Soil Hydrology Characteristics among Forest Type, Stand Age and Successive Rotation in Eucalyptus Plantations in Southern China

The water holding capacity of forest soil plays a crucial role in ensuring forest productivity, particularly in Eucalyptus urophylla plantations. In this study, we investigated the soil water holding capacity and hydrological properties of Eucalyptus in a subtropical area of Guangxi, China. Different stand ages (five years old, seven years old, and 15 years old) and successive rotations (first, second, and third) of Eucalyptus plantations were compared, with Cunninghamia lanceolata (Chinese Fir) and Pinus massoniana (Pine) plantations serving as references. Soil physical properties, soil hydrological parameters, and litter characteristics were analyzed to assess soil water retention and conservation variations. Our findings revealed that Eucalyptus and Chinese Fir plantation forests exhibit superior soil physical characteristics compared to Pine plantations, resulting in better soil water retention. However, an increase in the age of Eucalyptus plantations significantly diminished the capillary water holding capacity of the soil, despite an increase in surface litter accumulation and litter moisture content. Furthermore, successive rotations led to a notable reduction in soil capillary porosity, soil moisture content, soil saturated permeability, and overall soil water holding capacity. In addition, soil bulk density emerged as a critical factor relating to the hydrological characteristics of Eucalyptus plantation forests. Decreasing soil bulk density in Eucalyptus forests may offer potential for optimizing their water retention function. These results reveal that Eucalyptus management practices significantly alter the hydrological properties of soil through their effects on soil and litter properties, and consequently, stand age, rotation, and species mixing should be given intensive attention in maintaining the maximization of soil water holding capacity.

Increasing stand age increases N deficiency but alleviates relative P limitations in Castanopsis hystrix plantations in Southern China

AbstractForest productivity usually declines with the increase in the age of stand, which may be associated with the disturbance in the balance of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) nutrients. However, the effects of stand age on plantation nutrient balance and productivity in plantation is still unclear. Therefore, an experiment was conducted in this study to investigate the influence of the increase in the age of stand (6‐, 10‐, 15‐, 25‐, 30‐, and 34‐year‐old stands) on plant growth and the dynamics of N and P in Castanopsis hystrix plantations of Southern China. The increase in the age of stand reduced plantation productivity and leaf N:P. Moreover, productivity was found to be positively correlated with leaf N:P, reflecting that the decrease in productivity was related to changes in N and P contents in leaves. Reduction in leaf N:P was associated with declining N content and stable P content in leaves. The decrease in leaf N content may be due to the declining –N and microbial biomass N contents in soil, although activities of N‐acetylglucosaminidase, cellobiohydrolase, and polyphenol oxidase decreased with the increase in stand age. The stability of leaf P content may be associated with the increase in soil total P and microbial biomass P, boosting P supply to plants. In contrast, decreased soil phosphatase activity with the increase in the age of stand likely suggests that no additional P was needed through P mineralization. The findings indicate that increasing stand age would improve N consumption but alleviate relative P limitations. Thus, more attention needs to be paid to N fertilizer management (e.g., 10–15‐year stages) to sustain C. hystrix productivity with stand age.

Wide Distribution of Teratosphaeria epicoccoides and T. destructans Associated with Diseased Eucalyptus Leaves in Plantations in Southern China.

Species of Mycosphaerellaceae and Teratosphaeriaceae represent over 40% of the fungi identified on eucalypt leaves worldwide. These include some important pathogens that mainly cause leaf blight and spot, and result in increasingly negative impacts on global commercial eucalypt industries. Eucalyptus plantations are commonly cultivated in southern China for solid wood and pulp products. However, the species diversity and geographic distribution of Mycosphaerellaceae and Teratosphaeriaceae, associated with diseased plantation Eucalyptus leaves in China, have not been clarified. In this study, we conducted the first systematic surveys and sample collections of Mycosphaerellaceae- and Teratosphaeriaceae-like fungi from diseased plantation Eucalyptus leaves in southern China. In total, 558 isolates were obtained from 59 sampled sites in five provinces. One isolate was isolated from each tree. According to the disease symptoms, conidia morphological characteristics, and DNA sequence comparisons of ITS, tef1 and tub2 gene regions. The 558 isolates were identified as Teratosphaeria epicoccoides (312 isolates; 55.9%) and T. destructans (246 isolates, 44.1%). Both species were widely distributed in the sampled regions in southern China. The genotypes of T. epicoccoides and T. destructans were determined based on ITS, tef1, and tub2 sequences. The results showed that multiple genotypes of each species of T. epicoccoides and T. destructans exist in China. Additionally, isolates with multiple genotypes were obtained in all five sampled provinces. These results suggest that both T. epicoccoides and T. destructans are not clonal. This study proved that both T. epicoccoides and T. destructans are dominant species and widely distributed on diseased Eucalyptus leaves in southern China. The wide geographic distribution and potential high genetic diversity pose challenges for the disease management of Teratosphaeria leaf blight and leaf spot in China.

Ecological stoichiometry of C, N, P and Si of Karst Masson pine forests: Insights for the forest management in southern China

Ecological stoichiometry is an effective method to study the stoichiometric relations and laws of elements in biogeochemical cycle, widely used in studies on nutrient cycles, limiting elements and nutrient utilization efficiency in ecosystems. To explore C, N, P, and Si stoichiometric characteristics and reveal these nutrient cycle processes and mechanisms in the karst Masson pine forests, the typical Masson pine forests of the three different stand ages in southern China were selected as the research objects and the C, N, P, and Si stoichiometric characteristics of soil-plant-litter continuum were studied. The followed results and conclusions were obtained: 1) Content range of TOC (total organic carbon), TN (total N), TP (Total P) and TSi (total Si) of the Masson pine forests was 288.31–334.61, 0.34–6.66, 0.11–1.05, and 0.76–11.4 g·kg−1, respectively. And the ratio range of C:N, C:P, C:Si, N:P, N:Si, and P:Si was 49.95–913.57, 99.98–2872.18, 22.48–429.31, 1.85–6.33, 0.17–6.01, and 0.04–0.91, respectively. 2) The significant differences in C, N, P, and Si stoichiometric characteristics were present between different organs or different forest ages. Leaves had the highest N and P content, while roots were the best enriched organ of Si element. Si content and C:Si were obviously correlated with forest age. 3) Significant N limitation was present in the Masson pine forests. And in the young and middle-aged forests, N limitation was more obvious. 4) The litter nutrients mainly came from branches. And the litter decomposed fast, which played an important role in the nutrient return of barren karst soil. The present results not only revealed the stoichiometric characteristics and cycling processes of C, N, P, and Si elements in the Masson pine forests, but also provided important scientific bases for the artificial management of Masson pine plantations in southern China.

Assessing heavy metal contamination in Amomum villosum Lour. fruits from plantations in Southern China: Soil-fungi-plant interactions

Amomum villosum Lour. fruit is a common healthy food widely cultivated in southern China. Heavy metal contamination of farmland soils has becomes a serious environmental concern in China. Heavy metals in soil can be introduced into the food chain and pose health risks to humans. However, microbial communities may play beneficial roles in plants grown in metal-polluted soils. This study aimed to assess the potential health risks of heavy metals in soils and A. villosum fruits from different production areas and to explore the soil-microbe-plant regulation pattern for heavy metals in A. villosum fruits. Soil and A. villosum fruit samples were collected from nine planting fields in four provinces of southern China. The results showed that soils from seven areas were polluted with heavy metals to different degrees. Cr and Mn were the most serious contaminating elements. However, the accumulation of heavy metals in A. villosum fruit was negligible with no expected human health risks. Partial least squares path analysis of structural equation modeling showed that the accumulation of heavy metals in A. villosum fruits was influenced by multiple factors. More importantly, the PLS-SEM revealed that the heavy metal content in A. villosum fruits was indirectly affected by soil heavy metals through the regulation of the microbial community. Furthermore, some fungal phyla (e.g., Ascomycota and Chytridiomycota) and genera (e.g., Mucor) were related to the heavy metal content in the soil and in A. villosum fruits. The results of this study verified that soil fungal community play an important role in the accumulation of heavy metals in A. villosum fruits. Using fungi provides a potential biological strategy for reducing the health risk posed by heavy metals in food.

Litter decomposition and nutrient release are faster under secondary forests than under Chinese fir plantations with forest development

In terrestrial ecosystems, leaf litter is the main source of nutrients returning to the soil. Understanding how litter decomposition responds to stand age is critical for improving predictions of the effects of forest age structure on nutrient availability and cycling in ecosystems. However, the changes in this critical process with stand age remain poorly understood due to the complexity and diversity of litter decomposition patterns and drivers among different stand ages. In this study, we examined the effects of stand age on litter decomposition with two well-replicated age sequences of naturally occurring secondary forests and Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) plantations in southern China. Our results showed that the litter decomposition rates in the secondary forests were significantly higher than those in the Chinese fir plantations of the same age, except for 40-year-old forests. The litter decomposition rate of the Chinese fir initially increased and then decreased with stand age, while that of secondary forests gradually decreased. The results of a structural equation model indicated that stand age, litter quality and microbial community were the primary factors driving nutrient litter loss. Overall, these findings are helpful for understanding the effects of stand age on the litter decomposition process and nutrient cycling in plantation and secondary forest ecosystems.

Divergent responses of foliar functional traits of understory shrubs to different reforested plantations in southern China

AbstractLeaf functional traits strongly influence plant growth, reproduction, and survival, which are also associated with ecosystem functions. Understory plants are important components of plantation biodiversity. How plantation type affects the performance of different understory shrubs is still poorly understood. In the present study, to address suitable shrub species for the understory management of mature plantations, three common understory species, including Psychotria rubra, Ilex asprella, and Evodia lepta, were selected to investigate the responses of leaf traits to four plantation types (Acacia auriculiformis, Eucalyptus urophylla, Schima superba, and Pinus massoniana). The results showed that the leaf functional traits of understory shrubs were species‐specific among different plantations. The plantation types significantly influenced the specific leaf area (SLA), leaf N:P ratios, chlorophyll, and starch concentrations of these studied shrubs, which may have contributed to the microclimate rather than the soil nitrogen availability originating from different plantations in P‐limited ecosystems. For individual shrubs, I. asprella had higher SLA and chlorophyll contents, indicating that it adapted to shade environment to increase light capture and maintain high light use efficiency. This can help to increase carbon assimilation to cope with the shaded environment. However, the higher starch and nonstructural carbohydrates (NSCs) in the leaves of I. asprella also suggested that it had greater carbon assimilation and storage. Additionally, the similar performance of the three shrubs was also found in four mature plantations, suggesting that the nature of the understory plants also, to some extent, determined their growth and survival rate in the shade environment. Therefore, I. asprella can adapt well to the shaded environment of restored mature plantations. Thus, we recommend that I. asprella is a suitable and alternative species for understory regeneration in the reforested mature plantations of southern China.

Decomposition and nutrient dynamics of stumps and coarse roots of Eucalyptus plantations in southern China

Key messagePrimary remains of Eucalyptus (E. urophylla × E. grandis) plantations following clear-cutting are the stumps and coarse roots. A chrono-sequence approach revealed that the biomass of coarse roots is higher than that of stumps, while they have a smaller rate of biomass loss than stumps. This implies that coarse roots serve as long-term stock for nutrients (carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus).ContextA significant quantity of stumps and coarse roots persist in the forest floor following the clear-cutting of Eucalyptus plantations in China. The decomposition of these stumps and coarse roots is a crucial aspect of the nutrient stocks in plantation ecosystems.AimsWe described the stock and decomposition dynamics of stumps and coarse roots on Eucalyptus plantations, as well as the nutrient loss rate associated with them.MethodsWe used a chrono-sequence of 0–6-year-old clear-cutting stands of Eucalyptus plantations in southern China. The biomass and nutrient stocks of these samples were assessed at different times of decomposition.ResultsThe highest biomass of stump-root system was 33.8 Mg·ha−1, with nutrient stocks were 16.3 Mg·ha−1, and 63.0 kg·ha−1, and 6710.9 g·ha−1, for C, N, and P. The coarse roots accounted for 81–96% of the biomass of the stump-root system. The loss rate of biomass and nutrients from stumps was higher than that of coarse roots. This suggests that the decomposition of coarse roots could serve as a long-term source of nutrients, thereby improving the nutrient status of the plantations.ConclusionStumps and coarse roots serve as significant nutrient stocks that decay at varying rates. The loss of nutrients must be considered while analyzing the decomposition dynamics following clear-cutting in Eucalyptus plantations.

Calonectria species associated with diseased leaves and soils in southern China Eucalyptus plantations

Calonectria leaf blight (CLB) is one of the most important diseases of Eucalyptus trees grown in plantations. This disease poses a serious threat to the sustainability of Eucalyptus plantations in southern China. To better understand the causal agents of CLB, we collected samples of diseased leaves and soil from Eucalyptus plantations from nine regions in Guangdong Province where the disease has become a serious problem. A total of 606 Calonectria isolates were purified from the samples, with 399 and 207 originating from diseased leaves and soils, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses utilizing six gene regions resolved 303 isolates in the C. kyotensis species complex and an equal number of isolates in the C. reteaudii species complex. These two complexes were represented by ten known Calonectria species, including C. aconidialis (12.0%), C. curvispora (0.3%), C. hongkongensis (24.8%), C. ilicicola (0.9%), and C. kyotensis (12.0%) in the C. kyotensis species complex, and C. crousiana (1.0%), C. Guangdongensis (0.3%), C. pseudoreteaudii (40.7%), C. queenslandica (7.3%), and C. reteaudii (0.7%) in the C. reteaudii species complex. Pathogenicity tests showed that all species were capable of causing disease on two tested Eucalyptus genotypes, albeit at varying degrees of aggressiveness. Most isolates (98.3%) in the C. reteaudii species complex were from the diseased leaves, indicating that species in this complex are the main causal agents of CLB outbreak. In addition, a significant number of the C. kyotensis species complex isolates (66.7%) from the soil samples could also cause the disease on Eucalyptus leaves.

Characterization of Pseudofusicoccum Species from Diseased Plantation-Grown Acacia mangium, Eucalyptus spp., and Pinus massoniana in Southern China.

Fungi from Pseudofusicoccum (Phyllostictaceae, Botryosphaeriales) have been reported as pathogens, endophytes, or saprophytes from various woody plants in different countries. Recently, Botryosphaeriales isolates were obtained from the dead twigs of Acacia mangium, Eucalyptus spp., Pinus massoniana, and Cunninghamia lanceolata in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, and Fujian Provinces in southern China. This study aimed to understand the diversity, distribution, and virulence of these Pseudofusicoccum species on these trees. A total of 126 Pseudofusicoccum isolates were obtained, and the incidences of Pseudofusicoccum (percentage of trees that yielded Pseudofusicoccum) on A. mangium, P. massoniana, Eucalyptus spp., and C. lanceolata were 21%, 2.6%, 0.5%, and 0%, respectively. Based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1), and β-tubulin (tub2) loci, 75% of the total isolates were identified as P. kimberleyense, and the remaining isolates were identified as P. violaceum. For P. kimberleyense, the majority of isolates (83%) were from A. mangium, and the rest were from P. massoniana (14%) and Eucalyptus spp. (3%). Similarly, the proportion of isolates of P. violaceum from A. mangium, P. massoniana, and Eucalyptus spp. were 84%, 13%, and 3%, respectively. Inoculation trials showed that the two species produced expected lesions on the tested seedlings of A. mangium, E. urophylla × E. grandis, and P. elliottii. This study provides fundamental information on Pseudofusicoccum associated with diseases in main plantations in southern China.

Calonectria queenslandica: Causal Agent of Eucalyptus Leaf Blight in Southern China.

Calonectria leaf blight caused by Calonectria spp. is among the most serious diseases affecting the health and sustainability of Eucalyptus plantations in southern China. Recent outbreaks of this disease in GuangDong Province prompted a need to identify the species involved. Typical symptoms of Calonectria leaf blight were observed on 2-year-old Eucalyptus urophylla × E. grandis trees in a plantation in the ZhaoQing region. In total, 38 Calonectria isolates were collected from 32 diseased trees. All isolates were identified using DNA sequence analyses of the translation elongation factor 1-α (tef1), β-tubulin (tub2), calmodulin (cmdA), and histone H3 (his3) gene regions. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that Calonectria queenslandica was the dominant species, accounting for 81.6% of the isolates collected. Other species isolated included C. pseudoreteaudii (10.5%), C. reteaudii (5.3%), and C. aconidialis (2.6%). This is the first report of C. queenslandica in China and all isolates had identical sequences in all four gene regions. PCR amplification using primers targeting the MAT1-1-1 and MAT1-2-1 genes in all C. queenslandica isolates revealed that only the MAT1-2 idiomorph was present. The results suggest that C. queenslandica was introduced into the sampled area with very limited genetic diversity. Pathogenicity tests were conducted on two Eucalyptus genotypes widely planted in the GuangDong Province using isolates representing all species collected. The results showed that these species could all cause disease but the predominance of C. queenslandica on infected trees suggests that it is the major driver of the disease problem studied. Different Eucalyptus genotypes used in the pathogenicity tests differed in susceptibility to infection by the Calonectria spp. tested, providing opportunities to avoid leaf blight by deploying disease-tolerant planting stock.

Divergent effects of short-term warming on microbial resource limitation between topsoil and subsoil in a young subtropical Chinese fir forest

Microbes depolymerize soil organic matter to supply themselves with carbon (C), and nutrients such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). In this way, microbial resource limitations play an important role in characterizing the biogeochemical cycle dynamics of the ecosystem. However, the effect of warming on microbial resource limitations, especially in resource-poor subsoils, remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effects of warming (+ 5 °C above ambient) on microbial resource limitation and explored their relationships with soil physicochemical properties and microbial community structure in topsoil (0–10 cm) and subsoil (40–60 cm) in a Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) plantation in southern China. Microbial resource limitation with warming treatment was assessed via vector analysis of soil extracellular enzymatic stoichiometry after two years. We found warming aggravated microbial C limitation in the topsoil but alleviated microbial C limitation in the subsoil, while it shifted the relative nutrient limitation from P limitation to N limitation in the subsoil. Soil microbial C limitation was explained by soil properties (specifically, ammonium nitrogen) in the topsoil while by microbial community composition in the subsoil based on variance partition analysis. The soil microbial nutrient limitation was explained by soil properties in the topsoil and subsoil. The decrease in actinomycetes abundance in the warming treatment may have led to a decreased microbial C limitation in the subsoil. Our study highlighted the differences in warming effects between the topsoil and subsoil. We argue that the microbial resource demand of the subsoil should be further implemented in the study of soil biogeochemistry to improve the prediction of the impact of climate warming on soil C dynamics.

Mixing planting with native tree species reshapes soil fungal community diversity and structure in multi-generational eucalypt plantations in southern China.

The continuous planting pattern of eucalypt plantations negatively affects soil quality. A mixed planting pattern using native species implanted in pure plantations has been considered a preferable measure for this problem. However, the impact of this approachon the structure and function of fungal communities is not clear. Here, harvesting sites that had undergone two generations of eucalypt plantations were selected to investigate soil fungal community structure and the co-occurrence network characteristics in response to two silvicultural patterns involving the third generation of eucalypt plantations (E) and mixed plantations of Eucalyptus. urograndis × Cinnamomum. camphora (EC) and E. urograndis × Castanopsis. hystrix (EH). Compared with the first generation of eucalypt plantations (CK), E markedly weakened enzyme activities associated with carbon-, nitrogen-. and phosphorus-cycling. Reduced soil fungal alpha diversity, and elevated the relative abundance of Basidiomycota while decreasing the abundance of Ascomycota. In contrast, EC and EH not only enhanced fungal alpha diversity, but also reshaped fungal composition. At the class level, E caused an enrichment of oligotrophic Agaricomycetes fungi, classified into symbiotroph guild, while EC markedly decreased the abundance of those fungi and increased the abundances of Sordariomycetes, Dothideomycetes, Eurotiomycetes, and Tremellomycetes fungi, which were classified into saprotroph or pathotroph guild. Moreover, fungal network complexity and robustness topological attributes were higher or significantly higher in mixed plantations soils compared with those of pure eucalypt plantation E. Furthermore, fungal diversity, structure, and functional taxa were significantly affected by soil organic matter, pH, total nitrogen, and nitrate nitrogen.

Decomposition of harvest residues and soil chemical properties in a Eucalyptus urophylla × grandis plantation under different residue management practices in southern China

Retained residues can return large amounts of nutrients to soil in high-intensity management eucalypt plantations, in which recycling of nutrients is critical for soil quality and forest sustainability. However, the effects of different residue treatments on eucalypt residue decomposition remain unclear. The aim in this study was to determine residue decomposition and nutrient release and soil chemical properties under different treatments of residues in a Eucalyptus urophylla × grandis plantation in southern China. Harvest residues were removed (RR), retained and spread evenly on the soil surface (ER), or retained but stacked into strips on the soil surface (SR). Decomposition of leaves was significantly faster than that of twigs and thick branches and was negatively correlated with initial carbon:nitrogen ratio. The loss of potassium was rapid, whereas losses of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus were generally slow. Compared with SR, mass loss and nutrient release accelerated significantly in ER, with shorter half-lives of leaves, twigs, and thick branches. The lowest levels of soil nutrients were in RR, but there were no significant differences between ER and SR. Thus, in this study, residue decomposition was affected by residue type and residue treatment. Decomposition of residues affected soil nutrients by affecting nutrient outflow. In the ER treatment, residues accelerated nutrient cycling and facilitated the accumulation of soil organic carbon, but appropriate fertilization is still needed in E. urophylla × grandis plantations. However, future studies are required to determine whether changes in decomposition rate under different residue management practices lead to long-term changes in soil organic carbon content.

Physiological traits and response strategies of four subtropical tree species exposed to drought

World-wide, forests are experiencing drought-induced mortality. However, physiological adaptation to drought is highly variable, which may lead to differential mortality patterns and alter community structure. In this study, saplings of four common tree species ( Ormosia pinnata , Dalbergia odorifera , Castanopsis fissa and Michelia macclurei ) grown in subtropical plantations in southern China were subjected to average rainfall and three drought treatments, consisting of low (25% rainfall reduction), moderate (50% rainfall reduction) and high (75% rainfall reduction) drought. To investigate their drought response strategies and select tree species with higher drought tolerance, we examined plant traits, including tree growth, stomatal regulation, water relations, carbon dynamics and morphology, that might contribute to drought tolerance. We found that O. pinnata adapted to drought by decreasing turgor loss point (TLP) and increasing leaf dry matter content and leaf mass per area (LMA). D. odorifera exhibited low leaf minimum conductance and high LMA as the key drought traits to reduce water loss. C. fissa was slowest to initiate stomatal closure but completed stomatal closure more rapidly than the other species. Drought reduced light-saturated photosynthetic rates (A sat ) for O. pinnata , D. odorifera and C. fissa primarily due to declining stomatal conductance (g s ), with lesser limitations due to the biochemical capacity of Rubisco carboxylation (V cmax ) and electron transport (J max ). M. macclurei was the first species to close stomata. Drought did not affect A sat for M. macclurei due to stable photosynthetic biochemical processes; however, V cmax regulation of A sat increased with drought intensity. There was trait variation in the capacity of study trees to tolerate drought, with M. macclurei exhibiting the highest capacity to tolerate drought due to key stomatal (earlier stomatal closure) and hydraulic (lower TLP) traits reducing plant water loss with progressive drought stress. • Selecting species with morphological and physiological traits that confer high drought tolerance and resistance will be critical for designing and managing plantations. • M. macclurei might be the best adapted plantation tree for growth in future drier climates. • M. macclurei exhibited high drought avoidance and resistance, and maintained photosynthesis.

Contrasting Effect of Thinning and Understory Removal on Soil Microbial Communities in a Subtropical Moso Bamboo Plantation

Thinning and understory clearance are among the two most popular forest management practices carried out to improve stand productivity in subtropical plantations. Unfortunately, studies have not fully explored the single and combination effect of thinning and understory clearance on soil microbial properties. By conducting a field manipulation experiment in a subtropical moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) plantation in Southern China, we assessed the effects of thinning, understory clearance, and their combination on soil microbial phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) three years after treatments were first applied. We also examined the changes in soil properties after thinning and/or understory clearance. Thinning decreased soil fungal and bacterial PLFAs, and consequently soil total microbial PLFAs due to the increased soil NH4+-N, and NO3−N concentrations. Understory clearance decreased soil pH and soil water content resulting in increased soil fungal PLFAs and the ratio of soil fungal to bacterial (F:B). In addition, thinning and understory clearance caused apparent interactive effects on soil total microbial PLFAs and bacterial PLFAs, and the negative influence of thinning on soil total microbial and bacterial PLFAs were partly compensated by understory clearance. These results suggest the contrasting and interactive effect of thinning and understory clearance should be considered to assess the changes of soil microbial community and ecological processes in subtropical moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) plantations in southern China.

Rotation age extension synergistically increases ecosystem carbon storage and timber production of Chinese fir plantations in southern China.

Afforestation is an effective method to increase carbon (C) sinks and address climate change. It is crucial to understand how the stand growth affects C sequestration capacity, especially when the trade-offs with timber production from plantations have not been fully examined. We used a chronosequence approach to estimate C storage in Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.) plantations (including the trees, understory, litter, and soils) at seven stand ages (3, 8-11, 16, 21, 25, 29, and 32 years). Ecosystem C storage increased nonlinearly from 76.4 to 282.2tha-1 with stand age and was fitted with a logistic model that had a maximum C storage and age of 271.9tha-1 and 33 years, respectively, to reach 95% of the maximum stored C. The C increment was mainly contributed by an increase in tree biomass, which ranged from 2.8 to 177.7tha-1 and comprised 4-64% of the total ecosystem C. Live root C (sum of the stump, coarse, and fine root C) showed a logistic increase from 2.0 to 26.3tha-1 with stand age and constituted 2.5-9.3% of ecosystem C. Understory plants and litter represented a small pool (<2% of ecosystem C). The C storage in shrubs and litter slightly increased, while that in herbs decreased as the stands aged. Soil C storage was an important and relatively stable pool, ranging from 69.6 to 130.1tha-1. Stand volume was also best fitted with a logistic model with a maximum value of 552.6m3ha-1. Additionally, the time needed to reach 95% of the maximum volume was 25 years. Hence, extending the rotation age to over 30 years for Chinese fir plantations could potentially maximize the synergistic benefits of C storage to mitigate climate change and obtain timber products for economic profit.

Responses to subtropical climate in radial growth and wood density of Chinese fir provenances, southern China

Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.) is a native tree species endemic to China and produces timber with high economic value. It is essential to select a provenance with more optimal adaptability to counteract the potential adverse effects of climate change. However, only a few dendroecology analyses of the variation in Chinese fir provenance climate response have been performed. Therefore, we obtained radial growth (tree ring width, earlywood width and latewood width) and wood density (earlywood density, latewood density, minimum density and maximum density) chronologies for 52 Chinese fir provenances grown in a common garden plantation in southern China. Tree-ring analysis methods (dendrochronology) were used to quantify the influence of climate on radial growth and wood densities of the Chinese fir provenances over a 32-year period (1981–2013). The results showed that the mean values of ring widths and wood densities were significantly related to latitude and longitude at the seed-source origin, respectively. Our study also confirmed that tree ring width is primarily sensitive to summer temperature, whereas parameter maximum density contains the strongest climate signal about spring precipitation. Along with a positive effect of warm winter (December and January) on radial growths, high temperatures in summer (July to September) had a negative effect on tree ring widths. Furthermore, the maximum density chronologies shared a significant negative response to the current April precipitation. However, our findings demonstrate that there is the greatest differentiation among Chinese fir provenances in the strength of the correlations between climate variables (temperature and precipitation) and tree ring indices. Based on responses to temperature and precipitation, Chinese fir provenances from the continuous China distribution range can be divided into several geographic groups along a longitudinal and latitudinal gradient. In general, our results suggest that in developing models to predict the response of Chinese fir to changing climate, it is necessary to include intraspecific differentiation in acclimation and adaptation to environmental factors.

Pathogenicity of six Calonectria species isolated from five soil layers in a Eucalyptus plantation

AbstractThe genus Calonectria includes species that are pathogens of many plants. Calonectria leaf blight is a serious threat to Eucalyptus plantations in China and elsewhere in the world. Some Calonectria recovered from the surface layer (&lt;20 cm) of soils can cause typical leaf blight symptoms on Eucalyptus trees. However, pathogenicity tests of Calonectria species from deeper soil layers have not been conducted. We tested the pathogenicity of 42 isolates of Calonectria aconidialis, C. chinensis, C. hongkongensis, C. ilicicola, C. kyotensis and C. orientalis obtained from 0–20, 20–40, 40–60, 60–80 and 80–100 cm soil layers in one Eucalyptus plantation in southern China. All the Calonectria isolates were pathogenic to two Eucalyptus genotypes. For isolates of the same Calonectria species from different soil layers, there was no evidence of correlation between their pathogenicity and soil depth. The pathogenicity of some isolates found in deeper soil layers was stronger than isolates in shallower soil layers. This may increase the challenges of controlling the diseases caused by these fungi. This study performed the first pathogenicity test for C. chinensis, C. kyotensis and C. orientalis on plants, and the first pathogenicity test for C. ilicicola on Eucalyptus. Research results in this study helped to clarify the potential threats of Calonectria species in deeper soil layers posed to Eucalyptus plantations.
