Correlation between plasmon lifetime and near-field enhancement in nanoparticle-on-film systems

Lifetime and near-field enhancement of coupled plasmonic systems have attracted increasing attention in recent years. However, the relationship between them in the coupled plasmon structure has not been systematically revealed. Here, we studied the correlation between the plasmon lifetime and near-field enhancement of the plasmonic gap mode of nanoparticle-on-film systems, which associates localized surface plasmons with propagating surface plasmons. Both proportional and inversely proportional relationships between lifetime and field enhancement can be achieved by tuning the system parameters. The lifetime can be modulated from 5.4 fs to 20.5 fs, with the near-field intensity enhancement changing from 1036-fold to 9960-fold. Furthermore, it is found that the extension of lifetime is influenced by film thickness and limited by the skin depth of 42 nm, and the near-field enhancement of the system is mostly determined by the coupling efficiency of propagating surface plasmons.

High refractive index dielectric coating on plasmonic nanoantennas for strong visible light absorption in small transition metal nanoparticle reactors.

A more practical model for plasmonic core@shell-satellite antenna-reactor photocatalysts is promoted. In contrast to the mainstream view, total light absorption in the Pt nanoparticle (NP) reactors can be further improved by 70% after coating a 10-nm-thick high refractive index TiO2 shell on the large Ag antenna as a result of more Pt NPs undergoing high absorption enhancement. The enhancement effect is maximized at the electric quadrupole (EQ) resonance. Considering the high refractive index of the TiO2 coating and the embedding of the Pt NPs, the underlying physics is addressed within classical electrodynamics, making a necessary supplement to the conventional plasmonic near-field enhancement mechanism. These findings provide a general strategy for developing novel, to the best of our knowledge, visible light photocatalysts made of transition metals directly.

All-Solid-State Optical-Field-Sensitive Detector for Sub-Nanojoule Pulses Using Metal–Insulator Hybrid Nanostructure

We develop an all-solid-state, metal–insulator hybrid device that is capable of detecting an optical field of sub-nanojoule pulses via optical-field-induced tunneling. The tunneling at a gold/aluminum-oxide (Al2O3) interface is driven by an enhanced near-field of a metal–insulator–metal plasmon. Compared to a conventional device with a metal/air interface, we achieve a substantial increase in the tunneling current because of a reduced barrier height, a reduced effective mass of tunneled electrons, an increased plasmonic near-field enhancement, and a denser array of nanoantennas. The device exhibits a remarkable sensitivity to the optical field, which confirms the optical-field-induced tunneling as an emission mechanism. Furthermore, complete encapsulation of the nanoantennas with dielectric materials, coupled with efficient photocurrent generation, improves the durability against optical irradiation.

Nonlocal and cascaded effects in nonlinear graphene nanoplasmonics.

The ability of plasmons to focus light on nanometer length scales opens a wide range of enticing applications in optics and photonics, among which the enhancement of nonlinear light-matter interactions for all-optical modulation and spectral diversification emerges as a prominent theme. However, the subwavelength plasmonic near-field enhancement in good plasmonic materials such as noble metals is hindered by large ohmic losses, while conventional phase-matching of fields in bulk nonlinear crystals is not suitable for realizing nonlinear optical phenomena on the nanoscale. In contrast, anharmonic electron motion of free charge carriers in highly-doped graphene, which supports long-lived, highly-confined, and actively-tunable plasmons, renders the carbon monolayer an excellent platform for both plasmonics and nonlinear optics. Here we theoretically explore the enhancement in nonlinear response that can be achieved by interfacing multiple graphene nanostructures in close proximity to trigger nonlocal effects associated with large gradients in the electromagnetic near field. Focusing on second- and third-harmonic generation, we introduce a semianalytical formalism to describe interacting graphene nanoribbons with independent width, location, and electrical doping, so as to realize configurations in which plasmonic resonances may simultaneously enhance both the fundamental optical excitation frequency and harmonic intermediary and/or output frequencies. Our findings reveal the importance of both passive and active tuning in the design of atomically-thin nanostructures for nonlinear optical applications, and in particular emphasize the role played by nonlocal effects in generating an even-ordered nonlinear response that may contribute to other nonlinear optical processes through a cascaded interaction. We anticipate that our findings can aid in the design of actively-tunable nonlinear plasmonic resonators and metasurfaces.

Quantitative Insights into a Plasmonic Ruler Equation from the Perspective of Enhanced Near Field.

The plasmonic shift of resonance wavelength induced by near-field coupling enables one to measure nanoscale distances optically. Empirically, the well-known ruler equation correlating plasmon shift with interparticle spacing was proposed. Though it has been widely used in analyzing simulation and experimental outcomes, little is known about the underlying physical mechanism of the characteristic exponential form of the plasmon ruler equation and the universal decay constant therein. In this work, we attempt to decrypt these from the perspective of plasmon near-field enhancement. Based on an analytical quasi-normal mode formula for plasmon shifts, we proved that the exponential decaying electric field is the critical reason that results in the exponential form of the plasmon ruler equation and quantitatively, we found that the universal decay constant in the plasmon ruler equation actually reflects the range of the enhanced near field. This work hopefully helps to deepen the understanding of the mechanism of light-matter interaction in corresponding plasmonic processes.

Broadband plasmonic absorption enhancement of perovskite solar cells with embedded Au@SiO2@graphene core–shell nanoparticles

Although perovskite solar cells have shown outstanding photovoltaic performance, there are still various obstacles that limit their performance and that remain as significant challenges. Weak optical absorption rate in the infrared region is a significant drawback for this kind of solar cell. In this paper, Au@SiO2@Graphene nanoparticles (NPs) as nano-photonic inclusions in the perovskite layer are proposed and investigated theoretically. Unlike conventional nanoparticles, these NPs exhibit strong, multiple plasmon resonances at low energies. The effect of geometrical parameters, periodicity, and the location of the Au@SiO2@Graphene NPs in the perovskite layer upon the performance of the PSCs are investigated. Under improved conditions, an absorption enhancement of 32% is obtained compared to pristine devices. Also, the result attained from coupled optical-electrical simulation of the improved device demonstrated 20.05% power conversion efficiency. These improvements have been achieved due to the plasmonic near-field enhancement effects of Au@SiO2@Graphene nanoparticles along with increased light-scattering from these NPs.

Polarization-controlled anisotropy in hybrid plasmonic nanoparticles

Abstract Anisotropy has played a critical role in many material systems, but its controllable creation and modulation have been a long-lasting challenge for the scientific communities. Polarization-addressed anisotropy appears more attractive among all approaches due to its excellent controllability, simplicity, and accuracy, but only a limited number of material systems are applicable for such a concept, which are largely focused on oriented growth. Here, we establish a polarization-dependent anisotropic etching system made of Au@oligomer core–shell nanoparticles (NPs). As the oligomer coatings can be photochemically degraded via two-photon photolithography, the plasmonic near-field enhancement supported by the Au NP cores renders much faster degradation of the oligomer shells along the polarization, resulting in anisotropic Au@oligomer hybrid NPs. Such shape anisotropy leads to polarization-dependent photoluminescence with embedded dyes of methylene blue, which can be used as single-particle-based polarization detector. The oligomer lobes capped at the sides of the Au NP can also function as a protection agent for anisotropic photochemical growth of Au NPs, which evolve into Au nanorods and mushrooms with controlled irradiation time. Such polarization-directed etching of oligomer shells has unique advantages of high local-selectivity, controllability, and versatility for on-chip nanofabrication, which opens many new opportunities for integrated nanophotonic devices.

A Flexible Plasmonic-Membrane-Enhanced Broadband Tin-Based Perovskite Photodetector.

Lead-free perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have been widely investigated for optoelectronic devices because of their excellent electrical and optical properties. However, optoelectronic devices based on such lead-free perovskites still have much lower performance than those made of Pb-based counterparts. Herein, we developed a lead-free photodetector with an enhanced broadband spectral response ranging from 300 to 630 nm. By balancing plasmonic near-field enhancement and surface energy quenching through precisely controlling the thickness of Al2O3 spacer between the CsSnBr3 QDs and silver nanoparticle membrane, the photodetector with 5 nm thick Al2O3 experiences a maximum photocurrent enhancement of 6.5-fold at 410 nm, with a responsivity of 62.3 mA/W and detectivity of 4.27 × 1011 Jones. Moreover, its photocurrent shows a negligible decrease after 100 cycles of bending, which is ascribed to the tension-offset induced by the self-assembled nanoparticle membrane. The proposed plasmonic membrane enhancement provides a great potential for high-performance perovskite optoelectronic devices.

Photonic Fractal Metamaterials: A Metal–Semiconductor Platform with Enhanced Volatile‐Compound Sensing Performance

Advance of photonics media is restrained by the lack of structuring techniques for the 3D fabrication of active materials with long-range periodicity. A methodology is reported for the engineering of tunable resonant photonic media with thickness exceeding the plasmonic near-field enhancement region by more than two orders of magnitude. The media architecture consists of a stochastically ordered distribution of plasmonic nanocrystals in a fractal scaffold of high-index semiconductors. This plasmonic-semiconductor fractal media supports the propagation of surface plasmons with drastically enhanced intensity over multiple length scales, overcoming the 2D limitations of established metasurface technologies. The fractal media are used for the fabrication of plasmonic optical gas sensors, achieving a limit of detection of 0.01 vol% at room temperature and sensitivity up to 1.9nm vol%-1 , demonstrating almost a fivefold increase with respect to an optimized planar geometry. Beneficially to their implementation, the self-assembly mechanism of this fractal architecture allows fabrication of micrometer-thick media over surfaces of several square centimeters in a few seconds. The designable optical features and intrinsic scalability of these photonic fractal metamaterials provide ample opportunities for applications, bridging across transformation optics, sensing, and light harvesting.

Three-Dimensional Gold Nanosphere Hexamers Linked with Metal Bridges: Near-Field Focusing for Single Particle Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering.

Herein, we report the novel strategy for the synthesis of complex 3-dimensional (3D) nanostructures, mimicking the linker molecule-free 3D arrangement of six Au nanospheres at the vertices of octahedrons. We utilized 3D PtAu skeleton for the structural rigidity and deposited Au around the PtAu skeleton in a site-selective manner, allowing us to investigate their surface plasmonic coupling phenomenon and near-field enhancement as a function of sizes of nanospheres, which are directly related to the intrananogap distance and interior volume size. The resulting 3D Au hexamer structures with octahedral arrangement were realized through precise control of the Au growth pattern. The complex 3D Au hexamers were composed of six Au nanospheres connected by thin metal conductive bridges. The standard deviation of the metal conductive bridges and Au nanospheres was within ca. 10%, exhibiting a high degree of homogeneity and precise structural tunability. Interestingly, charge transfer among the six Au nanospheres occurred along the metal conductive bridges leading to surface plasmonic coupling between Au nanospheres. Accordingly, electric near fields were strongly and effectively focused at the vertices, intrananogap regions between Au nanospheres, and interior space, exhibiting well-resolved single-particle surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy signals of absorbed analytes.

Tailoring the optical field enhancement in Si-based structures covered by nanohole arrays in gold films for near-infrared photodetection

We performed numerical simulations of plasmonic near-field enhancement in Si-based structures in near infrared region. Gold films perforated with periodic two-dimensional subwavelength hole arrays were used as the plasmonic couplers. The array periodicity was adjusted to excite the surface plasmon modes at the telecom wavelengths (between 1.3 and 1.55 μm). The field intensity enhancement factor and its spectral position, as a function of hole diameter, demonstrate the maximum at which the Bloch plasmon polariton waves propagating along the Au–Si interface change by a localized surface plasmon mode. The maximum peak wavelength and field intensity enhancement are reached at d/a = 0.5, where d is the hole diameter and a is the array periodicity. An over 14 times field intensity enhancement was obtained at λ = 1.54 μm for d = 200 nm and a = 400 nm. We found that the localized surface plasmon mode is confined mainly under the Au regions along the diagonals of the square lattice of holes. The lateral field distribution for propagating modes has either a hexagonal or square shape, reflecting in-pane symmetry of the grating. For structures with largest holes, the anticrossing of localized mode with the propagating one was observed implying coupling between the modes and formation of a mixed near-field state. The information acquired from the study is valuable for feasible device applications.

Multi-interfacial plasmon coupling in multigap (Au/AgAu)@CdS core-shell hybrids for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen generation.

Plasmon coupling induced intense light absorption and near-field enhancement have vast potential for high-efficiency photocatalytic applications. Herein, (Au/AgAu)@CdS core-shell hybrids with strong multi-interfacial plasmon coupling were prepared through a convenient strategy for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen generation. Bimetallic Au/AgAu cores with an adjustable number of nanogaps (from one to four) were primarily synthesized by well-controlled multi-cycle galvanic replacement and overgrowth processes. Extinction tests and numerical simulations synergistically revealed that the multigap Au/AgAu hybrids possess a gap-dependent light absorption region and a local electric field owing to the multigap-induced multi-interfacial plasmon coupling. With these characteristics, hetero-photocatalysts prepared by further coating of CdS shells on multigap Au/AgAu cores exhibited a prominent gap-dependent photocatalytic hydrogen production activity from water splitting under light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). It is found that the hydrogen generation rates of multigap (Au/AgAu)@CdS have an exponential improvement compared with that of pure CdS as the number of nanogaps increases. In particular, four-gap (Au/AgAu)@CdS core-shell catalysts displayed the highest hydrogen generation rate, that is 96.1 and 47.2 times those of pure CdS and gapless Au@CdS core-shell hybrids. These improvements can be ascribed to the strong plasmon absorption and near-field enhancement induced by the multi-interfacial plasmon coupling, which can greatly improve the light-harvesting efficiency, offer more plasmonic energy, and boost the generation and separation of electron-hole pairs in the multigap catalysts.

Broadband Plasmonic Enhancement of High-Efficiency Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells by Incorporating Au@Ag@SiO2 Core-Shell Nanocuboids.

The introduction of plasmonic additives is a promising approach to boost the efficiency of the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) since they may improve the light harvesting of a solar cell. Herein, we design broadband and strong plasmonic absorption Au@Ag@SiO2 nanocuboids (GSS NCs) as nanophotonic inclusions to achieve plasmon-enhanced DSSCs. These multiple-resonance absorptions arising from GSS NCs can be readily adjusted by altering their structures to complementarily match the absorption spectra of the dyes, especially in weak absorption zones. By subtly regulating the position of nanophotonic inclusions in the photoanodes, not only the plasmonic near-field enhancement but also far-field light scattering could be adequately developed to promote the light harvest and thus the efficiency of DSSCs. The resulting solar cells yield an average efficiency of 10.34%, with a champion value of 10.58%. The electromagnetic simulations are consistent with the experimental observations, further corroborating the synergistic effect of plasmonic improvement in these DSSCs.

Fast response of UV photodetector based on Ag nanoparticles embedded uniform TiO2 nanotubes array

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has drawn a potential research interest for ultraviolent (UV) photodetector (PD) applications because of its tunable bandgap in UV absorption region, low-absorption coefficient in visible region, n-type semiconducting property, and excellent chemical stabilities. In this study, attempts were made to explore the performances of TiO2 nanostructures such as nanotubes (NTs) and nanorods (NRs) based UV PDs embedded with 23 nm plasmonic silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs), which offer the local surface plasmonic resonance or near-field enhancement. The vertical TiO2 NTs and NRs with high uniformity and height of 1 μm were successfully synthesized using simple and low-cost electrochemical anodization and hydrothermal growth techniques, respectively onto Ti substrates. From the x-ray diffraction analysis, it was ascertained that the anatase phase has been formed for NTs, whereas the rutile phase dominated the NRs. All these nanostructures were characterized by various material characterization techniques such as field emission scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV–vis–NIR and Raman spectroscopy to investigate their surface and structural morphologies and absorption spectra. Efforts were put to fabricate Ag/(with or without Ag NPs) TiO2 nanostructures/Ti based UV PDs, where Ag has been utilized as top electrode and Ti served the purpose for bottom electrode. The electrical characteristics such as current–voltage, responsivity, detectivity, external quantum efficiency (EQE), rise and decay times were systematically investigated under 365 nm UV light radiance. Among all the UV PDs, TiO2 NTs anchored with the Ag NPs offer better photocurrent, responsivity (1.37 A W−1), detectivity (5.18 × 1010 Jones), EQE (465.42%), rise (0.43 s) and decay (0.70 s) times. In order to have better insight on the device operational principle, a band diagram was proposed and it was realized that desorption of oxygen ions, increment of free electron carriers, and localized surface plasmonic effect were responsible for obtaining improved photoresponse.

Dynamic Plasmonic Platform To Investigate the Correlation between Far-Field Optical Response and SERS Signal of Analytes.

The design of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) platforms based on the coupling between plasmonic nanostructures and stimuli-responsive polymers has attracted considerable interest over the past decades for the detection of a wide range of analytes, including pollutants and biological molecules. However, the SERS intensity of analytes trapped inside smart hybrid nanoplatforms is subject to important fluctuations because of the spatial and spectral variation of the plasmonic near-field enhancement (i.e., its dependence with the distance to the nanoparticle surface and with the localized surface plasmon resonance). Such fluctuations may impair interpretation and quantification in sensing devices. In this paper, we investigate the influence of the plasmonic near-field profile upon the Raman signal intensity of analytes trapped inside thermoresponsive polymer-coated gold nanoarrays. For this, well-defined plasmonic arrays (nanosquares and nanocylinders) were modified by poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) brushes using surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization. Molecular probes were trapped inside these Au@PNIPAM nanostructures by simple physisorption or by covalent grafting at the end of PNIPAM brushes, using click chemistry. The SERS spectra of molecular probes were studied along various heating/cooling cycles, demonstrating a strong correlation between SERS intensities and near-field spectral profile of underlying nanoparticles, as confirmed by simulations based on the finite difference time domain method. Thermoresponsive plasmonic devices thus provide an ideal dynamic SERS platform to investigate the influence of the near-field plasmonic profile upon the SERS response of analytes.

Ultralarge Area Sub-10 nm Plasmonic Nanogap Array by Block Copolymer Self-Assembly for Reliable High-Sensitivity SERS.

Effective surface enhancement of Raman scattering (SERS) requires strong near-field enhancement as well as effective light collection of plasmonic structures. To this end, plasmonic nanoparticle (NP) arrays with narrow gaps or sharp tips have been suggested as desirable structures. We present a highly dense and uniform Au nanoscale gap array enabled by the customized design of NP shape and arrangement employing block copolymer self-assembly. Block copolymer self-assembly in thin films offers uniform hexagonally packed nanopost template arrays over the entire surface of a 2 in. wafer. Conventional evaporative metal deposition over the nanotemplate surface allows precise geometric control and positional arrangement of metal NPs, constituting tunable, strong plasmonic near-field enhancement particularly at the "hot spots" near interparticular nanoscale gaps. Underlying field distribution has been investigated by a finite-difference time-domain simulation. In the detection of thiophenol, our Au nanogap array shows a remarkable enhancement of Raman intensity greater than ∼104, a standard deviation as small as 12.3% compared to that of the planar Au thin film. In addition, adenine biomolecules can be detected with a detection limit as low as 100 nM. Our approach proposes highly sensitive and reliable SERS on the basis of a scalable, low-cost bottom-up strategy.

Enhanced Plasmonic Particle Trapping Using a Hybrid Structure of Nanoparticles and Nanorods.

Plasmon-enhanced particle trapping was demonstrated using a hybrid structure of nanoparticles and nanorods. In order to intensify localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were deposited on zinc oxide nanorods (ZnONRs). The synergistic effect caused by the hybrid structure was identified experimentally. Numerical analysis revealed that the LSPR-induced photophysical processes such as plasmonic heating and near-field enhancement were improved by the existence of ZnONRs. The role of the ZnONR in enhancing the particle-trapping velocity was explored by examining the scattered electric field, Poynting vector, and temperature gradient over the nanostructures calculated from the simulation. It was found that polystyrene microparticles and Escherichia coli cells were successfully trapped by using the ZnONR/AuNP plasmonic structure. A relatively high dielectric constant and nanorod geometry of ZnO enabled the hybrid substrate to enhance trapping performance, compared with a control case fabricated using only gold nanoislands.

Ultranarrow Second-Harmonic Resonances in Hybrid Plasmon-Fiber Cavities.

We demonstrate second-harmonic generation with ultranarrow resonances in hybrid plasmon-fiber cavities, formed by depositing single-crystalline gold nanorods onto the surface of tapered microfibers with diameters in the range of 1.7-1.8 μm. The localized surface plasmon mode of the single gold nanorod efficiently couples with a whispering gallery mode of the fiber, resulting in a very narrow hybrid plasmon-fiber resonance with a high quality factor Q of up to 250. When illuminated with a tunable 100 fs laser, a sharp SHG peak narrower than half of the spectral width of the impinging laser emerges, superimposed on a broad multiphoton photoluminescence background. The enhancement of the SHG peak of the hybrid system is typically 1000-fold when compared to that of a single gold nanorod alone. Tuning the laser over the hybrid resonance enables second-harmonic spectroscopy and yields an ultranarrow line width as small as 6.4 nm. We determine the second-harmonic signal to rise with the square of the laser power, while the multiphoton photoluminescence background rises with powers between 4 and 6, indicating a very efficient higher-order process. A coupled anharmonic oscillator model is able to describe the linear as well as second-harmonic resonances very well. Our work will open the door to the simultaneous utilization of narrow whispering gallery resonances together with high plasmonic near-field enhancement and should allow for nonlinear sensing and extremely efficient nonlinear light generation from ultrasmall volumes.

Field-enhancing photonic devices utilizing waveguide coupling and plasmonics - a selection rule for optimization-based design.

This paper describes a systematic design study of periodic gold-nanostrip arrays placed on a thin film aimed at enhancing the electric field inside the film when irradiated by light. Based on the study, a "selection rule" is proposed, which provides optimization-based design methods with an a priori choice between field-enhancement dominated by coupling to guided modes, by plasmonic near-field enhancement or by a mix hereof. An appropriate choice of wavelength and grating period is shown to selectively suppress or include waveguiding effects for the optimized designs. The validity of the selection rule is demonstrated through a numerical topology optimization study in which gold nanostrips are optimized for electric-field enhancement in an erbium-doped TiO2 thin film, targeting increased spectral upconversion in the erbium ions. The obtained designs exhibit waveguide excitation within the predicted intervals and, for light polarized perpendicularly to the strips, plasmonic response outside.
