who had ischemic stroke (p&lt;0.001). Hemoglobin and hematocrit values were higher in healthy control group (p=0.001). Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were higher in SCAS patients (p&lt;0.001); Neutrophil and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was higher in the group with stroke and without stenosis (p &lt;0.001). There was no relationship between blood parameters and procedure technical features and complications (p&gt; 0.05). Conclusion: Hematologic parameters like PLR, NLR and RDW level are correlated with SCAS. PLR, NLR and RDW value can be an inexpensive and useful biomarker for predicting SCAS.

Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio, Monocyte-Lymphocyte Ratio and Platelet-Lymphocyte Ratio in Manic Episode Patients with Bipolar Disorder

Objective: Inflammation is one of several etiopathological mechanisms contributing to bipolar disorder. Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are relatively cheap hematological parameters recommended to measure the level of inflammation. In this study, the NLR, MLR, and PLR values of the same patients during manic and euthymic periods were compared to a healthy control group. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on inpatients with bipolar disorder manic episodes at the University Faculty of Medicine psychiatry clinic. Ninety-nine patients with manic episodes of bipolar disorder and age and gender-matched 101 volunteers without prior psychiatric illness were included in the study. Neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, and platelet counts during the disease period were recorded, and NLR, MLR, and PLR values were calculated from these values. Similar hematological parameters of the same patients in the euthymic period after discharge were compared. Results: Patients with manic episodes were shown to have significantly higher neutrophil, platelet, NLR, MLR, and PLR levels than the control group (p&lt;0.001). Monocyte count was significantly lower in manic episode patients compared to controls (p&lt;0.001). Neutrophil and monocyte counts were significantly lower during the euthymic period compared to the control group, while NLR, MLR, and PLR levels were higher (p&lt;0.001). Conclusions: The fact that NLR, MLR, and PLR are higher in BD patients compared to the healthy control group in both manic and euthymic periods indicates that they can be used as trait biomarkers.

Evaluation of the uric acid and hematological parameters in patients with nodal hand osteoarthritis

Objectives: To compare patients with symptomatic nodal hand osteoarthritis (OA) with a control group in respect of inflammation parameters, uric acid, and hematological parameters. Methods: The study included 50 post-menopausal female patients, aged 40-80 years, diagnosed with symptomatic nodal hand OA, and a control group of 50 post-menopausal females in the same age range with no hand OA. Patient data including age, monocyte, neutrophil, lymphocyte, and thrombocyte counts, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP) level, uric acid level, and the Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) score obtained from evaluations of hand radiographs, were recorded retrospectively from the hospital information system. The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) were calculated. The data were compared between the two groups. Results: The data of 100 females were compared, comprising a patient group of 50 patients with symptomatic nodal OA, and a control group of 50 females. Age, monocyte, neutrophil, lymphocyte, and thrombocyte counts, NLR, PLR, MLR, ESR, CRP, and uric acid level were compared. With the exception of MLR and ESR, no statistically significant difference was determined between the two groups. The MLR was determined to be statistically significantly higher in the control group than in the patient group (p = 0.024). The ESR was determined to be statistically significantly higher in the patient group than in the control group p &amp;lt; 0.001). When patients with a KL score of 2 and 3 were compared, with the exception of age, no other difference was determined. Patients with a KL score of 3 were seen to be significantly older (p = 0.032). Conclusions: ESR was determined to be significantly higher in patients with symptomatic nodal OA. Clarification of the relationship between inflammation, uric acid, and hand OA, which is a heterogeneous disease, will be useful in the follow-up and treatment of patients.

Monocyte eosinophil ratio and red blood cell distribution width in the diagnosis of asthma

Objective: Bronchial asthma is often associated with chronic airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness in which many cells and mediators are involved. Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are used in the diagnosis of the disease. Yet PFTs are not available in every healthcare institution or some of the patients cannot cooperate with the procedure. The aim of this study was to determine whether mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), monocyte lymphocyte ratio (MLR), monocyte eosinophil ratio (MER), and platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR) can be used in the diagnosis of bronchial asthma.&#x0D; &#x0D; Method: Two hundred and twelve patients who were diagnosed with bronchial asthma according to the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) criteria and 187 patients who were deemed not to have asthma were included in the study.
