VERMEER FCM: A tool integrating exposure and hazard modelling for chemicals migrating from food contact materials

A new tool, VERMEER FCM, was developed to support the risk assessment of single organic chemicals migrating from plastic food contact materials (FCM). The freely available tool is integrated into MERLIN-Expo and has been designed in line with Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 for plastic FCM. Overall, the tool consists of three modules that allow (i) to model the migration of chemicals into food, (ii) to predict toxicological endpoints relevant to risk assessment of FCM chemicals, and (iii) to automatically check whether the chemical of interest is included in Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. To apply the VERMEER FCM tool, users need to provide information regarding the chemical(s) of interest, the FCM, the food and other parameters (e.g. contact time and temperature). The three modules can be run either separately or in combination. Migration is predicted by a recently developed migration model, whereas hazard predictions for genotoxicity, subchronic toxicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity and carcinogenicity are provided by QSAR models selected from the publicly available VEGA HUB. The major novelty of the tool is that it combines information on hazard and exposure (i.e. migration) with regulatory information. Several case studies were performed to demonstrate the application of the tool.

Development of a solid food simulant to evaluate migration of chemicals from paper and board food contact materials to moist food

Food contact materials (FCMs) i.e. materials that food is packaged or handled in, must be safe for their intended use. European FCM legislation uses a risk-based approach, with a cornerstone of FCM’s safety evaluation being measurement of migration of substances from FCMs to food simulants. The standard methods mainly developed for plastic FCMs are not always suitable for less inert and moisture sensitive materials such as paper and board. However, these are becoming increasingly common as FCMs e.g. to replace single-use plastics. In addition, there is a drive to further use recycled materials. To support this development, new methods for assessing the safety of these materials are needed. In the present feasibility study, a hydrogel crosslinked through freeze-thawing of poly(vinyl alcohol) was evaluated as a food simulant for moist foods. The migration of surrogate compounds from a spiked paperboard to the hydrogel was determined and compared to the migration to a real moist food (a slice of apple), the commonly used modified polyphenylene oxide (MPPO) and a water extract. Migration of polar surrogates to the hydrogel correlated well with the migration to the apple slice. However, our results indicate that the hydrogel is less suitable as simulant for non-polar surrogates. Overall, the study demonstrates the potential of this hydrogel-based simulant for improving risk assessment of less inert FCMs.

Plant-based food contact materials: presence of hazardous substances

As a result of the European Single Use Plastic Directive and as part of the transition to a circular economy, plastic food contact materials (FCMs) are being replaced, often by renewable plant-based materials. This research aimed to identify which chemical substances are present in plant-based materials. In 2022 a total of 28 samples of the latter materials from the Dutch market were analysed for 313 active substances from plant protection products, 47 per- and polyfluoralkyl substances (PFASs) and 27 heavy metals and other elements. Ten samples contained plant protection products that are not authorised in the EU. Most materials contained PFASs at trace or even high levels. Three out of four investigated sugar cane materials contained 6:2 fluorotelomer alcohol at levels up to 1.7 mg/kg. High contents of aluminium, manganese, iron, zinc, and barium were found. Other heavy metals, such as arsenic, lead and mercury were found in relatively low contents. A broad GC-MS screening was performed, which revealed the presence of plant extractable, plasticisers, antioxidants and hydrocarbons, which were not all authorised for FCMs, but may be present as non-intentionally added substances.

Microplastic and PTFE contamination of food from cookware

Microplastics are a prolific environmental contaminant that have been evidenced in human tissues. Human uptake of microplastic occurs via inhalation of airborne fibres and ingestion of microplastic-contaminated foods and beverages. Plastic and PTFE-coated cookware and food contact materials may release micro- and nanoplastics into food during food preparation. In this study, the extent to which non-plastic, new plastic and old plastic cookware releases microplastics into prepared food is investigated. Jelly is used as a food simulant, undergoing a series of processing steps including heating, cooling, mixing, slicing and storage to replicate food preparation steps undertaken in home kitchens. Using non-plastic cookware did not introduce microplastics to the food simulant. Conversely, using new and old plastic cookware resulted in significant increases in microplastic contamination. Microplastics comprised PTFE, polyethylene and polypropylene particulates and fibrous particles, ranging 13–318 μm. Assuming a meal was prepared daily per the prescribed methodology, new and old plastic cookware may be contributing 2409–4964 microplastics per annum into homecooked food. The health implications of ingesting microplastics remains unclear.

Risk assessment of food contact materials.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is authorised for use as a chemical compound for the production of plastic food contact materials (FCMs) under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. But according to requirements of the Regulation (EU) No 2018/213, BPA has been banned in the manufacture of polycarbonate drinking cups or feeding bottles intended for infants and young children. Food has been identified as the main source of human exposure to BPA, followed by dermal absorption, air and dust inhalation, revealing ubiquitous and continuous contact with BPA. Considering that BPA is able to enter the food chain through the migration from food packaging into foodstuffs, assessment of dietary exposure is necessary for accurate estimations and identification of potential exposure from food sources. In 2015, EFSA set a temporary tolerable daily intake (TDI) for BPA of 4 μg/kg body weight (bw) per day and concluded that no health concern from BPA exposure for any age group was to be expected. In 2023, EFSA has re-evaluated BPA safety and the new TDI was reduced by a factor of 20,000 resulting in a TDI of 0.2 ng/kg bw per day. In this case, the CEP Panel concluded that there is a health concern from dietary exposure to BPA. Amongst others, the BfR identified several points of criticism which, in the opinion of the BfR, call into question the risk assessment carried out by EFSA. The BfR derived a TDI of 200 ng/kg bw per day and suggests taking this into account for risk assessment. In the proposed EU-FORA programme, the fellow had the opportunity to gain experience in the exposure assessment and then integrate the data together with the BfR hazard assessment to perform a comprehensive risk assessment. As second objective of the work programme, the fellow was in charge of performing a toxicokinetic analysis in an attempt to correlate external exposure with urinary BPA levels.

The Mechanisms of Plastic Food-Packaging Monomers' Migration into Food Matrix and the Implications on Human Health.

The development of packaging technology has become a crucial part of the food industry in today's modern societies, which are characterized by technological advancements, industrialization, densely populated cities, and scientific advancements that have increased food production over the past 50 years despite the lack of agricultural land. Various types of food-packaging materials are utilized, with plastic being the most versatile. However, there are certain concerns with regards to the usage of plastic packaging because of unreacted monomers' potential migration from the polymer packaging to the food. The magnitude of monomer migration depends on numerous aspects, including the monomer chemistry, type of plastic packaging, physical-chemical parameters such as the temperature and pH, and food chemistry. The major concern for the presence of packaging monomers in food is that some monomers are endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) with a capability to interfere with the functioning of vital hormonal systems in the human body. For this reason, different countries have resolved to enforce guidelines and regulations for packaging monomers in food. Additionally, many countries have introduced migration testing procedures and safe limits for packaging monomer migration into food. However, to date, several research studies have reported levels of monomer migration above the set migration limits due to leaching from the food-packaging materials into the food. This raises concerns regarding possible health effects on consumers. This paper provides a critical review on plastic food-contact materials' monomer migration, including that from biodegradable plastic packaging, the monomer migration mechanisms, the monomer migration chemistry, the key factors that affect the migration process, and the associated potential EDC human health risks linked to monomers' presence in food. The aim is to contribute to the existing knowledge and understanding of plastic food-packaging monomer migration.

Development and validation of multi-analyte methods for the determination of migrating substances from plastic food contact materials by GC-EI-QqQ-MS and GC-APCI-QTOF-MS

The packaging has proven to be a source of some serious food contaminants, with several chemicals migrating from the food contact material into the food. Therefore, efficient means of control of the migration extend and identification of the migrating substances must be established. The necessity of migration tests has been underlined by the European Union (EU) Regulation No. 10/2011, requiring the evaluation of the presence of intentionally and non-intentionally added substances. To facilitate this purpose, highly sensitive, multi-analyte methods are required. Targeting a wide range of volatile migrating compounds, we developed and validated a GC-EI-QqQ-MS and a GC-APCI-QTOF-MS method for the simultaneous determination of 131 and 126 food packaging substances, respectively. Even though the GC-EI-QqQ-MS method presented increased sensitivity for several of the investigated compounds, covering the existing EU requirements and specific migration limits (SMLs) for all targeted analytes; the complementary high-resolution method inherently enables the possibility of further utilization of the obtained raw data among others for retrospective analysis. The applicability of both methods was tested using 95% v/v aqueous ethanol food simulant, representative for the worst foreseeable conditions of intended use for many food contact material applications. Real food packaging samples belonging to different types of plastic materials were tested toward chemical migration, utilizing different migration protocols, depending on the sample characteristics. The favorable analytical features of both methods enable their use for the direct analysis of the investigated food simulant, overcoming the need for sample preparation. Thus, labor intensive and/or time-consuming pre-concentration procedures, which would furthermore restrict the applicability of the methods to certain groups of analytes and add to the uncertainty of the overall results, could be eliminated.

Comparison of migration and cumulative risk assessment of antioxidants, antioxidant degradation products, and other non-intentionally added substances from plastic food contact materials

Antioxidants are used in the production of synthetic resins to prevent oxidative degradation. However, non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) and the degradation products of antioxidants may contaminate food contact materials (FCM) and migrate into food. Herein, NIAS and antioxidant degradation products in synthetic resins and their migration into food simulants under various conditions were evaluated. Risk assessment was performed based on the toxicity reference values or with threshold of toxicological concern (TTC) approach. The antioxidant degradation products migrated mainly to fatty-food simulants, with the highest migration in isooctane, followed by n-heptane (similar to or lower than isooctane) and 95 % ethanol. Especially, the migration of 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol was high when the FCM was used for the first time under daily use conditions such as ultraviolet sterilization or heating in a pot, oven, or microwave. In addition, 36 target substances were monitored in 142 products of 18 synthetic resins. Of these, 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol was most sensitively detected. Risk assessment demonstrated that all the investigated substances were below the toxicity reference values. However, the risk associated with polyethylene was relatively high compared to other synthetic resins. The cumulative risks of oxidizing Irgafos 168, (z)−9-octadecenamide, tri-o-tolyl phosphite, tri-p-tolyl phosphite, and 7,9-di-tert-butyl-1-oxaspiro(4,5)deca-6,9-diene-2,8-dione using the TTC approach were calculated to range from 34.81 % to 73.74 %, suggesting that the TTC is a more conservative risk assessment.

Application of an improved hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction technique coupled to LC-MS/MS to studying migration of fluorescent whitening agents from plastic food contact materials

In this paper, a new hollow fiber liquid-phase microextraction method was developed to improve the extraction of five fluorescent whitening agents that migrated from plastics food contact materials. Influencing factors, such as the types of membrane, the extraction solvent, the stirring speed, the addition of salt ion, and extraction time, were investigated in detail. Under the optimal conditions, high enrichment factors (71–205) can be obtained with 15 μL extraction solvent. The new method is advantageous; the polypropylene hollow fiber membrane modified by sepiolite nanoparticles had excellent solvent binding force and mass transfer effect compared with the conventional extraction technique. The extracts were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry, the limits of detection were 0.3 or 0.9 ng kg−1 with good correlation coefficients (r 2 ≥ 0.9940) for the five fluorescent whitening agents. The intra-day and inter-day recoveries ranged between 82.6% and 112%, with a relative standard deviation of less than 12%. The established method was successfully applied to the analysis of fluorescent whitening agent migration from four types of plastic food contact materials immersed in three food simulants.

Detecting Micro- and Nanoplastics Released from Food Packaging: Challenges and Analytical Strategies.

Micro- and nanoplastic (pMP and pNP, respectively) release is an emerging issue since these particles constitute a ubiquitous and growing pollutant, which not only threatens the environment but may have potential consequences for human health. In particular, there is concern about the release of secondary pMP and pNP from the degradation of plastic consumer products. The phenomenon is well-documented in relation to plastic waste in the environment but, more recently, reports of pMP generated even during the normal use of plastic food contact materials, such as water bottles, tea bags, and containers, have been published. So far, a validated and harmonized strategy to tackle the issue is not available. In this study, we demonstrate that plastic breakdown to pMP and pNP can occur during the normal use of polyethylene (PE) rice cooking bags and ice-cube bags as well as of nylon teabags. A multi-instrumental approach based on Raman microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and particular attention on the importance of sample preparation were applied to evaluate the chemical nature of the released material and their morphology. In addition, a simple method based on Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy is proposed for pNP mass quantification, resulting in the release of 1.13 ± 0.07 mg of nylon 6 from each teabag. However, temperature was shown to have a strong impact on the morphology and aggregation status of the released materials, posing to scientists and legislators a challenging question: are they micro- or nanoplastics or something else altogether?

Safety assessment of bleached cellulose pulp for use in plastic food contact materials.

The EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes and Processing Aids assessed the safety of the substance bleached cellulose pulp, consisting of cellulose fibres (70–92%) and hemicellulose (8–30%) obtained from pine and spruce wood. The substance is intended to be used ■■■■■ in polyethylene and polypropylene food contact materials. The final articles are intended to be used for all food types and for long‐term storage at room temperature, with or without a short time at higher temperature, including hot‐fill. Low‐density polyethylene samples containing ■■■■■ of the substance were subjected to a broad set of migration tests with food simulants and extraction tests with dichloromethane. The limits of detection ranged from ■■■■■ (when specified). The Panel noted that they do not ensure the detection of genotoxic substances at a concentration leading to a human exposure above the Threshold of Toxicological Concern. Moreover, not all possibly migrating substances were identified or amenable to the analytical methods applied. No toxicological data were provided for the substance itself, as its migration into food is not expected. The safety of the potentially migrating substances of low molecular mass detected was addressed individually and was considered adequate. However, the Panel considered this approach insufficient owing to a substantial fraction of unidentified components. The Panel concluded that the information provided by the applicant does not allow the safety assessment of the substances below 1,000 Da from bleached cellulose pulp from pine and spruce wood used in plastic food contact materials potentially migrating into food. Therefore, the Panel could not conclude on the safety of the use of bleached cellulose pulp from pine and spruce wood as a plastic additive.

Safety assessment of the substance fatty acid-coated nano precipitated calcium carbonate for use in plastic food contact materials.

The EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes and Processing Aids (CEP) assessed the safety of the substance identified by the applicant as ‘fatty acid‐coated nano precipitated calcium carbonate’. It is intended to be used as a filler in all plastics at up to 5% for contact with acidic food and at up to 40% for contact with all other types of food. Articles made with the substance are intended for long‐term storage over 6 months at room temperature and below. No information was provided on the mechanism of coating as to whether there is chemical modification of the surface and/or physical adsorption. The substance was not properly characterised, either as pristine material or when incorporated into plastic. Contrary to the non‐coated material, data show that the coated material does not dissolve fully and quickly under pH conditions simulating gastrointestinal tract. Surface analysis with electron microscopy of low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) samples before and after migration experiments showed major differences that indicate release of the substance from the surface after the tests with 3% acetic acid and to a lesser extent with 10% ethanol. This is consistent with measurable migrations that were up to 39 mg CaCO3/kg when using an LDPE sample made with 5% of the substance in contact with acetic acid for 64 days at 40°C. The required data on the release of nanoparticles and on the potential toxicity of the substance in nanoform were not provided. Therefore, the Panel could not conclude on the safe use of the substance.

Safety assessment of the substance nano precipitated calcium carbonate for use in plastic food contact materials.

The EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes and Processing Aids (CEP) assessed the safety of the substance ‘nano precipitated calcium carbonate’, FCM substance No. 1087, the particles size of which is in the range of ■■■■■, with a median of ■■■■■. The substance is intended to be used as a filler in all plastics at up to 5% w/w for contact with acidic food and at up to 40% w/w for contact with all other types of food. Articles made with the substance are intended for long‐term storage at room temperature or below. The particulate form of the calcium carbonate dissolved rapidly under simulated gastric conditions and, therefore, in accordance with the EFSA Guidance on Particle – Technical Requirements (2021), an assessment of the particles in nanoform is not required and a conventional risk assessment is sufficient. Calcium carbonate, not in nanoform, is authorised for use in plastic FCM without specific migration limit (FCM No. 21) and for use as a food additive (E 170). Migration, from low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) containing 40% of the substance, was below 0.03 mg/kg in isooctane and 95% ethanol, and 5.4 mg/kg in 10% ethanol. For LDPE containing 5% of the substance, corresponding to the maximum intended amount for contact with acidic foods, the migration was 17 mg/kg. Therefore, the CEP Panel concluded that the substance nano precipitated calcium carbonate is not of safety concern for consumers when used as a filler in all types of polymer for all types of food, except for infant food formulae. The Panel noted, however, that for acidic foods, the overall migration limit may be exceeded.

Determination of 11 kinds of ultraviolet absorbents in plastic food contact materials by high performance liquid chromatography

A method for the determination of 11 kinds of ultraviolet (UV) absorbents in food contact materials was established based on high performance liquid chromatography. The target compounds were separated on a Agilent SB C18 (250 mm×4.6 mm×5 μm) column with gradient elution using acetonitrile and water as mobile phase, which analyzed by diode array detector and quantified by external standard method. The results showed that the linear range of the 11 UV absorbents was between 0.2 and 50.0 mg/L (R2≥0.9985), the limits of detection (LODs) were in the range of 0.01-0.05 mg/L, and the limits of quantification (LOQs) were 0.05-0.20 mg/L. The recoveries (R) of blank samples at 0.2, 10 and 50 mg/kg were from 80.2% to 97.5%, and the relative standard deviations (RSD) were ranged from 0.37% to 4.15%. The method had low detection limit, high stability and good repeatability, which could be used for daily detection of UV absorbents in food contact materials.

Migration of formaldehyde from ‘biobased’ bamboo/melamine cups: A Dutch retail survey

Bamboo/melamine cups had become popular, due to their ecofriendly and sustainable image. Some cups are marketed as biobased and biodegradable. These cups are made from melamine-formaldehyde resin to which bamboo fibers or powder are added. They may release formaldehyde and melamine into the beverage. In 2019 the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority conducted a market study. 46 cups were sampled in duplicate and tested for formaldehyde migration. 88% of the cups complied with the migration limit of 15 mg/kg. Some cups showed very high migration values, over 200 mg/kg. There is a high exposure of formaldehyde from other sources (food, environment). When applying a realistic worst-case scenario of a daily intake of 0.4 L of beverage from the cups, the health based guidance value is exceeded at a migration of 19 mg/kg and higher. For some of the cups that had a high migration of formaldehyde, health risks may occur. For food-utensils for babies and young children, the exposure is higher due to their lower body weight. The SML does not provide sufficient protection for babies and young children. Bamboo is not authorized in the EU as additive for plastic food contact materials. Therefore the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and other EU member states have actively banned these products from the market. Finally, bamboo/melamine tableware would suggest having a ‘green’ image and would contribute to the goals of the circular economy to use biobased raw materials, but by using it in combination with melamine-formaldehyde resin may affect food safety.

Determination of 60 Migrant Substances in Plastic Food Contact Materials by Vortex-Assisted Liquid-Liquid Extraction and GC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS.

A GC-HRMS analytical method for the determination of 60 migrant substances, including aldehydes, ketones, phthalates and other plasticizers, phenol derivatives, acrylates, and methacrylates, in plastic food contact materials (FCM) has been developed and validated. The proposed method includes migration tests, according to Commission Regulation (EU) 10/2011, using four food simulants (A, B, C, and D1), followed by vortex-assisted liquid–liquid extraction (VA-LLE) and GC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS analysis in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode, with a resolving power of 30,000 FWHM and a mass accuracy ≤5 ppm. The method was validated, showing satisfactory linearity (R2 ≥ 0.98 from 40 to 400 µg L−1), limits of quantification (40 µg L−1), precision (RSD, 0.6–12.6%), and relative recovery (81–120%). The proposed method was applied to the analysis of field samples, including an epoxy-coated tin food can, a drinking bottle made of Tritan copolyester, a disposable glass made of polycarbonate, and a baby feeding bottle made of polypropylene, showing that they were in compliance with the current European regulation regarding the studied substances.

A Fast and Automated Strategy for the Identification and Risk Assessment of Unknown Substances (IAS/NIAS) in Plastic Food Contact Materials by GC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS: Recycled LDPE as a Proof-of-Concept.

A fast and automated approach has been developed for the tentative identification and risk assessment of unknown substances in plastic food contact materials (FCM) by GC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS. The proposed approach combines GC-HRMS full scan data acquisition coupled to Compound Discoverer™ 3.2 software for automated data processing and compound identification. To perform the tentative identification of the detected features, a restrictive set of identification criteria was used, including matching with the NIST Mass Spectral Library, exact mass of annotated fragments, and retention index calculation. After the tentative identification, a risk assessment of the identified substances was performed by using the threshold of toxicological concern (TTC) approach. This strategy has been applied to recycled low-density polyethylene (LDPE), which could be used as FCM, as a proof-of-concept demonstration. In the analyzed sample, 374 features were detected, of which 83 were tentatively identified after examination of the identification criteria. Most of these were additives, such as plasticizers, used in a wide variety of plastic applications, oligomers of LDPE, and substances with chemical, industrial, or cosmetic applications. The risk assessment was performed and, according to the TTC approach, the obtained results showed that there was no risk associated with the release of the identified substances. However, complementary studies related to the toxicity of the unidentified substances and the potential mixture toxicity (cocktail effects) should be conducted in parallel using bioassays.

Safety of Plastic Food Packaging: The Challenges about Non-Intentionally Added Substances (NIAS) Discovery, Identification and Risk Assessment.

Several food contact materials (FCMs) contain non-intentionally added substances (NIAS), and most of the substances that migrate from plastic food packaging are unknown. This review aimed to situate the main challenges involving unknown NIAS in plastic food packaging in terms of identification, migration tests, prediction, sample preparation, determination methods and risk assessment trials. Most studies have identified NIAS in plastic materials as polyurethane adhesives (PU), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyester coatings, polypropylene materials (PP), multilayers materials, plastic films, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), recycled materials, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Degradation products are almost the primary source of NIAS in plastic FCMs, most from antioxidants as Irganox 1010 and Irgafos 168, following by oligomers and side reaction products. The NIAS assessment in plastics FCMs is usually made by migration tests under worst-case conditions using food simulants. For predicted NIAS, targeted analytical methods are applied using GC-MS based methods for volatile NIAS and GC-MS and LC-MS based methods for semi- and non-volatile NIAS; non-targeted methods to analyze unknown NIAS in plastic FCMs are applied using GC and LC techniques combined with QTOF mass spectrometry (HRMS). In terms of NIAS risk assessment and prioritization, the threshold of toxicological concern (TTC) concept is the most applied tool for risk assessment. Bioassays with sensitive analytical techniques seem to be an efficient method to identify NIAS and their hazard to human exposure; the combination of genotoxicity testing with analytical chemistry could allow the Cramer class III TTC application to prioritize unknown NIAS. The scientific justification for implementing a molecular weight-based cut-off (<1000 Da) in the risk assessment of FCMs should be reevaluated. Although official guides and opinions are being issued on the subject, the whole chain’s alignment is needed, and more specific legislation on the steps to follow to get along with NIAS.

Screening of chemicals migrating from plastic food contact materials for oven and microwave applications by liquid and gas chromatography - Orbitrap mass spectrometry

Contamination of food with chemicals migrating from food contact materials (FCMs) is an important area of food safety. This study was aimed to investigate migration of chemicals from plastic FCMs used for microwave and conventional oven heating. Migration tests were conducted for samples of microwave trays, microwave oven bags, and oven bags. GC- and LC-Orbitrap mass spectrometry (MS) was used for non-targeted screening and identification of chemicals with mass error <5 ppm. A non-targeted identification approach was validated with isotopically labeled chemicals to establish acceptable criteria for identification of migrated compounds. A total of 74 migrated compounds were tentatively identified: 24 chemicals by GC-Orbitrap MS with electron ionization (EI), plus 35 and 19 by LC-Orbitrap MS electrospray ionization (ESI) with positive and negative polarities, respectively. Four migrated chemicals were identified by more than one instrumental analysis. Both intentionally added substances (IAS), i.e. additives used in the production of polymeric materials and plastics, and non-intentionally added substances (NIAS), i.e. derivatives and degradation/oxidation products of IAS, were identified among the migrated chemicals. The levels of 25 migrated chemicals were significantly different (p < 0.05) between microwave treatments and conventional oven treatments, where 20 migrants had higher levels for microwave compared with 5 for conventional oven treatments. For several identified chemicals, no previous reports on their migration from FCMs were found.

A fast SALLE GC–MS/MS multi-analyte method for the determination of 75 food packaging substances in food simulants

A simple and fast method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 75 plastic food contact material (FCM) in liquid food simulants, at levels of a few ng g−1. The method employs an optimised salt-assisted liquid–liquid extraction for all EU-regulated ethanol/H2O food simulants, in the presence of 10% NaCl (simulants A and C) or 5% NaCl (simulant D1), and dichloromethane as the extracting solvent. Gas chromatography with triple-quad MS operating in multiple reaction monitoring acquisition was used, applying isotope dilution with selected deuterated compounds. Adequate sensitivity was demonstrated for all analytes. The results also showed sufficient accuracy for the majority of substances, with recoveries of 70–120% and repeatability (expressed as relative standard deviations, RSDs) smaller than 15%. The method was applied to the analysis of FCM multilayer items after undergoing migration testing according to the specifications of the current EU legislation in force.
