Effect of various fibers and rice husk ash on the workability of self-compacting concrete

AbstractThe study aims to investigate and find natural fiber as concrete reinforcement using the self-compacting concrete method. Methods of adding fiber and self-compacting concrete methods are exciting because these two methods have different characteristics and advantages. Therefore, the performance of the fresh-state flow capability of the self-compacting concrete method, which contains various fibers, was observed. Coconut fiber, pineapple leaf fiber, ijuk sugar palm fiber, and artificial polypropylene fiber were used with varying compositions of 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7% by mass of binder. The results show that coconut and pineapple fiber concrete met the European Guidelines for Self-Compacting Concrete standards. The coconut and pineapple fiber concrete performed admirably in all tests.

Preparation and characterization of carboxymethyl microcrystalline cellulose from pineapple leaf fibre

Highly functional and robust biobased materials are still in research to produce valuable composites for various applications. The literature shows the gap of new raw biobased materials in market which can functionally tuned and structurally modified for development of 2d/3d architectures. Thus, in the present study, very cheap, easily available agricultural waste, pineapple leaf fiber (PL-raw) was used for the isolation of microcrystalline cellulose (PL-MCC) and further functionalized using upscaled chemical approach to carboxymethyl microcrystalline cellulose (PL-CMMCC). Very advanced techniques like Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) served to characterize the raw material, high crystalline PL-MCC, and modified carboxy methyl MCC. FTIR determined presence of different absorbed peak at approximately 1620.2 cm−1, and at 1423.8 cm−1, carboxyl groups were assigned to PL-CMMCC. On the other hand, the XRD findings verified that PL-CMMCC’s crystalline structure has decreased. Analysis by SEM revealed a damaged surface morphology for PL-CMMCC. Following chemical treatments, the EDX analysis revealed that each fiber sample contained a highly pure cellulose elemental composition. Thus, results explain the utilization of agricultural waste, pineapple leaf fiber to high valuable products like highly crystalline PL-MCC, in addition further modification of PL-MCC could leads to formation of highly functional material that could be used for other applications too in future.

Facile fabrication of 3D-printed cellulosic fiber/polylactic acid composites as low-cost and sustainable acoustic panels

This work presents a green, cost-effective and eco-friendly strategy to reduce noise pollution by developing biopolymer-based 3D-printed acoustic panels. We successfully fabricated two series of composites by varying the weight percentage (wt%) of cellulose fibers of water hyacinth (WH) and pineapple leaf (PAL), with polylactic acid (PLA) as the matrix via the heat-press method. All samples were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Physico-mechanical properties, including hardness, tensile, and impact strength, were improved with increasing fiber loading. Filaments of 1 wt% water hyacinth fibers (WHFs) in PLA (1 WHF/PLA) and 1 wt% pineapple leaf fibers (PALFs) in PLA (1 PALF/PLA) were prepared and tested for 3D printability. The sound absorption coefficients (α) of the 3D-printed panels were investigated from 500 to 5000 Hz sound frequency range. The 3D-printed 1 WHF/PLA and 1 PALF/PLA acoustic panels achieve a maximum α (α-max) of 0.55 and 0.83 at 5000 and 4000 Hz, respectively, featuring the first work to report α-max > 0.5 at low fiber loadings in the high-frequency sound range. The tensile strength of the 3D-printed versions is significantly higher than non-3D-printed counterparts and commercial acoustic absorbers. Our data suggest the prepared 3D-printed panels are excellent candidates for acoustic applications at high-frequency noises. This study exhibits a facile, environmentally benign and sustainable approach to construct highly efficient and mechanically robust biopolymer-based 3D-printed sound-proof panels, which have promising potential as green engineering materials. Interestingly, this research also proposes a mitigation technology for the freshwater invader, Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinths).

Effect of Mercerization on the Properties of Cellulose Fiber and Cellulose Hydrogel Extracted from Pineapple Leaf Fiber

AbstractThis study investigated the effects of alkaline treatment on the pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) cellulose extraction and the properties of cellulose hydrogel. PALF was treated with different concentrations of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) (2 to 10 wt %) and at room temperature (RT) and 80 °C. Then, extracted cellulose was then dissolved in N,N’‐dimethyl acetamide (DMAc)/lithium chloride (LiCl) solvent system and formed into hydrogel by phase inversion method. The Fourier transform infrared spectra shows the peak disappearance at 1606 cm−1 proves that lignin was removed starting from 6 and 4 wt % NaOH at RT and 80 °C, respectively. Higher NaOH concentrations treatment increased thermal stability and the crystallinity (71 to 79 %) of the fibers. Higher NaOH concentration and treatment temperature enhanced cellulose extraction from PALF, leading to more physical crosslinking during hydrogel formation. High amount of cellulose extracted decreased the hydrogel's swelling equilibrium and increased the gel fraction. The highest transmittance (87.8 %) and the lowest intensity of absorbance (at 280 nm corresponding to lignin) were obtained by the hydrogel prepared with PALF treated with 8 wt % NaOH at 80 °C. Clearly, this research findings provide new insights into optimizing cellulose extraction using alkaline treatment specifically for cellulose hydrogel formation.

This research aims to make composite boards made from areca nut fiber and pineapple leaf fiber with polyester resin metrics for mechanical strength. This research varied different mixtures starting from areca nut fiber: pineapple leaf fiber: polyester resin, namely 20%: 30%: 50%, 25%: 25%: 50%, 30%: 20%: 50% using The hand lay up method was carried out three times in making composite board specimens. The highest bending strength results in sample one with a mixture of 20% areca nut fiber, 30% pineapple leaf fiber and 50% polyester resin were 52.60 Mpa, the impact value was 0.379 Joules/mm2. This is because there is the influence of the fiber and metric mixture which causes the elasticity modulus value to increase and because there is the influence of fiber density, where the smaller the density value the greater the mechanical strength, both bending strength and impact value. This phenomenon can be seen from macro observations, namely that composite boards experience fiber pull out with a fibrous brittle fracture type.

Physical, Mechanical and Thermal Characterization of Areca, Pineapple and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites for Aerospace Applications

In the current scenario, the focus on applying natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites in aerospace applications has increased tremendously due to their attractive characteristics such as lightweight, higher strength-to-weight ratio, good thermal stability at environmental temperatures, resistance to corrosion, sound absorbing capability and increased fuel efficiency. Further, studies on Bi-directionally oriented fiber composites have more advantages than the random or unidirectional orientation, such as uniform stress distribution and improved bonding at the interface. So, the present work focuses on using the Areca, Pineapple Leaf Fiber (PALF) and Glass fiber as the bi-directional fiber mat for reinforcing it into Epoxy polymer. The three different materials were fabricated by changing the fiber type with constant volume fraction and orientation. The martial characterization was done on the fabricated composites in order to evaluate their orientation effectiveness through density, moisture absorption, tensile, impact, hardness and thermal degradation. The bonding relationship was analyzed through a Scanning Electron Microscope. The results showed that the properties obtained were higher for the PALF composite than the areca composites due to the fact that the higher surface area of PALF fibers is confirmed through SEM analysis.

Influences of hybrid fiber on functional and drilling characteristics study of polymer hybrid Nanocomposite

The severe environmental pollution related to the manufacturing, recycling and disposal of metal-based and synthetic fiber-based composites has a major impact on human and animal life. A wide range of studies are conducted on alternative materials in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Various industries are focusing on using natural fibers from banana, jute, coir, hemp, pineapple, areca, kenaf, Sterculia foetida and Delonix regia that are the key sources of different components for developing nanocomposites. Drilling is a vital factor in the assembly process of composites. The amorphous structure of the natural fibers causes the formation of cracks at the entry and exit sides of the drilled hole. So, in the present work a nanocomposite was synthesized and optimized the machining parameters, which affect the surface finish of the hole at the entry, exit and inner surface of the drilled hole. The effect of the hybridization of glass fiber with the pineapple leaf fiber and areca fiber was studied in terms of tensile properties, delamination around the hole and surface roughness. The microstructure of the holes was studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy.

One-step self-assembled biomass carbon aerogel/carbon nanotube/cellulose nanofiber composite for supercapacitor flexible electrode

Flexible and exceptionally lightweight energy storage devices are crucial for wearable electronic gadgets. Biomass materials are emerging as ideal flexible electrode components due to their biocompatibility and non-toxic nature. In this study, pineapple leaf fibers were utilized to create activated biomass carbon aerogel (Bio-CAA). Then, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were integrated as conductive additives, combined with sturdy pineapple leaf cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) to establish a robust 3D framework. Utilizing a one-step self-assembly method, carbon aerogel/carbon nanotube/carbon nanofiber (Bio-CAA/CNT/CNF) flexible composite electrode materials were successfully synthesized. The porous structure of Bio-CAA effectively minimized the aggregation of CNTs, thereby significantly enhancing the electrochemical performance of the electrode material. The characterization indicated that the carbon aerogel composite exhibited a high specific surface area (684.275 m2 g−1) after tablet compression. The material was light yet robust, capable of being bent arbitrarily and recovering its original shape and withstanding 400 Kpa of pressure at an 88 % strain rate, demonstrating excellent mechanical properties. In a three-electrode system, the Bio-CAA/CNT/CNF = 19:1:1 based electrode exhibited a capacitance of 481 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1. The CAA/CNT/CNF = 19:1:1 based solid symmetric supercapacitor (SSC) displayed excellent cycling stability, preserving 91.7 % capacitance after 10,000 cycles at a current density of 5 A g−1. It achieved an energy density of 39.63 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 500 W kg−1. This biomass-derived carbon aerogel-based composite material demonstrates exceptional energy storage capabilities, and its lightweight attributes make it highly suitable for use in flexible displays, wearable devices, and related fields.

Production of natural cellulose-based microfibres, from oil palm mesocarp fibres and pineapple leaf wastes, as porous supports for further applications

Natural cellulose-based microfibers were obtained through an economical and environmentally sustainable process called alkaline-peroxide purification, from the waste products of oil palm mesocarp fibres (OPMF) and pineapple leaves (PL), with the intention of creating porous, biodegradable, biocompatible, and non-toxic solid supports for use in future processes. The extracted microfibres were then taken through microscopic, spectroscopic and thermal characterisation to establish their cellulosic nature. The scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images of the bleached microfibres (B-OPMF and B-PLF) were cleaner, smoother and porous as compared with that of the unrefined fibres (Ur-OPMF and Ur-PLF). The bleached fibres (B-OPMF and B-PLF) exhibited peaks of C and O, which are indicative of pure cellulose, in the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. The FTIR spectral analysis of the extracted cellulose-based fibres (B-OPMF and B-PLF) exhibited peaks that were similar in composition to the reference cellulose (P-GB). For the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) analysis, the maximum weight degradation in the reference cellulose (P-GB), occurred at 363.11 °C, in the bleached palm fibres (B-OPMF) at 334.55 °C and in the bleached pineapple leaf fibres (B-PLF) at 375.68 °C which, corresponds to cellulose decomposition. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) test verified the microfibers' thermally induced transitions. Therefore, these cellulose-based microfibres could be applied as functionalised microfibre supports for future applications.

Recent Developments of Pineapple Leaf Fiber (PALF) Utilization in the Polymer Composites—A Review

Plant fibers’ wide availability and accessibility are the main causes of the growing interest in sustainable technologies. The two primary factors to consider while concentrating on composite materials are their low weight and highly specific features, as well as their environmental friendliness. Pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) stands out among natural fibers due to its rich cellulose content, cost-effectiveness, eco-friendliness, and good fiber strength. This review provides an intensive assessment of the surface treatment, extraction, characterization, modifications and progress, mechanical properties, and potential applications of PALF-based polymer composites. Classification of natural fibers, synthetic fibers, chemical composition, micro cellulose, nanocellulose, and cellulose-based polymer composite applications have been extensively reviewed and reported. Besides, the reviewed PALF can be extracted into natural fiber cellulose and lignin can be used as reinforcement for the development of polymer biocomposites with desirable properties. Furthermore, this review article is keen to study the biodegradation of natural fibers, lignocellulosic biopolymers, and biocomposites in soil and ocean environments. Through an evaluation of the existing literature, this review provides a detailed summary of PALF-based polymer composite material as suitable for various industrial applications, including energy generation, storage, conversion, and mulching films.

The Effect of Spinning Parameters and Fiber Blending Ratio on the Physical Properties of Pineapple Leaf Fiber (PALF)-Cotton Yarns

Pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) is known as pineapple residue and has potential as a textile material. Typical yarn manufacturing adopts ring spinning technique, yet it is challenging for course fibers, including PALF. PALF has been used in clothing and paper production using textile thread. It has the highest modulus among leaf fibers, comparable to synthetic fibers such as aramid and glass, and possesses the greatest tensile strength among leaf fibers. PALF has high fineness index makes it ideal for industrial yarn and woven fabric applications. Using natural fibers offers benefits such as being environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and lightweight yet sturdy. This study evaluates the physical properties of PALF-cotton yarn at three twist speeds, two total drafts, and three PALF-cotton blending ratios. The methodology of this study involves carding, drawing, and ring spinning of the PALF-cotton fibers. The process starts with cutting and opening PALF before blending it with cotton fiber using a carding machine. The finding shows that the average diameter and fineness values range from 205 μm to 458 μm and 31.2 to 67.0 tex, respectively. The study also reported that twist speed, total draft, and blending ratio affect the diameter and fineness of the yarns. In contrast, the increment of twist speed and total draft decreases the fineness and diameter of PALF-cotton yarns. Pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) shows great potential in the apparel industry. Three regression models were presented to predict the future ring-spinning process, and pineapple waste can be repurposed into valuable products, reducing overall waste.

Kontes Kapal Cepat Tak Berawak Nasional (KKCTBN) held by Pusat Prestasi Nasional (Puspresnas) Kemendikbudristek RI aims to encourage innovation in the design and performance of shipping-maritime technology prototypes. The selection of the right material for the catamaran hull is very important because it affects the strength and weight of the ship. Materials such as fiber reinforced polymer, which uses glass fiber, are often used due to their good mechanical strength. However, natural fibers such as pineapple leaf fiber also have potential as composite reinforcement. The combination of natural and synthetic fibers, such as pineapple leaf fiber and glass fiber, in hybrid composites can improve the mechanical properties of the material. The purpose of this study was to investigate tensile and impact properties of pineapple leaf fiber-glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) hybrid composites. Fiber preparation was carried out by separating pineapple leaf to produce fibers, alkaline treatment using 10% NaOH with a soaking time of 24 hours, and oven drying at 100?C for 60 minutes. Polymer as the matrix used was 50% while the percentage variations of pineapple leaf fiber and glass fiber were sequentially as follows 5%:45%, 10%:40% and 15%:35%. It was found that the tensile strength of the 10% pineapple leaf fiber composite was about 114 MPa and impact strength 49.96 J/mm², density 1.19 g/cm3. The results of this study indicate that the resulting composite can be used as an alternative material in the prototype hull of a catamaran type unmanned speedboat.

In an attempt to contribute to the mitigation of environmental impacts caused by the construction sector, several studies on biodegradable components have been carried out. One example is the addition of lignocellulosic reinforcing fibers in cementitious matrices to replace synthetic fibers (glass and polypropylene). These vegetable fibers increase the tensile strength of the composites in question only after being subjected to surface treatments that guarantee a reduction in their hydrophilicity and durability in alkaline matrices. In this sense, the objective of this work is to evaluate the potential of surface treatments based on NaOH and tannic acid (C76H52O46) on pineapple leaf fiber (Ananas comosus) with concentrations of 2 %, 4 %, 6 %, 8 % and 10 % by mass. The material with treatment was used as an addition in proportions of 0 % (reference) and 3 % in relation to the mass of Portland cement in the production of mortars in a proportion of 1:1:6 (cement: lime: sand). In addition to microstructural characterizations of the fibers, the experimental program included fresh, hardened and durability tests. From the results, it was found that both treatments are capable of reducing the content of amorphous components of the fibers related to the hydrophilicity of this material and interference with the hydration of the cement. Fiber-reinforced mortars treated with 2 % and 4 % C76H52O46 demonstrate superior mechanical performance compared to other groups, as well as improving the workability of the matrix in the fresh state.

Development and Characterization of Pineapple Leaf Fibre Reinforced with Graphene and Fibre Glass Composites for Aerospace Application

Natural fibre-based compositessuch as Pineapple leaf fibre (PALF)are valued for their environmental friendliness and unique properties, can be combined with graphene and glass fibres to create advanced aerospace composites. This study investigates the effects of graphene content and PALF composition on the mechanical properties of the composite. PALF is made using environmentally friendly methods, with graphene treated for better integration and fibre glass added through layering. This study compares the strength and flexibility of two samples with different PALF-to-fibreglass ratios: 50:50 and 70:30, and one sample with a 70:30 PALF-to-fibreglass ratio reinforced with 1% graphene, using tensile and flexural tests. The 70:30 composition ratio results in a lower maximum tensile strength and Young’s modulus, but a higher bending stress than the 50:50 ratio due to the higher volume of PALF in the sample. 70:30 PALF/fibreglass reinforced with 1% graphene is stiffer, resulting in a higher Young’s modulus compared to the sample without graphene. There is a slight decrease in flexural strength for the 70:30 PALF/fibreglass ratio reinforced with 1% graphene, while still maintaining superior bending stress strength compared to 50:50 ratio compositions. From the SEM test, PALF/fibreglass samples exhibited fibre pull-out, while 70:30 samples reinforced with graphene showed fibre breakage. Graphene enhanced the bonding between fibres and resins, leading to the breakage.Without graphene, weaker bonding led to fibre pull-out. Therefore, the PALF/fibreglass reinforced with graphene has the potential for aerospace applications, particularly in components subjected to high bending stress, such as aircraft wings or the horizontal tail.

Mechanical Characterization, Water Absorption, and Thickness Swelling of Lightweight Pineapple Leaf/Ramie Fabric-Reinforced Polypropylene Hybrid Composites.

Fiber-reinforced composites are among the recognized competing materials in various engineering applications. Ramie and pineapple leaf fibers are fascinating natural fibers due to their remarkable material properties. This research study aims to unveil the viability of hybridizing two kinds of lignocellulosic plant fiber fabrics in polymer composites. In this work, the hybrid composites were prepared with the aid of the hot compression technique. The mechanical, water-absorbing, and thickness swelling properties of ramie and pineapple leaf fiber fabric-reinforced polypropylene hybrid composites were identified. A comparison was made between non-hybrid and hybrid composites to demonstrate the hybridization effect. According to the findings, hybrid composites, particularly those containing ramie fiber as a skin layer, showed a prominent increase in mechanical strength. In comparison with non-hybrid pineapple leaf fabric-reinforced composites, the tensile, flexural, and Charpy impact strengths were enhanced by 52.10%, 18.78%, and 166.60%, respectively, when the outermost pineapple leaf fiber layers were superseded with ramie fabric. However, increasing the pineapple leaf fiber content reduced the water absorption and thickness swelling of the hybrid composites. Undeniably, these findings highlight the potential of hybrid composites to reach a balance in mechanical properties and water absorption while possessing eco-friendly characteristics.
