Climate and soil factors co-derive the functional traits variations in naturalized downy thorn apple (Datura innoxia Mill.) along the altitudinal gradient in the semi-arid environment

Plant functional traits are consistently linked with certain ecological factors (i.e., abiotic and biotic), determining which components of a plant species pool are assembled into local communities. In this sense, non-native naturalized plants show more plasticity of morphological traits by adopting new habitat (an ecological niche) of the invaded habitats. This study focuses on the biomass allocation pattern and consistent traits-environment linkages of a naturalized Datura innoxia plant population along the elevation gradient in NW, Pakistan. We sampled 120 plots of the downy thorn apple distributed in 12 vegetation stands with 18 morphological and functional biomass traits during the flowering season and were analyzed along the three elevation zones having altitude ranges from 634.85 m to 1405.3 m from sear level designated as Group I to III identified by Ward's agglomerative clustering strategy (WACS). Our results show that many morphological traits and biomass allocation in different parts varied significantly (p < 0.05) in the pair-wise comparisons along the elevation. Likewise, all plant traits decreased from lower (drought stress) to high elevation zones (moist zones), suggesting progressive adaptation of Datura innoxia with the natural vegetation in NW Pakistan. Similarly, the soil variable also corresponds with the trait's variation e.g., significant variations (P < 0.05) of soil organic matter, organic carbon, Nitrogen and Phosphorus was recorded. The trait-environment linkages were exposed by redundancy analysis (RDA) that was co-drive by topographic (elevation, r = −0.4897), edaphic (sand, r = -0.4565 and silt, r = 0.5855) and climatic factors. Nevertheless, the influences of climatic factors were stronger than soil variables that were strongly linked with elevation gradient. The study concludes that D. innoxia has adopted the prevailing environmental and climatic conditions, and further investigation is required to evaluate the effects of these factors on their phytochemical and medicinal value.

Delimiting species using DNA and morphological variation in some Alcea (Malvaceae) species based on SRAP markers

Species identification is fundamentally important within the fields of biology, biogeography, ecology and conservation. The genus Alcea (Malvaceae) includes approximately 70 species of mainly Irano-Turanian distribution and is considered one of the most challenging genera of the Middle East, due to its uniformity and pronounced plasticity in morphological traits. In spite vast distribution of many Alcea species that grow in Iraq, there are not any available report on their genetic diversity, mode of divergence and patterns of dispersal. Therefore, we performed molecular (SRAP marker) and morphological studies of 80 accessions from 10 species of Alcea that were collected from different habitats in Iraq. The aims of present study are: 1) can SRAP markers identify Alcea species, 2) what is the genetic structure of these taxa in Iraq, and 3) to investigate the species inter-relationship? The present study revealed that combination of morphological and SRAP data can identify the species.

Traits plasticity of Sodom Apple (Calotropis procera) along the environmental gradient in the semi-arid environment.

Biomass and morphological characteristics of plant species provide essential insight into how well a species adapts to its environment. The study aims to evaluate how environmental variables (viz., altitude, slope, aspect degree, and soil properties) influence the morphological traits and biomass variability of Calotropis procera (Aiton) W.T. Aiton in a semi-arid environment. C. procera sample locations were divided into 39 permanent sites (5×5 = 25 m2). Slope, aspect degree, slope aspect, altitude, and soil variables (soil moisture, organic matter, nitrogen (N %), and phosphorus (P) gradients were used to quantify morphological parameters (height, diameters, canopy area, volume, and leave/branch biomass) and aboveground biomass. Environmental variables, i.e., altitude and aspect degree, were the most important factor influencing the biomass variation and affecting soil moisture content; however, they did not directly affect the total biomass of the species. The results also reveal significant plasticity in morphological traits exists concerning elevation and aspect degree at (p< 0.05). Plant volume was a better indicator of species' total biomass revealed from the regression model showing significant at p< 0.05. The study also reveals that soil properties such as soil moisture and Phosphorus have an important role in enhancing the productivity of the studied plant species. The results concluded that plants functional traits and biomass shows significant variation across the altitude and these parameters could be consider in the conservation of this native species.

Phenotypic Plasticity in Morphological Traits of Abelmoschus esculentus L. Induced by Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor, Trichostatin A

Epigenetic changes such as DNA methylation and histone modifications, when meiotically inherited across generations, can act as a stable evolutionary force that is independent of any accompanying DNA mutations. Certain histone deacetylase (HDAC)-inhibiting chemicals such as Trichostatin A (TSA) and sodium butyrate are known to regulate the total acetylated histones in the genome, which is important for regulating the expression of various traits in all organisms. This study investigated all morphological variations in traits of Abelmoschus esculentus L. (okra) induced by different doses of Trichostatin A in a popular okra variety, Arka Abhay. Two sets of seeds were treated with two doses (0.4 µM and 1.2 µM) of TSA and were incubated in the chemical for three and five days, respectively, to record the effects of dose and incubation periods on various agronomic characters of okra. The treatment of TSA had a negative impact on the majority of the characters under evaluation. Total seedlings emerged, and mean shoot and root length were retarded following the TSA treatment. Extremely dwarfed plants with malformed leaves and flowers were a common observation. Pollen sterility combined with distortion of the reproductive whorls of the flowers were particularly pronounced at high doses with a prolonged incubation period. Treated plants had a significantly delayed first flowering and produced short fruits with altered morphology. Variations in seeds with respect to the number, colour and size were also recorded. Total reduction with respect to seedling parameters, total pollen production, the number of fertile pollens, plant height and other damaging effects on leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds increased as the dose and incubation period increased. Statistical analysis revealed the significant negative effect of TSA treatments on plant height, the number of ridges and locules per fruit, number of seeds per fruit and test weight. The treatment, 1.2 µM Trichostatin A incubated for three days, showed a remarkable difference as traits such as total field emergence, seedling parameters and days to first flowering plant height, number of seeds per fruit and test weight deviated from the expected trend of decreasing growth parameters as the dose and incubation period increased. The study further revealed that the treatment (1.2 µM TSA incubated for three days) can be suggested for use in okra to induce epigenetic variations without significantly compromising the growth and vigour parameters of okra.

Population structure, regeneration potential and leaf morphological traits of Rhododendron campanulatum D.Don along an altitudinal gradient in Western Himalaya

The vegetation of the alpine treeline ecotone is among the most vulnerable and sensitive to global climate change. Treeline species respond to global warming through changes in their population structure, regeneration, plant functional traits and shift in their habitat. This study was carried out on Rhododendron campanulatum D.Don, a typical plant species of the Himalayan treeline ecotone, to understand the variation in population structure, regeneration potential and leaf morphological traits along the altitudinal gradient (3100–3550 m.a.s.l.) in Tungnath, Western Himalaya. We reported the higher seedling (3480 stem ha−1) and juvenile (2210 stem ha−1) density of the species above the treeline at 3400 m.a.s.l. This clearly shows a good regeneration status and indicates the upward shift of the species. Leaf morphological traits such as length, width, and the specific leaf area decreased with an increase in elevation but leaf thickness increased with an increase in elevation. SLA was higher (71.14 cm2/g; p < 0.001) at 3100 m.a.s.l. located below the treeline than 3550 m.a.s.l. (60.08 cm2/g; p < 0.001)) located above the treeline. The results indicate that the species has large flexibility in the morphological performance and its high level of plasticity in morphological traits may explain its wider niche and ability to survive in harsh alpine conditions.

Shaping coral traits: plasticity more than filtering

The structure of an ecosystem is usually determined by the shape of the organisms that build it, commonly known as ecosystem engineers. Understanding to what extent plasticity and environmental filtering determine variation in the physical structure of ecosystem engineers is necessary to predict how ecosystem structure may change. Here, we explored coral survival and the plasticity of morphological traits that are critical for habitat provision in coral reefs. We conducted a reciprocal clonal transplant experiment in which branching corals from the genera Porites and Acropora were moved to and from a deep and a shallow site within a lagoon in the Maldives. Survival and trait analyses revealed that transplant destination consistently induced the strongest changes, particularly among Acropora spp. The origin of the corals had only marginal effects on some of the traits. We also detected variation in the way individuals from the same species and site differentiate in their shape, showing that traits linked to habitat provision are phenotypically plastic. The results suggest that in the quite common lagoonal conditions studied here, coral phenotypic plasticity plays a stronger role than environmental filtering, in determining the zonation of coral morphologies, and consequently the habitats they provide for other organisms.

Morphological Diversity and Genetic Relationships in Pulque Production Agaves in Tlaxcala, Mexico, by Means of Unsupervised Learning and Gene Sequencing Analysis.

Pulque is one of the oldest fermented beverages, with its origins dating back to pre-Hispanic Mexico. Recently, public consumption has increased. However, the majority of Agave plantations for pulque production have disappeared or been abandoned in recent decades. To create strategies for the conservation and production of pulque agaves, it is necessary to first determine their taxonomic identities and to better understand their genetic and morphological diversity. Despite the historical importance of pulque in Mexico, little attention has been placed on the study of Agave plants used for its production. Therefore, we analyzed the morphological diversity of vegetative characters of nine landraces of two Agave species (A. salmiana and A. mapisaga) which are widely cultivated for pulque production in Tlaxcala, Mexico. The analysis of morphological characters showed that the landraces largely clustered based on classic taxonomic relationships. One cluster of landraces associated with Agave mapisaga var. mapisaga and another with A. salmiana subsp. salmiana, but with the exception of A. salmiana subsp. salmiana “Ayoteco”, which is more closely related with A. mapisaga var. mapisaga. Additionally, we analyzed the genetic relationships between 14 landraces and wild individuals using molecular markers (trnL and ITS). The identified genetic variants or haplotypes and genetic pools mainly corresponded with the species. In the case of “Ayoteco”, incongruence between markers was observed. Low selection intensity, genetic flow events, and the plasticity of morphological traits may explain the high number of landraces without clear differences in their morphological diversity (vegetative characters) or genetic pools. The use of reproductive traits and massive sequencing might be useful for identifying possible morphological and genetic changes in the Agave landraces used for pulque production.

Functional plasticity in lamellar autotomy by larval damselflies in response to predatory larval dragonfly cues

Adaptive autotomy is the self-amputation of an appendage in response to external stimuli that benefits survival. Variation in the ease of appendage removal among populations suggests that autotomy performance is under selection, evolves, or is phenotypically plastic, although the latter has never been experimentally tested. We model an autotomy threshold that optimally balances how the benefits of surviving predator attack versus the costs of losing an appendage vary with predator presence. We test for functional plasticity in autotomy threshold in the caudal lamellae of Enallagma damselfly larvae by experimentally manipulating non-lethal cues from predatory dragonfly larvae. Predator cues lead to functional plastic responses in the form of smaller lamellar joints that required lower peak breaking force. This is the first experimental demonstration of functional plasticity in autotomy to cues from a grasping predator, a novel form of indirect predator effects on prey, realized through plasticity in morphological traits that govern the autotomy threshold. This supports the model of optimized autotomy performance and provides a novel explanation for variation in performance among populations under different predator conditions. Plastic autotomy responses that mitigate costs in the face of variation in mortality risks might be a form of inducible defense.

Plasticity of morphological traits in response to social conditions in a simultaneous hermaphrodite

According to sex allocation theory, hermaphrodites allocate a fixed amount of resources to their male and female functions, and the proportion of resources invested in each sex depends on the mating group size. Measures of trade-offs between male and female functions are usually made directly by estimating the number of gametes or the size of the gonads. In this study, we focused on the effect of social conditions (i.e. mating opportunities) on the expression of some morphological traits and on their plasticity in the protandrous simultaneously hermaphrodite Ophryotrocha diadema. We investigated whether in O. diadema the morphological traits, which are dimorphic in Ophryotrocha dioecious species – upper-jaw size, prostomium size, body size and number of rosette glands − are plastic when they respond to variations in social conditions and whether variations in these traits are associated with variations in male and/or female reproductive success. Plasticity of the traits was analysed during both the juvenile and the adult phases in order to check whether phenotypic plasticity is limited to the developmental phase or can be manifested throughout the whole lifespan of the animals. Our results showed that the number of rosette glands, the upper-jaw size and the prostomium size are traits that are plastic in O. diadema. Indeed, the number and size of these traits changed according to the variation of social conditions. However, we found no association between the plastic morphological traits and male or female reproductive success.

Phylogenetic relationships in the species–rich Irano–Turanian genus Alcea (Malvaceae)

AbstractThe genus Alcea (Malvaceae) includes approximately 50 species of mainly Irano–Turanian distribution and is considered one of the most challenging genera of the Middle East, due to its uniformity and pronounced plasticity in morphological traits. Here, using three molecular markers (nrDNA ITS and the plastid spacers psbA–trnH and trnL–trnF), we present a phylogeny of Alcea and test previous infrageneric taxonomic hypotheses as well as its monophyly with respect to Althaea, a genus with which it has often been merged. We additionally discuss morphological variation and the utility of morphological characters as predictors of phylogenetic relationships. Our results show that while molecular data unambiguously support the circumscription of Alcea inferred from morphology, they prove to be of limited utility in resolving interspecific relationships, suggesting that Alcea,s high species diversity is due to rapid and recent radiation. Our work provides the first phylogeny of Alcea and aims to set the scene for the study of processes underlying species radiation in the Irano–Turanian region, a main centre of species diversity for many medium–sized to large genera that remains greatly understudied.

Plasticity to neighbour shade: fitness consequences and allometry

SummaryPhenotypic plasticity may confer a fitness benefit to organisms in a spatially heterogeneous environment. However, the evolution of such adaptive plasticity can be limited by the constraints imposed by interacting environments. Moreover, adaptive plasticity may be masked by reduced growth in a low‐quality environment. The allometry between plasticity of morphological traits and overall growth is often overlooked.We addressed these issues by examining the effect of shade produced by neighbouring plants (neighbour shade) on a small annual plant,Geranium carolinianum. Plants were grown in two field sites, a wood margin and an old field. A clipping treatment was used to manipulate neighbour shade at both planting sites. We measured petiole length to quantify shade avoidance response. Genotypic selection analysis was used to assess the fitness consequences of petiole length.Petioles were longer in the wood margin than in the old field and were similar between neighbour environments. However, overall plant size differed among the environments. As a result, relative to plant size, petioles were longer when individuals were surrounded by neighbours than when neighbours had been removed, but were similar between sites. After taking the size into account, plants with longer petioles had higher fitness than plants with shorter petioles in all environments.The functional response of petioles to neighbour shade was revealed only when the passive plasticity of plant size was considered. The lack of differential selection across neighbour environments together with active elongation of petioles in response to neighbours suggests that the current shade avoidance response is adaptive.

Phenotypic plasticity in morphological traits in two populations of Drosophila melanogaster

AbstractIsofemale lines of two populations of Drosophila melanogaster, originating from France and Tanzania, were examined over a range of temperatures. Morphological traits showed distinct patterns in phenotypic plasticity; flies of the two populations differed in shape.Genotype‐by‐Environment (G*E) interactions were frequently found in the Tanzania population, but were hardly present in the France population. If G*E interaction was present over temperature, estimates of additive genetic variance and additive genetic covariance were made to compare theoretical models with our data. The conclusion is that in France Drosophila melanogaster has been selected over a wider range of temperatures, resulting in parallel reaction norms of more optimal slope. In contrast, selection must have taken place over a narrower temperature range in Tanzanian flies, and will have exerted no direct influence on the slope of the reaction norm.
