The Interactive Effects of Deficit Irrigation and Bacillus pumilus Inoculation on Growth and Physiology of Tomato Plant.

The effects of inoculating plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and soil water deficits on crop growth and physiology remain largely unknown. Here, the responses of leaf gas exchange, growth, and water use efficiency (WUE) of tomato plants to Bacillus pumilus (B.p.) inoculation under four irrigation strategies (I1-I4) were investigated in a greenhouse. Results showed that soil water deficits, especially at I4 (20%, v/v), significantly decreased leaf stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration rate (Tr), and photosynthetic rate (An), and the decrease of gs and Tr were more pronounced than An. Reduced irrigation regimes significantly lowered dry matter and plant water use both in the non-B.p. control and the B.p. plants, while reduced irrigation significantly increased plant WUE, and B.p. inoculation had little effect on this parameter. Synergistic effects of PGPR and deficit irrigation on leaf gas exchange, leaf abscisic acid content, and stomatal density were found in this study, and specifically, B.p. treated plants at I4 possessed the highest WUE at stomatal and leaf scales, suggesting that B.p. inoculation could optimize water use and partly alleviate the negative effects of soil water deficit. These findings provide useful information for effective irrigation management and the application of PGPR in agriculture in the future.

Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and their eco-friendly strategies for plant growth regulation: a review

As a natural engineer, Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) play an important role in increasing plant growth, yield and enhancing plant tolerance to stressful conditions. These beneficial bacteria take up their position in the rhizosphere, around the plants’ root tissues. They may be in, or on their host tissues and help to provide nutrients to their host plants. For sustainable agriculture, PGPR transmit their extensive assistance in ecosystem management, soil structure maintenance, stress management and plant morphology and physiology modulation in an environmentally friendly manner. Plant- PGPR interactions also stimulate nutrient acquisition and accumulation, improve plant performance and enhance plants’ tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses. Beside these, PGPR are good biofertilizers and safe for our environment. Nanotechnological advances with PGPR applications are important today to increase the impact of PGPR in agriculture. Undoubtedly, PGPR concept is intimately involved with agriculture, horticulture, forestry and they are too enough to establish a vibrant environment. In this review we have focused on the versatility of PGPR-their performance and aimed to address some future prospects of PGPR as an eco-friendly tool for plant growth regulation.

The Role of Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) in Mitigating Plant’s Environmental Stresses

Phytoremediation is a cost-effective and sustainable technology used to clean up pollutants from soils and waters through the use of plant species. Indeed, plants are naturally capable of absorbing metals and degrading organic molecules. However, in several cases, the presence of contaminants causes plant suffering and limited growth. In such situations, thanks to the production of specific root exudates, plants can engage the most suitable bacteria able to support their growth according to the particular environmental stress. These plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) may facilitate plant growth and development with several beneficial effects, even more evident when plants are grown in critical environmental conditions, such as the presence of toxic contaminants. For instance, PGPR may alleviate metal phytotoxicity by altering metal bioavailability in soil and increasing metal translocation within the plant. Since many of the PGPR are also hydrocarbon oxidizers, they are also able to support and enhance plant biodegradation activity. Besides, PGPR in agriculture can be an excellent support to counter the devastating effects of abiotic stress, such as excessive salinity and drought, replacing expensive inorganic fertilizers that hurt the environment. A better and in-depth understanding of the function and interactions of plants and associated microorganisms directly in the matrix of interest, especially in the presence of persistent contamination, could provide new opportunities for phytoremediation.

Bio-priming of seeds: Plant stress management and its underlying cellular, biochemical and molecular mechanisms

Exposure of crops to stress is the most significant barrier to agricultural output and food security worldwide. Stress induces changes in plants’ physiological functions, which leads to lower plant growth and agricultural yield. Plants undergo a variety of molecular, cellular, and physiological changes to combat various abiotic stresses. Plants suffer from increased osmotic pressure outside the root due to osmotic stresses like drought or salt stress that ultimately result in reduced water availability to plant roots. In addition to morphological modifications, physiological changes such as lower leaf osmotic potential, accumulation of osmoprotectants, increased antioxidant activities, and so on occur in response to such abiotic stresses. Seed priming is a novel yet simple technique that involves the use of beneficial and eco-friendly biological agents to improve the physiological functioning of seeds. This technique also plays a vital role in restoring agro-ecological balances through the improvement of soil fertility or by decreasing soil and water contamination. An understanding of the mechanisms involved in seed bio-priming with plant growth-promoting microbes is very crucial to efficiently utilise this technique towards agricultural sustainability. It is generally thought that the advancement of metabolic processes along with activation of repairing systems during the pre-germination stage are the central reasons behind growth promotion and acquired stress tolerance. The application of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria in agriculture has been emerging to improve stress resilience. Bio-priming of seeds ensures early protein and DNA synthesis, and also helps in effective mitochondrial development. This review aims to summarise the current state of understanding of the mechanisms involved in this eco-friendly technique.

Effects of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria in plant resistance to environmental stress

Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) is a beneficial microbe that occupies the rhizosphere of the plant, and is able to enhance crop productivity and offers an attractive way to replace chemical fertilizers, pesticides and supplements. Plants are immobile living organisms, so they cannot move to search for better conditions. PGPR helps the plant tolerate many types of environmental stresses, one of these stresses is drought stress. The studies reveal the important role of PGPR in agriculture and confirm that PGPR are very beneficial to the environment by increasing the crop yields under drought stress, in the presence of pathogens and in poor soils.

Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria: Context, Mechanisms of Action, and Roadmap to Commercialization of Biostimulants for Sustainable Agriculture.

Microbes of the phytomicrobiome are associated with every plant tissue and, in combination with the plant form the holobiont. Plants regulate the composition and activity of their associated bacterial community carefully. These microbes provide a wide range of services and benefits to the plant; in return, the plant provides the microbial community with reduced carbon and other metabolites. Soils are generally a moist environment, rich in reduced carbon which supports extensive soil microbial communities. The rhizomicrobiome is of great importance to agriculture owing to the rich diversity of root exudates and plant cell debris that attract diverse and unique patterns of microbial colonization. Microbes of the rhizomicrobiome play key roles in nutrient acquisition and assimilation, improved soil texture, secreting, and modulating extracellular molecules such as hormones, secondary metabolites, antibiotics, and various signal compounds, all leading to enhancement of plant growth. The microbes and compounds they secrete constitute valuable biostimulants and play pivotal roles in modulating plant stress responses. Research has demonstrated that inoculating plants with plant-growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) or treating plants with microbe-to-plant signal compounds can be an effective strategy to stimulate crop growth. Furthermore, these strategies can improve crop tolerance for the abiotic stresses (e.g., drought, heat, and salinity) likely to become more frequent as climate change conditions continue to develop. This discovery has resulted in multifunctional PGPR-based formulations for commercial agriculture, to minimize the use of synthetic fertilizers and agrochemicals. This review is an update about the role of PGPR in agriculture, from their collection to commercialization as low-cost commercial agricultural inputs. First, we introduce the concept and role of the phytomicrobiome and the agricultural context underlying food security in the 21st century. Next, mechanisms of plant growth promotion by PGPR are discussed, including signal exchange between plant roots and PGPR and how these relationships modulate plant abiotic stress responses via induced systemic resistance. On the application side, strategies are discussed to improve rhizosphere colonization by PGPR inoculants. The final sections of the paper describe the applications of PGPR in 21st century agriculture and the roadmap to commercialization of a PGPR-based technology.

Streptomyces as a plant's best friend?

Here we discuss the advantages of the majority of this versatile and diverse group of microorganisms for plant health and growth as demonstrated by their contribution to disease-suppressive soils, their antifungal and antibacterial activities, their ability to produce volatile compounds and their capacity to enhance plant biomass. Although much is still to be discovered about the colonization strategies and molecular interactions between plant roots and these microorganisms, they are destined to become important players in the field of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria for agriculture.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR): emergence in agriculture

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are the rhizosphere bacteria that can enhance plant growth by a wide variety of mechanisms like phosphate solubilization, siderophore production, biological nitrogen fixation, rhizosphere engineering, production of 1-Aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase (ACC), quorum sensing (QS) signal interference and inhibition of biofilm formation, phytohormone production, exhibiting antifungal activity, production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), induction of systemic resistance, promoting beneficial plant-microbe symbioses, interference with pathogen toxin production etc. The potentiality of PGPR in agriculture is steadily increased as it offers an attractive way to replace the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and other supplements. Growth promoting substances are likely to be produced in large quantities by these rhizosphere microorganisms that influence indirectly on the overall morphology of the plants. Recent progress in our understanding on the diversity of PGPR in the rhizosphere along with their colonization ability and mechanism of action should facilitate their application as a reliable component in the management of sustainable agricultural system. The progress to date in using the rhizosphere bacteria in a variety of applications related to agricultural improvement along with their mechanism of action with special reference to plant growth-promoting traits are summarized and discussed in this review.
